GREECE 2022 TOURISM FIGURES SET TO REACH PRE-PANDEMIC FIGURES

Greece has become the eu’s spectacular summer hit as the number of tourists to the country has, once again, been hitting a million per week in august 2022..

Greek authorities are optimistic that this year’s tourism figures for 2022 could reach – and even surpass – its pre-Covid levels.

Early indications for Greece tourism are that this year will be close or even break its 2019 record of 33 million arrivals and that the total of €18 billion in tourism revenues could be surpassed. Summer 2022 seems to be bringing record after record in total arrivals each month.

For the first six months of the year, the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority reported over 22.4 million passengers, a figure up by 270% over 2021 and only down by 9.4% over 2019. For the first time in June 2022, international passengers number stood above corresponding figures of 2019. With 3.48 million passengers on international flights in June 2022, Greek airports recorded 0.1% more travellers than in the same month of 2019 (3.47 million travellers).

The trend is likely to continue as pointed out by Greece’s Tourism Minister Vassilis Kikilias in a recent interview with the Greek newspaper ‘Proto Thema’. “More than one million tourists are expected every week in Greece in Augus,” he said. “In July, total tourist arrivals exceeded 900,000 every week.”

Greece “is set to see unprecedented figures in arrivals and in tourism industry earnings in the month of August, surpassing even the record-breaking numbers of 2019,” added Kikilias.

Greece

Germany, Britain, Balkan countries and the USA are leading the recovery

Monitoring data about tourist arrivals, the Minister reported that the number of German and British tourists to the country in July, had already surpassed the record of 2019 in many destinations across the country, including Rhodes and Crete.

Arrivals are also progressing rapidly at Athens International Airport with July 2022 figures surpassing 2019 figures. In July, the airport recorded a rise of 257% in travellers from Serbia and an increase of 177% in travellers from Turkey. Arrivals from more traditional markets such as Germany and France grew respectively by 29% and 15% in July. Total tourist arrivals from the USA are also up by 50% compared to 2019.

“This year, Greece will be the number one destination for travellers from France and Israel,” predicted Vassilis Kikilias in his interview. “Greece is very high on the list for travellers from the Balkans – particularly Bulgaria – and in the top three destinations for travellers from Germany and Scandinavia.”

Tourism is proving, once again, that it is Greece’s ‘heavyweight industry’ as it supports the national economy but also create jobs for a population severely impacted by unemployment.

According to data from the WTTC , travel and tourism generated prior to the Covid crisis 20.7% of Greece’s total GDP and provided jobs for 820,000 people. After contracting in 2020 to 9.2% of total GDP and 708,000 jobs, 2021 saw travel and tourism bounce back strongly. Last year, travel and tourism generated again 14.9% of Greece total economy while employing over 780,000 people. It confirms that 2022 would then see the tourism industry returning to its pre-pandemic figures and may even surpass them.

2023 Record-Breaking Tourist Season In Greece

Despite the ongoing challenges, the 2023 tourist season in Greece concludes on a positive note, and a new record in tourist numbers.

Tourism in Greece hits all-time high

The 2023 tourist season in Greece wraps up with great success

Despite facing numerous challenges, the 2023 tourist season in Greece will conclude on a high note.

A church in Santorini Greece

This year, certain major tour operators have chosen to extend their programs this year. As a result, a few prominent hotels, primarily located in Crete and Rhodes will remain operational until mid-November.

In 2023, the tourism season in Greece kicked off with very high expectations. Last year’s great recovery after COVID, in combination with an excellent start of the season, led to a lot of excitement and optimism in the tourism industry.

Indeed, the 2023 season commenced in February, witnessing the arrival of predominantly German tourists in the Peloponnese. They were all eager to indulge in a round of golf at the magnificent Costa Navarino courses .

In early March, TUI encouraged travelers to quickly secure their holiday bookings in Greece, as 50% of hotel rooms in various destinations have already been reserved.

Around mid-March, hotels and local authorities in Crete, Rhodes , Corfu , Santorini , Halkidiki and other areas started welcoming their first guests, who came primarily from European countries.

The famous Paleokastritsa in Corfu

As we moved into mid-April and May, an increasing number of smaller hotels and rooms to let in major destinations, such as the Cyclades , opened their doors to visitors.

A promising start, but a disappointing follow-up

The celebration of Catholic and Greek Orthodox Easter drew numerous foreign tourists to our country, enriching their holiday experience and contributing to increased traffic in April.

However, the month of May proved to be a disappointment for hoteliers nationwide, defying expectations and abruptly bringing the April season to a halt. Hotels in nearly every destination experienced moderate occupancy rates and a lack of anticipated last-minute bookings.

There were multiple factors contributing to this, including the significant rise in airfare prices and the increase in rates for Greek hotels. As a result, the cost of organized packages surged by up to 30%.

Despite the record arrivals reported by the country’s airports, hoteliers, catering services, and trade were left unsatisfied. The “pie” is now divided among many, as there has been a significant increase in both hotel beds and AirBnB accommodations.

Sunset in Ios Greece

Additionally, foreign tourists did not spend as extravagantly as they did in 2022, but rather showed moderation.

Late June was a turning point for tourism

Starting in June, hoteliers nationwide launched sales and promotions to attract last-minute bookings for the remaining summer season.

The first weeks of June were plagued by unpredictable weather, which posed additional challenges. Fortunately, the last ten days of the month marked a turning point, bringing some much-needed stability to the industry.

The following months showed a positive trend, as nearly all tourist destinations experienced a rise in foreign visitor numbers. The cruising industry, in particular, witnessed a significant surge.

However, this growth has brought increased scrutiny to popular ports like Mykonos and Santorini . The high volume of disembarking passengers has put a strain on public infrastructure and inconvenienced visitors staying on the islands.

Unprecedented numbers of arrivals in 2023

Based on the data collected until September, Greece has been steadily approaching the number of international air arrivals recorded in 2022. This doesn’t take into account the official figures for October, which have not been released yet.

By the end of September, Greece has already welcomed a staggering 21 million tourists, almost reaching the total arrivals of 21.3 million recorded in 2022.

So, even if air arrivals in the last quarter of 2023 return to levels seen in the previous year, Greece is on track to set an all-time record , with over 23.5 million tourists arriving via air travel.

Meanwhile, road tourism is displaying notable signs of recovery after experiencing a steep decline in the previous year. While it may not reach the levels seen in 2019, when it surpassed 12 million tourists, the optimistic trend is certainly encouraging.

Quaint Skopelos Town Greece

This trend highlights the growing momentum and positive trajectory of Greece’s tourism industry, a remarkable achievement considering all circumstances.

Record-breaking earnings

In terms of tourism earnings, the Bank of Greece’s figures for the first eight months of 2023 appear to support the initial estimates, which projected over 20 billion euros.

From January to August 2023, travel earnings saw a notable increase of 15.3% compared to the same period in 2022, reaching a total of 14.6 billion euros.

With four months remaining to be accounted for, optimistic estimations suggest further growth.

The winners and losers of the season

According to the data, Athens has emerged as the top-performing destination this season. The Greek capital is rapidly establishing itself as a sought-after destination, with Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport reporting monthly double-digit growth in international passenger traffic.

Thessaloniki emerges as the second top-performing destination, boasting a remarkable 20% surge in passenger traffic from abroad between January and September. Notably, Kavala and Mytilini also experienced significant double-digit growth.

Thessaloniki - The White Tower

Corfu witnessed a commendable increase of over 8%, while Chania saw nearly 8% growth. Kos and Heraklion exhibited more modest yet positive performance, with a 5.5% and 5% increase, respectively.

Despite the huge challenges posed by the devastating forest fires in July, Rhodes concluded the list with a growth rate of 2%.

Following the remarkable surge they witnessed in 2022, Santorini and Mykonos experienced a decrease in tourist arrivals this year. However, it is important to note that the decline only amounts to a few thousand tourists for each destination.

Let’s see what 2024 brings!

Greece sees spike in US tourist arrivals in 2022

Greece sees spike in US tourist arrivals in 2022

The increase in regular flights offered by US airlines to Athens and Thessaloniki has helped to greatly boost tourist flows from the United States, the American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA) for the region of Greece said on Friday.

The Greek chapter of ASTA was awarded for the second year as the fastest growing internationally.

The agreement reached with US airlines for 63 direct flights per week from the US Athens’  international airport resulted in many “high-spenders” visiting Greece. According to statistics, the average American’s travel budget reaches 2,000 US dollars per person per week, of which 25% is spent on accommodation and 15% on food.

“Greece is among the distinguished destinations of ASTA, especially for this year,” said Leonidas Babanis, president of the American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA) for the Greece-Cyprus region.

Tourism Minister Vassilis Kikilias said on Friday this data confirms Greece’s strategy for 63 direct flights every week from the US, adding that the increase in wealthy visitors has given and continues to give added value to tourism revenues by strengthening entrepreneurs and employees in the sectors of accommodation, catering, and commerce.

Upward Trends for Tourist Arrivals by Road, Car Rentals in Greece

tourist arrivals in greece 2022

The number of tourists arriving by road to Greece is expected to increase this year on the back of a 30.45 percent rise in road arrivals in 2023, found data released by INSETE , the Greek Tourism Confederation’s (SETE) research body.

More specifically, international arrivals by road through Greece’s border check points exceeded 10.4 million in 2023 up from 8 million in 2022.

At the same time, strong incoming tourist flows to Greece are also driving car rentals up . According to INSETE data, car rentals dropped in 2020 as a result of the pandemic but sales recovered in 2023, when more than 1.1 million people used the car for a main means of transport up from 910,000 in 2022.

tourist arrivals in greece 2022

Overall, car rentals in 2023 generated a total of 252 million euros in revenues compared to 223 million euros in 2022 marking a 13 percent rise. However when compared to pre-Covid 2019, revenues were down by 3 percent over 260 million euros.

Market insiders are expecting car rental activity to reach new highs this year despite increasing competition and illegally operating companies at popular destinations.

According to INSETE, online sales last year were close to 2022 levels, which accounted for 46 percent of all sales compared to 54 percent offline. Online sales have been on an upward trend since 2018, when online sales represented 44 percent of all sales compared to 56 percent offline.
