Nissan Ariya

Race around the world, the first-ever drive from north to south pole is complete – and it was all-electric.

After nearly nine months on the road, an all-electric Nissan Ariya has become the first vehicle ever, gas or electric, to drive all the way from North to South pole, piloted by Chris Ramsey of  Plug in Adventures  and his wife Julie.

The Scottish couple, who previously became the first to complete the Mongol Rally in an EV , set off from the magnetic North Pole in March in a modified Nissan Ariya , built with the help of Arctic Trucks , an Icelandic company that specializes in preparing vehicles for the most difficult conditions on Earth. The idea was to use the Ariya as a proof-of-concept for future EV mods, and potentially to eventually replace the diesel vehicles currently used for Antarctic research and expeditions.

But it’s not actually all that far off from stock – the biggest change is 39-inch tires which required modified wheel arches. Other than that, the powertrain and suspension are mostly stock (just lifted), with no gearbox change as would have been necessary on a gas or diesel vehicle. Several gear solutions were added, along with tow hitches and some frame and underbody reinforcement.

Arctic Trucks called the mod the “AT39,” but over the course of the trip, the couple adopted a new name for their Ariya: “Sonrisa,” the Spanish word for smile.

Now, in December, the couple has finally reached the South Pole after nine months and 17,000 miles of travails along the way. Nine months may seem like a long time but it was actually the original plan, a schedule necessitated by polar weather and the changing seasons – and by climate change as well.

The beginning of the trip was actually a rush job, hurrying to get the car to the North Pole and back along polar ice roads which closed abruptly this year due to melting – something that has been happening earlier and earlier lately with rising global temperatures.

The first part of the trip was constrained by needing ice in the Northern hemisphere winter, in order to even drive on ice roads that are impassable after the ice melts. And the last part of the trip relies on arriving to the South Pole in the Antarctic “warm” season , as polar expeditions are not allowed during winter when the extreme conditions at the pole become even more impossible to handle.

The original plan had been to use a trailer with a small windmill to charge the car while parked while in polar regions, but the trailer didn’t work out on Arctic roads. But for the Antarctic portion, the Ramseys have been using solar panels to help charge the car at “night” (which can be any time of day – the polar region is in constant sunlight at this time of year), in addition to using generators when the weather isn’t in their favor, highlighting the ability of EVs to be fueled by several different energy sources instead of just one.

The trip through North America was relatively simple on big highways with plenty of chargers (and a quick stop to meet up with us, and the OC Tesla Club, in Long Beach ), except that the Ariya was significantly less efficient after modifications. Between the huge off-road tires, fenders, and roof rack with rooftop tent, range was cut significantly.

But these range losses are part of the message that the Ramseys want to send, anyway. If they can make it all the way from one end of the globe to the other with a 150-200 mile range (down from the 272-mile rating of the Ariya), this shows that most people  don’t “need” the huge range they claim they need .

After a brief trip around the uncrossable Darien Gap , it was on to a new continent. In South America there’s not nearly as much EV charging infrastructure (though Nissan dealers have provided plenty of juice ), so the couple encountered several difficult situations, including broken chargers and long stretches of unpaved road . But the trip offered an opportunity to improve the region in that respect, so Pole to Pole cooperated with Enel X to install chargers along the route.

The couple visited a hybrid wind/solar farm in Chile and had plenty of new cultural experiences for a couple of Scots from the opposite side of the world.

Then it was off to Antarctica, saving the most challenging part of the trip for last. The couple met up with their pals from Arctic Trucks , who had provided support for the Arctic portion of the journey, and are also supporting the Antarctic portion. Antarctic expeditions can’t be done solo, and Arctic Trucks wanted to see how their modifications would fare in the tough conditions.

We’ve all heard that cold weather is meant to be challenging for electric vehicles, but Sonrisa has been successful at navigating temperatures down to -30º or below. But it took a little inventiveness, turning the elements in their favor by building small walls of snow to keep arctic winds from freezing the battery overnight.

The couple has also used a collapsible tent specifically for the vehicle to keep it warm while parked, which helps with charging efficiency. They’ve even occasionally parked the car inside their camp tent to share accommodations for the night, if weather conditions made setup too difficult .

Getting closer to the 90º mark, the altitude in Antarctica gets higher and higher. The South Pole itself is at 9,300ft, or 2,835m, which means that in addition to the cold, the expedition has to deal with thinner air and less oxygen. Not only is this hard on the bodies of the humans on the expedition, but fossil-powered vehicles have a hard time starting up in these conditions – a problem that the all-electric Ariya has not had any difficulty with.

And now, they’ve finally reached the pole (after some last minute encouragement from legendary soccer coach and fellow Ariya owner Pep Guardiola ). The expedition actually reached the pole on Friday, but had to turn off their satellite communications when they approached the pole, so were only able to update the world about their successful finish today.

I absolutely loved this trip; it was perfect for me and my daughter. What you should know about us is that we are up for adventure and don't expect to be treated like royalty. This trip was an "excursion", not a "cruise", so do not sign up if you are expecting multiple restaurants, live entertainment, or other such luxuries. But, if you want to have the experience of a lifetime, explore the last great wilderness on the planet, and learn more about how you can help conserve that wilderness, this is a fantastic trip. The itinerary changes day by day depending on the weather, but you just might find an unexplored cove to explore/chart for future trips (we did!) or be the southernmost commercial ship on the planet (we were!). You might have a whale swim under your boat and then pop up its head to say hello, or a penguin momma show off her egg. And you might have 20 foot waves in the Drake Passage. Go in with the willingness to adapt and you will love it!

The trip was amazing and the pristine environment in Antarctica needs to be seen and felt to be appreciated. Quark provided a platform to conduct the the trip in a sustainable manner, impeccable procedures to preserve the environment and also good food to enjoy. Thoroughly enjoyable and unforgettable trip. One suggestion for Quark is to clearly advise future participants to cater 2-3 days leeway to allow for flights delay or cancellation due to the changeable weather conditions. There was a 2 days delay for my trip due to planes being unable to land in Antarctica due to accumulated snow on the runway. This caused a frantic rush to change flights and other travel arrangements for many participants aggravated by the limited internet access in Antarctica which could be avoidable or mitigated if the participants were advised of probable delays prior to the trip.

We can’t say enough good things about this tour, the ship and the crew. Our time on board was fantastic. Our captain had a great deal of experience and we felt completely safe at all times on the ship. The expedition team were knowledgable and friendly, and all the crew from the deck hands to the bridge went out of their way to be helpful and kind. Outside Amundsen-Scott Station, you’ll have plenty of time for photographs at the Ceremonial Pole, surrounded by the flags of the Antarctic Treaty signatory nations. A journey to the South Pole is a significant achievement for any world traveler and you’ll feel the power of this special place. Antarctic Logistics & Expeditions is proud to be the premier provider for South Pole flights.

The interior of Antarctica has a cold, dry, windy climate. Average mid-season temperatures at our base camp range from -12°F to 30°F (-24°C to -1°C ). On a sunny windless day it can feel quite warm but, when the wind blows, you will be glad of warm layers and a wind jacket. Temperatures can drop as low as -22°F (-30°C) in early November.

At the South Pole temperatures rarely climb above -13°F (-25°C) with light winds and windchill down to -40°F (-40°C). The physiological altitude (how high it feels) is roughly 11,000ft (3,300m).

Moderate trips offer adventure with a bit more challenge. They may include walking up to several miles/kilometres on uneven snow and ice; staying in remote field camps; extreme temperatures (–40°F / –40°C); activity at high altitudes (11,000ft / 3350m); or skydiving from 13,000 ft AGL (15,300 ft AMSL) .

Grease the pole! South Philly's Italian Market Festival is back

T he 2024 South 9th Street Italian Market Festival returns this weekend with lots of vendors and tons of family fun, but mostly lots of tasty food and one greased pole ready for climbing.

"The nation’s oldest outdoor continuous market hosts this annual family event, which is Philadelphia’s largest block party," according to the festival's website .

When and where does the South 9th Street Italian Market Festival take place ?

The festival takes over the South Philadelphia neighborhood on Saturday, May 18, and Sunday, May 19, from 11 a.m. to 5p.m. each day, stretching down South 9th Street from Fitzwater Wharton Streets and along Washington Avenue, Christian Street and other cross streets.

What can festivalgoers expect this weekend in South Philly?

"For seven city blocks, the 2024 Festival will be a celebration of culture, gastronomy, art and music," organizers say on their website . "Featuring over 100 area vendors showcasing a range of cuisine and beverages. Visitors will have the opportunity to sample and purchase culinary delights."

Go hungry, but also look to crave some culture and art.

"In addition to the food, the Festival will feature a wide range of music, services, souvenirs, jewelry, artists, and crafters," according to organizers.

The neighborhood is put on display through a series of events, including Saturday morning's John Marzano Half Bal Tournament , Sunday's Procession of Saints parade and Sunday's DeerPark’s Hoagie Competition with a $5,000 reward for charity on the line.

Something that rocks both days in live entertainment each day with music from DJs Timmy DeSimone and Eric Bartello, Slay Town City, the Juliano Brothers, Philly Heart & Soul and more.

But, the biggest draw it the greased pole challenger each day and you and some friends can try your best to conquer the 30-foot pole.

"Located at the 9th & Montrose Tavolo Zona Piazza, The Grease Pole 30 feet high, greased with lard, teams will compete both Festival Days for prizes of meats, cheeses, gift cards and money, hanging from the top of the pole," festival organizers say. "More importantly the winning team will have bragging rights for the entire year. Teams can register on-site day of the event."

Among a flurry of surreal images capturing the dazzling auroras is one taken by Benjamin Williamson of a lighthouse in Portland, Maine.

"It's one of the most incredible things I've ever seen, the awe and wonder," Williamson told CNN.

He said he used a long-exposure technique to snap the shot, but did not edit it.

Things could be about to ramp up

If you still haven't seen the aurora, hold on for another 30 minutes to an hour, according to CNN meteorologist Chad Myers.

The next wave of coronal mass ejections, or CMEs, which cause the aurora, is about to arrive, he said.

"Just wait a minute because things are going to start to ramp up here," he said, adding that the increase could arrive "anytime now." "When it comes, get outside, get ready, put your coat on."

For those who are too busy to witness the phenomenon tonight, Myers said the aurora is expected to last three nights.

Why does the aurora last for a weekend?

Generally, it takes just eight minutes for light to travel 93 million miles to the Earth from the sun, but astrophysicist Janna Levin said the energized particles causing the current wave of aurora travel a lot slower, causing the phenomenon to last for the weekend.

"Some of these mass ejections are trillions of kilograms," she said. "They're slower. So they're taking longer, but still hours, maybe tens of hours."

Down in Florida, waves of color swam through the sky.

Up north in New Jersey, a purple-ish haze could be seen in the sky.

Will solar storms get more intense and risky in the future?

The answer is probably not in the short term, according to astrophysicist Hakeem Oluseyi.

He said scientists study what is constantly happening on the surface of the sun and have found a pattern.

“Geological data shows us that in the past the sun was way more active than it is today. It has cycles where it goes very quiet ... and you have events that show that the solar activity was much, much greater,” he told CNN. “So there's no evidence that we're going to see those big maxima this cycle." 

But the astrophysicist also spoke of a caveat - the limitations of modern science.

“Even though it's predictable in the short term, we still don't quite understand what creates the magnetic fields in the sun,” he said, adding: “That's why NASA has so many satellites looking at the sun.”

A series of solar flares and coronal mass ejections from the sun are creating dazzling auroras across the globe .

The rare solar storm may also disrupt communications. The last time a solar storm of this magnitude reached Earth was in October 2003, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Space Weather Prediction Center.

The massive solar storm could present “a real danger,” especially with the modern world relying so much on electricity, according to Bill Nye the Science Guy , a science educator and engineer.

Scientists are warning an increase in solar flares and coronal mass ejections from the sun have the potential to disrupt communication on Earth into the weekend. Solar flares can affect communications and GPS almost immediately because they disrupt Earth’s ionosphere, or part of the upper atmosphere. Energetic particles released by the sun can also disrupt electronics on spacecraft and affect astronauts without proper protection within 20 minutes to several hours.

In comparison to tonight's event, Nye drew comparisons with another incident in 1859, known as the Carrington Event, when telegraph communications were severely affected.

“The other thing, everybody, that is a real danger to our technological society, different from 1859, is how much we depend on electricity and our electronics and so on,” Nye said. "None of us really in the developed world could go very long without electricity."

He noted that there are systems in place to minimize the impact, but “stuff might go wrong,” stressing that not all transformers are equipped to withstand such a solar event.

“It depends on the strength of the event and it depends on how much of our infrastructures are prepared for this the sort of thing,” he said.

Here's where clouds will block the view of the northern lights in the US

After an incredibly stormy week, most of the Lower 48 has clear skies to see the northern lights. But there are some areas where clouds and rainy weather are spoiling the view.

A deck of clouds is blocking the sky in the Northeast, from parts of Virginia into Maine, as an area of low pressure spins off the East Coast.

In the Midwest, the aurora will be hard to see through thick clouds in parts of Wisconsin, Michigan — including the Upper Peninsula — and Illinois.

A stripe of clouds is tracking across Texas, including Dallas-Forth Worth, and into Louisiana.

And in the Southwest, patchy clouds across the the Four Corners region could make the northern lights difficult to spot.

Aurora seen at least as far south as Georgia

Barely visible to the naked eye, the aurora can be seen in Atlanta in the 10 p.m. ET hour. 

It is easier to see through photographs using a long exposure. The photos below, taken by CNN's Eric Zerkel and Emily Smith, used 3- and 10-second exposures.

They drove from the Arctic to the South Pole — in an electric car

Scottish adventurers Chris and Julie Ramsey wanted to prove their electric SUV was as rugged and reliable as a conventional car. To do it, they decided to take it on a drive.

That drive started in March on the frozen waters of the Arctic Circle near the North Pole. It ended in December, about nine months and approximately 20,000 miles later, at the South Pole in Antarctica.

The Ramseys say the globe-trotting expedition is the first of its kind done in an electric vehicle, or a car of any kind. It took them through a carefully plotted route down North and South America that wound through frozen snowscapes, mountain roads and dense cities, where they hunted for charging stations along the way. The couple, who in January returned home to Aberdeen, Scotland, told The Washington Post they hoped their feat could inspire other adventurers and any consumers considering electric vehicles.

“We could have failed at any moment, for whatever reason, and you just don’t know if you’re going to make it,” Julie Ramsey said. “... It just proves that EVs can go the distance.”

The Ramseys have undertaken ambitious electrified expeditions before. In 2017, the couple completed the Mongol Rally, a grueling 10,000-mile drive from the United Kingdom to Siberia, in a Nissan Leaf. The next year, Chris Ramsey became a Guinness World Records holder for the longest distance covered on an electric bike in 12 hours after cruising for about 177 miles.

There weren’t many frontiers left for the couple to tackle — none that seemed feasible, anyway. Then Chris pitched the idea of a pole-to-pole traversal bookended by stretches of driving in the Arctic and Antarctica. The route would be longer and cover more hostile terrain than even the Mongol Rally’s marathon course.

“I had my doubts,” Julie said.

The Ramseys partnered with Arctic Trucks, a company that organizes Antarctic expeditions, to plan the polar expedition and modify a Nissan Ariya electric SUV for the journey. Engineers strengthened the SUV’s body and installed mammoth 39-inch tires that could handle the ice and snow of the Arctic. Chris, a coffee lover, also had an espresso machine installed inside. But the Ramseys left the SUV’s battery and powertrain untouched, they said, in hopes of proving their point about the electric vehicle’s capabilities.

The Ramseys chose to start their drive in March from the 1823 location of the magnetic North Pole, a position that has shifted farther north over the years — the current magnetic North Pole was deemed too far into the Arctic Ocean to safely drive to.

The course was already treacherous enough.

Temperatures plunged to under minus-50 degrees, and the terrain varied between slippery ice and hidden banks of snow. In between driving days, the Ramseys either slept inside their car or in a tent pitched on the ice. The remote location meant the Ramseys couldn’t eschew fossil fuels entirely — they recharged the vehicle using a gas-powered generator — but the vehicle’s battery and electronics held up.

“Pretty much every spare [part] we brought up for the car to take on the expedition in the polar regions, they’ve all come back,” Chris said.

Once the Ramseys reached the Canadian mainland, they only used recharging stations and outlets in homes volunteered by passersby. At times, they admitted, “range anxiety” crept in — Chris noted the modifications to the vehicle halved the Nissan’s roughly 300-mile advertised range. As they continued south through Calgary, Alberta, and Vancouver, B.C., before entering Washington state, the couple said they faced another challenge: unreliable charging stations. The Ramseys praised the size and coverage of the electric-vehicle charging network in the United States but said they often encountered stations across the country that weren’t working.

“It’s just one of those ironic things,” Chris said. “The network in the U.S. is good — it’s there, which is brilliant — it’s just the companies operating it need to get a lot better.”

The Ramseys crossed into Mexico from Texas and drove down the Pan-American Highway to Panama, where they took a ferry into Colombia to bypass the forested Darién Gap at the Panama-Colombia border. As the charging network for electric vehicles grew sparse in some regions, the driving once again became tense, Julie said. The Ramseys stopped to sightsee but spent much of their time on the road, nervously watching their speed and battery levels to avoid getting stuck.

“You couldn’t just put your foot down and just relax,” Julie said. “It consumed a lot of brain energy.”

The Ramseys also took it upon themselves to improve the reach of the charging network on the continent. Before the trip, the couple partnered with an energy company, Enel X, to arrange the installation of more than 20 electric-vehicle charging stations in countries including Chile, Peru, Ecuador and Colombia, where they spotted gaps in the coverage of existing stations, Chris said.

In November, the Ramseys reached the city of Punta Arenas, Chile, near the southernmost tip of the continent, and began preparations for the expedition’s final, riskiest leg. Entering Antarctica would require a flight, but after that, the Ramseys would have to make a roughly 700-mile drive from their base camp to the South Pole.

An Arctic Trucks support team rejoined the Ramseys for the drive in Antarctica to provide backup in case of an emergency. Sune Tamm, director of operations for the company, said he was impressed — and a little surprised — by the couple’s grit as they neared the frigid finish line.

“It’s, I think, exceptional to find a client that was so committed to the project,” Tamm said. “Chris would be sleeping in the car while it was charging. He was using every bit of his being to get this project across the line.”

In December, with snow crusted around the SUV and icicles dangling off its rear bumper, the Ramseys reached the South Pole, completing their globe-spanning journey.

“It was just a huge sense of relief,” Julie said.

The Ramseys returned to Scotland in January to celebrate and promote their expedition, which Arctic Trucks reported as the first in history to take a wheeled vehicle from the magnetic North Pole to the South Pole.

“They did something that no one ever dreamed you would do, even in a fossil fuel-powered vehicle,” Tamm said. “To have that first happen in an electric vehicle, my heart sang when I saw that come through.”

The Ramseys said they hoped their trip would serve as inspiration, but not a model, for prospective electric-vehicle buyers.

“We’ve had all the stress, and people can relax,” Chris said, laughing.
