Saga Holidays and Titan Travel to be combined

The operations of Saga Holidays and Titan Travel are to be combined.

The group said it was restructuring its tour operations “to deliver growth and create lower-cost, more agile, customer-focused business, ready for resumption of international travel”.

The over-50s specialist disclosed last week that it will be working with “a smaller” number of agents to enable it to “build stronger relationships” with those partners.  Titan later said the trade is “part of our recovery” .

In a trading update today, Saga said: “Our tour operations business – comprising Saga Holidays and Titan Travel – like the rest of the market, has been significantly impacted by Covid-19.

“We are completing the restructuring of our tour operations business to position ourselves for growth and create a lower-cost, more agile and dynamic operation which is focused on the changing needs of our customers.

“We are combining the operations of Saga Holidays and Titan Travel. This will maximise efficiency in touring, where the product offerings are highly complementary, and we will create a new hotel stay proposition to be launched later in 2022.”

Saga has previously been reported to be seeking the sale of Titan Travel, both in January 2020 and March 2019 .

Management of the over-50s company’s river cruise operation is also being moved to ocean cruise.

“These actions place us in a strong position as travel restrictions ease and pent-up customer demand builds,” Saga said.

“By initiating these changes, we expect to incur ‘below the line’ restructuring costs in the range of £10-15 million in the year ended 31 January 2022, with around two-thirds of this amount relating to impairments of IT assets which are non-cash in nature.”

Saga’s cruise arm is on course to report pre-tax losses of up to £50 million as its travel businesses continued to be affected by the pandemic.

However, company said cruise generated positive earnings [ebitda] in the second half of 2021, with a “strong” load factor of 68%.

Issuing the trading update for the period from August 1, 2021 to January 26 this year, Saga said the underlying loss before tax for its cruise division is expected to be £45-£50 million after ship depreciation and financing costs.

The company reported strong 2022-23 cruise bookings, with a load factor of 86% for the first half and 73% for the full year.

Saga said: “Given underlying disruption and restrictions in travel through the second half, the group is expected to make a small underlying loss before tax for 2021-22.

“Although mindful of potential for continued uncertainty, we expect to return to profit in 2022-23.”

A full strategic update will be included with Saga’s preliminary results announcement on March 23.

Group chief executive Euan Sutherland said: “Saga has delivered a successful second half of the financial year with our Insurance business remaining in growth and delivering positive momentum across all key metrics, while our cruise ships resumed their international itineraries.

“With a stronger Insurance business and progress being made in transforming our travel business, our turnaround strategy is working well.

“While Omicron has impacted travel bookings through December and January, our outlook for cruise in 2022-23 and beyond is positive.

“We approach the future with confidence, having demonstrated our ability to manage our way through recent challenges.

“We remain confident that the strength of our brand, our management team and our strengthened financial position will now allow us to return the business to sustainable growth, creating long-term value for our stakeholders.”

Small ship cruise round the Croatian Islands

The Dalmatia was a special, very individual, beautifully kept small ship. All the staff were welcoming and friendly when we arrived and attended to all our needs without being asked throughout our trip. Excellent food, all meals well balanced and tasty, well cooked by Vladimir and Filipe in the kit hen. Our barman also Filipe, quickly learnt our alcoholic preferences and always served us with a laugh and a smile. Luca and his sidekick attended to our other needs, whilst Captain Dado took us to some amazing places and instilled confidence and a good spirit to both crew and guests. Our guide Danka was polite but firm in a way which meant we all responded to his requests! A great, well organised holiday.

Canada and Alaska trip.

Canada and Alaska trip. We had a great time in Canada and Alaska, fantastic scenery, beautiful glaciers, and lots of wildlife and whales spotted. We had an amazing tour guide-John Allen-very knowledgeable of the surrounding areas and the wildlife, always very helpful and organised everything to perfection. John Allen 10/10

Canada and Alaska trip

We had a great trip to Canada and Alaska.The highlight was definitely the Rockie mountaineer train(fabulous-go for Gold it’s worth every penny). We weren’t so keen on the ship because it was huge and catered for all ages which we didn’t expect with a Saga holiday.We had an amazing guide- John Allen- who made the trip so interesting and organised everything to perfection.

Croatian Island Explorer on MV Dalmatia

It was with some trepidation that I embarked on MV Dalmatia and a Croatian Island cruise. I need not have worried, it was fabulous! Danko our Saga rep met us in Zagreb and immediately I felt that I was in safe hands. He delivered facts about the country and information about our trip with brilliant English and a great sense of humour. Our ship was equipped with everything we needed and was kept spotlessly clean thanks to the hard work of the crew Ivan and Luca. My thirst was sated and drinks served by Filip who always greeted me with courtesy and humour. The chefs , Filip and Vladimir conjured up tasty well balanced meals from a tiny galley. We enjoyed fascinating tours of the islands we visited, lead by knowledgeable friendly tour guides. A disappointment was a change of itinerary which meant that we missed a day at sea and had two nights on the island of Krk. Other than this I can happily recommend the holiday to anybody who fancies visiting the north islands of Croatia in a comfortable relaxing way. Thanks Saga and Captain Dado, you have a great team.

A superb way to holiday - everything is taken care of leaving you free to enjoy yourself.

Everything went smoothly from the 4am pick-up to chauffeur us to Heathrow right through to the return drop-off at home (including a thoughtful stop to allow us to buy some food supplies). The hotel was excellent with good food and very friendly staff; the excursions were brilliant and our tour guide Michele was fantastic: nothing was too much trouble and she went the extra mile on a daily basis.

Alaska, Yukon and The Klondike

We went on the Alaska, Yukon and The Klondike experience from May 23 - June 6th and it was a fabulous holiday. Everything was organised well, including our flights and hotels and pick ups from the hotel. The ship Koningsdam was a lovely ship, and from then on we went from Skagway to Anchorage on various forms of transport. Our agent Martin Johnson was great, nothing was too much trouble for him. All the hotels we stayed in were of a high standard and the little towns and the cities we stayed in were amazing. Will definitely recommend this experience!

Check that your pickup is booked my experience was very stressful it never turned up had to ring emergency number it was not booked in it was 2 hours late

Abysmal ServiceReceived my Building Insurance renewal…

Received my Building Insurance renewal from them and it had increased by 125%. There had been no claims made in year. I tried ringing them several times to negotiate a reduction. Unable to get through and message of call waiting time over 15 minutes. Tried their complaints number and same recorded message so completed online complaint form. Have just received a very lengthy response from them which I will summarise. Saga considers 15 minutes call waiting time as acceptable and their underwriters set prices. Needless to say they lost a customer as I got a similar policy much cheaper elsewhere.

Do not book with this company

Do not book with this company. I rang with a query three weeks ago. I had to ring four times and each time I waited for well over half an hour. The fourth time I did get a customer service assistant who told me she would look into my query and get back to me within a week and here I am three weeks later and still no answer. I tried ringing this morning and in the end just gave in. I am trying again and have now waited for one of their assistants to answer the phone for over half an hour again. If all their staff are the same it makes me wonder how bad their staff and their holidays are. They obviously treat their customers with complete derision.

Fantastic service, price and experience

From start to finish, the service with Saga has been fantastic! We booked our holiday through an independent advisor who then moved on and we were then handed over smoothly to another. Appalling service

Appalling service. I am supposed to be going on a Rhine cruise from Heathrow tomorrow and I received a call at midday to say that the cruise has been diverted but that they would get me on a flight from Heathrow. Heard nothing further and despite phoning several times and being promised a call back which didn’t happen,I finally got through at five thirty to be told I would have to go to Stanstead at seven the next morning which is very stressful for me and difficult to rearrange at such short notice as I am waiting on someone to arrive from Germany before I leave. I explained the problem, but it seems they can put other people on the Heathrow plane but not a special request having promised they would do so. They now tell me I won’t be travelling in the same car as my travelling companion. What sort of shambles is this. I would not recommend Saga to anyone.
