Canstar’s Best Value Travel Insurance NZ

Posted by Bruce Pitchers November 21, 2023

Holidays promise carefree relaxation away from work pressures and domestic chores. However, plenty of unforeseen events can ruin the best-laid vacation plans, from illness and accidents to the loss or theft of possessions.

If the worst does happen, a dream holiday can turn into a financial nightmare, especially if you’re left facing bills for medical treatments overseas or for life-saving repatriation. This is why ensuring you have adequate insurance cover before you jet off or sail away on your overseas adventure is a travel essential.

But trying to find the best insurance cover can be complicated. There’s no one-size-fits-all solution, as policy details and costs vary, depending on your age and choice of destination. And comparing different levels of cover and costs can be complicated.

But that’s where Canstar can help. As part of our mission to inform Kiwi consumers about the best financial products in the market, each year we analyse a wide range of travel insurance products and award the best providers our prestigious awards and Star Ratings for Outstanding Value Travel Insurance.

What are Canstar’s Travel Insurance Awards & Star Ratings?

Canstar’s Travel Insurance ratings score travel insurance providers and their products, and awards the best our prestigious 5-Star Ratings. Each insurance product is assessed and scored for its price and array of features.

For this year’s Travel Insurance Star Ratings, our expert research panel compared 44 travel insurance products from 18 providers across a range of different age profiles, including seniors. To be eligible for our ratings, each product had to meet certain basic requirements, including cover for:

  • $1 million overseas medical and hospital cover per international traveller
  • Repatriation and evacuation services
  • Luggage and personal effects
  • Cancellation fees and loss of deposit

For ease of comparison, the different insurance products are judged across six geographical regions and two cruise types:

  • Africa & Middle East
  • Tras-Tasman
  • Domestic Cruise
  • Pacific Cruise

Canstar’s Travel Insurance Awards

On the back of our Star Ratings research, we also award the best travel insurance providers and products our prestigious awards for Outstanding Value.

To be eligible for an Outstanding Value Award, insurance providers have to meet extra policy requirements. These include:

  • 24-hour emergency helpline
  • Period of cover automatically extends if a medical claim requires traveller to remain overseas for treatment
  • $5 million or more family overseas medical and hospital cover
  • $5 million or more family cover for repatriation and evacuation services
  • Included cover claims arising from cruising holidays in domestic and international waters (cruise only)
  • Availability to travellers aged over 70 (senior only)
  • Covers cancellation and medical claims arising from COVID-19 related events (domestic cruise only)

This is the second year in a row that AMP has earned an Outstanding Value | Seniors Travel Insurance Award . Our awards panel notes that AMP has achieved its back-to-back awards due to its consistently strong performance across all overseas regions, which is due to its competitive premiums for older travellers and above-average feature scores.

House of Travel once again earns three Outstanding Value Awards, in our International , South Pacific Cruise and  Trans-Tasman travel insurance profiles. The insurer’s performance continues to be driven by its competitive pricings, as well as its high levels of cover.

This year, Southern Cross wins two Outstanding Value Awards,  in our International   and  Seniors   profiles. Our research panel notes that Southern Cross Travel Insurance performs particularly well in senior profiles due to its competitive premiums for older travellers. However, premium increases across the brand’s cruise insurances did see them miss out on our South Pacific Cruise Award this year.

Tower Car Insurance

A newcomer to Canstar’s Travel Insurance Awards, Tower joins our Outstanding Value Awards recipients in the International , South Pacific Cruise and Trans-Tasman profiles this year due to its increased price performance and comprehensive policy offerings.

For the second consecutive year, Worldcare is the only travel insurance provider to earn an Outstanding Value Award across all award profiles.

This is due to Worldcare’s consistently competitive prices and strong range of policy features across all regions and age profiles.

In awarding Worldcare, our research panel noted the insurance brand’s exceptionally strong price performance and levels of cover in both the Trans-Tasman and South Pacific Cruise profiles.

Travel insurance FAQs

Travel insurance is a specific type of insurance that helps cover a number of costs and disruptions associated with travelling both domestically and overseas. Levels of cover differ per policy, however, travel insurance typically protects against trip cancellation, delays, lost luggage and personal belongings, medical expenses and repatriation, and personal liability.

Most travel insurance providers offer single or multi-trip policies, which can cover multiple countries within a specific timeframe. The destination, length of trip, specific activity add-ons and pre-existing medical conditions all help determine the cost of a travel insurance policy. Policies can be purchased at the time of booking a trip up until the time a traveller leaves their home.

Travel insurance varies for individual travellers based on the options selected by them, so prices vary from person-to-person. The cost of a travel insurance policy is determined by:

  • Age of traveller/s: the older the traveller, the higher the policy cost may be.
  • Number of travellers included in the policy: a higher number of travellers creates more variables, therefore increasing risk.
  • Length of trip/s: a single trip policy is generally around half the amount of a multi-trip policy, making the latter more cost-effective for frequent travellers, while shorter trips often pose less risk of medical incidents and travel interruptions, resulting in lower costs.
  • Destination/s: costs vary greatly depending on the countries and regions covered by a policy. For example, regions such as Europe will often be cheaper than trips to the USA because of the high cost of medical treatment in America.
  • Level of coverage: travellers can opt for cheaper travel insurance as well as comprehensive, more expensive plans to cater to their different needs.
  • Existing medical conditions: a customer’s policy will increase if their medical history shows an increased risk of possible medical treatment requirements while travelling.

While a cheaper policy cost upfront may seem appealing, always read the Policy Wording to ensure your needs are adequately covered should an incident occur.

Travel insurance protects you when travelling domestically or internationally by providing coverage against unforeseen circumstances that may negatively impact your travel plans.

By purchasing travel insurance prior to departure, your policy can help cover the costs of trip cancellations should you no longer be able to travel, as well as the costs of medical treatment, lost passports and personal items while you’re travelling. The customer usually pays for these costs upfront, before being reimbursed by the travel insurer upon claim approval.

To approve a claim, travel insurers require documentation such as a police report or medical bill to confirm the incident occurred.

Always read the Policy Wording before purchasing a travel insurance policy to ensure it provides adequate coverage for your circumstances.

Unfortunately, travel insurance can’t cover absolutely everything. This highlights the importance for travellers to read the Policy Wording before purchasing to avoid becoming frustrated when claims are unsuccessful. It will contain details on the situations you likely won’t be covered in, including:

  • Cancellation: simply changing your mind prior to your trip may not be sufficient for a successful claim.
  • Pre-existing conditions: if medical conditions aren’t disclosed or covered by the policy at time of purchase, exclusions may apply to coverage related to those conditions.
  • Theft or loss of belongings while left unattended: travellers must take care of their belongings as they would as home.
  • Incidents occurring as a result of reckless behaviour: claims arising from excessive drinking or taking recreational drugs will likely be rejected.
  • Winter and adventure sports: claims resulting from participation in high-risk sports will be void unless covered by the policy.
  • Terrorism and extreme weather events: travelling to specific regions against the advice of the government or your insurer may result in unsuccessful claims because the events are no longer unforeseeable circumstances.

For full details of exclusions within a travel insurance plan, consult the Policy Wording.

Purchasing a policy soon after a trip is booked has a number of benefits and increases a traveller’s protection.

When purchased ahead of time, a traveller can cancel their travel insurance policy for a full refund within the cooling-off period. If the policy is purchased before the customer leaves their home to depart for their trip, claims for rearrangements and cancellations caused by unforeseen circumstances can also be made.

By considering travel insurance as an essential part of booking a holiday - not an afterthought when at the airport - travellers are likely to be covered should an incident arise before take-off.

See all travel insurance FAQs .

*Medical cover will not exceed 12 months from onset. Medical and dental expenses cover is limited to $1,500 for treatment provided in New Zealand. This $1,500 sub-limit does not apply to the Inbound medical section. Emergency dental expenses are limited to $1,500. ~Cooling-off period is available if you wish to cancel your policy within 21 calendar days of the date of purchase and you have not made a claim under the policy or departed on your journey.

Please Note - If you are cruising around Australia you need to select Pacific. With Regions, variances can apply for Bali, Indonesia, Japan and Middle East. You are not required to enter stop-over countries if your stop-over is less than 48 hours.

If you don’t know where you’re traveling to within the next 12 months, choose Worldwide to ensure you’re covered no matter where you go. If you’re travelling to multiple countries choose the region that you are visiting that is furthest away (excluding stopovers less than 48 hours). In most cases you will be covered for the closer regions as well. For example, if you choose Europe, you will also be covered in the Middle East, Asia and Pacific.

Worldwide means anywhere in the world

Americas means USA, Canada, South America, Latin America, Hawaii and the Caribbean

Europe means all European countries, including UK

Middle East refers to the area from Syria to Yemen; Egypt to Iran

Asia generally means Asia and the Indian subcontinent. For some insurers this excludes Japan*

Pacific means the South West Pacific, Australia and Indonesia/Bali*. Select Pacific for domestic cruises in New Zealand waters

New Zealand means domestic travel within New Zealand only

*Note: Variances apply for Bali, Indonesia, Japan and Middle East. Check that your destination is covered once directed to your chosen insurer’s site.

LOOK BEYOND THE BARGAIN BASEMENT!

It's important to note that cost is far from the only factor that determines whether a travel insurance policy is the right one for you and your holiday. You should also look at policy features, limits and exclusions when choosing an insurer.  Not all policies will be discounted and some discounts are only offered for a short period, so don't miss out!  Travel insurance is essential for any trip, but if you’ve already blown your budget booking flights, accommodation and tours, Eugene (the King of Travel Insurance) has some super deals.

Cheap travel insurance

Choosing the right travel insurance for your holiday can be a frustrating challenge. Confusing policies, hidden costs and lengthy exclusions can mean you end up paying more than you need to. At Southern Cross Travel Insurance, we want to take the mystery out of finding the right cover for your holiday. We’re here to help you to protect yourself with a comprehensive and affordable policy for your next adventure.

How can I save money on my insurance?

Travel insurance can seem like an annoying extra expense, especially when you consider the cost of flights, accommodation and activities overseas. However, compared to the price of emergency medical care, lost luggage, delayed flights and damaged valuables, it’s easy to see why protecting yourself with comprehensive travel insurance is the smart financial choice. There are some simple ways you can save money on your travel insurance.

Don’t always choose the lowest price cover

You may be tempted to select dirt-cheap travel insurance, however before you commit to buy, it always pays to research the policy carefully.

Saving a few dollars on a budget policy may seem like a good option now, but when the unexpected happens overseas and you find you’re not covered, it can end up costing you lots in the long run.

Reading customer reviews  is a great place to start when researching the quality of a travel insurance provider.

Understand your travel insurance

There’s nothing more frustrating than having an insurance claim rejected because unexpectedly your claim doesn’t meet your policy’s rules. For example, you may not be covered if your electronics are damaged in checked luggage, or if your bags are stolen while left out of your sight.

A common mistake travellers make with travel insurance is failing to understand their cover. Always read your policy carefully so you can be confident that you stay insured, wherever your adventure takes you.

The majority of our policy documents have been written in ‘plain language’ to better help customers understand the cover that may be available to them. These documents have both been awarded the WriteMark, an independent endorsement awarded to documents that achieve a high standard of plain language.

How do I choose the right cheap policy?

There are several things to consider when choosing the best policy for your holiday, which will also impact the price of your insurance:

1. Your destination

If you're travelling overseas, your destination can affect the price of your international policy, because of the cost of medical care in the country and its risk rating. It's important that you let your insurer know all the destinations that you're planning to visit on your trip. Insurers may not be able to provide cover for some destinations if there are certain travel warnings on SafeTravel – it pays to check before you plan your trip.

2. The length of your journey

The duration of your holiday can also impact the price of your insurance. Our International Comprehensive Single Trip policy  covers you for a single return journey of up to 365 days.

3. Who you travel with

Our International Comprehensive policy provides cover for dependent children (aged under 21 years old at the date your insurance starts) under the policy of their guardian for no extra cost.

4. Your excess

The excess you choose will affect the price of your policy. An ‘excess’ is the amount you’ll pay in the event you need to make a claim with us. The higher your excess, the lower the premium of your policy. When you're looking at multiple insurers, make sure the excesses are as similar as possible, to get a more 'like-for-like' comparison.

5. Whether you are taking high value items with you

Travel insurance often includes cover for the items you're taking with you. However, if you're travelling with items that are a higher value items than the standard benefit limit, it can affect the price of your insurance. If you'd like to cover these items, you may need to specify them when you purchase your policy and pay an additional premium.

6. What activities you do

At Southern Cross Travel Insurance, we give you the flexibility to tailor your plan. For example, if you’re going sightseeing on a motorbike, heading on a cruise  or skiing in the mountains you can add cover for these activities. It’s important though that you also read and understand the general exclusions of your policy before you buy. For example, under our policies, you won’t be covered if you’re mountaineering in certain circumstances or participating in any professional sports.

7. Your pre-existing medical conditions

With our International Comprehensive and Domestic policies you can carry out a medical assessment to see if we can offer you cover for your pre-existing medical conditions. It only takes a few minutes to do and, if we can offer you cover, you can decide if you want to add it and pay the extra premium.

8. How often you travel

How frequently you travel is another thing to consider when finding the right policy for you. If you’re travelling internationally more than three times in a year, our Annual Multi-trip policy could be a cheaper option. Under the policy, you’re covered for 12 months from the start date of insurance you select, no matter how many times you travel. You can also select the number of days you’ll be covered for each trip - from up to 30, 60 or 90 days. The trip duration can change your overall pricing, so be sure to check before purchasing your policy.

Find travel insurance promotions

Travel insurers often run promotions that can be a great way to get yourself in the draw for a little extra on your next trip. Keep an eye out to see what’s running, when you’re looking to buy your policy. Check out our current promotions  here.

If you’re a Southern Cross Health Society Member, you also get an additional 5% of the base premium of your policy.

TRAVEL INSURANCE FAQ'S

We understand that travel insurance can be confusing, here are some of our most common questions.

Q. Can I buy a policy if I have already departed New Zealand?

Q. i am currently still on my trip and my policy ended, can i extend my policy, q. does tinz cover natural disasters, q. am i covered for riding a motorbike overseas.

  • Yes, you’re covered to ride a motorbike provided that: - You are licensed to ride a motorbike in New Zealand. - You hold a valid motorbike licence for the country you are in. - You wear a helmet at all times while riding. You can ride a motorcycle that is the same capacity you are licensed to ride in Australia. If your licence restricts the engine size you can ride, then you will need to stick to that when you are away. Learn more in our guide to riding motorbikes and scooters overseas.

Q. What doesn’t travel insurance cover?

  • It's important to be aware that all travel insurance policies have 'exclusions'. So, there are some things that we just can't cover you for. These certainly aren’t secret and can be found in our policy wording, but we want to highlight some of the things you’re unlikely to be covered for so that you can make smart decisions when heading on holiday. - You are generally not covered for reckless behaviour or deliberately putting yourself in harms way. - Not taking care of your personal belongings, such as leaving your things behind in public places. - You’rer not covered if you were drunk and the consumption of alcohol contributed to your loss. As for illegal recreational drugs, you're definitely not covered. - We have a general exclusion in relation to pandemics and epidemics. - You are not covered for pre-existing medical conditions that you failed to tell us about or take cover for. - You are not covered for events already known in the mass media at the time of purchasing your policy. Even though our policies have these exclusions, all TINZ customers are entitled to lodge a claim for review, which would be assessed based on individual facts and circumstances.

Q. Does TINZ cover pre-existing medical conditions?

  • Yes, don't let an existing medical condition get in the way of your travels. We cover 35 medical conditions automatically for free. Any other conditions need to be declared through our easy online medical assessment. See more information about pre-existing illnesses here.

Q. Am I covered for a family emergency?

  • Both TINZ’s Comprehensive & Comprehensive plans cover for additional travel expenses such as your return flight to New Zealand if a relative of either you, or travelling companion requires hospitalisation or dies unexpectedly. (no excess applies)

Q. What sports activities are covered by TINZ travel insurance?

  • TINZ gives you the freedom to take that heart-pounding leap - worry free! Our optional Sports & Activities Cover provides you with cover for a range of more adventurous activities not covered under a standard policy. We cover things like cycling, snorkelling (depth limits apply) and water skiing for free. We offer extra cover for activities like canyoning, abseiling, trekking above 3000 meters. See our sports adventure activities page for more information.

Q. What is TINZ’s terrorism cover?

  • While many travel insurers exclude cover for cancellation fees and lost deposits in the event of terrorism, under our Frequent Traveller and Comprehensive Plus plans we allow you to cancel in the event that MFAT travel warnings restrict you from travel. We provide $10 million worth of medical cover if you’re injured in a terror attack. Conditions apply. See more information about our terrorism cover here.

I was a little hesitant to stay on the call when I first picked up but I’m glad I stayed until I did. Josua Legavai was the lovely lady taking care of me. She was so friendly, clear and helpful. She helped me understand everything I needed to and explained everything with great detail. I am still young and learning and have just moved into a new home with my son so I’m grateful she was able to help me today.

I'm so happy I asked Glimp for help, to find a service provider that suits our family's budget, without losing quality and unlimited data on both our mobile phones and broadband. Mele Falahola is a Comparison Specialist from Glimp and she was amazing from the beginning. Mele located the right service provider for our needs that will save us money!, fulfil our usage and more! compared to what we were using. My wife and I even asked for a comparison on our electricity bill. Mele responded immediately once she saw our monthly bills and compared it to another provider that not only do not required a contract to stick too (like the mobile and broadband provider Mele recommended) but their price per kWh was so much better! Which is why we changed that also. Thank you Mele and Glimp for your help. We can now look forward to our Christmas holiday in the Cook Islands from what we can now save. :-)

International

With three plans to choose from, our International Insurance cover is designed to make sure you can still enjoy your holiday even if something goes south.

AA Travel Insurance Benefits:

  • AA Member discount

AA Members can get a 10% discount* on new AA Travel Insurance policies. Simply provide your AA Membership number when you apply.

  • Cover for missed connections or travel delay

If you miss connections or have any travel delays because of an unexpected situation, you’ll be able to claim up to the benefit limit of your chosen policy. That means cover for extra costs to make alternative travel arrangements or additional delay costs.

  • Free cover for dependent children

Dependent children travelling with someone covered under a policy can be covered at no additional charge (for Domestic Cover – that's up to 18 years, and for International Cover – up to 21 years).

  • Cover for some COVID-related situations^

Both domestic and international options include selected cover for epidemic and pandemic diseases, like COVID-19. So if you’re diagnosed on your trip and need medical assistance or need to change your plans, you’ll be covered.

  • Cover before you depart

Your trip is protected from unforeseen cancellation and loss of deposits the moment your cover is confirmed.

  • Cover for recreational activities

Some recreational sports are automatically covered under our policies, including leisure skiing and snowboarding, hot air ballooning, parasailing and paragliding, bungee jumping, and white-water rafting in grade 4 rivers (or less).

For all of these benefits, please make sure you read the Policy Wording to understand the terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions that may apply.

^The policy still has a general exclusion for epidemics and pandemics, and does not cover disinclination to travel due to fear or change of mind. Cover is only provided if you have not commenced your journey against the New Zealand Government’s advice not to travel. There is no cover for lockdowns, changes in government alert levels, quarantine or mandatory isolation applying to a population or part of a population. Please refer to the Policy Wording for full details.

^Terms, conditions, limits, sub-limits and exclusions apply and these are stated in the Policy Wording . Customers considering the purchase of a travel insurance policy should read the Policy Wording to check what is and isn’t covered.

Frequently asked questions

What countries does my selected cover^ for epidemic and pandemic diseases (including Covid-19) cover?

All countries that do not appear on the Level 4 warning “Do not travel” advisory listed on SafeTravel.

SafeTravel houses all warnings inclusive of non-Covid-19 advisories which are issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT).

If I contract Covid-19 prior to travelling do I have selected cover^ for epidemic and pandemic diseases?

Cover is in place, providing that the country you are travelling to does not have a MFAT, SafeTravel or New Zealand Government Level 4 warning “Do not travel” in place.

If I contract Covid-19 in transit to my destination country do I have selected cover^ for epidemic and pandemic diseases?

Cover is in place, providing that the countries you are travelling to do not have a MFAT, SafeTravel or New Zealand Government Level 4 warning “Do not travel” in place.

Does selected cover^ for epidemic and pandemic diseases still apply if I am unvaccinated?

Cover is in place as there is no requirement to be vaccinated/boosted under our policy. However, if the destination country requires an inbound traveller to be vaccinated, then the traveller must be able to meet these entry requirements. This also applies to the condition of carriage for example of the airline they are travelling. There is no cover if denied boarding or entry to a country due to not meeting the carrier or country vaccination requirements.

Are there any mandatory epidemic and pandemic insurance requirements to enter certain countries?

Many countries, even before the pandemic, had compulsory health and travel insurance requirements, but many more have since added rules – typically around Covid-19 medical expenses and the associated costs. The coverage type and amount varies by vaccination status and country.  Prior to travelling, check with the nearest embassy, consulate or immigration department of the destination.

If I had Covid-19, should I declare this as a Pre-existing Medical Condition?

At the time of purchasing your policy if you have previously had Covid-19 and are now testing negative, are feeling well with no symptoms at all, then you do not need to declare this as a Pre-existing Medical Condition. A Covid-19 positive test result at a later date would be considered a new infection.

However, if you are:

  • still testing positive; or
  • still displaying Covid-19 signs and symptoms; or
  • have been diagnosed with 'long Covid';

and you wish to have cover, you need to disclose the condition as a Pre-existing Medical Condition and an additional premium may be payable.
