Tom Cruise’s Girlfriend History: From Nicole Kidman to Katie Holmes to Today

Tom Cruise has had a high-profile love life ever since launching his acting career in the '80s. Here's a complete breakdown of the 'Mission: Impossible' star's romantic history.

Tom Cruise ‘s love life has been closely followed for decades, ever since making his breakthrough in the 1983 classic  Risky Business . His romantic history consists of three famous marriages (all of which ended, coincidentally, when his wives were 33 years old) and a string of other high-profile romances. But between 2012-2020, Tom seemingly pumped the brakes on public romances.

However, there was renewed interest in the love life of one of Hollywood’s most famous bachelors after a new report surfaced in December 2020. It claimed that Tom was dating his co-star   Hayley Atwell  from Mission: Impossible 7 . In June 2022, another report came out that the pair broke up . In 2023, Tom reportedly moved on with model Elsina Khayrova . We have more information on that below — including Tom’s many other romances since the ’80s.

Melissa Gilbert

Melissa Gilbert , 59, who played Laura Ingalls on the NBC series Little House on the Prairie , claimed that she dated Tom in the early 1980’s. This was at the very beginning of his career! “Actually, when I dated him he was Tom Mapother still. It was when he first moved to Los Angeles and I think I was 16, maybe, or 17?,” Melissa said on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen   in 2017.

“I did not have sex with him,” Laura added. “We made out, but, honestly, there was no sex. He was a good kisser. But, you know, he was, like, a struggling, starving actor. I actually bought him his first set of dishes.” Melissa even reminisced on her friendship/past relationship with her fellow “Brat Pack” pal, Tom, in a throwback Instagram post shared in Oct. 2019.

Heather Locklear

Heather Locklear , 61, was never Tom’s girlfriend, but she did go on one (sort of) date with him. It didn’t go well, according to her recollection. The Melrose Place  star explained in a 2013 interview on Chelsea Lately  that they had both “auditioned for something” together, back when Tom “didn’t have friends” in Hollywood in the early ’80s. So, they went dancing.

“You know in ‘Risky Business’ where he does that dance in his underwear and does the splits? We were dancing at a club and he went into that. He starting doing the splits,” Heather said. “You just kind of stand there and don’t know what to do. Do you dance around him? So, I was like, ‘I’ll just sit down and you can.'”

“And that was the only date you had?,” Chelsea Handler then asked Heather, to which the actress said, “I think so.” Tom and Heather are pictured above together in 1981.

Rebecca De Mornay

Rebecca de Mornay and Tom played lovers in Tom’s breakthrough film, Risky Business , which came out in 1983. Their on-screen chemistry turned out to be real! Although Rebecca joked that Tom was “extremely annoying” at first, she admitted, “He came to grow on me because we wound up together for two and a half years after that film” in a 2018 interview with Celebrity Page .

Tom Cruise famously made Cher ‘s “Top 5” lovers list, which she revealed on  Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen  in 2013. “I had just the greatest lovers ever. Not a long list. It’s just a good list,” the 77-year-old singer had said.

Cher explained how she and Tom connected in a separate interview. “A bunch of people who were dyslexic were invited to the White House, and Tom and I are both dyslexic. We didn’t go out till way later, but there definitely was a connection there,” Cher told the  Mail on Sunday   in 2018. She added, “Though I don’t get what he does, that whole Scientology thing. I can’t understand it so I just… don’t.”

Mimi Rogers

It was during this relationship that Tom infamously joined the Church of Scientology, which he is a prominent figure in to this day. When Tom met actress Mimi Rogers , 67, she had been a few years divorced from Scientologist Jim Rogers . “I met her at a dinner party about a year ago, when I was developing Top Gun. She was dating a friend, and, uh, I thought she was extremely bright,” Tom recalled in a 1986 interview with Rolling Stone .

However, Mimi had a conflicting story. “I wasn’t seeing anybody, he wasn’t seeing anybody, and they thought, ‘These people should be going out with somebody — let’s see if they want to go out with each other.’ And we said, ‘Aw, what the heck. OK’,” Mimi told the Sun Sentinel  in 1987.

Tom sounded smitten in another Rolling Stone interview, which was published mere days before his split from Mimi was announced in 1990. “I’d never been in love before. Since I’ve been with her, it’s opened me up a lot. I think it’s helped me be a better actor. We live a lot of life together. We share everything,” he gushed, later adding, “I care about my wife more than anything in the world. She’s my best friend. I just really like being with her, you know? I love her.” The divorce was finalized in February 1990, three years after they got married.

Nicole Kidman

Tom Cruise moved on to his next marriage, which was with Moulin Rouge!  star Nicole Kidman , 55. They met on the set of their movie Days of Thunder , in which they played lovers, in 1990. By the end of the year, they were husband and wife. Tom and Nicole adopted two children amid their 11-year marriage : Isabella in 1992, and Connor in 1994.

During the marriage, Tom and Nicole also filmed another movie together, Eyes Wide Shut , in 1999. Nicole even looked back at their time filming together in a rare interview in Oct. 2020, telling the  New York Times , “We were happily married through that. We would go go-kart racing after those scenes. We’d rent out a place and go racing at three in the morning. I don’t know what else to say. Maybe I don’t have the ability to look back and dissect it. Or I’m not willing to.”

Nicole famously never joined Tom’s Church of Scientology, which even their children went on to be active members in. Tom and Nicole’s split was announced in Feb. 2001, and Tom filed for divorce two days later. To this day, the exes have minimal interactions with one another. “Tom has had little to no contact with Nicole in the 18 years since being married and that is fine by him,” a source close to Tom EXCLUSIVELY told HollywoodLife . “He really does not miss her much at all.”

Penélope Cruz

Tom took a break from the married life and started dating Penélope Cruz , 49, whom he met on the set of the movie Vanilla Sky  in 2000. They enjoyed a three-year relationship, which the former couple’s reps confirmed ended in 2004. “They remain good friends and still talk often. There is no other person involved,” Penelope’s spokesperson told PEOPLE at the time.

Katie Holmes

Enter Katie Holmes , who to date remains one of Tom’s most famous exes. Ironically, Katie , 44, she once told Seventeen Magazine   in 2004 that she “used to think that [she] was going to marry Tom Cruise,” which didn’t turn out to just be wishful thinking. The two came together the very next year.

Katie and Tom’s first public appearance as lovers happened in April of 2005. Tom was with the Dawson’s Creek star in Rome, where he was visiting to collect his David di Donatello Award for lifetime achievement. The very next month, Tom was jumping on Oprah Winfrey ‘s couch and proclaiming that he’s “in love” (to which Oprah said, “The boy is gone”).

The relationship quickly advanced. When Katie stepped onto the  Batman Begins  premiere in June of 2005, the actress revealed that she’s converting to Scientology (Tom’s religion) and her engagement to Tom was announced that very same month. By October, the couple was expecting, and in April of 2006 they welcomed their first child together, a daughter named Suri .

Katie and Tom tied the knot in Italy in Nov. 2006, and all seemed happy until June of 2012, when Katie filed for divorce. A settlement for custody of Suri was decided on a month later. A year afterwards, Tom admitted that he “didn’t expect” that divorce in an interview with German television network ProSieben.

Katie reflected on the time after the divorce in an April 2020 interview with   InStyle . “That time was intense. It was a lot of attention, and I had a little child on top of it. We had some funny moments out and about in public. So many people I didn’t know became my friends and helped us out, and that’s what I love about the city,” she said.

Hayley Atwell

Tom reportedly started dating Hayley Atwell  — whom you may have seen playing Peggy Carter in the Captain America  movies — in 2020, according to a report from The Sun that surfaced in Dec. of that year. Hayley and Tom filmed Mission 7: Impossible  together amid the pandemic.

“Tom and Hayley hit it off from day one,” a source told The Sun , who added, “Lockdown, and all the difficulties that came with it, brought them even closer and they’ve become fairly inseparable.” Tom and Hayley did not confirm this report, but he hasn’t confirmed any romances since his marriage to Katie, and on June 12, 2022, it was reported he and Hayley had split . It was the second reported split since back in Sept. 2021, they reportedly also called it quits but reconciled a short time later.

“Tom and Hayley’s relationship was genuine,” a source told The Sun . “In spite of some rumours to the contrary, it was never just for the cameras. Unfortunately it hasn’t worked out for them. They get on really well, and have fantastic chemistry, which is why they decided to quietly give the relationship another try earlier this year.”

In mid-2023, multiple outlets reported that Tom had quietly started dating the model and socialite.

Cruise has been world-famous since the 1980s, and in that time, he’s been linked to several different women. The interesting thing to note here, especially given Cruise’s desire for privacy, is that nearly all the women he’s dated are celebrities. Apparently, the Mission: Impossible actor likes to fraternize with other actors. Cruise’s latest girlfriend is literally his Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One co-star! However, before we jump ahead too quickly, let’s step back and begin at the very start.

Melissa Gilbert

Cruise’s relationship with Melissa Gilbert predates the name Cruise! Gilbert appeared on an episode of Watch What Happens Live in 2014, and she revealed that the actor was still going by his birth name when they first met. “I was maybe 16 or 17,” she recalled. “Actually, when I dated him, he was still Tom Mapother.”

Both Cruise and Gilbert were actors in 1981, but their situations could not have been more different. The former had just made his film debut in Endless Love (1981), and the latter was one of the cast members on the hit show Little House on the Prairie (1974-83). “He was like a struggling, starving actor, and I was working,” Gilbert added. “I actually bought him his first set of dishes.” They broke up within a few months.

Patti Scialfa

There are claims that Cruise romanced Heather Locklear and Rebecca de Mornay during the early 80s, but neither relationship has been confirmed by the people involved, so we felt like they shouldn’t warrant their own entry. However, what has been confirmed is the brief romance between Cruise and Patti Scialfa in 1985.

In a 1988 profile on Scialfa, People Magazine revealed that she dated Cruise before moving on to her future husband (and fellow E Street Band member) Bruce Springsteen. “Patti was hardly a nun before she met Bruce,” a source told People. “She doesn’t go out with accountants.” Scialfa and Springsteen have been married since 1991.

Tom Cruise and Cher dating already seems like the epitome of 80s pop culture, but it gets even better when you consider where they met: the 1985 wedding of Sean Penn and Madonna. These circumstances are so bizarre and hilarious that they sound made up. We digress. Cruise and Cher dated for a year, and while things didn’t last between them, there didn’t appear to be any hard feelings. Cher even listed Cruise as one of her top five lovers on a 2013 Watch What Happens Live episode.

Cher also marked the last time Cruise dated someone more famous than he was. Cher was one of the biggest pop stars on the planet and had just earned a Golden Globe nomination for her performance in Mask (1985). Cruise released Top Gun the following year, and things were never the same.

Mimi Rogers

Cruise married actress Mimi Rogers in 1987. They were together for three years, and BBC News theorized that Rogers was actually the person who introduced Cruise to the Church of Scientology. Either way, their romance was not built to last. Rogers cited intimacy issues, and then there were discrepancies in their respective careers.

Rogers’ career ran parallel with Cruise’s. She also made her film debut in 1981 and earned critical praise for her performances in Gung Ho (1986), Someone to Watch Over Me , and Street Smart (both 1987), but Cruise’s megastardom led to her being overlooked in the media. “No matter what the article is, it’s ‘Tom Cruise‘s wife’,” Rogers told People . She received a $4 million settlement from the divorce.

Nicole Kidman

Cruise quickly rebounded from the Rogers marriage and started dating Nicole Kidman. The two had met during the making of Days of Thunder (1990) and were already two years into their marriage by the time they made Far and Away (1992). Cruise and Kidman were one of the premiere celebrity couples of the decade, and their third collaboration, Eyes Wide Shut (1999), drew attention for its scandalous depiction of a marriage on the rocks.

Eventually, the issues bled into real life. Cruise and Kidman divorced in 2001 and released a joint statement citing “difficulties inherent in divergent careers.” They remain co-parents to their adopted children, Isabella Jane and Connor Antony.

Penelope Cruz

Cruise likes to rebound quickly, and he did it again while making Vanilla Sky (2001). He started dating co-star Penelope Cruz, who played his love interest in the film, and despite their shared fame, they maintained a relatively low profile. They dated until 2004 when their amicable split was chalked up to scheduling conflicts and a general acceptance that things had run their course.

At the time, Lee Anne DeVette, Cruise’s sister and publicist, told People : “They broke up at the end of January, and it’s amicable.” Cruz’s publicist, Robert Garlock, went as far as to state that the actors stayed in touch after splitting. “They remain good friends and still talk often,” he assured fans. “There is no other person involved.”

Katie Holmes

We wonder if you need a refresher on this one. Cruise went on The Oprah Winfrey Show to jump on the host’s couch and declare his love for Katie Holmes in one of the most cringe-inducing interviews ever. That being said, the couch jumping worked, and Cruise and Holmes were wed in 2005. They had a daughter named Suri the following year and remained steady tabloid fodder until their divorce in 2012.

Holmes told In Style that the attention of being married to Cruise was often overwhelming. “That time was intense,” she admitted. “It was a lot of attention, and I had a little child on top of it. We had some funny moments out and about in public.”

Hayley Atwell

Cruise’s love life has slowed down, but things picked up with Hayley Atwell during the making of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One . The Sun reports that Cruise and Atwell started dating in 2020, when Dead Reckoning Part One was going into production, and remained a couple until their split in May 2022.

While a reason for their official split was not given, Cruise and Atwell appear to be friendly with one another during the press junkets. Atwell even attended the premiere of Cruise’s film Top Gun: Maverick (2022) to show her support. Both are currently single.

Actor Curtis Armstrong — who had a small role in "Risky Business" — claimed in his 2017 memoir that Tom Cruise had an "intense affair" with the film's leading lady, Rebecca De Mornay, when they shot the 1983 comedy. At the time, she was involved with a different actor: the late Harry Dean Stanton, who was 36 years Tom's senior. During a 2013 appearance on Chelsea Handler's " Chelsea Lately " show, Heather Locklear said she only went out with Tom Cruise once — even though they were photographed together multiple times in the early '80s. The following day, a People magazine source threw cold water on the British tabloid's report, insisting that the romance rumors were "not true at all." Yet the rumors persisted, although there was a spattering of reports in the summer of 2021 claiming the action star and the British beauty had gone their separate ways.

Though fresh reports claimed they rekindled their romance in early 2022, The Sun published a story in June 2022 citing sources who said it was over again. "They get on really well, and have fantastic chemistry, which is why they decided to quietly give the relationship another try earlier this year. But what was working behind closed doors didn't work out so well when it was made public, and the fanfare around them as a couple exploded again," a source told the British tabloid. "They have now decided they are better as friends."

In July 2023, Hayley shot down the reports herself, telling the Independent the "weird [romance] rumors" felt "dirty" and "grubby" and that she views Tom and "M:I" franchise director Chris McQuarrie as "sort of two uncles," not love interests.

In May 2023, Tom Cruise once again got the rumor mill churning… this time with speculation that he'd fallen for a global pop star after he was seen chatting with Shakira at the 2023 Miami Formula One Grand Prix in Florida that month. In the early 1980s, young Thomas Cruise Mapother IV was an eager, fresh-faced young actor ready to take on Hollywood, and his first Tinseltown romance happened so early in his career that he had still yet to change his name . When Tom Cruise dated "Little House on the Prairie" actor Melissa Gilbert, she was the recognizable star. An Emmy-nominated showbiz veteran with years of acting experience under her belt by the time she was a teen, Gilbert later shared on " Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen " that she and Cruise went out when she was 16 or 17 years old. While there was no sex during their time together, Gilbert admitted that she and Cruise made out.

Gilbert and Cruise's relationship was short-lived, but it wasn't the last time the young stars would cross paths. Gilbert moved on to a relationship with Rob Lowe, Cruise's co-star in the 1983 teen drama "The Outsiders." Heather Locklear couldn't take his cringe dance moves

Tom Cruise was still a relatively unknown actor when he went on his one and only date with TV star Heather Locklear. She was simultaneously appearing on the hit TV shows "T.J. Hooker" and "Dynasty," and he was grabbing roles in movies like "Endless Love" and "Taps," when the pair hit the town in the early '80s. Clearly, she had the star power, but Cruise was on the brink of fame — and according to Locklear's recollection of their date, he was already making some moves that would make him a movie star.

During a 2013 appearance on "Chelsea Lately" (via the  Daily Mail ), Locklear claimed Cruise busted out some embarrassing dance moves at a club that left her bewildered. She likened them to the ones in his famous 1983 breakout movie "Risky Business," where he slides across a living room in nothing but a button-up shirt, briefs, and white socks. "You just kind of stand there and don't know what to do. Do you dance around him? It was weird. I just sat down," she said.

Locklear didn't pinpoint the exact year of their date, but it was definitely before Cruise was mega famous. Admittedly weirded out by the future movie star, Locklear didn't date Cruise again. And although "Risky Business" writer and director Paul Brickman credits himself for the movie's iconic dance scene, one can't help but wonder if one of Cruise's moves from his Locklear date actually made the final cut.

From friendzone to lovers with Rebecca De Mornay

Tom Cruise and his "Risky Business" co-star, Rebecca De Mornay, had a two-and-a-half-year relationship, but the pair didn't exactly hit it off at first. De Mornay later dished with a laugh to Celebrity Page , "I will say that I thought he was very annoying when we first started [filming]." Clearly, she got over Cruise-induced aggravation as they became more than just colleagues, but when they were doing press for the movie, the pair was publicized as merely being close pals. 

Although they played coy to the media, their co-star Curtis Armstrong's "Revenge of the Nerd" memoir (via The Hollywood Reporter ) later revealed that they were apparently openly and intensely engaging with each other during production. Their budding relationship was interrupted, however, by on-set appearances by De Mornay's then-beau, Harry Dean Stanton, who eventually got miffed enough about their affair that he went to confront Cruise about it, as De Mornay recalled to Vanity Fair . She admittedly left the "Paris, Texas" actor for Cruise, and the couple quickly became media darlings and paparazzi targets. They broke up just before Cruise began work on his 1986 blockbuster film "Top Gun."

She might have dumped him for Cruise, but De Mornay's relationship with Stanton proved to have staying power, while her time with Cruise stayed strictly in the past. Remembering the late Stanton, who died in 2017, De Mornay told Vanity Fair, "Harry Dean and I are best friends, and Tom and I don't talk."

His short-lived but influential marriage to Mimi Rogers

Tom Cruise's first marriage was to actor Mimi Rogers, and while short-lived, it proved to immensely impact Cruise's future. He and Rogers met at a dinner party when Cruise's 1986 blockbuster film "Top Gun" was in development. The couple married in a small, private ceremony in New York state in May 1987, with Cruise's "The Outsiders" co-star, Emilio Estevez, on best man duty. Rogers, a second-generation Scientologist, is credited for introducing Cruise to Scientology, per The Daily Beast , an organization whose influence would reportedly play a big part in his love life.

While they kept their relationship fairly low-key, rumors swirled in the press around their unsuccessful attempts at having children together, sparking years of speculation about Cruise's sexuality. He and Rogers quietly separated in 1989, and their split was officially announced the following year . Publicly, their divorce was partially chalked up Cruise's ascent into superstardom, with his focus on work leaving little time for love. Privately, alleged infidelity — including with his "Days of Thunder" co-star and future wife, Nicole Kidman — and reported meddling from Scientology officials  were apparently factors in their breakup. 

When asked about his first marriage in 1994, Cruise blurted to Vanity Fair, "It was a long time ago. I really don't think about it." Years later, Rogers admitted it took time for the exes to once again be on good terms. In 2001, she told People they were "nice and friendly," but added, "Between his life and mine, it's not like we have a lot of time to see each other."

Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman were the '90s it couple

When Tom Cruise saw Nicole Kidman in the 1989 Australian film "Dead Calm," he wanted to meet her. Shortly thereafter, they co-starred in 1990's "Days of Thunder," and one of the biggest celebrity relationships of that decade was off to a racing start. Cruise and Kidman reportedly hooked up while filming the movie, and after his divorce from Mimi Rogers was finalized, they tied the knot on Christmas Eve 1990. Dubbed "Hollywood's Most Romantic Couple" by People , Cruise shared with Vanity Fair that Kidman was his soul mate, and she told the publication, "He's amazingly romantic. He puts so much work into us." In 1992, they adopted their daughter, Isabella, and would welcome son Connor via adoption three years later.

In true power couple fashion, Cruise and Kidman continued to work together throughout their relationship. In addition to "Days of Thunder," they co-starred in the films "Far and Away" and "Eyes Wide Shut," the latter of which was an intense 15-month movie shoot that Cruise credited with making their marriage stronger. But a year after "Eyes Wide Shut" dropped, their marriage was over. Cruise filed for divorce in December 2000, citing "irreconcilable differences," per Entertainment Weekly . At the time, their rep denied Scientology was a reason for their split, but subsequent reports have alleged otherwise. 

When asked why they divorced by Vanity Fair in 2002, Cruise only said, "She knows why, and I know why. She's the mother of my children, and I wish her well."

He and Penélope Cruz gave tabloids plenty to talk about

Tom Cruise's next relationship was with Spanish actor Penélope Cruz. They met in 2000 on the set of "Vanilla Sky" — and Cruise was technically still legally married to Nicole Kidman when he was first romantically linked to Cruz in the summer of 2001. Cruise and Kidman's divorce was finalized on August 8 of that year, and it's since become a part of pop culture history thanks to an infamous photo of Kidman's alleged celebration. 

Cruise and Cruz soon caused a stir as they made their red-carpet debut at the premiere of her film "Captain Corelli's Mandolin." Cruz embraced Cruise's public support, telling  ABC News , "He came and shared [the spotlight] with me. It was special for me that he wanted to share it with me that way." Cruise didn't spare any romantic gestures, telling Marie Claire (via Entertainment Weekly ) in 2003 that he would surprise Cruz by cooking her favorite foods and drawing baths for whenever she arrived home. 

Despite any notions of domestic bliss, however, the relationship proved to be dramatic fodder for the tabloids. Things actually got so intense in the rumor department that Cruz sued Australian tabloid New Idea for defamation for peddling lies about the couple. Per Variety , the outlet published a retraction and issued an apology. Unfortunately, Cruz's legal victory didn't stop the gossip, and in 2004, she and Cruise amicably broke up after three years together. A source told People , "The relationship just ran its course and they decided not to be girlfriend and boyfriend anymore."

Age was just a number for Cher and Tom Cruise

One of Tom Cruise's more curious romantic trysts was with entertainment superstar Cher. 16 years his senior, Cher was already an established music and TV star and well into the movie star phase of her career when she met Cruise at Sean Penn and Madonna's 1985 Malibu wedding. Apparently, Cher's bright purple hair at the nuptials didn't spark an immediate love connection with the young actor, but she and Cruise reconnected later that year at a White House event that raised awareness around dyslexia, a learning disorder both stars have been diagnosed with. While they didn't hook up at the event, Cher later told the  Daily Mail , "We didn't go out till way later, but there definitely was a connection there."

Soon, however, Cruise was apparently making Cher say "whoa" in more ways than one. Cher previously revealed to Oprah Winfrey  that they'd even lived together in his apartment, saying, "He was so wonderful, and I was so crazy about him." Cher further praised Cruise on " Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen ," sharing that she considers him in the top five of her greatest lovers. 

For his part, Cruise has stayed mum on his romance with Cher , but there seems to be no animosity between them. Calling Cruise a "great, lovable guy," Cher further told Cohen on "WWHL" (via Page Six ), "It was pretty hot and heavy for a little minute."

His blink-and-you-missed-it fling with Sofía Vergara

Among many of Tom Cruise's romantic trysts was a brief interlude with a pre-"Modern Family" Sofía Vergara. When the two got together in the early '00s, Vergara's small roles in Hollywood movies like "Big Trouble," "The 24th Day," and "Soul Plane" weren't creating a path to superstardom. Cruise, who was having trouble finding a girlfriend, allegedly made Scientology honchos a list of potential love interests — and Vergara made the cut. 

According to Andrew Morton's book " Tom Cruise: An Unauthorized Biography ," the relatively unknown Vergara was set up to meet Cruise by Will Smith at a pre-Oscars bash in 2005. Hitting it off, Vergara began hanging out with Cruise, even bringing her son, Manolo, with her so that he could get to know his kids, Isabella and Connor. Things were seemingly moving forward in their relationship at an incredible clip, so much so that there were allegedly even talks of marriage mere weeks after they got together.

But for Vergara, the ever-looming presence of Scientology reportedly proved to be too much. When it was allegedly demanded that she convert to Scientology to continue their relationship, Vergara is said to have balked. A pal claimed to Morton, "She was fundamentally terrified by Scientology. She sincerely believed that she would be struck down by God and burn in hell if she joined." Needless to say, the Cruise-Vergara era was over before it had a chance to get started.

Nazanin Boniadi allegedly didn't pass the girlfriend audition

In the mid-'00s, Tom Cruise was looking for love, and — allegedly with the help of the Church of Scientology — he tried to find it with Iranian-born British actor Nazanin Boniadi. The "Homeland" star was already a Scientologist when she was reportedly chosen to become Cruise's girlfriend by the organization following a round of auditions in late 2004. According to a 2012 report by  Vanity Fair , though Boniadi wasn't initially told that her top-secret Scientology project was preparing her to meet Cruise, she hesitantly embraced the chance to be with him and decided to take the attention from the actor as a compliment.

While Cruise reportedly didn't hold back on the PDA, Boniadi was more reserved, which purportedly irritated the star. As their relationship progressed, Boniadi felt increasingly confined by the arrangement, which allegedly included confidentiality agreements and being controlled by Cruise and Scientology officials. Things came to a breaking point when Boniadi was at Cruise's Telluride, Colorado home and asked Church of Scientology head David Miscavige to repeat himself, allegedly leaving Miscavige insulted and Cruise appalled at the apparent slight. By January 2005, Boniadi and Cruise were done, with the actual breakup reportedly conducted not by Cruise, but by Scientology officials. 

Per the Independent , the Church of Scientology denied these claims. In 2012, Boniadi name-checked Cruise on an anti-Scientology diss track: "But we all know how it is, there ain't no road to freedom / It's a blind alley, like Kirstie Alley / Travolta and Cruise, but we ain't no fools."

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes' marriage defined an era

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes' famous romance defined the celebrity-obsessed pop culture of the mid-'00s. Holmes was apparently one of many women who allegedly auditioned to be Tom Cruise's girlfriend , and she seemingly nailed it by admitting her childhood crush on him. Cruise and Holmes took things public in 2005 during the whirlwind publicity tours for their movies "The War of the Worlds" and "Batman Begins." Cruise jumping on Oprah Winfrey's couch and sparring with Matt Lauer about the history of psychiatry? It all happened that spring and summer amidst the heat of the "TomKat" romance. Less than two years after meeting, Cruise and Holmes would welcome their child, Suri, and get married in an extravagant Italian ceremony that reportedly cost $3 million.

Once the dust settled on their marriage, it seems all was not what it seemed to be. Confined by their intense fame, Holmes admitted to Vanity Fair reporter Maureen Orth in 2012, "Oh, we don't go outside very much," and Scientology was reportedly a constant presence in their private lives. Holmes filed for divorce that June, allegedly blindsiding Cruise with the move . Thanks to help from her attorney father, Holmes had a prenuptial agreement in place, and their divorce was finalized in less than two weeks. 

Of her split from Cruise, Holmes — who was awarded primary custody of Suri — told InStyle  in 2020, "That time was intense. It was a lot of attention. ... We had some funny moments out and about in public." To say the least, Katie!

Was his alleged romance with Hayley Atwell impossible?

After his headline-grabby divorce from Katie Holmes in 2012, Tom Cruise kept his personal life mostly to himself throughout much of the 2010s. Cruise's post-Holmes filmography was mostly action-hero fare, including installments of his "Jack Reacher" and "Mission: Impossible" franchises. His public persona became less centered around buoyant displays of affection, as it had in the '00s, and more about Cruise's death-defying film stunt work. But by late 2020, Cruise was rumored to have a new love interest in Hayley Atwell, his "Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning" co-star.

The Sun reported that Cruise and Atwell had bonded while filming in both the U.K. and Rome, having become close during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns. The following July, the duo took in Wimbledon together, further sparking romance chatter in the media. By September 2021, however, Cruise and Atwell reportedly called it quits, taking the highway to the friendzone. However, they apparently got back together in early 2022, but split up yet again shortly after they both attended the May 2022 premiere of "Top Gun: Maverick." A source cited by  The U.S. Sun partially blamed public scrutiny for the breakup, claiming, "What was working behind closed doors didn't work out so well when it was made public, and the fanfare around them as a couple exploded again. They have now decided they are better as friends."

But were Cruise and Atwell ever actually an item or just a convenient tabloid topic? In May 2023, Atwell flatly denied they were ever romantically involved to Country & Town House .

Tom Cruise and Shakira sparked rumors at the race track

In May 2023, Tom Cruise was linked to singing superstar Shakira after the duo was spotted at a Formula 1 Grand Prix together in Miami. A source dished to Page Six  about the possibility of a love connection and claimed, "He is extremely interested in pursuing her. There is chemistry." The insider further hinted that perhaps Shakira "need[ed] a soft pillow to land on, and that could be Tom" after her dramatic breakup with soccer star Gerard Piqué. 

Sure, Cruise and Shakira chatted it up at an event, and he even reportedly gifted her flowers — but was it the start of a beautiful relationship? According to sources in Shakira's camp, the answer was a resounding "no." While insiders couldn't directly speak to Cruise's alleged floral fixation for the singer, they told TMZ , "She's very much single. ... Shakira's just not interested in dating right now." The sources also clarified that both Cruise and Shakira were merely guests of Formula 1 superstar racer Lewis Hamilton, hence being spotted together. 

Shakira's hips don't lie, but perhaps the tabloids sometimes do.

Elsina Khayrova

In December 2023, it was reported that the actor had been seen “canoodling” socialite Elsina Khayrova. The 36-year-old is the daughter of a prominent Russian member of parliament and ex-wife of diamond-trading oligarch, Dmitry Tsetko.

They reportedly met each other’s kids and were seemingly close-knit until late Feb 2024, when insiders claimed that the two decided to cool things down . As of March 9, 2024, they seemed to have broken things off after she turned down his alleged proposal.

Hayley Atwell

In late 2020, The Sun reported that Tom Cruise and his Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One co-star Hayley Atwell were secretly dating. Many conflicting reports came in the next two years, some claiming they broke up, were never together, and even reconnected in early 2022. However, Atwell set the record straight and said nothing happened between the two!

Annabelle Wallis

Annabelle Wallis may be 20 years Cruise’s junior, but that didn’t stop romance rumors from springing up left and right when it was announced in Spring 2016 that these two were starring in The Mummy together. Cruise was apparently so smitten with Wallis that he sent her flowers ahead of filming and asked her personally to audition for the part.

Many reports came in that Cruise was smitten with her, saying she’d be “perfect to be his next wife.” But Kirby, who also starred in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One and will star in its successor, denied the rumors.

“The most disconcerting thing was the people I didn’t think would believe it, did, and they were texting my boyfriend, asking, ‘Are you OK?’ I don’t think they believe anything they read now because you just can’t,” she told Marie Claire UK . “None of it is real. Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz starred in two films together, Vanilla Sky and Knight and Day , so, obviously, they were madly in love (we speculate, of course). Of course, nothing ever came of the rumors , and Diaz claims they were nothing more than friends.

Back in 2013, Tom Cruise and Laura Prepon were seen dining together in Los Angeles, and almost a year later, Page Six reported that the duo had been “secretly dating” for months, but both of their representatives denied this.

Rumors went into overdrive when photos of Tom Cruise and Olga Kurylenko kissing hit the internet, but Kurylenko quickly denied the rumors and claimed the photos were from their movie  Oblivion .

Yolanda Pecoraro

Right after his breakup with Penelope Cruz, Tom Cruise allegedly had his eyes on Yolanda Pecoraro, who was around 23 years younger than him. It’s alleged that the Church of Scientology had their eyes on her to be his next wife, per Nicki Swift . He was reportedly “head over heels” for her and allegedly paid for her Scientology courses. Their affair only lasted a couple months in the early 2000s.

Model Abbey Lee and Tom Cruise were linked to one another back in 2012 after a raunchy photoshoot, and per Daily Mail , he called her to arrange a meeting back in 2017. The report said, “When he (Tom) found out he was coming to Australia to promote his new film The Mummy, the first people he called was Abbey to arrange a catch-up.”

Katie Holmes

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes ‘ whirlwind romance started in 2005, and within two months, they were ready to tie the knot. When Holmes first got into Hollywood, she told Seventeen in a now-deleted interview , “I think every little girl dreams about (her wedding). I used to think I was going to marry Tom Cruise.”

The pair welcomed their child Suri Cruise on Apr 18, 2006, and later married on Nov 18, 2006, in Italy. Soon after getting together, Holmes converted to Scientology for him. According to Foreign Policy , Vergara received a call from Cruise, where he gave her an invitation to his upcoming birthday party. He allegedly showered her with gifts, and the two seemed to really hit it off. But he allegedly tried to convert her to the Church of Scientology, and she refused. 

In 2023, it was even rumored that Cruise had his sights set on Vergara once again after her split from Joe Manganiello but that speculation never amounted to anything. 

Nazanin Boniadi

So Nazanin Boniadi and Tom Cruise didn’t technically date at first, but a 2012 Vanity Fair article claimed the Church of Scientology tried to set the Iranian-born actress up to be Cruise’s wife before Katie Holmes. The Church allegedly auditioned her to be his wife across several months before they ended the brief romance. Boniadi reportedly left the Church soon after.

Penélope Cruz

One of Cruise’s more high-profile co-star romances was with his former co-star Penelope Cruz. Cruise and Cruz met on the set of their film Vanilla Sky in 2000 and began dating in 2001. They amicably split after three years together and reportedly remain friends. 

Nicole Kidman

Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise met on the set of the hit film Days of Thunder and tied the knot a year later on Christmas Eve in 1990 in Telluride, Colorado.

They starred in two more films together, and even adopted two children together named Isabella Jane in 1992 and a son named Connor in 1995. 

She joined the Church of Scientology for him but left in 1997, and even got him to leave for a brief period of time, according to The Daily Beast . This later caused a strain in their relationship, and she was reportedly blindsided when he filed for divorce from her in 2001.

Before Kidman became the superstar she is today, she told Marie Claire per Goalcast that she felt like a trophy at the beginning of their marriage. “I thought, I don’t deserve to be here. We would go to the Oscars, and I would think, I’m here to support [Tom]. I felt it was my job to put on a beautiful dress and to be seen and not heard.”

According to Tom Cruise and Rebecca DeMornay’s former Risky Business co-star Curtis Armstrong’s book Revenge of the Nerd , he alleged the two had an “intense affair,” which DeMornay later confirmed in an interview with Celebrity Page in 2018. Rob Lowe shares awesome ‘80s pic from double date with Tom Cruise

This picture will “bLowe” your mind.

Rob Lowe posted an old photo on Instagram Thursday featuring him and Tom Cruise on a double date during the Decade of Decadence.

“Double date 1980s style! I think this might’ve been the premiere of ‘The World According to Garp,’” he captioned the picture , which features Cruise standing next to actor Michelle Meyrink and Lowe next to former “Little House on the Prairie” star Melissa Gilbert.

Cruise rocks a preppy ‘80s style, with what appears to be a blue wool sport coat and tie and bangs, while Lowe goes for a more brash look in a pink shirt, white jacket and white tie.

Interestingly, Meyrink appeared with Lowe and Cruise in ‘The Outsiders.” She also had roles in other popular ‘80s movies like “Revenge of the Nerds,” “Real Genius” and “Valley Girl.”

While Lowe wrote the shot was from “The World According to Garp,” it appears the pic may have been snapped at a screening of the 1982 TV movie “In The Custody of Strangers,” which featured Emilio Estevez, who starred alongside Lowe and Cruise in “The Outsiders.”

The picture definitely got a reaction.

“You sure this wasn’t your prom?” Lowe’s brother, Chad Lowe, commented, while Jennifer Aniston liked the post.

Lowe has previously talked about Cruise, once sharing the story of how the future “Top Gun” star lost his cool when he had to share a hotel room with Lowe while they auditioned for “The Outsiders.”

After landing roles in the movie, their accommodations became a little sparser when they had to sleep in a stranger’s basement while shooting the project in Oklahoma.

“It’s Francis Ford Coppola, the director, who directed ‘The Godfather’ and ‘Apocalypse Now’ ... and in his effort to make us more authentic as greasers, as sort of tough Tulsa, sort of wrong side of the tracks guys, (he) found a bunch of different actual greasers who were now grown-up adults and made us go spend the night and live with them,” he said on “The Kelly Clarkson Show” last year .

“Tom and I ended up in the basement in two cots and we’re like, ‘We don’t know these people,’” Lowe added.

“I mean, who vetted them? Really? Do you think Francis Ford Coppola spent a lot of time vetting these people? I can tell you, he didn’t. He was with an espresso and watching some fancy Fellini movie and went, ‘Yeah, yeah that sounds great,’ and went back to his espresso.”

Cruise's career took off  almost  as fast as his love life when he got to Hollywood.

The  Little House on the Prairie  star and future SAG president met Cruise when "he was a struggling starving actor, and I was working. I actually bought him his first set of dishes." She told Andy Cohen on  Watch What Happens Live! in 2014 that they did not have sex (she was "16, maybe, or 17" at the time), but "we made out"—and he was a good kisser.

Heather Locklear

The actress scored her breakout role in  Dynasty right around the time Cruise made his big-screen debut in  Taps— and naturally, the fresh-faced stars went on a date in the early '80s after meeting at an audition.

Locklear, a Los Angeles native, later described it to Chelsea Handler as more of a favor she did for the new guy in town. The kid didn't lack for confidence, though. "You know in  Risky Business where he does that dance in his underwear, and he does the splits?" Heather recalled. "We were dancing at a club and he went into that, he started doing the splits. And I, you—" She feigned looking startled. "You just kinda stand there and don't know what to do. Do you dance around him? So I was like, 'I'll just sit down and you can [do you thing].'"

Rebecca De Mornay

More impressed by his moves was his  Risky Business  co-star, whom he started dating after the racy romance, with its iconic dance scene, hit theaters in August 1983. In October of that year, De Mornay told  People that she didn't have a boyfriend, but one of the reasons she liked Cruise so much was, "I think he is an innocent and that makes me feel good."

Sean Penn , meanwhile, recalled to Rolling Stone   going out with Cruise not long after  Risky Business came out and witnessing the actor tell a woman who tried to chat him up at the club, "'I have a girlfriend I'm in  love with!'"

"He really is a pure person," De Mornay said when they were together, also per RS . "There's something earnest and virtuous about him that's quite rare. There's definitely something different about kids who come from broken homes. They have this sort of  searching  quality, because you're searching for love and affection, if you've been robbed of a substantial amount of time with your parents. I think that's true of Tom."

They maintained their relationship long distance while he was in London filming the action fantasy  Legend , but broke up not long after he returned to the U.S. to shoot  Top Gun . 

"Relationships are hard," Cruise told Rolling Stone in 1986. "You have to know when you're going to be in a different place from someone else, you have to have the strength to separate. People are more prone to stay together for the security, which is something in my life that I have really not done, in relationships or even in business. If something's not working, you've got to face it and move on."

Asked about settling down, he said, "I don't know if I could get married. Right now, in my present state of mind, I don't believe so. I need a lot of space for myself and my work. You can't say, 'Okay, let's keep that thought—I'll be back to you in a couple of months when I finish this.' But I do enjoy being in a relationship."

They would've been a hard couple to miss, such as when they ran into each other in 2002 at the 1st Annual Entertainment Industry Foundation "Love Rocks" Concert, but it wasn't until around 2008 that the entertainment icon opened up about her mid-'80s fling with Cruise.

"I was crazy about him," Cher told Oprah Winfrey . Reminiscent of what De Mornay said about him being an innocent, the singer recalled, "He was shy. He said he felt like such a boob in school and nobody talked to him. We went on a date once for dinner in a New York restaurant and the waitress was from his old school. He told me she never talked to him back in school, but now he was recognized he got all her attention. It could have been a great big romance because I was crazy for him."

On  Watch What Happens Live! in 2013, Cher said Cruise definitely made her "top five" list of lovers in life. "It was a long, long time ago and neither one of us ever talked about it and I don't know why," she told Andy Cohen. "When we were together he was such a private person. He always has been until lately. He didn't mention it and I didn't mention it. I loved him though, he was amazing."

Mimi Rogers

According to Cruise, he met the Gung Ho  actress in 1985 at a dinner party while he was developing Top Gun . She was dating a friend of his at the time, but ultimately they got together. Though he didn't think he was ready for marriage in the summer of 1986, they quietly tied the knot on May 9, 1987, in upstate New York. Emilio Estevez was Cruise's best man. His mother, Mary Lee South, told  People her new daughter-in-law was "top notch."

Having previously been married to Scientology counselor Jim Rogers, Mimi's the one who's said to have turned Cruise on to the religion. "She took him under her wing,"  Tom Cruise Unauthorized author Wensley Clarkson told  Entertainment Weekly in 2000. (Rogers, meanwhile, has since cut ties with Scientology.)

They announced they were divorcing in January 1990. 

"Is that the story, that I was bored with that child and threw him over, chewed him up and spat him out?" Rogers fired back at Playboy in 1993 when asked why the marriage ended. "Well, here's the real story. Tom was seriously thinking of becoming a monk. At least for that period of time, it looked as though marriage wouldn't fit into his overall spiritual need. And he thought he had to be celibate to maintain the purity of his instrument." She added pointedly, "My instrument needed tuning."

As for the other rumors being flung about, that he had become too big a star, or their six-year age difference proved too impenetrable, a then 45-year-old Rogers told the U.K. Telegraph   in 2001, "The stardom wasn't really a problem. What did annoy me, though, was the age thing. Some of the tabloids brought it up all the time, and exaggerated the gap between Tom and me. Every six months they seemed to add a year to my age. If Tom and I were still married, the tabloids would probably have me in my sixties by now."

Nicole Kidman

After meeting during casting of the racing drama  Days of Thunder , he proposed as soon as his divorce from Mimi Rogers was finalized, and the Australian actress married Cruise on Christmas Eve in 1990.

"He basically swept me off my feet," Kidman recalled to Vanity Fair  in 2002 . "I fell madly, passionately in love. And as happens when you fall in love, my whole plan in terms of what I wanted for my life—I was like, 'Forget it. This  is it.' I was consumed by it, willingly. And I was desperate to have a baby with him. I didn't care if we were married. That's what I wish I'd done."

They adopted two children,  Isabella  and Connor , and starred in two more films together, the period epic  Far and Away and the erotic thriller  Eyes Wide Shut , which they admitted later was an extremely intense shoot, made all the more devastating by director Stanley Kubrick 's death before the film was finished. They also weathered the dooziest of rumors, from one that they were both gay and the marriage was a cover to a report that they needed a coach for the sex scenes in  Eyes Wide Shut (the couple successfully sued over both stories).

"Our marriage is stronger because of it. And our friendship is deeper," Cruise said about their final film experience together. 

"All I can say is that I hope we are together when we are 80," Kidman told Talk in 2000. "I can't say we will be, but I will be so devastated if we are not."

So consider her blindsided by the timing when Cruise filed for divorce months later. "Citing the difficulties inherent in diverging careers which constantly kept them apart, they concluded that an amicable separation seemed best for both of them at this time," their longtime rep said on Feb. 5, 2001, in announcing the split.

Even then, Kidman's lack of attachment to Scientology and her reluctance to raise their kids that way was named as a major factor in their split (her rep told People  religion had "nothing to do with this"). Connor and Isabella were still Scientologists as of at least 2013.

Asked why their marriage ended, Cruise told  Vanity Fair in October 2001, "She knows why, and I know why. She's the mother of my children, and I wish her well. And I think that you just move on. And I don't say that lightly. I don't say that with anything. Things happen in life, and you do everything you can, and in every possible way, and there's a point at which you just sometimes have to face the brutal reality."

Penélope Cruz

After meeting on the set of 2001's trippy  Vanilla Sky , the Spanish actress dated Cruise for three years, though they were apart a majority of the time for work.

They made their public debut as a couple at the August 2001 premiere of Cruz's film  Captain Corelli's Mandolin . "He came and shared it with me," she said on Good Morning America soon after. "It was special for me that he wanted to share it with me that way."

Cruise was married when they were shooting  Vanilla Sky , but Cruz insisted they didn't get together until later. "There's nothing to hide and it's a good thing," she said. (She would say years later , "I've never fallen in love with someone I'm working with. It's always been afterwards. If something becomes friendship, then maybe months later it becomes something else, but you can never know. It's always a mystery. You can't plan those things.")

"I'm very, very happy with my relationship," Cruise had told  People in the summer of 2003, also denying that they were engaged. The relationship wasn't without its legal drama, however, as Cruz ended up securing damages and a retraction  from an Australian tabloid in June 2003 over a story claiming her impending marriage to Tom was postponed because she had an affair. 

They split up in January 2004 and alerted the world to that fact two months later. "The relationship just ran its course and they decided not to be girlfriend and boyfriend anymore," a source told People   at the time. Cruz's rep denied that Scientology played a role, saying that the actress, while not a Scientologist, had found the church courses she took "beneficial."

Sofia Vergara

The  Modern Family star is said to have briefly dated Cruise during a period of time after he broke up with Cruz when the actor really wanted a potential partner who could embrace Scientology (those said to be involved with Cruise's dating process have denied that was the case).

When an interviewer from the Daily Beast noted in 2011 that he hadn't heard too much about what it was like to date Cruise, Vergara reportedly laughed hysterically and exclaimed, "Let's keep it that way! I don't want to talk about that!"

Scarlett Johansson

Like Vergara, the  Avengers star reportedly wasn't into Cruise's scene. They were never photographed out on a date together, but looked perfectly cordial at an Ambassadors for Humanity gala honoring Bill Clinton and benefiting the Shoah Foundation in February 2005.

Nazanin Boniadi

According to a 2012 report in Vanity Fair (the particulars of which were denied by the Church of Scientology), the Iranian-born actress, who would go on to roles in  How I Met Your Mother ,  Scandal ,  Homeland  and more, quietly dated Cruise between October 2004 and January 2005 before it became obvious to the actor and the church that she wasn't right for him.

Per  VF , for their first date (a group outing), Cruise arranged for a private tour of the Empire State Building, followed by dinner at Nobu and ice skating at the rink at Rockefeller Center, which was closed to the public for the occasion.

Boniadi was already a Scientologist when she was allegedly recruited to date Cruise, that being a huge part of the appeal, but she later left the church. (The church called the mission to hook Boniadi and Cruise up a "phantom project that never existed.")

"I'd rather not talk about that. It's something that I'm not happy to..." Boniadi told The New York Post in 2013 , trailing off when asked about Cruise. "Like I said, I have so many positive things happening in my life, it's a shame not to talk about that."

Katie Holmes

After a whirlwind courtship (but over a decade after the  Dawson's Creek star crushed on him as a kid) punctuated by Cruise's epic declaration of love for Holmes on Oprah Winfrey 's couch in May 2005, the couple welcomed daughter Suri in April 2006. Annie Leibovitz  shot Suri's public debut, the October 2006 cover of  Vanity Fair . TomKat tied the knot at a castle in Italy on Nov. 18, 2006.

"People are going to do what they're going to do," Cruise told MTV News in June 2005, talking about the public reaction to his reaction to being in love. "Here's the thing, you can't think about it in terms of what people are going to do or say. It's 'I want to share my life with this woman. This woman is exceptional, she's special, she's extraordinary and I have great respect for her.' It's someone who's saying 'I've got nothing to hide, I'm happy.' I'm happy, man!"

Asked about the possibility of acting together, he added, "I'd love to work with her, she's a great actress. I will work with her someday, no question."

Holmes filed for divorce in June 2012 and, thanks to their reportedly incredibly detailed prenup drafted by Martin Holmes , Katie's divorce attorney father, all was settled within two weeks. Again, religion was rumored to be the big sticking point, and a source told  Us Weekly that Holmes had reached out to Nicole Kidman for support during the marriage's final days.

Aside from Cruise's extremely public outings with Suri to places like Disney World, Holmes was the one who was most often spotted with Suri. In December 2013, Cruise accepted a settlement  in the $50 million defamation claim he brought against Bauer Media over a  Life & Style story that claimed he had more or less abandoned his daughter.

"I don't want that moment in my life to define me, to be who I am," Holmes told People in October 2014, referring to her marriage to Cruise. "I don't want that to be what I'm known as. I was an actor before, an actor during and an actor now."

Cameron Diaz

Hot on the heels of his divorce from Katie Holmes, Cruise was rumored to be dating his  Knight & Day co-star. 

The rumor wasn't true , but the pair did get along swimmingly on the set of the humorous action thriller.

Asked how she spent her 40th birthday (in a deposition for his suit against Bauer Media, Cruise had denied attending her b-day party in London in August 2012, though there were pictures of them taken that night), Diaz later explained on  The Graham Norton Show , "I happened to bump into Penélope Cruz, Javier [ Bardem ], Tom and his son in a hotel and joined them for dinner. At midnight I said, 'I'm 40!' so we took pictures and then said, 'Goodnight, see you later, blah, blah, blah,' and I haven't seen him since.

A rumor caught fire in 2014 that these two were dating, and their new romance was all anyone on the set of  Orange Is the New Black could talk about. That turned out to be vehemently untrue , with reps on both sides denying it.

"It's just so funny that, when people don't know, they just make stuff up, [like] apparently I'm dating Tom Cruise right now," Prepon told She Knows . "And apparently he doesn't want me doing [ OITNB ] because I portray a lesbian and I'm a Scientologist."

She added, "This is false. Where are they even getting this stuff? It's unbelievable to me."

In October 2016,  Us Weekly reported that Cruise had had a girlfriend for several months, an unnamed British woman whom the actor was said to be serious about. "Very normal and pretty" was how a source described her.

Cher Opens Up About Her Famous Past Lovers, Including Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer

The 72-year-old singer also gets candid about her face lift.

Cher believes in love after love. 

The 72-year-old music icon gets candid about her past relationships in a new tell-all interview with the  Mail on Sunday . The Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again star first touches on her romance with actor Tom Cruise, who she met in 1985 at Sean Penn and Madonna’s wedding and started dating that same year. 

After their initial introduction, the pair reunited at a White House event, and Cher recalls how the two bonded. “A bunch of people who were dyslexic were invited to the White House, and Tom and I are both dyslexic,” she says. "We didn’t go out till way later, but there definitely was a connection there.”

She adds that she’s still friends with Cruise, noting, "Though I don’t get what he does, that whole Scientology thing. I can’t understand it so I just… don’t.”

Back in June, Cher played "Spill Your Guts or Fill Your Guts"   on  The Late Late Show With James Corden,  where she was asked to name her top four best lovers in addition to Cruise, who she’d named previously. Refusing to do so, she opted to eat a dried caterpillar instead. 

However, she isn't shy about discussing her love life in this most recent interview.

Cher also dated Cruise's Top Gun co-star, Val Kilmer, from 1982 to 1984, and from what she describes, the actor is a great kisser. “When we kissed, I thought my head would shoot right off my body," she remembers.

As for KISS rocker Gene Simmons, who she dated from 1977 to 1980, Cher says he's “the one I’m crazy about,” but credits David Geffen, who she was with from 1973 to 1974, for helping to keep her off the “street.” 

She goes on to call Rob Camilletti, a bagel baker who is 18 years her junior that she dated from 1986 to 1989, "possibly the one true love of my life.”

Cher isn’t quite as complimentary when it comes to her former husbands. 

The chart-topping singer spoke of the late Gregg Allman, who she was married to from 1975 to 1979, saying, "It was really intense, but it’s hard to have a marriage with someone who’s doing drugs… Drugs and I were just never meant to be together. I thought it was stupid and still do. I saw too many people where it ruined their lives. It ruined Gregory’s life.”

As for the late Sonny Bono, who Cher was married to from 1969 to 1975, she says he treated her “more like a golden goose” than a wife, adding, “We had a weird relationship. I don’t expect anybody to understand it.” 

These days Cher is single and admits that she finds it hard to date. 

"Not this week. I’m still on the lookout,” she teases. "The problem I have with all the boyfriends lately is that I don’t want to go any place with them because you can’t keep a relationship going in this kind of goldfish bowl, where everything you do and every picture you have taken will be on Instagram. There’s no way to keep something special."

Cher also doesn't shy away from discussing her plastic surgery, which she’s been open about in the past. "Yes, I’ve had a face lift, but who hasn’t?” she quips.

The rumors were debunked when a source close to Jorge told People they were only friends enjoying a night out together. Jorge also shared with the insider in question that she thought Cruise was a nice guy.

It's been 38 years since the Hollywood movie classic "Top Gun" premiered, and Tom Cruise is still in fighting shape.

Ahead of the film's anniversary on May 16, the 61-year-old actor took to Instagram to share a series of photos that feature behind-the-scenes snapshots of him and various cast members on the set of the original film and the 2022 sequel, "Top Gun: Maverick." 

And Cruise proved he's still in action-hero shape while enjoying a beach day this week in Mallorca, Spain. Cruise, who has been filming the latest "Mission: Impossible" film , flashed his toned abs while taking a dip in the ocean.

In March, Jerry Bruckheimer – the producer for both the original "Top Gun" and "Top Gun: Maverick" – revealed that a third installment may be in the works.

"We're working on ['Top Gun 3']," he told People magazine. "We pitched Tom a story he liked. But he's a very in-demand actor, and he's got a lot of movies lined up, so we have to wait and see."

While it's up in the air, "Top Gun: Maverick" actress Jennifer Connelly, who portrayed Penelope "Penny" Benjamin in the film, is on board if it does happen. 

"I'll be there. I'm ready," Connelly told "Entertainment Tonight."

Among the same posts, Cher, who was 76 at the time, further addressed the couple’s four-decade age gap in a now-deleted message, which read: "LOVE DOESN'T KNOW MATH, IT SEES ❤️ ❤️."

The “If I Could Turn Back Time” singer also went on to refer to a lesson she learned from Sogyal Rinpoche, a late Tibetan Buddhist teacher and author, saying that he told her, “Some people meet, others recognize.”

Elsewhere in her initial posts about Edwards, Cher told a fan that the rapper and music exec has been treating her like a "queen," and said that "everyone in my family has" met him.

After learning that Cher was dating Edwards, fans also delved into his last relationship with model Amber Rose — with whom he shares a son, Slash — learning that the three-year romance ended in August 2021 with Rose appearing to accuse Edwards of cheating on her with at least 12 different people. He later admitted to infidelity in an Instagram Live.

So, after a fan replied to Cher’s hard launch with concern about the music exec’s “intentions,” the singer clapped back, writing that she “WASN'T BORN YESTERDAY.” “What I know for sure, there are no guarantees,” she wrote in a now-deleted post. “Anytime you make a choice, you take a chance. I've always taken chances ... it's who I am."

In another now-deleted post, the Moonstruck star said: "BABE ENGLISH IS MY FIRST LANGUAGE. I'M IN ❤️ NOT BLINDED BY IT. KNOW WHAT I KNOW ... SMOKE DOESN'T ALWAYS MEAN 🔥."

In a follow-up post, she also said will not defend her and Edwards’ relationship, adding, “Haters are gonna hate … Doesn't matter that we're happy and not bothering anyone."

While appearing on The Kelly Clarkson Show in December 2022, Cher opened up about her and Edwards’ relationship, telling host Clarkson that " on paper, it's kind of ridiculous .”

"But in real life, we get along great,” she said of the music exec. “He's fabulous. And I don't give men qualities that they don't deserve.”

Listing more qualities of Edwards she admires, she added: "He's very kind, very smart, he's very talented, and he's really funny — and I think he's quite handsome.”

Cher Says 'Older Men'; Don't Want to Date Her

During the same Kelly Clarkson Show appearance, Cher repeated her claim that only younger men want to be with her, telling Clarkson that she would've "never had a date" if she exclusively went for older guys.

"Older men just didn't like me all that much," she told the host. "Do you know what I mean? I have had a couple boyfriends that were hovering around my age, but they just didn't like me for some reason."

"And maybe younger men don't care if you're funny or outrageous and want to do stupid things, and you have the strong personality," she said, adding: "I'm not giving up my personality for anybody, OK?"

For Christmas 2022, Edwards gifted the pop icon an engagement-like diamond ring , Cher revealed by sharing a photo of the massive sparkler.

"THERE R NO WORDS," she wrote of the present.

A couple months after the rapper gifted Cher the ring, a source confirmed that though "very much in love," the couple was not engaged .

The insider said the pair were inseparable at a recent pre-Grammys party , noting that they "held hands all night and were very lovey-dovey and kissing often."

"They're not talking marriage or anything like that, but they are exclusive and serious," the source added.

Cher Says Edwards Taught Her It's 'Never Too Late' to Find Love

In October 2023, over a year after she and Edwards first met, the singer told PEOPLE that she was "not surprised” by the criticism the couple’s relationship inspired .

"Alexander’s got diamond teeth, tattoos, white hair, and he’s way younger. He’s a beautiful man,” Cher said of the rapper “Also, I think it’s fun to be interested in somebody else’s love life!” 

Cher said that prior to her and Edwards' fashion-week meet-cute, “I had been telling all my friends, ‘We’re too old to go out with really younger men, and I will never fall in love on text.’ So I did what I said not to do!”

But the star broke her rules for the music exec — with whom she has also collaborated professionally — “because he’s just so special,” she said.

“I hate when people say people are special, but lots of people say I’m special, so I can say that he’s special," she told PEOPLE. "No matter what happens, I love being with him. He makes me laugh, and we have fun. What I learned is that it’s never too late. If you wrote out all the statistics, you would go, ‘Well, this is doomed.’ But we’ve been together a year, and if it was just a year, it would’ve been worth it. I’ve had the best time.”

Cher Says Edwards Doesn't Get 'Most of My References'

Also in October 2023, Cher opened up about one of the downsides of her age-gap relationship for the first time , telling Extra , “Sometimes I’m talking to him and he has no idea who I’m talking about… The other day, I said, ‘Do you know who, I don’t know, Clark Gable, [is]?’ Somebody said, ‘Yes, of course,’ but most of my references… He’ll look at me and go, ‘I wasn’t born yet.’ ”

But regardless, the Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again star said, she and the rapper “just get each other.” “I hate to talk about how happy I am, but no, we have a great time together,” she told Extra .

“We can talk music. We can talk about everything. He’s got a great sense of humor, he’s got the cutest son in the world, ever,” she added. “We just get each other.”

Elsewhere during her Chicken Shop conversation with the comedian and journalist, Cher said she fell for Edwards "not at all" quickly but — going against her own dating rules — did become quite fond of him over text.

"I left to go to Switzerland, and he texted me. He said, 'Where are you going?' I said, 'I'm going to Switzerland, I'm a little tired.' And then he wrote me, 'Well, get some rest babyyy.' And I went, he doesn't know me well enough to put three y's on baby," the singer recalled. "I was kind of pissed off. And then he just started texting me."

Added Cher: "I told my friends, don't fall in love with a younger man, we're too old, and don't ever fall in love by text. There goes that theory."

Cher Says Men Her Age and Up Are 'Terrified to Approach' Her

While appearing on The Jennifer Hudson Show in May 2024, Cher echoed her previous reasoning for dating Edwards — and the other young men in her dating history.

The pop superstar told Hudson, “the reason I go out with young men is because men my age or older — well, now they’re all dead — but before they just never, they were always terrified to approach me and younger men were the only ones that...”

“They’re bold,” Hudson said, to which Cher replied: “Yeah, raised by women like me!"
