Washington, DC’s convenient proximity to the famous Blue Ridge mountains makes it a surprisingly great place for people who love to ski and snowboard. If you know where to go, you can definitely find some pretty epic places to go snowboarding and skiing near DC. To help you plan your winter sports travels, we’ve compiled this list of the absolute best ski resorts near DC.

Our Top Picks for Snowboarding & Skiing Near DC

Canaan valley resort.

• Location: Davis, WV
• Distance from DC: 179 miles (~3 hours)
• Accommodations Available? Yes, at the Canaan Valley Resort Lodge
• Experience Levels: All levels

While there are several fabulous ski resorts near DC, we’ve decided to start our list with Canaan Valley because it’s a beloved, well-rounded option for all levels of skiers in the East Coast region. With 48 ski and snowboard trails and a vertical drop of 850 feet, Canaan Valley Resort draws in new and repeat visitors from all over the East Coast year after year.

Complete with a year-round resort, as well as a spa, fitness center, and several dining options, Canaan Valley Resort is a perfect spot to enjoy winter in West Virginia. Even if you’ve never skied before, there are plenty of options to rent gear and take lessons. More advanced skiers can take advantage of the several black diamond-rated trails and the economic season passes.

Seven Springs Mountain Resort

• Location: Somerset County, PA
• Distance from DC: 193 miles (~3.5 hours)
• Accommodations Available? Yes, stay at a cozy condo onsite
• Pass Association? No

Known as one of the best ski resorts near DC to “get some air,” Seven Springs Mountain Resort’s slopes include beginner-friendly bunny hills to adrenaline-inducing double black diamond slopes and terrain parks. For the thrill-seeking skier, there are few competitors to Seven Springs’ 33 ski trails.

For beginners (kids and adults), there are group and private lessons available with a handful of easy slopes to practice on. There are gear rentals available as well that you can pick up at the lodge. Ten different ski lifts dot the park to help you get around from trail to trail, and there are a handful of different lodges on the resort grounds where you can grab a hot meal or take a break from the slopes.

Snowshoe Mountain Resort

• Location: Snowshoe, WV
• Distance from DC: 221 miles (~4.5 hours)
• Accommodations Available? No, but several options in nearby Snowshoe
• Pass Association? Ikon Pass

To many, there is perhaps no more beloved place to go skiing near DC (and on the East Coast) than Snowshoe Mountain. Home to a few beautiful mountain condos, this family-friendly ski hideaway is a place many families come back to year after year.

The largest ski area in the resort is Snowshoe Basin, which houses almost all of the beginner-friendly slopes in the area. For more experienced and adventure-seeking snowboarders and skiers, the Western Territory is where you’ll find several of the black diamond and double black diamond slopes. After you’ve flown down each slope, there are 10 lifts around the park to take you back up to the top for another round, or to call it a day at one of the many beautiful condos and lodges nearby.

Best Ski Resorts Near DC for Beginners

Beginner skiers have a different set of needs than their more experienced counterparts, and certain ski resorts are better for learning than others. The following ski resorts near DC are great if you or your companions are new to winter sports – they have great class offerings, affordable gear rentals, and fantastic all-inclusive packages so you can learn quickly!

Wintergreen Ski Resort

• Location: Nellysford, VA
• Distance from DC: 182 miles (~3 hours)
• Accommodations Available? Yes, at the Mountain Inn
• Experience Levels: Beginner to intermediate

Author side note: I grew up skiing at Wintergreen Resort and absolutely love it here. While it’s quite a bit smaller than some of the larger ski resorts near DC, it’s a fun, family-friendly environment that’s perfect for beginner to intermediate skiers.

If you’re a beginner skier looking for a fairly accessible set of slopes in a comfortable resort setting, Wintergreen is a great place to go skiing or snowboarding near DC. Located outside of Charlottesville, VA in Nellysford, Wintergreen Resort is a smaller, family-friendly ski resort located in the Blue Ridge Mountains. On the premises, there are ski trails, a large lodge with a few restaurants, and a spa.

With daily group classes, ski and snowboard rentals, and a wide variety of easy to intermediate slopes, Wintergreen is a fantastic place to go skiing or snowboarding near DC for beginners. Their Discover Ski/Snowboard programs include three days of rentals, classes, and lift tickets at very affordable rates. Wintergreen Resort also offers night skiing, a different, interesting alternative to your average daytime slopes.

Bryce Mountain Resort

• Location: Basye, VA
• Distance from DC: 116 miles (~2 hours)
• Accommodations Available? No, but there are several options in nearby Basye
• Experience Levels: Beginner and intermediate
• Pass Association? Indy Pass

Known as a year-round recreation area for snowboarders, skiers, golfers, and bikers, Bryce Mountain Resort has a tiny ski area with beginner and intermediate slopes that are great for learning. Located just 2 hours from Washington, DC, the resort is a fairly reasonable day trip or overnighter from the city.

You may look at Bryce Mountain’s trail map and notice it’s a lot smaller than other resorts on this list. But don’t be fooled – this set of slopes has everything you need to learn how to snowboard or ski, including rentals, guided classes, and beginner-friendly packages. Also, for those who aren’t interested in skiing or snowboarding, there’s also tubing available at the resort (which is a fun way to enjoy the snow without needing any ski/snowboarding skills).

Massanutten Resort

• Location: Massanutten, VA
• Distance from DC: 120 miles (~2.5 hours)
• Accommodations Available? Yes, several options

For families wanting to learn to ski together, Massanutten Resort is one of the most well-rounded and fun places to go skiing and snowboarding near DC for beginners. Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, it’s a great place to learn to ski or snowboard in a beautiful and accessible place. Aside from skiing, the resort also has tubing, an indoor water park, and a spa – perfect for the whole family!

What we love about Massanutten for beginners is that they have learn-to-ski and snowboard packages from beginner to intermediate, meaning that there are lessons to suit your needs as you acquire new skills. There are 3 beginner-friendly ski slopes and 6 intermediate ski slopes, meaning those new to snow sports can keep coming back again and again as they learn.

Wisp Ski Resort

• Location: Garrett County, MD
• Distance from DC: 180 miles (~3 hours)
• Accommodations Available? Yes, at The Lodge at Wisp

As one of the few places to go skiing and snowboarding near DC located in Maryland, Wisp Ski Resort is a fantastic place to learn how to ski. Like the other resorts in this section, there are many lessons and packages available to new skiers and snowboarders, and the resort is welcoming of those who have never set foot on a slope before. Within the resort, there are slopes ranging from very easy to “black diamond” difficult , meaning the resort attracts a wide variety of experience levels.

Even though Wisp Resort caters to all levels of skiers and snowboarders, we’ve included it here because it has one of the widest selections of easy/beginner-friendly slopes on our list. With 10 trails rated as green and another 14 with a blue/intermediate rating, there’s a LOT of skiing and snowboarding you can do here, even if you’re new to the sport(s).

Closest Places to Go Skiing and Snowboarding Around DC

Liberty mountain resort.

• Location: Fairfield, PA
• Distance from DC: 78 miles (~1.5 hours)
• Accommodations Available? Yes, several options onsite
• Pass Association? Epic Pass

Clocking in at just 1.5 hours from Washington, DC, Liberty Mountain Resort is the closest ski resort to the capital city on our list. With fantastic ski packages and resources for beginners, Liberty Mountain Resort is a fantastic place to learn to ski among friends and family. Because it’s so close to DC, you can take a day trip to the resort or stay the night at the resort’s beautiful lodge.

As do the others on this list, Liberty Mountain does offer beginner lessons, rentals, and packages, so don’t sweat it if this is your first time on the slopes! The resort will make sure you’re in good hands to learn how to ski or snowboard with ease.

Whitetail Ski Resort

• Location: Mercersburg, PA
• Distance from DC: 89 miles (~1.5 hours)
• Accommodations Available? No, but some options in nearby Mercersburg

Located in Pennsylvania just 1.5 hours from DC, Whitetail Resort is another fantastic option for those wanting to hit the slopes as close as possible to the city. Whitetail Resort is a day-use recreation area with access to ski slopes, gear rentals, dining, lessons, and more.

Complete with 23 ski trails for all levels, beginner to advanced, as well as a terrain park, there’s no shortage of activities at Whitetail Ski Resort. And, because it’s so close to DC, you can definitely come to Whitetail Ski Resort on a day trip (as there’s no resort on the premises).

Best Places for Cross-Country Skiing Near DC

• Accommodations Available? No, but some options nearby

For those wanting to avoid the slopes but still go skiing, cross country skiing is the perfect opportunity. Luckily, in the Canaan Valley, there’s a wonderful cross country ski resort called White Grass Touring Center . Whether you’re a beginner skier or have skied cross country your whole life, the grounds at White Grass are a great spot to enjoy the snow and ski near DC.

White Grass is different because it’s got several trails over largely flat terrain , which requires a whole different skill set than skiing on mountain slopes. Luckily, the resort offers cross country ski lessons, and very affordable day rates and rental fees. For just $65, you can get an hour-long lesson, a ski rental, and a day pass for the area.

Blue Knob Resort

• Location: Claysburg, PA
• Distance from DC: 166 miles (~3 hours)
• Accommodations Available? Yes, at the Blue Knob Resort

Blue Knob Resort is a year-round resort that offers winter sports, namely skiing and snowboarding, but we’ve included it in this section because it’s one of the few resorts that offers cross-country skiing as well as snowshoeing. With its immense variety of snow sports, as well as an on-site lodge, Blue Knob is a well-rounded resort where you can try all kinds of winter activities.

Day use and rental fees for the Nordic/cross-country ski area are very affordable, giving all visitors the opportunity to give this different type of skiing a try. There are also lessons available for both snowshoeing and cross-country skiing for beginners wanting to learn new skills and techniques for the sport. Of course, if you realize that cross-country isn’t your thing, you can hit the regular, downhill trails on skis or a snowboard as well!

Other Great Places to Ski Near Washington, DC For All Levels

Ski roundtop.

• Location: Lewisberry, PA
• Distance from DC: 113 miles (~2 hours)
• Accommodations Available? No, but several options in nearby Mechanicsburg

For families or couples that want to ski and play, Ski Roundtop is a fantastic Pennsylvania ski resort that’s home to several ski slopes suitable for all levels. At just 2 hours from Washington, DC, it’s easily accessible from the city center, perfect for a day trip or a short weekend getaway.

At this medium-sized resort, you’ll find several ski slopes ranging from easy, beginner-friendly bunny hills to double black diamond, thrilling trails. There are also lessons, rentals, and tubing available for those who have less experience.

Omni Homestead Resort

• Location: Hot Springs, VA
• Distance from DC: 214 miles (~3.5 hours)
• Accommodations Available? Yes, at the Omni Homestead Resort

If you’re the luxury-loving type looking for more of a relaxing ski getaway than an extreme winter sports adventure, the Omni Homestead Resort might be the perfect place for you to go skiing and snowboarding near DC. This historic estate has hosted the likes of Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Ronald Reagan, and several other US presidents and celebrities.

The slopes here are best suited for beginner and intermediate level skiers, as they’re mostly green and blue-rated trails. Once you’ve had enough skiing, you can relax in one of the resort’s many naturally-heated pools, wander the opulent hallways and lobbies of the hotel, or book a spa treatment.

Montage Mountain

• Location: Scranton, PA
• Distance from DC: 240 miles (~4 hours)
• Accommodations Available? No, but stay at the nearby Hilton Scranton

For adventure junkies, Montage Mountain Resort boasts some of the most challenging ski trails near Washington, DC. Only 20% of the resort’s 26 trails are beginner-friendly, with 45% tagged as intermediate and another 35% recommended for experts only. Complete with a terrain park, several black diamond and double black diamond trails, and night skiing, Montage Mountain isn’t for the faint of heart.

However, if you’d like to visit but don’t have much experience with skiing, there are rentals and lessons available for beginners, as well as tubing that’s suitable for all ages. While there’s no lodge on the premises, you can eat at the Slocum Restaurant or in the no-frills food court on-site.

Elk Mountain

• Location: Union Dale, PA
• Distance from DC: 270 miles (~4.5 hours)
• Accommodations Available? No, but stay at the nearby Hotel Anthracite

At a whopping 4.5 hours from Washington, DC, Elk Mountain isn’t quite close enough for a day trip. However, we’ve included it because it’s one of the best options for terrain skiing near DC in the beautiful Endless Mountains (near the Poconos). It’s got trails for all levels of skiers, night skiing, and several challenging terrain areas to cater to any experience and thrill level you’re looking for.

On the resort’s grounds, you can rent or buy gear, take lessons up to intermediate level, and enjoy the terrain park. While there’s no lodge on the resort, you can hang out in the Winter Garden restaurant and a cafeteria to warm up in between hitting the slopes.

What the Appalachians lack in elevation, they make up for in proximity, with day-trip and weekend getaway options as close as 90 minutes and vertical drops nearing 1,000 ft! The broader Southeast area spans  the  Blue Ridge Mountains including Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia and North Carolina. Many local resorts mirror the amenities and family activities of their larger Rocky Mountain counterparts, presenting great alternatives to ski or ride before getting the TSA involved.

Our list has something for everyone to  hit the slopes . We divide it into three categories —  day trips, weekend getaways, and longer trips, complete with a guide to the most convenient flight options. The driving times and distances referenced throughout our list are from the Washington Monument.

Liberty mountain.

Carroll Valley, PA; 1.5 hours driving from D.C.                  

Overview. Part of the  Epic Pass and only 1.5 hours drive from D.C. in Carroll Valley, PA, Liberty Mountain Resort is well suited for the first few trips to the slopes. Lift tickets are reasonably priced ($50-60, $90-100 with rentals) and there are short trails of varying difficulty. The resort has recently invested in its snow-making capabilities and all of the trails are well covered. The tubing park has 14 lanes and its own magic carpet.

Getting To : Ample free parking, ~1.5 hours drive from D.C. (~78 miles)

Special Programs : CLC (Children's Learning Center) Ski Camps available for children ages 4-10 and CLC Snowboard Camps for children ages 6-10. Full day includes lift ticket, 2 hour lesson and rentals (9am-4pm) for $125 (non-peak) to $185 (peak) ​

Whitetail Resort

Overview. A local favorite, Whitetail in Mercersburg, PA, was also recently added to the Epic Pass . Regarded as a great beginner spot, the area is almost perfectly divided by terrain difficulty. With high-speed quads and steeper drops, it can have the feel of a bigger mountain resort. Similar to other resorts local to the District, Whitetail has snow tubing, terrain parks, and night skiing. The area was granted its first liquor license in 2019. 

Getting To : Ample free parking, ~1.5 hours drive from D.C. (90 miles)

Special Programs : As a gateway mountain, there are special packages for beginners. Never-evers can purchase reduced lift tickets with restricted access to the lower mountain, rentals and lessons for ~$100 ($55 early season)

Massanutten

Overview. Massanutten, a few hours from D.C in Harrisonburg, Virginia, is an Indy Pass resort. It matches other local resorts with skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, and snow tubing but also has more elevated dining options and an Indoor/Outdoor WaterPark. It offers almost as much vertical as Snowshoe at 1,110 ft, even though the elevation is lower. The almost even breakdown of terrain difficulty means it’s suitable for skiers and riders of all levels.  

Getting To : Ample free parking, ~3 hours drive from D.C. (120 miles)

Harrisonburg, VA; ~3 hours driving from D.C.

Breakdown: 31% Green, 46% Blue, 23% Black

TOP WEEKEND TRIPS FROM D.C.

Snowshoe mountain resort.

Snowshoe, WV; ~4.5 hours driving from D.C.                  

Overview. A 4.5-hour (228 miles) drive into West Virginia brings you to the largest resort in the Mid-Atlantic. Snowshoe Mountain Resort is perfect for long weekends or getting comfortable before pushing further. Reversing the traditional layout, the “base” is at the Summit, so arrive ready to ski down. The mountain is comprised of three distinct areas, Snowshoe Basin, the Western Territory, & Silver Creek. With 1,500 vertical feet, a 1.5 mile run and night skiing, there’s plenty to fill a weekend. Colder temperatures and ample snow-making capacity allow the resort to open around Thanksgiving and the season extends through March. The base has ample lodging and restaurants. T here are also several on-mountain dining spots - we like Hoot's bar. The Ikon Pass offers unlimited access to Snowshoe.

Getting To :   Drive. Hop on I-66 and watch for the turn off at I-81.

Overview . A favorite day trip for  yinzers , Seven Springs is a 3.5 hours drive (194 mile) from D.C.(and ~1 hour from Pittsburgh) and offers year round fun for the entire family. The largest ski resort in Pennsylvania, it has 750 feet of vertical drop, nationally recognized terrain parks and night skiing. Seven Springs is also known for its golfing, mountain biking, and 2,000 foot alpine slide. The varied terrain is good for testing your skills as trails range from beginner to expert, along with the renowned terrain parks. Beware though, it is highly dependent on snow gods!! When it's time for après, the locally famous Foggy Brews boasts 50 taps, a 100 foot long bar and hearty eats to warm up after a day on the slopes.

Getting To : Drive. Hop on I-66 W and take I-70 W as you enter Pennsylvania. While the fastest, this route has tolls.

While the local resorts are great for convenience and for learning, we do understand the need to travel further in search of larger resorts with more terrain variety . We also understand the importance of minimizing hassle and maximizing value. 

Fortunately, D.C. has direct flights to most major U.S. ski destinations. The table below provides an overview of direct flights from D.C. along with the most convenient resorts from those destinations. Between the D.C. area’s three major airports - Washington National (DCA), Dulles (IAD), and Baltimore (BWI) - you can reach a half dozen ski gateways, and a surprising number of resorts, with reasonable fares.

Park City, UT; ~5 hour direct flight from D.C.               

Overview. The largest ski resort in North America, Park City spans 7,300+ acres and has over 340 trails. Only 40 minutes from Salt Lake City, Park City is easily accessible from D.C. Snowfall is a reliable 355 inches annually and the base depth averages 46 inches. The terrain offers incredible variety. Over 40% of slopes are intermediates. Experts will find plenty of steep and deep terrain, head to 9,990 on the Canyons side or McConkey’s and Jupiter Bowl on the Park City side. With 8 terrain parks, snowboarders are welcome. The base of Park City is in the heart of the historic mining town of Park City. The ski school is excellent, and rigorous, offering full day mountain programs for children as young as three. The surrounding area has an amazing selection of accommodations with hotels and single family homes, many of which have ski-on ski-off access.

Overview. An easy trip from Denver, reasonable lodging options and convenient parking are just a few reasons why Keystone is one of the most family friendly resorts in the Colorado Rockies. However, don't be fooled by its "family-friendly" reputation. Keystone has plenty for off-piste enthusiasts - rock crags, bowls, glades and backcountry account for more than half of the terrain. Snowfall is reliable, averaging 225"+ annually. Keystone is easy to navigate with two base villages. Lakeside Village, 5 minutes away, has more dining options, shopping and one of the world's largest Zamboni maintained lakes for ice skating. A trip to Keystone is easy to combine with visits to nearby resorts. It's on the Epic Pass and there are special value passes to combine with nearby Breckenridge and Crested Butte. Keystone also has the largest night skiing area in Colorado.

Getting To :   There are lots of options from D.C. to Denver and Keystone is ~1.5 hours drive from DIA.  United offers direct flights from IAD to Denver; Frontier has a nonstop from DCA to Denver; Spirit flies direct from BWI to Denver; Southwest offers nonstop flights from both IAD and BWI.

Bring the whole family. Keystone has something for everyone. Kidtopia has no end of fun activities and kids under12 ski free (with lodging package)

Backcountry terrain is under the radar; even though it's cat accessible, it tends to be less traveled

Fast groomers abound on all three mountains

Getting around is easy. Parking is free and resort shuttles run regularly 

Relatively less snowfall than other CO resorts (and the terrain on the North Peak requires significant snowfall)

This is our number one spot to rent gear before a day trip from D.C. They have an outstanding selection of boots and a team of experts to help with the fitting. They also have the only  indoor ski facility in the mid-Atlantic, for all year round skiing.

REI, Washington D.C. | NoMa

Brand new, this huge flagship store is in the NoMa neighborhood by the NoMa-Gallaudet Red Line station. REI has a large selection of clothing, gear, and equipment at reasonable prices. They have a ski and snowboard shop for maintenance and tune-ups (Mid Oct - Early March) and offer classes on equipment care. They also offer free one-on-one boot fitting appointments .

Located off the Leesburg Pike in Bailey’s Crossroads, REI offers a wide selection of clothing, gear, and equipment, as well as a ski and snowboard shop for maintenance and tune-ups (Mid Oct - Early March). They also offer free one-on-one boot fitting appointments .

The mountains of Virginia may not be the highest, but for beginner families, the State offers all you could want in a skiing resort. But which out of the two is the best?

It’s a difficult choice but Massanutten Ski Resort wins by a whisker. The resort is fully geared up for dealing with beginners, it’s in a beautiful setting and there is plenty of accommodation in the resort, to relieve some of the stress.

2. bryce resort .

Bryce Resort  is a year-round tourist destination for winter sports months where more than 60 ski racers practice on the mountain. During the summer the activities change over to mountain biking, hiking, zip-lining, and golf.

First opened in 1965, Bryce Resort is in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley, close to the West Virginia border. The resort now extends to 400 acres and is member-owned.

Bryce Resort is in the foothills of the beautiful Allegheny Mountains, which are about 115 miles due west of Washington DC.

What’s the Skiing like?

The skiing at Bryce Resort is on one face of the mountain, where there are two chair lifts, one a quad and one a double, as well as a couple of conveyors, lifts lower down in the beginner area.

The terrain is ideally suited to beginners, partly because it’s not that demanding but maybe more importantly more experienced (and faster!) skiers will most likely pick another resort more in line with their ability. This should mean beginners will have a calmer environment to practice in.

The beginner area is just in front of the Shenandoah Center at the base of the resort. There are two shorter green runs for beginners, Little Nip and Bunny, where you can practice away from other skiers.

From there you can move on to the Double Chairlift which delivers you to the top of the longer Redeye green run, which takes you back down to the base. Once you feel confident on that run you can graduate to the next lift, the Revenuer’s Run which gives you access to the selection of blue runs from the summit.

Learning to Ski

There are  first-time lesson  packages for skiing and snowboarding for eight-year-olds and older. These can be on a private basis, or you can add members of friends and family to create a pod. This is a cost-effective and fun way for a beginner family to learn as a group.

There are also two Kinder School classes for skiing and snowboarding which take ages 4.5 to 7 and 6 to 7 respectively. Private lessons are available for all ages as well. The price of the day lift ticket and equipment rental is included in the lesson price.

The resort has extensive  snowmaking , and all trails are lit for  night skiing , except White Lightning and Hangover. At the base of the ski runs, there is an 800-foot-long (244 m) snow tubing run and a nearby ice-skating rink.

The snow tubing run has three dedicated lanes and there is a conveyor lift to take you back to the top of the hill. A snow tubing ticket lasts for 90 minutes and has to be reserved online beforehand.

Snow tubers can also pay a small premium to gain access to the ice-skating rink or you can buy admission separately. A ticket gives you access to the rink for one hour, which excludes the time taken for lacing your boots.

For lunch and après ski at Bryce Resort skiers often head to the Copper Kettle restaurant, where you can choose from sandwiches, burgers, salads, and pizzas. Alternatively, roll up for a beer at the end of the day and relax with the sounds of a live band.

If you don’t want to waste time off the runs during the day, then the Shenandoah Center is probably a better bet. The slope-side indoor grill keeps breakfast and lunch dishes coming throughout the skiing day.

Off the Slopes

There is no on-resort accommodation at Bryce Resort but there are several rental companies listed on the website that can offer a range of accommodation nearby.

Properties include chalets, cottages, and condos for all configurations of friends and family. Many properties are fully equipped with fireplaces or wood stoves, and a full kitchen. Some are also pet friendly, for that home-from-home experience.

While others have the luxury of features like hot tubs, jacuzzis, saunas, and steam showers.

Bryce Resort Stats

1. massanutten ski resort.

Massnutten Resort  is located 10 miles from Harrisonburg the closest town and approximately 120 miles from Washington DC and 100 miles from Richmond. It’s in a picturesque part of the Shenandoah Valley.

From the top of the hill, you can get long-distance views across the valley and even across the Blue Ridge Mountains.

The skiable terrain extends over 70 acres of mostly lightly wooded terrain on one face of the hillside.

Beginners will be able to locate the easiest slopes as they are just in front of the Lodge and Snow Sports School. Here you’ll find three conveyor lifts and plenty of wide-open space, where you can find your feet.

When you need more of a challenge you can try the nearby Easy Rider quad chair and come back down on the Easy Street green run.

From there it is only a few steps to take the Creek Side chair, which will bring you down on the last of the green runs, Southern Comfort. This whole region has been designated as a slow area, so you can be confident you won’t feel intimidated by faster skiers.

Once you have all the green runs under your belt it’s time to take a small leap of faith and try out some of the blue runs higher up on either side. All the trails at Massanutten Resort are now lit with LED lighting to extend the skiing day on cloudy afternoons and into darker evenings.

The website at Massanutten Resort has some useful information for beginners including videos, FAQ’s, and feedback from beginners who still come regularly.

Private lessons are available for all ages although youngsters under six years need their own dedicated instructor. The  resort’s instructors  use the Terrain Based Learning system, where specially shaped snow features help students to control speed and body position. This builds confidence and removes the traditional fears and anxieties

There are plans underway to expand the beginner terrain and make the snowmaking facilities more extensive to ensure better coverage during the season from December to March. The resort is a year-round business with golf and other activities during the summer.

Massanutten also has three terrain parks and a  snow tubing  park.

You can grab a bite if you head over to Base Camp, where you can choose between sandwiches, burgers, pizzas, pasta, and salads.

The restaurant recommends diners check for seating availability via Yelp or the resort app, as the restaurant is very busy at peak times.

Alternatively, the Campfire Grill can offer you hand-crafted pizza, camp-stove chili, chicken dumplings, steakhouse burgers, and skillets among others.

There is plenty of choice for accommodation at Massanutten Resort both on and off the mountain.

At the resort, you can choose between the hotel rooms of Massanutten Resort Hotel or a selection of townhouse condos with all the amenities you’d expect. Alternatively, there is Woodstone Meadows with its selection of larger four-bedroom condos which are off the mountain but still nearby.

Massanutten Resort is one of the best ski resorts near DC! It’s beginner-friendly and is chock-full of other winter activities to do when you’re done with the slopes!

Winter at Massanutten Resort

For over 40 years, Massanutten Resort has been the go-to place for DC-area families to ski, snowboard, and indulge themselves in a smorgasbord of other winter activities. Located just 3 hours from Washington, DC , Massanutten Resort has earned its reputation as one of the area’s premier winter sports destinations.

But as someone who decidedly did not ski, snowboard, or do anything that involved strapping wood to my feet and hurtling down a mountain, that didn’t mean anything to me. While my mom and I recently discovered that Massanutten Resort is an amazing fall destination, we still had never been in the winter and experienced all that made the resort is actually well-known for.

In the hope of maybe, finally, getting over my fear of skiing with Massanutten’s ski lessons and the tantalizing lure of all of Massanutten’s other winter offerings (like nighttime snow-tubing!!), it was time to fix that and find out for ourselves why Massanutten is one of the best ski resorts near DC.

Nighttime on Massanutten’s slopes

It’s Always Snowy, Even If It’s Not Cold

One big reason that Massanutten is one of the best ski resorts in near DC is that they have snow-making down to a fine art. As a southern resort, Massanutten can’t rely on natural snow levels if it wants to provide snow sports. Virginia’s weather is fickle: sometimes the state gets a lot of snow in the winter, sometimes it gets almost none. Christmas Day can be either 80 degrees or 20. Fortunately, the resort has found a way to work around unpredictable Mother Nature.

The resort has over 200 snowmaker guns, which each convert 40 gallons of water per minute into fine, white powder. Though the resort makes snow most days when the temperatures are below freezing, once there’s a solid base of snow, the slopes can stay open for a while, even during long periods of warm weather.

At most ski resorts, you have to bundle up in multiple layers to stay warm on the slopes. At Massanutten, there’s a good chance you’ll be able to go skiing or snowboarding on warm, sunny days. The best of both worlds!

Learn to Ski at Massanutten

Massanutten is also able to teach every type of beginner to enjoy skiing, from little kids, elderly, and people in between who just had not had good, prior skiing experiences. Like me.

Sometimes the best way to learn something is “baptism by fire,” as the saying goes. But other times, it’s the fastest way to make sure you never try something ever again. At least that’s what happened with me and skiing. Instead of fire, my first time involved “friends” taking me to the top of a 12,000ft mountain in Colorado in the middle of a snow squall and saying “you can do this! See you at the bottom!” Lord knows how many minutes later filled with sitting, sliding, rolling, and crawling, crying, and praying my way down that mountain, I sat in front of my steaming mug of hot chocolate and adamantly decided I did NOT like skiing.

However, your first time doesn’t have to be like mine! It turns out that if you learn to ski before you try coming down from the top of a Rocky Mountain, it can actually be an enjoyable experience! And Massanutten is the perfect place to learn before tackling any giant mountain slopes.

And after 40 years of experience, Massanutten has figured out the most effective ways to teach new skiers and snowboarders. The resort’s snowsports experts have created an all-terrain program designed to teach beginners how to navigate different types of snow-covered landscapes. Instead of putting you on top of a mountain and saying “you got this, good luck!”, Massanutten’s instructors take learners step-by-step through a series of stations and obstacles until they’re ready to go skiing on their own.

My mom and I got to test this out for ourselves with a private lesson with ski instructor extraordinaire, Brian. As mentioned, my other skiing experiences had been less than ideal, and my mom hadn’t been skiing in decades. We were the perfect pupils to see whether or not Massanutten’s program actually works.

Brian started at the VERY beginning with us, with making sure our helmets were properly fitted, showing us how to strap on our ski boots, and how to attach (and detach) the skis from our feet. Then he took us out on the slopes – er, the not-quite-flat-but-almost training turf. From learning how to start and stop, successfully make a “pizza,” make gentle turns, to using a lift, each time we successfully conquered a new technique, Brian would take us to a new part of the training area, each one successively more difficult than the previous.

By the time we actually started going down hills, small as they were, both my mom and I felt like we actually knew what we were doing and not just hoping for the best! At the end of the day, both us were talking about how we need to go back and practice and ski some more before we forgot everything we learned. A much different ending than my time skiing in Colorado!

Other Winter Activities at Massanutten

Something else that makes Massanutten an epic winter destination is that the resort doesn’t offer JUST skiing and snowboarding. If those aren’t your thing, or you need a break from time spent on the slopes, Massanutten offers a variety of other winter activities!

Snow-tubing

• Snow-tubing is something the entire family can enjoy, no lessons required! Grab an innertube, take the lift up to the top, and then fly back down the mountain. It’s basically sledding, but 100x more exciting – there are 16 lanes and a 120ft vertical drop back to the bottom. And Massanutten ups the ante even more by offering “Northern Lights” snow-tubing. You can tube all day long, but once the sun goes down, Massanutten puts on a multi-colored light that makes tubers think they’re suddenly in Alaska, playing under the real Aurora Borealis.

• In the winter, Massanutten converts its basketball courts into a 4900 square ft. ice-rink. Because what’s a proper winter vacation without ice-skating?

Where to Eat

Done playing in the snow and ready to warm up and grab a bite to eat? Massanutten has several delicious options!

Base Camp Bar and Grill

Base Camp is located right next to the main chairlift and is my favorite place to hang out at Massanutten. On cold days, you can stay warm by sitting in the glass-enclosed bar area while watching people come racing down the slopes. Or you can relax by one of the large firepits on the deck. The food is casual but delicious – if you’re there on the weekends, be sure to order the smoked prime rib!

Or an equally acceptable steakhouse salad!

Encounters Lodge

Open only during ski season, Encounters Lodge is located in, as the name suggests, the ski lodge at the base of the main ski slopes. It has a fully stocked bar and light table fare, as well as multiple TVs for those looking to catch up on their favorite sports games while taking a break from the outdoors. Every Friday and Saturday night, you can use your slope-use ticket for free admission to Live at the Lodge, the perfect way for those 21 and over to end the day!

Ski Lodge Cafeteria

Located in the same building as Encounters Lodge, the Ski Lodge Cafeteria is perfect for the skier or snowboarder looking to grab a quick bite to eat. A quick service counter with a wide variety of both breakfast and lunch/dinner foods, it’s the right place for people who want to get back outside as soon as possible!

Lift Coffee Bar

If all you want is a caffeine-hit, warm cup of chai, or a creamy hot chocolate to keep you going, head to the Lift Coffee Bar. It’s conveniently located inside the General Store, attached to the ski lodge.

Skiing in Virginia sometimes means drinking iced coffee on a ski slope!

Whether you’re a beginner skier or snowboarder or just need your winter sports fix, Massanutten is an amazing destination. With its array of teaching programs, ever-present snow (despite the weather!), and plethora of winter activities, it’s certainly one of the best ski resorts near DC. What more could you ask for?!

I didn’t even know there is a ski resort in DC. So is it possible for people working in the capital to go for a quick ski during their lunch breaks or is it too far away for that? Not sure if I want to try skiing but I give something a go once. Also would love to try snow tubing, it looks totally awesome and I missed this chance when I was in Banff, canada last year.. So wish I done that now.

Good to know there is a great ski option outside of Washington DC. We both used to ski. But with less practice these days, we would definitely need a place like Massanutten Resort with good lessons. Although I might have more fun snow tubing! Probably less chance of breaking a bone.

It looks like a great place to learn how to ski. Like you, I wasn’t a fan of skiing when I first tried it either. I guess it takes some time to get used to and find the fun in. I think I would opt for the warm chai and call it a day.

This looks like a great ski resort! I am a beginner skier so I would be looking to Massanutten for lessons. Good to know they have 40 years teaching experience because I’ll need all the help I can get! And in the worst case, you’ll find me at the fire pit with an iced coffee. It’s a win-win situation!

So sorry you had that terrifying first ski experience. But, it looks like with Brian’s teaching skills you overcame your fear and had fun! It is a great sign that they have been in business for 40 years, it sounds like they have a loyal family tradition for the local DC area. Snow tubing looks fun, I especially like it at night and then cap your night off in the lodge with a apres ski drink and food.

Good for you for getting over your fear and trying skiing again. Ski lessons are a wonderful way to learn to tackle the hills and gain confidence. That’s great you enjoyed your ski lessons and that it made you want to go back to practice more. For me, I’d like snow tubing and ice skating, and it’s good to know that they have that here. I never knew that nearby Washington DC there are ski resorts too. Massanutten Resort really looks must visit place for DC-area families to ski, snowboard, and indulge themselves in a smorgasbord of other winter activities. It is good that it is located just 3 hours which is very near from the nation’s capital. I would love to visit this place when I visit Washington DC next time.

I am not sure that I can learn to ski, but snow tubing sounds perfect for me! The food options at the resort also look lovely!

I have close friends who live in Baltimore and DC, so I’m down that way often. But skiing? Ah I am not coordinated enough for that! I’ll go tubing or you can find me in the lodge drinking hot cocoa 😉

Despite living in the DC area three different times, I never knew there was skiing nearby. What a discovery! And the fact that there are plenty of runs for beginners to intermediates is right up my alley!

The Best Ski Trip Spots near D.C.

When you think of Washington, D.C. , you probably don’t think “skiing.” But D.C. lies a few hours from beautiful ski resorts in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Maryland. If you’re drawn to the idea of escaping the city and spending a day or a weekend in the mountains, National Charter Bus can help.

Best if you want to stay close to D.C.

Liberty mountain resort.

Address:  78 Country Club Trail, Fairfield, PA 17320 Distance from D.C.: About 2 hours

Located just 10 miles outside of Gettysburg, Liberty Mountain is the closest ski resort to D.C. and an excellent choice if you’re planning a day trip. It boasts 16 trails, 3 terrain parks, 9 lifts, and the ability to make snow artificially throughout the resort.

If skiing and snowboarding aren’t your speed, this is also the perfect resort for snow tubing, with 15 individual lanes lined with snow embankments to keep tubers from crashing into one another. Since the drive from D.C. only takes 2 hours, you may be able to get away with renting a minibus instead of a full-size charter bus if you’re with a smaller group.

Whitetail Resort

Address:  13805 Blairs Valley Rd, Mercersburg, PA 17236 Distance from D.C.: About 2 hours and 15 minutes

Whitetail Resort boasts one of the highest ski slopes within 2.5 hours of D.C., with a drop that extends 935 feet. Even if you’re not up for a 900-foot drop, you can enjoy your choice of 25 trails and 2 terrain parks served by 9 lifts.

Whitetail isn’t all about height and speed, though. This resort also offers a snow-sports program to help children and adults with disabilities experience outdoor winter activities. If your group wants to participate in the program and needs an ADA-accessible bus , just let us know when you call to book.

Best if you’re traveling with kids

Wisp ski resort.

Address:  296 Marsh Hill Rd, McHenry, MD 21541 Distance from D.C.: About 3 hours and 30 minutes

Wisp Ski Resort welcomes first-time skiers and young children with one of the best learn-to-ski areas in the Mid-Atlantic. The Bunny Hill has three “Magic Carpet” conveyor belts which each go up one-third of the hill. The slope gradually becomes steeper as you board each belt, but you can move at your own pace and you never have to get on and off a ski lift.

Once you’re ready to hit the actual slopes, you can take advantage of long, shallow trails and designated “slow zones.” But don’t worry if there are people in your group with a little more experience. The resort offers 34 trails of varying difficulty and four freestyle parks, so you can split up and tackle the right slopes for you.

Massanutten Resort

Address:  1822 Resort Dr, McGaheysville, VA 22840 Distance from D.C.: About 2 hours and 15 minutes

Nestled in a cozy mountain village roughly 2 hours from D.C., Massanutten offers great skiing, with a 1,100-foot drop on its highest slope, 14 trails, and a terrain park. But what makes it so great for kids and families isn’t its skiing, as impressive as it is. It’s everything else it offers—indoor ice skating, tubing, and, best of all, an indoor waterpark.

That’s right. When you’re done hitting the slopes, you can pull off your jacket, put on your swimsuit, and go from riding a tube down snow slopes to riding a tube down waterslides. Looking for a more relaxing activity? Float down the lazy river, lounge in the hot tub, or visit the spa. Because the resort has so many different activities and is so expansive, it’s ideal for large school or scouting groups.

Best if you can’t get enough skiing

Snowshoe ski resort.

Address:  10 Snowshoe Dr, Snowshoe, WV 26209 Distance from D.C.: About 4 hours and 45 minutes

This resort blows guests away with its size. It’s the largest ski area in the entire Mid-Atlantic region, with 60 trails and 5 terrain parks spread over 257 acres. It also typically gets more snowfall than other Mid-Atlantic resorts and boasts a 4,848-foot tall mountain with a drop of 1,500 feet.

Because Snowshoe lies about 5 hours from D.C., you’ll probably want to visit for an entire weekend, not just a day. You may also want to request extra amenities for your charter bus to keep everyone entertained. It’s easy to make it through a 5-hour drive if you have a flat-screen TV and a couple of DVDs or free WiFi so you can stream YouTube and Spotify.

Canaan Valley Ski Resort

Address:  Park Rd 826, Davis, WV 26260 Distance from D.C.: About 3 hours and 15 minutes

Canaan Valley caters to people who go to a ski resort to ski, not to relax. It doesn’t have a high-speed lift or tons of lodging within walking distance, but it does have 47 slopes and miles of cross-country trails in a beautiful setting. If you’re traveling with hard-core skiers, this is the resort for you. There’s snowmaking on more than 75% of the mountain, and 44% of the trails are marked as advanced.

Don’t panic if your group includes a mix of hardcore and less experienced skiers, though. Canaan Valley has plenty of beginner and intermediate trails, and if people need a break from skiing, your charter bus can take you to the closest restaurants or bars.

Best if you’re all about the amenities

Wintergreen ski resort.

Address:  39 Mountain Inn Loop, Nellysford, VA 22958 Distance from D.C.: About 3 hours and 15 minutes

Open all four seasons, this huge resort in the Blue Ridge Mountains complements its skiing, snowboarding, and snow tubing offerings with hiking, fishing, mountain biking, and horseback riding. If your group is into sports, you can play a round on the championship golf course or sign up for lessons from the award-winning tennis program. Ready to relax? Try the swimming pool and full-service spa.

Just because it has a ton of other offerings doesn’t mean Wintergreen neglects its ski trails, though. You can coast down slopes designed for skiers at a variety of levels, from the Lower Dobie Trail, which is meant for beginners, to the Upper Cliffhanger, which is ideal for experts. Ask for free WiFi on your charter bus so you can pull up the resort website and plot out all of the slopes your group wants to try.

Seven Springs Mountain Resort

Address:  777 Water Wheel Dr, Champion, PA 15622 Distance from D.C.: About 4 hours

If you’re traveling with a group of coworkers or friends who want to skate, bowl, and party—not just ski—Seven Springs is perfect for you. Located in Pennsylvania’s Laurel Mountains, the resort includes a bowling alley, a roller-skating rink, a mini-golf course, and a pool in addition to its 33 ski trails. Seven Springs also draws snowboarders with 7 terrain parks and an Olympic-size halfpipe. But what really sets it apart is its nightlife.

The resort boasts three bars and lounges that have become beloved in skiing circles. The most popular is the Foggy Goggle, an iconic après-ski bar with signature cocktails and live music that calls itself the “Best Ski Bar on the East Coast.” If you’re looking for a nightclub with a busy dance floor that stays open super late, try the Matterhorn, also located on site. When the forecast calls for snow, we can’t think of a better way to spend the day than planning a trip to learn to ski. Beginner Slopes

Bryce resort.

About two hours from Washington, D.C., Bryce Resort in Bayse, VA is the perfect day-trip destination to teach the littles how to ski or to learn as an adult. Everything at Bryce is family-friendly, from their ski rental shop which opens directly to the Little Nip to the biergarten at the bottom of the mountain where mom and dad can take a load off in the Adirondack chairs while watching the littles take the magic carpet up the Bunny Hill and ski down. Intermediate Skiers

Wisp resort.

For those of us who really want to get our tykes outdoors, Wisp is the place to be. There are full and half-day programs for the little ones that include lift tickets, instruction and equipment (which let’s face it is half the battle). At about 180 miles from the District and near Deep Creek Lake Wisp offers more than just bunny slopes and black diamonds. Swoosh down hills in snow tubes, take to the ice on skates and explore snowshoeing or just sight see with a sleigh ride.

Blue Knob All Seasons Resort

Blue Knob is the highest skiable mountain with the most challenging slopes in PA. Clocking in at just three hours from Washington, DC, you may want to spend the night. The mountain boasts the longest and sweetest rides for skiers and snowboarders. Best Ski Resorts Near Washington, DC

The capital of the United States and a historic city, ski resorts may not be the first thing you think of when visiting Washington, D.C. Winter sports enthusiasts will be happy to know many options are available to them to hit the slopes . Ski resorts near the nation’s capital offer a variety of snow and outdoor sports as well as accommodation and amenities for the whole family. Here are a few of the top slopes and mountain peaks in the D.C. area.

Massanutten Resort

Under 3 hours outside of the Washington, D.C. area, you can find yourself in an actual mountain village, reminiscent of the Swiss Alps. At Massanutten Resort in Virginia, the grounds stretch on for over 6,000 acres. What makes Massanutten one-of-a-kind is its sheer size and an extensive list of activities and amenities. Aside from the snow sports of skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, and tubing, there is also an entire waterpark onsite. In warmer seasons you can hike, bike, play basketball, table tennis, tennis, volleyball, and more. While family-friendly, couples can also enjoy the cocktail lounge, club, and restaurants on-site too. Hot tubs, Jacuzzis, swimming pools and saunas are also available for necessary relaxation and rejuvenation.

Bryce Mountain Resort

Located within 2 hours of D.C., Bryce Mountain Resort outside of Basye, Virginia, is a great day trip destination. Although a bit smaller than some of the other resorts, Bryce Mountain is a year-round location for those with beginner to advanced skill sets. It’s renowned for its award-winning ski and snowboard school, so bring the kids out for some lessons on the slopes. The resort is also a popular destination for hiking, biking, tubing, zip-lining, boating, and even golfing. There are no on-site accommodations, but several hotels and lodges are nearby.

Liberty Mountain Resort

Liberty Mountain Resort in Fairfield, Pennsylvania , is a roughly 1.5-hour drive from D.C., and about 10 miles from historic Gettysburg. The resort sits on over 250 acres and is full of mountain views for you to enjoy while skiing, snowboarding, or snow tubing. The main lodge on-site features a spa and pools for recuperation from a day of intense activities. To feel further rejuvenated, ease your aching muscles and recover from any spills with a massage from the wellness spa. A wide range of personal care and treatments such as natural fruits body scrubs rich in antioxidants are also available. White Grass Touring Center

If cross-country skiing is your thing, then head to Tucker County, West Virginia, about 3 hours from D.C. Here you will find the White Grass Touring Center , which offers all levels of cross-country skiing. The center’s mostly flat terrain is perfect for learning or improving existing skills. 160 inches of powdery snow grace the more than 35 miles of trails every year. Feel good while cross country skiing. The ski area’s electricity usage is less than the average American home and don’t forget to check out the on-site natural foods store as well.

Roundtop Mountain Resort

Roundtop Mountain Resort is 114 miles from D.C. in Lewis Berry, Pennsylvania. The resort offers year-round excitement for all ages and skill-sets. Some of the featured activities include OGO balls, climbing, mazes, bumper boats, zip lines, paintballing, skiing, snowboarding, and snow tubing. The resort boasts nearly 600 acres of terrain to explore and has a 1,400-foot summit, a 600-foot vertical drop, eight lifts, and 20 runs. With an abundance of space and year-round activities, Roundtop has something for everyone.

Amazing Places To Ski Near DC With Kids

Skiing near DC with kids has never been so easy! Winter isn’t my favorite season, but years ago, I read an article that changed my perspective on how to ski with my children. As a result of these tips, I planned some activities to look forward to during the winter and we set off to discover the best skiing near DC with kids ! At first, our little ones needed lessons to become skilled enough to do greens. Now, our older two boys need advanced lessons because the ski instructors take them on harder trails than we’re willing to do! We’ve covered the best ski resorts close to Washington DC for kids and share our experiences here.

Liberty Mountain Resort

Fairfield, pa.

Liberty Mountain Resort in Pennsylvania is where my family went skiing near DC with kids for the first time. Located in Fairfield, this family-friendly East Coast ski resort is a great place to escape the city. They offer skiing and snowboarding for kids during the winter, as well as proximity to other outdoor attractions. I chose Liberty Mountain as a jumping-off point because it’s close to where I live. Not to mention, it’s one of the best ski resorts in Pennsylvania for families .

A lot of families also love how it’s nearby historic Gettysburg. When my family stayed, my oldest two were 6 and 4. While the older boys did a two-hour intro lesson, we hung out with our youngest, playing in the snow and watching the other skiers. They enjoyed their time on the bunny slope and it was a good intro to skiing near Washington DC !

Massanutten Resort

Massanutten, va.

We loved skiing in Virginia ! When the boys were 7 and 5, we spent a long weekend at Massanutten Resort , one of the best ski resorts in Virginia for families . This is definitely one of the best ski resorts near DC for kids . In fact, it features 6,000 acres of mountain fun! We picked Massanutten because it offers a ton of activities, including an indoor waterpark, mini-golf, and petting zoo.

Massanutten is also ideal for snow tubing near DC . My parents and my sister came with us to help watch our toddler daughter. We stayed in the Summit Townhomes and enjoyed it overall. The ski mountain is relatively small, however, it was fine for our beginner group. You’ll need a car to get around. My boys did well at the ski camp and learned a lot (including how to do lifts and green slopes!).

Seven Springs Mountain Resort

Somerset county, pa.

My family stopped at Seven Springs Mountain Resort in Pennsylvania for another adventure on the slopes. Conveniently located off the Pennsylvania Turnpike, this kid-friendly East Coast ski resort is popular all year round for its abundance of activities. When we visited, we chose Seven Springs because the area had received snow and the conditions were good. My husband and I sent our boys to Seven Springs ski camp (we skied while they were in camp).

At the time, it was the biggest ski resort we had ever visited, featuring over 33 slopes and trails. The conditions were good and we enjoyed our day! After skiing, we stopped for hot chocolate and hit the road to head home. Certainly, Seven Springs Mountain Resort offers some of the best skiing and snowboarding near DC with kids !

Farmington, PA

My family also spent a long weekend at Nemacolin in Pennsylvania, one of the best ski resorts near DC for kids . Located in Farmington, this upscale ski resort is set on 2,000 wooded acres in the Laurel Highlands. It’s a great destination for skiing near DC with kids! Additionally, Nemacolin is perfect for snow tubing near DC . Traveling with extended family, we selected a place with a variety of other activities for non-skiers. Here, we stayed in The Washington Townhome , but you can also find standard hotel options at Nemacolin too.

Nemacolin has a small skiing mountain, but it was fine for our beginner group. Aside from skiing, we also visited the indoor pool, snow tubing, and multiple on-site restaurants. My kids loved the Wildlife Adventures ! Certainly, this is one of the best Pennsylvania ski resorts for families !

Camelback Resort

Tannersville, pa.

My family chose Camelback Resort , one of the best Pennsylvania ski resorts for families , because they have an indoor waterpark, so we could do some fun activities with our daughter too (admission is included with your stay). All of my kids loved the indoor water park , making it our new favorite option! Since Camelback was a larger mountain with more slopes, we skied for several hours each day.

As a result of how much everyone enjoyed Camelback the year before, we planned a long weekend trip back the next year. My kids were 9, 7, and 4. My boys did a mix of ski school with SnowClub Kids, ski lessons, and skiing with us. Our 4-year-old daughter did a one-hour ski lesson on two days as well. Finally, you can also book a room on-site , which makes this a great option for families who want to stick close.

Snowshoe Mountain Resort

Snowshoe, wv.

As our kids grew older and became better skiers, we had a wider variety of ski options open to us, including places that don’t offer daycare. My family heard good things about reliable ski conditions at Snowshoe Mountain Resort in West Virginia. So when our kids were 10, 8, and 5, we checked it out for a long weekend. We stayed at Allegheny Springs , which is a ski-in/ski-out option . What a great location! Our 5-year-old daughter attended ski camp every day, as she is not quite ready to go down a longer green slope with me. My boys are still doing ski camp because the ski instructors are now taking them on more advanced slopes. Snowshoe is probably the largest East Coast mountain we have visited with the kids to date. No wonder it’s great for skiing near DC with kids! 

During our visit to Snowshoe Mountain Resort with kids, we skied on both the main mountain and the Silver Creek area. We enjoyed both. My family especially liked how quiet the Silver Creek area was during the day. Besides skiing, our hotel also offered a lot of activities to do in our downtime, including some of the best snow tubing near DC. We also went snow tubing and visited the Split Rock indoor/outdoor pool, and the Round Top kid’s play area. Plus, we enjoyed getting waffles at the Waffle Cabin every day! After our trip, we bought season ski passes to Snowshoe and hope to create more family memories on the slopes!

Whitetail Resort

Mercersburg, pa.

A resort we have not been to, but close to the Washington DC area, is Whitetail Resort – just 90 minutes from the city. Whether your family is after steeper slopes or more low-key runs, Whitetail offers dozens of trails and a half-pipe to make memories among the snow. Skiers looking for instruction can find it with private or small-group lessons of up to 6 participants.

And for some apres-ski, the restaurants onsite offer places to fuel up (reservations are currently required for many eateries and open a day in advance). Or if you’re not hitting the mountain, a snow tubing hill lets winter-loving families join in on the fun! Certainly, this is one of the best places to go skiing and snowboarding near DC with kids.

Wisp Resort

Mchenry, md.

Another family ski destination that would be new to us is Wisp Resort in Deep Creek, MD . Families can ski across 33 slopes and 11 miles of trails for cross-country and downhill skiing, snowboarding, and snowshoeing. Newbies and more seasoned snow enthusiasts alike can sign up for group lessons (ages 6 and up) or private lessons (ages 3 and up) settings, and rent gear at the resort. For private lessons especially, advanced sign-ups are recommended.

If families are looking for adventure off of skis and snowboards, there is snow tubing (children must be at least 4 years old and 42” to ride) and a mountain coaster (children must be a minimum age of 3 and 38” high to ride). With a location about three hours from DC, make it a multi-day trip and lodge in one of their family-friendly accommodations .

Successfully skiing and snowboarding near Washington DC with kids is all about strategic timing. On the East Coast, ski conditions can be challenging when planning a trip. However, most resorts make their own snow, so if you’re not too picky, it should be ok. When we visited Massanutten, we went on President’s Day weekend and workers there told me it was their most crowded weekend of the year. After that, I decided to work our long weekend ski trips around our school system’s teacher workday long weekends instead, to try to beat the crowds. We can’t wait to spend more time on the slopes at the best ski resorts near DC for kids !

Not only is skiing a great physical activity to help sharpen your skills, but it’s also fantastic for bonding as a family. No matter where you decide to spend your ski season with your kids, we know you’ll have an amazing time together!

Sure, the Southeast is not necessarily known for skiing. However, with the Appalachian Mountains running right through western North Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia, you can gain enough elevation for some decent turns. These southerly states are actually home to a few full-service ski resorts, complete with on-site lodging and luxurious spas. But, you can also visit the hills in mom-and-pop towns to experience true southern hospitality in a no-frills setting. What these little resorts lack in elevation, they surely make up for with snowmaking, terrain parks, and tubing. Winter destinations in the Blue Ridge Mountains , the Great Smoky Mountains , and the Allegheny Mountains offer something for everyone, and often at half the price of the world-class resorts out West.

Sugar Mountain, Banner Elk, North Carolina

Located 2 miles east of Banner Elk in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Sugar Mountain Resort (North Carolina's largest ski area) boasts 1,155 skiable acres and a vertical drop of 1,200 feet. This popular resort offers roughly 5 miles of skiing, snowboarding, and snow tubing areas, including 20 ski trails (15 of which are lighted for night skiing) and multiple tubing runs. There are four double chairlifts, including two of the longest in North Carolina, one triple chairlift, one T-bar, one handle tow, and two magic carpets. With just as many skiable acres as some resorts in New England, and various lodging and dining options nearby, Sugar Mountain is a must-go weekend trip for southern skiers.

Appalachian Ski Mountain

Appalachian Ski Mtn., Blowing Rock, North Carolina

Located in quaint Blowing Rock, North Carolina, in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Appalachian Ski Mtn. was the first ski area in northwestern North Carolina (then called Blowing Rock Ski Lodge). This family-oriented resort features 10 slopes accessed by two quad chairlifts, one double chairlift, one conveyor lift, and one handle pull lift. The longest run, Orchard Run, winds a half-mile down the mountain. Kids can test their skills on three terrain parks, serviced by three separate lifts, and the 6,000-square-foot outdoor ice skating rink and night skiing provide hours of fun for the whole family. Appalachian Ski Mtn. offers fun events like a Ladies Park Night and even hosts a USASA-sanctioned boardercross and skiercross competition.

Cataloochee Ski Area, Maggie Valley, North Carolina

Easily reached from I-40, Cataloochee Ski Area is located in the Great Smoky Mountains of North Carolina. Here, skiers and snowboarders can choose from 18 slopes and trails with a 44 percent beginner, 39 percent intermediate, and 17 percent advanced to expert mix. The five lifts include one double, a triple, a quad, and two moving carpet surface lifts. Cat Cage Terrain Park is filled with fun jumps, rails, ​and boxes for snowboarders and skiers alike. Nearby Tube World (also run by the resort) offers one-hour sessions on their groomed tubing hill serviced by a magic carpet service lift.

On The Snow

Beech Mountain Resort, Beech Mountain, North Carolina

At 5,506 feet above sea level, Beech Mountain Resort is the highest ski resort in eastern North America (a claim that surpasses all of Vermont's world-class resorts). This private development started hosting skiers in the mid-1960s and now includes 17 trails serviced by nine lifts, a terrain park, complete with rails, boxes, tubes, and a rope tow, and a 7,000-square-foot outdoor skating rink. A charming Alpine-style village sits at the mountain's base, complete with an on-site brewery, Beech Mountain Brewing Co. , as well as a two-story lodge, rental and souvenir shops, and an outdoor fire pit.

 Ski Southeast

Wolf Ridge Ski Resort, Mars Hill, North Carolina

Rounding out North Carolina's ski meccas is Wolf Ridge Ski Resort, located only 30 minutes from the college town of Asheville, North Carolina. Wolf Ridge Ski Resort offers skiers and riders 14 runs serviced by two quad chairlifts, two double chairlifts, and one surface lift. Boardwalk, a half-mile trail that is part of the Breakaway section of the mountain, winds through a ski tunnel and contains a terrain park that offers plenty of freestyle action. A free shuttle service transports you 1 mile down the mountain to the 350-foot-long tube park, complete with full snowmaking capabilities. Round out your stay by booking one of Wolf Mountain Reality's 25 cabins for a weekend family getaway.

 Bryce Resort

Bryce Resort, Basye, Virginia

Originally a summer retreat in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, Bryce Resort opened its ski slopes in the 1960s. Now, a popular all-season resort, Bryce delivers eight slopes served by two chairlifts, one surface lift, and two carpet lifts. Trails range from beginner to intermediate to advanced, and the tubing park features 800-foot long tubing lanes. At the base of the hill, check out the ice-skating rink, ski and snowboard shop, and the Copper Kettle Restaurant , featuring seasonal ingredients and live entertainment. In the summertime, Bryce Resort transforms itself into a downhill mountain biking enclave, complete with lessons and rentals, as well as a destination for golf, ziplining, and snowless summer tubing.

Massanutten offers all-season fun, complete with skiing, snowboarding, and snow tubing in the winter, and golfing, mountain biking, and an indoor water park come summer. Massanutten boasts 14 trails for all levels of skiers and riders and its terrain park contains elements for snowboarders, skiers, and snowbladers. The mini-park is perfect for kids wanting to learn park skills and progress at their own rate. The Massanutten Family Adventure Park features 16 lanes of winter and summer tubing, as well as a climbing wall, and zip-lining setup. Don't leave without testing your skills on the FlowRider Endless Wave. You may even skip skiing for a day to dial in your surfing.

Omni Homestead Resort, Hot Springs, Virginia

A premier all-season luxury resort, Omni Resort's Homestead offers something for skiers and snowboarders, too, with nine downhill ski runs and a snowboard park serviced by two lifts. Winter activities include ice skating on an Olympic-sized rink, mini snowmobiling for kids, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and tubing. The indoor and outdoor pools truly are the gems of this resort, with the Allegheny Springs pool, indoor pool, and Serenity Garden pool all spring-fed by mountain water. Modern lodging accommodations and eight dining options , including an on-site market, provide a luxury weekend getaway for families.

Wintergreen Resort, Wintergreen, Virginia

Wintergreen Resort is located adjacent to the Blue Ridge Parkway in picturesque central Virginia. This 11,000-acre all-season resort offers winter guests the unique advantage of being able to ski and play golf on the same day. With 26 trails, two snow tubing parks, a terrain park, and high-speed chairlifts, this sizeable southeastern resort boasts terrain for all levels of skiers and riders. Situated in the Monongahela National Forest in the southern portion of the tranquil Allegheny Mountains, Snowshoe Mountain, a four-season Intrawest destination resort, offers 57 trails, 14 lifts, and a range of activities including cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Intrawest also owns other ski resorts like Stratton Mountain, Steamboat Springs, and Winter Park, making it one of the only southeastern resorts with world-class amenities. Canaan Valley Resort and Conference Center, Davis, West Virginia

Canaan Valley Resort and Conference Center is technically considered a West Virginia State Park. This all-season resort sits atop a plateau and overlooks a valley in the picturesque Allegheny Mountains. With 37 trails, four lifts, lessons, and rentals, Canaan Valley provides offerings for all levels of skiing and riding. Other on-site winter activities include snow tubing, snowshoeing, ice skating, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. Five dining options deliver something for every type of palate and lodging options include lodge rooms and suites, cabins, cottages, and camping.

Timberline Mountain, Davis, West Virginia

Timberline Mountain, one of the few remaining family-owned resorts in the Southeast, offers 36 slopes and trails accessed by three chairlifts. With a vertical rise of 1,000 feet, Timberline boasts runs as long as 2 miles—some of the longest in the East.​ Timberline's two terrain parks vary in difficulty. Snow Squall Terrain Park offers beginner features, and Thunder Snow Terrain Park gives intermediate skiers and riders a taste of challenging sculpted jumps, technical rails, wall rides, and jibs. Skiing can be a terrific family activity in winter , as the apres-ski scene provides just as much fun as time spent on the slopes. Many resorts also offer alternative snow-related activities — such as tubing, ice skating, snowshoeing and even sleigh rides — so the whole family can enjoy the mountain experience.

The best ski resorts for families are usually the ones that offer on- and near-mountain lodging, ski schools with a variety of programs, beginner- and intermediate-friendly terrain and some quality non-ski activities.

Ski and snowboard lessons can fill up well in advance, so if ski school — or even on-mountain child care — is a must-have for your vacation, double-check the options to ensure they fit your ski vacation goals. Just note that you most likely won't be able to book ski school until the fall, at the earliest.

Once you decide on the best resort for your family, price out lift tickets and pass options ahead of time. You may be surprised at how much more affordable it is to buy ski passes in advance rather than purchase individual lift tickets — even if you are only skiing for a day or two. Buying ski passes earlier than later will ensure you get the best pricing; they will only get more expensive as the year goes on.

Some mountains also offer kids-ski-free programs , which can help keep the trip cost down. Additionally, many ski resorts have capacity limits, so you'll want to make sure you purchase your tickets before arriving (or make advance reservations at select mountains).

With all these nuances in mind, here are some of our favorite ski resorts for the whole family.

Beaver Creek Resort, Colorado

Why beaver creek is a good ski resort for families.

This may be surprising for those who are only familiar with the mountain's luxury reputation, but Colorado's Beaver Creek perhaps offers some of the friendliest slopes for family ski trips. About a two-hour drive from Denver International Airport (DEN) or 30 minutes from Eagle County Regional Airport (EGE) in Gypsum, this resort is relatively easy to reach, assuming you have good road conditions.

Beaver Creek has been upping its already solid family ski game even more lately, thanks in part to the relatively new, 250-acre, lift-served expansion called McCoy Park. This offers even more terrain for beginner and intermediate skiers and snowboarders; it also elevates the mountain experience with an additional 17 groomable trails, plus two more chairlifts.

Here, you'll also find the Beaver Creek Candy Cabin , which is a great addition to the Ice Cream Parlour at the top of the Haymeadow Express Gondola. At Red Buffalo Park's Cookie Cabin and at the bottom of the Centennial Express and Haymeadow Lift, you'll also be able to experience the mountain's famous 3 p.m. cookie time.

After a long day of skiing, you can enjoy ice skating in the village. On Thursday nights, kids and adults who are at least level four skiers can participate in a glow stick ski. For a unique experience, take an open-air, snowcat-led sleigh ride to Allie's Cabin , Zach's Cabin or Beano's Cabin — three different mountain-top dining options.

The mountain also ensures that teens are fully entertained. This past season, the new Hawk's Nest Cabin opened in Beaver Creek Village, where teens can enjoy the coolest underage club. There, those between the ages of 10 and 18 enjoy craft nonalcoholic beverages, music, interactive technology, arcade and table games, a ski simulator, lounge spots and more.

Lift tickets for Beaver Creek don't have to cost a ton if you plan in advance and lock in an Epic Pass of some sort.

Keystone Resort, Colorado

Out of all the great Colorado ski resorts (and there are plenty), Keystone is the hot spot for kids of all ages. There are the usual dog sledding, snow tubing, ice skating and sleigh ride activities, but the piece de resistance is the resort's kids programs and accommodations.

There are plenty of fun on-mountain experiences, such as snowcat skiing and night skiing (on weekends and holidays). Tykes should also like the famous Snow Fort. In fact, this past year, the mountain even had two snow forts to pick from: one up on Dercum Mountain and one in the Mountain House base area.

Additionally, the resort offers a ton of family conveniences, such as free preferred family parking for those with kids 12 and younger, as well as red wagons to help tow skis, boards or even tired kiddos.

This past season, Keystone added another 550 acres of diverse terrain among 16 new trails, bringing the total up to 3,500 acres. With so much terrain, your family can experience a wide range of trails, including the 3.5-mile-long Schoolmarm — a timeless run for the family to work on turns.

Best of all, kids 12 and younger ski free when staying at one of the resort's properties for two or more nights. (There are no blackout dates.)

Snowmass, Colorado

Why snowmass is a good ski resort for families.

Snowmass is one of the mountains in Colorado's swanky Aspen ski area, so you can check a high-end ski resort off your bucket list while entertaining the kids at the same time.

A bit less showy than its big sister Aspen, Snowmass notably includes the Treehouse Kids' Adventure Center, a licensed kids club for children between 8 weeks and 4 years old. Children at least 2.5 years old can also hit the slopes, as the mountain offers many ski school options.

On top of that, Snowmass allows kids to ski free all the way through age 6, which makes it a more affordable choice for a young family than most mountains; other areas typically start charging kids by the time they turn 4. For those 7 and up, know that the mountain participates in both the Ikon and Mountain Collective ski passes.

Other kid-friendly Snowmass activities include on-mountain snow tubing , alpine coasters , ice skating , snowshoeing tours and even an indoor climbing wall . During select dates throughout winter, Snowmass will offer a nighttime winter wonderland party called Ullr Nights filled with evening activities for families. This includes a gondola ride to Elk Camp, bonfires, tubing, alpine coaster rides, snow biking, s'mores and hot chocolate.

Copper Mountain, Colorado

If you are looking for a Colorado ski resort experience with lower prices than its neighbors, Copper is a great choice. This resort has family-friendly written all over it, and it offers an array of activities for all ages.

In addition to skiing in what are often prime snow conditions, you'll have the Rocky Mountain Coaster , plenty of snow tubing , ice skating on West Lake in Center Village and even daily complimentary ambassador ski tours .

Additionally, whenever there is a full moon, Copper Mountain will offer ambassador-guided Full Moon Snowshoe Tours in the evenings. For an off-mountain activity, the 19,400-square-foot Woodward Copper Barn serves as an indoor action sports facility, offering many unique activities at Copper Mountain.

For the past three years, Copper has also featured a Snow Maze , which we should see return for the 2024-2025 season as well. Near the base of the Super Bee lift in Copper's East Village, this maze is extremely fun for kids, as it's made entirely of snow.

This past season, visitors were able to experience the resort's brand-new mid-mountain lodge, Aerie. This 25,000-square-foot building offers more dining options and a beautiful 270-degree view. Best of all, the gondola unloads right at the lodge's deck.

Copper is also continuing to make improvements to its Western Territory Expansion. This area is on the far west side of the mountain and is designed to inspire beginner skiers, kids and families to connect with Copper's history and heritage. With new trails that have debuted over the past few years (including kid-friendly tree trails), guests will be able to experience 2,538 acres of skiable terrain.

Winter rates start at $161 per night. You can also use your Choice Privileges points to book a stay, though award pricing hasn't yet been set for the 2024-2025 season; however, this past winter cost 35,000 Choice Privileges points per night.

Deer Valley Resort, Utah

Why deer valley is a good ski resort for families.

When kids are getting their bearings and making big side-to-side turns on a slope, it can be easier to start on runs where you won't find any snowboarders.

At the ski-only Deer Valley Resort, there's a children's adventure area on the mountain with 14 pint-size trails allowing tots to practice new techniques. However, their favorite part will probably be the tiny cabin hidden in the woods. The mountain limits its ticket sales each day, which keeps crowds (and lift line waits) at a minimum.

If you are looking for a ski resort that can also entertain a non-skiing child, the Deer Valley Children's Center offers licensed full-day child care with many activities, as well as outdoor and indoor playgrounds. Children between 2 months and 12 years old can enjoy this facility.

Deer Valley has a fun approach to ski school that includes the Teen Escape for teens ages 13 to 17, the Adventure Club for kids ages 7 to 12, the Reindeer Club for 5- and 6-year-olds and the Bambi Club for 4-year-olds. For the younger kids, the class sizes are incredibly small, with just two to four kids in a class — depending on age.

Because Deer Valley participates in the Ikon Pass ski program, the more economical way to lock in lift tickets might be to opt for a pass instead of paying the window rates.

Northstar California Resort, California

Why northstar is a good ski resort for families.

California's Northstar Resort, along the California-Nevada border by Lake Tahoe, is excellent for families — especially due to the average 350 inches of annual snowfall. Here, families can ski together in the Kids Adventure Zone, where two mountain areas have blue trails safely tucked away from bigger, faster skiers and snowboarders.

Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, you can kick up your feet and unwind midday while enjoying a glass of apple cider (or a glass of bubbly for the adults) with the mountain's one-of-a-kind Tost tradition. Additionally, families can enjoy the apres-ski scene by cozying up around the fire pit or zipping around on ice skates while listening to live music. At other times, you can enjoy fireside s'mores and hot cocoa.

If cross-country skiing is your activity of choice, the Nordic Center offers nearly 22 miles of scenic trails for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and fat biking.

Smugglers' Notch Resort, Vermont

An uber kid-friendly ski resort, Smugglers' Notch focuses on the entire family experience. This is why it's known as "America's Family Resort."

Smuggs, as it's called by those who know and love it, offers an award-winning Snow Sport University. It starts lessons with little ones as young as 3 years old. Sir Henry's Learning and Fun Park has two "magic carpet rides" that gently guide new skiers to the top.

For those who already know how to ski and board, the mountain has everything they could want: 78 trails, eight lifts, the highest vertical drop in northern Vermont at 2,610 feet and more than 300 inches of natural snow each year. Multiple terrain parks and 1,000 acres for skiing and riding are also available.

For those staying at the resort, everything is a few steps away, and an on-demand shuttle will take you wherever you need to go.

Off the mountain, you'll also find a plethora of activities — both during the day and night. Activities include snowshoeing, tubing, cross-country skiing, swimming, ice skating, bingo and magic shows. You can also experience the updated Fun Zone 2.0 complex, which features a "Ninja Warrior" course, laser tag, miniature golf, an arcade, large inflatable slides and more spread across 26,000 square feet of indoor space.

Stowe, Vermont

Stowe has a world-class ski school and plenty of long, beautiful blue trails to keep your not-yet-expert skiers and snowboarders engaged. The relatively new Adventure Zone has continued to be a big hit; these low-angle, gladed areas are appropriate for anyone in the family looking for a fun experience skiing or boarding through the trees on Mount Mansfield.

After a great family day on the slopes, enjoy a free pre-dinner skate at the Spruce Peak outdoor ice rink , embark on a guided twilight snowshoe tour through the woods or enjoy indoor rock climbing at Stowe Rocks. If you're looking for a resort with a village atmosphere, this is one of the best you'll find in the Northeast.

The main issue with Stowe Mountain is its ticket prices compared to many other East Coast resorts. Luckily, the Epic Pass can save your family over the walk-up lift ticket rates. You could even look at Epic's Northeast Value Pass if you expect to only ski at East Coast mountains this winter.

Jay Peak, Vermont

Why jay peak is a good ski resort for families.

People love Jay Peak thanks to its indoor water park , which is ideal for families who want to take a day off from skiing or have something to do after morning ski school. The Jay Peak Pump House features slides, a FlowRider surf simulator and an entire kids play area. Many lodging packages include water park access, or you can purchase a daypass. (We recommend purchasing in advance.)

Aside from the water park, there are two arcades , a climbing gym , an ice skating rink and a slopeside movie theater . Not all activities are available every day, so double-check ahead of time. Aim to make advance bookings where available.

Best of all, there's a surplus of ski-in, ski-out condo and hotel options, giving families the perfect opportunity to stay in accommodations that work best for their needs. For those with little ones — or even big ones — Jay Peak offers child care for children as young as 6 weeks old both during the day and in the evenings.

Bretton Woods, New Hampshire

Why bretton woods is a good ski resort for families.

Just across the Vermont border is New Hampshire's answer to family-oriented skiing: Bretton Woods.

Home to the family-friendly Omni Mount Washington Resort , Bretton Woods features fat-tire snow biking trails, a 62-mile trail network for cross-country skiing, sleigh rides, snow tubing, canopy tours and an indoor-outdoor heated swimming pool (just for guests). The recently built Rosewood Lodge at the top of the mountain also gives skiers and riders that top-of-the-mountain lodge and luxury dining experience that you won't find at many other nearby mountains.

Unfortunately, unlike what you'll find at many other mountains, Bretton Woods only offers ski school on the weekends (Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and select holidays). If ski school is a must-have, just ensure the mountain has an option that fits your needs. However, we did find ski school was much more affordable here than those at many other resorts.

From the hotel's architecture to the incredible views of Mount Washington, it's no surprise that the resort is a top destination for families. With many fun activities for the entire family and more than 464 acres to ski , there should be no shortage of on-mountain family fun.

Where to stay at Bretton Woods

Mont-Tremblant Ski Resort, Quebec

Why mont-tremblant is a good ski resort for families.

In case you haven't found the perfect family ski resort for you this far into the list, we are cheating a little and including two near-to-the-U.S. family ski resort options in Canada.

At Mont-Tremblant, your family can experience the international skiing vibe without crossing the pond. This French-influenced getaway is just a couple of hours outside Montreal. Featuring 102 slopes and usually great snow conditions, Mont-Tremblant is one of the best ski experiences in North America, with the highest peak in the Laurentians region.

While older family members explore the high peaks of Mont-Tremblant, kids as young as 3 years old can enjoy practicing their turns at ski school . Or, if you happen to be visiting during spring break, Tremblant's Ski Week program will give you four full days with the same instructor.

Guests can explore a unique European-style pedestrian village directly at the mountain's base. The pedestrian village allows easy access from the front step of your hotel door to the bottom of the slopes. With its colorful buildings — including more than 75 shops, restaurants, bars and boutiques — there is plenty to do in any weather.

On a non-skiing day, grab the kids and hit the snow-covered trails ripe for fat biking, dune buggy rides, snowshoeing, ice fishing, sleigh rides and even ice climbing. Families will not want to miss the Brind'O Aquaclub water park, which offers four slides, indoor and outdoor hot tubs, 35 interactive water games and a revamped fitness room.
