Seniors are finally out and about due to YMCA bus trips

AVON, Ohio -- If there’s any group that has been struggling to get out and go places since COVID-19 has calmed down, that group would be seniors.

To aid them in combating loneliness and isolation, the YMCA of Greater Cleveland has all kinds of reasonably priced bus trips for seniors to go exploring, see new sights and get together with others.

There are different choices and different locales but, according to the YMCA headquarters office, all the branches have one or more bus trips planned.

Interviews with the active older adult coordinators at two west side YMCA branches provided a peek into what has been a successful part of the YMCA’s activities for years, but something that will be extra appealing during this post-COVID year.

Kathy McKean is the seniors coordinator at the French Creek Family YMCA in Avon, 2010 Recreation Lane.

When asked why the seniors’ monthly bus trips are so popular, she said, “Because they love to go and they love to go with a community they know and are comfortable with. They have a wonderful time. I put out the flyers (for trips) and they fill up quickly.”

Each trip usually leaves the YMCA between 8 and 9 a.m. and returns about 6 p.m., she said. The trips are usually sold out each month for the 56 bus seats available.

Costs for the day trips generally range from about $100 to $150 and include a stop for a meal. The YMCA also offers multiple-day trips to places like New York City.

Interestingly, McKean said, the trips are open to the public, ages 21 and older, and they can take advantage of the trips no matter where they live in Greater Cleveland and whether or not they are members of a YMCA.

Though the trips are available to ages 21 and up, McKean emphasized that the trips are designed around the interests of seniors 55 and older. The lower age limit allows grandparents to bring their adult children or older grandchildren if they wish.

Lou Hamilton, a member of the French Creek YMCA for about 11 years, has taken quite a few of the bus trips.

“I have been on about 30 trips,” she said, “one-day trips or multiple-day trips. It is absolutely wonderful.”

Hamilton’s favorite trip was one to Nashville, Tenn., but she said, she also really liked her two trips to New York City.

“We become a kind of family on the bus,” she said. “There are a lot of repeat riders. It’s a time in which we have a great time together. If we weren’t a family prior to the trip, we are a family by the time we get back.”

At the West Shore Family YMCA in Westlake, 1575 Columbia Road, Terri Sullivan has been coordinating the bus trips since the branch started offering them in 2018.

Sullivan said the seniors have been yearning for the trips to begin again.

“The big thing I was hearing from them is about their loneliness, how much they miss their friends and missed social connections,” she said. “They wanted to get back out there.”

Norm Baxter, a frequent passenger on Sullivan’s trips, lost his wife four years ago and now comes to the YMCA for the travel adventures with the group.

Baxter said he usually goes on the day-long trips.

“I find them worthwhile. They are good. People see new things, and it all seems to work well. Some are just there to enjoy themselves, and some to make friends,” he said.

“People are more ready to do and enjoy things as a group. Going with a group, it’s more fun and not so intimidating.”

One of his favorite trips was to the east side of Cleveland to visit one of the casinos -- something he said he had always wanted to see.

On the value of the trips for seniors, Baxter said: “A lot of seniors don’t necessarily do things by themselves. It’s the opportunity to join others they can benefit from that they might not otherwise do.”

To understand the variety of trips offered by the various branches of the YMCA of Greater Cleveland, following is just a sampling of trips coming up for the French Creek YMCA:

The July trip to see the bridges in Ashtabula County and to tour a winery sold out quickly, but on the agenda now is an August tour of the historic Lakeview Cemetery, which includes lunch at the Mongolian Grill in Cleveland and a lake/river cruise on the Goodtime III.

In September, a group will go to see a performance of the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds from the Nautica Queen riverboat.

October will draw them all together again for a performance of “The Lion King” at Playhouse Square, with dinner at the Hofbrauhaus after the show.

November will feature a visit to the Great Smoky Mountains in Gatlinburg, Tenn., that will include a visit to the Dollywood Theme Park.

In December, the trip will be to Severance Hall to hear the Cleveland Orchestra Christmas Concert.

Sullivan noted that new trips are being added to the list regularly.

Those interested in checking out the 11 Greater Cleveland YMCAs for what trips they are currently planning for the rest of the year can visit the main YMCA website at https://www.clevelandymca.org/ , where all YMCA branches and trips are listed.

McKean spoke to the significance of seniors traveling together any time, but especially now with tough lessons learned during the pandemic: “It opens your world back up and connects you to other people. You see places you haven’t seen, or you see them with different eyes.

“It’s all about letting your spirits soar. We encourage travel for seniors, whether or not it is with us. Just go. We can’t wait any more. We have certainly learned that in this last year.”

Y Active Older Adults travel the world together (Join them!)

Active Older Adults YMCA program trip to Chicago at the Cloud Gate - "The Bean"

From a bus ride to the Cleveland Museum of Art to traveling by airplane to Iceland, the YMCA of Greater Cleveland’s Active Older Adults (AOAs) are on the move!  In fact, this year alone, our Y has scheduled more than 55 trips across town and around the world for its loyal AOAs.

The trips are designed to allow AOAs to explore new places, meet new people, and make new memories. The YMCA offers a variety of different travel trips, including:

  • Day trips:  These trips are typically one day long and include transportation, lunch, and admission to a local attraction.
  • Overnight trips:  These trips are typically two or three days long and include transportation, lodging, meals, and admission to local attractions.
  • Extended trips:  These trips are typically seven days or longer and include transportation, lodging, meals, and admission to local attractions.

“We love our Active Older Adults,” says Loni Beverly, YMCA of Greater Cleveland Association Active Older Adult Director. “They enjoy life to the fullest, whether it's taking a group exercise class together, playing pickleball, or traveling near and far. They are a wonderful example for all our members of the benefits of staying active, healthy and engaged. If not now, when?”

“i love all of the trips i’ve been on,” said ymca of greater cleveland aoa member millie gilly. “they are very well organized, very relaxing, and so much fun on my first trip i didn’t know anyone but it only took a few minutes to feel a part of the group. this is a great way to see the country and be with people you are comfortable with.”.

Examples of this year’s trips include going to Washington D.C., an extended trip to Ireland, taking a “coastal cruise” in the Carolinas, touring local houses of worship of all faiths and going to Mackinac Island.

There are many benefits of senior citizens traveling. Here are a few:

  • Improved mental health.  Traveling can help to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. It can also help to improve cognitive function and memory.
  • Increased physical activity.  Traveling often involves walking, hiking, and other physical activities. This can help to improve cardiovascular health, strength, and flexibility.
  • New experiences and perspectives.  Traveling exposes seniors to new cultures, people, and ideas. This can help them to learn, grow and develop a more open-minded outlook on the world.
  • Increased social interaction.  Traveling can help seniors to meet new people and make new friends. This can help to reduce loneliness and isolation.
  • Make new memories.  Travel creates new memories that will last a lifetime. These memories can help you stay happy and fulfilled in your later years.

JKL TOURS Friends you know and a company you trust!

THANK YOU for visiting our website. JKL TOURS has been offering group trips since 1994 and have been tremendously BLESSED by the amazing number of fun and friendly people that have chosen to travel with us. Our business grows every year by word-of-mouth advertising as friends want to share the fun and camaraderie of our trips with their friends.

We are all sharing this challenging time but we do look forward to a brighter future. We restarted our trip program in August of 2020, by offering SAFE and FUN trips and have continued to do so. JKL TOURS along with our Bus Partner – BARONS BUS – followed the CDC guidelines along with all State, County and city guidelines to create a trip program that is safe, fun and affordable. The guests that travel with us understand the SHARED RESPONSIBILITY of traveling as part of a group. Group travel provides a chance to enjoy an adventure with the extra benefits of feeling younger, feeling alive and connecting with others while still staying safe. You can join us for the camaraderie, companionship, value and safety our trips provide. Our trips are escorted by excellent, knowledgeable and caring guides with pickups on both the East and the West sides of Cleveland. Because these are unusual times, we have been challenged to be flexible in creating our trip program. To find out our latest list of trips, please call JKL TOURS at 440.942.5350, or send an email to [email protected]. With so many seniors wanting to get back to travel, many of our trips are selling out, so don’t hesitate to call or email. And with over 100 trips set up for 2021, we’ll have trips to 1) Ohio’s Amish Country – enjoy a delightful day seeing the beauty of Ohio’s rural countryside, learning about the Amish way of life and enjoying an amazing meal. 2) Mystery trips – we offer Fifteen (15) different mystery trips to smaller, out-of-the-way places you probably did not even know existed for a fun day of surprises. 3) Historic and Ethnic Cleveland – with 6 different customized itineraries, you can learn about the amazing history we have right here. From seeing where Moses Cleaveland landed in 1796, to the location of the original stockyards of 1881, to League Park where the Cleveland Spiders played in 1891, even Frankie Yankovic Square and so much more. Cleveland is a city with a tremendous history, present and future and we’ll see it all. 4) Wine tasting & Wine & Chocolate tours – Ohio was the Napa Valley of the US in the late 1800s and this tradition has continued with over 150 wineries. Join us as we sample the nectar of the gods with some trips including chocolate sampling at boutique chocolatiers! 5) Historic Houses of Worship – many immigrants came to our area in search of the American way of life and brought their religious heritage with them, as their lives centered around their church. We are blessed by an amazing number of museum-quality churches that were built in the late 1800s/early 1900s with incredible craftsmanship and amazing stories to match. 6) Theatre tours – if you enjoy live performances, then make sure you check out our trips to Rabbit Run in Madison to see “Always, Patsy” the Patsy Cline story, and “The Marvelous Wonderettes” a tribute to the sock-hop music of the 50s and 60s. Or you can see the many tribute shows and hear wonderful performers imitate legends, like “The Everly Brothers,” “The Four Seasons,” “Neil Diamond,” and more. We’ve already booked seats for 2022 to see “Ain’t Misbehavin’” at the Hanna and “My Fair Lady” at Playhouse Square Center!

We have plenty of day trips visiting exciting destinations e.g. Put-In-Bay, Niagara Falls USA, Fall Foliage trips, Ashtabula Covered Bridges, Barberton MUM Festival, Ohio’s Lavender Trail, Cleveland Indians Baseball games, and more. We also have overnight trips – Myrtle Beach, Pigeon Forge, Chicago, New York City, The Wild Mustangs of North Carolina, The Canadian Rockies Railtour, etc.

In addition to the many trips we offer directly, we have many Senior Centers that partner with us for their travel program. We look forward to hearing from you so you can join us to enjoy the amazing benefits of group travel and THANKS AGAIN.
