Published on May 15, 2022

uber pwa web app

Public transit is on the rise almost everywhere in the world. In the US alone, public transit is up 34% since 1995. Companies like Uber have revolutionized the space with more flexible (and dare we say, hip and cool) public transit options. Additionally, other companies like Citymapper have made existing transit easier to use. You can find transit apps all over the place that help you find a variety of transportation. Here are the best transit apps for Android. Every app on this list is free to use, but rides do cost money for all of them.

The best transit apps for Android

  • Local transit apps

Cabify (two apps)

Price: Free

Easy Taxi by Cabify screenshot 2020

Cabify is a taxi app that has it more together. It has one of the larger footprints of any of the transit apps. The app currently covers over 400 cities in South, Central, and North America (up through Mexico). It works rather easily. The app finds your GPS location. You can then hail a ride to that location. People have the option to store their credit card info for even more features. There are also some cities in the Middle East region that the app covers. It does have a few issues. However, most of them are minor. There is an official Cabify app here and then there’s Easy Taxi, an app by Cabify, at the button below.

Citymapper screenshot 2022

Citymapper is a good entry point for transit apps. It has support for most things. That includes taxis, subways, trains, ferries, cabs, and even Uber and Lyft. You can also get departure times, alerts, step-by-step directions, and offline maps in some areas. It covers about a dozen cities in the US, a few in Canada, over a dozen in Europe, and a few in Asia and Australia. People interested can vote to have their areas eventually covered. It’s not perfect for everybody. However, it’s a good start.

Curb screenshot 2021

Curb is one of the up-and-coming transit apps. It’s a taxi app that connects you to 50,000+ taxis in 65 US cities. That includes the big ones like New York, Chicago, Washington DC, and Los Angeles. You can request an immediate ride if needed. Alternatively, you can book a cab for later. You can even use the app to pay for rides you find on your own. It’s new and it’s going through its fair share of issues. It’s something to keep an eye on in the coming months and years as it grows.

EasyWay screenshot 2021

EasyWay is a public transit app that services Eastern Europe. That includes over 50 cities in Ukraine, over 50 cities in Russia, and a few places in Croatia, Bulgaria, Serbia, and Moldova. It’s simple to use. You just open it, find your location, and then order a ride. You can search for optimal routes, bookmark various information, and there is even an offline mode. It covers a large part of that area of the world. Some people have had issues. However, the experience should be mostly positive.

Lyft screenshot 2021

Lyft is one of the most popular transit apps out there. It competes directly with Uber’s service. The service is only available in the US right now. However, it covers a really large portion of the US. Additionally, they announced in early 2017 that a global expansion was imminent. The service works well. You can split checks between multiple riders, pay through the app, and more. It’s a really good alternative to Uber if you don’t like them for whatever reason. They’ll be even better when they go global.

Moovit screenshot 2020

Moovit is another one of the most popular transit apps out there. It supports over 2,000 cities with more on the way. That makes it one of the biggest in this space. It doesn’t provide rides on its own. However, you can use it to find train schedules, bus schedules, subway schedules, trams, and more. You can then use that info to get to your destination. It even has unique stuff like bike-sharing for those days when you want to ride. Most people have good experiences with this one. We recommend you try this one out first.

OneBusAway is one of the newer transit apps. It currently supports a few cities in the US. That includes New York, San Diego, Rogue Valley for some reason, Tampa Bay, and Washington DC. The app helps you find bus stops in your area. It also sources arrival times with the local transportation agency. The app is simple to use. It shouldn’t take long to get it open and find the next bus arrival time. The developers plan on expanding more later. It’ll be pretty good when it does.

Transit is growing quickly. It also has a decent-sized footprint. It supports over 125 cities across the US, Canada, Australia, and Europe. It’ll tell you schedules for buses, subways, and similar modes of transportation. It also has alerts, step-by-step navigation, bike-sharing stations, and integration with Uber. It also syncs up with local transportation agencies in most of the cities it supports. The design is simply fantastic as well. Most of the user complaints are about the occasionally wrong arrival times of the occasional bus or train.

Uber screenshot 2020

Uber is essentially the Google of transit apps. It wasn’t the first, but it definitely covers the most bases. The service covers more than 500 cities worldwide and expanding frequently. It features the usual stuff. It’ll ping your location and you can hail an Uber through the app. You can also pay through the app, rate your drivers, and more. It’s definitely the most iconic transportation app out there. We’ve all heard those Uber driver stories on Facebook. Thankfully, they’re pretty rare in real life. The service usually works as expected.

Most of this list is focused on worldwide services or the US. Most of our readers are in the US but we try to be helpful for everybody. There are tons of transit apps for many countries and larger cities around the world. The linked app is CittaMobi, a transit app that covers São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Large cities like New York have apps dedicated just to its transportation. It’s worth looking around Google Play to see if there are transportation apps available for your city or country. Chances are there are at least one.

11 Useful Travel Apps That Work Just Fine Offline

No Internet? No Problem.

Having access to cell data while traveling overseas is often complicated, slow, limited, and expensive . Even in the United States, fast, reliable coverage everywhere is far from certain once you get outside major metro areas.

Fortunately, there are many travel apps that don’t need a real-time data connection at all. Instead, they can be synced via WiFi in advance then used in offline mode while on the move, saving money and frustration during your travels.

Here are 11 of the most useful examples, and there are many others depending on your needs. All are available on at least iOS and Android.

Google Maps

Courtesy of Google Maps

Google Maps has a checkered history when it comes to its offline abilities, but 2018 and 2019 versions brought back support for unlimited saved areas and added offline turn-by-turn navigation.

It's easy to pick towns, cities, or regions, sync them to your phone, then get driving directions even in flight mode. However, you won't get cycling, public transport, or walking directions without a connection, unfortunately, but can still see where you are on the map in real-time.

Courtesy of Here WeGo

Originally developed by Nokia, Here WeGo is likely the best offline navigation app out there. Unlike Google Maps, it can give directions for walking, cycling, and public transit even while offline, and downloading map data for entire regions or countries is very straightforward.

Directions are generally accurate. However, when you're offline, it helps to have the exact address of the place you're going, not just a name. Also, pay attention to the storage requirements for this app since you'll need plenty of space on your phone if you want to download maps for several countries.

Courtesy of Tripit

Tripit has been around for years and is still the best way to manage your itinerary with or without a data connection. It can monitor your email for travel bookings and updates—or you can manually forward confirmations if you’d prefer—and the app will continue to sync the latest updates whenever it has an Internet connection.

Hotels, flights, car rentals, and more are all stored in one place, and the service automatically builds a detailed itinerary for you. The basic Tripit app is free, but there is also a Pro version available that has a few extra features.

XE Currency

Courtesy of XE Currency

XE Currency is a long-time favorite for making currency conversions quickly and easily. Before you head out, add the currencies you'll likely use to the app's database; then you use the free app offline anywhere you want.

It’ll instantly convert from a selected currency to all the others you've saved, taking a few seconds at most. This makes it ideal when out shopping, or standing at the  bureau de change  to ensure you’re being offered a reasonable exchange rate.

However, it's important to keep in mind that the XE Currency app only updates when connected to the internet, and currency rates may change while you're traveling. Be sure to update the app when you get a chance to get online to avoid confusion.

Courtesy of Triposo

If you're looking for a travel guide, check out Triposo. It bundles information from Wikipedia, Wikitravel, and elsewhere all together into an easy-to-use offline guide.

Download the data pack for your destination(s) before leaving home, since they can be pretty large, and you’ll have activities, hotels, and restaurants, maps, and basic directions all at your fingertips.

Additionally, the app includes background information about destinations around the world, phrasebooks, currency conversion, and more for free, all of which can be used while offline.

Courtesy of Pocket

Whenever you're planning a trip, you'll inevitably end up saving a lot of information about your intended destination—restaurant recommendations, places to go, navigation information, and more. To ensure you can access it all offline, install the Pocket browser extension and app.

One click or tap saves your current web page, and the app then automatically syncs everything whenever it has a WiFi connection. All that saved information stays available on your phone, wherever and whenever you need it.

The Pocket app is also a great tool for storing entertainment from Youtube, news articles from Vox and the New York Times, and even funny gifs from Twitter and Reddit.

Google Translate

Courtesy of Google Translate

When it comes to translation, Google Translate is the stand-out performer. Both the iOS and Android versions let you download over 50 different language packs, allowing for quick translation of words and phrases when on the move.

While offline, you can either type in the words you'd like to translate, or just point your phone camera at a menu, sign, or other printed material. If you're traveling somewhere you don't speak the language, it's an absolute lifesaver in many situations—especially when you feel lost.

Courtesy of  WifiMap

There’s even an offline app to help you get online. The paid version of Wifi Map lets you download its database of WiFi locations for entire cities ahead of time so that you can fire up the app when you’re away from home and find the nearest WiFi hotspot.

Information, including location and password, is entered by the app's users, and there are over one hundred million networks currently listed around the world.

As mentioned, the version with offline support isn't free—but at five dollars, it's a small price to pay to have Internet access when you need it.

American Red Cross First Aid

Courtesy of American Red Cross First Aid

The American Red Cross has developed a small range of health-based apps, and the most useful for travelers are based around first aid.

Covering things like anaphylaxis, burns, bleeding, and much more, the American Red Cross First Aid app helps teach appropriate techniques in advance via video training and provides step-by-step guidance on what to do in an emergency. There's also a quiz section, to make sure you've retained what you learned.

TripAdvisor

Courtesy of TripAdvisor

It's pretty hard to avoid TripAdvisor when planning a vacation—it is the leading website for restaurant, accommodation, and attraction reviews. You'll usually come across it from a Google search, but if you want offline access, it's worth downloading the company's app as well.

It works much the same as the website, but also lets you download reviews, maps, and your saved locations for over 300 popular cities around the world.

Courtesy of Spotify

Streaming music services are now the main way most of us listen to our favorite tunes, but they've got a couple of disadvantages for travelers: they don't work offline, and use quite a bit of data if you listen for hours.

Spotify gets around that problem by letting you download songs, podcasts, albums, and playlists to your device. Once that's done, the songs will play normally even when you don't have a connection—just switch into Offline mode, and you'll only see the tracks you've saved.

Note that you'll need a paid subscription to Spotify to enable the offline feature.

Transit apps make it easier to shuffle between locations, especially when you're new to an area or don't own a vehicle. You'll know when to catch the next bus or train and see real-time changes to the schedule. This way, you can make informed decisions before leaving your house and cut down the waiting time. Also, the apps provide navigational assistance to the station, so you don't need to ask people for directions.

Some apps support integration with car-hailing services, allowing you to book a ride from your mobile phone . This option is ideal if you dread sitting close to strangers or dislike making many stops. If you want to commute better with transit apps, learn how they work and choose the best ones for you.

What are public transit apps, and how do they work?

Public transit apps are mobile applications with features to help you navigate public transportation systems. Typically, they have a map for viewing different locations and buttons for planning a ride. You can input your current location and destination. Then, the app shows you available buses, trains, ferries, and other vehicles nearby to take you there.

You can also compare schedules and pick one that's convenient for you. Paying for tickets may be possible in some cases. Otherwise, you can view the agency's contact info and reach them for bookings. Some apps allow you to order rides with Uber, Bolt, and other popular car-hailing services. Use them if public rides aren't your style or you're running late and want to avoid multiple stops.

When you hail a cab online, your transit app redirects you to the appropriate app. Download them from the Apple or Google Play stores if you haven't installed them. Another feature transit apps provide is stop alerts. It uses Global Positioning System (GPS) and real-time tracking data to monitor the vehicle's movements. You'll receive a notification to get off at the correct time when it's approaching your destination. You can also save your favorite routes for quick access. Here are the top five transit apps the internet has to offer.

Transit app features vary depending on the developers and your region. Before installing any, research them to ensure that they meet your needs.

Moovit provides three menus for choosing a destination and monitoring transit lines. Start a trip, and the app gives you directions throughout. You'll see walking instructions to the boarding station and a real-time view of your journey. Save your favorite lines, and the app gives you updates that the agency makes to routes or schedules.

When you subscribe to the premium plan, you get alerts for every stop. This way, you never miss your chance to get off. Although the free plan is enough for making basic commuting plans, it contains ads. Moovit offers a seven-day free trial to remove them and try premium app features.

OS compatibility: Android, iOS, web.

Availability: Over 100 countries.

Price: Free, Moovit+ ($1.15 monthly, $6.29 yearly).

2 Google Maps

Google Maps is more of a personal vehicle navigation app. It also provides extensive information on bus, train, and ferry services in over 200 cities worldwide. When you enter your location and destination into the app, Maps shows you the estimated arrival time for different transport modes. You can switch between them using the car, bike, or walking icons. The public transportation icon is a bus.

Maps shows you the nearest stations to board a transit and the fastest way to reach it. You'll also see departure and arrival times, and choose one that's convenient for you. Though you can't buy tickets on the app, you can check the station's contact information and reach them. When your ride begins, you'll see your movements live. That includes every stop, detour, and incident that interrupts your journey. Pin the route if it's one that you plan to use frequently, or add it to Google Calendar to receive reminders.

Availability: Over 220 countries.

Price: Free.

Transit works similarly to the above apps but hides the distracting menus. Everything you need to plan a trip appears on one screen. You can set your home or work addresses and reuse them in a single tap. The settings menu holds options to customize your experience. For example, suggest routes with less walking and crowds or more wheelchair accessibility.

When you create a transit account, you can pay for bus tickets within the app. However, this feature works in select locations, and you must be online to use it. Also, tickets are non-transferable to other apps or individuals.

OS compatibility: Android, iOS.

Availability: Over 300 cities and 18 countries.

4 CityMapper

Your first interaction with CityMapper shows you different transportation in grids. You can find departures for all types or narrow your search for buses, cabs, streetcars, or micromobility options. One interesting feature is stats tracking. The app shows the calories you've burnt, carbon emission reductions, and cost savings. These metrics aren't always accurate. Still, you'll get an estimation of your progress toward saving the planet.

The app adopts a playful interface to make you comfortable. The search bar displays a "Get me somewhere" text and icon choices carry funny titles, such as "Really really dark green" and "Dude." You decide the color or icon CityMapper uses on your Home and Apps screens. You can also change your location's dot to an emoji and watch it move across the app with you in real time.

Availability: Europe, USA, Canada, Asia & ROW.

Price: Free, Club ($1 monthly, $5 yearly).

5 OneBusAway

OneBusAway is relatively new and focuses on bus transit. You can plan a trip, set stop reminders, and make payments. You can also save your favorite stops and routes locally from the settings menu. This data is useful if the app crashes or you install it on a new device. You can recover the lost data shortly afterward.

Every bus stop appears on the map in green-colored icons. However, OneBusAway is only available in a few cities within the United States and Canada. You may not see the icons on your end. The good news is that it's open source. As a developer, you may find the source code in the GitHub repository and customize it to meet your needs.

Availability: USA, Canada.

The right app makes public transit stress-free

The apps above provide the necessary features you need in a transit solution. However, some of them are limited to the US and select countries. You may find better apps tailored specifically for your location in your device's app store. If you need a versatile app, use Google Maps. It's available in most countries and doubles as a personal transportation guide. Set your commute to and from your frequented places, and watch Maps breeze you through the best routes.

You're on your way to work. As you walk up the stairs to the train platform, the doors close and it begins the slow roll to its destination without you. You were only a couple minutes too late, and now you're stuck waiting for the next train.

Luckily, technology has provided us with several genius ways to monitor trains, buses, and subways. With these public transit tracker apps, you won't miss your connection again.

1. Citymapper

You can count on Citymapper to provide you with real-time data for all the public transit options in your area. If you're curious about train and bus times, hit the Rail or Bus buttons on the main menu. Citymapper will open up a map that displays any train stations, bus stops, and subway stations within walking distance.

Select Get Me Somewhere on the main menu, and input the location that you're headed to. Citymapper will pull up all your transit options and your estimated time of arrival, as well as the cost of travel.

Citymapper doesn't stop at just trains, buses, and subways---it also shows you available rideshares, Ubers, Lyfts, bike paths, and even ferries.

Transit's simple interface makes it easy to get from one destination to the next. As soon as you open the app, it shows you a map of your area, along with the closest available public transit options and departure times. Unlike Citymapper, Transit supports Amtrak as well.

You can even keep track of your bus and train's real-time location---watch your train or bus approach your stop, and never worry about getting there too late. Plus, you can turn on push notifications to alert you of any service changes.

If you're not familiar with your surroundings, use the Go option to enable step-by-step directions. This way, you'll know exactly which bus stop or train station will allow you to reach your destination in a timely manner.

Don't see a transit option that works for you? Conveniently use the app to call a nearby Lyft, Uber, or Via ride, or locate the nearest bike-share to use as your backup plan.

Moovit supports over 2,700 metro areas. When you're ready to depart, add your destination and use Moovit's live directions to get to your transit option on time.

Use a combination of buses, trains, bikes, subways, ferries, or even an Uber to get to your location in the most efficient way possible. This convenient transit tracker supports several of the most widely-used transit agencies such as MTA, NJ Transit, BART, LA Metro, Caltrain, and much more.

Moovit has a unique interface that allows you to view the nearby transit stations and lines in a clear-cut manner. Hit the Lines option on the bottom of your screen, and you'll scroll through the city's different train and bus routes. When you tap on a specific line, the app puts its schedule right at your fingertips. You also have the option of moving your cursor around the map to locate any nearby stations.

5. OneBusAway

OneBusAway is an open source app that allows you save your favorite bus stops, locate nearby stops, and receive reminders for your most-traveled routes. As the name of the app implies, it focuses solely on buses.

Unfortunately, OneBusAway doesn't have as far of a reach as some of these other apps, but it still provides accurate travel information for bus riders in large cities. Currently, OneBusAway is only available in Oregon, California, Washington, Florida, Washington D.C., and in the York Region of Canada.

Open up OneBusAway, and take a look at your city's map---each green dot represents a bus stop. Tap on one of the stops, and you'll get detailed information on the bus' path.

6. Transportr

When it comes to public transportation, the locals usually have the best information. That's where Transportr comes in---this open source Android app has been edited and created by people from all over the world using data from local transit agencies. If you're feeling ambitious, you can even add your own city to the app.

Ready to hit the road? Type in your destination and Transportr will show you the best routes via subway, train, or bus, along with departure times and any delays. You can also take a look at the map to see the closest stations.

Transportr doesn't use Google Analytics' tracking tools, so you don't have to be concerned about any intrusions of your privacy.

7. Google Maps

Sometimes you just have to go back to the basics. If you're already familiar with Google Maps, you know how simple the app is to use. Type in your destination, and Google Maps will find the best travel path for you.

Either way, you won't have to scramble to get to your stop only to find that you already missed the bus. Most of these apps let you in on any delays or early arrivals that can impact your travel plans.

Apps that make traveling easier: top picks for stress-free trips.

transit travel app

Traveling can be an exciting experience, but it can also be a stressful one. From packing to navigating a new city, there are many challenges that come with traveling. Fortunately, there are now apps available that can make the process easier and more enjoyable.

Essential Travel Apps for Planning and Organization

When it comes to planning and organizing a trip, having the right apps can make all the difference. Here are some essential travel apps that can help make your next trip smoother and more enjoyable.

Itinerary Management

Keeping track of all your travel plans can be a hassle, but with apps like TripIt, it’s a breeze. TripIt allows you to forward all your travel confirmation emails to a single email address, and it automatically creates a master itinerary for you. You can access your itinerary anytime, anywhere, even offline. It also provides real-time flight alerts and gate changes, so you can stay up-to-date with any changes to your travel plans.

Accommodation Booking

Finding the right accommodations can be a challenge, but with apps like Airbnb, Booking.com, and Expedia, it’s easier than ever. Airbnb lets you book unique accommodations around the world, from apartments and villas to treehouses and yurts. Booking.com offers a wide range of accommodations, from budget-friendly hostels to luxury hotels. Expedia allows you to book flights, hotels, and rental cars all in one place.

Transportation Coordination

Getting around in a new place can be daunting, but with apps like Skyscanner, Rome2rio, Uber, and Lyft, it’s a breeze. Skyscanner helps you find the cheapest flights, hotels, and rental cars. Rome2rio provides you with all the transportation options available, from buses and trains to flights and ferries. Uber and Lyft allow you to easily hail a ride and get around town.

Overall, these essential travel apps can help make your trip planning and organization a breeze.

Navigating Your Destinations

Language and communication.

When traveling to a new country, it’s important to be able to communicate effectively with locals. One helpful app for language translation is Google Translate, which allows users to translate text and speech in over 100 languages. Another option is WhatsApp, which can be used for messaging and calling with locals who speak a different language.

Maps and Directions

Getting lost in an unfamiliar place can be frustrating, but there are several apps that can help with navigation. Google Maps is a popular choice for its accurate directions and real-time traffic updates. Maps.me is another option for offline maps that can be downloaded before traveling to a destination. Additionally, navigation apps such as Moovit can provide information on public transit options.

Local Transportation

Understanding local transportation options can make getting around a new city much easier. Apps such as Moovit and Google Maps can provide information on public transit schedules and routes. It’s also helpful to research local taxi services or ride-sharing apps such as Uber or Lyft.

One of the questions you might have about transport is do you need a passport to go to Hawaii ? The short answer is yes or a valid ID if you’re from the USA.

Managing Finances on the Go

Expense tracking.

Keeping track of expenses while traveling can be a hassle, but with the right app, it can be a breeze. Splitwise is a popular app that allows users to split expenses with friends and keep track of who owes what. It also allows users to track expenses individually and set reminders for when bills are due. Trail Wallet is another app that allows users to track expenses and set budgets for their trip. It also has a feature that converts expenses into the user’s home currency.

Currency Conversion

XE Currency and XE Currency Converter are two apps that provide up-to-date exchange rates for over 180 currencies. XE Currency Converter also allows users to calculate the cost of a product or service in their home currency. Both apps are useful for travelers who need to convert currencies on the go.

When it comes to managing finances while traveling, it’s important to keep in mind the tipping customs of the country being visited. For example for tipping in Greece , it is customary to leave a small tip of 5-10% at restaurants and cafes. It’s always a good idea to research tipping customs before traveling to a new country to avoid any cultural misunderstandings.

Enhancing the Travel Experience

Adventure and activities.

Traveling can be both exciting and daunting, especially when it comes to finding new and thrilling activities to do. Fortunately, there are many apps available to help enhance your travel experience. Alltrails is a great app for those looking to explore hiking trails in new destinations. With detailed information on trails, difficulty levels, and reviews from other hikers, Alltrails can help you find the perfect trail for your next adventure.

Dining and Dietary Needs

For those with dietary restrictions, finding suitable dining options while traveling can be a challenge. HappyCow is an app that helps travelers find vegan, vegetarian, and other special diet-friendly restaurants in their area. With detailed reviews and ratings from other users, HappyCow can help ensure that travelers with dietary restrictions have a satisfying dining experience.

Staying Connected

Staying connected while traveling is essential for many reasons, whether it’s to keep in touch with loved ones or to stay productive as a digital nomad. Priority Pass is an app that allows travelers to access airport lounges around the world, providing a comfortable and quiet space to work or relax before a flight. Additionally, apps like Been and Tripadvisor can help travelers find reliable Wi-Fi hotspots in their area, ensuring that they can stay connected even when on-the-go.

These apps can help make the travel experience more enjoyable and stress-free, whether you’re traveling solo or with a group. By using these apps, travelers can easily find new and exciting activities, suitable dining options, and ways to stay connected while on the road.

NJ Transit, Amtrak service suspended again at Penn Station

Rail service was disrupted for a second day on Friday, with Amtrak trains into and out of New York City delayed or canceled and service on the commuter line NJ Transit suspended during the morning rush.

Several Amtrak trains scheduled to run between New York City and upstate New York were canceled,  the railroad said on X , and trains from Pennsylvania to New York were terminating in Philadelphia.

What You Need To Know

Rail service was disrupted for a second day on friday, with amtrak trains into and out of new york city delayed or canceled and service on the commuter line nj transit suspended during the morning rush widespread train delays and sweltering heat made for a nightmarish commute thursday evening amtrak warned commuters thursday afternoon that high temperatures may require trains to operate at lower speeds.

As of 4:30 p.m., there are still 30-minute delays due to "Amtrak overhead wire issues," according to the NJ Transit website.

Midtown direct trains were being diverted to Hoboken, New Jersey. Raritan Valley Line service will originate from Newark Penn Station. NJ Transit rail tickets and passes are being cross honored by NJ Transit, private carrier buses and the PATH at Newark Penn Station, Hoboken and 33rd Street in New York.

It comes after Amtrak delayed or canceled trains in and out of the city.

NJ Transit, meanwhile, appeared to blame Amtrak for the fact that its own service in and out of Penn Station was suspended during Friday's morning rush hour.

“Rail service is suspended into and out of Penn Station New York due to AMTRAK overhead wire issues in Penn Station New York,” the commuter line, which shares tracks with Amtrak, said on its website.

Service resumed around 11 a.m. with 45-minute delays, NJ Transit said.

Widespread train delays and sweltering heat made for a nightmarish commute Thursday evening.

"I'm disgusted because it's always something different,” said Denise Wooten, who commutes from Montclair, New Jersey, to Penn Station for work. “Delays. This has been going on for too long now. Every time you turn around. I just want to get home.”

NJ Transit and Amtrak users arrived at Penn Station Thursday only to learn that power outages were causing delays from New Haven all the way to Philadelphia.

An Amtrak spokesperson said two things were to blame for the service disruptions: brush fires in Secaucus, New Jersey and a malfunctioning circuit breaker which caused a loss in power on the tracks between New York, and Newark Penn stations.

"I take the train every day, but over the last couple of weeks, NJ Transit has really sucked. I mean we have had very poor services,” said Thurston Green, who takes Amtrak five days a week.

To make matters more unconformable, temperatures climbed well into the 90s Thursday, marking the hottest day of the year so far. And below ground, there wasn’t much relief.

"Look at me. I'm sweating, it's hot. It's too much,” said Wooten.

Amtrak warned commuters Thursday afternoon that high temperatures may require trains to operate at lower speeds, resulting in delays of up to 60 minutes between noon and 7:30 p.m. for the remainder of the week.

Power was restored at 5:30 p.m., but Amtrak warned riders to expect congestion along the rails.

Commuters said they’d like to see more accountability from transit leaders both in New York and New Jersey.

“They have to fix the trains. We keep spending all this money, $5 a fare. There are 365 days in a year, how much money are you spending here? Where's that money going to?” said Shawn Mendez, who was traveling to an event in Newark.

A heat advisory has been issued for the city beginning noon Friday with feels-like temperatures expected to reach 97 degrees.

RPT announces new app for bus tracking, trip planning

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) – Friday, Rochester Public Transit (RPT) announced its partnership with Transit, a phone app designed to accurately track routes and timing of city buses. The new Transit app replaces DoubleMap, which was RPT’s real-time bus tracking app since 2015.

An RPT spokesperson says Transit is free to download from the App Store for IOS and Google Play for Android devices . The app comes with several features: users can save their favorite locations and frequently used routes. The app comes with push alerts and real-time detour detection.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation partnered with Transit to offer an upgraded app experience called Royale at no cost to Minnesotans.

“Accurate real-time bus location information is an important tool for our customers” shared RPT Project Manager Mike Collins. “Transit will do that and much more. Customers are going to see a big improvement with the new mobile app.”

The Transit app is powered by a larger bus technology overhaul project which will also improve RPT’s customer experience as well as data collection and reporting. RPT customers will still be able to purchase and redeem fare products using the RPT Mobile Fare app.

DoubleMap will no longer be functional after June 19.

Dali, the cargo ship that triggered Baltimore bridge collapse, set for journey to Virginia

transit travel app

The ship that crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge and triggered its collapse is preparing to travel from the Port of Baltimore, where it has remained for since the bridge collapsed on March 26 , to the Port of Virginia.

The United States Coast Guard said in a news release Monday it will oversee the "safe and secure voyage" of the motor vessel Dali .

During the transit, the Coast Guard Cutter Sailfish, an 87-foot Marine Protector-class patrol board homeported in Virginia Beach, will provide a 500-yard safety zone around the Dali while Coast Guard watchstanders at command centers in the Fifth Coast Guard District, in Portsmouth, Virginia, monitor the ship's movement, the Coast Guard said.

The Dali is scheduled to sail under its own power with a full crew of 22 and six salvage experts from Resolve Marine, according to the news release. Four commercial tugboats will accompany the ship and the salvage vessel Interceptor from Resolve Marine will follow closely behind.

According to the Coast Guard, the Dali is scheduled to go directly to Virginia International Gateway to have roughly 1,500 cargo containers offloaded to reduce draft. It will then transit further to Norfolk International Terminal where it is slated to undergo "continued salvage and repairs from damage caused during the bridge collapse."

Channel reopened: Baltimore channel fully reopened for transit over 2 months after Key Bridge collapse

Visual analysis: How Francis Scott Key Bridge was lost: A minute-by-minute visual analysis of the collapse

Baltimore channel fully reopened for transit

The Fort McHenry Federal Channel was restored to its original operational depth earlier this month, nearly three months after the  Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse .

The channel was restored to its original dimensions  of 700 feet wide and 50 feet deep after 50,000 tons of bridge wreckage was removed from the Patapsco River, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) announced on June 10.

“We are proud of the unified efforts that fully reopened the Federal Channel to port operations,” Lt. Gen. Scott Spellmon, commanding general of USACE, said in a statement. “The partnerships that endured through this response made this pivotal mission successful.”

The Key Bridge Response 2024 Unified Command has worked to remove the destroyed Baltimore bridge since the collapse occurred on March 26, when it was hit by the Dali, killing six construction workers.

“Although the overarching goal to restore full operational capacity to the Federal Channel was successful, each day, we thought of those who lost their lives, their families, and the workers impacted by this tragic event,” Col. Estee Pinchasin, Baltimore District commander, said. “Not a day went by that we didn’t think about all of them, and that kept us going.”
