The Tour 21

Cure Leukaemia launch ‘The Route’

National blood cancer charity cure leukaemia has strengthened their relationship with one of the most iconic cycling events in the world by becoming the first ever official charity partner of the tour de france femmes avec zwift (tdffaz) in the uk..

As part of the partnership, the charity have today launched ‘ The Route ’ which will see up to 25 amateur cyclists ride the full TDFFAZ route in 2024, one day ahead of the professional race.

First announced in 2021, the first Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift launched the following year with immense success and demonstrated the significant growth and demand for female cycling events across the world. The landmark race featured eight stages of racing with a similar number of stages planned for the 2023 and 2024 editions, with ambitious plans to expand the race over the coming years. The inaugural edition saw the pro’s tackle 1033km across the eight consecutive days.

Sitting alongside the charity’s flagship event – The Tour 21 – “The Route” will be organised by Cure Leukaemia and will offer female riders the opportunity to live the Route, feel the Route and ride the Route – staying in the same hotels as the pros, receive official training and event kit from the charity’s official kit supplier, Santini, dedicated physio and mechanical support along the way and rolling road closures throughout the event – topped off with a 5* finish to celebrate.

Speaking about the launch of “The Route”, Cure Leukaemia Chief Executive James McLaughlin said:

“We are extremely proud and excited to be the first ever charity partner in the UK for the TDFFAZ.”

“Since 2021, we have had the likes of Sarah Hope, Jackie Fowler and Nicole Perry all complete The Tour 21 and this year we have got a further four females taking part, so every year the number of female cyclists is increasing. By launching “The Route,” it is the next natural step in offering female cyclists the opportunity to ride the same route as the professionals whilst further enhancing our partnership with A.S.O.”

Speaking about the launch of “The Route”, former racing cyclist and current Television Presenter Rebecca Charlton said:

“It really is truly staggering how much money has been raised through The Tour 21 and I have spoken with Geoff (Thomas) a number of times over the years and we have always wanted more women involved so the launch of “The Route” is perfect for that. I am excited to work with the charity as part of the event and help build the profile of female cycling across the Cure Leukaemia community.”

“I follow all of the women that have completed The Tour 21 on social media and frequently see other women saying that they could not go and emulate what the professional riders do for the whole month of the Tour de France. What these women have shown over the years however is that it can be done by amateur riders who lead busy lives! “The Route” offers a different alternative for the female market who don’t feel they want to take on 21 stages, but could target eight stages and I am excited to see the event grow!”

Speaking about the launch of “The Route”, former professional cyclist and (now) Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift Director Marion Rousse said:

“ I am truly thrilled to launch “The Route” together with Cure Leukaemia. “The Route” is yet another example of how the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift inspires generations by further breaking barriers for women in cycling, which is our ambition. I am so proud to see more women riding France routes every summer and even more so when it helps to raise funds for wonderful charities like Cure Leukaemia. ”

Speaking about the launch of “The Route” and the extension of the partnership between Cure Leukaemia and A.S.O., A.S.O. CEO Yann Le Moenner said:

“ The collaboration we have with Cure Leukaemia has been so positive that it was obvious that it had to be extended for the coming years to the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift. We are really proud to open our events doors to Cure Leukaemia to create more awareness around blood cancer and to support the research. ”

Alongside the launch of “ The Route ”, the charity has also announced the three-year extension of their partnership with Amaury Sports Organisation (A.S.O) and will see the charity continue their status as the Official Charity Partner of the Tour de France in the UK. The extension will also give the charity access to A.S.O’s exciting portfolio of events and official licences.

Over the past three years, the unique partnership has seen Cure Leukaemia’s major cycling event, “The Tour 21” raise over £4.3million with proceeds directly funding the charity’s Trials Acceleration Programme (TAP) Network.

About Cure Leukaemia

Founded in 2003 by Professor Charlie Craddock CBE and patients Graham Silk and Michael Woolley, Cure Leukaemia helps to bring pioneering drug and transplant treatments to blood cancer patients across the United Kingdom. The charity funds the Trials Acceleration Programme (TAP) network comprising 12 blood cancer centres across the UK.

As a result, the specialist research nurses funded at these centres allow clinical trials of pioneering and potentially life-saving treatments for blood cancer to run, giving patients from a catchment area of over 20 million access to these new therapies. Cure Leukaemia also funds the TAP network’s Hub based at the internationally renowned Centre for Clinical Haematology at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham to co-ordinate and accelerate the delivery and assessment of these pioneering trials.

Without the expert research nurses to ensure patients are constantly monitored and cared for; these trials would not run, and patients would miss the opportunity to access potentially life-saving therapies. The aim of Cure Leukaemia is to raise money to fund more research nurses and provide world-class treatment for its patients. Only by funding more nurses in more hospitals, can more blood cancer patients benefit from access to potentially life-saving treatment.

In 2017 Cure Leukaemia raised an additional £1m to help fully fund the expansion of the Centre for Clinical Haematology. The transformational £3.4m project doubled the Centre’s capacity for blood cancer patients treated, clinical trials opened, and research nurses employed. Capacity for an additional 75 jobs has been created, and it has allowed stem cell transplants to be performed as an outpatient for the first time.

Also in 2017, Cure Leukaemia was selected to be one of Deutsche Bank’s two UK Charities of the Year for 2018 and 2019, a partnership that has raised £2m and made its nationwide transition possible.

A team of 18 amateur cyclists have ridden into Paris, the 21 st and final stage of The Tour 21 event, as heroes on Sunday following the announcement that their fundraising had topped £1million for national blood cancer charity, Cure Leukaemia.

The team have spent the past three weeks cycling across Spain and France as part of The Tour 21 , in partnership with Flutter , on behalf of the charity – a feat which has seen them complete all stages of the Tour de France – one week ahead of the professionals. Made up of cyclists from across the world, the team completed all 3,400km of the world’s most famous and prestigious professional cycling event.

The team rolled out of Bilbao on Saturday 24 th June, soaking up the atmosphere of the soon-to-arrive Tour de France event, branding of which had already decorated the city. Three tough stages across Spain provided a stern introduction to Tour life before many French mountains awaited them.

The 16 men and 2 women making up The Tour 21 team this year have been pushed to their physical limits in what has been the most mountainous Tour of recent years. Five mountain ranges were tackled in total – the Pyrenees, Massif Central, Jura, Alps and Vosge – including the dreaded Col de Joux Plane and the mighty Col de la Loze, and the Puy de Dôme. Over the course of the 21 stages, the team, representing four different countries from across the globe, cycled over 55,000m of elevation – the equivalent of climbing Mount Everest over six times – or 183 Eiffel Towers.

All funds raised by The Tour 21 team will be invested in the national Trials Acceleration Programme (TAP) which has been solely funded by Cure Leukaemia since January 2020. The TAP Network is a network of specialist Research Nurses at 15 blood cancer centres located in the UK’s biggest cities. This network enables accelerated setup and delivery of potentially life-saving blood cancer clinical trials to run giving patients from a UK catchment area of over 20 million people access to treatments not currently available through standard care.

One of this year’s riders Professor Rob Wynn, a Consultant Haematologist at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital said: “ Twenty-one stages of the Tour de France done. I just want to say thank you to everyone who supported the team throughout the past three weeks.”

“Personally, I had to find mental and physical resistance that I honestly didn’t know I had. I have to live the Tour, and I mean really live it in a constant eat, sleep, ride, rest cycle.

“Most importantly and rather incredibly, the team raised over £1million. This is a super special feeling and I promise it will make a difference and we will help save lives that would otherwise be lost to this disease.”

Cure Leukaemia Chief Executive James McLaughlin, who was in Paris to greet the team past the finish line expressed his admiration for all 18 cyclists and support crew for completing The Tour on behalf of the charity and helping to save lives.

“It is simply staggering what the team have tackled over the past 21 days to not only raise funds for Cure Leukaemia but also raise awareness of blood cancer across the world.”

“I think what the last three weeks has been a unique sense of team spirit, camaraderie and dedication. Taking on all 21 stages of the Tour de France is unique and to pass the £1million mark on their arrival into Paris is something that they should be immensely proud of. This is, without a doubt, one of the most gruelling sporting challenges in the world and behalf of Cure Leukaemia, I am just immensely proud of every single one of them.”

“What they have done is put their bodies on the line to raise funds for Cure Leukaemia, and for that, we will be forever grateful.”

Cure Leukaemia Co-Founder Professor Charlie Craddock CBE said: “ The team may not be aware, but their bravery, their commitment to people who urgently need our help for new treatments and their vision that we can make the future better has galvanised the UK blood cancer community.”

“The team have inspired blood cancer patients across the UK who are profoundly moved by the bravery that they have shown. And also, of course, critically, they have raised vital money to support Cure Leukaemia.”

“The work that Professor Rob Wynn and his colleagues do in the UK is something that we should all be incredibly proud of with its globally significant results. I continue this from the bottom of my heart – without your work, your commitment and your ability to dig so deep on so many days, on so many occasions is so inspiring.”

“So we should celebrate not only their amazing personal achievements, not only this model where people through altruism, through generosity, through compassion give of themselves to change other peoples lives.”

Flutter’s Group Head of Communities, Kerry McNally said ,  “We are thrilled to have reached the £1 million donation mark in support of The Tour 21 Riders as the challenge comes to a close.”

“Through Cure Leukaemia’s Trials Acceleration Programme (TAP), the money raised by the Tour 21 will support a new clinical trial for patients living with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL). As headline sponsors, we are immensely proud to be a part of the effort to eradicate this disease.”

“This partnership brings together our passion for sport with our commitment to Do More, helping support the communities in which we operate, and with the aim of helping 10 million people by the end of 2030. The money raised across the event will help us to achieve this goal and we’re excited to continue working with the Cure Leukaemia team.”

Release: gottheimer, goldman lead 21 democratic members of congress urging columbia university’s board of trustees to protect jewish students, disband encampment, reminds columbia’s board of their legal obligation to protect students from identity-based harassment.

WASHINGTON, DC  — Today, April 29, 2024, U.S. Representatives Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5) and Dan Goldman (NY-10) led a letter signed by a group of twenty-one Members of Congress urging Columbia University’s Board of Trustees to disband the encampment located on its campus.

For the past week, this encampment has been the breeding ground for antisemitic attacks on Jewish students, including hate speech, harassment, intimidation, and even threats of violence. Last weekend, a student  held up a sign  pointing to pro-Israel students that said “Al-Qa[ss]am’s next targets,” referring to the military arm of Hamas, the foreign terrorist organization responsible for the atrocities of October 7, and for holding hostage innocent civilians – including Americans – in brutal captivity for nearly seven months.

One of the protest leaders has also  previously declared , “Zionists — they are Nazis. They’re Nazis. They’re fascists. They’re supporters of genocide. Why would we want people who are supporters of genocide to live?” and students routinely chanted “from the river to the sea,” which is a cry to eliminate Israel and all Jews within its borders.

The White House has already  roundly condemned the encampment at Columbia , stating “While every American has the right to peaceful protest, calls for violence and physical intimidation targeting Jewish students and the Jewish community are blatantly antisemitic, unconscionable, and dangerous – they have absolutely no place on any college campus, or anywhere in the United States of America.”

The signatory list of twenty-one Members of Congress includes Reps. Gottheimer (NJ-5), Goldman (NY-10), Hoyer (MD-5), Cuellar (TX-28), Frankel (FL-22), Landsman (OH-1), Manning (NC-6), Menendez (NJ-8), Moskowitz (FL-23), Nickel (NC-13), Norcross (NJ-1), Pappas (NH-1), Phillips (MN-3), Schiff (CA-30), Schneider (IL-10), Soto (FL-9), Stevens (MI-11), Suozzi (NY-3), Torres (NY-15), Veasey (TX-33), and Wasserman Schultz (FL-25).

“The First Amendment guarantees freedom of speech and assembly, but not freedom to harass and intimidate other students,”  wrote twenty-one Members of Congress in a letter to Columbia University’s Board of Trustees.  “Academic institutions must ensure the safety and security of all of their students under Title VI. It is clear to us that the University has allowed the encampment to create an environment that appears to violate its legal obligations to protect all students from discrimination and harassment. As a result, many students who are paying for an education — supported by the federal government — cannot safely attend class, enter the library, or leave their dorm rooms.”

The members continued,  “After nearly a week of negotiations, it is now abundantly clear that the students and activists entrenched on campus are unwilling to enter into a reasonable agreement to disband, which is necessary to bring the University into compliance with Title VI. Those who violate the law cannot dictate the terms of the University’s ability to comply with that law. It is past time for the University to act decisively, disband the encampment, and ensure the safety and security of all of its students.”

Full text of the letter sent to Columbia University’s Trustees can be found here and below:

April 29, 2024

Columbia University in the City of New York

The Trustees of Columbia University C/O Office of the Secretary 211 Low Library

535 West 116th Street New York, NY 10027

To the Trustees of Columbia University:

We, the undersigned, write to express our disappointment that, despite promises to do so, Columbia University has not yet disbanded the unauthorized and impermissible encampment of anti-Israel, anti-Jewish activists on campus. As a result of this disruption on campus, supported by some faculty members, many students have been prevented from safely attending class, the main library, and from leaving their dorm rooms in an apparent violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act.

One of the protest leaders has previously declared, “Zionists — they are Nazis. They’re Nazis. They’re fascists. They’re supporters of genocide. Why would we want people who are supporters of genocide to live?” and students routinely chanted “from the river to the sea,” which is a cry to eliminate Israel and all Jews within its borders.

In response, the White House has rightly stated, “While every American has the right to peaceful protest, calls for violence and physical intimidation targeting Jewish students and the Jewish community are blatantly antisemitic, unconscionable, and dangerous – they have absolutely no place on any college campus, or anywhere in the United States of America.”

Earlier this week, the Columbia administration tacitly acknowledged that the encampment had created an impermissibly hostile and unsafe environment for Jewish students by resorting to hybrid learning, appearing to violate Title VI of the Civil Rights Act. In other words, instead of solving the root cause of discrimination and harassment that students faced on campus, the administration decided to segregate some students from campus altogether, which naturally created an unsafe environment on campus for all students.

The First Amendment guarantees freedom of speech and assembly, but not freedom to harass and intimidate other students. Academic institutions must ensure the safety and security of all of their students under Title VI. It is clear to us that the University has allowed the encampment to create an environment that appears to violate its legal obligations to protect all students from discrimination and harassment. As a result, many students who are paying for an education — supported by the federal government — cannot safely attend class, enter the library, or leave their dorm rooms.

We appreciate the Columbia administration’s efforts this week to negotiate in good faith to reach an agreement that allows those in the encampment to voluntarily disburse without police intervention. But, after nearly a week of negotiations, it is now abundantly clear that the students and activists entrenched on campus are unwilling to enter into a reasonable agreement to disband, which is necessary to bring the University into compliance with Title VI.

Those who violate the law cannot dictate the terms of the University’s ability to comply with that law. It is past time for the University to act decisively, disband the encampment, and ensure the safety and security of all of its students.

The time for negotiation is over; the time for action is now. It is ultimately the responsibility of the Board of Trustees to act. If any Trustees are unwilling to do this, they should resign so that they can be replaced by individuals who will uphold the University’s legal obligations under Title VI.

tour 21 just giving

The team, made up of 18 amateur cyclists from across the world, have worked as a team to make their way across Spain and France across three and a half weeks.

The team set off from Bilbao on Saturday 24th June 2023 and followed the same 21-stage route as the pros, riding over 3,500km in just 21 days - all to raise over £1,000,000 for Cure Leukaemia, the official charity partner of the Tour de France in the UK.

Fundraising from the challenge is directly invested in the Trials Acceleration Programme (TAP) which helps those fighting the cancer across the globe, including three-time Tour de France winner Greg LeMond, who last year announced he is battling Chronic Myelogenous Leukaemia.

On behalf of our Doctors, Nurses and most importantly our brave patients, thank you for your generous support!
