Tool Announce Fall 2023 North American Tour Dates
Tool have announced a fall tour of North America. Following a performance Louisville’s Louder Than Life in September, the band will play arena shows in October and November. The trek also includes a performance at Indio’s Power Trip . Find Tool’s tour dates below.
Earlier this year, Tool headlined Florida’s Welcome to Rockville and Sonic Temple Art & Music Festival in Columbus, Ohio. The band also toured North America last year, but did not perform in Canada. On their upcoming tour, Tool will play Canadian shows for the first time since 2019 .
At Welcome to Rockville, Tool frontman Maynard James Keenan also performed with another one of his bands, Puscifer. He made headlines by performing in a blonde wig, red lipstick, and prosthetic breasts, which many saw as a defiant act against Florida’s restrictive laws against drag shows. Keenan, however, said his choice of attire “had nothing to do with Florida.” The singer told The Messenger , “I’ve been cross-dressing since long before these clickbait-junkie dupes were out of diapers.” He added, “It’s pretty crazy the technology and the prosthetics nowadays, how they’ve come along, and I just was considering bringing the look back.”

Tool’s Maynard James Keenan Says Drag Outfit Had Nothing to Do With Florida Law: ‘I’m Not a…
Trending on billboard.
Singer Maynard James Keenan made news last month when he wore what appeared to be drag during a set at Daytona Beach’s Welcome to Rockville Festival, that seemed at first to be a reaction to the series of controversial bills signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis recently that ban minors from attending drag shows. But the vocalist who often wears women’s clothes and bizarre costumes on stage later said the choice was personal, not political.
“I’ve been cross-dressing since long before these clickbait-junkie dupes were out of diapers,” he told The Messenger . “And that’s really all there is to it. I’m not a political fella — had nothing to do with Florida.”

Since the 2019 release of TOOL’s critically-acclaimed album, Fear Inoculum , the band has won a GRAMMY Award® (Best Metal Performance for “7empest”), completed sold-out tours of both the U.S. and Europe, and headlined Bonnaroo, Welcome to Rockville and the Sonic Temple Arts & Music Festival. TOOL marked the 30th anniversary of the Opiate EP with the 2022 release of “ Opiate 2 ,” a re-imagining of the EP’s title track, released in tandem with a breathtaking, 10-minute short film crafted by Adam Jones and visual artist Dominic Hailstone (“Alien: Covenant”, “The Eel”).
Reviews from TOOL’s sold-out 2022 tours praised the four-piece, with Loudwire dubbing the performances as “a masterclass of immersion, sound and stage design, musicianship… and levels of ungodly tightness.” The Austin Chronicle described the incomparable live experience as an “unbridled exchange of catharsis between performers and fans.” More recently, Revolver , covering Welcome to Rockville 2023, said “TOOL delivered a stunning… set featuring classic fan favorites, newer Fear Inoculum standouts and choice deeper cuts … the striking visuals also included a psychedelic laser and projections show bar none.”
TOOL formed in 1990, releasing five studio albums: Undertow (1993), Ænima (1996), Lateralus (2001), 10,000 Days (2006), and Fear Inoculum (2019); two EPs: 72826 (1991) and Opiate (1992), and the limited-edition boxset Salival (2000). The band has won four GRAMMY Awards®: Best Metal Performance (1998, “Ænima”), Best Metal Performance (2002, “Schism”), Best Recording Package (2007, 10,000 Days ) and Best Metal Performance (2020, “7empest”). TOOL is Danny Carey (drums), Justin Chancellor (bass), Adam Jones (guitar) and Maynard James Keenan (vocals).

In late February, Adam Jones shared a video on his Instagram story rehearsing the 10,000 Days track "Rosetta Stoned" with Justin Chancellor and Danny Carey. The band's fans were freaked out on Reddit over the clip because the song hasn't been played much at all over the last decade. They performed it a handful of times in 2018, and prior to that, it hadn't been part of their setlist since 2009, so perhaps we'll see the rockers bring it back around during this upcoming run.

South American Tool rumours intensify
- August 31, 2024 August 31, 2024
Giving more credence to the report that Tool were planning to visit Chile in 2025, a recent Tweet from respected Brazilian music journalist José Norberto Flesch suggests that an announcement is imminent: Word is that the South American variant of Lollapalooza – held in Chile, Brazil and Argentina will be announced on the 3rd of September, and that Tool will be the headline act. Could be a historic day for… Read More » South American Tool rumours intensify

According to a the most recent COSM Newsletter, something is coming on the 30th of August to mark the 5th anniversary of Tool‘s Fear Inoculum. No real clue as to what, but given the context of the announcement I expect it will be something that Alex Grey will autograph and sell: As we approach the 5th anniversary of Fear Inoculum, it’s time to honor the album that redefined rock. Tool rumour mill suggests Chile in 2025
- August 8, 2024 August 8, 2024
It’s been a while between Fourtheye posts, but we’re not dead (yet!) I’ve had an article sent my way from La Latercera, a Chilean publication which – based on a dodgy Google Translation – suggests that talks are underway to bring Tool down to Santiago in 2025. There’s also some suggestion that there could be other dates, I assume in these would also be in the region of South America.… Read More » Tool rumour mill suggests Chile in 2025
Mike Portnoy learns impossible Danny Carey part
- Danny Carey
- May 25, 2024 May 25, 2024
Drumeo are one of the best drum channels on Youtube, and have covered Danny Carey‘s work several times in the past. This week, they get Mike Portnoy – known for his work in Dream Theater and Liquid Tension Experiment – to have a crack at learning Danny’s drumming in the Tool track Pneuma. Mike undersells his ability somewhat (he’s a great drummer) and eventually cranks out a pretty decent version… Read More » Mike Portnoy learns impossible Danny Carey part
Paul D’Amour chats with Bass Player
- May 14, 2024 May 14, 2024
A little while back we had a snippet of an interview with former Tool bass player Paul D’Amour where he talks about working with Justin as he joined the band. The whole thing is now out on Guitarworld, and it’s an interesting read, with plenty of insight into Paul’s time with the band, and his ultimate departure. Paul’s humble and measured replies are pretty interesting, and I enjoyed it quite… Read More » Paul D’Amour chats with Bass Player

Paul discusses Tool handover with Justin

- April 12, 2024 April 12, 2024
A new interview with Paul D’Amour sounds like a pretty interesting read. He talks about the handover of bass duties with Justin Chancellor, going over some of the time they spent together on the Tool sound Paul helped develop. “Basically, when I left the band, Justin [Chancellor] was my friend; I invited him to my house, sat on my couch with him, and showed him how to play the songs. … Read More » Paul discusses Tool handover with Justin

In a recent Tool interview with Metal Hammer, Adam Jones and Maynard James Keenan catch up with Steve Appleford for a discussion about the recent US tour, Tool stuff and life in general. It’s a good read, though in some ways doesn’t have a heap of things we haven’t read before. I suppose the more interesting snippets for long time Tool fans relate to what’s coming up next.
Reviews from TOOL’s sold-out 2022 tours praised the four-piece, with Loudwiredubbing the performances as “a masterclass of immersion, sound and stage design, musicianship… and levels of ungodly tightness.” The Austin Chronicle described the incomparable live experience as an “unbridled exchange of catharsis between performers and fans.” More recently, Revolver, covering Welcome to Rockville 2023, said “TOOL delivered a stunning… set featuring classic fan favorites, newer Fear Inoculum standouts and choice deeper cuts … the striking visuals also included a psychedelic laser and projections show bar none.”

TOOL announces North American tour including stop in eastern Idaho
Nate Eaton, EastIdahoNews.com
IDAHO FALLS — TOOL announced a North American Tuesday morning and one of the stops includes a concert in Idaho Falls.
The iconic rock band will perform at Hero Arena inside Mountain America Center on Thursday, Oct. 12.
“When you get a chance to host an artist like TOOL, this is a big day for us,” Mountain America Center General Manager Erik Hudson tells EastIdahoNews.com. “This is the smallest facility they’ve played in 20 years but the infrastructure of the Mountain America Center will easily handle the production and we’ll have a wonderful night of great music.”
The tour announcement follows TOOL’s debut live performances of 2023, headlining both Welcome to Rockville and the Sonic Temple Art & Music Festival in recent weeks.
Since the 2019 release of the group’s album ‘Fear Inoculum,’ the band has won a Grammy Award and completed sold-out tours of both the U.S. and Europe. TOOL marked the 30th anniversary of the ‘Opiate’ EP with the 2022 release of ‘Opiate2,’ a re-imagining of the EP’s title track.
Tickets go on sale Friday, June 9 at 10 a.m. Pre-sale tickets are available exclusively via TOOL’s fan club, TOOL Army , on June 8 at 10 a.m. A limited number of VIP packages, including premium tickets, soundcheck access, exclusive merchandise and more, will be offered to TOOL Army members simultaneously, with remaining options available to the general public as the on-sale begins on June 9 via Ticketmaster.com .
“I think a common misconception of our facility is it’s not big enough to bring in large names like TOOL but it’s quite the opposite,” Hudson explains. “We’re in a great spot routing-wise between Boise, Salt Lake, Calgary and Billings. Within our short time frame of being open (just over 6 months), we are already attracting the attention of high-caliber acts such as TOOL, Volbeat, Old Dominion, Falling In Reverse, REO Speedwagon…this region and local community has proven they can support shows with ticket sales and incredible fan bases.”

The remainder of the reunion tour by the original lineup of Jane’s Addiction, the group’s first in 14 years, has been canceled. While a general statement issued under the band’s name collectively did not lay blame, guitarist Dave Navarro laid it squarely at singer Perry Farrell ‘s feet in a separate statement issued on his own social accounts and co-signed by the other two band members, saying Farrell is experiencing mental health issues and saying they “hope he finds the help he needs.”

But Navarro posted a more detailed statement on behalf of himself and two other members of the group, writing, “Due to a continuing pattern of behavior and the mental health difficulties of our singer Perry Farrell, we have come to the conclusion that we have no choice but to discontinue the current US tour. Our concern for his personal health and safety as well as our own has left us no alternative. We hope that he will find the help he needs.”
Navarro continued, “We deeply regret that we are not able to come through for all our fans who have already bought tickets. We can see no solution that would either ensure a safe environment on stage or reliably allow us to deliver a great performance on a nightly basis. Our hearts are broken.” The statement is signed “Dave, Eric and Stephen (Perkins).”

Previously, the band had only canceled its show Sunday in Connecticut in the wake of their on-stage physical altercation in Boston. But reports had emerged that band members had already flown separate ways over the weekend, and Dave Navarro had gone on his Instragram account to post a photo of himself holding a guitar with the Jane’s Addiction logo that bore the simple caption “Goodnight.”
Navarro was not the only one citing alleged mental health issues being at play on Farrell’s part. The singer’s wife, Etty Lau Farrell, had issued an Instagram statement that was generally defensive of her husband in the stage melee, but later Saturday, she added in a comment that Farrell was “spinning out” and said that his current state represented “the most devastating mental health of all” that she had seen since being with him since 1997.
The confrontation between Farrell, Navarro, Avery and crew members near the planned climax of a concert at Boston’s Leader Bank Pavilion was caught on video by dozens of audience members, and widely shared on social media, shocking even some veteran observers who’ve witnessed their share of intra-band tension over the years.
The group’s first official response after the fracas had been to issue an apology on Saturday and announce the cancellation of the next show, which was to take place Sunday night in Connecticut, with no mention at the time about whether the rest of the 14 tour dates left on the itinerary would proceed or not. But Navarro seemed to indicate which way things were going to go, when he took to his own Instagram account on Sunday afternoon and simply posted the word “Goodbye…” as a caption to a pensive photo of himself bearing a guitar with a large Jane’s Addiction logo on the back.
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Jane’s Addiction (@janesaddiction)
As soon as that punch was thrown, three men stepped in to subdue Farrell, including two who entered from the wings, plus Avery. The footage grew murkier at that point, as the stage lights were turned down. Navarro gently put his guitar down onto the stage while the three men grappled with Farrell. Once the agitated singer was forcibly removed from the stage, the other three members stood and made silent, sentimental gestures to the cheering audience, hugging one another and giving the peace sign before making an exit.
In her initial Instagram post Saturday, Etty Lau Farrell offered a detailed explanation of why, in her mind, her husband had a reason to be upset — it had to do with sound issues letting the band drown out his vocals, she said — and why she blamed Avery for “winning the fight,” in her words, by escalating it. In her accounting, Avery took advantage of the situation by putting the combative singer in a headlock and punching him three times in the stomach. That is something that is difficult to confirm definitively just from watching the fan-shot video, but it hasn’t kept fans from vigorously debating whether Avery overreacted, as Etty maintains, or was within his rights to finish a band fight that Farrell started.
In the immediate aftermath of the fight, some fans who had been in attendance at the fateful show correctly predicted that they had just seen the abrupt end of the tour, if not of Jane’s Addiction for the rest of time.
For all the joking comparisons with the newly reunited Oasis, many were taking seriously whatever personal demons may be bedeviling band members to have turned the reunion so sour, with nearly half of the tour still to go at the time it was canceled. More than one review of Jane’s Addiction concerts this month had used the word “chugging” in describing Farrell’s wine consumption on stage, both at the good and not-so-good shows.
Etty Lau Farrell insisted that alcohol was not the real issue. “Unfortunately, that bottle of wine is more of a prop nowadays. I have gotten angry at him multiple times, that he would leave a beautiful bottle of wine 3/4 full on the stage, when I would’ve loved a glass after the show.” It was then that she offered her alternate explanation: “Spinning out. The most devastating health of all (since she was first) with him since 97.”
She continued, “The band started the song ‘Ocean’ before Perry was ready and did the count-off. The stage volume was so loud at that point that Perry couldn’t hear pas(t) the boom and the vibration of the instruments and by the end of the song, he wasn’t singing, he was screaming just be to be heard.” Etty mentioned the “body check” by her husband against Navarro, although not the punch. After asking the rhetorical question “who won the fight?,” she answered: ““Why, Eric Avery of course. While Dave was keeping Perry at arm’s length to de-escalate the situation, Dan rushed over to de-escalate as well by holding Perry back. Dave walked away to take his guitar off. Eric walked up to Perry, upstage, in the dark, behind Dan, put Perry in a headlock and punched him in the stomach three times. Kevin, crew member with long hair, pulled Eric away. Then Eric nonchalant(ly) walked off to the front of the stage to apologize to audience for the show end(ing) early.”
In the aftermath, she wrote, “Dave still looked handsome and cool in the middle of a fight. Perry was a crazed beast for the next half an hour — he finally did not calm down, but did break down and cried and cried. Eric, well, he either didn’t understand what de-(es)calation meant or took advantage of the situation and got in a few cheap shots on Perry.” At the end of her post, she added hashtags that read, in part: “A man can only be pushed so far.” “Dave took the high road.” “Cheap shot.” “Mother eagle.”
Clearly there’s much more to the story to be told, even if Farrell’s wife account is largely accurate, as she left unanswered questions like Farrell went directly after a surprised-looking Navarro if he was upset about sound issues that the guitarist presumably didn’t control.
But fans discussing the band breakdown on Reddit and in other forums have been piecing together clues from watching footage of songs the band performed earlier in the night in Boston, at which point tensions were already clearly developing, as well as from concerts earlier in the tour. Many believe that the band members had been out of synch at different points in the Boston gig, with Farrell possibly losing his place in songs and Navarro seeming to come over to him to signal that he was about to go into a solo. Some of these fans believe that Navarro’s guitar solo during what turned out to be the final song of the night came as a surprise to Farrell, and that this may have been the reason for his rage.
A review of the band’s Tampa show earlier this month in Creative Loafing may have offered a hint of where some other tension between Farrell and Navarro might have been found. The Florida critic reported: “Farrell launched into many nonsensical rants about cow pastures, mushrooms, surfing, living in Florida, and arguing with his brother about politics, among other undecipherable comments” while “chugging from a full bottle of wine throughout the performance. … At one point, during one of his ramblings, Navarro deliberately cranked out a loud, piercing chord on his guitar, as almost to silence Farrell and get the show back on track.”
On Wednesday night in New York, things indeed took a turn for the better, according to a reviewer for JamBase who wrote, “I had seen the reports of Farrell’s condition on Tuesday, so I had trepidation as Jane’s Addiction came on. All my fears quickly eased away as my first Jane’s experience was a great one. Farrell sang well, Perkins crushed it behind the kit, Navarro shredded and Avery anchored the band with his steady work on bass. … Some of (Farrell’s) stories were engaging and others rambled as he chugged from a bottle of wine. … However, when it came to singing the songs, Farrell nailed most of them.”
The tour by Jane’s Addiction was a co-headlining one shared with another veteran ’80s/’90s band, Love & Rockets. Their outing began Aug. 9 in Las Vegas and was scheduled to wrap up at L.A.’s YouTube Theater on Oct. 16, where the band already performed one successful show.
Jane’s was said to have an album mostly completed, and there’s no word yet on whether the record will still come out. A single was released, “Imminent Redemption,” that was said to be the band’s first recording with all of its original members in 34 years.
