For anyone travelling with TUI I hope this gives you a better idea of what to expect as we found information lacking and didn't really know what to expect! Basically it was very coach heavy but still enjoyable. This is based on a Wednesday - Sunday trip, with two excursions included (Northern Lights and Golden Circle)

Day 1 - Wednesday

That day we explored Reykjavik. We were told the Northern Lights tour may or may not be on but we would be informed via the TUI app and by text message after 2pm. It turned out to be cancelled that day and we did get a text and a message via the TUI app, in fact 7 identical text messages..!

Day 2 - Thursday

As the first full day this is the day of your Golden Circle tour. We were collected by coach at bus stop number 4 again (opposite our hotel) TUI tell you that you have to be prepared to wait for 30 mins. So if they say 8:30 pick up, it could be anytime between 8:30-9. The coaches are quite comfortable but the toilets are locked so you have to wait until you stop. The reps talk most of the journey with facts and information, it is interesting but you can also nap if you want to! The first stop was after 1hr 30 and was the Geysir. We had 25 mins so by the time we walked over you only got to see it erupt twice before having to head back. It was then just a short journey (5 mins) to the next stop which was the lunch stop at Gulfoss waterfall - and we had 1hr 30. The included lunch which was a very nice lamb and mint soup, there was a veggie option of a mushroom soup (my other half is a veggie who hates mushroom but loved it) it came with a bread roll, tea and coffee and a piece of chocolate cake. Be warned you have to sit on tables with people from your bus! Not for long though, once done you can get up and walk to the waterfall. Plenty of time here and you could walk to all the vantage points. Then 1 hour to Thingvellir National Park where the two tectonic plates meet. We were only given 20 minutes and it was not long enough to walk all the way down the path. I overheard someone say, they've given us the shortest amount of time for the longest walk! That was a bit of a shame. Then about 40 mins back to town. Free from about 4:00pm.

Northern Lights tour was on today - we were picked up and taken to a golf club about 30 minutes outside town, I was a bit disappointed as it was still quite bright, there was lots of headlights around and you could see the city lights on the horizon.. BUT we did see the lights! They were green and beautiful. There were bus loads of people all standing around so quite busy but a good atmosphere. There was a small clubhouse with toilets and you could get a hot drink if you wanted.

Day 3 - Friday

We had booked to go to The Blue Lagoon separately via Reykjavik Excursions as TUI only gave the option to go at 5:00pm which we thought was too late, however a storm came in and Reykjavik Excursions cancelled our trip but I asked the rep if we could get on that trip and they managed to get us on it at late notice thankfully was a relief as the storm had calmed down by then. During the day we went to Perlan Museum which was fun, lovely Northern Lights show in the planetarium and some ice caves. Plus a lovely cafe on the top floor with panoramic views. The Blue Lagoon was great, we started off with blue sunny skies, then in turned dark and we saw the northern lights, again! They were red this time. We felt very lucky indeed. Bit of an awkward time getting back though, gone 10pm. Too late for dinner, luckily had some crisps and snacks in our room.

Saturday - Day 4

We booked to go on the TUI south island tour or South Shore as they call it. Honestly I wouldn't bother with it, no where near as good as the Golden Circle. Our rep Lina was brilliant and had excellent local knowledge as she lives in the area but it was just a bit disappointing personally. 2 hours on the bus to arrive at a service station for a loo/coffee break, another hour to get to Skógafoss waterfall, for a 20 min stop, then 1 hour to Vik black sand beach for a 20 min stop then another 15 min drive to another service station type place where you can buy lunch (luckily we brought our own as the queues were crazy long) and a couple of nice wool/souvenir shops. You can walk to the beach from here too but it was all a bit boring. We had 1 hr 45 mins there. Afterwards we went to Seljalandsfoss waterfall where we had about 20 mins then it was 2 hours back to town. We got back about 5ish. I think our stops were shorter than normal as it was very snowy/icy at the waterfalls and the steps were too dangerous but they didn't do anything in place of that.

Sunday - Day 5

You are collected at 7:30am and taken to the airport. Our hotel served breakfast from 7:00am which was a bit late as we had to leave at 7:15 to get to the bus stop. I recommend taking something to each on the coach, it took about an hour to get to the airport and then it takes another hour to get through to departures, TUI has 8 coaches and they all arrive at the same time to check in so the queues are quite long, although they did move quickly.

So yes very coach heavy but a good way to see everything. Sorry it's a lot of info but hopefully someone will find it useful as I had no clue what to expect really. TUI doesn't give much information away!

Good report, helps folks understand what they are getting. Also shows a bit of the issue with a South Coast tour during minimal daylight time of the year

Some nice nimbleness there with the BL visit.

Be prepared to be looking for a grey dot, in a grey sea, under a grey sky. The seas are likely to be rough & it will be bitterly cold & wet. You may be sea sick.

I was sitting in a cafe watching one boat unload, they didn’t look happy & looked rather green.

It’s one trip I’d not do in winter.

This trip was absolutely incredible. I traveled with my mom, aunt and cousin on the "Easy" package. Every tour had the perfect amount of variety and variations along the way. We had two different tour companies for the four days of guided tours and both were outstanding - small bus and small groups made it almost like a private tour. The guides were awesome and laid back and contributed to the amazing all around experience. Guide to Iceland was an amazing service. My mom and I booked separately from our other two and Guide to Iceland did an amazing job merging our packages and ensuring that we were able to travel together. There was one day that our itineraries were different, but within a couple hours they had everything fixed and the changes happened without a hitch! I will definitely use them again in the future

We had a wonderful trip! Car rental and hotel accomodation worked perfectly - all was ready and waiting. We changed the itinerary a bit by adding an extra night between Höfn and Reykjavik, as we didn't want to drive 450km on one day (no problem to change with Guide to Iceland, but there is an amendment fee). Thanks very much for the great documentation about the trip - no need to read another book - it's all there! (Would recommend buying a road map though). Will recommend Guide to Iceland to all our friends!

It was the best trip ever! We were really lucky with the weather and saw all the picturesque views in great condition! All the excursions included in this 8-day tour were very well organized. It's the best choice to book this tour if you want the most fulfilling 8 days in Iceland. The customer service responded very quickly and was very helpful.

Iceland is located in NW Europe next to Norway. Its capital is Reykjavik on the southern shore of Faxa Bay. Most of the population lives along the coastline and in Reykjavik. The interior land is much too cold to be inhabited, but the climate along the coast is generally cool. In fact, summer temperatures average 55F (13C), so mosquitoes are never a problem! Iceland is known for its stark contrasts, with long dark nights in the winter, and midnight sun in the summer. Its many lakes and glaciers and its many active volcanoes have earned Iceland the name Land of Fire and Ice. Iceland is known for its dramatic volcanic landscape, hot springs, and lava fields. The most popular glaciers are in Vatnajokull and Snaefellsjokull National Parks. Check out our Island shore excursions for your Island cruise! Many cruise lines make calls in Iceland including Cruise and Maritime, Celebrity, Phoenix, MSC, AIDA, NCL, Seabourn, Princess, Fred Olsen, P&O, Cunard, TUI, Silversea, Regent, Windstar, Holland America, Costa, Voyages to Antiquity, Oceania, Azamara, and Viking Ocean. During your visit to Iceland, there are plenty of things to experience on your Iceland excursions. You may visit the fjords along the coastline or visit the Gullfoss waterfall. You'll find geysers and lagoons to meander. For more adventure, go whale watching, white water rafting, or hiking. For magical experiences, visit the Blue Lagoon, a geothermal spa in the middle of a lava field. You'll find the area covered in surreal steam or fog. You won't want to pass up traditional Icelandic food, such as harofiskur, a dried fish snack; skyr, similar to yogurt; hangikjot, smoked lamb; or whale meat dishes (don't worry, they're legal!). Iceland is a place to experience adventure- we'll see you there on our Iceland shore excursions!

Marella Discovery Excursions - are they value for money?

Cool Cruiser

Came back from the Asia cruise that took in Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Cambodia and Vietnam. I have to say that the cruise ship was very good but some of the Shore Excursions at the various ports appear very poor and not value for money.

We booked several trips before we left because we weren't sure of how far the docking was from the ship, if there would be any alternatives on shore for us to explore etc.

we found from talking to other more experienced Travellers on board that they went to the same places that we had been to, stayed longer at others and had paid a lot less ( in some cases up to £30-£60). I know people will say that on the organised trip you have a guide and that the trip will be safe, having been selected by Tui.

i thought so myself but our visit to Sihanoukville by Tuk Tuk still sends shivers down my spine. Not only was the excursion was a shambles

( Guide went to one Temple, the 10 Tuk Tuks went to another, after being taken to the wrong Tuk Tuks)

our Tuk Tuk was when we started ok but we were cramped , we sat facing each other, with our feet on the spare tyre as the driver drove whilst watching a Kung Fu movie on his phone, which was propped up behind the steering wheel. We thought at first he had the radio on but he was watching a film! On the way back the exhaust blew, we got off the Tuk to find ourselves covered in paint from gripping the sides so hard, we had to tell to follow the other Tuks because had no mirrors to see. If we moved we banged into him because the screen separating us from him was plastic.

the point was the excursion was unsafe, the Tuks were not roadworthy and the Guide admitted that the company was not the usual one they used.

if we had gone on our own we could have found a sound Tuk, agreed a price and gone round all the places for half the price.

When we asked for our money back from Tui, they offered 30% as a goodwill gesture which we turned down. Having got back home we complained to Head Office at Tui who said " that's what aTuk Tuk is like in Cambodia! Not true, we saw some very safe and fancy looking Tuks.

from this we concluded that we would do our Excursions independently or with others to lessen the cost and went to many of the same destinations as the organised tour and stayed longer at the places we liked and didn't visit Temple after Temple.

all our forays were good, cheaper, and we felt safe. The drivers all had a sheet with pictures of the places that you wanted to visit and you just pointed to them and off you went.

what are other travellers experience of the Organised Excursions that Ships offer? Do you think they are worth the money?

There are lots of options, you just have to work out which is the best for you. Marella excursions are probably not the best, but in some cases they are the only option and they, at least,  get you back to the ship on time. Private excursions, if possible, are great and tend to be smaller groups. Lots of ports are DIY possible. We have done both options and luckily we have been very lucky with our choices.

Cristaltips

I agree about the Marella trips not being value for money. I feel that we were very much used as guinea pigs for their first Asia cruises.

We also did a Tuk Tuk  trip in Cambodia. It was sold as 4.5 hours. We left ship at 9.00 to transport to Tuk Tuk then sat on it for at least 15 mins while they got everyone together. The traffic was awful and I did fear for my life over the state of the vehicle. However, we lived to tell the tale and were back on the ship by 12.30. Doesn’t need a mathematician to work out that wasn’t 4.5 hours!

The Penang trip. We visited a temple (of course!) and a batik factory which was very good. The rest of the trip ( in a coach with no apparent rear suspension) went downhill. A visit to see a fruit and spice stall on the side of a busy road, and the finale was to see , in the distance, a bridge linking Penang to the mainland!

Bangkok. We drove for 2 hours ( had a comfort stop at motorway services) into Bangkok. Drove round passing Chinatown and Flower Market and stopped for a temple visit for about 30 mins. Then drove back, another 2 hours, another comfort stop.

As it was our first trip to this part of the world, we were wary about doing things on our own and getting back on time. However, we feel we missed seeing a lot on the trips we did. Marella really need to review their trips in my opinion.

Just back from Red Sea Odyssey and thought the excursions were overpriced and very rushed, also poorly described in terms of ability, accessibility, and duration.  Destination Services were terrible, giving out wrong information beforehand and very confrontational and rude when we complained afterwards.  Don't get me wrong, we we're thrilled to be able to visit these places, and having never been in that area before we're glad to have the "safety" of being on a ships excursion, but if you are more confident and can arrange an alternative I'd do it!

Jayneykul

We did a ships tour in Civitavecchia As we had done several previous trips in to Rome. We thought it was very good value and definitely much cheaper than the American lines.

Done a few excursions via Tui from cruise ships.  Found some great, some quite poor.  You will probably get cheaper and better value through other companies.    The reason I go through Tui is for the protection.  If something goes wrong whilst on their excursion eg. bus breaks down or something, the ship will wait till your back on board.  I wouldn't be too confident if you went through ACME Tours, bus broke down and there was no way you would reembark the ship before it was due to leave port.

ollienbertsmum

I am reading this because I am considering a Marella cruise and want to hear what people say about the whole experience.  However I am never keen on ship tours.  They are usually overpriced.  They have to be.  If a tour operates usually prices a tour.  The ship negotiates a price,  There has to be a commission.

I understand nerves though when going on a first trip to Asia.  Once you have done your first trip you will know what it is like and be braver about independent tours ..  and Tuk Tuks!!

MAke sure that you leave the ship early and allow an hour or so extra to get back.  I think that one important consideration is how easily you will get to your next destination if you should miss the ship (and I am sure it rarely happens).

If your next port is reached after 4 days at sea, you need to be very careful.  If your next port is 200 km up the coast, you can be braver.

Great TUI day trip

We had a great day visiting the Geysir which was amazing then onto Gullfoss waterfall which was dressed in its winter coat and looking amazing. The roar of the water could be heard long before you reached it by foot. Then we stopped at Thingvellir National Park which was impressive too. Great day and some amazing sights

tui iceland excursions review

Aside from being collected 40 minutes late from our hotel, we had the most spectacular day. From start to finish we had blue sky, although it was extremely cold - 10degrees, with a bitterly cold wind. The coach was warm though! The stop to see the sunrise was just awesome and the colours of the sky and the light on the mountains was something I will always remember. Our guide was very knowledgeable and informative, and gave us enough time at each stop to walk around, take pictures and get food/drinks as we needed. It was definitely a tour to do and we had a truly memorable day.

This was a day trip and would be great anytime of the year!! It was very windy the day we went but we still enjoyed it all!! Have to do some walking to get to the sites but well worth it great views!! Not sure of the individual cost it was part of a travel package we booked.

tui iceland excursions review

Such a great day and well worth giving up a day. We had a chap called “Rumor” who was just great, and being an ex physics teacher his knowledge was outstanding.

tui iceland excursions review

We booked this express tour with Reykjavik sightseeing via expedia. The bus picked us up at the hotel and delivered us to the bus depot to change to another bus. Guide pointed out sights and provided an iPad for info along the way to the national park, geyser and waterfall. Reasonable amount of time given at each location. Comfortable bus and a great experience. A don't miss for touring Iceland.

Such an interesting afternoon tour in spite of the fading light. Our guide Runar, the physics teacher, was outstanding. So informative and delivered in a very clear style. Never thought I'd be standing on 2 tectonic plates at the same time. Great waterfall and geothermal activity. Our driver Barte, was excellent, coping with the icy roads. Remember to dress warmly , it is winter after all.

Great trip. Very helpful staff and good guide.

Boat was lovely, I think it was rather crowded to be honest not much room to move or sit down if needed. Just disappointed with the value for money.
