Tour of Britain 2023 overview
The Tour of Britain is an eight-day race that offers up a gentler alternative to the Vuelta a España taking place on the continent. Taking place across England and Wales from September 3-10, this year's edition has a sprinter-friendly route that's rounded out with a mouthwatering Queen stage in South Wales.
The stage race's varied terrain typically favours the puncheurs of the peloton, with Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal-Quick Step), Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) and Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) all getting their hands on the overall title since 2018.
The latter of those stars returns to the race this year, alongside another highly talented multi-disciplinarian in Tom Pidcock (Ineos Grenadiers). Also on the startlist is his Spanish teammate Carlos Rodríguez and Irishman Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe).

Tour of Britain 2023 contenders
The combination of many sprinter-friendly stages and a testing Queen stage on the final day of this year's Tour of Britain mean a whole host of riders could find success in England and Wales.
Overall winner in 2021, Wout van Aert ( Jumbo-Visma ) returns to the race as a hot favourite alongside Tom Pidcock ( Ineos Grenadiers ). Both riders could threaten on just about any of the parcours.
Several fastmen will be hoping to scoop up stage victories with Olav Kooij (Jumbo-Visma) and Ethan Vernon (Great Britain) arriving at the race on the back of promising seasons, whilst an out-of-form Sam Bennett ( Bora-Hansgrohe ) will hope to challenge too.
Stage 8 includes four category one climbs and will likely decide the overall. Expect the likes of Carlos Rodríguez (Ineos Grenadiers) Tobias Halland Johannessen ( Uno-X Pro Cycling ), Mark Donovan ( Q36.5 Pro Cycling ), Stephen Williams (Great Britain) and Carlos Verona ( Movistar ) to come to the fore alongside Pidcock and van Aert.

What happened in the Tour of Britain 2022?
The 2022 Tour of Britain was cut short following stage 5 due to the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
Movistar's Gonzalo Serrano was crowned the overall winner ahead of Ineos Grenadiers' Tom Pidcock. The pair matched either other blow-for-blow during the five days of racing that did take place but the Spaniard decisively edged out Pidcock to win stage 4 in Duncombe Park, Helmsley, meaning he was ahead by three bonus seconds when the race was curtailed.
Tour of Britain history
The Tour of Britain has established itself as the leading men’s stage race in Great Britain. The race is now in its 19th year and regularly attracts a mix of WorldTour teams and UK-based squads. The race is often used as a stepping stone and preparation event ahead of the UCI Road World Championships but that element has been taken away by the decision to host the Worlds earlier in the 2023 season. That said, the Tour of Britain is still expected to produce exciting racing between some of the best riders in the world.
In 2022 Gonzalo Serrano (Movistar Team) came out on top to win the overall ahead of the Ineos Grenadiers pairing of Tom Pidcock and Omar Fraile. Other former winners include Wout van Aert, Mathieu van der Poel, Julian Alaphilippe and former Tour de France winner, Bradley Wiggins. Sprinter Mark Cavendish currently holds the record for the most Tour of Britain stage wins with 10 victories spanning his long and decorated career.

TOUR OF BRITAIN 2021 STAGE 7 RESULTS
Yves Lampaert won the penultimate stage of the Tour of Britain on Saturday as home hope Ethan Hayter maintained his slender lead over Wout van Aert in the overall standings. This year’s first stage in Scotland, a 121-mile affair, was dominated by a six-strong breakaway group, with Lampaert then outsprinting Matteo Jorgenson and Matt Gibson to the finish line in Edinburgh’s Holyrood Park. Lampaert’s Belgian compatriot Van Aert had halved Hayter’s lead on Friday but the Londoner kept his advantage at four seconds heading into Sunday’s final stage after the pair finished within the peloton on Saturday.
“It was a good day all round because we kept the jersey and have one day left to go,” said Ineos Grenadiers cyclist Hayter, bidding to become the first British champion of this event in five years.
“It’s probably going to kick off tomorrow (Sunday), it always does on the last day of a stage race. I’ll do my best to beat Wout if it does come to a sprint.”
The tour concludes with a 107 mile stage from Stonehaven to Aberdeen in northeast Scotland.

‘Monumental effort’ means Women’s Tour of Britain goes ahead in 2024
- Condensed four-stage race begins in Welshpool on 6 June
- Lizzie Deignan: ‘I’m grateful to the people who have pulled it off’
British Cycling has named the host towns for this summer’s Tour of Britain Women after what has been described as “monumental effort” to make sure the race goes ahead.
Ten weeks after the Guardian reported the governing body would organise the race in-house following the collapse of SweetSpot group, the outline of the route has been unveiled, with an opening stage starting in Welshpool and finishing in Llandudno on 6 June.
Stage two will start and finish in Wrexham, stage three will begin and end in Warrington, and the final stage will start outside the National Cycling Centre in Manchester and finish in Leigh on 9 June.
This year’s race will be limited to four stages – down from six for the previous edition of the Women’s Tour in 2022 – due to the time restrictions British Cycling has faced, but there is an ambition to grow in the future.
Rod Ellingworth, the former deputy team principal of the Ineos Grenadiers who joined as race director last month, said: “It’s been a monumental effort by the whole team over the past 10 weeks to confirm the stages for this year’s Tour of Britain Women.”
The governing body’s chief executive, Jon Dutton, admitted there had been “many” moments in the last 10 weeks where he feared the race might not take place. “I dare say with 52 days to go there will be a few more bumps in the road,” Dutton said.
“We’ve had local authorities, start towns and finish towns who’ve said: ‘We’re in’ and then subsequently said: ‘We’re not in’ and that’s difficult. We’ve always had the idea of a condensed, compact race and when one pulls out that’s an issue across the board.”
British Cycling is also working on the men’s Tour of Britain, with that race due to take place over six days in September rather than the usual eight.
Dutton added that British Cycling is continuing to seek further investment for what he described as two “expensive races”. Much of the money will come from hosting fees and broadcast contracts, close to being agreed but not yet finalised, but there is a need for more commercial revenue.
All six of the UK’s UCI Continental level teams have signed up for the women’s race, and the former world champion Lizzie Deignan will swap her Lidl-Trek jersey for Britain colours to lead a national squad.
after newsletter promotion
“Sometimes it’s easy to underestimate how much it takes to put on a race so I’m really grateful to the people who have pulled it off against the odds,” Deignan said.
The 35-year-old wants to use the race to prepare for a busy summer which will hopefully include the Paris Olympics, but admitted the broken arm she suffered in a crash at last month’s Tour of Flanders had come at a bad time.
“The main concern for me is it’s during Olympic selection time so I’ve missed a good chunk of races I was peaking for in terms of getting selected,” said Deignan. “There’s plenty of time until the Olympics itself to get fit and ready, but selection is harder than it’s ever been so it’s obviously bad timing.”

2024 NFL Draft rumors: Raiders could select QB Michael Penix Jr. at No. 13 overall
Vegas is in the market for another quarterback.
The 2024 NFL Draft is right around the corner, and one of the biggest questions we are wondering is how many quarterbacks will go in the first round, and in what order they will be selected. USC's Caleb Williams is the probable No. 1 overall pick, but what happens after that is anyone's guess.
Drake Maye and Jayden Daniels are the favorites to go No. 2 and No. 3 overall in some order, and then comes the question of J.J. McCarthy -- whose stock appears to be soaring. The Minnesota Vikings have an extra 2024 first-round pick to offer in potential trade talks, but the Las Vegas Raiders and Denver Broncos could be eyeing quarterbacks as well. Could they stick and pick in the middle of the first round, trade up or even trade down and select a quarterback? According to a new report, the Raiders may have zeroed in on their guy.
ESPN's Matt Miller wrote this week that he's heard the Raiders really like Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr., and could select him with their first pick at No. 13 overall. This is actually something CBS Sports NFL Draft expert Ryan Wilson predicted earlier this month, mocking Penix to Vegas at No. 13 .
Penix is an interesting prospect who put together two strong campaigns after suffering season-ending injuries four straight years from 2018-21 during his time at Indiana. After transferring to Washington, Penix recorded two straight 4,600+ yard campaigns, and was even the 2023 Heisman Trophy runner-up.
Penix led the FBS in passing yards last season with 4,903, becoming the first Washington quarterback to accomplish the feat. He also became the first player since Patrick Mahomes to register multiple seasons of 4,500+ passing yards and 30 passing touchdowns. Penix has a big arm, and led the FBS in completions (60) and passing touchdowns (26) of 25+ air yards over the past two years. His 37 completions of 25+ air yards in 2023 were the most by any quarterback in the FBS over the past five seasons.
At quarterback, the Raiders currently have Aidan O'Connell , who Vegas selected in the fourth round last year, and they also signed Gardner Minshew , formerly of the Indianapolis Colts . He made the Pro Bowl last year after going 7-6 in the place of Anthony Richardson , while completing 62.2% of his passes for 3,305 yards, 15 touchdowns and nine interceptions. However, the Raiders appear to still be in the market for a quarterback.

Tour of Britain 2021: Race Preview
Eight-day race returns after COVID-19 cancellation with formidable field including hard to beat Alaphilippe and Van Aert
After a one-year hiatus due to COVID-19 the Tour of Britain returns with eight days of racing that visit some of the best cycling terrain that England, Wales and Scotland have to offer.
Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma), Mark Cavendish (Deceuninck-QuickStep) and world champion Julian Alaphillipe (Deceuninck-QuickStep) headline the race for obvious reasons but there is genuine depth to this year’s field. Several WorldTour teams are absent from the official startlist but important ProTeam as well as the British domestic teams head to the race with hopes of competing against some of the biggest names in the sport.
The race runs from September 5 to September 12 and incorporates at least three days for the sprinters, a decisive team time trial on stage 3 and several brutally demanding stages that will shape and decide the final overall standings in Aberdeen.
While many riders will inevitably be using the Tour of Britain to fine-tune their form for the World Championships in Flanders, the course and the strong line-up has the potential to create an excellent short stage race.
The contenders
Despite having one eye on the World Championships later in September the dynamic duo of Wout van Aert (Jumbo Visma) and Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-QuickStep) will both start as prime contenders for the overall title.
Both riders head into the race with the needed skillsets to triumph on the demanding course, while their squads should more than hold their own in the team time trial.
Alaphilippe – the 2018 winner – and Van Aert – currently the most complete rider in the WorldTour – will face stern opposition with Ineos Grenadiers sending a talented team comprising of Rohan Dennis, Michal Kwiatkowski, Richie Porte and the highly-rated youngsters Ethan Hayter and Carlos Rodriguez.
Movistar sends a clutch of high calibre riders in Marc Soler and Matteo Jorgenson, while Israel Start-Up Nation arrives with Dan Martin, Michael Woods and Alex Dowsett to lead the line.
Trinity Racing includes several promising riders in their roster with Thomas Gloag, WorldTour bound Ben Healy, and Luke Lamperti among their contingent. Ribble brings a revitalised James Shaw, as well as true depth, while Rally Cycling, Team DSM, Alpecin-Fenix, and the Great Britain Nation team all send squads packed with depth and riders to watch.
The sprinters
Mark Cavendish (Deceuninck-QuickStep) may not have won since his incredible Tour de France but he heads to the Tour of Britain as the rider to beat in the sprints.
The British rider has won more Tour of Britain stages than any other rider in the race’s history with ten victories in total, and although he lacks his Tour de France leadout man Michael Mørkøv, there’s more than enough power in the Deceuninck-QuickStep team to set him up.
Veteran Andre Greipel (Israel Start–Up Nation) continues his final season with a return to the race in which he has taken seven stage wins over the years, while Greg Van Avermaet’s (AG2R Citroën) overall versatility will ensure that he could potentially compete for every stage.
Hayter (Ineos Grenadiers) and Dan McLay (Team Arkea-Samsic) lead the line for the rest of the British riders while Max Kanter (Team DSM) and Colin Joyce (Rally Cycling) – who recently won a stage in the Tour of Denmark – could also be in contention.
The 2021 Tour of Britain follows a long south to north route and commences with a 180km stage from Penzance to Bodmin with the peloton taking in some of the most picturesque of Cornwall’s countryside.
The scenery will be of little consideration to the riders, especially with an uphill start and two third category climbs positioned in the first hour of racing. There are two intermediate sprints and a further third category climb to come but this could be a decisive day for the overall, and if the weather worsens the stage could provide some genuine definition within the overall standings.
The finale is especially tough with a 500-metre long climb with pitches at 13 per cent set to ensure that the pure sprinters are distanced. If the right break goes early this stage could decide the race.
Stage 2 of the race starts in the village of Sherford and takes the race 183.9km north to Exeter. With three tough second category climbs on the menu, it’s a day for a break to establish a sizeable lead – especially with KOM points up for grabs – but the sprinters' teams will aim to control proceedings with the last categorised climb peaking out at 150km into the stage. There are still two more decent inclines before the finish but a reduced bunch should contest the win.
After taking in Cornwall and Devon during the first two stages the race heads into Wouth Wales with the crucial team time trial between Llandeilo and the National Botanic Garden of Wales.
At 18.2km the course will favour the most dialled-in teams and several of the domestic teams will target this particular day with greater emphasis and precision.
The stage itself starts out flat and keeps that format before a gentle rise after roughly 12km. After a short descent the road kicks up for a second time with a longer and most sustained effort before a final descent and a flat run-in.
Stage 4 is the Queen stage and another true GC day that’s littered with climbing.
The race starts in Aberaeron and heads directly north for a finish in Great Orme, Llandudno. The 210km stage heads through the Snowdonia National Park with the first category climb of Eidda’s Well. That ascent will split the race but there should be a general re-grouping, though the penultimate climb and then the last ascent to the line in Orme will split the race to pieces. The final climb is 1.9km in length and averages 9.8 per cent so the time gaps could be significant.
Stage 5 sees the race spin in the direction of the sprinters but in true Tour of Britain fashion, the fastmen will have to work for their rewards with the organisers sticking three categorised climbs into the middle portion of the 152.2km stage between Alderley Park and Warrington. The run-in is flat and given that the previous four days were built towards the break and GC, this could possible be the first bunch sprint of the entire race.
After the sprinter’s chance to shine on stage 5 the race heads back into the hills with the Pennines playing host to a demanding 198km stage between Carlisle and Gateshead.
There’s rarely a meter of flat but the three first category ascents in the middle of the stage will stretch an already weary peloton before the race ventures further east and towards an iconic finish by the Angel of the North. It’s another uphill finish with stage 6 representing the last finish on English soil before the race dips into Scotland for the remaining stages.
Harwick makes its Tour of Britain debut on stage 7 with the race heading to Edinburgh for its first stage finish. There are three sprints and three classified climbs but the sprinters are likely to decide the outcome of the stage with a flat run-in.
The final stage from Stonehaven to Aberdeen takes the race as far north as it has ever been with another tough and undulating day in the saddle as the race ticks off the final 173km of 2021 edition.
Depending on the lie of the land in the overall standings heading into the stage this could see a final flourish from the GC riders but another sprint is the most likely outcome before the curtain comes down on the Tour of Britain for another year.
