About these fares

Rail & Sail fares include train travel from any Greater Anglia railway station to Harwich , including London Liverpool Street, Stratford, Cambridge, Colchester, Chelmsford, Norwich, Ipswich, Ely, Romford, Ilford, Bishop's Stortford.  Simply check train fares & times to Harwich International using www.nationalrail.co.uk .  Allow plenty of time (at least 45 minutes, preferably more) to connect with the ferry at Harwich.

From Edinburgh, York, Birmingham, Leicester, Leeds, Newcastle, Nottingham & so on all you need is a ticket to Ely as your rail & sail ticket is valid from any Greater Anglia station on any Greater Anglia train.  Or you can go via London, which may be faster & no more expensive.

The fare is to/from Hoek van Holland, it no longer covers travel to Any Dutch station as NS pulled out of this RailSail fares arrangement in 2019.

Onwards to Germany:   Use the German Railways website int.bahn.de to find train times & buy a ticket from Schiedam Centrum or Rotterdam Alexander to Cologne, Frankfurt or Southern Germany by ICE train .  That way you won't need a Dutch train ticket, just the RET metro ticket.

Luggage, dogs & bikes

You can take as much luggage as you can carry, there are no weight or size limits.  Just remember you will have to handle it!  You keep your luggage with you throughout the journey, putting it on the luggage racks on the trains and taking it into your cabin on the ferry.  On the day sailing, if you don't have a cabin it can be left in a luggage room that will be locked during the crossing.

You can't use a Rail & Sail ticket if you want to take a bike, as they have removed the ability to add a bike to a Rail & Sail booking.  But you can still take a bike on this train & ferry service if you buy separate train & ferry tickets, still great value, especially if you use an advance-purchase ticket for the rail part of the journey.  Full details of costs and how to buy tickets with a bike are explained on the bikes by train page .

Dogs & pets

You can take your dog or cat under the PETS travel scheme, if you reserve an on-board kennel.  Buy a Rail & Sail ticket in the normal way at www.stenaline.co.uk/rail-and-sail/to-holland , and at the stage where you enter the number of passengers and select a cabin, simply enter the number of animals requiring a reserved kennel.  Dogs go free on the train from London to Harwich.  On Dutch trains, small dogs or cats go free if they are in a container on your lap, for a larger dog you'll need to buy a Dog Day Card (Dagkart Hond) for about €3 - you can buy this at the guest services desk on deck 9 on board the Stena Line ferry.  For more information see the taking your dog or pet page .

How to buy tickets starting in the UK

You can buy a one-way or round trip Rail & Sail ticket from London or any Greater Anglia station to Hoek van Holland.  You used to be able to buy tickets to Any Dutch Station, but NS ceased co-operating in 2019, so just book Rail & Sail to Hoek van Holland.

I recommend booking a cabin on the day crossing even though it's optional as it's half-price and somewhere to relax, freshen up or watch TV.

A Rail & Sail ticket to Hoek van Holland includes the train from London or any Greater Anglia station (including Cambridge, Norwich) to Harwich and the ferry to Hoek.  You can add a cabin & meals, and (if you have a dog) reserve a kennel.  However, you can't add a bike with RailSail.

You print your own ticket, this .pdf printout is all you need to board the train in London (or any Greater Anglia station) & check in for the ferry.

To buy one-way or return tickets starting in the Netherlands you must use Stena Line's Dutch website as explained below .

If you're from the USA , try booking at www.stenaline.co.uk .  If your payment card is rejected, (a) create an account at the end of the booking process and it'll save your booking with a reference number, (b) call Stena Line on +44 343 208 1801 between 08:00 & 17:00 London time, quote your booking reference and they will take your card details over the phone.  Feedback appreciated .  The Stena website gives a toll-free US number to call, but this doesn't work, so use the UK one.

To buy tickets by phone , call Stena Line on 03443 350 027 (lines open 08:30-20:00 Mondays-Fridays, 09:00-18:00 Saturdays, 09:00-17:00 Sundays, all cabin & meal options can be sold).  A booking fee applies to phone bookings.

To buy in person at London Liverpool Street station ticket office:  You can buy tickets on the day, but places are limited and fares cheaper if you book in advance.  It's also better to buy from Stena Line, as rail companies can only offer regular cabin, not Comfort or Captain's class.

Step 2, buy a ticket for the Dutch Railways from Schiedam Centrum to Amsterdam.

The easy way :  On NS (Dutch Railways) you can now simply touch in & touch out with any Visa or MasterCard debit or credit card, or with your phone if it's linked to your card.  There's no need to buy a ticket or pre-plan, just place your debit or credit card against the reader on the ticket gate at the beginning of your journey and it will open.  Do the same at the other end.  The fare will be debited from your bank account.

The regular way: If you want to travel 1st class and/or need tickets for children, you'll need to buy normal tickets in the normal way.

Go to the NS (Dutch Railways) website www.ns.nl , click In English top right.

If going to Amsterdam, run an enquiry from Hoek van Holland Haven to Amsterdam Centraal .  It'll show combined metro+train journeys, and it'll sell you a ticket for the NS mainline train part of the journey (i.e. not including the metro).

The ticket you want is Price with e-ticket, click the yellow buy button below that.

This is an open ticket good for any train that day, so it doesn't matter what time train you buy it for.  It cannot sell out, the price is fixed, you can buy it on the day if you like.  NS return tickets are for coming back the same-day, if staying away for longer than a day, buy two one-ways.

How to buy tickets starting in the Netherlands

Leave it in Dutch and use Google/Chrome Translate where necessary.

Select Hoek van Holland as starting point and Elk Greater Anglia station in UK as destination .

Retour is return, Enkele reis is one-way.  Heenreis is outward, Terugreis is inward.  All very straightforward, even in Dutch!

You print your own ticket, this is all you need to board the Stena Line ferry & take the train from Harwich to London or any Greater Anglia station.

To buy tickets by phone:   Stena Line's Dutch telesales line is 0900-8123 if calling from the Netherlands or +31 174 315 811 if calling from overseas, lines open 08:30-18:00 Monday-Friday, 09:00-17:00 Saturdays, Dutch time .

Step 2, buy a Dutch train ticket from Amsterdam to Schiedam Centrum .

The easy way :  NS (Dutch Railways) allow you to touch in & out with any Visa or MasterCard debit or credit card, or with your phone if you've linked it to your debit card.  There's no need to buy a ticket or pre-plan, just place your bank card against the reader on the ticket gate at the beginning of your journey and it will open.  Do the same at the other end.  The fare will be debited from your bank account.

The regular way:  If you want to travel 1st class and/or need tickets with child discount, you need to buy tickets in the normal way.  Go to the NS (Dutch Railways) website www.ns.nl , click In English top right, and buy tickets.  You print your own ticket or can show it in the NS app.

Step 3, buy a metro ticket from Schiedam Centrum to Hoek van Holland Haven (or from Rotterdam Alexander to Hoek van Holland if changing from NS to the metro there), you can buy this on the day.  You want a RET 2-hour ticket for around €4.

What's the journey like ?

1.  london to harwich by train.

The train to Harwich International leaves from London Liverpool Street station in the City of London, see station location map .

There is no check-in, just board the train any time before it leaves.  The departure board will tell you which platform it leaves from, staff will let you through the ticket gates if you show your Stena Line e-ticket.  The Stena e-ticket is all you need for this train journey.

The train is air-conditioned with free WiFi & toilets.  There are no reserved seats, you sit where you like, you'll have no problem finding a seat.  Luggage goes on the racks or simply on the floor.  It's just 82 minutes to Harwich, you can also board the train at Stratford, Shenfield, Chelmsford, Colchester & Manningtree.

Tip 1:   On a weekday evening, Liverpool Street station is busy with commuters and the station bars can be hectic.  A more peaceful place to wait with a coffee or beer is the Eastway Brasserie ( eastwaybrasserie.co.uk ) or 1901 Wine Lounge , both part of the Andaz London Liverpool Street Hotel , formerly the historic Great Eastern Hotel.  Go up the big escalators opposite platforms 1-4, exit the station and turn left along the station facade.

Tip 2:    Tickets are good for any train, not just the advertised ferry connections.  When connecting with the night boat, why not catch an earlier train from London to Manningtree, have a pint and some food in the excellent station bar on the platform there , then travel on to Harwich?

Tip 3:   If you want to be first onto the ship at Harwich, sit at the rear of the train - although the front will be emptier if you want to spread out.

2. Harwich to Hoek van Holland by Stena Line ferry

At Harwich, the train arrives directly at the ferry terminal - you'll see the ship on your left as the train pulls in.  Walk back along the platform towards the rear of the train, head up over the footbridge (there's a lift if you have heavy luggage or mobility problems) then go through the glass doors at the London end of the platform into the ferry terminal and up the escalators to the first floor.

Boarding the ferry:   This is a breeze compared to airports or even the queues at St Pancras for boarding Eurostar.  Walk through the door marked Departures.  Stena Line staff will check your ticket as you enter.  Then you put your bags through the X-ray machine and walk through the metal detector, and have your passport checked by UK Border Force.  At the check-in desk, Stena Line staff scan the barcode on your e-ticket and print your cabin key.  Now you walk up the passenger gangway onto the Stena Line ferry.  Outside peak periods It can take as little as 15 minutes from train to ship.

On board:   You enter the ship on deck 7, take stairs or lift to deck 9 where all the passenger facilities are located including bars, restaurant, shop, lounges & the guest services desk.  All cabins are on decks 10 & 11.  There is open deck towards the stern on deck 9 for some sea air and a sealed & ventilated smoking lounge forward on deck 9 if you're a smoker.  The Stena Plus Lounge has complimentary tea, coffee, red & white wine, snacks & soft drinks.  On a day crossing, I recommend paying for a private cabin (they're half price by day), as you can snooze, shower, watch TV, or just relax or work in privacy.

WiFi:   WiFi is available on board on deck 9 and in cabins, free for email & simple browsing with a paid-for package for faster higher-bandwidth access.  You can use your normal mobile phone data while the ferry is in or near port.  Switch it to flight mode when at sea.

All-weather reliable and steady as a rock.   I've never known these ferries cancelled or hit by strikes.  They normally run spot on time, I've only ever known them late once, and that was a (more tightly-timed) January daytime crossing making headway into a Force 11 storm.  The Stena Line superferries are 63,000 tons GT (Gross Tonnage), the largest Ro-Pax ships serving the UK, steady as a rock in almost all weathers.  Indeed, crossing in winter as a 'named' Force 10 storm lashed the North Sea, I fell asleep before she sailed, woke briefly in the night and felt some minor undulation, fell asleep again and woke at Harwich as we arrived spot on time.  I've sailed to the Netherlands at Christmas watching BBC news on our cabin TV about Heathrow closed due of snow and all flights grounded - the Stena Liner sailed & arrived spot on time as always.  In contrast to flights (and even Eurostar) this is the all-weather reliable route!

Lights ablaze, restaurant & bars already open, the ferry boards at Harwich International.  Click the images below for larger photos.

Lounge and cafe , aft on deck 9 aboard the Stena Britannica .  So civilised compared to an airline seat.

Self-service restaurant , forward on deck 9.  The food counter is out of shot to the right.

Stena Plus lounge

You can book a place in the Stena Plus lounge for £25 or pay on board if space is available.  It's quiet and peaceful with complimentary red & white wine, soft drinks, tea & coffee, cakes & snacks.  Main dishes can be ordered from the steward at extra cost and served at your seat.  On the night crossing a complimentary breakfast is provided including croissant, pain au chocolat, bacon and scrambled egg, a more extensive breakfast can be paid for.  Children under 8 are not admitted.  The lounge was relocated and enlarged in January 2024, replacing the former à la carte restaurant.  Highly recommended!

Stena Plus.  Below left, beef stroganoff & complimentary wine.  Below right, complimentary scrambled egg & bacon on the night crossing.

Choice of cabin

A private cabin is compulsory on the night boat, optional (but half-price and a good idea) on the day boat.  All cabins have an en suite toilet & shower, satellite TV, all necessary bedding, towels, soap & shampoo.  There a desk with power sockets (UK 3-pin & European 2-pin) for laptops & mobiles.  Outside cabins have a window, inside cabins don't.  The satellite TV has BBC1, BBC2, ITV, Channel 4, and several Dutch Channels, plus a channel showing a forward view from the bridge and a channel which cycles through CCTV camera in the kennels so you can see your dog.  Click the images for larger photos.

3. Hoek van Holland to Schiedam Centrum by metro

Disembarkation:   Foot passengers gather on Deck 9 near the guest services desk as the ship docks, when the gangway opens just after docking you simply walk off the ship along the gangway into the Stena Line terminal.  Your passport is checked by the Dutch police, then you walk out of the terminal building through the main rotating glass doors and across the forecourt to the RET (Rotterdam Transit) metro station.  You can often be off the ship and onto a metro train in as little as 15 minutes.

Now take the metro!   You don't need to have a ticket, just a hold a valid contactless bank card against the card reader on the metro station ticket gates and they will open.  Your account will be debited with the adult one-way fare when you exit the metro at the end of your metro journey, it's as simple as that.  If you have bought a metro ticket on your phone or at the self-service ticket machines, the barcode will operate the ticket gates.

Hoek van Holland is the starting point for metro line B, trains run every 20 minutes weekdays, every 30 minutes weekends, taking 23 minutes to Schiedam Centrum, 30 minutes to downtown Rotterdam & 50 minutes to Rotterdam Alexander.  The end destination of line B is Nesselande .  Luggage goes with you, on the floor or in a special luggage area.

Get off at Schiedam Centrum for mainline trains to Den Haag, Leiden, Haarlem & Amsterdam Centraal .

Get off at Eendrachtsplein and walk to Rotterdam Centraal , an easy 850m 11 minute stroll, see walking map .  Or if you'd rather not walk, take the metro from Hoek van Holland to Beurs and change onto metro line D or E 2 stops to Rotterdam Centraal .

Get off at Rotterdam Alexander for mainline trains to Gouda, Utrecht, Amersfoort, Zwolle, Groningen & Leeuwarden.  There are no ticket gates at Rotterdam Alexander (at least, there weren't last time I was there), so remember to touch out from the metro & touch in again on the mainline platform if you are using a contactless bank card.  Touching in and out is not necessary if you have a print-at-home ticket.

The Hoek of Holland-Rotterdam metro started running on 30 September 2019, after two years converting this former mainline route to light rail.  The metro runs above ground all the way to Schiedam, over a right of way that until the 1990s was used by expresses from Hoek of Holland to places as far afield as Copenhagen or Moscow, running in connection with the ferries.  A historic link!

Hoek van Holland metro station, literally just across the road from the ferry terminal main exit, the ferry terminal is out of shot to the left.  There are ticket gates at the entrance to the platforms.  You want the platform on the left for trains to Schiedam & Rotterdam.  Metro photo courtesy of www.youtube.com/@MidlandLondon .

4. Schiedam Centrum to Amsterdam by Intercity train

For Delft, Den Haag, Leiden, Haarlem or Amsterdam, get off the metro at Schiedam Centrum.  Schiedam Centrum has 4 metro platforms & 5 mainline platforms.  The metro arrives on one side of the station, the train to Amsterdam leaves from platform 5 on the other side.  Go down the escalators or lift from the metro platform, out through the metro ticket gates, then through the NS (Dutch Railways) ticket gates using a contactless bank card or by scanning the barcode on your e-ticket or printed ticket, then up the escalators or lift to platform 5.

The Dutch Intercity train to Amsterdam is double-deck, get an upstairs seat for the best views.  There are toilets & free WiFi on board.  Luggage goes on the racks or in the gaps between seat backs.  You arrive at Amsterdam Centraal, walking distance from almost all of Amsterdam's sights.  See Amsterdam Centraal station guide .

Boarding the double-deck Intercity train at Schiedam Centrum, platform 5.

Tips for c hanging at Rotterdam Alexander

If you're travelling between Hoek van Holland and Gouda, Utrecht, Amersfoort, Zwolle, Leeuwarden or Groningen, it's quickest and easiest to change between metro & NS mainline trains at Rotterdam Alexander, a little way east of central Rotterdam.

Rotterdam Alexander is only a small station, with 2 metro platforms at street level & 2 Dutch Railways high-level platforms on an embankment reached by stairs, escalator or lift.

When travelling eastbound from London & Hoek van Holland you want NS (Dutch Railways) platform 1 for Utrecht & beyond.

When travelling westbound towards London you want metro platform 1 for Hoek van Holland.

Top 4 airlines serving from london to amsterdam.

Quick and efficient as always. Air France managed to loose and damage my luggage that never made it onto my KLM flight.

The food from Lagos to Amsterdam was was very poor compared to AMS-YYZ

The flight was again delayed for more then 2 hours with some lousy explanation regarding the reason of the delay. Although the flight was delayed for more than 2 hours, no refreshments were offered (according to EU regulations). Last 4 flights on KLM - always at least 2 hrs late. So be prepared that you cannot plan anything with KLM.

Booked connecting flights with KlM. My serving flight was the furthest part of the airport. On arrival in Zurich. My two cases arrived but only one carry on belong to my son. His three suitcase didn't arrive. After enquiring we discovered they were still in Amsterdam. We landed at 11.12. We eventually left the airport just after one.

Seats are fair enough for medium tall people. Good food all the trip. Fight attendances are warm

I thought KLM was the best airline but the Lima - Amsterdam was 1 hours late, the Brussels - Amsterdam was 2.30 hours late and the Amsterdam - Lima was 30 minutes late

no issues at all... Kudos to the food. This time was really really good

Overall a good experience. We were disappointed when we had to check our carry on due to the plane being full. KLM hadn’t notified us and we had valuable items in the carry on but they still made us check it. Some of the food was great and some was mediocre. Crew is really kind and funny.

One of the vstewardeses wanted to bump me of the plane for absolutely nothing. There is CCTV in the plane ans everything can be verified. Very disappointing , you all will see, o other 5 years and the passangers who does not smile to flight attendent will be bumped off...

I travel frequently. The flight was late again... KLM should really try and be on time

Be sure to check bags for 23 kg,.(50 lbs) Coming from US I chose the wrong size luggage weight when I checked in on my phone, and had to pay more when I dropped it off

The on board air steward really made the journey. He was very entertaining

I was disappointed there was a 40 minute delay to flight

The trip itself was good. I have given only good as rating, because my first flight has been cancelled by a different airline and that caused disruption in my trip. I spent over ten hours in Luton airport and that caused me high tiredness, sickness, because of the very early initial trip. easyJet staff has been professional and friendly.

Very pleasant crew, working hard on a full plane. Delay by a broken seat. However crew made back 60% of the delay.

Delayed and then further delayed with no announcement made so that all the passengers (who were standing in the jetty) could hear. We stood there for well over 20 minutes. We were further delayed through weather but no one explained that to us until the pilot made an announcement when finally on board

easyJet need to ensure that whether pre-booking seats or not children aren’t split from their parents the crew spent the majority of boarding asking passengers to move to accommodate two families. Surely the system identifies minors on a booking !!!!! It was all very frustrating to watch and caused delays which I’m sure cost easyJet more in the long run rather that automatically allocating families with minors seats together automatically.

Not great! Rude staff in London and the worse baggage reclaim I’ve ever seen. Great staff in flight but doubt I’ll fly with them again

Staff had been really impolite at the boarding area and for both ways charged high extra fees without a reason. For the check-in luggage which was measured 3.5 kg and was confirmed by the stuff to cost 40 € , 60 Euros had been purchased from our credit card. When confronted staff did call us both liars and claimed to never have announced anything. Flight back , when not wanting to press a backpack in a measuring metal instead of hand measuring , staff got angry that one did not follow her order, which was than escalated by the team. Although carrying a baby anyways staff did not offer any help in the unreasonable process and than charged again extra money. Cabine crew has been friendly but this experience LL lead to not booking easy jet at all in the future. Check in process in Edinburgh anyways chaotic,to the family check-in and disabled check-in everybody else was guided for check in process, so people just getting in between each other, not possible to monitor your own stuff.

As you would expect from a budget airline Left and arrived on time, no frills, not even a glass of water offered But you get what you pay for

East check in and security. They are always delayed though. ALWAYS!

Amazed at huge number of people who hadn’t booked cabin bags with big troller cases and rucksacks, not being stopped, what’s the point in following rules or paying more if you don't have to bother?

Worse situation ever. Arriving at 4 am with 7 Hours of delay

Booked extra legroom seats but as plane had changed we ended up with normal seats. Very little attempt from staff to sort it out

It was delayed and there was no apology or any updates as to why. It was genuinely awful

Flight was late boarding was poor. Economy boarded at the same time as premium. No space overhead for my cabin bag late arrival into Paphos.

The seat could have had more cushioning. My backside was sore after 30 minutes of the flight

It got us their! Delays Delays delayed, flight got in well after specified time, rental car firms shut at 11pm!!!! So from £300 for car to £689.. thank you Ryanair....

Seats very uncomfortable for a 4 hour flight, what entertainment? Food overpriced. But sure it’s Ryan Air, what else would I expect?

The distance between seats was narrow. So my recommendation is to increase it

Shocking. Bumped off the flight as they had overbooked and given my seat to someone else. Rebooked for 24 hours later with no effort to get me there the same day. Staff don't care if you are going to miss events...they give you a hotel voucher and that's it.

Great experience overall, no issues with boarding, flight crew or services on board.

My husband’s and my seats were changed without our knowledge or approval so that we were on opposite sides of the plane, several rows apart, instead of window seats in consecutive rows (12A and 13A.). My “new” seat, 15A was right next to the bathroom and several children. My husband’s “new” seat (10G) had a defective screen, so he was unable to watch any movies during the flight. Paying for business class seats should mean I receive business class accommodations, or at the very least, my original seat selection. On the plus side, the crew was attentive and friendly, even when some young mother with screaming children (who were seated by me in my reassigned seat) went ballistic at another passenger. All in all, a way below average flight for which I paid premium prices. A very disappointing end to a wonderful trip to Europe.

Captain handled the precaution of return to stand very well.

I always regard BA as a distress purchase. It is rock bottom in terms of service.

Delayed so we landed 80 minutes late. Also the steward agreed we had unusually powerful AC above our seats which he couldn’t control so we were very cold throughout the journey . Food used to be better before. David our steward was excellent

The plane was delayed. That was only downside to flight. Crew was very nice

We have a lot to say when BA cancelled our flight the last minute and put us on Air France’s already overbooked flight; and took no responsibility to ensure we are safe and met our travels. It’s day 2 and we have not reached our final destination yet. BA took no responsibility, but were happy to keep the money! If it were not for third party ground staff at Dallas BA we would have not gotten to India. BA has a lot to answer!

Very good flight. Delayed but no due to any fault of the airline. Food service is half a sandwich and crackers with a chocolate pot for a 5 hour flight so eat before boarding.

The lack of leg room for a 6 foot person makes for an extremely uncomfortable flight over the pond. Short little puddle jumper from Paris to London and back no big deal, but nine hours in a tiny and unbelievably hard seat makes me not want to do that ever again. This is my third trip to Normandy. FYI.

Ready to hop on board me hearty? Head on over to Stena Line’s Dutch website to book your combined ticket.

Amsterdam to London by car

None of the options above take your fancy? It is possible to drive from Amsterdam to London by car if you’re more of a rev-head or transporting a bunch of stuff. The route takes you down through Belgium and into France.

In France, you’ll find the Channel Tunnel — the tunnel with the longest underwater section in the world. It also has an adorable nickname: The Chunnel.

Woman-and-man-in-car-driving-into-the-light-of-dawn

You don’t actually  drive  through the Channel Tunnel. Instead, you load your car onto a specially designed train called the Eurotunnel Shuttle and sit in your car while the train shuttles you underwater to the UK. This part of the trip is only 35 minutes.

You can take pets on the shuttle, or if you’re cycling around, you can put your bike on and travel in a special minibus.

How much does the Eurotunnel Shuttle cost?

The shuttle charges by car (not by passenger), and prices start from just €72. If you’re travelling with a big family or a group of friends, this can be cost-effective. Remember to factor in gas and tolls for your journey too!

How long does it take to travel from Amsterdam to London by car?

The trip from Amsterdam to London by car will take you around 6.5 hours, depending on traffic and waiting time for the ferry.

6 Tips For Taking The Train From London To Amsterdam

travel london amsterdam

  • Destinations
  • European Rail
  • The Netherlands
  • Types of Travel
  • United Kingdom

The Dutch city of Amsterdam has always been popular with tourists, but most visitors have traditionally traveled there by plane. This includes myself. A few years ago, I took a weekend trip from the UK to Amsterdam by air. It was fast, easy, and inexpensive. I never even thought of getting the train. But all of that has changed now, and with rising awareness of climate change, delays and disruptions at airports, and the rising cost of air travel, more and more people are switching to land and sea as better ways to travel.

It takes just under 4 hours to get to Amsterdam from London by train , faster than getting to Edinburgh from London! There used to be a change at Brussels on the way, but it’s now an uninterrupted journey without any stops, making it a smooth and seamless trip. But if you haven’t done it before, there are a few things to bear in mind. Here are my six tips for taking the train from London to Amsterdam .

1. Booking A Ticket

Wherever you plan to travel using the Eurostar , it’s best to book early and directly through its website. You’ll be getting the best price available, and if you book early, you’ll be getting it cheaper than if you purchase closer to your scheduled time. Sometimes tickets can be as low as 20 euros ($19.93) when booked in advance.

Your choice of tickets are: standard, standard premier, and business class. The main difference in these is the amount of legroom you are offered in your seat and the catering options available to you. Business class is roomy with waiter service at your seat and the option of a three-course meal. But standard is still a really good choice. The seats are comfortable and there’s a good variety of snacks and drinks from the canteen. You can download your ticket to your phone, which most travelers do, or you can print it out and use the QR code for scanning at the gates.

2. Be Prepared

Make sure you get to the station at St. Pancras early. If you’re confused about the station in London, know that St. Pancras and Kings Cross appear to be the same building, but they are actually separate, and the Eurostar departs from St. Pancras.

Depending on how busy it is, getting through security can take anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour, so it’s worth getting there in plenty of time. Security isn’t as strict as it is at an airport. You might be asked to remove shoes and belts, though not always, but it’s unlikely you’ll need to take out laptops or liquids from your carry-on bag.

Be ready with your passport, as any member of staff can ask to see it. EU travelers can go through the E gates, but everyone else has to wait in line for their passport to be checked. This can take a while, but again, it depends on how busy the station is on the day you travel. If you’re traveling standard class, make sure to bring some snacks if you don’t want to pay the canteen prices on the train. You can take food onto the train, and it’s much cheaper to buy from a kiosk in the station before you board.

3. Know Your Ticket

The waiting area is a bit like an airport lounge. There’s plenty of seating, so you can relax while you wait. Information about your train will appear on the screens, so keep a look out for boarding. There’s always a bit of a scramble once boarding is announced, but you can take your time to make your way through. Don’t be tempted to join in with the rush, there’s plenty of time to get to the train. The dash for the train can get a bit claustrophobic, so hang back and relax; you’re not going to miss the train because you didn’t stampede forward with the crowd.

Make sure you know your carriage and seat numbers before you approach the train. It’s best to familiarize yourself with these while you relax in the waiting lounge. It can be tricky to move down the train if you’re in the wrong carriage, and as people are maneuvering to find their seats, knowing which one is yours makes your life easier.

4. Enjoy The Journey

One of the greatest things about traveling through Europe by train, rather than plane, is the scenery. You can sit back, relax, and enjoy the beautiful landscapes you pass. On a plane, all you see is sky and the map-like land below you. On the train, you are literally a part of the landscape you’re moving through.

You’ll be on the train for about 30 minutes before you reach the Channel Tunnel, or ‘Chunnel’ as it’s affectionately termed, and then you’ll be traveling through it for about 20 minutes more. And then, you’ll emerge from the tunnel and travel through stunning scenery in northern France and Belgium, before entering the Netherlands and arriving in Amsterdam. You can sit back and watch this picture-perfect world go by, relax, and enjoy seeing some of France and Belgium before getting to your destination. Have a camera ready, you can capture some action shots and short videos of the scenery as it goes by.

5. Arriving In Amsterdam

When you arrive in Amsterdam, make sure you have your ticket ready, either on your phone or a paper ticket printed out before departure, as you’ll need it to scan in at the NS ticket gate before you can leave.

Amsterdam Central Station is a beautiful old-gothic building and it’s worth spending some time taking in the splendor of the architecture before you head out. It was designed by the same architect who designed the famous Rijksmuseum , which you’ll be able to see in the city. Having studied the station, you’ll see the similarities when you look at the museum. From the station, you have easy access to the metro system if you need to travel any distance to your hotel or you want to explore further afield. You can also pick up a free map of the city from the tourist office in the station, and there are plenty of cafes, restaurants, and shops if you need anything before you head off. The station is right in the center of the city and Amsterdam is very walkable, so you might find your hotel very nearby. The tram system is also right there by the station and you can easily catch a tram to your hotel if need be. The station can serve as a focal point for the city. Once you know where the transport is in relation to the station, you have your bearings.

6. Your Return Journey

I’m unsure if it takes any longer to get through security and passport control in Amsterdam, but officials there ask that you arrive 60–75 minutes before your train is due, rather than the 45–60 minutes that’s recommended in London. Ticket checks close 30 minutes before the train is due to depart and you can access the platform up to 90 minutes before your train. It’s always good to be there in plenty of time, in case there are lines building up and the station is busy. The Eurostar departs from platform 15B, but do check this before you make your way there. You can scan your tickets in the same way you did when you arrived at the Amsterdam station — at the NS ticket gate.

If you’re unsure whether to get the plane or the train from London to Amsterdam, I’d definitely encourage you to try the train. It’s a much more relaxed way to travel, and at just 4 hours, it’s a quick and easy journey to make.

TIP FROM KELVIN

“Very few people know about the tiny wine shop in the basement, where occasional intimate wine-tastings are held for no more than six people. It's even possible to arrange a bespoke tasting.”

Rosewood London

Rosewood knew what it was doing when it chose 252 High Holborn for its first London address. The building is an Edwardian treasure, rich in heritage features, including a grand staircase winding up towards the central dome above. Before entering, you pass through huge cast iron gates into an arched carriageway and across a cobbled courtyard. Inside, there’s an extensive art collection that includes a British bulldog statue wearing a Vivienne Westwood collar. Contemporary rooms are furnished in shades of grey, white, and taupe, and there are toiletries from British beauty brands. Even the spa incorporates local touches with treatments including a British rose facial and a detoxifying body treatment incorporating Epsom salts. Before sightseeing, tuck into complimentary daily breakfast for two at the Holborn Dining Room, known for its elevated British cuisine.

travel london amsterdam

TIP FROM MANDY

“Scarfe's Bar in the Rosewood is decorated with cartoons by Gerald Scarfe and exudes the atmosphere of a private member’s club. It regularly features on lists of the world’s best bars and is worth visiting for the nightly live jazz.”

The Ned London

The Ned London offers large open spaces and decor that pay homage to the former Midland Bank building’s 1920s Edwardian style. Each individually designed room channels the building's history with details like silk tasseled lampshades, velvet club chairs, and mirrored cocktail cabinets. Restaurants and bars serve food and drinks from around the world, and complimentary  daily breakfast for two  is an additional benefit provided by this property in The Hotel Collection. Ned’s Club Spa includes an indoor 20 meter lap pool, a sauna and a steam room, a Moroccan Hammam and a gents barbershop and ladies hair salon. Fittingly, the Ned is close to the also trendy Shoreditch neighborhood.

travel london amsterdam

“On Sundays, The Ned hosts what is possibly London’s most decadent brunch, 'Ned’s Feast.' There’s a huge selection of hot and cold dishes, including oysters and lobster, the term 'feast' here is not hyperbolic.”

The Savoy London, A Fairmont Managed Hotel

Opulent old-world style meets modern convenience at The Savoy, A Fairmont Managed Hotel . Rooms and suites feature silk wallpaper, Murano chandeliers, marble baths, and views of the River Thames. The Savoy Grill serves French-inspired British cuisine; book the Chef's Table Experience for a private room within the kitchen seating up to six diners. Rejuvenate at the Savoy's Beauty & Fitness area, or indulge in the complimentary mini bar. Venture out to explore hidden gems such as Neal's Yard, House of MinaLima, and the London Transport Museum, all within walking distance.

travel london amsterdam

“The short road leading up to the hotel entrance is famously the only public road in the country where cars must drive on the right-hand side of the road.”

The Dorchester

The Dorchester has been standing tall in Mayfair since 1931 and continues to attract politicians, celebrities, and other luminaries. Fresh off a 2023 renovation, the elegant, airy rooms and suites are done up with florals, hand-painted headboards, and pastels suggestive of an English garden. Many have expansive views of Hyde Park, and you can get a head start on exploring with 12pm check-in , when available. Keep an eye out for art as you navigate the hotel and consider popping into the Wine Vault, an intimate space within the kitchen that counts over 1,000 bottles and hosts tastings.

travel london amsterdam

“The Dorchester is one of London’s grand dame hotels, and its afternoon tea at the Promenade is a storied tradition. Ensconce yourself in a comfortable seat at the Promenade and spend a couple of hours people-watching.”

The Hari Hotel London

Feel like a Londoner when staying at The Hari , which is tucked away in Chesham Place, apart from the hustle-bustle. Accommodations feature marble bathrooms, and luxe textiles like leather, faux fur, and velvet. Select suites offer separate living areas, fireplaces, and private balconies. You might put the $100 credit towards a meal at Il Pampero, which takes inspiration from hearty southern Italian cuisine. Work it off with a ride on complimentary bikes.

travel london amsterdam

“Change up your usual drink order with art-inspired cocktails at the Hari Garden Bar & Terrace. Up Up and Away, made with hibiscus-infused gin, cherry liqueur, cranberry, and a bubble of smoke, is based on Banksy's 'Girl with a Balloon'.”

Mandarin Oriental Mayfair, London

The city’s art scene is on your doorstep at Mandarin Oriental Mayfair, London , a striking new glass-striped property perched on Hanover square amidst dozens of galleries. Interiors are sleek and stylish enough to keep pace with the tastemakers around, and décor is softened by organic patterns and hand-painted floral wallpaper. Indulge your inner epicurean and put your $100 credit toward   light bites and craft cocktails with skyline views at ABar Rooftop. Let your cares go at the sprawling spa, which offers a range of treatments that can all be complemented with binaural audio therapy, or take a dip in the long indoor pool, which is secluded in a cave like room studded with lights for an unearthly experience.

“Try on-site restaurant Akira Back, the first UK venture from the acclaimed chef himself, Akira Back, combining Japanese cuisine with Back's Korean heritage, for an all-day dining experience.”

A red awning and pink door usher you into a townhouse-like environment of patterned wallpapers, plush furnishings, and eye-catching art. Enjoy a bonus afternoon to relax or explore with guaranteed 4pm check-out .

travel london amsterdam

“One of London’s coolest hotels in terms of décor and vibe, as you would expect from its Soho location, with a wonderful, bookable rooftop bar that packs up in summer thanks to its outdoor terrace tables.”

Tate Modern

Formerly the Bankside Power Station, Tate Modern opened in 2000 and is one of the world's most popular art destinations ( tate.org.uk , admission is free). It hosts rotating exhibitions, workshops, educational events, and Tate Modern Lates, when it stays open after hours with DJ sets, food, and drinks. The gift shop is a great source for quirky, cool souvenirs, as is nearby Oxo Tower, which stocks Suck UK gift items ( suck.uk.com ). Borough Market, Shakespeare's Globe, St. Paul's Cathedral, and the London Eye are also all in the South Bank area.

Leighton House Museum

In the leafy and upmarket environs of Holland Park and often overlooked in favor of the more famous, larger London museums, the Leighton House Museum is the former home and studio of Frederic, Lord Leighton, a leading artist of the Victorian age ( rbkc.gov.uk/museums ). It embodies how we expect a great artist of the time to live and will charm art lovers.

The Tower of London

It's one of the first things that people want to see in London, and understandably so – the sense of history at the Tower of London is palpable. Ceremonial guardians, nicknamed the Beefeaters, regale visitors of all ages with tales of past kings and queens, including the wives of Henry VIII, some of whom met a gruesome end here. Keep an eye out for the famous resident ravens and marvel at the even more famous Crown Jewels.

$200 Hotel Credit: Basic Card Members on U.S. Consumer Platinum Card Account are eligible to receive up to $200 in statement credits per calendar year when they or Additional Platinum Card Members use their Cards to pay for eligible prepaid Fine Hotels + Resorts® and The Hotel Collection bookings made through American Express Travel (meaning through amextravel.com, the Amex® App, or by calling the phone number on the back of your eligible Card) or when Companion Platinum Card Members on such Platinum Card Accounts pay for eligible prepaid bookings for The Hotel Collection made through American Express Travel (meaning through amextravel.com, the Amex® App, or by calling the phone number on the back of your eligible Card). Please note, access to the benefit may take up to 24 hours to take effect on your Card after Account opening. Purchases by both the Basic Card Member and any Additional Card Members on the Card Account are eligible for statement credits. However, the total amount of statement credits for eligible purchases will not exceed $200 per calendar year, per Card Account. Fine Hotels + Resorts® program bookings may be made only by eligible U.S. Consumer Basic Platinum and Additional Platinum Card Members. The Hotel Collection bookings may be made by eligible U.S. Consumer Basic and Additional Platinum Card Members and Companion Platinum Card Members on the Platinum Card Account. Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Card Members are not eligible for the benefit. To receive the statement credits, an eligible Card Member must make a new booking using their eligible Card through American Express Travel on or after July 1st, 2021, that is prepaid (referred to as "Pay Now" on amextravel.com and the Amex App), for a qualifying stay at an available, participating Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection property. Bookings of The Hotel Collection require a minimum stay of two consecutive nights. Eligible bookings must be processed before December 31st, 11:59PM Central Time, each calendar year to be eligible for statement credits within that year. Eligible bookings do not include interest charges, cancellation fees, property fees or other similar fees, or any charges by a property to you (whether for your booking, your stay or otherwise).

Statement credits are typically received within a few days, however it may take 90 days after an eligible prepaid hotel booking is charged to the Card Account. American Express relies on the merchant’s processing of transactions to determine the transaction date. The transaction date may differ from the date you made the purchase if, for example, there is a delay in the merchant submitting the transaction to us or if the merchant uses another date as the transaction date. This means that in some cases your purchase may not earn the statement credit benefit for the benefit period in which you made the purchase. For example, if an eligible purchase is made on December 31st but the merchant processes the transaction such that it is identified to us as occurring on January 1st, then the statement credit available in the next calendar year will be applied. Statement credits may not be received or may be reversed if the booking is cancelled or modified. If the Card Account is canceled or past due, it may not qualify to receive a statement credit. If American Express does not receive information that identifies your transaction as eligible, you will not receive the statement credits. For example, your transaction will not be eligible if it is a booking: (i) made with a property not included in the Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection programs, (ii) not made through American Express Travel, or (iii) not made with an eligible Card. Participating properties and their availability are subject to change. If American Express, in its sole discretion, determines that you have engaged in or intend to engage in any manner of abuse, misuse, or gaming in connection with this benefit, American Express will not have an obligation to provide and may reverse any statement credits provided to you. If a charge for an eligible purchase is included in a Pay Over Time balance on your Card Account, the statement credit associated with that charge may not be applied to that Pay Over Time balance. Instead, the statement credit may be applied to your Pay In Full balance. Please refer to  AmericanExpress.com/FHR  and  AmericanExpress.com/HC  for more information about Fine Hotels + Resorts and The Hotel Collection, respectively.

5X Membership Rewards ®  Points Platinum Card:  Basic Card Members will get 1 Membership Rewards ®  point for each dollar charged for eligible purchases on their Platinum Card ®  or an Additional Card on their Account and 4 additional points (for a total of 5 points) for each dollar charged for eligible travel purchases on any Card on the Account (“Additional Points”), minus cancellations and credits. Eligible travel purchases are limited to: (i) purchases of air tickets on scheduled flights, of up to $500,000 in charges per calendar year, booked directly with passenger airlines or through American Express Travel (by calling 1-800-525-3355 or through AmexTravel.com); (ii) purchases of prepaid hotel reservations booked through American Express Travel; and (iii) purchases of prepaid flight+hotel packages booked through AmexTravel.com. Eligible travel purchases do not include: charter flights, private jet flights, flights that are part of tours, cruises, or travel packages (other than prepaid flight+hotel packages booked through AmexTravel.com), ticketing or similar service fees, ticket cancellation or change fees, property fees or similar fees, hotel group reservations or events, interest charges, or purchases of cash equivalents. Eligible prepaid hotel bookings or prepaid flight+hotel bookings that are modified directly with the hotel will not be eligible for Additional Points.

Bonuses that may be received with your Card on other purchase categories or in connection with promotions or offers from American Express cannot be combined with this benefit. Any portion of a charge that the Basic Card Member elects to cover through redemption of Membership Rewards points is not eligible to receive points. Additional terms and restrictions apply.

Merchants are assigned codes based on what they primarily sell. We group certain merchant codes into categories that are eligible for Additional Points. A purchase with a merchant will not earn Additional Points if the merchant’s code is not included in an Additional Points category. Basic Card Members may not receive Additional Points if we receive inaccurate information or are otherwise unable to identify your purchase as eligible for an Additional Points category. For example, you may not receive Additional Points when: a merchant uses a third-party to sell their products or services, a merchant uses a third-party to process or submit your transaction to us (e.g., using mobile or wireless card readers), or you choose to make a purchase using a third-party payment account or make a purchase using a mobile or digital wallet.

To be eligible for this benefit, the Card Account must not be cancelled. If American Express, in its sole discretion, determines that you have engaged in or intend to engage in any manner of abuse, misuse, or gaming in connection with this benefit in any way American Express may remove access to this benefit from the Account. For additional information, call the number on the back of your Card or visit americanexpress.com/rewards-info for more information about rewards.

5X Membership Rewards Points for Business Platinum Card:  You will get one point for each dollar charged for an eligible purchase on your Business Platinum Card ®  from American Express. You will get 4 additional points (for a total of 5 points) for each dollar spent on eligible travel purchases. Eligible travel purchases include scheduled flights and prepaid flight+hotel packages made online at AmexTravel.com, minus returns and other credits. Additionally, eligible travel purchases include prepaid hotel purchases made through American Express Travel, over the phone with our Travel Consultants or made online at AmexTravel.com, minus returns and other credits. Eligible travel purchases do NOT include non-prepaid hotel bookings, scheduled flights and prepaid flight+hotel packages over the phone, vacation packages, car rentals, cruise, hotel group reservations or events, ticketing service, cancellation or other fees, interest charges, purchases of travelers checks, purchases or reloading of prepaid cards, or purchases of other cash equivalents. To be eligible for the 5x Membership Rewards ®  points, you must both reserve and charge the travel purchase with the same eligible Business Platinum Card ® . To modify a reservation you must cancel and rebook your reservation. You can cancel and rebook your reservation on AmexTravel.com or by calling a representative of AmexTravel.com at 1-800-297-2977. Cancellations are subject to hotel cancellation penalty policies. If hotel reservations are made or modified directly with the hotel provider, the reservation will not be eligible for this 5X Membership Rewards ®  point benefit. To be eligible to receive extra points, Card account(s) must not be cancelled or past due at the time of extra points fulfillment. If booking is cancelled, the extra points will be deducted from the Membership Rewards account. Extra points will be credited to the Membership Rewards account approximately 6-10 weeks after eligible purchases appear on the billing statement. Bonuses you may receive with your Card on other purchase categories or in connection with promotions or offers from American Express may not be combined with this benefit. The benefits associated with the Additional Card(s) you choose may be different than the benefits associated with your basic Card. To learn about the benefits associated with Additional Card(s) you choose, please call the number on the back of your Card.

Merchants are assigned codes based on what they primarily sell. We group certain merchant codes into categories that are eligible for additional points. A purchase with a merchant will not earn additional points if the merchant’s code is not included in an additional points category. You may not receive additional points if we receive inaccurate information or are otherwise unable to identify your purchase as eligible for an additional points category. For example, you may not receive additional points when: a merchant uses a third-party to sell their products or services; or a merchant uses a third-party to process or submit your transaction to us (e.g., using mobile or wireless card readers); or you choose to make a purchase using a third-party payment account or make a purchase using a mobile or digital wallet.

Please visit  americanexpress.com/rewards-info  for more information about rewards.

Pay with Points:  To use Pay with Points, you must charge your eligible purchase through American Express Travel to a Membership Rewards ®  program-enrolled American Express ®  Card. Eligible purchases through American Express Travel exclude non-prepaid car rentals and non-prepaid hotels. Points will be debited from your Membership Rewards account, and credit for corresponding dollar amount will be issued to the American Express Card account used. If points redeemed do not cover entire amount, the balance of purchase price will remain on the American Express Card account. Minimum redemption 5,000 points.

See  membershiprewards.com/terms  for the Membership Rewards program terms and conditions.

If a charge for a purchase is included in a Pay Over Time balance on your Linked Account the statement credit associated with that charge may not be applied to that Pay Over Time balance. Instead the statement credit may be applied to your Pay in Full balance. If you believe this has occurred, please contact us by calling the number on the back of your Card. Corporate Card Members are not eligible for Pay Over Time.

Terms and Conditions for the Membership Rewards ®  program apply. Visit  membershiprewards.com/terms  for more information. Participating partners and available rewards are subject to change without notice.

International Roaming Outage Affecting Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile Customers [Updated]

There appears to be an ongoing outage with international roaming across multiple cellular networks, with Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile customers abroad complaining about the issue on social networks and cellular community forums .

verizon

Based on feedback from customers that have managed to contact support, the providers are aware of the issue with international roaming and are actively working on resolving it, although there have been reports that this could take several hours. We'll update this article as soon as we learn more.

Does anyone else have @Verizon and overseas?? Everyone I’m with phone just fully stopped working… anyone else?? — Patrick Schwarzenegger (@PSchwarzenegger) June 27, 2024

Update 2: Bloomberg reports that a Verizon customer service representative who was contacted from the UK on Thursday said that it's an ongoing issue that engineers are working to address.

Update 3: The multi-network outage is related to issues at international connection partner Syniverse , according to a person familiar with the situation. The company says the estimated time of restoration is 12 hours up to 24 hours.

I'm always curious with issues like this, do people seriously think that a vendor is just going to sit around and not work on the problem? While their networks aren't as robust as they like us to think, they are going to resolve these issues if nothing else to avoid government hassling them for causing an outage.

This screwed me so bad yesterday in Mexico City. Carrier left us out to dry. I’m leaving Verizon over this. What I went through yesterday when this randomly happened in a random neighborhood of CDMX I will never forgive this company for.

After wrapping up her conversation, Swift stepped into frame in a pink dress and heels, reaching for her partner’s hand as they walked down a ramp.

“THEY ARE DRESSED NICE WHERE ARE THEY GOING?!” one X user asked.

Another gushed , “going on a date after a 3+ hour show?! and they say love is dead.”

Taylor Swift

Swift, also 34, kicked off her England performances on Friday and rolled right into another show on Saturday.

Kelce was spotted at Wembley Stadium for all three concerts, even making a surprise onstage appearance for the final show.

He joined two of her backup dancers during the “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart” transition, fanning himself during the songwriter’s subsequent wardrobe change.

Swift will have a few days off before hitting the stage in Dublin next week.

Kelce, who is in his NFL offseason, last attended one of his girlfriend’s shows in Paris in May, making headlines for dancing with Bradley Cooper and Gigi Hadid .

The athlete remained abroad for a Lake Como getaway with Swift.

The couple stayed in a luxurious private villa , which cost $21,000 per night, and he filmed his and brother Jason Kelce’s “New Heights” podcast from somewhere “in Europe.”

The tight end gushed about Swift’s “unbelievable” skills while urging listeners to catch her upcoming tour stops.

“It has her new ‘Tortured Poets Department,’ a handful of those songs in the new show, which means  there’s a new segment , new lights, new dancing and everything,” Travis said at the time. “I enjoyed every bit of it.”

The three-time Super Bowl winner hadn’t met Swift when he first attended an Eras Tour show in Missouri in July 2023 — although he did try to give her his phone number on a friendship bracelet.

While he was “disappointed” Swift didn’t talk to him at the time, news broke two months later that the duo were dating .

When the “Catching Kelce” alum next attended one of her shows in Buenos Aires in November 2023, the couple were caught on camera embracing and kissing .

He has since watched Swift perform in Singapore and Sydney, showing PDA both times.
