Of all the places in Tanzania we could choose to fly, we singled out Ruaha because it is a land of wilderness and contrast.

The peace is palpable here and yet it is bursting with life. In Ruaha you hear the hornbill tapping at his reflection on the car window and the hippo’s morning chorus snorting in the river as we float low overhead. Our unique perspective above the landscape allows us to search for the elusive and shy just over that next bush or suddenly come upon a herd of 100 buffalo. Gentle winds steer the balloon between the baobabs and acacias, dipping down to just above the wide Ruaha River and then they are bearing us up to five hundred feet where the dawn chorus rises into the painted sky. Ruaha is a meeting point for the wildlife of southern and eastern Africa and it is here that you might just see something really special.

Where we Fly

From your camp to the balloon

From your camp to the balloon

0400 – 0515hrs.

Rise before the birds to drive through the pre-dawn, eyes fixed on the glow of the headlights in case they should pick-up a night-time beasty out on the prowl. You arrive at the launch site as the crew prepare the balloon and light the burners.

Keeping safe & preparing to fly

Keeping safe & preparing to fly

0615 - 0645hrs.

Our experienced Captain takes you through the important safety procedures and explains the launch and landing positions while the gold and green of the balloon billows against the lightening sky. It’s time to embark.

Journey through the soft winds

Journey through the soft winds

0645 – 0815hrs.

As the balloon glides gently upward, your pilot gives the signal to rise from the launch position in the basket. Your first glimpse of Ruaha from the sky – a landscape of meandering river courses, towering baobabs, granite outcrops and acacia woodland for as far as the eye can see. Among them move big cats on early morning hunts, herds of hundreds of elephant seeking water at the river bank, hippos wallowing peacefully and birds giving accompaniment to the rising sun. Our experienced pilots will interpret the sights and sounds as you drift low across the treetops, scanning the riverbanks, or climb into the deepening blue of the sky to gaze down at this great wilderness. An hour or so aloft, and you’ll return gently to the earth, exhilarated and ready for the next part of your adventure.

Celebrating a tradition

Celebrating a tradition

0815 – 0830hrs.

“We have flown so high and so well that God has joined you in laughter and set you gently back into the loving arms of mother Earth.” As is the tradition of balloonists, we toast the flight with sparkling wine before boarding a safari car for a short game drive to breakfast.

Breakfast as nature intended

Breakfast as nature intended

0830 – 0930hrs.

Our crew have laid an immaculate table under the spreading boughs of a baobab tree in the wilds of Ruaha and are waiting to serve fresh coffee and juice, tropical fruit and freshly baked bread. They will cook a full English breakfast while you relax and relive your flight with your fellow passengers. The time will come to move on, but right now you can just “be”, soaking in the warm sunshine and the feeling of having let your soul soar free for a moment.

More about Ruaha

About ruaha.

Ruaha is the largest National Park in Tanzania but still relatively unknown, with only a handful camps and lodges in its area of 20,226kmsq. The park came into being in 1964 but conservation efforts go back to 1910 when the Saba Game Reserve was established by the colonial authorities. Activities on safari in Ruaha include game driving and walking, however a balloon safari is arguably the only way to really appreciate the sheer scale of this vast wilderness, and get a completely unique perspective of Ruaha.Land of Contrasts

Land of Contrasts

The wide swathe of the Ruaha River rises to open woodland interspersed with softly grassed glades and weathered granite kopjes. The forests of giant baobab trees are amongst the most striking of its diverse landscapes. The lifeline of the park is the Ruaha River and this is where the wildlife is often to be found, but in a balloon we can float at head-height above the water or change direction and soar for a better vantage point over the trees and bushes. In an area as varied as this, we have the freedom to make the most of our unique vantage point. There is no typical day on safari with so many things to see in Ruaha!

Where North meets South

The wildlife of Ruaha is notable for many reasons. This is where north meets south and it’s possible to see not only typically East African mammals such as Grant’s gazelle and lesser kudu but also roan, sable and greater kudu found mainly in Southern Africa. The park is renowned for its large herds of elephant and buffalo – sometimes numbering several hundred, and particularly sizeable lion prides which have been known to specialize in hunting giraffe. Ruaha is generally an excellent park to see big game, especially cats but it’s also possible to see wild dog. That said, it is often the smaller, unexpected animals of the bush that are the highlight of a visit here as part of a wider Tanzanian safari.

How does a hot air balloon work?

A hot air balloon works on the principle of buoyancy. It consists of a large balloon, known as an envelope, filled with hot air. The envelope is typically made of lightweight and heat-resistant materials such as nylon or polyester. The balloon is attached to a basket or gondola, in which passengers and the pilot stand.

The process starts by heating the air inside the envelope using burners fueled by liquid petroleum gas. The burners generate a flame that heats the air, causing it to expand and become less dense than the surrounding air. As a result, the balloon becomes buoyant and begins to rise.

The balloon moves with the wind, as there is no way to steer it directly. However, our pilots can control the ascent and descent of the balloon by adjusting the heat inside the envelope. By adding more heat, the air inside the envelope becomes hotter and provides more lift, causing the balloon to rise. Conversely, by reducing the heat, the air inside the envelope cools down, becoming denser and causing the balloon to descend.

To land the balloon, the pilot gradually decreases the heat and allows the air inside the envelope to cool, slowing down the ascent. The pilot looks for a suitable landing spot and, with the help of ground crew, guides the balloon to the ground by releasing some of the hot air from the envelope.

The basic principles behind a hot air balloon are simple yet effective. By controlling the temperature of the air inside the envelope, the pilot can control the altitude of the balloon and navigate the skies. It's a unique and serene way to experience flight and enjoy breathtaking views from above.

When is the best time of year for ballooning in Serengeti?

We are fortunate that the weather in the Serengeti is suitable for ballooning almost every day of the year.

We fly in the following areas every morning: Central Serengeti : Year Round. Ndutu Area, Ngorongoro Conservation Area/Serengeti: 20 Dec – 31 March. Western Serengeti: 15 May – October. Northern Serengeti: 15 June - 15 January. Safari wildlife viewing varies depending on the time of year and location, and the wildebeest migration moves through the ecosystem year-round so although there are no guarantees, if you're in the right place at the right time, you have a good chance of seeing plenty of wildlife.

In Serengeti, it mostly rains in the afternoons, evenings or night time, early morning is the driest part of the day and that's when we fly!

Do you operate year round?

Yes, we operate daily throughout the year in central Serengeti. We operate seasonally in the following areas in Serengeti: Central Serengeti : Year Round Ndutu Area, Ngorongoro Conservation/Serengeti: 20 Dec – 31 March Western Serengeti: June – October Northern Serengeti: 01 July - 15 November A typical day on safari can now include an early morning balloon flight and a different perspective the Serengeti!

Do I need to book in advance?

We strongly recommend that you book in advance, either directly with us or with your tour operator. We have limited capacity and this exclusive adventure is often fully booked. For peace of mind, it is always best to book in advance to avoid disappointment.

Ruaha National Park Hot Air Balloon Safari Tanzania

Adding item to wishlist requires an account, already a member, don't have an account create one..

Enjoy a Hot air balloon safari in Ruaha National Park, Tanzania . Ruaha is located in south-central Tanzania, west of Nyerere National Park and Mikumi. The closest big town to Ruaha National Park is Iringa , about 130km from the park. Dar es Salaam is 625 km (388 mi) east of Ruaha Park by road. Ruaha National Park is a vast, unspoiled wilderness area where diverse wildlife, birds, and habitats await, without the crowds. In Ruaha, elephants, buffalos, and lions (three of Africa’s Big Five) are commonly sighted. Leopards, another member of the Big Five, are also sighted quite often. Other commonly sighted animals in Ruaha include wildebeest, giraffes, hippos, and various antelopes.

Witnessing Ruaha savannah and wildlife from a hot-air balloon is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Not ideal for game-viewing or photography, a balloon safari will give you a sense of scale not afforded by regular terrestrial excursions.  Beginning in the cool hours of dawn, hot-air balloons are launched to float effortlessly across the vast plains. While inflating the balloons is a noisy affair the experience of gliding above hordes of wildebeest and troops of elephants can be serene.  Flights last around an hour and usually come with a pre-flight coffee and a post-flight bush breakfast.

Ruaha National Park Hot Air Balloon Safari Tanzania:  One of the most tranquil wildlife viewing experiences has to be going on a hot air balloon safari where you float over the flat landscape which teems with wildlife, notably giraffes and hippos, impalas, and warthogs.

Hot air balloon rides are accessible as an activity if you are on a safari in the Ruaha National Park . Ruaha Hot Air Balloon flies above the majestic scenery and wildlife of Ruaha, mostly flying over the Ruaha River and its adjacent plains.

0500 Hours: You will be picked up at around 0500 Hours and driven to the launch site near Msembe Airstrip, ready for take-off just before sunrise (around 0600 hours). Our early morning balloon ride is launched east of Msembe, between junction R23 and the river Ruaha which provides the only permanent water source in the area.

Therefore, the wildlife congregates in the valley with many resident species. The open plains, acacia woodlands, the meandering river, and its many hippo pools all produce a scenic vista seen from above.

Guests meet 20 minutes prior to sunrise at the launch site and enjoy a hot cup of tea or coffee as the hot air balloon is prepared for it its early morning flight. A safety briefing on the do’s and dont’s of hot air balloon flying is given to all passengers and then it’s up into the sky.

In the pre-dawn, your balloon safari adventure begins as you leave your lodge or camp. It is still dark and there’s the chance you might glimpse a leopard or another nocturnal hunter on your way to the launch site.

The anticipation and excitement build as you meet your pilot and watch the balloon being inflated as the sky lightens. After a thorough safety briefing and demonstration of boarding and landing position, you board your balloon.

Rising as the sun rises, your balloon floats in whatever direction the winds of the day are heading, over this land of baobabs and granite kopjes. Using varying altitudes and layers of air to navigate, your pilot will skillfully guide the balloon.

Each day is different, some of the flights may be low and at other times your balloon may climb to 1,000 feet or more. Nobody can predict, no two flights are ever the same and your balloon safari will be unique. Eventually, after around one hour, depending on conditions, we must land.

Ruaha Balloon lands somewhere near the Ruaha/ Mwagusi River confluence, after a variety of low and high flying. We celebrate in the traditional manner with an excellent sparkling wine before sitting down to a full English breakfast prepared and served in the bush in “Out of Africa” style, complete with bone china, linen table cloth, and Sheffield cutlery.

Replete with breakfast and enduring memories, Ruaha Balloon Safaris Certificate in hand, you’ll rejoin your safari guide to continue the day’s activities.

Ruaha National Park Hot Air Balloon Safari Tanzania Itinerary

0500 Hours:  Wake up before dawn with a quick cup of tea or coffee and a snack before setting off on your balloon adventure. Wrap up warm and enjoy the drive to the launch site in the dark, as you may be lucky enough to encounter some nocturnal animals.

0630 Hours: On arrival at the launch site, meet your pilot and watch as your balloon is inflated ready for lift-off. Launch as dawn is breaking, rise up in the sky as the sun rises. Witness the magnificent spectacle as darkness lifts, the sky is painted orange and the ground’s silhouette begins to take form.

Float along the vast plains, following the whims of the wind, watching the mighty herds below. The launch site is in a fixed location, however, the landing site is always an added adventure, for everyone, as it is determined solely on the wind direction and speed.

Your pilot uses various altitudes and air layers to navigate the balloon across the rolling plains. Each flight is novel. Go from skimming the tall grass to just missing the flat tabletops of the acacias trees, to soaring high above the plains at 1000 feet in the land of eagles and vultures.

Fly over areas inaccessible to vehicles. Appreciate the awesome vistas as you float silently above the undisturbed game. No two flights are ever the same, making for a really magical experience. The flight usually lasts for about an hour, depending on the conditions.

0730 Hours – 0745 Hours: Celebrate your landing in the traditional way, with some chilled champagne before heading off to a celebratory bush breakfast. Indulge in fresh fruit and a freshly cooked breakfast complete with crisp tablecloth, bone china, and shiny silverware, in the company of your fellow passengers.

0915 Hours:  A fitting finale to the morning. After a leisurely breakfast, you’ll be escorted to the rendezvous point to meet your guide to continue on a game drive back to camp.

Ruaha National Park Hot Air Balloon Safari Tanzania Frequently Asked Questions

1. do i need to book in advance.

We strongly recommend that you book in advance with African Spice Safaris to secure your spot. We have limited capacity and this exclusive adventure is frequently fully booked.

2. How much does it cost?

Request for rates at the time of booking to enjoy a discount. Prices are inclusive of all fees & taxes. The balloon safari price may vary due to exchange rates, local taxes etc.

3. When is the best time of year for ballooning in Serengeti?

We are fortunate that the weather in Ruaha National Park is suitable for ballooning almost every day of the year.

4. What about the ‘rainy seasons’?

The ‘long rains’ (late March to early June) & the ‘short rains’ (November to mid-December). The great migration passes through Central Serengeti during the green seasons.

At these times it USUALLY rains late afternoon and during the night. Mornings are USUALLY bright and clear with gentle winds (ideal ballooning weather!). The landscape is lush, green, and dust-free (yes, your vehicle may get stuck in the mud – but our balloon won’t!)

5. Do you operate year-round?

Yes, we operate daily throughout the year in central Serengeti. We operate from Ruaha east of Msembe, between junction R23 and the river Ruaha

6. Are there any restrictions?

Yes, we do not carry children under the age of 7 years. There is no upper age limit, however, passengers must be reasonably mobile, fit to fly, and prepared for an adventure.

Ballooning is not suitable for pregnant ladies, people with mobility, or health conditions (heart conditions, brittle bones, neck or back conditions). Passengers must be able to bend their knees, hold on to rope handles with both hands for take-off and landing, and be able to climb into and out of the basket.

Balloon passenger weights are calculated at an average of 80 kg. Passengers weighing 50% + more than this (i.e. 120 kg / 265 lbs / 19 stone) may be charged for two places.

7. I am on an organized safari with a set itinerary. Can I do this?

Yes, as long as you are staying at any of the Hotels, lodges, or camps in Ruaha National Park or near Ruaha National Park.  We collect you before the flight from your lodge/ camp in early morning and return you to the rendezvous point at 0945 hours to join the rest of your party & continue your day’s activities

8. What should I wear? What should I bring?

It can be cool in the early morning, but often warm later, therefore a jacket or sweater that can be removed later is a good idea. A hat is recommended (bald guests) as radiant heat from the burners can be uncomfortable.

We suggest long trousers, long sleeves, preferably in natural fibers and stout shoes. Don’t forget your camera and binoculars. You can bring a camera bag or a small backpack with you in the balloon.

9. Why is ballooning expensive?

Balloons baskets cost the same as a big Mercedes but only last a few hundred hours. They use a significant amount of fuel per flight and involve a minimum crew of 6 men plus a professional pilot to get it in the air plus a further 10 employees behind the scenes for each balloon.

In addition, there are the retrieving vehicles, logistics, backup, etc.  We operate in a remote area.  There is a very substantial sum in the form of concession fees for every passenger to Tanzania National Parks towards conservation funds.

Ruaha National Park

Ruaha is Tanzania’s largest national park.

It offers guided walking safaris...

...where you might spot some of the park’s fantastic birdlife...

...as well as a good amount of wildlife.

Ruaha is known for its dramatic scenery, including rolling hills...

...and open plains with skeletal baobab trees.

Ruaha’s wild and untrammelled feel sets it apart from other reserves.

Ruaha National Park

Hot, dry and wild, the untrammelled expanse of Ruaha National Park is Tanzania's best kept wildlife secret.

In 2008 the Usangu Game reserve merged its borders with Ruaha transforming it into Tanzania’s largest national park; it now covers more than 20,000km². Despite the size of the park there are still only a handful of camps found here, which has built Ruaha’s reputation as Tanzania’s best kept game viewing secret. Ruaha’s wild and untrammelled feel is what sets it apart from other reserves, making it a popular choice for regular east African safarigoers. Click here for a sketch map of Ruaha National Park , or a much more detailed interactive Google map of Ruaha , where you can see camp locations plotted precisely on satellite maps of the area. Ruaha is well known for its varied dramatic scenery, which includes rolling hills; large open plains; groves of skeletal baobabs and along its southern border, the Great Ruaha River, from which the park gets its name. This is by far the most dominant geographical feature of the national park and, for the wildlife it is the most important. Ruaha has a hot, dry climate which means the animals don’t tend to stray too far from dependable water sources. This makes predicting game movements far easier, particularly in the dry season. The best game viewing in this national park is generally from May to November, but the bush is greener and prettier from January to June, and birding peaks during the European winter months of December to April.

When to go to Ruaha National Park

Our month by month guide: What it's like to visit Ruaha in Tanzania

Tanzania in January

January usually marks the start of the short dry season, although the exact timings of this are a little unpredictable. You can expect clear blue skies and sunshine, if the short rains have stopped, and the temperatures will be building. The short dry season is a little less pronounced in Southern Tanzania, and so it can still be wet in these areas. It is an interesting time for avians as resident birds go into breeding plumage and migrant species can be present. Once the New Year busy period has quietened down, January can offer great value and quieter parks, although the weather can be variable, and in the Selous and Ruaha the wildlife is more dispersed.

  • Variable weather: clear & dry or cloudy with some rain.
  • Occasional thunderstorms may occur.
  • A good time of year for birding as and many migrant species are around
  • The wildebeest migration is gathering in the southern Serengeti.
  • Busy in early January, quietening down through the month.

A good time to visit, with pros & cons

Weather in January

Tanzania in February

February is during the short dry season and is one of the hottest months in Tanzania, with temperatures reaching around 33°Celsius. This can be a good time to visit, as some areas of the Northern Circuit are comparatively quieter than during the European summer months, and lodge rates are also a little lower. The wildebeest will typically be on the southern plains of the Serengeti for their calving season, which tends to occur in a 2-3 week window in early-mid February – although this does vary year on year. This is also a particularly rewarding time for birdlife, as northern hemisphere migrants join the resident species.

  • Hot and dry weather.
  • Wildebeest migration calving on Serengeti’s southern plains.
  • Ngorongoro Crater and southern Serengeti busy for the migration.
  • Selous and Ruaha are typically quiet at this time.
  • The parks are likely to be lush and green, leading to pretty landscape

A very good time to visit

Weather in February

Tanzania in March

The heavier ‘long rains’ start in earnest in March although exactly when varies year on year. With no need to stay close to permanent water sources, migratory wildlife disperses, and so game viewing starts to become more challenging. This is most prominently seen in Tarangire National Park. The wildebeest migration may still be calving, or have moved on into the central regions of the Serengeti. Many of the camps in the southern parks close mid March and mobile tented camps in the Serengeti will wind down towards the end of the month in order to move location or carry out refurbishments, ready for the new tourist season.

  • Hot with building humidity, before the rains begin at some point.
  • Wildlife viewing is variable depending on the start of the rains.
  • Parks are quiet and rates are low.
  • Not great for southern or western Tanzania.
  • March can be a good time for birding, with many migrant species.

Weather in March

Tanzania in April

April is in the middle of the long rainy season and is the wettest month, with on average 250mm of rain. Temperatures are fairly high and humid in comparison to the rest of the year. Expect the bush to be lush and flowering, and alive with insects, birds and smaller animals. It is however also dense, allowing wildlife to hide, which in turn makes game viewing harder. This is a very quiet time in terms of visitor numbers. Many of the tented camps are closed in April, however the larger lodges remain open. The rates are significantly cheaper, and so if you are willing to work harder to spot the bigger game, some accommodation bargains can be had.

  • Heavy rain expected, with impressive thunderstorms and lightning.
  • Many camps closed and roads impassable due to ground conditions.
  • Rates are at their lowest all year round, with very few other tourists
  • Places that are open are green and vibrant, wildlife more dispersed.

This is not a great time to visit

Weather in April

Tanzania in May

As Tanzania is close to the equator there is no dramatic difference in climate throughout the year, but temperatures do start to drop a little in May. The rains are likely to still be present, although potentially clearing towards the end of the month. Visitor numbers and lodge rates are still low. The wildebeest migration is making its way through the western regions of the Serengeti, crossing the Grumeti River. Virtually all camps in southern Tanzania remain closed, and many of the roads and tracks in the Selous become impassable.

  • Heavy rains and storms are likely, this can create some dramatic skies
  • Blissfully quiet in northern Tanzania, and a good time to avoid crowds
  • The parks are likely to look lush and green, with long grass.
  • Wildlife is likely to be more dispersed, with fewer sightings.
  • The low prices make safaris much more affordable at this time.

Weather in May

Tanzania in June

The rains come to an end at some point during the month and migratory wildlife begins to be drawn back to perennial water sources as the land starts to dry up. It’s likely that the parks will still be quite green and the grass high though, so walking and fly-camping may be unlikely. This marks the start of the season with camps reopening, but prices are still more affordable than the subsequent months. The migration may still be in the Western Corridor, or on the move northwards towards the Mara River. Western Tanzania presents more challenging conditions for chimpanzee trekking in Mahale National Park, as the chimps are higher in the mountains.

  • A transitory time for the migration – moving from west to north.
  • The parks may still be quite green, and grasses high.
  • Wildlife may be dispersed still.
  • Relatively low visitor numbers and good value, shoulder season prices.

Weather in June

Tanzania in July

July is considered to be the start of the peak season, with no rainfall expected and pleasant daytime temperatures. As the parks dry, the wildlife congregates in fewer areas, grass is eaten and trampled by the migration, and game viewing gets better and better. The wildebeest are typically arriving in the northern Serengeti, ready to begin their period of crossings of the Mara River. In the Selous and Ruaha wildlife sightings can be fantastic, with animals gathering around the lakes and rivers. Great conditions and school holidays mean the parks are at their busiest, with Ngorongoro and the Serengeti particularly crowded.

  • Dry and warm daytimes, chilly and windy in the mornings and evenings.
  • Great wildlife viewing, as water sources diminish.
  • The most popular time of year with very high visitor numbers.
  • Prices are at their highest due to the great conditions on the ground.
  • To avoid the crowds consider Tanzania’s southern parks.

Fantastic: the very best time to visit

Weather in July

Tanzania in August

August is the middle of the long dry season, with clear skies and sunny weather. You can expect some cooler weather at night and first thing in the morning. Remember to pack layered clothing, so you can wrap up warm on your early morning game drives, but remain comfortable as it heats up throughout the day. August is a very popular time to visit, so accommodation prices are at their highest and advanced booking is necessary. It can get noticeably busier in some of the northern parks – in particular the Ngorongoro Crater and northern Serengeti, as visitors flock to the area in hope of witnessing an exciting migration river crossing.

  • Dry and warm daytimes, chilly in the early mornings and evenings.
  • General wildlife viewing should be excellent.
  • An exciting time of year for the wildebeest migration.
  • Certain areas will be very busy and camps fill up fast.
  • Great wildlife sightings in the Selous and Ruaha, and fewer people.

Weather in August

Tanzania in September

September can be an excellent time of year to visit Tanzania. As the parks continue to dry up the wildlife becomes increasingly reliant on the remaining water sources, leading to high densities of animals. Whilst early September can be busy, with fewer families traveling at this time the parks typically become quieter as the month goes on. You are still likely to see the wildebeest migration in the northern Serengeti, with river crossings occurring on a regular basis. Tanzania’s southern parks are also fantastic at this time of year, generally receiving far fewer visitors than the north, and wildlife sightings can be great. Prices remain high and the weather generally remains good.

  • Wildlife viewing in September can be fantastic.
  • Whilst still fairly busy, often the parks are typically a little quiet
  • The parks will start to become very dry, with little new vegetation
  • Cooler mornings and evenings, warming up during the day.
  • Prices remain high.

Weather in September

Tanzania in October

At the tail end of the dry season, the wildlife should be the easiest to spot, although photographers should be aware that it can be a bit dusty at this time of year, as there has been no rain for several months. Great general wildlife viewing throughout as animals are attracted to remaining sources of water. Elephant numbers are particularly high at this time in Tarangire, and Mahale and Katavi are especially rewarding with frequent wildlife sightings close to camp. There is a chance of rainfall towards the end of the month, if the short rains commence. While prices remain high, visitors numbers are significantly lower than in July-August.

  • Mostly dry and temperatures comfortably warm, with the chance of storm
  • Great game viewing although the landscape can be a bit barren.
  • Much lower visitor numbers than the earlier months.

Weather in October

Tanzania in November

In November you can expect the start of the short rains, although the start date varies every year. The rains are highly localised, and are much lighter and more unpredictable than the long rains that occur earlier in the year. These should not really interfere with your safari – as the game viewing at this time is still good - but you should pack a waterproof jacket and be prepared for some short rain showers! The majority of tented camps remain open, but some of the mobile camps in Northern Tanzania will close for the latter half on the month. Given the seasonality, camps are charging shoulder season rates so there are often some bargains to be had. Early November can offer great value for money and the weather conditions are likely to be comparable to late October.

  • Parks are comparatively quiet and prices at the lower end.
  • Some camps will close towards the end of the month for maintenance.
  • Good wildlife sightings, but animals will disperse when rain starts
  • The wildebeest migration is on the move and the location unpredictable

Weather in November

Tanzania in December

December is also during the short rainy period, but this does not stop Tanzania being a popular destination to spend the festive period. Be aware that many of the lodges book up early, and charge peak rates over this time. Advanced booking is essential over this period, especially if travelling in larger family groups. Travelling in December outside of the festive period allows travellers to make use of excellent shoulder season rates. Temperatures are pleasant with the averages of 27Celsius, although there is the chance of intermittent thunderstorms.

  • Variable weather:clear & dry or cloudy with some rain and thunderstorm
  • Good general game viewing in parks with low seasonality - Serengeti.
  • Very quiet early in the month, becoming exceptionally busy.
  • Prices reflect this – great value rising to the highest they are.
  • The wildlife in southern Tanzania is more dispersed.

JOURNEY SILENTLY OVER THE WAKING LANDSCAPE AS THE DAWN CHORUS RISES UP TO GREET YOU

A balloon safari in the Serengeti, Ngorongoro area, Tarangire or Ruaha National Park can be described in one word – magical. In the chilly morning darkness keep your eyes firmly on the vehicle’s headlights to see antelopes leap in front of you. Arrive at the launch site, climb into the basket to be warmed by the burners and rise softly in the twilight. At altitude witness the sunrise over Tanzania. Drift silently over rivers, trees, and savannahs with the wildlife in motion below. Gently land to enjoy a champagne breakfast under the shade of a giant acacia tree.

Romantic, unique and unforgettable, balloon safaris are for life’s special moments

A balloon safari in Tanzania is going to be one of the most special moments in your life. Honeymooners or hopeless romantics will adore drifting over the heart of Africa’s wilderness – an experience that will stay with you forever. With baskets varying in size, it is possible to enjoy a private experience as a couple or family, or as part of groups of up to 16 people.

  • Serenity Seekers
  • Nature Lovers
"We also went on the balloon ride, it was our first balloon ride. Our pilot Joe “welcomed us to his office”, the ride was graceful and amazing. My husband Boyd does not like heights and it didn’t bother him at all."

Northern Serengeti balloon safari

FLY ACROSS SOME OF THE BEST-KNOWN WILDLIFE AREAS OF TANZANIA

Tanzania’s northern Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Conservation Area form part of a huge ecosystem, which allows for the incredible wildebeest migration to exist. Flights take place in the central, western, southern, and northern parts of the Serengeti allowing passengers to see the migration from above. The Ruaha National Park and Tarangire National Park have incredible wildlife numbers and huge baobabs trees. Here your pilot artfully navigates you over the rivers and tree canopies to see copious wildlife below.

Clear skies and light steady winds are needed for balloon safaris – luckily, this type of weather is prevalent in the morning Tanzania all year round. As balloon safaris take to the air it is possible to journey through the sky when vehicles will get stuck in the mud. This makes enjoying a flight over nature possible all year round. Tanzania has a tropical climate with two dry seasons and two rainy seasons. Dry landscapes with wildlife congregating around water sources can be expected in the dry seasons, whilst green landscapes, dramatic weather and light can be experienced in the rainy seasons.

Champagne breakfast under tree in Ruaha

June until October Best for witnessing the wildebeest migration from above

The main dry season from June to October is the most popular time to take a safari in Tanzania. The weather is dry and pleasant with a minimal chance of rain. Throughout Tanzania, it is the best time to see the wildlife as the vegetation is lower and the wildlife does not stray too far from water sources. In the Serengeti and neighbouring Ngorongoro region, you can see the savannahs from above, whilst in Ruaha National Park and Tarangire National Park you can see huge herds of buffalo and elephants.  The second shorter dry period from January to February is a great time for spotting animals.

Champagne glasses and bottles

Rainy Season

March until May Best for seeing green landscapes with crystal-clear skies

The main rainy season is from March to May when it usually rains heavily on a daily basis. Luckily, it tends to rain in the afternoons, evenings or during the night in dramatic thunderstorms. The mornings tend to be rain-free and early morning balloon safaris are rarely affected. The short rains, which are less predictable occur from November to December in short afternoon thunderstorms. Both rainy seasons turn the landscapes green, whilst cloud formations are beautiful and the light tends to be crisp and golden. It is a beautiful time to see wild Africa from above.

AN EXPERIENCE THAT WILL SWEEP YOU OFF YOUR FEET

Special times in life deserve special moments. This combination of safari on land and by air will be an experience that you will treasure forever. When you book a multi-day safari with us, we can easily add a balloon safari as activity to your personalised itinerary.

How to plan a balloon safari in the Serengeti or Ruaha National Park

Booking a balloon safari with us is only possible in combination with one of our safaris to the Serengeti National Park, Tarangire National Park, Ngorongoro Crater or Ruaha National Park. This simplifies the process for you, as we handle the tricky part of organising your transport, accommodation and arranging your flight.

Who can fly?

Balloon safaris in Tanzania are not recommended for people with heart conditions, mobility issues, back or neck conditions or if you are pregnant. The good news is there is no upper age limit. All passengers must be mobile with the ability to bend at the knees, grip onto ropes and climb into the basket.

Rise at 4am to arrive at the launch site around 5:15am where the crew will set up the balloon. Having been briefed on the safety procedures by the captain you take off at 6:45am. After an approximate one-hour flight you will gently return to the ground. Following a champagne toast at 8:30am, you will be taken to enjoy a bush breakfast under the shade of a giant Acacia tree.

Tanzania’s weather offers great conditions for balloon safaris all year round. However, safety is always the top priority: should a balloon ride have to be cancelled due to unfavourable weather conditions, you will be refunded your money or can postpone the ride to the next day.

Mornings start off very cold but warm up quickly, so a warm layer that you can remove later is essential. Trousers, long-sleeved shirts, and a hat to protect from the radiant heat from the burners are important. Passengers can bring a small bag onto the flight, which is perfect for storing cameras, binoculars and suncream.

Scared of heights?

Many passengers who are scared of heights confess to not having sensed the fear of vertigo because the huge wicker basket provides a sense of safety. What’s more, the basket moves in sync with the balloon. Consequently, it does not sway, and passengers rarely experience motion sickness.

Is a balloon safari in Tanzania safe?

With our partner’s thirty years of experience, you will be in safe hands. Experienced pilots carefully assess weather forecasts to decide if it is safe to fly. Luckily, the weather in Tanzania is relatively consistent making it possible to fly almost all year round.

The balloon equipment used is of the best quality and is kept in the best condition. As a result, the balloons are retired after only 850 hours of flight to ensure all the equipment is in perfect working order. The wicker baskets have individual compartments that hold 2 to 4 people, plus, a seat, safety belt and a rope around the inside edge to give you something secure to hold onto.

Before take-off, the pilot will run through all the safety instructions so that you know what to do and expect during the flight. You will then journey over the landscape to return gently to the ground one hour later.

Can children join a balloon safari?

Children from seven years old can take part in a balloon safari. However, if your child is six years old, 1.40cm tall, understands English and listens to instructions it is possible for them to use a special cushion and seatbelt so they can also join the balloon safari.

If your children are under six years of age they can be looked after by a dedicated chaperone on the ground who will accompany them in a vehicle to where you will touch down, so that they can watch you arrive and then enjoy the bush breakfast with you.

For safety reasons, you will be briefed before entering the basket to start an amazing safari in the air.

At the end of your balloon ride, there is a champagne toast and a bush breakfast, depending on the package you have paid for.

Hot Air Balloon Serengeti Experiences – The Best

Hot Air Balloon Serengeti Experiences - The Best

The hot air balloon pilot will not ascend beyond 1000 feet, remaining just above the treetops to maintain a panoramic view and provide an excellent perspective of the wildlife below.

This offers an amazing opportunity for photos as you marvel at the extraordinary scenery of the Maasai Mara – Serengeti Savannah region.

This activity can be scheduled either in the morning or evening, depending on your preferences and schedule.

In the evening, you can witness the sunset in the Savannah, while in the morning, you can experience the sunrise from the east.

The sunlight bathes the Savannah in a bright, brilliant glow, allowing you to spot numerous animals in the conservation area, such as antelopes, elephants, buffaloes, lions, among others.

These activities provide 2 hours of adventure, allowing you to appreciate the beauty of Tanzania fully.

Afterward, you head towards a morning meal table set up under an umbrella tree near the landing site.

You’ll be served a well-prepared English bush breakfast with a tropical Savannah ambiance, accompanied by wildlife views.

The experience concludes around 9:00 am after spotting various game, including elephants, topis, kobs, gazelles, lions, leopards, and plenty of buffaloes.

Following the adventure, you can return to your hotel or camp with your guide-driver.

Please note that this activity can be integrated into Tanzania safari itineraries that include a night in central Serengeti.

Efforts will be made to assist with transfers for visitors staying in different locations, but departure times are typically early in the morning and may vary depending on the specific location.

While this activity can be done year-round, it is recommended during the dry season.

The cost of a hot air balloon ride in Tanzania is $500 per person, and please be aware that children under the age of 7 are not permitted on the balloons.

Tanzania Balloon Safaris in Serengeti National Park

Hot Air Ballooning in Serengeti National Park

Taking a Tanzania hot air balloon safari in Serengeti is essential, providing travelers with an unforgettable experience.

The park is one of the most famous parks in Africa and the most visited in Tanzania, renowned for the Great Wildebeest Migration , which is the greatest wildlife spectacle on earth.

Every year, millions of wildebeests, thousands of zebras, gazelles, and other antelopes, followed by numerous predators like lions, cheetahs, and hyenas, take a journey to the neighboring Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya, while monstrous crocodiles lie in wait in the Grumeti and Mara rivers.

The best way to experience this phenomenon is by taking a hot air balloon safari in the park.

There are four sites in Serengeti where you can take a Tanzania balloon safari from every day at 6:00 AM.

The early morning flight gives you an opportunity to see nocturnal animals returning to their dens and a beautiful sunrise over the horizon.

The cost of a hot air balloon trip in Serengeti is $599, including transportation to and from your hotel, the flight, and a champagne breakfast after landing.

The total number of people in the balloon should be 16 only, and the Tanzania balloon trip lasts 50 to 70 minutes.

How long is a balloon safari in Serengeti?

The hot air balloon safari in Serengeti national park under normal circumstances lasts for 1 hour or 1.5 hours.

The balloon ride depends mainly on the weather conditions among other factors like the route the hot air balloon pilot takes.

To take part in this thrilling experience over the Serengeti plains, you should book for the activity in advance preferably during the months of June to October and or January and February.

These are the dry months in Serengeti national park.

Is a Serengeti Balloon Safari worth it?

Yes, it is. Serengeti National Park is the most popular wildlife game park in Tanzania and is best visited during the dry months of June through October when the wildebeest migration is at its peak.

This is also the most recommended time to take hot air balloon rides over Serengeti National Park because the weather is more favorable compared to the wet season when early morning rain could hinder your hot air balloon safari in Tanzania.

Imagine yourself gliding over the Serengeti and witnessing the natural spectacle of the migration, involving millions of wildebeests and thousands of other antelopes, including zebras, gazelles, and elands, among others.

The Serengeti hot air balloon safari costs between 500-600 US dollars per 1-hour ride (subject to favorable weather conditions) per passenger.

The cost of the hot air balloon ride includes a concession fee, bush breakfast, champagne at the end of the ride, the hot air balloon flight certificate, and it also covers the high maintenance costs and servicing of the hot air balloon.

From the pre-launch to flight time and post-launch hot air balloon activities, a dedicated team of about 20 people, including an experienced pilot, ensures your safe takeoff and landing.

Depending on the capacity of the baskets, each trip can have anywhere from 6 to 16 people aged 7 years and over and in good health.

In favorable conditions, your hot air balloon ride will take an hour, and in case of harsh weather conditions that call for a cancellation of a ride, it can be rescheduled to another day, or you will receive a full refund.

Hot Air Balloon Safari in Ruaha National Park

Hot Air Balloon Safari in Ruaha National Park : Located in the southern region of Tanzania, Ruaha National Park is the largest national park in the country, spanning over 13,000 square kilometres and making it a popular destination for Tanzania safari travellers. A far cry from the crowded tourist routes of northern Tanzania, Ruaha National Park offers fantastic game watching for unspoiled game and wilderness through game drives or foot safaris. Its scenery is covered with baobabs. But today, visitors can enjoy an exciting floating journey on a hot air balloon safari in Tanzania’s largest wildlife protected area, Ruaha National Park, to learn more about the local species.

The first official balloon ride in Ruaha National Park successfully took off on June 15, 2018, and as a result, safari-goers visiting the park are still welcome to enjoy an open-air wildlife ride from the top. This luxurious hot air balloon safari experience is the creation of Serengeti Balloon Safaris, which has been operating in the central Serengeti since 1989 and is said to have flown more than 250,000 visitors.

Ruaha National Park, known for its dense population of elephants and isolated location, features a unique topography of large, arid landscapes with the Great Ruaha River flowing through it, providing vitality to the local wildlife. Aerial views of a herd of elephants digging under the enormous baobab trees, kudus and giraffes slake their thirst by the river while keeping an eye out for predators, and the sound of a hundred birds chirping will elevate your Hot Air Balloon Safari experience.

This trip offers early morning flights that can accommodate up to 12 passengers for an incredible hour-long wildlife game viewing experience. The flight passes above the river and seasonal tributaries where antelopes like impalas and waterbucks can be seen around hippos, hungry crocodiles, and leopards. Additionally, you will be able to see prides of lions roaming freely in the vast savannah, cheetahs stalking in the grasslands, and sly leopards hiding behind large rocks.

There is no upper age limit for Ruaha National Park’s Hot Air Balloon Safari, although participants must be reasonably fit and able to climb into and out of the basket, grip rope handles, and bend their knees. The minimum age is seven years old. Pregnant ladies and those with health or mobility concerns should not balloon.

Tanzania safari activities in Ruaha National Park

A wide variety of tourism activities are available in Tanzania’s largest national park, Ruaha National Park, making it an exceptional destination for tourists interested in exploring the region. These activities include.

Game drives

The most popular and essential adventure activity in Ruaha National Park is going on a game drive. From the comfort of a safari vehicle, visitors can take in the breathtaking scenery, the great Ruaha River, a variety of bird species, and an amazing wilderness with a rich diversity of wildlife. Enjoy the amazing predators—lions on the riverbanks, cheetahs on wide-open plains, and leopards—along with other magnificent animals on your game drive. The leopards are particularly elusive.

Walking safaris

Experience the true wonders of the park up close and personal as you stroll through the virgin bushes that reach your legs. You’ll meet small animals that are too small to see from a safari vehicle and learn about all the little details of this untamed area while being escorted by a park ranger or guide.

Bird watching

One of the best tourist activities in Ruaha National Park is bird watching. If you’re an avid bird watcher, all you need to spot great birds of interest is a good pair of binoculars, a birding pack, a brimmed hat, comfortable shoes, and all of your gear. Take part in a bird watching safari here and take in the amazing abundance of over 575 recorded bird species that call Ruaha home.

Since most big cats are nocturnal predators, you can usually find them lazing in the shade during daytime game drives. But, if you go on a night game drive, you can explore the park’s shadowy corners with an armed park ranger and witness these nocturnal animals at their most active as they stalk their unsuspecting prey. They will make your safari unlike any other since they are constantly engaged and on the hunt.

Cultural  tours

Nothing will immerse you in a truly African experience like adding a cultural safari to one of the park’s surrounding local communities in addition to your game adventure safari. These cultural tours are additional tourist activities in Ruaha National Park, where you can interact with the incredible locals, the Masai people, and gain insight into their fascinating and distinctive cultures, traditional beliefs, and way of life. These experiences will leave you with unforgettable memories.

Accommodations in Ruaha National Park

Ruaha National Park offers a wide range of lodging choices, many of which have stunning settings in unique locations both inside and outside the park. The lodging options in Ruaha National Park include lodges, bandas, hostels, and tented camps. Each of these types of accommodations offers a unique blend of rustic luxury, mid-range, and affordable budget amenities, all of which offer excellent value for money and offer the ideal wild stay experiences.

Jongomero lodge

Another luxurious lodge that offers authentic seclusion luxury for a pristine African bush experience is Jongomero lodge. It is located in the southernmost portion of the park, set back among the shade-giving Acacia trees, distant from other campers and offering unparalleled seclusion. Guests at the camp are likely to see hippos splashing in the surrounding permanent water or elephants strolling down the Sand River directly from the balcony. Scattered along the riverbank, Jongomero boasts eight big and luxurious tented rooms, each with a spacious private veranda and gigantic thatched roofs. The tents are placed on wooden platforms. The term “tent” is insufficient to describe them; they are elegant and roomy. High-end furniture, polished oak flooring, and thoughtful accents all combine to create an opulent, yet rustic, atmosphere inside.

Hot Air Balloon Safari in Ruaha National Park

Jabali Ridge Camp

The wildlife-rich Ruaha National Park is home to the opulent Jabali Ridge camp. Perched on a rocky bluff with views of the Mwagusi River and Ikuka escarpment, the lodge features eight suites, including one private house, each with an ensuite bathroom, flushing toilets and private outdoor lounges. Other amenities include a swimming pool and spa. During the rainy season, when you visit Jabali, you may observe the Mwagusi starting to flow after it has been dry for seven months, and you can hear the thunderous Ikuka waterfalls. Elephants scrounging in the sand for water and herds of buffalo in the riverbank are two more thrilling sights to behold during the dry season.

Mwagusi safari camp

Guests at Mwagusi Safari Camp enjoy a “unique” tented safari experience, with each en suite tent being comfortably secured under a cooling thatched roof and snuggly nestled into the sandy banks of the Mwagusi River. The camp is built almost entirely of organic natural materials and has a friendly and peaceful atmosphere.

Ruaha River Lodge

The only luxurious ‘lodge’ in the Ruaha is called Ruaha River Lodge, and it is made up of 24 stone chalets that along the river’s edge. Each chalet boasts a large veranda with breathtaking views from the front, and the spacious interiors include a writing desk, a sitting area, and twin or double beds. Every chalet has a spacious bathroom with a shower, two sinks and salvaged wood décor in the back.

I’ve Worked in Safari Travel for More Than 20 Years — These Are the 4 National Parks in Tanzania I Send Travelers To

A-List travel advisor Samantha Gordon recommends where to stay and what to expect.

For many first-timers to Tanzania, the game-filled plains of the Serengeti ecosystem and the sheer wonder of the Ngorongoro Crater are undoubtedly must-see destinations. But while these northern parks attract the most attention, travelers in the know are heading off the beaten track — to the remote corners of southern and western Tanzania. This is where you’ll find the country's two largest parks (Nyerere National Park and Ruaha National Park), as well as the rarely visited Katavi National Park and the stunning Mahale Mountains National Park, which is home to an extraordinary troop of chimpanzees and only accessible by boat.

As a safari expert, I'm sharing my recommendations for each of these secluded, wild places. Here's an overview of Tanzania's best under-the-radar national parks.

Nyerere National Park

Nyerere National Park is a 11,583-square-mile landmass in the larger Selous Game Reserve, affording a high degree of protection for its prodigious wildlife population. Only a handful of lodges exist here (for the time being), so game drives are blissfully peaceful. For those keen to get out of a 4WD vehicle, afternoons can be spent boating and fishing on the Rufiji River, observing birds and hippos, or taking a nature walk with a qualified safari guide. My favorite place to stay is  Sand Rivers camp, with its private rooms perched on the high banks overlooking the Rufiji. For a proper safari adventure , you can also spend the night in Sand Rivers' gorgeous fly camp and eat dinner next to a campfire before retiring to your simple tent under a blanket of stars.

Ruaha National Park

Ruaha is possibly Tanzania’s best kept secret. Covering an area larger than Maryland, it's home to just 10 lodges — and a tenth of the world’s lion population, plus a whopping 450 different bird species. The best way to experience its sheer beauty, size, and emptiness is via a hot-air balloon ride. You have to wake up at dawn, yes, but then you're rewarded with a stunning sunrise followed by a calm flight over the pristine landscape, without a vehicle in sight. I recommend returning to the luxurious surroundings of  Jabali Ridge  camp to relax by the pool before your afternoon game drive.

Katavi National Park

Due to rains and flooding, this remote park is accessible only five months of the year — and that means everything feels just a little bit wilder. Located in Tanzania's far west, Katavi National Park is much less visited than other national parks in the country. The local wildlife includes large herds of buffalos, zebras, giraffes, and elephants, and there are plenty of hippos and crocodiles. Predators such as cheetahs, leopards, lions, and hyenas can be found here, too, but don’t expect lots of cat sightings. The real draw of Katavi is its remoteness — there are so few other visitors that you'll feel like you have the park to yourself.

Mahale Mountains National Park

Mahale, the most beautiful of Tanzania’s national parks, lies on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika (the second-largest lake in the world by depth and volume, after Lake Baikal in Russia). The lush rain forest that rises steeply from the water’s edge is one of only two protected areas for chimpanzees in the country (the other is the nearby Gombe Stream National Park, made famous by Jane Goodall ), plus it's home to the largest known population of eastern chimpanzees in the world. There are no roads or infrastructure within the park boundary, so the only access is by boat. The trekking can be tough (straight up and hot!), but is incredibly rewarding. I never thought I would match the experience of tracking gorillas in Rwanda and Uganda, but spending time in Mahale with chimpanzees came extremely close. I experienced the best guiding I have had in more than 20 years of African explorations. The head guide, Butati (pronounced to rhyme with Bugatti), was born in this park. He knows not only the names of all the 70-something chimps, but also their relationships, families, and characters quirks.

What's a day like at Mahale? Guests have an early breakfast and then get ready to trek, awaiting the radio call of rangers who alert the camp of the day’s first sighting. Then, they head straight out on foot in search of chimps. After the morning’s exertions (and, ideally, incredible wildlife sightings), there's nothing more inviting than a boat trip out onto Lake Tanganyika — I recommend diving into the crystal-clear waters as the best way to cool off.
