For those who drink, an unmissable part of visiting Belgium is the chance to explore its beer culture . Aside from drinking copious amounts of different beers, another way is to go on a tour of one of the country’s breweries. While I had several different choices of breweries to visit, I decided to pick one of Belgium’s most prolific beers, Stella Artois .

There were plenty of things I was keen to see when visiting Leuven , but the Stella Artois Brewery was near the top. After all, Stella is one of the most internationally recognizable Belgian beers. What resulted was an especially informative and engaging brewery tour through a cultural landmark of the city of Leuven .

Leuven’s Beer History

De Lantaarn Cafe, Brewery Tour

It’s fair to say that beer has had a major role in the history of Leuven. The city’s brewing legacy extends back far before Stella Artois, with evidence of breweries existing as early as 1366. Leuven owes its tradition of beer in part to its prosperous university and strong academic culture, like many cities with historic ties to brewing. Rather than associating this link with an academic understanding of the brewing process, most people tend to simply connect students and drinking!

The importance of Leuven’s brewing industry didn’t have an impact on just the city’s growth, but also it’s very landscape. Like in many Belgian cities , the Vaart canal was built to link Leuven with the neighbouring city of Mechelen. Since the building of the Vaart, the surrounding Vaartkom area has had strong ties with the city’s brewing culture.

Artois Leuven

One historical building of the Vaart that still has a place in modern Leuven is the De Lantaarn Cafe . The cafe arose as part of the boom around the Vaartkom in the 18th century, and after World War II became synonymous with the Stella Artois brand.

History of Stella Artois

Stella Artois Brewery Leuven

Even though the name “Stella Artois” is globally well-known, it’s only been used for the last century of the this centuries old history. The origins of Stella Artois actually begin just along the Vaart from the modern Stella Artois brewery at the Brewery Den Hoorn . Established by 1366, Brewery Den Hoorn became a major Leuven institution, gradually becoming the biggest business in the city.

It wasn’t until 1708 that the Artois name came into play, when  Sebastien Artois became the brewery’s master brewer. He would actually buy the brewery in 1717, renaming it the Artois Brewery . The next big change to the brewery didn’t happen until 1928 and with it “Stella Artois”.

For the festive season, a special Christmas beer was brewed and given the name “Stella”. The success and the popularity of the seasonal beer was so immense that it soon became available year round and led to this name change. The original horn symbol can still be spotted as part of the Stella Artois emblem.

The Stella Brewery Tour

Stella Artois Leuven

After walking up to the Stella Artois Brewery, I arrived at the visitor centre and was given a high-visibility vest and ushered upstairs. Once we’d been given an introduction and safety briefing, we were on our way and started the tour.

We were led into the brewery grounds proper and into a small theatre. It was here that we would learn about the history of Stella Artois and the brewing process. It was quite interesting to learn the role each of the ingredients played in the composition of the beer. This is despite the fact that this was not my first brewery tour, having visited the Pilsener Urquell Brewery in Pilsen, Czechia.

For those that don’t know the process of how beer is brewed, I’ll try to give you a brief overview. The four essential ingredients of beer are water, barley, hops and yeast, however Stella also interestingly adds maize. It is the origin of the water, barley, maize and hops, and the strain of yeast, that give each type of beer its unique taste.

Brewery Tour

The brewing process starts with the “ malting ” the barley, by heating, drying and cracking it. After that is the “ mashing ” stage, where the malted barley is soaked in hot water to release its sugars. The mash is then drained, leaving behind a sugary liquid known as “ mort “.

Next, the mort is boiled while the hops are gradually added, balancing out the sweet flavour of the mort. All of this is done in rows of immense, shiny kettles. The last step in the brewing process is fermentation, caused by adding the yeast to the strained and cooled mort.

While Stella Artois is brewed in other countries for the international markets, if you drink Stella in Europe, it was likely brewed here in Leuven. We were able to see the kettles, before moving on to the bottling plant. From a viewing platform above, you can look down into the automated bottling machines and watch the process take place. While Stella is brewed here, mostly other brands are actually bottled on site, including Leffe .

Bottling Machine, Brewery Tour

The end of the tour rightly finishes with the opportunity to do some tasting of freshly and meticulously poured Stella Artois on tap. There is actually a 9 step process required to ensure the perfect pour. They allow plenty of time for you to enjoy a drink or two, as well as take a look at the gift shop. Before returning to the visitors centre, they kindly handed out gift bags to everyone, including several drinks for you to try.

Tours of the Stella Artois Brewery are run Saturdays and Sundays at 3pm and last a bit under 2 hours. Entry costs 8.5€ (as of 2017), with information here . Note: the entrance is by the large car park and you should allow more time than you think to get there. I was one of many who were struggling to find the entrance as the clock ticked down to 3pm.

You can get to Leuven and the Stella Artois Brewery from other Belgian cities like Brussels by train . The brewery is roughly a 20 minute walk from Leuven’s train station.

Beer museums, breweries and a hop farm in Belgium

stella tour brussels

“You can spend years drinking something different every night in Belgium,” says Patrick Nijs, a self-described beer enthusiast who's volunteering with PALM Breweries during its annual hop-picking festival, the Hoppluk, held on August 27. “You never have to drink the same thing twice.”

The sheer number of Belgian beers — near always excellent and with ancient, storied traditions — is staggering. So while food lovers may flock to the country for chocolate and waffles or mussels and frites, as Nijs states, a sudsy pilgrimage to Brussels and beyond offers unmatched diversity sure to please any beer lover.

The hop-picking event is held at the PALM Brewery in Steenhuffel, Belgium, a short ride outside of Brussels. The hops grown onsite are used in the Palm Hop Select beer, an easy-drinking IPA, and the PALM Hop Select Limited Edition Green Hopping, which is brewed just for the festival. Volunteers are invited back to the brewery in December to drink the efforts of their labors at a release party.

PALM is one of several big-name breweries easily accessible if Brussels is your starting point on a beercation. Other options nearby include the Stella Artois brewery in Leuven, which is a quick train ride, and Hoegaarden, an easy ride away in its eponymous village.

“Brewing tradition here goes back to the 15th century,” explains AB InBev brewery visits manager Tom Robberechts while strolling through the Hoegaarden brewery, which has always resided in this quaint village.

Whether it's these internationally known breweries which lure you to the country, the ancient monasteries producing Trappist beers, or the emerging craft beer segment — yes, there are young, upstart breweries in Brussels, too. Check out Brussels Beer Project for starters — you'll drink well on the journey.

To visit PALM in Steenhuffel, take the 251 bus route from Brussels, which arrives right in front of the brewery. Sample the full lineup in the tasting room, where beers from sister brewery Rodenbach, 30 minutes south of Bruges, are also available. The Stella Artois brewery is open to the public, but not for walk-ins. Schedule in advance through the brewery or contact the Leuven tourism center for a weekend visit. Frequent trains from Brussels take 20 to 25 minutes to arrive in Leuven. Visits to Hoegaarden must be arranged privately and require additional transportation from Leuven to the village.

91A chaussée de charleroi, 1060 Saint-Gilles instagram – 0456 70 51 98 every day from 7am to 6pm

Welcome to Stella. The place is small. A wall covered with Polaroid portraits of dogs, a counter filled with pastries, a few seats on the benches, and a handful of tables and chairs in green metal on the sidewalk for sunny days. Here, presumably, one either comes to soak up the sun, if lucky, or grab their coffee to go.

Discovered during a coffee tour, my first experience was not of a coffee, but of a rose water latte. And it has remained my favorite ever since. A latte made with oat milk and rose water – which, surprisingly, is miles away from the artificial side one might imagine. It’s light, it’s soft – comfort in a cardboard coffee cup. It has become my go-to on dreary, gray days, and beyond.

Stella, that’s the name of Bassel’s dog, the owner who arrived from Syria at 18. Six months later, he managed to have Stella join him in Belgium, safe and sound.

Stella, it’s a story that moves us, but above all, it’s an excellent specialty coffee, egg buns, and insane pastries, and a rose water latte – which, I can’t say it enough, has become my ultimate comforting drink.

This is student life at TU/e

Stella terra and ggo visit dutch embassy in brussels.

Solar Team Eindhoven visited the residence of the Dutch ambassador in Brussels yesterday. Naturally, the Stella Terra - the world’s first off-road solar car - was brought along for the trip. To demonstrate, inspire and, of course, explore the streets of Brussels.

“We set up this event ourselves in cooperation with TU/e and the Dutch embassy,” says Bob van Ginkel, Technical Manager & PR at Solar Team Eindhoven . “With it, we hope to show the European Parliament all the possibilities and inspire them.”

By “all the possibilities”, Van Ginkel is referring to Stella Terra , Solar Team Eindhoven’s self-built off-road solar car. It is fully self-sufficient and the first of its kind capable of taking on adventures on both paved and unpaved roads. Yesterday, Solar Team Eindhoven made a special visit to the Dutch embassy in Brussels to show off their creation. “It’s very important that we, as an innovative student team at the forefront of the field, also engage and inspire policy makers at the European Parliament so that it will truly bring about change,” Van Ginkel explains.

This is not the first time that Solar Team Eindhoven has showcased a one of its creations here. “Two years ago, our camper Stella Vita also visited the residence,” Van Ginkel explains. “However, that event had a different focus, because there were other parties involved as well. This time, the event revolved entirely around Stella Terra.”

stella tour brussels

Not all about technology

In addition to Solar Team Eindhoven, the GO Green Office (GGO) was also present in Brussels to present their story. “At GGO, we see that the technofix is not the solution to everything; we also need societal change,” stressed Elano Franken, Strategic Manager at GGO. “That means we all have a really deep understanding of why sustainability is needed, why we need to change our own behavior.”

As sustainability ambassadors, the members of GGO are constantly working to spur this change within TU/e. Yesterday they talked about one of the ways they are trying to do this: with the Chair of the Future . A symbol to always keep one chair empty during every meeting. This chair represents the future and serves as a reminder to take sustainability into consideration when making decisions. “With the Chair of the Future, we’re now working with deans of different departments to map the current status of sustainability for each department, and then compare that to what we think should be the target,” Franken adds.

stella tour brussels

“Yes, I think so”, says Van Ginkel. “Everyone seemed to realize that ‘yes, this is where the future should be headed’. That a change needs to be brought about and that this is one of the ways that could be done.” Franken is also very positive. “We were truly able to deliver a ‘call to action,’ especially in the presence of the Executive Board. The fact that we got to join the Solar Team at such an event felt like a real tipping point,” he says. “It was great to have the balance between people working really hard on technical solutions, and us as sustainability ambassadors delving deeper into social matters.”

Tour de Brussels

In addition to all the serious talk, there was also time for some relaxation, fortunately. For example, a large part of Solar Team Eindhoven took Stella Terra for a tour of Brussels. “It was very special to drive our self-built solar car through the streets of Brussels. The off-road vehicle turned many heads,” says Van Ginkel enthusiastically.

The resurrection of a car plant in Brazil’s poor north-east stands as a symbol of China’s global advance — and the west’s retreat.

BYD, the Shenzhen-based conglomerate, has taken over an old Ford factory in Camaçari, which was abandoned by the American automaker nearly a century after Henry Ford first set up operations in Brazil.

When Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Brazil’s president, visited China last year, he met BYD’s billionaire founder and chair Wang Chuanfu. After that meeting, BYD picked the country for its first carmaking hub outside of Asia.

Under a $1bn-plus investment plan, BYD intends to start producing electric and hybrid automobiles this year at the site in Bahia state, which will also manufacture bus and truck chassis and process battery materials.

The new Brazil plant is no outlier — it falls into a wave of corporate Chinese investment in electric vehicle manufacturing supply chains in the world’s most important developing economies.

The inadvertent result of rising protectionism in the US and Europe could be to drive many emerging markets into China’s hands.

Last month, Joe Biden issued a new broadside against Beijing’s deep financial support of Chinese industry as he unveiled sweeping new tariffs on a range of cleantech products — most notably, a 100 per cent tariff on electric vehicles. “It’s not competition. It’s cheating. And we’ve seen the damage here in America,” Biden said.

The measures were partly aimed at boosting Biden’s chances in his presidential battle with Donald Trump. But the tariffs, paired with rising restrictions on Chinese investment on American soil, will have immense impact on the global auto market, in effect shutting China’s world-leading EV makers out of the world’s biggest economy.

The EU’s own anti-subsidy investigation into Chinese electric cars is expected to conclude next week as Brussels tries to protect European carmakers by stemming the flow of low-cost Chinese electric vehicles into the bloc.

Government officials, executives and experts say that the series of new cleantech tariffs issued by Washington and Brussels is forcing China’s leading players to sharpen their focus on markets in the rest of the world.

This, they argue, will lead to Chinese dominance across the world’s most important emerging markets, including south-east Asia, Latin America and the Middle East, and the remaining western economies that are less protectionist than the US and Europe.

“That is the part that seems to be lost in this whole discussion of ‘can we raise some tariffs and slow down the Chinese advance’? That’s only defending your homeland. That’s leaving everything else open,” says Bill Russo, the former head of Chrysler in Asia and founder of Automobility, a Shanghai consultancy.

“Those markets are in play and China is aggressively going after those markets.”

Indonesian President Joko Widodo talks to Elon Musk, chief executive of Tesla, on a visit to Texas

The new Chinese investments are often two-pronged — both in car manufacturing and the raw materials that are central to the new economy.

Ilaria Mazzocco, a senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, says the west needs to understand that China’s global ambitions create an opportunity for many countries to expand their manufacturing base and to obtain foreign direct investment in “technologies of the future”.

China’s cleantech investments in the developing world, she says, “really complicates” foreign policy for western governments, which have already tried to warn about the risk of becoming dependent on Beijing through President Xi Jinping’s so-called Belt and Road infrastructure programme.

“It is tough to tell a country in the developing world, ‘Hey, you shouldn’t want to have more factories or refining because it’s Chinese investment’,” she says. “With the [Belt and Road Initiative] there was a credible argument that a lot of debt is not going to be sustainable . . . but here if they open factories, they hire local people, then in the minds of the leaders of these countries, ‘why not?’.”

The International Energy Agency forecasts that this year 10.1mn EVs will be sold in China, 3.4mn in Europe, 1.7mn in the US. Fewer than 1.5mn EVs will be sold everywhere else in the world.

Yet the agency has forecast that the global EV fleet will grow eight-fold to about 240mn in 2030. This implies annual global EV sales of 20mn cars in 2025 and 40mn in 2030, or 30 per cent of all car sales. Moreover, an increasingly large share of that expansion is likely to come from new markets.

In some important developing economies, Chinese companies are investing in both production and processing raw materials. Nowhere is this more striking than China’s involvement in the EV ecosystem in Indonesia, home to the world’s largest reserves of nickel, a key component of EV batteries.

Last year alone companies domiciled in China and Hong Kong invested $13.9bn in Indonesia, most of which is believed to have been in the metals and mining industry. Chinese companies account for more than 90 per cent of the nickel smelters in the country.

Chinese banks have also been keen to provide financing for nickel plants when others have been hesitant, says Alexander Barus, chief executive of the Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park — the country’s largest nickel processing site, which was built by Tsingshan, a Chinese nickel producer, and a local partner.

“When we first started searching for mining investment, we went around the banks in Indonesia, no one supported us. The banks were in doubt, whether it would be profitable or not. But when we went to Chinese banks, they were ready to finance,” says Barus.

Having secured access to Indonesia’s key resources, Chinese companies have also been the first movers in setting up EV manufacturing plants, even as Indonesia — and President Joko Widodo personally — have courted other big names such as Tesla to set up EV manufacturing. BYD said early this year that it would invest $1.3bn in an EV factory in Indonesia.

The story is similar in Brazil where BYD and compatriot group Great Wall Motor are about to commence local manufacturing that could also serve for exports to the wider region.

Stella Li, a BYD executive, attends an event at the company’s São Paolo dealership

Great Wall is investing about $1.9bn in Latin America’s largest economy with production expected to start this year at a former Mercedes-Benz factory in Iracemápolis, São Paulo state.

As well as its investment in auto production at Camaçari, BYD is also on the lookout for lithium mining assets in Brazil , which is ramping up extraction of the key metal for EV batteries.

Brazil, which is the world’s sixth-biggest car market, has been relatively slow to embrace electrification. This is attributed in part to its widespread use of lower-carbon ethanol derived from sugarcane . But there are already signs of a shift. Last year sales of EVs almost doubled in Brazil and in recent months the country overtook Belgium to become the largest single export destination for Chinese EVs.

In an effort to stimulate a homegrown industry, Brasília is imposing rising tariffs on EV and hybrid imports — these will hit 35 per cent by mid-2026. Lula, himself a former metal worker, has promulgated a vision of a “green” industrial rejuvenation.

China’s publicity drive in the region includes BYD’s sponsorship of the Copa América football tournament for South American nations. Such marketing campaigns, coupled with aggressive pricing by Chinese car brands, has led to acceptance by Brazilian consumers, says Cassio Pagliarini, chief marketing officer at Bright Consulting, an automotive sector specialist.

In China, the expanding global push by EV makers is seen as part of the broader strategy under Xi of boosting political and economic ties with developing countries via his flagship Belt and Road Initiative.

Over recent years the value of China’s exports to emerging markets has overtaken that with developed economies, a historic change after decades of Chinese growth being more dependent on G7 economies.

“From the perspective of national strategy, there is no doubt that the focus of China’s future foreign economic strategy will shift towards developing countries,” Tu Xinquan, a professor and dean of China Institute for WTO Studies, at the University of International Business and Economics, told local media the day after Biden imposed new tariffs on Chinese EVs.

BYD cars at Yantai Port, Shandong province

Yet the expansion of China’s auto industry into these new markets is threatening to eat into the strong market share held by several multinational automakers.

This is particularly worrying for Japanese companies which have built up a strong position in the south-east Asian market. “China can make a very compelling sales pitch to south-east Asian countries,” says a senior Japanese government official, highlighting Beijing’s ability to sell not just electric vehicles but also critical raw materials for batteries. “That’s the biggest risk for Japan.”

Another senior executive working with a Japanese carmaker was more direct: “We’re terrified that Chinese cars will flood into south-east Asian markets.”

Jens Eskelund, president of the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China, says China’s push to promote high-tech manufacturing has put its companies into direct competition with their European counterparts in many sectors in markets across the world, including autos.

European businesses should not be “complacent about the situation”, he adds.

For some countries, the arrival of China’s EV industry is creating new tensions with a US administration, which does not want to cede influence to Beijing.

Over the past year, US officials have repeatedly warned that the Biden administration will take action if China tries to ease its industrial overcapacity problem by dumping goods on international markets.

One particular point of concern in Washington is Mexico, which has access to the US market through the USMCA, the trade agreement between the US, Canada and Mexico. Chinese companies, including BYD, have said they want to build factories in the country and several other rivals including MG and Chery have been talking to Mexican officials for more than a year.

Mexico’s government has been careful to not be seen to be courting China and has made clear in public statements its priority is the US relationship, including signing a memorandum of intent to start screening investments over the risk they pose to national security.

Leftist President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has nationalised the country’s lithium supplies and cancelled a concession held by Chinese firm Ganfeng for an operating mine in the country’s north.

Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico’s president-elect after a landslide victory on Sunday, leaned heavily on Chinese companies for transportation projects when she was mayor of Mexico City, buying electric buses and contracting out the renovation of the city’s oldest subway line to Chinese firms.

Yet Sheinbaum, a leftwing former climate scientist, insisted during the election campaign that USMCA would remain “fundamental”.

Mexican consumers, however, are rapidly embracing cars from China. Last year, one in five cars sold was made in China, although half of those were produced by non-Chinese brands.

Guillermo Rosales, head of Mexican auto distributors association AMDA, says imports from China have led to a clogging of ports in the country’s Pacific coast such as Lázaro Cárdenas.

“With the arrival of Chinese cars, [consumers] have a greater supply and more options to choose from,” he says, adding that US concerns did not worry Mexican consumers. “It’s a very open market for competition.”

Ambitions of China’s BYD stretch beyond EVs

stella tour brussels

The global plans of the company founded by Wang Chuanfu range from solar modules and electric buses, trucks and trains to complex transport systems. But is it trying to do too much? Full story from April

In Australia, China’s global expansion is also leading to new questions about national security as new high-tech cars collect information from drivers and their surroundings.

A sharp increase in the number of Chinese-branded EVs on its roads — BYD’s sales were up sixfold last year — has sparked complaints over data and infrastructure security.

Australia was the first country to ban the use of Chinese telecoms vendors in its 5G networks in 2018 setting off a period of tension with China. The move to ban Huawei and ZTE was supported by Australia’s security services, which said that the use of “high-risk” vendors in the telecoms networks could have had implications for the security of data and infrastructure in the country including transportation.

Opposition senator James Paterson has argued that the potential risk posed by Chinese EVs went beyond the person buying and driving the car but to the community they live in given the amount of data that a vehicle can collect. “We’ve all seen the movies where electric cars can be weaponised,” he says.

Paterson wants the Australian government to instigate a national security review of Chinese EVs. “We didn’t allow those companies to become the backbone of our communications network. Why would we let them become the backbone of our transport network?”
