How To Make Microsoft Teams Work In Safari

October 2023 Update: A new version of Teams for Mac has now been released.

If you’re having trouble using Microsoft Teams in Safari then here we show you how to make Teams work in the Safari browser on a Mac.

Limited Offer: You can currently get 68% off a Microsoft Office For Mac Home & Business Lifetime License for $69.99 (normally $219.99) for a limited period.

Safari uses something called Intelligent Tracking Prevention which blocks third-party tracking cookies. In order for Microsoft Teams to work in Safari however, Teams needs to use cookies.

Intelligent Tracking Prevention blocks the login.microsoftonline.com cookie which prevents Microsoft Teams from opening.

Although this isn’t a tracking cookie, Microsoft Teams requires a login cookie to secure your login into Teams.

Follow these instructions to use Microsoft Teams in Safari:

  • Go to Preferences > Privacy   and uncheck the Prevent cross-site tracking  setting.
  • Close your browser and then go to Microsoft Teams in Safari.

You can then use Microsoft Teams in the Safari browser on a Mac.

When you’ve finished using Teams, it’s a good idea to go back to the Privacy settings and re-check the cross-site tracking setting to protect your privacy when using other sites.

If you still can’t get Teams to work in Safari, then your only other option is to use another browser such as Chrome or Firefox.

Alternatively, you can download and install the Microsoft Teams For Mac desktop app which is probably a good idea anyway if you use Microsoft Teams regularly.

Teams Not Working After Updating To Ventura

If you’ve recently updated to macOS Ventura and are finding that Microsoft Teams won’t work, then the above fix may not work.

In this case, the best option is to try using a free tool called Office Reset which will reset Microsoft Office applications including Microsoft Teams.

Once you’ve used Office Reset in Ventura, you should find that MS Teams works again in macOS Ventura.

Microsoft Teams is a popular application for business communications . If you're invited to a meeting and new to the app, you might not know how to attend when the time comes. There are various ways to join a Teams meeting.

Whether you use Microsoft Teams on your desktop, the web, or your mobile device, you can join a meeting easily.

The Microsoft Teams desktop and web application are identical when it comes to joining a meeting. So you can use these options no matter which platform you choose.

Join From a Chat or Channel

Whether the meeting is about to begin or already in progress, you can join from the Chat section of Teams. If the meeting is taking place in a Channel, you have the option to join from there as well.

Click "Chat" on the left side of the application and select the meeting. You'll then see the option to "Join" at the top.

If the meeting is in a Channel, simply choose "Teams," visit the channel, and you'll see the same option. Click "Join."

Join From the Calendar

Another way to join your meeting is from the Calendar section in Teams.

Click "Calendar" on the left side. You should see the meeting on the correct date and time in the calendar. Select the meeting and click "Join."

Join From a Link

If the meeting organizer shared a link, you can join this way too. Maybe you received the link in an email, text, or another message.

Click the link and the Microsoft Teams app will open on your device. If you don't have the application installed, you'll be directed to the web where you can join the meeting (Edge and Chrome only) or download the app.

Join From a Notification

One other convenient way to join a Teams meeting is from a notification.

If you have alerts enabled for Teams on your computer and see a notification that a meeting is ready to start, click it. Depending on if you use Windows or Mac, your notification appearance varies.

Related: How to Configure Microsoft Teams Notifications

Here, we received the notification in Windows. When you select the alert, the calendar opens displaying the meeting. Click the link to open Teams and join the meeting.

You have similar ways to join a meeting on your iPhone, iPad, or Android device as on your desktop computer.

You can join from the Chat section or a Channel if that's where the meeting is being held.

Select "Chat," choose the meeting, and tap "Join" at the top. For a channel, select "Teams," choose the channel, and tap "Join."

The Teams mobile app has a Calendar section just like the desktop and web versions; it just isn't as obvious.

Tap "More" on the bottom right and select "Calendar." You'll then see your meeting on the date and time it's scheduled. Tap "Join."

If you receive a link to the meeting from the organizer, you can join using it as well. Tap the link and the Teams app will open for you to join the meeting. Tap "Join Now" and you're in.

When you enable notifications for meetings in Teams, you can not only receive a reminder of the meeting but also tap the alert to join.

Here we received our reminder on Apple Watch and a notification on iPhone. You can tap the iPhone notification to open Teams, then hit "Join Now."

If you don't have the Microsoft Teams app or happen to be traveling during the meeting time, you have a couple of additional ways to make sure you attend the meeting.

If the organizer set up a call-in number, you can join the meeting by phone . Check the meeting invitation on your desktop or in the Teams mobile app to see if a number is included.

Maybe you're on the road when the meeting is taking place. If you have Apple CarPlay, you can join as you drive . Note that you can only use Teams audio when using CarPlay, and you  are muted by default when you join.

Teams on Mac: Use App or Chrome instead of Safari

This article applies to: Microsoft Teams

Microsoft Teams for Safari is still in preview, and some features, such as joining meetings or using the camera, sometimes don't work unless settings are adjusted. Using the  Teams for Mac app  is recommended. If you need to use a browser, try Chrome, which doesn't encounter the same issues that occur when trying to use Teams in Safari.

Teams and Mac: via Chrome works but App and Safari not working. When a colleague sends a link I want to open in Teams App but will not. Safari does not open. So I copy the link to Chrome and Teams opens fine.

With all this schooling from home, I really hope Microsoft will consider Mac users and get the Teams App working flawlessly. We teachers have enough stress as it is. Thank you for your consideration.

@SharonZhao The latest Safari update (v 15.0) is not working with Teams. Any plan to update Teams to work with this version?

@ amym-4773,

It has no such plan for Microsoft Teams now. You could pay attention to Microsoft 365 roadmap. This link lists all related plan for Safari with Microsoft Teams for reference.

I've tried to install the desktop version and get an installation failed error every time

I am also frustrated because I like using Safari but when I do try to sign into Teams, I get the following image:

Screenshot 2023-07-18 at 11.13.05 AM

I would not mind as much but it says, "You can use it, but it may impact your experience on other websites," but I do not see how I can go back to the Teams view. I cannot download Teams on this computer. Is it better to just use the Chrome browser since it does allow me to access my Teams?

When I go to the teams website in Safari it seems to be working fine. But then I get redirected to this page saying that it is beta and all. The frustrating thing is that it says "You can use it". While in reality I cannot because this warning page that cannot be dismissed. Downloading the app doesn't really help. Because the app only allows you to be in one teams site / company at a time - the biggest downside of teams compared to Slack.

Ios 18—new apple overhaul reveals exciting iphone ai privacy feature.

Apple’s soon-to-launch iOS 18 software could include an exciting AI-based privacy feature as part of an overhaul of the Safari browser. The new iPhone feature, dubbed Web Eraser, allows you to browse the web while removing portions of the page, such as ads or other content you don’t want to see.

Web Eraser comes as part of a wider AI-based browser overhaul in iOS 18, according to Apple-focused website Apple Insider , which first reported the news.

Apple’s soon-to-launch iOS 18 software could include an exciting AI based privacy feature as part of ... [+] an overhaul of the Safari browser.

Currently being tested by the iPhone maker, the overhaul includes the advanced content blocking features enabled by Web Eraser, as well as UI tweaks and AI-powered Intelligent Search. The changes to Safari will be included in iOS 18 and macOS 15, according to the report, which cites “people familiar with the matter.”

What Web Eraser Does In iOS 18

From the looks of it, Web Eraser in iOS 18 is a pretty cool feature, building on privacy tools already built into the iPhone maker’s Safari browser. Specifically, it's “designed to allow users to remove, or erase, specific portions of web pages,” including banner ads, images, text or entire page sections.

Hundreds of Russian Troops Gathered Out In The Open. They Didn’t Know The Ukrainians Had Aimed Four ATACMS Rockets At Them.

Your best look yet at the new iphone 16, the richest person in every state 2024.

Apparently, Safari will remember your preferences so they aren’t limited to one specific browsing session. “When visiting a web page with previously erased content, Safari will inform the user that the page has been modified to reflect their desired changes. The browser will also give the user the option to revert changes and restore the webpage to its initial, unaltered state,” Apple Insider writes.

The new controls will be easy to access in the Safari Settings menu.

Exciting New iOS 18 Features Coming Soon

Web Eraser comes alongside multiple new AI-based iOS 18 features for your iPhone, most of which will be processed on the device , at least initially.

It looks like Intelligent Search will use Apple’s large language model Ajax to identify topics and key phrases within a web page.

Essentially, Web Eraser in iOS 18 is an ad blocking feature as offered by many companies, but it’s built into the Safari browser. It’s a great move for privacy—and ease of use since it’s ready made. However, it could create problems for publishers, who rely on web ads for their business revenue.

Apple of course, values privacy as one of its key marketing messages and iOS 18 seems to embrace that ethos wholeheartedly. Apple’s new iPhone operating system will launch in just over a month at its Worldwide Developers Conference and there’s a lot to look forward to for privacy-conscious users.

Trump meets privately with former GOP rival Ron DeSantis

Donald Trump and Ron DeSantis.

Former President Donald Trump met privately over breakfast with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Sunday, six sources said.

The meeting was described as "nice" and "friendly" by one of the sources, who added that DeSantis plans to help raise money for Trump. A separate source said the meeting was mutually agreed upon and arranged by Steven Witkoff, the chairman of a real estate company, who is a mutual contact of the two men.

"We had a great meeting yesterday," Trump said Monday on Truth Social. "The conversation mostly concerned how we would work closely together to MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN."

A Trump campaign official told NBC News that DeSantis reached out to Trump’s team through Witkoff two weeks ago to set up a meeting to “bury the hatchet” and discuss fundraising.

The meeting, which was first reported by The Washington Post , took place in Florida. DeSantis was golfing at Shell Bay Club, a golf club near Miami, where Trump joined him for breakfast.

DeSantis told donors and supporters during a private retreat in April that he planned to help raise money for Trump's campaign, NBC News first reported.

Just months ago, DeSantis slammed Trump during the bitter Republican primary contest, referring to him as a candidate running on personal issues.

"If he’s running for personal retribution, that is not going to lead to what we need as a country,” DeSantis in December in an interview on NBC's "Meet the Press."

"You got to be running for the American people and their issues, not about your own personal issues, and that is a distinction between us," he continued.

Separately, DeSantis has said that "the swamp was not drained" during Trump's term. He has also criticized Trump over his stance on abortion, telling a radio show that "all pro-lifers should know that he’s preparing to sell you out."

After he s uspend ed his campaign just days before the New Hampshire primary, DeSantis endorsed Trump, arguing that "we can’t go back to the old Republican guard of yesteryear, a repackaged form of warmed-over corporatism that Nikki Haley represents.”

Trump has not yet selected a running mate, but DeSantis has long said he would not seek the vice presidency.

“I don’t want to be VP. I don’t want to be in the Cabinet. I don’t want a TV show,” DeSantis said in January, before he dropped out. “I’m in it to win it.”

He put the message in starker terms the previous month, saying, “I can tell you under any circumstance, I will not accept” the vice presidential nomination.

I have a problem that is really annoying for me. I had teams on another device and everything was fine, i changed my laptop, installed the teams app but now it acts really weird and every time it opens a browser tab with teams instead of the teams desktop app. Does anybody know how to make Teams always open in the desktop app and not in browser ?

Hi  Bogdan Catalin Grabovschi,

May I know where do you encounter the issue and have a screenshot for it?

I suppose it is when you click on the meeting join link in Outlook, then it will open in your web browser first. If you open the scheduled meeting from the outlook calendar and click on Join Teams Meeting  instead , or open inside the Teams client you will be join the meeting directly without opening your web browser first. It is an expected behavior currently.

On another hand, if you concern about the meeting attendance in Teams, it is recommended that please vote the feature at  https://microsoftteams.uservoice.com/forums/555103-public/suggestions/39089752-join-a-meeting-without-going-through-the-browser  and leave your good ideas there. Microsoft will keep monitoring customers feedback and good ideas there, some features would be added into the product and services based on customers feedback in the future, and your good ideas will be very helpful for the dedicated develop engineers in Microsoft to improve their product and services, thanks.

Your understanding and patience will be highly appreciated.

Best Regards,

Thank you for your response, but unfortunately my problem with Teams is bigger than that.

I can't access the teams app at all.

This is a screenshot of it. After i enter my email again it takes me to my organisation's login page and after that a Chrome tab pops up with Teams. No trace of the app.

I would really love to use it as a separate app as before rather than in browser.

Hi Bogdan Catalin Grabovschi,

I hope that you are having a good day despite the issue that you are encountering with Microsoft teams.

You mentioned that you are able to sign into Teams web app with the same credential while your desktop app redirect you to a strange loop. Given this situation, I believe your account is ok, it is more likely related to the specific device. This can be caused by many factors.

May I know the version of your Teams client and the device operation system?

Please try the following to check the results:

- Uninstall Microsoft Teams.

- Delete ALL the entries in Control Panel's Credential Manager.

- Delete all "Team" folders within "Local" and "Roaming" in AppData folder.

- Restart the computer.

- Sign in office365 portal via https://portal.office.com

- Download the Teams desktop App.

- Install the desktop App.

After all the steps were done, restart Teams and check the results.

What happens when I send a meeting invitation from my calendar?

When a Microsoft Teams (free) user sends a calendar invitation, information pertaining to the organizer’s email will be made available to the recipients.  Invites include the name of the meeting, the organizer, start and end time, whether it's a reoccurring meeting (not available for SMS), location, and a link to join the meeting. Participants can start a conversation in the meeting chat before the meeting begins. SMS participants can reply within the SMS and the message posts in the meeting chat. These invitations may be sent via email or SMS, on behalf of the organizer.

For users that sign in with their email based Microsoft account (based on Outlook, Hotmail, MSN, etc.):

Email recipients will be shown the organizer’s Microsoft account email address. This email address will be shown to the organizer in the header when the calendar invitation is being prepared.

SMS / phone number-based recipients are sent an SMS, which contains an invite to join Microsoft Teams (free).

For users that sign in with a phone number-based Microsoft account, or sign in with an email based Microsoft account using non Microsoft email (for example, Gmail, Yahoo!):

Email recipients will be shown a system-generated email address created by Microsoft that is unique to the organizer.

Email accounts are shown in place of phone numbers or email based non-Microsoft account using Gmail, Yahoo!, etc. because calendar invitations are associated with email-based accounts/mailboxes. If a user's Gmail account is connected to their Google calendar, then Teams will use the invitee's Gmail account instead of the system-generated email address created by Microsoft.

What happens when I add a meeting invitation to my calendar?

When a Microsoft Teams (free) user adds a calendar event to their personal calendar, information pertaining to the recipient's email is available to other attendees of the meeting.

For users that have accepted a calendar invitation and added it to their personal calendar and that sign in with:

An email-based Microsoft account (based on Outlook, Hotmail, MSN, etc.), their Microsoft account email address will be visible to other attendees/meeting participants.

An email-based Microsoft account using non-Microsoft email (for example, Gmail, Yahoo!) or a phone number-based Microsoft account, a system generated email address created by Microsoft that is unique to the user will be visible to other attendees/meeting participants.

Email accounts are shown in place of phone numbers or email based non-Microsoft account using Gmail, Yahoo!, etc. because calendar invitations are associated with email-based accounts/mailboxes.

Users can sign in to Outlook.com to export their calendar invitations. Learn how to import and export Outlook email, contacts, and calendar .
