Tourism in the 2030 Agenda

The year 2015 has been a milestone for global development as governments have adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, along with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The bold agenda sets out a global framework to end extreme poverty, fight inequality and injustice, and fix climate change until 2030. Building on the historic Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the ambitious set of 17 Sustainable Development Goals and 169 associated targets is people-centred, transformative, universal and integrated.

Harnessing tourism's benefits will be critical to achieving the sustainable development goals and implementing the post-2015 development agenda

Tourism has the potential to contribute, directly or indirectly, to all of the goals. In particular, it has been included as targets in Goals 8, 12 and 14 on inclusive and sustainable economic growth, sustainable consumption and production (SCP) and the sustainable use of oceans and marine resources, respectively.

Sustainable tourism is firmly positioned in the 2030 Agenda. Achieving this agenda, however, requires a clear implementation framework, adequate financing and investment in technology, infrastructure and human resources.

Stay up to date:, travel and tourism.

The travel and tourism industry has grown dramatically in the past decades, reaching nearly 1.2 billion international arrivals in 2015, compared to 25 million in 1950. That’s a growth of 4,700% – and this number is only expected to get bigger, reaching 1.8 billion international arrivals by 2030. You might be surprised, but it’s one of the fastest growing economic sectors in the world.

While historically, travel was a luxury only offered to those wealthy enough to afford it, the lowering of travel barriers and falling real travel costs have led to the flourishing of the travel and tourism industry. These factors, combined with the growth of disposal income, the growth of the middle class in many growth markets, and changing attitudes of people towards travel, have enabled the surge of international travel.

But as we look ahead, who will be travelling in 2030?

It is clear that the big winners will be Africa (157% increase), the Middle East (125% increase) and Asia-Pacific (87%). While Europe and the Americas are expected to continue growing, their rate is incomparable to the other regions.

Not only will emerging destinations become larger source markets, but they will also become more attractive destinations.

Looking at it from a different angle, which countries will be the fastest growing destinations for leisure travel spending between 2016 and 2026?

While you may not have been to any of these destinations yet, you might want to start exploring some of them.

Still, a person’s country of origin is not the only way to describe them. Amadeus undertook a great study , categorizing people into six traveller tribes on the basis of their motivations for travel rather than on geography.

What do these “travel personalities” mean?

  • Simplicity searchers prioritize ease as they plan and experience their travels. They are happy to have a trusted third party make decisions to avoid hassle.
  • Cultural purists are travellers who want to disconnect from their day-to-day lives, and immerse themselves completely in the local culture.
  • Social capital seekers are digitally connected individuals who will make decisions to maximize social reward. They realize the value of travel to those around them. They want to be seen and will share their experiences on social media.
  • Reward hunters will use travel to “treat” themselves to what they don’t have in their day-to-day lives. They might focus on a mix of luxury, self-improvement and health.
  • Obligation meeters make their travel decision based on a duty. They may have to go to a wedding, on a family trip, a religious holiday or a business trip, for instance.
  • Ethical travellers will allow their beliefs and conscience guide their travel decisions. This could be linked to environmental, political or even social issues.

Reading these descriptions, you probably realize that these groups are not mutually exclusive – and that there are many other ways of “dissecting” the future traveller. For instance, are you a baby boomer or a millennial?

We are all interesting combinations of this traveller of the future. Today, I am a European, millennial reward hunter.

Which combination are you?

New Report From WTTC and Jll Outlines Global Cities’ Preparedness for Sustainable Travel & Tourism Growth

travel & tourism expert towards 2030 usato

WTTC and JLL release latest ‘Destination 2030: Global cities’ readiness for sustainable tourism growth’

London, UK/ Chicago, U.S.: The World Travel & Tourism Council ( WTTC ) and JLL released today a new major report which addresses what makes a city better prepared for Travel & Tourism growth.

The report, ‘Destination 2030: Global cities’ readiness for sustainable tourism growth’, has been released during WTTC’s 21 st Global Summit in Manila, Philippines.

Prior to the pandemic, the Travel & Tourism sector had been outpacing the global economy for almost a decade, with an annual average growth of 4.3% compared to 2.9% through 2019, and a contribution of nearly USD 9.2 trillion to the global economy in the same year.

After the damaging disruption caused by the pandemic, the global Travel & Tourism sector is finally seeing signs of recovery. As the sector continues to evolve, the halt to international travel not only provided new challenges, but also the opportunity for policy makers, destination leaders and stakeholders to enhance the sector’s readiness.

The report, also known as ‘Destination 2030’, addresses what makes a city ready for sustainable Travel & Tourism. 63 global cities were measured and categorised into one of five levels of “readiness” while providing attainable solutions to promote sustainable growth in tourism activity in each destination.

Julia Simpson, WTTC President & CEO, said: “Travel & Tourism plays an incredibly important role in a city’s economy, not only boosting GDP, but also creating jobs and improving the livelihoods of those who rely on our sector.

“We are delighted to continue our partnership with JLL building on our initial report launched in 2019 with a special focus on sustainability.

“For a city to truly thrive and for Travel & Tourism to develop in a sustainable manner, stakeholders need to understand how prepared the city is for the expected growth in tourism and the resulting challenges and opportunities that lay ahead.”

“The notion of ‘readiness’ has a ripple effect throughout the hospitality and tourism industry,” said Gilda Perez-Alvarado, Global CEO, JLL Hotels & Hospitality. “The progression and planning that a country, region or destination achieves will impact the financial health of the industries that make up the tourism industry. This includes property values, tax generation and workforce development.”

“The collective research that has produced the readiness index underscores the importance and breadth of engagement that is needed from the tourism industry,” added Dan Fenton, Director of Global Tourism and Destination Development Services, JLL Hotels & Hospitality. “Our industry must take a leadership role in virtually all indicators that make up the index.”

According to the innovative report, the “readiness” levels range on a scale from emerging to established-market tourism hubs with varying levels of infrastructure. It goes on explain the current opportunities and challenges faced by cities and offers recommendations for building and maintaining tourism activity.

Although the five typologies will require different approaches to development, no one typology is better than another, and all will demand proactiveness in strategic planning and implementation at the destination level:

  • Dawning Developers , such as New Delhi and Riyadh, are cities with emerging tourism infrastructure, slower tourism growth, and lower visitor concentration. Such destinations often have a clean slate in planning long term tourism development with many opportunities ahead.
  • Emerging Performers , such as Dubrovnik and Buenos Aires, are cities that are experiencing growing tourism momentum, enabled by emerging tourism infrastructure, and providing tremendous opportunities for strategic development. However, destinations in this category may experience pressures and challenges such as overcrowding.
  • Balanced Dynamics , such as Auckland and Vancouver, are cities that have established tourism infrastructure and potential for further Travel & Tourism growth, across both leisure and business segments, whilst balancing scale and concentration.
  • Mature Performers , such as Miami, Berlin, and Hong Kong, are cities with a strong leisure and/or business travel dynamics and an established tourism infrastructure. As these destinations look to further drive Travel & Tourism growth, they will need to proactively consider potential pressures as well as opportunities for diversification to avoid strains linked to visitor volumes.
  • Managing Momentum , such as Amsterdam, London, and Las Vegas, are cities with a historical high growth momentum, supported by an established tourism infrastructure. Destinations within this typology are more likely than ‘Mature Performers’ to have already reached the stage of feeling the pressures of balancing scale and concentration as they continue to benefit from Travel & Tourism.

The readiness categories were determined by analysing data on 79 indicators within eight pillars. In addition to the six pillars included in the previous report, – scale, concentration, leisure, business, urban readiness, and policy prioritisation –, two new pillars were added: environmental readiness, and safety and security.

These additions allowed for an improved focus on sustainability, social impact, and safety and security in conjunction with the more conventional indicators that continue to drive the sector.

The pandemic has shown the pressing need for a holistic view when addressing destination planning and management. The importance of cities as drivers of success cannot be undervalued, making it a priority to recommit to the future of destinations.

Trajectory was commissioned by the UN WTO to deliver a new report forecasting international travel and tourism volumes through to 2030. The project was overseen by UNTWO Executive Director for Competitiveness, External Relations and Partnerships, Mr. Marcio Favilla Lucca de Paula, and Coordinator of the UNWTO Tourism Trends and Marketing Strategies programme.

The report aimed to assist UNTWO Members in formulating policies and long-term strategic plans, provide a global reference on the future of tourism development, reinforce the UNWTO’s role in agenda setting and to constitute a reference for UNWTO strategic documents, programme of work and activities.

The final output incorporates regional dynamics enabling easy analysis of the likely impact of the ‘Rise of the Consumer Class’ for example. We are now firmly within the study period and the outputs are extensively referred to within UNWTO publications.

History of Moscow Oblast

The territory of the Moscow region was inhabited more than 20 thousand years ago. In the first millennium AD, this land was inhabited mostly by the Finno-Ugric peoples (Meryane and Meshchera). In the 9th-10th centuries, the Slavs began active development of the region. The population was engaged in hunting, fisheries, agriculture, and cattle breeding.

In the middle of the 12th century, the territory of the present Moscow region became part of the Vladimir-Suzdal principality, the first towns were founded (Volokolamsk in 1135, Moscow in 1147, Zvenigorod in 1152, Dmitrov in 1154). In the first half of the 13th century, the Vladimir-Suzdal principality was conquered by the Mongols.

In the 14th-16th centuries, Moscow principality became the center of unification of Russian lands. The history of the Moscow region is inextricably linked to military events of the Time of Troubles - the siege of the Trinity-Sergius Monastery by the troops of False Dmitry II, the first and second militias.

More historical facts…

In 1708, by decree of Peter the Great, Moskovskaya gubernia (province) was established. It included most of the territory of present Moscow oblast. In 1712, St. Petersburg became the capital of the Russian Empire and the significance of the Moscow region as the country’s economic center began to decrease.

In 1812, the Battle of Borodino took place near Moscow. It was the biggest battle of the Russian-French War of 1812. In the second half of the 19th century, especially after the peasant reform of 1861, the Moscow province experienced economic growth. In 1851, the first railway connected Moscow and St. Petersburg; in 1862 - Nizhny Novgorod.

The population of the Moscow region increased significantly (in 1847 - 1.13 million people, in 1905 - 2.65 million). On the eve of the First World War, Moscow was a city with a population of more than one million people.

In November, 1917, the Soviet power was established in the region. In 1918, the country’s capital was moved from St. Petersburg to Moscow that contributed to economic recovery of the province. In the 1920s-1930s, a lot of churches located near Moscow were closed, a large number of cultural monuments were destroyed. On January 14, 1929, Moscow Oblast was formed.

In 1941-1942, one of the most important battles of the Second World War took place on the territory of the region - the Battle for Moscow. In the postwar years, the growth of economic potential of the region continued; several science cities were founded (Dubna, Troitsk, Pushchino, Chernogolovka).

In the 1990s, the economy of Moscow Oblast experienced a deep crisis. Since the 1990s, due to the motorization of the population and commuting, road traffic situation in the Moscow region significantly deteriorated. Traffic jams have become commonplace.

Moscow Oblast - Features

Moscow Oblast is located in the central part of the East European Plain, in the basin of the rivers of Volga, Oka, Klyazma, Moskva. The region stretches from north to south for 310 km, from west to east - 340 km. It was named after the city of Moscow, which however is not part of the region. Part of the administrative authorities of the region is located in Krasnogorsk.

On the territory of the Moscow region, there are 77 cities and towns, 19 of them have a population of more than 100 thousand people. The largest cities are Balashikha (518,300), Podolsk (309,600), Mytishchi (262,700), Khimky (256,300), Korolyov (225,300), Lubertsy (209,600), Krasnogorsk (174,900), Elektrostal (149,000), Odintsovo (138,900), Kolomna (136,800), Domodedovo (136,100).

The climate is temperate continental. Summers are warm, winters are moderately cold. The average temperature in January is minus 10 degrees Celsius, in July - plus 19 degrees Celsius.

One of the most important features of the local economy is its proximity to Moscow. Some of the cities (Odintsovo, Krasnogorsk, Mytishchi) have become in fact the “sleeping districts” of Moscow. The region is in second place in terms of industrial production among the regions of Russia (after Moscow).

The leading industries are food processing, engineering, chemical, metallurgy, construction. Moscow oblast has one of the largest in Russia scientific and technological complexes. Handicrafts are well developed (Gzhel ceramics, Zhostov trays, Fedoskino lacquered miniatures, toy-making).

Moscow railway hub is the largest in Russia (11 radial directions, 2,700 km of railways, the density of railways is the highest in Russia). There are two large international airports - Sheremetyevo and Domodedovo. Vnukovo airport is used for the flights within the country.
