Formed in Van Nuys, Greater Los Angeles, USA, Toto are a critically acclaimed, six piece rock band known for their eclectic blend of influences to create a unique style of music.

Toto started life in 1977, when a group of session musicians decided to form their own band to play original music of their own. The lineup has changed over the years but currently the band features Steve Lukather on guitar and vocals, Joseph Williams as lead vocalist, David Paich on keyboards and vocals, Steve Porcaro on keyboards, Keith Carlock on drums and bass player David Hungate replacing Mike Porcaro due to illness.

Toto's anthemic arena rock has been pleasing fans worldwide for over three decades, with the band releasing a total of 17 albums and selling over 35 million records. Their 1982 album "Toto IV" became their most commercially successful release, featuring the top five hits "Hold The Line," "Rosanna" and perhaps their best known song "Africa." The main keyboard riff of "Africa" is instantly recognisable and is a classic song of the 80s. What makes Toto's music so successful is their wide-ranging influences, incorporating world rhythms, progressive rock, soul and jazz into their melting pot. "Toto IV" earned the band seven Grammy Awards, which included Record of the Year for "Rosanna," as well as Album of the Year and Producer of the Year for the record.

Toto continued to have a prolific output yet did not achieve the same levee of success as with "Toto IV." In 2002, to celebrate their 25th anniversary, the band released "Through the Looking Glass", an album of covers that was a tribute to the music that influenced the band, featuring covers of songs by Bob Marley, Steely Dan and George Harrison. The band struggled with lineup changes throughout the later stage of their career. In 2008, following David Paich's retirement and Mike Porcaro's illness, Steve Lukather called an end to Toto, citing the loss of many of the original members as reasons for this. But in 2010, in order to raise money to support Porcaro through his medical costs, the band reunited for several further tours and also talk of a new album in the works.

Toto were one of the most successful bands of the 80s and their music continues to define the sound of the decade. In 2009, the band were inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame in 2009, cementing their reputation.

Live reviews

Toto are masters at blending diverse genres together to create a sound that is all of their own. They have combined the diverse genres of soul, funk, pop, rock, jazz, and progressive rock into their sound that allows them to produce large atmospheric sounds that will grab the audience’s attention. Toto can hit you in the face with a fierce hard rock guitar riff and then they can send you into a trance of other worldly sounds with the shimmering music of the synthesizers that the band produces. Their bass player has the ability to get deep warm tones from his bass guitar that drives the rhythm of most of the songs, and the piano player will also play organ effects on his synthesizers to get a real meaty and funky sound to enhance the music. Toto tours with many band members that play different instruments, but they are all well versed at playing in time to create a richly ornate quality to their music. Toto’s band consists of background singers that often perform call and response melodies with the lead singer to produce a soulful sound to their music. The band plays a diverse setlist when touring that includes most of their hits. They will play the hard-rock tune “Hold the Line” that will get the audience rocking out to the music, and then they will play the more foreign, ethereal sounding tune “Africa” that has lush synth sounds that will make you think that you are in the safari’s of Africa. The band has been a commercial and critical success already having been inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum as well as having won numerous Grammy Awards.

While at a Toto concert you will be in awe of the diverse performance styles that the band conveys. Each member is a master on their instrument and to see them play with such precision together, creating such amazing sounds is an inspirational sensation.

Toto, the American rock six-piece formed almost forty years ago yet continue to wow crowds with their abilities to merge numerous genres into slick sounding alt-pop. Known to incorporate pop, rock, soul, funk, progressive rock and jazz into their music, the set up is notably detailed with a whole variety of session musicians drafted in to support the main band.

As the opening notes of 'Child's Anthem' fill the room, the crowd cheers as the veteran act takes it place. They did not achieve as greater commercial success in the UK as in their homeland yet the British audiences are receptive to their musicianship and the handful of tracks that did make the chart such as 'Rosanna' and 'Stop Loving You' receive big cheers from the crowds.

A brilliant cover of Michael Jackson's 'Human Nature' gets the crowd enthusiastically clapping and cheering along. Followed up by their biggest international hit 'Africa' of course receives huge bellows and cheers from the whole room. Enthusiasm appears to be in this band's American blood and as they wrap up with 'Home of The Brave' they seem incredibly happy with the show.

I have seen a lot of amazing musical groups over the years. Pat Metheny, Chick Corea, Journey, Rush, Allan Holdsworth, Maynard Ferguson and so many others, but watching and listening to TOTO on their 35th year anniversary was over the top. I remember watching them in 1984 with a very rare meet and greet with Jeff Porcaro and thought wow these guys are good. Then over the years with I have seen them a dozen times or so and they just get better and better. Simon is so tight with his groves, both David and Steve P. nailing the keyboard parts is just awesome. Steve L. just brings it on every show but my wife and I were amazed at Joseph Williams. Damn that guy can sing! Not to mention that Amy Keys added to the whole experience. However, we will never forget meeting and speaking with each one of these amazing men. Even though I am a professional it was hard to come face to face with those who truly shaped the American music scene. It was just a great experience and true honor. We can hardly wait for their next album and performances.

I saw them in Dublin 5th April and paid for the VIP-experience as well. The guys weren`t in the best form, but it was amazing seeing them doing their soundcheck, Joseph Williams was chatting to the more curious fans - we were just standing there mesmerized..We got our photos taken with the band, our music sheet signed, got a keyring then we got escorted to the bar, and got back in before the rest of the crowd was let in, so in a way we all paid for having a spot in the front rows too..

They were brilliant! This was the end of the tour, so at some point you could see they`re only human and are tired, but they offered an exceptional music experience to us all! I can`t remember any other band playing this good live; yes, they did get older of course, but they are still masters of their instruments and the new band members fit in perfectly with them!

I could go on praising them, but I won`t.

They were amazing and that is that!!!

This was an absolutely AWESOME show by TOTO! In 40 years TOTO has only aged visibly; however, TOTO's music has evolved into the 21st century! TOTO not only entertained the audience at THE WARNER THEATRE with Its old hits and new compositions, TOTO wowed the audience with lead guitar solos that would have granted a nod from Eric Clapton, Steve Howe, and from the great Jimmy Hendrix, if he were still with Us. Also, TOTO made certain to include the audience of THE WARNER THEATRE in Its music performace by ordering Us on Our feet to sing & dance! In addition, TOTO gave Us a music history lesson by telling the audience who wrote the music score for the 1970's hit movie, JAWS and who wrote one of Michael Jackson's hit songs! Finally, a new member of TOTO, Xavier, a PRINCE rollover, wowed the audience with a classical music solo ... . Hopefully TOTO will keep Us entertained, in the future, with "50 Trips Around The Sun"!

I attended ToTo's "40 Trips Around The Sun" concert on Monday and was absolutely blown away by the amazing talent of this band. The band played a mix of songs, that they don't usually perform in concert, which included songs from their earlier work, as well as some fan favorites. The guys were on fire, full of energy and always entertaining the audience with their humor and enthusiasm. Loved it when the audience was encouraged to join in on some of the old favorites and when band members Steve Lukather, Joe Williams and Steve Porcaro sat down and reminisced about how certain songs came about and the stories behind their 40 plus year friendships.I would highly recommend seeing this fabulous band and I'm already looking forward to seeing them again!

This show was for true TOTO fans, many of whom have followed the band, as I have, since 1978 and were therefore made to feel part of the Forty Tours Around The Sun. Not only did the band play their most famous hits, they also did a semi-acoustic set in interview style to talk about how everything had started and played rarities from their 40 year history. I have seen TOTO many times but, with the addition of sax, harmonica and a new bassist/backing vocalist of world class, they sounded new and fresh! Like everyone else in the audience, my friend and I sang all the words and harmonies for every song! Simply the best TOTO show ever !!

Unfortunately the Scandinavian Congress Center in Århus, Denmark, did not give any justice for the amazing TOTO.

We stood on the floor during the whole concert and couldn't sene any of TOTO's members at all.

The sound dit NOT lave any space for the vokalists.. The bass-Sound was way too loud. I am very disappointed by the congresscenter, Where the concert took place..

Next time TOTO comes to Denmark we will look very much forward to se you amazing guys in Jyske Bank Boxen in Herning, Jutland, Denmark.

In Jyske Bank Boxen the sound is much, much better and the artists can be seen from any of the seats..

The premises of Hamburg's 'Mehr! Theater am Grossmarkt' were not built with an emphasis on music performances. A pity.

Toto did a good job to defend their reputation to be one of the world's most precise team play bands, but I can't stand the short versions of their greatest hits just in order to perform as many hits as possible in the given time frame. The latest two studio albums 'Falling in Between' and 'Toto XIV' were underrepresented although these albums are much more mature and musically challenging than the early ones.

TOTO is one of my favorites. They are pro-fessional musicians and I fell in love with their music back in the 80's. Saw them here in Hawaii when Santana played. My favorite song is "Africa". But I love all their songs, they nail the chords with perfection. I love David Paich, he is supercalafrajalisticexpealadocious! I can't wait to see them perform here in Hawaii again. It's been a long 12 years ago. I rip waves whiles listening to their songs in my head surfing. Mahalo for letting me share my heart out to TOTO!

Joseph Williams Talks About Toto's 2023 Tour With Journey

Posted January 2023

Photo taken in Los Angeles on 09/04/20.

Throughout the years, Toto’s band lineup has evolved. During the pandemic, Toto lead singer Joseph Williams and bandmate/guitarist Steve Lukather, along with band founder David Paich, have assembled the current lineup consisting of Warren Ham (Kansas, Ringo Starr) on sax, Xavier Taplin (Prince, Queen Latifah) and Steve Maggiora (Marc Broussard, Daniel Powter) on keyboards, John Pierce (Lou Rawls, Cab Calloway, Gladys Knight) on bass, and Sput Searight (God’s Property, Ghost-Note, Snarky Puppy) on drums/percussion. They join Williams and Lukather in making up what can arguably be said is the tightest Toto configuration in many years. The lineup was introduced to fans during a livestream concert in late 2020 and were all warmly received.

Joseph Williams chatted with Boomerocity about the ongoing tour - they replaced an ailing Billy Idol for Journey’s entire Freedom tour. The two bands also now have a “family connection” after Steve Lukather’s son, Trevor, married Journey’s Jonathan Cain’s daughter, Madison, in early December of last year.

ABOUT JOURNEY

Since the group's formation in 1973, JOURNEY has earned 19 top 40 singles, 25 gold and platinum albums, and has sold over 100 million albums globally. Their "Greatest Hits" album is certified 15 times-platinum, making JOURNEY one of the few bands to ever have been diamond-certified, and their song "Don't Stop Believin'" has been streamed over one billion times alone.

JOURNEY was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2017, and 2018's co-headlining tour with DEF LEPPARD was the band's most successful tour to date, landing them in the Top 10 year-end touring chart with more than 1 million tickets sold, and earning them the prestigious Billboard "Legends Of Live" touring award. March 2019 saw the release of "Escape & Frontiers Live In Japan", a live DVD/CD set from their concert at the Budokan in Tokyo featuring the band's first-ever performances of the albums "Escape" and "Frontiers" in their entirety. JOURNEY has also received a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame and were inducted into the Hollywood Bowl Hall Of Fame. Additionally, the band is the subject of the award-winning documentary "Don't Stop Believin': Everyman's Journey" about the band's resurgence upon adding Arnel Pineda as lead singer after JOURNEY Founder, Neal Schon discovered the Philippines native on YouTube.

The members of TOTO are celebrating an accomplishment few bands have achieved in the modern era. Cumulative streams of the ensemble’s repertoire

now exceed 3 billion plays. Amongst the most listened to recordings, “Africa” accounts for over one billion streams at Spotify alone. This year the song was recertified by the RIAA 8X Platinum.

Over the past decade, the band has had a major renaissance in popularity like few bands at this point in their career. The audience is truly multi-generational, becoming younger with each passing year. Joining Steve Lukather and Joseph Williams are band members bassist John Pierce (Huey Lewis and The News), drummer Robert “Sput” Searight (Ghost-Note, Founding member Snarky Puppy, Snoop Dogg), keyboardist Dominique “Xavier” Taplin (Prince, Ghost-Note), multi-instrumentalist / vocalist Warren Ham (Ringo Starr) and keyboardist / background vocalist Steve Maggiora,. This line-up marks the fifteenth incarnation of Toto in consideration of band members or sidemen who joined or exited. Individually and collectively, few have had a larger imprint on pop culture than the members of TOTO. The family tree can be heard on an astonishing 5000 albums that together amass a sales history of a half a billion albums. Amongst these recordings, NARAS applauded the performances with hundreds of Grammy nominations.

With now 45+ years together and literally thousands of credits, including the biggest selling album of all time: Michael Jackson’s Thriller, and accolades to their names, TOTO remains one of the top selling touring and recording acts in the world. They are the benchmark by which many artists base their sound and production, and they continue to transcend the standards set by the entire music community, being simply synonymous with musical credibility. They are pop culture and are one of the few 70’s bands that have endured the changing trends and styles continuing to remain relevant.

JOURNEY is continuing to promote its latest album, "Freedom" , which was released in July via BMG . The LP debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Current Rock chart.

The members of JOURNEY celebrated the album's release by kicking off a residency featuring special symphony orchestra performances at the new, state-of-the-art Resorts World Casino in Las Vegas.

As JOURNEY 's legend continues to grow larger and their touring gets bigger, "Freedom" is the band’s first album of new material to be released in eleven years, since 2011's "Eclipse" , and in addition to Schon , along with longtime keyboard player and primary lyricist Cain and Pineda , one more member was recruited for the LP — bassist extraordinaire Randy Jackson , who had played on JOURNEY 's 1986 album "Raised On Radio" .

Inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2017, JOURNEY has 25 gold and platinum albums, with total sales adding up to over 100 million albums worldwide, earning the band two Diamond Awards with a third on the way for the "Frontiers" album. JOURNEY has also surpassed one billion streams on Spotify .

MUSIC: Toto Still Holds the Line

BY JEFF MAISEY

Multi-Grammy Award winning classic rock band Toto, known for its late ‘70s and early ‘80s hit songs like “Hold the Line,” “Rosanna” and “Africa,” will be stopping in Newport News on February 16 for a show at the Ferguson Center.

Toto burst onto the music scene with the 1978 release of its self-titled debut. Four decades and some 13 studio albums later, with numerous ups and downs, hiatuses and reformations, they’re alive and well with founding guitarist Steve Lukather and longtime singer Joe Williams joined with bassist John Pierce (Huey Lewis and The News), drummer Robert “Sput” Searight (Ghost-Note, Snoop Dogg), keyboardist / background vocalist Steve Maggiora, keyboardist Dominique “Xavier” Taplin (Prince, Ghost-Note), and multi-instrumentalist /vocalist Warren Ham (Ringo Starr).

While diehard fans know the individual band members, many familiar with Toto’s music are not in part because the group’s album covers featured artwork of the logo instead of faces. The current lineup is Toto’s fifteenth rendition of the live group.

“That was what the whole thing about the band,” said Joe Williams, the son of composer John Williams who joined Toto in 1986 as vocalist. “This was a group of incredibly talented studio musicians who worked constantly and then started working on their own project (Toto) as opposed to a front-of-stage rock idol personality. The personality of the band was with the six members themselves. The band is about great songs and great musicianship. A lot of reviewers have always been confused as to what the look of the band is.”

The members of Toto were such sought after studio musicians they were individually recruited to play on Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” album.

“We definitely had our hands in that album, though we don’t get a lot of press over it,” said Steve Lukather. “We were on four or five tracks. I had a great time on those sessions and was glad to be a part of something so big, you know? We knew it was going to be a hit record, but we didn’t know it was going to be the biggest record of all time.”

The band members were also credited on records by Boz Scaggs, Seals & Crofts, Steely Dan, and many more during the glorious 1970s.

Founding member David Paich, who is taking a break from live touring, composed the band’s greatest hits. He’s the guy who pulled the whole “project amongst friends” together.

“We had been playing together since we were 15,” said Lukather. “We went in and made the album before we even played it as a band. We produced the hell out of it, you know? Did the big vocals; did the big guitars; the grandiose production. Then we had to figure out how to play it live.   So that was a little daunting.”

Toto’s self-titled debut album was a monstrous success with FM radio stations playing the hell out of “Hold The Line,” “Georgy Porgy,” and “I’ll Supply The Love.”

The supergroup of players rolled forward with two albums — “Hydra” (1979) and “Turn Back” (1981) — though they didn’t have the same commercial success as the debut.

“We were just trying to find ourselves,” said Lukather. “We got labeled as this pussy pop band. We didn’t like that label, so we kept trying to fight against it.

“And we don’t like to repeat ourselves,” he continued. “We were left to produce ourselves in our own hands, and we did what we wanted to do. It was hit and miss.”

Then came Toto’s most successful album of all — “IV.”

“We were trying to find ourselves on those first three albums,” Luather said. “When we did ‘Toto IV’ it was sink or swim so we wrote the best songs and played the best we possibly could and stopped trying to chase the trends.”

In 1982, with its fourth album powered by the hits “Africa” and “Rosanna.,” Toto ruled the charts. The album, “IV,” garnered seven Grammy Awards.

“We were taken by surprise,” Lukather said. “We didn’t think our stuff would stack up against McCartney, Stevie Wonder and Donald Fagan, people that are our heroes, you know?

“When we did it was terrifying, actually,” he continued. “We didn’t think we were going to win anything. Then a backlash happens and everybody hates you. It was like ‘it’s just because everybody in the music business knows you.’”

Before Joe Williams joined Toto, he was a fan, noting his love for both The Beatles and prog rocker like Yes. To his ears Toto was a mix of pop and more complex musicianship, and that he found appealing.

When thinking back to the appeal of some on Toto’s best known songs, Williams shared his insights.

“Hold The Line” was just perfect for its time,” said Williams. “The barking guitar, which is the signature of that song, and it was just an incredible performance by Bobby Kimball on the vocals. It was a perfectly designed hit rock record.”

Regarding “Georgie Porgy,” Williams said: “Once again we’re talking about David Paich, who is the composer of each of these songs. One of the brilliant things about Dave is if you listen to something like ‘Hold The Line’ and then go to ‘Georgie,’ it sounds like it could have been written by an entirely different person. Dave is eclectic in his writing and that sound comes from him.”

Of all the Toto hits, “Africa” and “Rosanna” seem to stand the test of time.

“I think certain songs just have a longer life and hold up a little more over the years as opposed to others,” said Williams. “‘Africa’ you can still listen to today and it still works on a sonic level and in every way.”

In 2023, Toto will be touring heavily with fellow classic rockers Journey as well as “Evening With” performances on their own, like the Ferguson Center concert.

Steve Lukather, who gets his big signature guitar sound by double-tracking everything he plays in the studio, looks back at an amazing career spanning four decades and fondly of those early recording sessions.

“We’ve grown into ourselves 45 years later. We decided if we could get 10 years out this, like our heroes The Beatles did, then great. We were all doing (studio) sessions, doing as much as we could. We were young, hungry, single, crazy, and had the world by the balls. It was the best time ever. I still have the best memories of that era still etched into my soul. It was really fantastic.

“We had our own band and doing our own music. It was the best of both worlds. We were living the dream.

“Some of the best music was not made by the prettiest people. There’s something about guys sitting in a room and playing music organically that you just can’t copy on a computer, I’m sorry. You can’t. You can’t take a million dollar studio, put million dollar players in there, and not come out with something great. Greatness rises to the top.”
