Hello, there is a boat from SR to Battambang and viceverea. For some reason, I couldn’t find it online. I had to book through my hotel on SR. I spent 30$ and it included the pickup from the hotel. The arrival in Battambang is 5/6 km out of the center, but you should find someone who takes you. Hope this helps. Daniele

How long did the boat trip take? Thanks.

Hello, any news about the boat between Siem Reap and Battambang? Thanks! Enrique

Hey, Love your article! We thinking about traveling by boat to Battambang:) but we just don’t know where to get the tickets ?

You can try calling one of the numbers on the sign in the photo, but I think they’re probably closed due to lack of tourists. I know the Phnom Penh to Siem Reap boat is closed.

Great info to find, please sign me up for the newsletter!

Hello. On a Mekong Express van that has 25 seats.. a middle row with two seats on each side.. is there a “best seat” for someone with long legs? Thanks.

We’ve just done it…Was sat directly behind driver …maybe slightly more leg room if you are on outside seat …air con was shocking either blowing hot air or freezing !

Hi Lina and everyone,

Really happy to have found this website with so many useful information!

I’m trying to decide if yes or no we’re gonna try a boat trip. I read so many different things! It’s not safe, it’s not worth it, then it’s beautiful, a must do… Battambang to SR is better than SR to Battambang, and the previous two are better that SR to PP or the other way around…

Sooo! Knowing that we’re used to rough backpacking, does someone can advice us on those trip? :)

Thx for your time and experience!

Claire and Ronald

Getting from Siem Reap to Battambang

The distance between Siem Reap and Battambang is around 165 km . We researched several transport options that you can take from Siem Reap to Battambang or reverse. First, we have a bus. It is definitely the most convenient option, as it is cheap ( around 8 USD for a one-way ticket ), and the journey takes between 3 to 4 hours.

Then, we have the taxi. Well, it is certainly a more comfortable and faster experience than the bus and it is ideal if you are traveling in a group. Expect to pay around 50 USD for a one-way trip and to travel around two to two and a half hours.

If you opt for a more unique journey from Siem Reap to Battambang or reverse, don't hesitate to book a ferry! The ferry will provide a unique experience, as you will discover another side to the local lifestyle of Cambodia.

Just keep in mind that the ferry ride won't be really comfortable and that it will take a while. The ferry trip takes between six to eight hours and costs 25 USD . Well, without further ado, let's dive into the different possibilities of getting from Siem Reap to Cambodia (or reverse).

Buses from Siem Reap to Battambang (or reverse)

Mekong Express bus.

Their journey time is around 4 hours , with toilet and snack break included. For more information on regular buses operating from Siem Reap to Battambang, check local bus stations or with your accommodation for tickets and timetables.

VIP buses (or minibusses) are quicker than regular buses as they don't stop that often. If you really need a toilet break, you can ask the driver to stop and take a short break. Their price is from 6 USD to 8 USD. Also, VIP buses are 18-seated or 25-seated.

If you take a bus, it is a bit longer journey, as all buses will pass via Sisophon, so that makes the journey distance of 211 km. Let's go into more detail about your options when it comes to buses and minibusses on this relation!

Regular Bus Take care, as there are quite a few shady bus companies that ride on this route. We highly recommend you to book Mekong Express or Capitol Tours if you opt for a bus journey.

Let's talk a bit about Capitol Tours, as we will detail Mekong Express in the Minibus section. Yes, they have regular and VIP buses! Capitol Tours, with its 42-seater buses, has quite a positive reputation in the public transport market. The journey with this company will take around three hours, and the ticket price is 5,50 USD .

One big disadvantage with Capitol Tours is that you cannot book their tickets online, so you will need to go directly to their office to book the tickets. Check out the links below if you are interested in the location of the offices, both in Siem Reap and Battambang. The location of the Capitol Tours office in Siem Reap The location of the Capitol Tours office in Battambang

Also, their offices aren't exactly near the bus terminals, but thankfully, Capitol Tours has you covered with their free minibus service to the terminals! Last but not least, here is the schedule of the Capitol Tours buses:

Minibus If you want to take a minibus on this relation, then Mekong Express is your go-to company! They are a favorite among travelers as they have a very reliable safety record. Mekong Express runs two buses every day in both directions at 8 AM and 2 PM. They have 18-seated buses and 25 seated buses.

25-seated buses depart at 8 AM from Siem Reap and at 2 PM from Battambang while 18-seated buses depart at all other times (check the Mekong Express bus schedule below to get a better understanding of this).

The Mekong Express buses depart in the Siem Reap center, just beside the KFC near the hospital. Their buses arrive in the center of Battambang, near the Psar Nat supermarket. Foreigners can expect to pay around 7 USD for a one-way ticket on this relation. Also, you can book Mekong Express tickets online here!

With Mekong Express, you get a great balance of price and speed, as the trip takes any time between three to four hours . Currently, the roads are pretty rough, especially on the second half of the route to Battambang, as there are roadworks about. For the end, here is the schedule of the Mekong Express buses:

Taxi from Siem Reap to Battambang (or reverse)

Taxi from Siem Reap to Battambang.

On the road, you can stop for a toilet or coffee break, and even go sightseeing if you agree with your driver. The journey on this relation with taxi costs around 50 USD . Make sure to agree on the price and on the location where you want to be dropped off before the ride itself! Where can you hire a taxi for this relation?

First of all, you can check around your accommodation, or ask a travel agent. The most convenient way is to book a taxi online via BookMeBus , or Camboticket . When you book via BookMeBus, you can book a van which is the most comfortable taxi ride you can get on this relation. It costs 90 USD , and you will essentially get into a van with 11 seats.

If you book online via Camboticket, you can hire a taxi for 55 USD , which is also a bit more comfortable than your usual Toyota Camry taxi. The taxi ride from Siem Reap to Battambang (or reverse) will take around two to two and a half hours , depending on the road conditions, weather conditions, traffic, and how many breaks you take. One thing is certain - you can expect a very comfortable ride!

Boat from Siem Reap to Battambang (or reverse)

Ferry from Siem Reap.

You see, during the dry season (between April and June), the water levels in Tonle Sap lake are too low for a ferry ride. The best time to take a boat ride on this relation is during the wet season (from July to March), as the water levels in Tonle Sap will be enough for a boat ride. Why should you take a ferry from Siem Reap to Battambang?

Well, for starters, this is a nice way of getting to Battambang or reverse if you really want to get a feel of local culture. You will sail on Tonle Sap, which means through many floating fishing villages. This could result in a very distinct experience in this region. Keep in mind that the boats aren't the safest transportation option!

All the ferries that take this route are local-made, wooden boats, that aren't the most comfortable. It tends to be quite hot and you can hear the engine of the boat at all times. If you can sit through all that, you will be rewarded with an off the beaten track route without tourist crowds. We can't stress this enough, but if you want to avoid getting sunburned, make sure to bring sunscreen!

With that, you should take some rain protection gear, as it tends to rain often in this part of Cambodia. You can buy raincoats for 2,000 Cambodian Riel (around 0,50 USD) at almost any small streetside shop. The boat tickets cost 25 USD in either direction for one person. You can book tickets on the same day of the journey at the port. At some rare occasions, you can book a ferry ticket online here.

The ferry from Siem Reap departs from Phnom Krom Port. To get there, hop on a tik-tuk for around 5 USD that can take you directly to Phnom Krom! What to say else other than to enjoy the ferry ride on the majestic Tonle Sap!

Siem Reap to Battambang with Motorbike

Last but not least, we want to share with you our experience of the route from Siem Reap to Battambang, which we conquered with motorbikes. To be more specific, 3 Yamaha automatic bikes, and one Honda Wave - with tons of luggage on every bike.

The journey took us 5 hours , with lots of breaks in between, changing from early afternoon, to the darkness of the night.

Siem Reap to Battambang Motorbike Route

There is a 104 km distance from Siem Reap to Sisophon and 69 km distance from Sisophon to Battambang. The beginning section of Route 6 after leaving Siem Reap is full of potholes, and loads of trucks and cars that force you to hug the far right side of the road.

travel siem reap to battambang

After fixing the exhaust on the Honda Wave, we blazed through the villages to Sisophon. Then, we hit the harrowing Route 5 to Battambang, unaware of the road works that awaited us further down the road.

This road was crazy at the time of the ride. Unpaved? Check. Road holes? Check. Massively aggressive truck drivers? Check. Everything was down on the board, and we continued through this chaos. We had a lot of near-misses with the trucks, as the driveable unpaved section of the road was very narrow for both bikes and trucks together on one lane.

The Route 5 in all its dusty glory.

After devouring a few Kralan portions, the nighttime came with its challenges. During the nighttime, the visibility falters, as it is really rare to see light other than our bike headlights and an occasional truck driver.

After riding for a while, we finally got to Battambang. It was an exhilarating and challenging ride to be certain! We love rewarding rides like these!

Now that you know how to get from Siem Reap to Battambang (or reverse), we invite you to explore these two amazing locales. Of course, Siem Reap is world-famous for the Angkor Wat temple complex, but there is a certain charm to the city itself. And not to forget, the ride to Tonle Sap lake is absolutely breathtaking, and you definitely shouldn't miss that! Battambang is a more tranquil place than Siem Reap and a very vibey city.

Here is a day trip from Battambang that you shouldn't miss while being there! We wish you a happy journey and hope you found all the required information in this post! If you have any questions or want to add something to this post, don't hesitate to contribute to the comment section! :)

Minivans from Siem Reap to Battambang

It’s 165 kilometers (102 miles) by road from Siem Reap to Battambang and taking a minivan from Siem Reap to Battambang is one of the easiest ways to go from Siem Reap to Battambang.

There are 2 minivan companies that go to Battambang from Siem Reap, and you will need to get to their offices to take the minivan.  Between the two companies, there are up to 8 minivans a day that go on this route.

Check the times of the minivans from Siem Reap to Battambang here.

We took the Virak Buntham minivan to Battambang from Siem Reap.  We took a remorque (read about them in our guide to Cambodian Transport here ), from our fabulous hotel, the Reservoir Golden Boutique Hotel , and arrived about 20 minutes before the van was due to leave.

Pool at the Golden Boutiqu Hotel Siem Reap

The seats are comfortable, the A/C was great and the driving was safe and the staff was helpful.  We also used Virak Buntham when we traveled up to Sen Monorom for the Mondulkiri Jungle Trek and we’d used them for part of our journey from Koh Chang to Sihanoukville too.

On arrival in Battambang, you’ll be dropped at the offices of whichever bus or van company you booked with.  The tuk-tuk drivers in Battambang will offer you either a free transfer to your hotel or hostel or a very, very cheap ride.  This is to get the chance to do a deal with you to take you on a tour of the surrounding countryside the next day.  It’s a good deal.  Unless you plan to rent a motorbike to see Battambang or have pre-booked a tour of Battambang , it’s a good way to find yourself a tuk-tuk or remorque driver to show you the area.

Bus from Siem Reap to Battambang

If you prefer a big bus to a minivan, then you’ll want to check the times of the online booking.  While minivans to Battambang usually have 16 seats, larger buses have about 26 seats.  It takes the same amount of time to travel by bus from Siem Reap to Battambang as it does by using minivans.  This is because all the options start and finish at the same offices.

Taking a private taxi to Battambang from Siem Reap is the fastest way to go to Battambang, as you’ll get transported from your hotel in Siem Reap to your hotel in Battambang and not have to faff around getting to the bus company offices.  If there are four or more of you, this is likely a really good deal.  It is the most comfortable way to travel.  You can check prices for Siem Reap to Battambang taxis here.

Boat Trip from Siem Reap to Battambang

The first thing to be aware of is that the boat from Siem Reap to Battambang is only a viable option during the wet season in Cambodia.  This way of going to Battambang along the Sangkor River uses a traditional wooden boat and travels from the pier in Siem Reap (but also includes a transfer from your hotel) and it will drop you at the Khmer Prahok Market near the city center in Battambang.

Getting to Battambang by boat takes from 6 to 8 hours, depending on the season and the water levels and it’s a great way of combining sightseeing and getting from A to B!  Want to see more about this route?

How to get from Siem Reap to Battambang

How to get from Siem Reap to Battambang

What You’ll Find in this Blog

Siem Reap and Battambang, which are two of the most stunning spots that Northwestern Cambodia has to offer, are well worth visiting. The distance from Siem Reap to Battambang is only 48 miles (77 km). Due to the fact that there is no direct road–all of the buses route through Sisophon–and up to ten hours by boat, the trip can take as long as four hours. Here we cover how to travel between Siem Reap and Battambang (and vice-versa), including bus, taxi and boat. Tours of Indochina

Boat between Battambang and Siem

There are daily boats between Battambang and Siem Reap leaving at 7 a.m. in both directions. Depending on which direction you are going, the season and how high the water level is, the trip takes from eight to ten hours, the trip from Battambang to Siem Reap takes less time than the other ways around. The views are splendid, passing by many small yet lovely fishing villages, letting you get a sense of life on Cambodia’s riverside. Cambodia travel tours

Wet season is the best time to take boat

If you are considering traveling by boat, know that due to higher water levels, the wet season is the best time to take it. However, be aware to bring both sunblock and some sorts of rain protection (at any small shops, you can get cheap ponchos for 2,000 riel). Also be sure that the boats do not own any sort of safety standards and would not pass any safety tests back home. Even thought the boats can seat up to 14 people, onto the boat, they will pack as many as 20, together with luggage. Tickets range from $20 to $22 per traveler and for around $180, it is possible to take the entire boat for private trips.

Mekong Express

After a hiatus, there are again mini-bus shuttles running from Siem Reap to Battambang and vice versa. Mekong Express is the brand now running two daily buses in both directions. The 2 p.m. bus from Battambang and the 8 a.m. bus from Siem Reap are larger and seat 25 passengers, the other buses can seat 18 passengers. As having a good safety record and being relatively reliable, Mekong Express is a long-time tourist favorite. All nationalities pay $6 each way for the journey as they have also come to their senses and are not doing dual-priced tickets. It is possible to book tickets online at BookMeBus where you can reserve a seat in advance, at the Mekong Express ticket offices or through travel agents. The trip will take you about three hours.

Bus

There are some full-size bus companies flying this route, which all of the crappy local variety. Although bus tickets cost from $4.50 to $5, there can be as much as 100% markup at local guesthouses and travel agents, especially on the Siem Reap side. It is quite easy to save a couple of bucks by going directly to the bus company ticket office and purchasing your ticket yourself.

Capitol Tours, which sell tickets at quite reasonably priced at 18,000 riel ($4.50) for both locals and foreigners, is the best of the bunch. In spite of being aging, their fleet of 42-seat buses bedecked with colorful curtains is still in decent condition. For the duration of the journey, you will be treated to Khmer karaoke videos, a great insight into unique local culture. Tending to leave 15 minutes late, the trip may take between 3 and 3.5 hours.

VIP Bus

Free mini-bus pickup is included in the price of your ticket. As the bus depots in both Battambang and Siem Reap are not especially central, you can go to the Capitol offices in both towns and have them transport you to the station.

For buses arriving in Battambang, you can take a tuk tuk or another bus waiting saying Pick up Bus on the side that will take you into town from the station. From the Battambang bus station, you can also get a tuk tuk, whose drivers offer a discounted rate of $1 for foreigners. However, they will push for the real rate of $2 or $ if they know that you are not planning on doing any day tours.

Taxi

It costs $35 or $40 to go by private taxi between Siem Reap and Battambang. Like with most taxis in Cambodia, the Toyota Camry which can fit four passengers is the preferred vehicle, but travel light if you have more than three people as it can be a tight squeeze and the trunk is rarely empty. It is possible to hire a taxi through any travel agent or local guesthouse for $40, but the trip will cost $35 if you go directly. The trip takes 2 or 2.5 hours.

There are some suggestions for your tour to Siem Reap and Battambang including everything such as accommodation, transportation, sight seeing fees, etc. Let’s have a look at Cambodia highlights 11 days , or Cambodia Discovery 8 days .

Battambang is a wonderful relaxed town with a interesting range of Khmer, Thai and French architecture and a wide river flowing through the centre. The central square of the town features a large market ( Pasar Nat ) constructed during the French Colonial era, around which are located many of the town’s best hotels and restaurants. At the southern end of the square is cluster of French style buildings, many of which now house boutique style cafes and restaurants selling European inspired drinks and foods.

For the quality of the accommodation and the food, Battambang represents excellent value for money and the city has attracted a significant number of long stay foreign visitors. Battambang’s location on the main road and rail routes between the Thai border at Poipet and the Phnom Phnom also make it a great place to stay for a stay to break up the journey to and from Thailand.

Sangke Pagoda in Battambang

Battambang itself has a small range of tourist attractions. Wandering around the city centre and looking at the French and Thai style architecture is interesting. The former Governor’s Residence to the south of the main square is well visiting. This building, which dates back to the period when Battambang was under Thai rule, contains some interesting museum style displays. Also worth visiting is Wat Sangker on the other side of the river. Wat Sangker is a modern Buddhist temple built around the Khmer era Sangke Pagoda the features lots of Khmer style embellishments.

The main tourists attractions in the area, however, are located outside the town. The foremost of these is Wat Ek Phnom, which is a large Angkor period temple located just over 9 km to the north of Battambang. Phnom Sampeau (Sampeau hill), located 15 km to the south west of Battambang, is also interesting. Phnom Sampeau is one of the sites used by the Khmer Rouge for the brutal mass murder of a significant proportion of the local population. Phnom Sampeau has a number of caves. In some the bones of the victims of the Khmer Rouge are on display, in others are statues and carvings of the Lord Buddha, and the three highest caves are full of bats which fly out of the caves in massive numbers every day at sunset.

If you're interested in seeing Battambang yourself, we've created a helpful list to guide you as you wander around this utterly fascinating province.

Things to do in Battambang

A wooden train that passes through a rough rail from O Dambong going to O Sra Lav, this ride is a truly bumpy yet fun experience. Interested to dive in the country's history? Dedicate a day for an important trip to Phnom Sampeau, home to one of the most horrifying locations during the Khmer Rouge -- the Killing Caves. Pay respects to the victims of the terrifying regime, and understand it better by talking with the locals. For a more lighthearted activity, you can hike up the hill and witness a breathtaking view from the top. A complex of temples can also be visited in the area. Got the whole day to spare? Stay behind and watch in the afternoon as bats pour out from the cave and out into the jungle. Are you into the arts? A Complete Battambang Itinerary – Everything You Need to Know About Visiting

Battambang itinerary

Battambang is a special place – somewhere I can’t even put into words.  Have you ever traveled somewhere and just felt pulled to a place?  Whether it’s the people, the atmosphere, the activities; you just feel connected.  That’s how I felt in Battambang.  Connected.  And I know that writing this and sharing this, not everyone will have the same perspective and experience that I did… (Battambang was my boyfriends least favorite stop in Cambodia).  But there was just something about the city that made me fall in love.  So if you’re traveling to Cambodia, I urge you to make a stop in this quirky town.  This is your complete Battambang itinerary; everything you need to know about visiting.

If you’re planning on visiting Cambodia, don’t miss:

  • Everything You Need to Know About Planning a Trip to Cambodia
  • The Ultimate Cambodia Packing List

Where is Battambang?

Located in Northeastern Cambodia near the Thai border, Battambang is northwest of Phnom Penh and west of Siem Reap.  It’s the capital of the Battambang Province and is the third largest city in Cambodia (behind Phnom Penh and Siem Reap).

Is Battambang Worth Visiting?

I would wholeheartedly say that yes – Battambang is worth a visit.  It’s such a different feeling than the other large cities in Cambodia and the west has a different vibe than the south, etc.  That reason alone is enough for me to say that Battambang should be on your Cambodian travel list.  But Battambang is also famous for rice fields (it’s the largest rice producer in Cambodia), ancient temples, and a laidback atmosphere.  I truly felt like Battambang was unique and unlike anywhere I’ve been in Cambodia or in Southeast Asia.

How Many Days Should You Spend in Battambang?

Battambang can be seen in as little as one day, but I personally felt like half of the charm was also exploring outside of the city.  For that reason, I’d recommend two full days in Battambang.  One to hang around the city and one to explore the outskirts.

Of course, if you’re limited on time and only have one day to spend, I’d still recommend making your way to Battambang.

How to Get to Battambang

Getting to Battambang is pretty easy no matter where you’re coming from in Cambodia.  The main mode of transportation in Cambodia is bus, and you can easily buy bus tickets and search for routes using Bookaway or 12Go .  The most popular ways to travel to Battambang are from Siem Reap and Phnom Penh.  I traveled to Battambang from Kampot, and it despite needing to change buses, it was a smooth ride.  I had to buy a bus ticket from Kampot to Phnom Penh and then a separate bus ticket from Phnom Penh to Battambang.

Siem Reap to Battambang

If you’re traveling from Siem Reap to Battambang the cheapest way is by bus which will take you around three hours.  However, if you’d like a more leisurely way of getting to Battambang, you can take a ferry through Tonle Sap Lake which will take about six hours.  The ferry goes through floating villages and is quite peaceful.  It is more expensive but it’s a more scenic way to head west.

Lastly, your easiest option would be to book a private driver from Siem Reap to Battambang.  You can book that here and a driver will pick you up at your hotel in Siem Reap and drop you off at your hotel in Battambang.

Phnom Penh to Battambang

If you’re traveling from Phnom Penh to Battambang, the cheapest way to travel is by bus .  The ride will take around five hours and you can expect to be given a break to use the bathroom and grab food if you’re hungry.  An alternative way to get to Battambang is to book a private driver.  You can do that here and a driver will pick you up at your hotel in Phnom Penh and drop you off at your hotel in Battambang – surely the easiest way to travel north.

Where to stay in battambang.

Battambang is quite small and easily walkable.  No matter where you stay, you can easily get around on foot or by waving down a TukTuk driver.  It does seem that most of the best bars and restaurants are near the Sangker River, in the north of the city; so if you’re looking for a place to stay make sure that you’re north, near the river.

My top two recommendations for Battambang include…

  • Delux Villa Hotel – I stayed here and the room was very big and comfortable, there was also a pool to enjoy, and the hotel was affordable.
  • Bambu Battambang Hotel – This is another great option in Battambang with both a pool to enjoy and an open air bar.  I met tons of travelers who stayed here and had great things to say about the hotel!

How to Get Around Battambang

The charm of Battambang is that there’s a lot of interesting things to see and do outside of the city.  So while Battambang itself is quite walkable, you’ll definitely need transportation to get a good feel for the province.

The most flexible way to get around Battambang Province is to rent a motorbike and plan a self-guided tour.  Motorbikes in Battambang cost about $8 for the day (although prices are negotiable) and a well-known rental spot is The Real Place.

If you don’t feel comfortable renting a motorbike and driving yourself around, another option would be to get a TukTuk.  The best way to do this is to just waive one down; just make sure to negotiate a price before you get in.  The frustrating thing about Battambang was that tuktuk’s were much more expensive than elsewhere in Cambodia.  Generally, you can expect to pay about $1 for a 10-minute ride but in Battambang drivers were charging upwards of $3 for 10-minutes.  Word is that for the entire day they charge $35; while in Phnom Penh I only paid $25 for a driver.  (You can book this TukTuk tour of Battambang for $20).

Lastly, Battambang does not have Grab so you can’t rely on it for more affordable or reliable transportation.  They do utilize the Pass app but you must have a Cambodian number to use the app.

The Best Restaurants in Battambang

I was impressed with the food scene in Battambang for several reasons.  Not only do they have great local restaurants (and great cooking classes where you can learn to make local food!), but they also have great healthy cafes and international food.  (I was especially impressed with all of the healthy cafes).  Below are my favorite restaurants in Battambang.

FLAVORS OF INDIA

If you’re craving international cuisine, look no further than Flavors of India.  Not only is the food amazing, but the portions are huge and affordable.  You’ll definitely have a full stomach when you dine here.

If you only have time for one restaurant in Battambang – Jaan Bai should be it.  Not only was it my favorite restaurant in Battambang, but it might have even been my favorite restaurant in Cambodia as a whole.  The cuisine is local Cambodian cuisine and the restaurant does a lot of work with children in need throughout the province.

THE CAFF BY BATTAMBANG FINE FOODS

The Caff is a great spot for your morning coffee and breakfast.  I was seriously impressed with the food here (the banana crumble cake was out of this world) and I have to admit – I also enjoyed the pumpkin spice latte (a seasonal drink) more than once.  The Caff was opened by a mom and daughter who moved from England to Cambodia to work as missionaries.

This cute and quirky cafe is a great option if you’re craving healthy, delicious food.  I always find that when I travel through Southeast Asia I’m missing some of those healthier food options and even get the craving for a good salad from time to time.  The Fringe satisfied my need for a healthy meal (don’t skip out on the peanut butter chocolate balls for dessert) at an affordable price.  Plus the cafe has games that you can play so it’s also a great place to come with a friend for drinks and games.  Lastly, The Fringe offers yoga classes (Tuesdays-Saturdays) if you’re in need of a good stretch and sweat!  You can check updated times for yoga and any other happenings at The Fringe on their Facebook page here .

The best things to do in battambang.

travel siem reap to battambang

There are so many great ways to spend your days and nights in Battambang.  Below you’ll find a list of unique things to see and do in Battambang that I would personally recommend.  You’ll notice that I do not have the killing cave or bat cave here – that’s because on my way to visit I crashed my motorbike and had to go back to the city.  I would however, highly recommend to do these things as I have heard from many tourists that it was the highlight of their stay.

IF YOU WANT TO BOOK A FULL TOUR OF BATTAMBANG WITH A TUKTUK DRIVER – BOOK HERE

Bambootrain battambang.

I’ve heard a lot of conflicting thoughts about whether or not the bamboo train is “overrated” and a “rip off”, but I personally loved it!  When you arrive to the railway there are men there that build the bamboo train in front of you.  $5 will get you a 20-minute ride on the railroad tracks – which is how Cambodian people used to travel back in the day.  Once you are done with your ride, they will ask for a tip so that’s up to your discretion.

Please note:  There is an old bamboo railway and a new bamboo railway.  You want to make sure to visit the old one as it’s much more authentic.

BANAN TEMPLE

The Banan Temple is an 11th-century temple located 10+ miles south of Battambang city.  The temple was built by King Odayadityavarman II as a way to give thanks, ask for help, and pray to God.  The entrance to the temple is $2/person and you have to climb 300+ steps to make it to the top.

BATTAMBANG CENTRAL MARKET

I highly recommend walking around the central market while you’re in town.  There’s tons of interesting foods here and the market itself is so – colorful.  It’s a great way to pass some time and get a feel for how Cambodian people eat and shop.  By the way, Cambodian people go to the market every single day for fresh food.  They don’t buy in bulk like people in the west do.

TAKE A COOKING CLASS AT COCONUT LYLY

A great way to learn about Cambodian cuisine and culture is by participating in a cooking class.  I joined the class at Coconut Lyly and thoroughly enjoyed it!  The class was 3+ hours and we visited the local market and then learned how to make some traditional Cambodian food.  If you’re in town, make sure to book ahead of time so the family is expecting you!

ROMCHEIK 5 ARTSPACE & CAFE

Romcheik 5 was a pleasant treat in Battambang.  This modern art museum contains works from Cambodian artists across the country and has some of the more unique art I’ve ever seen.  Plus at the top of the museum there’s a cafe where you can grab a cup of coffee and marvel at the great views.  The cost to enter is $5/person.

Battambang Itinerary – How to Spend 2-Days in the City

Here’s my ideal itinerary for spending 2 days in Battambang.  On day one I highlight what I believe shouldn’t be missed when you visit.  And if you’re able to spend two days in Battambang, day two would be other things that I would recommend seeing and doing.

Day 1 in Battambang

  • Bamboo Railway
  • Banan Temple
  • Killing Cave
  • Bat Cave Phnom Sampov
  • Dinner at Jaan Bai

Day 2 in Battambang

  • Coffee and breakfast at The Caff
  • Visit Romcheik 5

Things to Do in Battambang, Cambodia’s Creative Capital

Planning a trip to Battambang? My city guide covers all the best things to do in Battambang – including lesser-known gems – plus hotel, bar and restaurant recommendations, and transport instructions.

Battambang city, the provincial capital of Battambang Province in western Cambodia , is known for three things: Its expertly preserved French colonial architecture, its burgeoning creative scene, and its plentiful rice harvest (hence the nickname ‘Cambodia’s rice barn’).

Once the country’s unofficial cultural capital, Battambang (pronounced ‘Battam- bong ‘)used to be the epicentre of Cambodian art and music. If you know anything about the Pol Pot regime, you’ll understand why Battambang was hit hard. It’s estimated that 90% of Cambodia’s artists didn’t survive the genocide. (I hate the idea of reducing individual lives to a percentage point, but that’s the only data available). Many of them lived and worked in Battambang.

Today, the sleepy streets of Battambang are once again bubbling with vibrant cafes, artist-run galleries and boutique shops. Just outside the city, you can find some of Cambodia’s premier outdoor attractions and unusual activities, including the famous bamboo railway.

travel siem reap to battambang

Life in Battambang runs parallel to the banks of the Sangkae river and seeps out over pancake-flat rice fields into stilted villages, fruit orchards and crumbling temples, culminating in the modest peak of Sampeou mountain. It really is a beautiful, tranquil place.

Battambang has an energy like no other city I’ve experienced in Cambodia. Give me a bicycle and I could easily spend a month tracing its wide boulevards and never get bored!

I spent the better part of a week in Battambang when I lived in Cambodia. Although I haven’t been back since, I’m yearning to. This guide (which I took great pleasure in updating – it brings back so many good memories!) is designed for anyone who is planning to stay in Battambang for one or two days.

First impressions of Battambang

Spirituality, superstition and memories of a tragic past are more pronounced in Battambang than anywhere else I’ve visited in Cambodia. You can feel it in the air.

Once a colonial outpost, Battambang is now home to Cambodia’s highest number of artists per capita. Along with hoteliers, restaurateurs and social entrepreneurs, they are responsible for salvaging some of the city’s most beautiful and important landmarks and putting them to good use as cafes, boutique hotels and galleries.

Central Battambang is an interesting mix of Chinese shop houses and grand colonial buildings. The city is framed by a single road that follows the curve of the river. From there, it only takes minutes to drift into a bucolic landscape of dirt roads and rice paddies.

travel siem reap to battambang

The beating heart of Battambang is the Central Market – an example of New Khmer Architecture that’s hard to find anywhere else outside Phnom Penh . On the city’s outskirts lie crumbling temples (many of which pre-date Angkor) and Wat Kor Village, with its stilted houses and French-speaking matriarchs who pad the ancient floorboards, waiting for visitors to drop in.

More than 800 heritage facades can be found in Battambang’s ‘central zone’, secured by the German Development Service’s ‘Our City – Our Heritage’ project. (Rumours that Battambang will receive UNESCO Heritage status have been circulating since the mid-2000s.) This includes an Art Deco cinema that’s being used as a parking garage, and the oldest structure of all, a lovingly tended Chinese temple.

Vibrant shopfronts litter the city centre like confetti and murals depict some of the area’s just-as-colourful historic characters.

South of the centre is the once-walled area known as Kampaeng fort. This is where you’ll find most of Battambang’s built vestiges of French rule in the form of handsome colonial buildings. Both zones are easily explored in an afternoon on foot or bicycle using free maps produced by Khmer Architecture Tours .

How to get to Battambang

Unfortunately, my bus company of preference for long journeys in Cambodia, Giant Ibis (the same company I recently used to get from Bangkok to Siem Reap ), doesn’t service Battambang.

Instead, you’ll have to take a local bus, either a coach or minivan. Not all Cambodian bus companies have a good safety record. I’ve tried to select the most reputable (we personally chose to travel with Mekong Express when we visited Battambang). As always, I highly recommend you avoid travelling by road in Cambodia after dark.

If you don’t mind paying a bit extra, you can travel from Phnom Penh or Siem Reap to Battambang by hiring a private car and driver for the day. This is definitely the most comfortable and quickest way to travel.

If you’re really pressed for time or you just prefer to be accompanied by a guide, you can also join a full-day tour to Battambang from Siem Reap.

Phnom Penh to Battambang

You are spoiled for choice, with 14 daily departures from Phnom Penh, arriving in Battambang within 5 to 6 hours depending on traffic. There are four companies to choose from: Mekong Express (12 USD), Bayon VIP (10 USD), Meanchey Express (9 USD), and Cambodia Post VIP Van (9 USD).

The first bus at at 7am and the last leaves at 5.30pm. Cambodia Post VIP Van is the most reliable choice, but you’ll have to get in quick if you want to grab a seat on their single daily service, which leaves at 7.30am from outside the Phnom Penh Post Office (and yes, you probably will be sharing your seat with some cartons of mail! Fun!).

Tickets for all Phnom Penh to Battambang buses can be purchased in advance or on the day at the company offices, or online in advance through Baolau or Bookaway .

Alternatively, you can catch a private taxi to Battambang from Phnom Penh. Expect to pay between 70-90 USD one-way. Your accommodation in Phnom Penh (or Battambang) will be able to arrange this for you.

Where to stay in Battambang

Battambang has a good range of accommodation options for different budgets and travel styles. There are a few hotels right in the centre; however, I recommend staying on the edges of town at one of the ‘Siem Reap-style villas’ that comes with a pool.

travel siem reap to battambang

Top choice: The Sanctuary Villa

Leafy gardens and boardwalks, open-air pavilions, a beautiful pool, and rooms that open straight out onto a courtyard. I absolutely love The Sanctuary Villa and always recommend it to friends who are visiting Battambang.

Staff are extremely friendly and helpful, and the breakfast served daily is great, and there are bikes available to hire. With only a few very private villas, the real highlight here is the tranquil atmosphere – that might be down to the fact that we were the only guests when we stayed here for 5 nights over a holiday weekend!

Doubles start from just 30 USD, making this an excellent value-for-money choice in Battambang.

Budget Battambang hotels

The Place (from 5 USD) is located just north of the Central Market. This trendy hostel offers dorm-style accommodation (with privacy curtains) as well as double or twin rooms. With a rooftop bar and nicely designed rooms, it’s no wonder this a top choice for travellers who are wanting to get the best bang for their buck.

More minimalistic in style, Lucky Hostel and Guesthouse is another great budget option for backpackers (from 3 USD). More room options are available here, and there are even family rooms. The location is great, with the Central Market only an 8-minute walk away.

Mid-range Battambang hotels

Ramchang Guesthouse (from 10 USD) is the perfect choice if you want a mid-priced, relaxing stay in Battambang. Take advantage of the pool to cool down, and when you’re ready to go into town, you can jump on one of their free bicycles or get a tuk tuk for about 2 USD.

The Royal Hotel is a better option if you’d rather stay in the middle of town. With simple and clean rooms from 12 USD, it’s great value. There is even a jacuzzi! Just a note, there is no lift at this hotel.

Boutique Battambang hotels & resorts

Battambang Resort is located south of the city and is a solid option for anyone who wants a spacious room, lush surroundings and a chance to relax in or beside the pool. I especially recommend it for families. Although it is out of the city, there’s a delicious restaurant on-site, and breakfast comes included. Prices start from 113 USD.

Battambang Central Market (Psar Nat)

No matter what city you’re visiting in Cambodia or anywhere else in Southeast Asia, I always recommend starting your day with a visit to the local market.

As the name suggests, Battambang’s Central Market (Psar Nat in Khmer) is located smack-bang in the middle of the city, and is the main marketplace for food, household goods, and other products. For a local experience, pull up a stool at one of the little restaurants inside the market hall and order yourself a bowl of kuy teav noodle soup, a traditional Cambodian breakfast .

But before you venture inside, pause to admire the facade, which is a great example of Art Deco architecture. Built by French engineers in 1936, the yellow colour, tiered roof and clock tower are all signature design elements you see mirrored in the big markets in Phnom Penh and Kampong Cham (and in Saigon, too, for that matter).

Psar Nat is open daily from 6am to 6pm. Like other markets in Cambodia, it’s best to visit in the morning when the produce is plentiful and people watching opportunities are at their peak.

Join a ‘greater Battambang’ day tour

The easiest way to get out and explore the countryside around Battambang is by organising a tuk tuk through your accommodation. The standard itinerary includes a jaunt on the bamboo railway , wine tasting at a local vineyard, a visit to Wat Kor village , and a stop at one of two pre-Angkorian temples on the outskirts of town.

With sunset at Sampeou mountain thrown in, this will take you the better part of a day. Booked through your hotel, it should cost 15-20 USD – or you can go direct and tee something up with a driver on the street (they all carry laminated maps and picture guides).

We were lucky that our driver spoke good English and could narrate some of the more obscure sights for us. If we had our time again, we would skip the winery.

The next 6 things to do in Battambang are all part of a standard day tour itinerary.

Battambang bamboo train

By far Battambang’s most popular tourist attraction, the bamboo train (or bamboo railway) is a short stretch of track on the outskirts of the city .

Born out of necessity in the years after the civil war, the train was originally used to ferry people and produce around this part of Cambodia. Only a tiny section of the railway is still in-tact. The name ‘bamboo train’ comes from the flatbed platform that passengers (all tourists, mind you – locals don’t use it anymore) ride on.

The ‘norry’ runs at up to 50km per hour, which all things considered, actually feels pretty fast! Once it reaches the end of the line, the norry is disassembled and transferred to an adjacent set of tracks to take you back to the starting point.

The bamboo train costs 5 USD per person for a 20-minute ride. Bring a cotton scarf to wrap around your face – otherwise you’ll get a mouthful of midges!

Wat Kor village

There are dozens of picturesque stilted villages dotted around Battambang. Wat Kor, 2km south of Battambang, contains a number of heritage hardwood houses.

I love architecture, so this was my favourite spot on the tour. We visited Mrs Bun Roeung’s house and Khor Sang house, two of the oldest in the area (there are about 20 in total). Walking the floorboards of homes built in the early 1900s – surrounded by old photos and other family artefacts – is really special, particularly if the French-speaking matriarch is at home to show you around.

Wat Po Veal temple

Shaded by tall palms and ringed with towering white columns, Wat Po Veal is a sight to behold. One of the biggest active Buddhist pagodas in Battambang, it’s definitely worth a visit if you enjoy tranquil gardens and temple architecture.

The interior is a different story. In years gone by, Wat Po Veal was home to one Cambodia’s leading museums . Sadly, the collection of Angkorian treasures has been neglected and is currently gathering dust in the basement.

Chan Thai Choeung Winery

This very ‘rustic’ winery – one of only a handful in Cambodia – has a cellar door where you can sample red wine, rice wine and liqueur.

travel siem reap to battambang

Phnom Sampeau

Phnom Sampeau, Battambang’s highest peak, is most readily associated with the thick swarms of bats that escape from its limestone caves every evening like clockwork. It’s a great place to watch sunset – but the so-called ‘Battambang bat cave’ has a dark history.

Also known as the ‘Killing Caves’, the site is located about 11km southwest of Battambang. A pagoda and sombre display of human skulls (similar to that at Cheoung Ek in Phnom Penh) marks the spot where so many Cambodians lost their lives during the Khmer Rouge regime.

After visiting the caves and paying your respects, you can continue to the summit to take in the city views (good walking shoes are essential). Come dusk, millions of bats fly out of the caves to visit their feeding grounds, painting the sky with a stroke of black ink.

travel siem reap to battambang

Phare Circus

The most popular nighttime activity in Battambang is Phare Circus (Phare Ponleu Selpak). It doesn’t involve any animals, rather it’s a display of physical theatre, acrobatics and dance.

Phare was founded in 1994 by a group of young Cambodian friends after they returned home from a refugee camp. Using art as a tool for healing, they opened a community school and started offering professional arts training. Today, more than 1,200 pupils attend the school, and other 500 take advantage of Phare’s free vocational arts training programs. Proceeds from the sale of tickets are used to fund their outreach work.

If you only have one night in Battambang, I highly recommend booking tickets in advance . There’s a rotating program of shows, with performances on most nights (check the calendar here ). The circus is located about 10-minute tuk-tuk ride north-west of the city centre. If you’re up for a challenge, there’s also an opportunity to take part in a workshop through Backstreet Academy to learn some circus skills.

2 days in Battambang or more: Quirky & unusual things to do in Battambang

If you have more time to spend in Battambang or you’d rather skip the touristy sights in favour of something more local, here are my favourite alternative things to do in Battambang city.

Discover all the best things to do in Battambang, Cambodia – including a few local secrets – with my comprehensive Battambang travel guide.

Go on a self-guided architecture walking tour

As I’ve mentioned, Battambang has hundreds of beautifully preserved French-era buildings. Free PDF maps produced by Khmer Architecture Tours ( Central & South ) include all the highlights and can easily be covered by bicycle in an afternoon. Just be aware that some of the sites – notably The Royal Bungalow – are off limits to the public and only visible through locked gates.

My favourite stop on the architecture tour, Battambang’s Chinese temple, is the oldest structure inside the city’s conservation area. It boasts some incredibly vivid murals inside. You can read all about the history of the spirit house on the KAT Central map – or strike up a conversation with the watchman who will happily let you in and show you around.

Walk down Buffalo Alley

Buffalo Alley, or Kampung Krabey , takes its name from the farmers who used to take their livestock down the pathway as a shortcut to the river. Today, it’s a trendy laneway lined with cafes and shops.

Discover all the best things to do in Battambang, Cambodia – including a few local secrets – with my comprehensive Battambang travel guide.

Take a bicycle tour with Soksabike

Hiring a bicycle in Battambang is fantastic way to explore the city and the surrounding countryside. On a bike tour with socially responsible company Soksabike , you’ll see rice fields, small villages and some of the area’s top temples, including Wat Ek Phnom and Wat Kor. Soksabike run a vocational program for youth and involve local families in their tours .

Join a cooking class

Smokin’ Pot, Nary Kitchen and Coconut Lyly all offer hands-on cooking classes so you can learn how to recreate your favourite Khmer dishes at home. Battambang is the ideal place to do a cooking class in Cambodia – groups are generally smaller, and many cooking classes are set in countryside kitchens.

See contemporary art at Romcheik 5

With more artists per capita than anywhere else in Cambodia, Battambang prides itself on being a creative city. There are plenty of galleries and studio spaces in the heart of town, but Romcheik 5 – a relatively recent addition to the scene – is by far my favourite.

Located over the bridge and down a dirt road, Romcheik 5 functions as both an artists’ commune and a display/performance space. Four young Khmer creatives live here with their families, and a permanent display of their work can be viewed upstairs. The downstairs gallery is set aside for special exhibitions.

There’s also a cool rooftop cafe on site that opened in 2019.

Have afternoon tea at The Lonely Tree Café

Not only does Lonely Tree have one of Battambang’s loveliest interiors, it also has a great food and drink menu. When an afternoon storm is rolling its way over Battambang, Lonely Tree’s covered balcony is where you want to be – sipping on a cold beer and digging into a slice of homemade key lime pie.

Don’t leave without having a look at the shop downstairs, which sells cotton shirts, a handful of upcycled vintage garments, a great selection of krama scarves, jewellery, and other assorted souvenirs. Most things are made locally in Battambang, crafted by people with physical disabilities (hence the decorative wheelchair hanging from the shop ceiling).

I was really impressed with the quality of fabrics and contemporary, well considered designs: comfy Thai-style pants (every traveller’s dream) and lightweight throwovers (perfect for protecting shoulders from the sun). We both picked up a few button-down shirts.

Shop for souvenirs at Bric-a-Brac

Run by Australian artist Morrison Polkinghorne and his partner, Bric–a–Brac is a beautiful studio/shop/bar/boutique hotel in the heart of Battambang.

Set in a beautiful four-story heritage building, the shop downstairs stocks an eclectic edit of vintage odds and ends. Morrison spent 18 years travelling around Asia before moving to Cambodia (including more than 50 trips to Myanmar!), and the evidence of his adventures (and his passion for handmade items) is splashed all over the shop floor.

The real joy of Bric–a–Brac is the sheer volume of tassels and trimmings on display. Many are antiques, but most have been handmade by Morrison and his staff for his label Passementeries. The colours; the textures; the shapes… My preconceptions of tassels as boring little afterthoughts added onto textiles has completely changed!

There is one specialty loom on the shop floor where you can see bullion fringe weaving in action. The equipment, the process and the unusual story of how Morrison got involved in the niche business of tassels and trimmings are all quite incredible.

Bric-a-Brac is also home to a boutique hotel and in the evenings, a footpath bar.

Have a drink at Bambu Hotel

Located on the opposite bank of the river, Bambu Hotel is a beautifully restored colonial-era villa. Even if you’re not staying here, it’s worth dropping in for a poolside drink if only to admire the hotel lobby’s press-tiled floors.

Drink coffee at Kinyei Café

Managed by Feel Good Coffee, Kinyei is owned by its Khmer staff and offers a vocational training program for local youth. They also make the best coffee in town!

Be sure to visit their cafes in Phnom Penh as well.

Find a piece of art to take home

Tep Kao Sol is one of a dozen shop/galleries in town that sells framed and unframed prints and postcards bearing line sketches and watercolour illustrations of Battambang, Angkor and other recognisable Cambodian subjects. They also stock DIY art supplies, including recycled paper.

Battambang Night Market

The Battambang Night Market is located on the Snagker River next to Central Market. Starting at around 4pm, this local-orientated market is a good place to try Battambang street food.

Where to eat and drink in Battambang

Jaan Bai is a social enterprise restaurant that specialises in modern Khmer cuisine. Offering seasonal produce and top-class cocktails, it’s a foodies delight. All profits go to the Cambodian Children’s Trust, a very worthy non-profit that works to improve the lives of vulnerable and impoverished young people. More info and reviews here.

Nary Kitchen offers diners traditional Cambodian dishes prepared in a home-style kitchen from fresh ingredients. They also offer a popular cooking class, so you can learn how to make some of their delicious dishes at home. More info and reviews here.

If you are looking for a change from Khmer food, Flavors of India can supply your masala and naan fix. The restaurant is located on Street 121, near the river. More info and reviews here.

The Balcony is a popular expat haunt in Battambang and runs a good program of sports/film screenings and events. The location, a tumble-down wooden stilted house on the river, is very atmospheric. Drinks are affordable, and there’s thin-crust pizza on the menu. Visit their Facebook page for more information.

Head up to The Place Rooftop Bar and Restaurant if you want to chill out and exchange stories with fellow travellers. Cheap beer and a mix of western and Khmer food are the go. More info and reviews here.

5 things to pack for Battambang

  • A reusable water bottle. Absolutely essential in Cambodia for minimising plastic waste and staying hydrated. I love my S’Well water bottle – it’s vacuum insulated to keep water icy cold for the whole day, and it doesn’t sweat. If you like your mango smoothies, pack a reusable smoothie cup as well.
  • Rehydration tablets or sachets. At the end of a long day bike riding or exploring temples, your body will be crying out for electrolytes (believe me!). I prefer Hydralyte tablets because they come in a handy tube. If you forget to bring some from home, the Double D brand is sold at most pharmacies and grocery stores in Cambodia.
  • Rain jacket and travel umbrella for the wet season. Wet season is my favourite time to travel in Cambodia because the countryside is so verdant. Downpours come out of nowhere, so it’s essential to have a rain jacket with you at all times (I love the packable rain jackets by Lomon for women and EZRUN for men ). I also carry a travel umbrella in case it’s too hot and steamy to wear a jacket. This one is UPF 50+, making it great for sun cover as well.
  • A sturdy day pack. An anti-theft backpack is particularly good for the cities, especially Phnom Penh. Opt for a minimalist backpack that doesn’t stand out like a sore thumb.
  • Cambodia guide book. I prefer Lonely Planet’s dedicated Cambodia guidebook or regional guidebook that also covers Laos, Vietnam and Northern Thailand.

Things to do in Battambang: Pin it!

Discover all the best things to do in Battambang, Cambodia – including a few local secrets – with my comprehensive Battambang travel guide.

Thanks so much for your blog it’s been great so far. Our absolute favorite was over night stay with Banteay Chhmar tourism. This was magical and the community tourism needs support.

I would update Battambang sanctuary resort.. (nice people) It’s very tired now and the beds are like rocks, they tried to give us a doona to sleep on. But in the end (after two nights of no sleep) changed to Cambana La Riviùre Hotel. Better prices and new with coffee that is acceptable to my NZ & my French husbands taste.

Just having dinner and drinks at the lonely tree cafe, were I bought up beautiful scarves and throws!

Back to PP tomorrow to the White Mansion that we loved so much we are returning too!

Thanks again for the tips.

Thank you so much Michelle for the update! So glad you made it to Banteay Chhmar. That’s unfortunate about Battambang, we had such a pleasant stay many mooons ago. I will update it. Enjoy the rest of your time in Cambodia!

Thank you so much again for your amazing gem of a blog
been using it last month in Georgia and Vietnam and this month in Cambodia. Just left Battambang and as of June 2022 unfortunately a few places have closed. One to mention is Brick-a-Brac have closed permanently (I talked to the owner). Kinyei CafĂ© and Jaan Bai are quite lovely. Soksabike located right next to them lended me an excellent mountain bike. The architecture is heart-expanding beautiful. My favorite places were Romcheik gallery, where I went twice I two days.. I even found an amazing piece to bring back home. Phnom Sapaeu is great with the bats (also no people). The Phare circus unfortunately doesn’t do shows currently, but there is a rumor in the street that they show some tricks on in at the road side sometimes
I wish, I could’ve seen them. The road Battambang-Phnom Penh is currently under construction – at least six hours by car. The road Battambang-Siem Reap is much better. A quick 2-2,5 hours by car. The town is so quiet and so lovely. Thank you!

Loved your post…I have visited Angkor Wat but never knew that Batambang is so beautiful…I have to plan to visit Cambodia again just for Batambang

So happy to hear that!

I love reading your posts. They are always refreshingly accurate and the photos are particularly vivid and appropriate. The links in your Battambang post to the places you mention were also very helpful. Thank you for the time and energy you devote to Wanderlush!!!

Margret – thank you so much for reading and for your comment! I really truly appreciate it. I’m glad you are finding my posts helpful! Please get in touch if you’re in Cambodia any time soon!

From Battambang to Siem Reap by boat

From Battambang to Siem Reap by boat

After Battambang, it was time to go to Siem Reap. There are different options to get to Siem Reap from Battambang, by bus or taxi, 3-4 hours or by boat, 5 to 10 hours. We chose the boat. We wanted to see Tonlé Sap, Cambodia’s largest lake, and the floating villages.

In this post, you will find everything you need to know about the boat trip from Battambang to Siem Reap.

Tickets

Taking the boat offers views of floating villages and some beautiful local landscapes. The ride also includes a lunch stop at a floating restaurant. The restaurant serves local food.

The boat ride will take you through the Sangker River and arrives at Phnom Krom ferry port. From the port, you can take a tuk-tuk to Siem Reaps city center. The route will look like this; Battambang – Sangker River – Tonle Sap Lake – Siem Reap River – Phnom Krom Dock.

Our experience

travel siem reap to battambang

The first part of the boat trip was along the Sangker River. We sat on the roof of the boat, which gave us a good view of all there was to see. We saw floating houses, floating shops, fishermen in longboats, and kids who were waving excitedly at us from their homes.

When you are on such a long trip you certainly need a little break in the middle. Our break was after 4 hours. We stopped at a little floating restaurant. We bought some drinks and snacks for the rest of our trip.

During the second part of our boat trip, the trees became so tall and the reeds in the river became so thick. At one point we got stuck and the captain had to fish out a bunch of tangled reeds around the propeller. This took about 30 minutes.

Again and again, floating villages appeared out of nowhere. In every village little boats are approaching to try to sell us snacks or pick up one of the local passengers on board. It was unbelievable how happy the people seem to be there, many of them smiling and waving at us. We saw many of them taking baths and washing their laundry in the water of the lake.

After some time we entered the huge Tonle Sap Lake. It felt like we were on the sea as everything we saw around us was water.

The joy of seeing floating houses and the local scenery started to fade in the seventh hour of our trip. After around 9 hours we finally arrived in Siem Reap. Don’t get us wrong the trip was amazing, but 9 hours on a boat is definitely enough for us! We were happy when our feet touched solid ground again. From there we took a tuk-tuk to our hostel in Siem Reaps city center.

2. Bring enough snacks and water for the trip.

3. Take sunscreen and a hat if you want to sit on the upper deck.

4. Try to get a spot in front, there you have the least engine noise.

5. Headphones, or earplugs. Trust us, you don’t want to listen to that loud motor drone for 9 hours straight.

6. There is only one stop for lunch and a toilet visit.

7. Bring a pillow with you, you have to sit on board for a long time.

This was really quite an adventure and a unique way to experience rural Cambodia.

My 8 Favorite Experiences In Beautiful Siem Reap, Cambodia

S iem Reap is the gateway to the fascinating UNESCO-listed Angkor Archaeological Park and attracts travelers seeking to learn about the ancient Khmer Kingdom — which ruled from the 9th to 15th centuries. Many people are also now visiting Cambodia to experience the spirit and resilience of this free-from-conflict and developing country.

As you wander the bustling streets of downtown Siem Reap, you’ll be swept up in the colorful chaos of tuk-tuks, street vendors, and bustling markets. But beyond this, Siem Reap offers an incredible array of experiences — from indulging in delicious Cambodian cuisine, exploring traditional Khmer villages, participating in Buddhist rituals with saffron-robed monks, or delving into the burgeoning art scene.

Let me introduce you to my favorite experiences from a recent trip to Siem Reap, Cambodia.

1. Angkor Archaeological Park

The Angkor Archaeological Park contains the magnificent remains of the Khmer Empire’s different capitals, stretching over 155 square miles. Star attractions include Angkor Wat, the world’s largest religious site; Bayon, renowned for its massive stone faces; Ta Prohm, with trees growing through the ruins; and Banteay Srei.

You can visit the park independently, by tuk-tuk, bicycle, or motorbike. The best option is to engage a park-accredited guide to understand the stories behind the structures, sculptures, and history.

Being a fan of small group touring, I found Vespa Adventures offered me the sense of freedom I was after. Then there is the fun of being piloted around the park on a gloriously maintained Vespa by an experienced bike rider. We traveled on quiet laneways and through forest paths, giving us a sense that we were the only visitors. We also arrived at less-crowded temple entrances and other sites. Our guide shared Angkorian stories at each stop.

Vespa Adventures offers full and half-day tours of Angkor Park, plus countryside tours and even an evening food tour. These have to be the best fun for people wanting a sense of independence and adventure while benefiting from a guided small group tour.

Pro Tip: Angkor park passes (personalized photo ID tickets) are only available from the official park ticket office . Single-day, 3-day, and 7-day passes are available, but one day is never enough. A 3-day pass, valid for 7 days, allows you to intersperse your park visits with other Siem Reap activities.

2. Grasshopper Adventures

What better way to see the countryside and gain glimpses of local people’s daily lives than by cycling? Grasshopper Adventures’ guided half and full-day tours around Siem Reap and the Angkor temples offer a selection of itineraries. And for us 60-something-year-old travelers, their E-bike Ultimate Countryside Tour sounded perfect.

Our guide, Bunvath, familiarized us with the e-bikes and gave us a safety brief — ready for the 7:30 a.m. start to beat the heat. We traveled on almost traffic-free back streets, and once in the country, it was down village lanes, between rice fields, and skirting through local farms.

The half-day tour had many breaks, including a temple with some friendly novice monks, a local fresh food market, and a scenic reservoir for a traditional late-morning snack. Plus, we visited two local villages to see people making rice noodles in one and sticky rice snacks in another. These were not “shows” put on for us, just life happening as it always does.

Pro Tip: Though Grasshopper Adventures offers regular bikes, an e-bike is recommended unless you are a seasoned bicycle rider. We traveled over relatively flat terrain; the e-bike made the 35 miles much more manageable, allowing us to take in the scenery and enjoy more of the experience.

3. Kulen Elephant Forest

Kulen Elephant Forest is 1,100 acres of protected forest an hour from Siem Reap. It is now home to the elephants that, until a few years ago, provided tourists with rides around the Angkor temples — a practice that has since ceased. Now retired, these elephants enjoy a long-awaited and well-deserved saddle- and chain-free life, rediscovering relationships within the herd while receiving the best care.

Visitors can do a morning or afternoon tour and learn about elephant conservation. In a hands-on approach, you’ll make snacks to feed the elephants and then wander with these giants as they graze and play. With only 75 captive elephants remaining in Cambodia, the leaders at Kulen Elephant Park aim to inspire other elephant owners across Cambodia to look more toward the conservation model as a natural alternative. The tour price contributes to this noble cause and is a tourism model I gladly support.

4. Phare Circus

Phare , the Cambodian Circus, is a cross between a highly energetic and engaging theater in the round on a smaller scale, though equally enthralling as Cirque du Soleil. Opening in 2013 to create meaningful employment opportunities for Cambodian artists, it continues to provide highly entertaining nightly shows under a 330-person big top.

The back story makes this venture even more compelling. Nine young Cambodian men in a refugee camp during the Khmer Rouge time found the provided drawing classes to be a powerful form of healing. Returning to their home district of Battambang in 1994, they began offering free drawing classes to street children.

They then opened a school named Phare Ponleu Selpak , which translates to “The Brightness of the Art.” Today, more than 1,200 pupils attend this open school, from entry-level to year 12. Additionally, some 500 students participate in vocational programs with professional visual arts, theater, music, dance, and circus training. All of this education is free to students, with much of the funding coming from Phare’s daily performances.

Phare’s spellbinding circus performance would attract adoring crowds at any international venue. Knowing that your ticket price does so much more than just keep these artists in work makes it a double “must-do”’ when visiting Siem Reap.

Pro Tip: Go early, enjoy street food and pre-show entertainment in the leafy courtyard, and browse the quality boutique and gift shop. Once again, all profits go back to the schools.

5. Cuisine Wat Damnak

A native of Lyon, France, Chef Joannùs Riviere first came to Cambodia as a volunteer cooking instructor in 2003. While at the Siem Reap Hotel School, Johannes created a “Cambodian Cooking” cookbook. The goal? Record and preserve recipes and the culinary knowledge of a country that had seen much of its past wiped out by the Khmer Rouge. Joannùs then spent several years as executive chef at the city’s famed Hotel de la Paix before opening Cuisine Wat Damnak in 2013.

The setting is a transformed traditional teak timber house in a sculptured garden in the trending Wat Bo village within Siem Reap. With a dedication to farm-to-table and seasonality, JoannĂšs and his business partner, Nguon Venchhay (Chai), offer a regularly changing six- to eight-course tasting menu showcasing the best of Cambodian cuisine, along with a plant-based tasting menu. The outcome is a decidedly delicious tour of Cambodian produce and culinary style served in a refined manner and well worth an evening of your time.

Pro Tip: If you are also visiting Cambodia’s capital city — Phnom Penh — book a table at the gloriously renovated villa that is Cuisine Wat Damnak, Phnom Penh .

6. Siem Reap Arts Tours

Robina Hanley, a 15-year resident of Temple Town, operates Siem Reap Arts Tours . Her behind-the-scenes tours not only take you to the exhibitions, galleries, workshops, ateliers, and boutiques of the surprising cadre of resident local and international artists, but she can also often introduce you to the artists themselves.

Examples of just two artists we met on this tour were Cambodian Master Artist Lim Muy Theam from Theam’s Gallery. His family became refugees in France due to the Khmer Rouge regime. Gaining fine arts and design qualifications, Theam returned to Cambodia in 1997 and has led initiatives reviving the arts and craft sector.

And the other artist we met in his new Siem Reap gallery, Belgium-born and now Cambodian-based Christian Develter exhibits his large, bright, and compelling pieces — like his Chin series depicting the intricately tattooed faces of Burmese tribal women.

Pro Tip: Robina curates tours for your particular interests. Be prepared to be wowed and impressively surprised at the creative arts and fashion scene in Siem Reap .

7. Sokkhak Riverside Spa

After hours of tramping around the ancient Angkor temples or Siem Reap’s bustling streets, your body will need a reward. Of the many massage studios and spas available, Sokkhak Riverside Spa stands out. Sokkhak means “tranquil” in Khmer and seems appropriate given the spa’s restful riverside location and invitingly spacious and luxurious ambiance.

Sokkhak Spa offers a broad range of spa and beauty treatments, facials, romantic packages, and massages, including their signature Khmer Traditional Massage —said to pre-date the famous Thai massage. Being a lover of Thai massages, I had to try the Khmer signature, and at the usual 90-minute finishing mark, I did not want it to stop. Bookings for Sokkhak Riverside Spa are recommended, and you may thank yourself (and me) once you visit.

8. Angkor Zipline

Ziplining has long been on our bucket list. The opportunity to soar through Angkor Archaeological Park’s treetops resolved our dilemma. Being apprehensive first-timers, the Angkor Zipline team impressed us with their dedication to safety and the comfort of their riders.

There are two tour options: “Gold” offers the most flies between the trees, plus the highest and longest runs; “Silver” misses out on the longest runs but has the bonus of abseiling down from the last platform for one final adrenaline hit. Part of the adventure is climbing narrow stairs and crossing sky bridges to reach various platforms. However, you are constantly clipped onto safety cables with the undivided attention of the safety rangers. At over 700 feet above the ground, the views are well worth it.

Our rangers mentioned that an 82-year-old lady had recently completed the course, dashing the thought we may have been the oldest.

Pro Tip: Angkor Zipline now offers a mountain bike tour to combine with ziplining. This way, you explore the tree tops and forest floor in a half-day tour.
