SpiceJet Review [2024]: Low fares but are they trustworthy?

SpiceJet Review [2024]: Low fares but are they trustworthy?

SpiceJet is one of India's most popular budget airlines. But lower prices often come with a catch. So. is SpiceJet worth those tempting ticket prices? Explore this review to learn more!

spicejet travel

Are you hoping to explore India and hit all the major cities and sights by flying domestically? SpiceJet might just be your ticket to all that India has to offer!

SpiceJet is a popular Indian airline among locals and travelers alike. They also offer cheap tickets to many of India's biggest cities and some off-the-beaten-path destinations.

India has many domestic airlines to choose from, like Indigo,  Akas Air , Air India, Go Air, and Vistara, which all offer a wide range of destinations.

So how do you choose which airline is best for you? How reliable are they? You're about to find out if SpiceJet's budget tickets are worth it.

spicejet logo

What is SpiceJet?

SpiceJet  airlines is one of the two biggest budget airlines operating in India. The airline is based in Gurgaon, Haryana, a northern state in India, and serves over 8 million customers annually.

SpiceJet has been recognized as India's 3rd largest airline when measuring the total number of passengers annually. They aim to have the highest consumer value by providing honest and ethical service.

Where does SpiceJet Fly?

SpiceJet has 55 domestic and international destinations. Their international flights include:

Some of SpiceJet's domestic destinations are:

spicejet airlines

Who Owns SpiceJet?

SpiceJet is a publicly traded company owned by Ajay Singh, who bought the company in 2015.

They operate a fleet of 99 planes, including Boeing 737 and Bombardier Dash 8.

Is SpiceJet Safe?

SpiceJet had some mid-flight incidents in 2022, like a cracked windshield and a fuel leak. This is causing their customer base to be concerned. SpiceJet maintains that its planes are adequately inspected and safe for customers to travel.

Although they have some planes grounded recently due to inspection failure, SpiceJet is a relatively safe airline with a clean record.

SpiceJet Cancellation Policy

After purchasing a ticket with SpiceJet, you have 24 hours to change or cancel the ticket and get a full refund.

After the 24-hour window, there is a cancellation fee for international and domestic flights.

spicejet flight

SpiceJet Customer Service

SpiceJet doesn't have a great track record when it comes to quality customer service. Many travelers report being charged extra fees and having canceled payments charged to their credit card days later.

There are complaints of poor inflight service and food. And a customer care line that's difficult to use is bringing their service rating down.

Right now, SpiceJet has a rating of 1.4 on Trusted Pilot, with some of the better reviews mentioning issues with their flights.

The SpiceJet web check-in is simple to use, but if you need assistance, customer service is hard to contact and is reportedly rude and unhelpful.

SpiceJet Baggage Policy

This budget airline comes with typical extra fees for baggage. Only one carry-on bag is allowed on board, with a weight restriction of 7 kg.

You can add extra or overweight luggage when booking your ticket, which will cost about $11. If you arrive at the airport to find your bag is overweight, there is an added charge of $7 per kg on domestic flights. Any additional luggage pieces are $12 per item.

SpiceJet has some interesting rules regarding what can and cannot be in your cabin bag. Items like E-cigarettes and certain Macbook Pro laptops are entirely banned on cabin bags and checked-in bags.

If you have a Macbook Pro laptop with a 15-inch screen that was purchased between September 2015 and May 2017, then unfortunately it's a no-go!

The In-Flight Experience

Everyone's individual experience varies, but there are some things to expect when flying with a low-cost airline. Sneaky fees and hidden costs abound. So unless you carry small hand luggage, expect to pay a little extra.

Everything on SpiceJet costs extra and should be booked ahead of time when you buy your flights to avoid excess costs at the airport.

There are three price options for add-ons on your SpiceJet flight:

Spice Saver

This option is their cheapest, covering just the hand luggage and no add-ons.

The Spice Max option includes priority privileges such as extra legroom and a complimentary meal and drink.

This option allows you to change your ticket for free and includes a preferred seat choice, free meal, drink, and a free RT-PCR test if needed.

Add-ons like seat and meal combos, priority check-in, extra baggage, and insurance can all be purchased as extras regardless of your selected Spice option.

When purchasing the basic ticket, a budget airline's inflight experience is as expected. There's barely any legroom, uncomfortable seating, no inflight entertainment, and no meal service.

SpiceJet vs. Indigo

Indigo is another popular airline in India that also offers affordable tickets. Many customers report that their staff is friendly and helpful, the website is easy to use, and their flights are usually on time.

Indigo flights are significantly more expensive than SpiceJet, but their basic fare includes hand luggage and a checked-in bag, whereas SpiceJet does not.

Overall, SpiceJet is more affordable than Indigo, even when you factor in the extra baggage costs. But if it's service you're after, then Indigo offers a slightly better experience.

spicejet seating

Is SpiceJet a Good Airline?

SpiceJet is a safe and decent airline if you're backpacking in India and looking to get around on a budget.

It's always best to check recent reviews before booking with any airline. Traveling with SpiceJet will be a good option if you don't mind a no-frills travel experience.

SpiceJet has a rating of 3.5/5 on Trip Advisor, but its ratings on other sites are much lower.

Foreigners Traveling in India

It's good to note that foreigners will have difficulties purchasing local flights online in India with a foreign credit card. It's best to plan and book all your local flights with the same credit card before you leave your home country.

It's also important that you travel in India with the same credit card, as you will be asked to show the credit card before boarding or to provide the details on the front and back of the card.

Is SpiceJet Worth it?

What SpiceJet lacks in extras, it makes up for with significantly lower ticket prices! SpiceJet is worth it if you don't mind a slightly uncomfortable flight or if you aren't traveling a long distance.

If you're looking for a little bit more comfort or are traveling internationally from India, it may be worth rethinking SpiceJet. In that case, you'd be better off overlooking the higher prices and looking into some of India's other airlines like Indigo, Vistara, or Air India.

Foreigners in India can easily afford a slightly higher ticket while still traveling on a budget , so it would be worth it to weigh out other options.

Traveling in India can be a bit hectic without the added difficulty of flight/ticket issues. It's best to take the easier route when booking local flights, especially during busy periods such as  Diwali .

Our Rating: 2.3/5

  • Cheap tickets
  • Many local and international destinations
  • Safe flights
  • Difficult customer service
  • Extra charges for everything
  • Uncomfortable seats

This UK-based budget airline is one of the world's top five

Whether it’s a narrow seats , no leg room, or extra fees for hand luggage , we love to moan about low-cost airlines.

But, while we might spend a few hours feeling like the proverbial sardine, you can get to Spain for less than your family’s weekly shop – a worthy sacrifice.

As Ryanair once sassily posted on social media alongside a picture of a smirking Ryanair jet: ‘No matter how much they complain, they will always fly with you.’

Good point.

So, if you want to make your budget trip as comfortable as possible, you’re in luck.

A new ranking has revealed the top 25 low-cost airlines for 2024 – and four favourites amongst British passengers make the cut.

Top 25 low-cost airlines for 2024

  • AirAsia Group
  • Air Canada Rouge
  • Cebu Pacific
  • Jetstar Group

Source: Airlineratings.com

The highest ranking UK airline is easyJet , which placed at number five. Believe it or not, easyJet has been flying passengers since November 1995, and became a household name after it’s founder Stelios Haji-Ioannou, appeared on the BBC TV series, Airline.

Despite it’s high position, 80% of reviews on Trust Pilot for Easyjet are just one star, with scathing remarks such as ‘shambolic’ and ‘a sack of sh*t airline’,

However, the airline carried just under 83 million passengers last year – so it must be doing something right.

Are you guilty of this 'evil' airline habit?

An American flight attendant who goes by Cher on TikTok has revealed what she believes is the single worst thing a passenger can do on an airplane.

‘Putting any type of bottle that has liquid in it in the overhead bin,’ Cher declares, in a video which has been viewed more than 73,000 times.

‘Every single time, without fail, that water bottle, as soon as we take off, is going to leak inside the bin.

Cher, who has been cabin crew for five years, hates this so much, that she described it as ‘heinous, evil and diabolical.’

While she admits it’s an easy mistake to make, saying, ‘it’s tempting to do this if it’s in the outer pocket of your backpack,’ she’s adamant it’s poor plane behaviour.

So why is it so awful? ‘Not only does that soak everybody else’s bags, the water always picks one person and it’ll follow a stream and completely dump out of the bin onto one person,’ explains Cher.

And she’s not wrong that bottles will most likely leak. As an airplane climbs higher into the sky,  the air pressure drops  and it causes the air inside the cabin to expand. This means any air trapped in water bottles will also expand, which can force the water to leak out of it.

Next up in the list was Jet2 at number 11, followed by Ryanair at 16 (an Irish airline, but a close neighbour and favourite among Brits). Finally, WizzAir (based in Hungary, but again, popular among UK passengers) just scraped into the list at 25.

The ranking, compiled by, AirlineRatings , used 12 criteria to determine their winners. These included passenger reviews, fleet age, product offering and safety and incident ratings.

Overall, it was AirAsia, the Malaysian low cost airline, that was crowned the winner. Air Baltic, the flag carrier of Latvia, came in second, followed by Air Canada Rouge, a subsidiary of Air Canada, who off the top three.

There were a few on the list we hadn’t heard of, including the sweet-sounding Peach (a low-cost Japanese airline) and Spicejet, the fourth largest airline in India.

Indian Travelers Looking at Airlines, Hotels to Boost Sustainability – India Report

Bulbul Dhawan , Skift

May 28th, 2024 at 11:00 PM EDT

Indians are being more mindful of the impact of their journeys on the environment – and it is changing the way they live their everyday lives, according to a report from Booking.com. We look at some of the steps the government and industry are taking in response.

Bulbul Dhawan

The Skift India Newsletter is your go-to platform for all news related to travel, tourism, airlines, and hospitality in India.

Indian travelers believe that airlines and hotels have the most potential to counter environmental impacts of tourism, followed by travelers themselves and major sites and apps, according to a report by Booking.com.

The report added that travelers adopting more mindful travel choices believe that sustainable travel adds value to their trips.

“Today for Indian travelers, sustainable practices not only enhance their travel experience but also inspire them to adopt similar habits in their daily lives. There is a desire to have a positive impact, with travelers more forthcoming in exploring activities that are driven by sustainability,” said Santosh Kumar, country manager for India, Sri Lanka, Maldives, and Indonesia at Booking.com.

As India is actively promoting tourism to various destinations, including lesser explored ones, there is also a push towards sustainability from all stakeholders. Despite this push, the efforts have a long way to go.

  • Green tourism strategies: The Indian ministry of tourism has developed a national strategy for sustainable tourism to “ensure more resilient, inclusive, carbon-neutral and resource-efficient tourism while safeguarding natural and cultural resources.” Meanwhile, Goa state tourism has launched a regenerative tourism campaign to nullify the negative impact of tourism and make net-positive impact on the environment and local communities. Kerala also has a responsible tourism mission which aims to make tourism a tool for the development of village and local communities, eradicating poverty and giving emphasis to women empowerment. There is also a push towards ecotourism and rural tourism.
  • Efforts from airlines: SpiceJet, IndiGo, and Vistara have been exploring sustainable aviation fuel blends to reduce carbon emissions. They are also reducing single-use plastic on all flights. Air India has introduced TaxiBot, a semi-robotic equipment that acts as an extension of an aircraft’s nose landing gear. It tows the aircraft from the airport terminal gate to the taxi-out point and vice versa without using the aircraft’s engines.
  • Responsible practices in hotels: There is a boost in eco-friendly accommodations and hotel chains in India such as The Fern Hotels and Resorts and CGH Earth that focus primarily on the environment. Major hotel chains have so far minimized single-use amenities in rooms and established bottling plants in the premises itself to reduce dependence on plastic bottles. Hotels are also looking to procure from local vendors in order to support local communities.

Hilton Signs Flagship Brand in Gurugram

Hilton has signed its flagship Hilton Hotels and Resorts brand in Gurugram near Delhi. The company is developing the new-build 223-key hotel Hilton Gurugram Baani City Center with the Baani Group, and the hotel is set to open later this year.

This marks the expansion of the hotel chain’s partnership with the Baani Group, which owns the DoubleTree by Hilton Gurgaon Baani Square.

“Hilton is making strides to expand its presence in key gateway cities across the country,” Hilton’s senior vice president and India country head Zubin Saxena said.

The hotel chain currently has 26 operational hotels in India and more than 20 in its development pipeline. The company is set to double its footprint in the country over the next 3 to 4 years.

In an earlier interview with Skift , Saxena said, “Between this year and the next, we will be opening a hotel every two to three months.” Hilton is currently present in 15 Indian markets and is looking to expand into about 75.

ITC Hotels Opens Mementos Jaipur

ITC Hotels has announced the opening of Mementos by ITC Hotels, Jaipur. The property, which features 64 suites and villas in the first phase of opening, is the second to open under the Mementos brand in India.

With this, ITC Hotels has 14 operational properties in the state of Rajasthan, including Mementos Udaipur.

At the opening, ITC Hotels CEO Anil Chadha said that the company is on an impressive growth trajectory. It has a target of expanding its current portfolio of 130 properties to 200 hotels over the next five years.

Akasa Air Commences Operations From Prayagraj

Budget airline Akasa Air has commenced operations from Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh. Post the inaugural flight from the city on Saturday, the airline is operating daily direct flights between Prayagraj and Mumbai.

With this, Prayagraj has become the fourth city in Uttar Pradesh where the airline has commenced operations. It is also set to commence flights from Gorakhpur as the fifth destination in the state by the end of this month.

Akasa Air has been expanding its network rapidly, both domestically and internationally. While it has 22 cities in its network in India, the airline is operating flights to Doha in Qatar and is set to begin operations in Jeddah from July this year .

IHG Signs Holiday Inn Hotel in Prayagraj

IHG Hotels and Resorts has signed Holiday Inn Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh. The 95-key hotel is scheduled to open in 2025.

Sudeep Jain, South West Asia managing director for IHG Hotels, said that the signing is in line with the company’s strategy to expand in the secondary markets in India.

In 2024 so far, the company has expanded its portfolio in India with new signings and openings in Jim Corbett, Dehradun, and Guwahati. The company is looking to double its presence in the country in the next five years, having 50 hotels in its current pipeline. For its growth, the company is targeting high-growth secondary markets like Amritsar, Lucknow, Zirakpur, Kasauli, and Katra.

Rostov-On-Don city is a port and the administrative center of Southern Federal District of Russia. It lies to the southeast of the East European Plain, on the Don River. The city stands on the banks of the Don River, about 46 kilometres east of the Azov Sea and 1,070 kilometres south of Moscow. The climate is temperate continental. Rostov-on-Don has a specific unique outlook because of its rich historical and cultural heritage.

There are more than 1,000 objects of cultural heritage in the city, among them 482 architectural monuments, 70 archaeological monuments, eight large memorial complexes and 106 monuments. It is a major transport hub of the southern part of European Russia and a large educational and scientific center of Russia. So take a look at the city’s major points of interest. Our tips will make your trip to Rostov-On-Don unforgettable and full of interesting activities. https://www.instagram.com/p/BXex-Lzh8uV/?taken-at=213270263 Pushkin Street Take a look at this landscaped boulevard, lined with thousands of trees, flowers, restaurants, food kiosks, benches, memorials and statues. Pushkin Street leads into both the City Park and October Revolution Park. The biggest street of the city is always crowded and you can find a lot of activities there as a tourist. Undoubtedly the first place to go upon arrival, especially if you’re hungry. https://www.instagram.com/p/BYVR7KrHPyl/?tagged=%D1%80%D0%B5%D0%BA%D0%B0%D0%B4%D0%BE%D0%BD Don River Lookout Right after a visit to Pushkin Street, move to Don River lookout (aka, the Embankment) where you’ll enjoy a stroll along the riverside. The Embankment is lined with several restaurants, statues, fountains and a few souvenir shops; it also has an outstanding picturesque view. Yet it is considered to be the centre of Rostov’s nightlife. https://www.instagram.com/p/BYQtspxHtsu/?taken-at=1092801284125416 Rostov Zoo If you’re in travelling with children, then this zoo is well worth a visit. One of the largest zoos in Russia, it is home to a huge variety of animals, including giraffes, camels, polar bears, falcons, reptiles, fish and tigers. Located right in the city centre. https://www.instagram.com/p/BYQDpiIAGEU/?taken-at=879146942 Maxim Gorky Academic Drama Theatre. This theatre is a famous venue for dramatic plays, comedies and concerts in the Rostov area. It is located on the eastern end of Bolshaya Sadovaya Street (Teatralnaya Square 1), directly across the street from the monument known as ‘Stella’. Maxim Gorky Theatre operates even in summer when all other venues are closed. https://www.instagram.com/p/BNCnw_DA4Lo/?tagged=%D1%80%D0%BE%D1%81%D1%82%D0%BE%D0%B2%D1%80%D1%8B%D0%BD%D0%BE%D0%BA Central Market This massive outdoor and indoor market, which consists of many tiny shops and kiosks, can be both exciting and intimidating for tourists. Market shopping is one of the most memorable experiences that Russia has to offer for an adventurous tourist who just arrived here. You can buy anything here. The market is located in the downtown area, on Stanislavskovo Street, just four blocks south of the central intersection of Bolshaya Sadovaya Street. https://www.instagram.com/p/BYXMs9Xjcsk/?tagged=%D1%80%D0%B5%D0%BA%D0%B0%D0%B4%D0%BE%D0%BD Bridges Over the Don River & Embankment This city network of bridges and overpasses was constructed between 2007 and 2010, and it consists of a steel and a concrete composite structures across the River Don. Claims of KAL Airways, Kalanithi on damages legally untenable: SpiceJet

In an escalation of the ongoing dispute, SpiceJet on Tuesday said the claims made by KAL Airways and Kalanithi Maran for more than Rs 1,323 crore in damages are baseless and legally untenable.

On Monday, KAL Airways and Kalanithi Maran said they will seek more than Rs 1,323 core in damages from SpiceJet and its chief Ajay Singh as well as challenge the recent Delhi High Court order in the ongoing dispute between the two sides.

In a regulatory filing, SpiceJet said it strongly refutes the claims made by KAL Airways and Maran regarding seeking damages of Rs 1,323 crore.

“These assertions are not only legally untenable but also a regurgitation of previously rejected claims by the arbitral tribunal and then the Delhi High Court,” the airline said in the filing on Tuesday.

According to the carrier, KAL Airways and Maran initially sought damages of more than Rs 1,300 crore during the arbitration proceedings.

“This claim was thoroughly examined and subsequently rejected by a panel of three retired Supreme Court judges. Following this, KAL Airways and Kalanithi Maran appealed to the single-judge bench of the Delhi High Court, seeking the same amount in damages, which was again rejected by the court,” it said.

SpiceJet also said the two parties chose not to pursue any appeal before the appellate jurisdiction and consequently, the matter attained finality.

On May 17, a division bench of the court set aside a single judge bench order that had upheld an arbitral award asking SpiceJet and its promoter Ajay Singh to refund Rs 579 crore plus interest to Maran.

The bench allowed the appeals filed by Singh and SpiceJet challenging the single judge’s order, passed on July 31, 2023 and remanded the matter back to the court concerned to consider the petitions challenging the arbitral award afresh.

Against this backdrop, Maran and his firm KAL Airways decided to challenge the ruling after consultation with their legal counsel.

The decree holders — KAL Airways and Maran —”believe that the aforesaid judgement is deeply flawed and warrants further scrutiny”.

“In parallel, they are also seeking damages in excess of Rs 1,323 crore, as determined by FTI Consulting LLP, United Kingdom, a globally renowned firm that specialises in the estimation of losses arising out of breach of contractual commitments,” KAL Airways said in a statement on Monday.

Meanwhile, SpiceJet on Tuesday also said that following the court ruling, it will now pursue a refund of Rs 450 crore.

The case dates back to early 2015, when Singh, who owned the airline earlier, bought it back from Maran after it was grounded for months due to resource crunch.

As part of the agreement, Maran and KAL Airways had claimed to have paid SpiceJet Rs 679 crore for issuing warrants and preference shares.

However, Maran approached the Delhi High Court in 2017, alleging SpiceJet had not issued convertible warrants and preference shares nor returned the money.

On Tuesday, shares of SpiceJet declined 1.68 per cent to Rs 57.29 apiece in afternoon trade on the BSE.
