  • Rock tour: This 30 minute cruise takes you from the northern bank to Rheinfallfelsen which is a rock in the centre of the falls.  Visitors can disembark the boat and climb to the top of the rock via a staircase and onto the viewing platform for excellent 360° panoramic views of the falls.  Rhine Falls boat ride price: CHF 20 per adult and CHF 10 per child (6-16).
  • Rhine Crossing: This is a short three-minute cruise which takes you from one side of the falls to the other. Rhine Falls viewing platform

Viewing Platforms

There are also viewing platforms which don’t require you to take a boat trip.  These viewing platforms have been built on both sides of the falls and reach out reasonably close to the water.

If visiting during the months where the flow is at its fastest, do expect to get wet from the spray of the falls.

While the northern platform is free, Schloss Laufen am Rheinfall on the southern bank has an entry fee.  This viewing platform is right on the falls, and you can also visit Historama, an exhibit on the history of the Rhine Falls.

The Rhine falls entrance fee to Schloss Laufen am Rheinfall is CHF 5 per adult and CHF 3 per child (6-15)

In addition to these official viewing platforms, there is also the rail bridge (with a pedestrian path) which crosses the river, just above the falls.

Rhine Falls can be visited any time of the year, but I recommend going on a beautiful summer day, preferably after it has rained the previous week or days. The waterfalls will be at their most powerful force when you do this.

The melting glacier waters combined with the additional rainfall over the past few days will result in a fast water flow, making it a really enjoyable experience, especially on a boat. There are also ferry crossings during these months that connect the two banks of the river – an ideal way to visit both Laufen Castle and Wörth Castle after some fun in the water.

Before jumping on a boat, plan your trip well. Whether you prefer a tour, train, or bus, here is our list of the best ways to get from Zurich to Rhine Falls.

1. From Zurich to Rhine Falls by Tour

Rhine Falls

The easiest way to discover the falls is with a half-day Rhine Falls Tour from Zurich . This almost four-hour-long tour departs from either the airport or the city center. At 9am, an air-conditioned vehicle with your own local guide will pick you up at the agreed location.

The short drive to the falls is very scenic, passing by historical charming villages with timber houses and green rolling valleys and hills. Your guide will answer your questions about the area, plus share details on the sights right out your window.

Your first stop is at the medieval Laufen Castle , a cliff-top fortress with a 1,000-year-old history. A stroll through the stone courtyard and then on the Belvedere panoramic trail will lead you directly to the "Känzeli" viewing platform for a roaring close view of the Rhine Falls, and the Wörth Castle on the opposite side of the Rhein river.

After you've snapped enough pictures, you'll walk a few minutes to reach Rhine Falls, Europe's most powerful waterfall. Here, you'll have one free hour to explore on your own . There's a restaurant at the castle, and you can also tour the Historama rooms, where you'll see historical films and photos and learn about some of the falls' famous visitors.

In summer, you have the option to take a boat ride (not included in the price) to experience the falls up close. Some of the boats get you close to the falls, some travel down the Rhine, and some will take you across the water to Schlössli Wörth, a tiny castle on a tiny island in the center of the river.

You'll have the support of the guide throughout the entire tour , so you can learn more about the history of the area and the falls themselves – including how they were considered for "removal," as local governments believed they were an obstacle to boat traffic.

On the way back to Zurich, you'll stop at the 16th-century Munot Fortress , a ring-shaped fortification that has become the heart and landmark of the town of Schaffhausen. Walk around the cobblestone paths inside and around the fort before you continue your way back to the city. The ticket to explore Munot is included and is a great end to this nature-meets-history tour.

You can choose to end your tour at the Sihlquai Bus Terminal (from where you can take public transportation to almost anywhere in Zurich) or get off at the airport. If you are departing Zurich on an afternoon flight, this could be the perfect tour to do on your last day. Your driver will drop you off at the airport around 12:15pm, so you can head directly to check-in.

2. From Zurich to Rhine Falls By Train

Aerial view of a train by the Rhine Falls

The falls are less than an hour train ride from Zurich – if you're traveling on your own, the train will give you a chance to experience panoramic views along the way plus the experience of riding the superior Swiss trains.

To get there, you'll need to depart from Zürich Hauptbahnhof (Zurich HB Main Station) and get off at one of two stations: SBB railway station Neuhausen am Rheinfall or SBB railway station Schloss Laufen am Rheinfall. Both stations are about 50 minutes away from Zurich and an equal distance to the falls but on opposite sides of the river.

Once you get off the train, exit the station, and the falls will just be a few minutes away. If you're planning on boarding the summer boat that takes you close to the falls, choose a train that goes to the Schloss Laufen am Rheinfall station, as the boat landing is just steps away.

Boat season starts April 1st and ends in October, and it gets very busy during the summer months, when there's usually a line for the boats. If you're visiting on a day trip and don't want to wait, you can reserve tickets online in advance. Between November and March, the castle and panorama trail remain open, but there are no boat tours available.

Some Swiss Railways trains require a transfer in either Winterthur or Neuhausen, so make sure you check timetables so you don't miss it. For times, prices, and to see which trains are direct, take a look at the Swiss Railways official site .

3. From Zurich to Rhine Falls by Bus

Rhine Falls, the largest waterfall in Europe

For the ultimate budget trip, buses can't be beaten. They take only slightly longer than trains but cost less than half the price .

Major bus companies such as FlixBus offer comfortable air-conditioned buses that leave from the simply named Zurich Bus Station and make their way to the medieval town of Schaffhausen, near the German border.

Here, you'll have to switch to a local yellow Swiss PostAuto bus . A number of lines get you to your next stop: Neuhausen, Zentrum, including buses number 1, 6, and 12. When in doubt, ask the driver before boarding.

The ride is just seven minutes long and brings you to the town center, a five-minute walk to the falls. Bus 10, which leaves from the Schaffhausen train station, takes you directly to the falls – get off at the Rheinfall (Neuhausen) stop, and you'll be right in the boat landing area.

There are additional buses that make the trip from Schaffhausen to the falls, so finding a connection shouldn't be hard. Keep in mind that different lines stop in different areas of town, so you'll have to look for signs or ask for directions once you arrive.

Some buses also don't run on Sundays, so be prepared to use an alternative service if you're traveling over the weekend.

Tip: Make sure you get a ticket for the local bus from a ticketing machine at the stop or a nearby train/bus station. Many local buses don't have an onboard ticketing machine.

The Rhine Falls are the centrepiece of this circular hike. It starts from Laufen Castle, towering majestically above the Rhine Falls – unperturbed by the immense force of the waters that rage below it. We descend straight to the water's edge, cross the bridge to the other side and start climbing again opposite the castle.

Description

The circular route descends straight to the water's edge, with access to the viewing platform (entry charge) and the boats. We walk downstream to the Nohl Rhine Jetty and cross the bridge to the other bank. The route keeps following the Rhine, with the Falls in front of us again; soon, we reach Wörth Castle, literally within spitting distance of the raging waters of Europe's largest waterfall. The colourful boats that rock and sway towards the spectacle and the rocky islet in the middle of the waterfall seem almost surreal. The route climbs to the left, past the mill-wheel, and along the Rhine Falls to more viewing pulpits above. The trail then follows the upstream bend and crosses the Flurlinger footbridge, back to Laufen Castle. To shorten the route, hikers can return directly to the starting point via the railway bridge.

The impressive Rhine Falls, the largest waterfalls in Europe, are a popular day trip from Zürich, a place we always take our visitors.

You can get very close to the raging water by wander stairways and viewing platforms built into the rock wall next to the falls. For more excitement, you can ride a boat to a tall rock in the middle of the falls, then climb stairs to a thrilling viewpoint.

For families, there’s a playground on the northern banks and an big ropes adventure park in the forest next to the river, a great add-on to keep kids happy. There is also a nice walking path along the river, if you prefer to keep your distance from the action.

We usually combine the falls with a visit to the nearby Stein am Rhein , an adorable medieval village up river. If you are visiting Zurich, you can book a guided tour from Zürich , that includes both the Rhine Falls and Stein am Rhein village.

Keep reading for practical tips for planning your Rhine Falls visit.

swiss travel pass rheinfall

The Rhine Falls are located north of Zürich, on the border of Germany.

Switzerland map with arrow showing location of Rhine Falls

You can view the falls from both sides of the river: southern banks (#1 aka Schloss Laufen ) and northern banks (#2 aka Schlössli Wörth ).

swiss travel pass rheinfall

  • Southern banks – castle, stairs and viewing platforms along falls
  • Northern banks – free viewing areas, restaurant, playground, boats
  • Rock viewpoint in middle of falls
  • Adventure Park Rheinfall – ropes park with zip lines
  • River walking path – 7km loop, see trail map

We like starting on the southern banks, where you walk on stairs and platforms very close to the falls. On this side, there is a castle, museum, and restaurant. This side requires an entrance fee to see the falls.

On the northwest side of the river, there is nice promenade along the river, with a few restaurants, benches, and a playground. There is no entrance fee on this side, but the falls are much farther away. You can catch the boat from either side, taking you to the center of the falls or simply across the river.

Visiting with small children

If you need a stroller, best to visit the northern banks where you there is an obstacle free path along the riverbank and playground. The southern side has lots of stairs and is not possible with strollers.

On the southern side, the barriers on the sides of the stairs and platforms are generally safe. But best to keep small children close and don’t let them wander alone.

On the boats, you don’t have to pay for children under 6 if they sit on your lap, but you can buy a seat for them if you prefer. The boats have low sides and rock significantly as you approach the falls. Make sure to hold onto small children so they don’t fall out. The stairs to the rock viewpoint are steep and slippery, not safe for small children.

On the northern banks, you’ll find the Adventure Park Rheinfall , which is a big ropes climbing park in the forest. This is a great add-on for families with older children, who need a fun activity to balance out the sightseeing.

They have 14 courses ropes parkour courses at varying difficulties, possible for kids 8+. They also have two small children’s courses for kids aged 4-7.

They are usually open daily in good weather from late March through October. But check the website for current opening times and conditions before making plans.

You can reserve a spot online , which is best on weekends. You usually only need to reserve a few days in advance.

Location: Nohlstrasse 142, 8212 Neuhausen am Rheinfall , right next to the Rhine Falls northern banks parking.

If you want to stretch your legs, there is a nice 7km walking path along the river banks. It’s a loop, crossing two bridges, so you can start on either side of the river. The path is obstacle free, well marked and easy to follow – Route 896 Rheinfall-Rundweg. See trail map .

How to get there

I recommend visiting the southern banks, which has the stairs and viewing platforms very close to the falls. This is the best view and most fun.

If you are visiting Zurich, it can be more convenient to book a guided tour from Zürich , that includes both the Rhine Falls and Stein am Rhein village. Remember to add on the boat ride if you want to do that.

Take a train to Neuhausen, Schloss Laufen am Rheinfall , which is just below the castle. You can buy tickets at the bottom of the stairs and walk up to the viewing platforms.

The address for the southern banks is Areal Schloss Laufen, 8447 Dachsen . From the A4 highway, take exit Uhwiesen toward Rheinfall/Dachsen and follow signs to the Rheinfall and Schloss . There’s a large parking lot by the castle. There is a second overflow lot down the street.

If you prefer the northwest side, drive to the parking area at Nohlstrasse 142, 8212 Neuhausen am Rheinfall . There is a metered parking lot near the river. This side is not easily accessible by public transportation.

On the southern banks, you need a ticket to enter the falls viewing area. In 2024, tickets cost CHF 5/adult, CHF 3.50/children 6 and up. You can purchase tickets online or at the ticket booth at the entrance. Entrance to the castle and boat rides cost extra.

There are so many boat tour options, it can be confusing. We think the “Rock Experience” ride (yellow boat) is the best, since you get to stopover at the rock in the middle of the falls. If that doesn’t fit your budget, we think the much less expensive “15-Minute Round Trip” (blue boat) is still a great experience.

swiss travel pass rheinfall

All boat tours leave from the northern bank (aka Schlössli Wörth). If you are starting on the southern bank (aka Schloss Laufen ), you first need to ride the “No 2 Red Line” ferry to the northern banks. Then switch to the correct boat for your tour. Some tickets include the transfer between shores.

  • Note: If you booked a guided tour , make sure to add on the boat ride as it is often not included in the base price.

Rock Experience (yellow boat)

This boat ride takes you close to the falls and stops at the rock in the middle of the falls. The whole tour is about 30 mins, with about 20 mins at the rock, to climb the stairs to the viewpoint and take pics.

This boat is labeled: Felsenfahrt Nr. 1 Gelbe Linie , aka “Rock Tour No. 1 Yellow Boat.”

In 2024, this boat ride costs CHF 20/adult, CHF 10/child aged 6-15. Children under 6 are free, but they but must sit on your lap. Also the rock stairs are a bit dangerous for small children. Best to book online to reduce your waiting time.

This boat runs daily, from late March through October. The boat departs every 20 mins, from 9:30 – 18:30 in summer. In spring and fall, hours shorten to 11:00 – 17:00.

15-Minute Round Trip (blue boat)

This short boat ride takes you very close to the falls, but no stopover at the rock. This blue boat is labeled: Kleine Rundfahrt Nr. 4 Blaue Linie , aka “Short Tour No. 4 Blue Boat.”

In 2024, this boat ride costs CHF 8/adult, CHF child aged 6-15, under 6 are free, but must sit on your lap. Best to book online to reduce your waiting time.

This boat runs daily, from late March through October. The boat departs every 12 mins, from 9:30 – 18:30 in summer. In spring and fall, hours shorten to 11:00 – 17:00.

Rhine River tour (green boat)

If you want a longer tour on the river, the Schiffmändli boat company offers a 30 min round trip. This tour goes close to the falls and includes the ferry between the southern and northern banks. It does not include a stopover at the rock. The boat is green and labeled “3 A – 30 Minuten Rundfahrt.”

swiss travel pass rheinfall

This tour runs daily from late March to mid October. It runs 8 times per day and can sell out.

In 2024, it costs CHF 10/adult, CHF 6/child aged 6-15, under 6 free. You can buy tickets in advance online to reserve your spot (German website only).

Starting on the south side, you buy tickets near the entrance, where you’ll also find gift shops and a restaurant. Walk through the castle gates to access the falls.

Riding boat close to falls

The boat tours leave from the dock near the restaurant. When the kids were little, we did the short boat tour without stopping at the rock. The boat rocked around a lot when we got close to the falls. The kids were a bit scared and we got a little wet.

swiss travel pass rheinfall

On the “Rock Experience” boat ride, you stop at this tall rock.

Then you can climb up wet, slippery stairs so you are standing right in the middle of the action.

people climbing stairs on rock to viewpoint in the middle of the Rhine Falls

It’s fantastic, but the stairs are super slippery and difficult to manage with all the people crowded up and down. Not suitable for little kids or those with reduced mobility.

Hi Tanya: I am trying to find info on Engstligen Falls and how to get there. It appears that a gondola is the best way to see it without a serious hike. Do you know about it or is there a web site that gives technical info on how to see it. J. Patrick Hartman

Hi J. Patrick, you may find this post helpful: https://swissfamilyfun.com/engstligenalp-valley-walk/ You can ride the cable car up and see the falls during the ride. Then you can do a short hike down to a viewpoint over the falls. Otherwise, you would need to hike from the bus stop near the cable car, up the river to get to the base of the falls. Hope this helps.

If the southern bank ticket office closes at 19:00 but the viewing points can be visited around the clock, does that mean the visit is free after 19:00? Or that you need to get past the entrance gates before 19:00 to see the falls at sunset or at night?

My understanding is that the east side of the falls closes and cannot be entered after hours.

Hi Tanya! We are visiting Zurich for a year and visited the falls today! We took the train all the way Schaffhausen, walked the old, medieval town, and then walked down the riverside (4km) all the way to the falls. There are trails on both sides of the river. We made our way to the South side of the falls, and continued our hike down the river side, just 1-2 feet feet away from the water, until we reached the Dachsen badi (15 CHF family entrance). You can swim in the river, there is a beautiful pool and playground, and restaurant at this badi. They also offer boats that take you up river (15 mins, 6 CHF) from this badi, with a floating noodle or “tube” , they drop you off close to the falls in the water, and you swim or float back to the badi, which takes 45 mins. We always love to end a long hike in the water, and this was just perfect! Thank you for everything you do!

Thanks for this excellent trip report and tips! I’ll definitely use those on my next visit. Glad you enjoyed your outing.

We enjoyed our visit to Stein am Rhein and the Rheinfalls earlier this week. We took the train and went first to Stein am Rhein, where we walked around a bit and had lunch, then took the train to Schloss Laufen to visit the falls. When we arrived, it wasn’t entirely clear what the plan was (i.e., what we should do first or where we should go), so we wandered around like lost tourists for a while, but in the end, I think that’s actually the thing to do there ;). We went up and down and around to see the falls from every angle, then took a short boat ride to get another view of the falls. The 15 min roundtrip boat was a blast and somehow I ended up dripping wet while everyone else was just misted. The only things I missed were the playground on the Schloss Laufen side (my boys were dying to play on the playground on the other side but we had to leave) and the way to walk across the bridge to the other side of the river. But it was an enjoyable outing nonetheless.

I agree, the boat trip is definitely the highlight. We have never spent much time up by the castle but always go straight to the stairs that overlook the falls. Glad you had a nice time.

Lovely Post Thanks for sharing

Great blog – one of my first “go to” sites for planning anything! Thanks for such a detailed and informative blog. Just wanted to add that the boat trip is only available from late March to October. Went there today and had a great day – restaurant across from the falls (hence better view), Schlössli Worth, is brilliant – food wise, service wise and of course view wise… and surprisingly, cost wise!

Yup, I confirm, this blog is terrific: I was just trying to find ideas of where to go with cousins from the US and found all the information I needed right here! Thank you!

Thanks Angie. Glad I could help 🙂

Hi Tanya, My in-laws are in and specifically requested to go on this trip, thought I’d check it out to see if you had any info and of course you did….. THIS BLOG is AMAZING!!! You should be so proud of yourself…… I truely am inspired to start mine…. someday!!! thanks again, angie brown

Rhine Falls – Europe’s Biggest Waterfall

Rhine Falls – Europe's Biggest Waterfall

  • Natural spectacle
  • Largest waterfall in Europe
  • 150 meters wide, 23 meters high

The Rhine Falls provides a magnificent spectacle. Across a width of 150 meters (492 feet) and a height of 23 meters (75.5 feet), 600 m³ (21,189 cubic feet) of water plunge over the falls in the summer.

An adventure path with elevator goes from Laufen Castle to the outlook platforms and enables an unobstructed view of this spectacle of nature.  A boat ride to the Rhine Falls basin, the rocks in the middle of the Rhine and downstream to the national border or farther to the Rheinau power plant is also worthwhile. The Adventure Park at Rhine Falls is on the north bank – one of Europe's most spectacular rope parks. All those lusting for adventure can glide from tree to tree on 11 different courses with a breathtaking view of Rhine Falls.

Rhine Falls Switzerland: An Epic Day Trip For All

swiss travel pass rheinfall

The Rhine Falls, Switzerland is one of the country’s most iconic attractions , so much so that it receives over one million visitors, both local and international, every year.

If you are planning on visiting Switzerland, then visiting the Rhine Falls while you are there is a must. But, what’s the best way to visit Rhine Falls? That is what I am here to tell you.

In this travel guide, I will run through everything you need to know about the Rhine Falls and visiting the Rhine Falls. We’ll discuss why the Rhine falls are so popular, where they are, how to get there, where to stay, and how best to see the Rhine Falls, Switzerland too!

Table of Contents

Rhine Falls Facts

Rhine Falls Schaffhausen

The Rhine Falls, Switzerland is the largest waterfall in Europe and the most powerful waterfall too.

As you would expect, the Rhine Falls was created by the Rhine River, Switzerland’s longest river, and the second longest river in Europe.

The Rhine Falls are thought to be around 14000 – 17000 years old. You might think this is quite an old age for a Swiss waterfall , but geological terms are actually quite new.

The Rhine Falls formed when the river eroded softer rocks around a limestone cliff face which created the Rhine Falls you see today. You can easily see a result of the erosion in the form of the Rheinfallfelsen , an iconic large central rock formation in the middle of the Rhine Falls.

The section of the mighty river Rhine where you will find the Rhine Falls is known as the High Rhine . This is where the river drops from a higher level to a lower one, to create the Rhine Falls.

The Rhine Falls consists of just a single drop the waters cascade down but the volume of water flowing down the Rhine Falls is mind-blowing.

Being 23 meters high and 150 meters wide, the Rhine Falls drops around 600,000 liters of water per second during the summer. It slows down in winter due to the water freezing in the mountains but still has a flow rate of 250,000 liters per second.

You can only imagine the power of the Rhine Falls and with so much water passing through it, why it is the biggest waterfall in Europe.

You might expect the Rhine Falls Basin (the part beneath the waterfalls that collects the water) to be very deep. The Rhine Falls Basin is around 13 meters deep at its deepest part which is quite deep, and it is expected to get deeper as the Rhine Falls erode it more and more.

Where Are the Rhine Falls Located?

The Rhine Falls, Switzerland is located in northern Switzerland about 25 km south of the German border.

The Rhine Falls sits between the Swiss cities of Schaffhausen and Zürich, and its closest village is Neuhausen am Rheinfall, which is about 1 km away from the waterfalls.

If you follow the Rhine River upstream for 20 km or so you will reach Lake Constance , one of the most beautiful lakes in Switzerland. Nearby, a small way up the Rhine River is the famous town of Stein am Rhein , known to be one of the best-preserved medieval towns in the country.

The landscapes surrounding this area and the Rhine Falls are stunning, so there is a lot to see and do in this part of Switzerland, after your visit the Rhine Falls, of course.

How to Get to the Rhine Falls?

Once you have made your way to Switzerland, Rhine Falls is accessed in one of two ways: by car or by train. After all, Switzerland’s public transport can take you anywhere!

Switzerland’s transportation infrastructure is as good as it gets! The roads are fantastic and the trains run as efficiently as possible, plus you are blessed with stunning views along the way too!

Rhine Falls By Car

If you have rented a car or have your own, then driving to the falls is very easy. You have two parking options to choose from, one on the northern river bank, and one on the southern river bank.

The Schlössli Wörth car park is located on the northern bank and costs CHF 5 for the first hour and CHF 2 per hour on top. The Laufen Castle car park on the southern bank is free of charge. But, which is the best one to park at?

While the southern bank car park is free, the northern bank car park offers better access to Rhine Falls. You will find a wheelchair lift to the Rhine Falls Basin and a ramp that takes you to the Rhine Falls boat rides.

There is also a lift to the Rheinfall viewing platform . This all makes the northern bank car park far easier! There is no boat access from the southern bank car park, but there is a viewing platform there.

Here are the drive times from all the major Swiss cities:

  • From Schaffhausen: 10 minutes
  • From Zurich: 40 minutes
  • From Lucerne: 1.25 hours
  • From Basel: 1.5 hours
  • From Interlaken: 2.25 hours
  • From Geneva: 3.5 hours

Rhine Falls By Train

By Swiss design, there is, of course, a Rhine Falls train station, in fact, there are two. You can either get the train to the northern bank train station Neuhausen am Rheinfall or Schloss Laufen am Rheinfall on the southern bank.

No matter which train station you choose to arrive at, you can walk to the Rhine Falls in under 10 minutes. I would, however, suggest arriving on the northern side if you are planning on going on a Rhine Falls Boat Ride, for the same reasons as the north car park is best.

Here are the train journey times from all the major Swiss cities:

  • From Zurich: 1 hour
  • From Lucerne: 2 hours
  • From Basel: 2 hours
  • From Interlaken: 3.25 hours
  • From Geneva: 4 hours

If you are staying in Zurich, you can also join a half-day tour that includes transport to and from the Rhine Falls from your accommodation in Zurich.

Best Way to Experience the Rhine Falls

Boat trip on the Rhine Falls

You have two choices when it comes to experiencing the Rhine Falls. You can either hop on a Rhine Falls boat ride or view the falls from the viewing platforms. I would recommend doing it all, but here are your options.

Boat trips are only available between the months of April and November, and are the most popular way of seeing Rhine Falls. There are quite a few different ones to choose from:

The Rock Tour

The best boat trip in my eyes is the Rock Tour . This is a 30-minute boat ride that takes you to the central rock formation, Rheinfallfelsen from the north bank.

You will get to see Rhine Falls from the basin and climb to the top of the rock via a staircase. The views from the rock are unbeatable as they provide a 360-degree panorama of the falls on both sides.

This is one of the more expensive cruises and costs CHF 20 per adult and CHF 10 per child.

The Rhine Crossing

This is the most affordable of all the boats and costs just CHF 3 one way or CHF 5 return for adults or CHF 2 one way and CHF 3 return for kids.

The boat ride consists of taking you from one side of the river to the other, and back again if you buy a return. You will see the falls in all its glory from every river angle possible.

Short Round Trip

This Rhine Falls boat ride lasts about 15 minutes and gives you views of the falls from a range of different spots. It is quite affordable too, costing CHF 7 per adult and CHF 4 per child. 0

This Rhine Falls Boat tour only operates in the months of June, July, and August. It lasts around 30 minutes and takes you all around the river to give you fantastic views of the falls. Plus, it comes with audio commentary so you can learn about the falls too! It costs CHF 11 per adult and CHF 7 per child

Rhine Falls and Rhine River Cruise

This Rhine Falls Boat Ride is about as comprehensive as it gets. It lasts either 30 mins or over an hour and takes you via the falls, down the Rhine River to the German border, and back again.

It is a great way to see the falls and the surrounding area and costs CHF 9 per adult and CHF 4.50 per child.

Viewing Platforms

View of Rhine Falls

There are two viewing platforms to choose from if you don’t want to take a boat ride, one on each side.

The northern Rhine Falls viewing platform is free to enter and reaches out quite close to the falls. Expect to get a little wet and have an amazing view.

The southern Rhine Falls viewing platform called Schloss Laufen am Rheinfall costs CHF 5 per adult and CHF 3 per child to enter. This is the best of the two viewing platforms as it is right over the falls and gives you an awesome view.

You will also find the Historama exhibit explaining the history of the falls which is great to visit before or after the viewing platforms.

You can also cross the river by using the rail bridge upstream of the falls. This gives you a whole new view of the falls and you don’t have to pay either.

When Is the Best Time to Visit the Rhine Falls?

You can visit Rhine Falls all year round; no matter what time of year you go, you will not be disappointed.

The best time to see the Rhine Falls is in the months of June and September though. This is when the falls will be at their most powerful but with fewer visitors compared to the very busy months of July and August.

The falls are also beautiful in winter when surrounded by snow-covered scenery but the flow rate is considerably lower and less impressive.

Where to Eat Around the Rhine Falls?

There are quite a few different restaurant options very close to the Rhine Falls and some of them even look over the falls!

If you are looking for something fancy, Laufen Castle on the south side offers fine dining with views of the falls, and Schlössli Wörth offers something similar but on the north side.

Mühlerad Bistro is a solid affordable option close to the northern viewpoint platform or you can head to Restaurant Park am Rheinfall for pizza and pasta overlooking the falls.

If you are in a rush you can stop off at Spice Bistro outside the boat area and grab some great food to go.

Where to Stay Near the Rhine Falls?

If you want to stay close to the Rhine Falls, then you have to choose between staying in either the small village of Neuhausen Am Rheinfall or in the larger city of Schaffhausen.

The closest Rhine Falls hotels are in Neuhausen Am Rheinfall and would recommend staying at Zak Neuhausen Hotel.

Schaffhausen has a lot more options for things to do and you will find a better hotel there too. I would recommend Vienna House zur Bleiche Hotel .

Zürich is just 40 minutes away by car so you could also choose to stay there if you prefer a big city to a smaller one in the countryside.

Other Attractions and Activities Around the Rhine Falls

Rhine Falls

There is a lot more to do around the Rhine Falls than just looking at the view. The area surrounding the falls and the river are stunning. Here is what I recommend.

  • Spending a day at Lake Constance is a must. This stunning lake with views into the alps is lined with beaches and forests. Make a picnic, take your towels and park up on a beach if you are there in summer and enjoy a refreshing swim with the best views possible. You can also enjoy paddle boarding, sailing and more
  • Stein am Rhein is also a must-see. This little town sits on the banks of the Rhine river and is one of the most preserved medieval towns in Switzerland. Spend half a day exploring this stunning town and seeing the ancient architecture.
  • Going on a canoe tour on the Rhine is a stunning way to see the surrounding countryside, the falls, and have loads of fun on the water too. These only operate between April and October though.
  • There are plenty of hiking and biking trails all around the Rhine Falls area, this is Switzerland after all. You can choose to incorporate the falls into your hike or not, that is up to you.
  • If you are traveling with kids, head to Adventure Park . It is open between April and October and is a load of fun. You and/or your kids can enjoy the biggest forest rope course in Switzerland while overlooking the Rhine Falls.
  • Make sure to go and see the Rhine Falls at night as well as during the day. At night, the falls are lit up in lots of different colors and are somehow even more impressive in a different way. The lights are turned off for the full moon though, which is just as good to see!
  • If you are visiting the falls over the 31st of July, head to the falls at 9:30 pm to see the Rhine Falls in Flames. You will experience an amazing fireworks display that takes place above the falls, it is quite a spectacular thing to see!

Tips for Visiting the Rhine Falls

Rhine Falls

Here are some useful tips that will ensure your Rhine Falls trip goes as smoothly as possible!

  • You can pay in Euros everywhere around the Rhine Falls so there is no need to change money into Swiss Francs if coming from other Euro countries
  • Make sure you have some grippy shoes to wear as the rocks surrounding the falls a very slippery due to the constant spray of the waterfall
  • If you don’t want to get wet while viewing the falls then make sure you have a light rain jacket to protect you from the spray and keep you dry
  • If you want to save some money while visiting the Rhine Falls, bring water, snacks, and a homemade picnic with you. Nothing is cheap in Switzerland and food and drink prices are even more expensive close to the falls
