All Aboard! 3 Unique Seneca Lake Boat Tours

With summer rapidly approaching, it’s finally time to turn our attention to summer’s splendor. As the temperatures continue to rise and the Finger Lake wilderness jolts back to life, hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers set their sights on Seneca Lake. On the north end of Seneca Lake lies Geneva, NY, a quintessential harbor town filled with ice cream shops, local wineries, and the prettiest castle in the state. On the lake’s southern reach rests Watkins Glen State Park , a spellbinding natural wonder. We like to think that Geneva (and beautiful Belhurst Castle , for that matter) offers an idyllic blend of history, sophistication, and four-season fun! Thus, it’s quite common for guests to inquire about the most popular Seneca Lake boat tours. There’s just something genuinely luxuriating about motoring through a pristine lake in the heart of summer’s haze, surrounded by friends new and old.

The Top 3 Seneca Lake Boat Tours

A View of Geneva's Harbor During One of the Best Seneca Lake Boat Tours

The most popular boating option in the region is Captain Bill’s Seneca Legacy , a sturdy cruise ship with decades of nautical “experience.” The Legacy steams past many of the lake’s most beautiful stretches, including steep bluffs, bustling marinas, and head-turning Belhurst Castle herself. Seneca Lake Reel Tours , meanwhile, is a much more modest affair. Curious travelers can hop aboard this covered pontoon for an intimate, 75-minute voyage. True Love Schooner Excursions , as its name suggests, is for mirthful sailors young and old. Sailing is, after all, a tad bit more sophisticated and intricate than your average tour.

A Self-Guided Voyage

If a trip aboard one of the three best Seneca Lake boat tours isn’t in the cards, feel free to rent a vessel from Stivers Seneca Marine . Whether you plan to hook a monster trout, dive into Seneca’s center, or simply jet through the water without a care in the world, we recommend giving Stivers’ team a call. These state-of-the-art pontoons are perfect for any type of aquatic adventure, even if it’s as simple as throwing an anchor into the lake and drifting to sleep.

From the Dock: Seneca Lake’s Many Sights and Sounds

Guests are often pleasantly surprised to discover Belhurst Castle ’s lengthy wooden dock, ideal for an afternoon picnic, a bit of bass fishing, or a quick Instagram session. Families often plop down on the dock to watch the boats cruise (or sail) by, while munching on a light snack. The Hobart and William Smith Sailing team often practices and hosts competitions in these waters. It’s a lot of fun to watch these kids compete!

Historic Seneca Lake Hotels

After enjoying one of the top-reviewed Seneca Lake boat tours with the family, return to Belhurst Castle for the remainder of your stay. Yes, we’re minutes away from craft breweries , local wineries , and breathtaking waterfalls , but you won’t have to leave this historic estate to get a true sense of what makes the Finger Lakes so incredibly alluring. Please give us a call today at 315-781-0201 to book a long-awaited escape to sunny Geneva.

DOUGLAS DEVELOPMENT ANNOUNCES THE RETURN OF PUBLIC TOURS AT SENECA ONE

Seneca One welcomes the public into the tower for a comprehensive look inside WNY’s tallest building!

BUFFALO, NY , April 21 –  Seneca One will open the doors to small, socially distant, and enthusiastic tour groups to explore the nearly completed 1.4 million square foot complex from top to bottom. Buffalonians who have been viewing the development and progress from a distance on the news and in the paper can now register for a tour and come see everything for themselves.

This tour offers the chance to see Buffalo like you have never seen it before while at the same time learning about what is to come at WNY’s tallest building.

The 1.5 hour tour will include a trip to the 38th floor featuring 360 degree views of WNY and Canada, and then a trip down the tower with stops at various technology spaces as well as a comprehensive look into the forthcoming amenities, retail options, and event spaces. At each stop, a Douglas Development representative will provide insight regarding the history and future of each space.

Public Tour Schedule

Wednesdays at 5:30 PM

Saturdays at 12:00 PM

RSVP at senecaonebuffalo.com

“ The tour of Seneca One goes into great depth about the building’s history as well the vision for the years to come. Our guests will see what a $186M redevelopment looks like starting with the best view of Buffalo there is: over 500 feet up in the sky.  Learning about the technology aspect of Seneca One is almost like peeling back the curtain and taking a sneak peek into the future of Buffalo.” said Sean Heidinger, Director of Business Development for Douglas Development.

While individual RSVPs are mandatory to participate in the public tours, Seneca One is also welcoming in group tours which are perfect for corporate outings, family visits, etc. Tours require masks to be worn at all times. The tours do not include any of M&T’s spaces and Seneca One asks that you wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather.

MILITARY HISTORY AND WHITE DEER TOURS

Deer haven park, deer haven park home to the majestic seneca white deer.

Deer Haven Park is located in the heart of the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York. Nestled between the two largest of the Finger Lakes, it occupies a place formerly known as the Seneca Army Depot.

seneca tours seneca

Built in 1941, the Seneca Army Depot covered over 10,000 acres of central Seneca County. It was commissioned by the US Department of Defense in response to the beginning of WWII and was originally dubbed the Seneca Ordnance Depot. The Depot was the US Army’s main East Coast munitions storage facility until it was decommissioned in 2000.

In 2003, the US Military turned the property back over to the Seneca County IDA. Soon after, the County developed about 3000 acres to include several businesses, government offices & institutions and industry. Later, in 2016 the newly established business entity, Deer Haven Park, LLC purchased the remaining 7,000 acres.

Secrets of Seneca County Historical Driving Tour | Seneca Caverns

Embark on a captivating journey through the wondrous past of Seneca County, Ohio, with the Secrets of Seneca County Historical Driving Tour! The next stop on the journey is:  Seneca Caverns   ( 15248 East Township Road 178, Bellevue , OH 44811 , Stop #17)

Imagine two curious boys, Peter and Henry, chasing a rabbit down a hole and stumbling upon a hidden world. That's the legendary tale of how Seneca Caverns, Ohio, was discovered in 1872. While whispers of the cave existed earlier, the official discovery sparked excitement. Armed with just candles and lanterns, early explorers ventured into the unknown, their imaginations painting vivid pictures of the vast caverns below.

Despite initial attempts to open the cave to the public, it wasn't until a young lawyer, Don Bell, stepped in. Inspired by his love of geology, Bell meticulously explored the cave and discovered new passageways leading to an underground river. With his family and a dedicated crew of workers, Don Bell embarked on a mission to share this natural wonder. They spent years clearing paths, building steps, and installing lighting, all while preserving the cave's natural beauty. Their dedication resulted in the grand opening of Seneca Caverns in 1933.

seneca tours seneca

Today, Seneca Caverns, nicknamed "The Caviest Cave in the USA," welcomes visitors on a journey through geological history. It's a testament to human curiosity, perseverance, and our deep respect for the natural world. You can explore the cave with a guided tour during their season that runs from May until September/Mid-October. Hours include:

  • May & Sept-Mid Oct:  Sat & Sun, 10 am-5 pm (last tour 4 pm)
  • Summer (Memorial Day-Labor Day):  Daily, 9 am-7 pm (last tour 6 pm)
  • Closed Nov-April

At the start of your journey you’ll descend a staircase into the unknown, ducking under rocks as the mystery of the cave slowly reveals itself. As you descend the staircase you may notice the temperature getting cooler, 54 degrees Fahrenheit to be exact, as the cave is consistently the same. You may be welcomed into the cave by a “cave kiss” or a drop of water from the ceiling of the cave.  However as your journey begins, you’ll quickly realize this is an experience unlike any other in the area. Officially designated as a Registered Natural Landmark by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Seneca Caverns in Bellevue is one of Ohio’s largest underground caves, and a geological wonder to behold.

The cave is formed from a karst, or a landform consisting of dissolving limestone, dolomite, or gypsum, which creates sinkholes and caves. On your journey in the cave, you may come across some stalactites in their initial stage of development. Stalactites at this size are called “soda straws” because they are hollow and very fragile. While you won’t see any stalagmites or massive stalactites, the soda straws stand as a reminder of the wonder of science taking place all around us.  The cave consists of seven levels descending into the earth. At the lowest level, 110 feet below the surface, sits the “Ole Mist’ry River '', which is a part of the water table. The water in the river is naturally potable and consistently 48.9 degrees Fahrenheit.

seneca tours seneca

Check out their Facebook page for special events that are offered such as After Hours Lantern Tours and Gemstone Discovery Days. After you have explored the cave,  you can take a peek into the olden days by gem mining with the Seneca Mining Company.  With all the fun of exploring the cave, don’t forget to check out the wide selection of options at the gift shop. So what are you waiting for? Get out and explore the underground adventure that is Seneca Caverns! Learn more here .

Representatives from Owl Homes of Fredonia, a leading builder of modular and manufactured homes, delivered donation checks of $3,000 for the Seneca Sachems Football Organization, and $2,000 to the Seneca Nation’s Tribal Advocate Program.

“Every day, we strive to provide services and programs that serve the needs and enrich the lives of every Seneca on our territories through every stage of their life,” said Seneca Nation President Rickey Armstrong, Sr. “We are incredibly grateful to our friends from Owl Homes for their donations. Their generosity will help to ensure the continued strength of the Seneca Sachems and our Tribal Advocate Program, two programs that both serve important roles in the Seneca community.”

The Seneca Sachems Football Organization is a youth football and cheerleading program open to Seneca boys and girls ages 6-11. The organization’s teams compete in the Cattaraugus County Midget Football League at the Flag Football, PeeWee, and Midget divisions, with football and cheer teams for each division. In 2023, more than 70 Seneca youth participated on the Seneca Sachems teams, and were supported by numerous dedicated volunteer coaches, organizers and supporters. Board members for Seneca Sachems Football Organization, including Board President Charlie Scanlan, Vice President Dakota Snyder, Treasurer Keira Thompson, and Secretary Kortney Keyes, accepted the donation on behalf of the organization.

The Nation’s Tribal Advocate Program provides assistance to enrolled Senecas in emergency situations, including loss of income, disability, loss of home, and other emergencies. Services include minor home repair, emergency food pantry, and Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) assistance. The program also offers referrals to all Seneca Nation members for the Weatherization Program operated by Cattaraugus Community Action in Salamanca. Kerry Kennedy, Tribal Advocate on the Seneca Nation’s Cattaraugus Territory, and Kerry Isaac, Tribal Advocate Administrative Assistant, accepted the donation on behalf of the Tribal Advocate Program.

“Owl Homes has been fortunate to develop a strong partnership with the Seneca Nation over the last 30 years in helping to address housing needs on the Nation’s Territories,” said Dominic Bellanti, President of Owl Homes. “As a Western New York company, we know how important the Seneca Nation is to our community. We also believe in giving back to the community. Supporting the Seneca Sachems and the Tribal Advocate Program is a reflection of our valued friendship with our Seneca neighbors.”

Six arrested after retail theft operation at Walmart in Seneca Falls

  • April 26, 2024 3:19 PM / Updated: April 26, 2024 3:19 PM

Staff Report

On April 25 a joint retail theft operation by the New York State Police and the Seneca Falls Police Department led to six arrests at the Walmart Supercenter on North Road in Seneca Falls. The operation aimed to curb theft in high-turnover retail environments.

Officers, in collaboration with Walmart Loss Prevention, apprehended individuals from surrounding areas, each charged with petit larceny. Among those arrested were Makenna L. Rowealvaro of Geneva; Sierra M. Zerniak of Waterloo; Timothy L. Ward and Catina Y. Overbaugh, both of Seneca Falls; Lisa M. Racano of Ovid; and Emily E. Bell of Auburn.

The suspects were processed and issued appearance tickets, with court dates set to address the charges in the Town of Seneca Falls Court. The operation underscores ongoing efforts to enforce the law in retail settings.
