Here is a calendar with more of the best free walking tours in Munich.

These walking tour companies run their guided walks on a pay-what-you-like basis, which means there is no upfront fee to join a tour.

At the end of the tour, they’ll ask you to pay what you think the experience was worth or what you could afford. Most tourists who enjoy their outings will tip their guides €10-€15, but that's up to you!

However, although these companies often get very good reviews, their affordability and popularity mean that, during the busy season, these walks are generally at capacity.

While a free walking tour of Munich is often led by entertaining and knowledgeable tour guides, the tour group is usually large enough to prevent you from interacting with your guide like you could in a small group.  

So, for travelers who want to take tours with fewer people, we recommend paid small-group tours .

If you decide to take a paid small-group tour, you might be able to see even more popular sites such as the Viktualienmarkt, the English Garden, and other sites that sometimes are not included on free outings.

FREE TOURS WITH THE MUNICH TURBOPASS

If you’re considering buying an attraction discount pass, the all-inclusive Munich TurboPass includes a 1.5-hour walking tour through Old Town as well as several other walking tours.

The travel card option gives either a free ticket or a 20% discount!

This tour’s normal price is €15 per adult and €13 per teen, young adult, or senior over 65. 

This walk runs at least once a day, every day of the year except for December 25! It is the perfect overview of Old Town.

This company also offers a pay-what-you-want walking tour of Munich, this one specifically focusing on the Old Town sector of the city.

You can expect to see a lot of the most notable sites in the city centre, including several historic locations over the course of this 2.5-hour tour.

This tour is offered daily at 10:45 am in both English and Spanish. There is also a second Spanish tour every day at 11:45 am.

This is another company offering a tour of Old Town Munich, this time covering some of the darker aspects of Bavarian history.

Visitors can expect to learn about the third reich history of Munich, including tales of Adolf Hitler and the Beer Hall Putsch. You'll also see notable sites such as the Old Town Hall and Mariensplatz.

This outing is available from Tuesday - Saturday at 10:45 am, on Wednesday and Friday at 15:00 (2 pm), and at 11:00 am on Saturday. The tour will last for approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes.

Sandemans New Europe Munich

The free tour of Munich with Sandemans is a 2.5-hour walking overview of this beautiful German city starting at Marienplatz and ending close by.

Your local guide will make sure to show you all the must-see points of attraction, including the Glockenspiel, Frauenkirche, and the Hofbrauhaus. 

The walks begin at 10:45 am and 14:00 (2:00 pm) every day in both English and Spanish. 

You can also take paid tours and day trips covering specific topics and attractions.

Oktoberfest in Munich Tours

If you're curious about the tradition of Oktoberfest that takes place every October, there are actually free tours covering this side of Bavarian culture.

While drinks and food aren't included, you will learn about the history of this event and how it became an international sensation.

You can expect to visit landmars such as the following:

Rick Steves is well-known for his many, many city guides and tours.

Luckily, his team offers one audio city walk for Munich , which is downloadable and comes with a downloadable map as well.

The audio guide runs for just over one hour and features 20 stops. 

Free Tours By Foot

Even if you don't have the earbuds for an audio tour, you can still use our self-guided walking tour of Munich as long as you have a smartphone.

This outing closely follows a similar path to the Rick Steves audio tour, but it's a bit shorter in length.

Free walking tour with Mark was great

The guide was very good overall, he mixed in humor along with the history and he didn't go delving into intricate boring details. He kept the history at the appropriate higher levels throughout the tour. The tour took about 3 hours and covered and big sites in the downtown area. I definitely recommend to others.

Wow! What a great option for Munich travelers. This tour was not too heavy on the walking, but jam-packed with great information and an overview of the best locations of Munich. I was lucky enough to go on a day where Katy (I think the only true Munich girl tourguide) and she did such a fabulous job. She really knew her history of Germany and Bavaria, as well as sprinkled in some fun facts about the best biergartens and beauty of Bavaria. This tour is a great option for solo travelers, as well as small groups! Great way to spend the first morning or afternoon in one of Germany's most beautiful and fun cities.

We had an excellent tour with Mark. It was really informative and engaging, giving us lots of details we would never have found by ourselves. Mark was really passionate and informed about the history of the city. He was also really friendly and interesting to listen to. I'd highly recommend this tour, and Mark as your guide. Also to add the day we did the tour was pouring with rain and cold, but this didn't dampen the experience at all (pardon the pun)

Having done free tours in other cities I decided to do one in Munich as well and wasn't disappointed. Ben might be the best guide I have had so far! He was funny, entertaining, had a lot of tips and recommendations and made the whole tour feel like a story. Great way to be initiated to the city.

the best walking tour in Munich!

our walking tour guide are the best ever! He is funny, sporting and knowledgeable tour guide. the tour takes about 3 hours and we really enjoy our walking tour. I have joint few walking tour in Europe but this is the best. if you like history of the city and in a short trip free walking tour perfect for you. its will cover a lot of places and you can ask the tour guide any recommended restaurant to try. unfortunately we have forgotten our tour guide name. Its a guy, he is wearing traditional cloth of Germany (since we joint the tour during October fest), 10am tour on 2nd October 2016. he is funny, and creative. we have this war acting using blue and red balloons during our tour and the favorite answer to our tour "BEER" :) you know who you are...

Although marked as a free tour there is a commission cost of 2.50 euros the guide needs to pay to Sandemans so expect to pay more and feel uncomfortable at the end. It´s a good light hearted introduction to the town with plenty of anecdotes but if you have just one day in town it could be better to browse round to find a tour which takes you to more sites. The tour is more an introduction of where you might want to visit later

If you go with sandemans neuschwanstein tour do not pre-book, go on the morning and make sure your guide is not Giorgio. He is rude, in your face, offensive, swears a lot, awkward and made this entire trip very uncomfortable. Even consider not going with sandemans at all, just buy your train tickets there and save yourself the bad experience.

This is an amazing walking tour hosted by Ben Reynolds. He is a breath and depth of history and local knowledge. He imparted history in an entertaining way, with great enthusiasm, Very easy to listen to and made our trip to Munich. unlike any other tour he did not push any additional packages on to you. If you visit Munich this is a must.

I love this company and have been doing their tours all over Europe! Jovanny was an amazing free city tour guide who was extremely enthusiastic and fun! I really loved how passionate he was when speaking about the "Mad King", it made me want to visit the Neuschwanstein Castle even more! Really wish he was my tour guide that day! Dachau tour with Tom was very haunting and solemn and gave me a lot of extra insight and knowledge I had not previously had before. I feel like this tour was very well done and set up very respectfully. I did the beer tour which was OK. I had done some amazing beer tours in other cities with this company previously, so I had high expectations. I feel like the beer tour has SO much potential in this amazing city, there could have been more enthusiasm and more participation from the tour guide (little things like encouraging cheers, taking the tour through the museum section and explaining it vs self guided). The 2 locations the tour brings you on were really cool though and I do not regret going on this tour at all. A good night in the end, just not what I was expecting.

Took the free city tour at 14:00 with Aileen, the tour guide. She was simply excellent. Demonstrated mastery of the subject, as well as precise command of the language. Only wish I knew about this tour when I was here with my wife last month.
