Green Grotto Caves

The Green Grotto caves, also known as the Runaway Caves, are located just under 2 miles from the spot at which Christopher Columbus landed in 1494. The caves were a haven for runaway slaves in the 18th Century and between the two World Wars, were used by smugglers running arms to Cuba. The Grotto Caves were sought after as a hideout by the Spanish during the takeover of the island by the English in 1655. The Green Grotto caves feature a series of interconnected passageways and chambers, light holes, stalactites and stalagmites, as well as two lakes. Your guide will explain the nature of the tour and take you on a 45min walking tour through the caves. It is strongly recommended to wear proper footwear. The highlight of the Green Grotto Caves tour is the descend into the innermost cavern, where visitors will see a crystal-clear underground lake.

Doctor's Cave Beach

Try soaking in the turquoise waters of the family-friendly Doctor's Cave Beach. Although it's a private beach and requires an entrance fee, it has excellent restrooms and plenty of lounge chairs and umbrellas to rent. Doctor's Cave Beach can be located in the heart of Hip Strip (Gloucester Avenue) and is one of the most popular beaches in the area.

Dead End Beach

Don't let the name fool you, Dead End Beach is another great option. It's a public beach at the far end of Hip Strip, and it's often quieter than other surrounding beaches. However, no entrance fees mean no restroom or shower facilities. There aren't a lot of restaurants and bars around, but you can still find vendors in the area. The clear waters, decent sand, and low traffic make it very appealing.

Dunn's River Falls

A hop and a skip away from Ocho Rios, the world-famous Dunn's River Falls is a unique 180-foot high, 600-foot long landmark. It embodies the natural beauty and wonder of Jamaica. Cancellation Policy

• Any cancellations made at least forty-eight (48) hours or more shall not attract a cancellation fee.
• Any cancellation made less than 48 hours but more than 24 hours in advance of the scheduled tour time, will attract fifty percent (50%) penalty.  
• Any cancellation made within twenty-four (24) hours or on the same day that the booking is made will attract one hundred percent (100%) penalty.
• All cancellations must be submitted in writing to the Company and received by Chukka Caribbean Adventures within the timeframes outlined above to be eligible for a refund.

Bogue, Montego Bay, hit by freak storm

A section of Bogue in Montego Bay, St James, in the vicinity of the sewage plant, was hit by a freak storm, causing damage to some buildings, including the National Water Commission (NWC) office on Thursday. 

About 2:45 p.m., dark clouds covered the skies and strong winds forced people to run for cover, according to Vinnette Brown, a mango vendor. 

“I just hear a loud bang and when I look, breeze, rain and it blow off the tarpaulin off my stall. I had to rush in my van,” Brown stated. 

“Zinc and everything coming down. I was so frightened. Me and my husband we had to rush in the van and get some rescue. Heavy rain, traffic jam, it wasn't anything good,” she added. 

Brown told The Gleaner that she was thankful there was no loss of life.

“What don't cost life, don't cost anything. The mangoes are pretty and I am still here selling,” Brown said. 

A tour of the area revealed, that a section of the roof of the NWC office had caved in and water damaged offices on the top floor.

In other areas of Bogue tree limbs, fences and signs were torn down and littered the road. 

Workers from the St James Municipal Corporation were seen fixing signs that were damaged by the freak storm.

Montego Bay Jerk Fest set for 15th staging on August 1

ST JAMES, Jamaica— The popular Montego Bay Jerk Fest has reached a milestone with the 15th staging slated to take place on August 1.

The event will be held at the Catherine Hall Entertainment Centre in Montego Bay, St James where patrons are expected to benefit from the culinary delights of Jamaican cuisine.

This year’s event promises an extraordinary celebration of food, music and culture according to public relations officer for the group, Jolene Longman-Boreman following its press launch on Wednesday.

“As the premier jerk and food festival in the region, it will continue to attract thousands of locals and tourists alike, eager to indulge in Jamaica’s finest culinary offerings and entertainment,” she remarked.

President of the Montego Bay Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Oral Heaven, also praised the event for its impact on the local economy over the years.

“The significance of this event extends far beyond its culinary delights. It’s a powerful economic driver for local businesses. Vendors, chefs, you name it, they have a platform to showcase their products, reach new customers and increase their revenue from being a part of this festival,” he said.

“The ripple effect on local businesses cannot be overstated. Restaurants, hotels, shops, taxi drivers, tour operators all benefit from the influx of visitors,” Heaven continued.

He insisted that the festival creates jobs, stimulates the local economy and fosters a sense of pride in our community.

He also lauded the festival for the family atmosphere that has been a major pull for patrons over the years.

“This is an invaluable contributor to family outings. In an age where digital distractions are rampant, this festival offers the space where families can come together, share a meal and create lasting memories,” Heaven said.

In regards to entertainment, Montego Bay Jerk Fest is set to be headlined by a number of young acts including Rajah Wild, Kraft, JQuan, Kaka High Flames among others.
