The official route, jerseys and sponsors for the fourth edition of the UAE Tour have been announced. The UAE Tour race organisers, Abu Dhabi Sports Council are pleased to confirm that this year’s edition of the race will feature four sprinters’ stages, two mountain stages best suited to the peloton’s climbers and a 9km long, high-speed individual time trial.

The one and only WorldTour race in the Middle East, the UAE Tour, is set to kick-start the 2022 UCI WorldTour calendar with 1081km of racing across seven stages from 20 to 26 February. The race, which crosses a diverse mix of landscapes, will feature a significant elevation gain of 3500m, almost all of which is concentrated in Stages 4 and 7.

Now in its fourth edition, this year’s tour coincides with another significant event for the Emirates - Expo 2020 Dubai - the first World Expo ever hosted in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia (MEASA) region taking place 1 October 2021 to 31 March 2022 and that will host the start of Stage 6.

Full stage descriptions and sponsors for the 2022 UAE Tour are listed below.

Stage 1 – Al Ain Water Stage - Madinat Zayed (185km)

A stage taking place entirely in the desert. It’s beginning and finale follow approximately 45km of straight roads. Once in Liwa, the route enters a zone of dunes that make up the bulk of the stage's elevation. A series of ups and downs will be covered twice to take the riders to Moreeb Dune. After passing Liwa for the second time, the route follows the same way back to Madinat Zayed.

A perfectly straight city route. It runs along wide, straight avenues with no obstacles whatsoever. Final stretch on asphalt.

Stage 2 – International Holding Company Stage - Hudayriyat Island - Abu Dhabi Breakwater (173km)

A stage around the city of Abu Dhabi. It departs from Hudayriyat Island and heads to Yas Island and then to Al Raha, passing by the Great Mosque. The route returns first through the Al Wathba Camel Track and then Khalifa City to converge again on Yas Marina and head to Saadiyat Island. The riders then take the Corniche to Abu Dhabi Breakwater for a sprint finish.

The final 5km remains on a wide road with sweeping bends leading to the tarmac finish line.

Stage 3 – G42 Stage presented by Tissot - Ajman ITT (9km)

An individual time trial entirely in Ajman that features a very fast course characterised only by a U-turn about halfway along the route. The road is perfectly flat and wide with wide radius turns.

Wide turns, wide road, perfect pavement. Asphalt finish line.

Stage 4 – Burjeel Medical City Stage - Fujairah Fort - Jebel Jais (181km)

This is the first of two most likely decisive mountain stages in the UAE Tour. It is divided into two distinctly different parts: the first being an undulating approach to the final mountain through the desert and the second being the last 20km or so of continuous climbing to the finish. Departure is from Fujairah, crossing the desert areas on the edge of the Hajar Mountains towards Ras-al-Khaimah, whose capital city is not crossed by the race, which heads directly towards Jebel Jais Mountain. The stage’s final climb is around 20km in length at an almost constant 5%, with slightly steeper gradients of around 7% in the last 2km.

A final climb which winds along hairpin bends on a very wide roadway. Gradients remain mainly around 4/5% in the climb’s first part and 5/7% in its second with a peak of 9% 2 km from the finish. Tarmac finishing straight.

Stage 5 -  Marjan Stage - Ras al Khaimah Corniche – Al Marjan Island (182km)

The stage starts in Ras-al-Khaimah with a desert departure at the foot of Jebel Jais. It then heads to Umm al Quwain and north across the desert again to almost reach Ras al Khaimah before heading to Marjan Island for the final sprint. The entire route takes place on wide, well-paved and essentially straight roads through the desert where wind and sometimes sand can affect the peloton.

Final stretch on a wide, slightly curved road. Arrival on tarmac.

Stage 6 - Expo 2020 Dubai Stage – Expo 2020 Dubai – Expo 2020 Dubai (180km)

The city stage of Dubai, departing from Expo 2020 Dubai. The first part of the stages takes place in the desert, touching familiar locations: Dubai Sports City, Al Qudra Cycletrack and the Silicon Oasis, until returning to the city at Meydan racecourse. Crossing the city, the riders will then reach Jumeirah Road, Palm Jumeirah and the Jumeirah Islands before returning to Expo 2020 Dubai. The entire route takes place entirely on very wide roads, essentially straight, interspersed with large and well-paved roundabouts. The riders may encounter some sand in case of wind during the desert sections.

Final stretch along a wide, slightly curved road. Arrival on asphalt.

Stage 7 – Mubadala Stage - Al Jahili Fort - Jebel Hafeet (148km)

This is the classic mountain stage of the UAE Tour. The first part of the stage follows the usual route around Al Ain, passing many of its well-known sights (Al Ain Zoo, Al Qattara, Al Hili, Al Ain Oasis) before returning after a long desert loop to Green Mubazzarah where the closing 10km climb up Jebel Hafeet is the final ‘judge’ of the race.

A final climb which winds along wide hairpin bends on a 3-lane roadway. Gradients are mostly around 8-9% with a peak of 11% 3km from the finish. There is a very short descent in the last km before the last ramp (all on asphalt).

1.5km to go

102km to go, 110km to go, 119km to go, 125km to go, 136km to go.

Hello and welcome to our live coverage of the second stage of the UAE Tour, another pan flat stage and likely to be another sprint showdown.

We're already underway on stage 2 with 40 kilometres of racing done.

2:50 between the breakaway and peloton at the moment.

The pace is high – almost 60kph at the back of the peloton – and it looks windy.

The peloton is strung out at the moment due to the high speeds. You can see the sand blowing across the road.

We have three men in the break today – all from Gazprom-Rusvelo. Dmitry Strakhov and Pavel Kochetkov are back out there again and they're joined by Michael Kukrle.

66kph reported at the head of the peloton now. Groupama-FDJ, Ineos Grenadiers, EF-EasyPost, BikeExchange-Jayco among the teams up front.

A split is starting towards the front! Around 30 riders have a small gap on the lined out remainder of the peloton.

The groups are back together now. The front of the peloton is more spread across the road but the majority behind are lined out almost in single file.

Three men in the break for Gazprom-Rusvelo but they're all in different jerseys today.

Kukrle is the Czech national champion, Strakhov is in the black intermediate sprints jersey, and Kochetkov is in the regular team jersey.

2:10 between break and peloton now. Ineos Grenadiers are still pulling at the front.

A look at today's stage map, which sees the riders take a circuitous route around Abu Dhabi.

The exposed latter part of the day could be even more dangerous in terms of the wind.

UAE Tour 2022 stage 2 map

The peloton are still flying along at the moment but no signs of a split.

1:30 to the break.

The day's first intermediate sprint at the Wathba Camel Track is coming up soon. Strakhov should take it uncontested, though.

A small group is off the front of the peloton now. Riders are off the back as well.

Everything lined out in between as the wind plays a role once again.

Strakhov leads Kukrle and Kochetkov over the intermediate sprint point and extends his lead in that classification.

1:05 back and the group of six attackers is back in the peloton.

EF and Ineos up front in the peloton as things calm down again.

1:10 between break and peloton.

Strakhov is way out in front in the intermediate sprint classification now, having won all three in the race so far. He has 24 points to Alessandro Tonelli's 10 points.

Flags are showing how the strong winds are blowing across the road, but the peloton is calm for now. The gap is back up to 1:30.

Now the gap is going up steadily again as the peloton knocks the pace off a bit more. 1:55 and rising.

A couple of nice shots of the peloton from early on in today's stage.

Back up to 2:50 now and there's no one team in charge at the head of the peloton at the moment.

Ineos Grenadiers lead the peloton for now.

It's not quiet for long – now Jumbo-Visma have taken to the front and have upped the pace. The gap goes down to 1:50.

No big changes in the peloton so far, aside from bringing the breakaway's advantage down by around 40 seconds.

EF-EasyPost pulling at the front now.

Now it's calm again in the peloton and the gap is back up to 1:55.

It has been a stop-start race so far for the peloton. Just not windy enough to do major damage just yet.

Here's a look at our breakaway riders today – Strakhov at the front with Kukrle and Kochetkov behind him.

Not a whole lot going on at the moment, a phrase which might be seen a few more times during this week.

Gazprom-Rusvelo's Michael Vacek is out in front of the peloton at the moment after grabbing a bidon and musette for lunch.

It's not really a surprise that Gazprom-Rusvelo have been so active during this race so far with two in the break yesterday and three today.

This is the first RCS Sport-organised race of 2022 and the Giro d'Italia organisers have three wildcard spots available for their May Grand Tour after Arkéa-Samsic gave up their spot .

Alpecin-Fenix are automatically invited, while Italian squads Bardiani-CSF-Faizanè, Drone Hopper-Androni and Eolo-Kometa are favourites to take the three remaining places. Gazprom-Rusvelo – who took part in the 2016 and 2017 races – are keen to go again, though.

3:25 between the break and peloton at the moment.

The dark jerseys of Alpecin-Fenix, Movistar, and Ineos Grenadiers lead the peloton.

We've just seen this tweet showing some pushing in the peloton during yesterday's stage.

It looks like Bahrain Victorious' 44 Jonathan Milan shoving an AG2R Citroën rider and almost causing a mass pileup in the middle of the peloton. Not good at all.

If the commissaires had spotted that, then that would surely be an infringement of of the UCI regulations ( Section XII, 2.12.007, 8.2 ) – 'Assault, intimidation, insults, threats, improper conduct (including pulling the jersey or saddle of another rider, blow with the helmet, knee, elbow, shoulder, foot or hand, etc.), or behaviour that is indecent or that endangers others'.

Punishments for doing that include a fine of CHF200-2,000, a 10-100-UCI point deduction, and possible disqualification "in cases of repeated infringement or aggravating circumstances or if an infringement offers an advantage".

#Replay 🎥 / #UAETour 🇦🇪Allez hop, exclusion. Faut être malade pour réagir comme ça dans un peloton. 😡pic.twitter.com/zKet1wlrVF February 20, 2022

Back to today's stage and the gap is a stable 1:40 at the moment. The peloton is all together.

It's lined out in the peloton once again now. EF-EasyPost and Alpecin-Fenix at the front.

One detail on the finish of Sunday's opening stage here at the UAE Tour...

Yesterday the last 4km were done in 3'54" with the tailwind. Still, we were 10" slower than the italians at team pursuit on track. With standing start.Just saying February 21, 2022

Under a minute for the breakaway trio now. The second intermediate sprint at the Yas Marina motor racing circuit is under 20 kilometres away.

And now it's just over a minute. Let's just say it's hovering at around the minute mark for now.

I guess it's a decent time to look back at yesterday's opening stage in Madinat Zayed.

Alpecin-Fenix's Jasper Philipsen took the win just ahead of Bora-Hansgrohe's Sam Bennett and Ineos Grenadiers' Elia Viviani after a messy sprint finish which saw various teams struggle for control.

The Belgian sprinted down the barriers past UAE Team Emirates' Pascal Ackermann while QuickStep-AlphaVinyl's Mark Cavendish went the other way and got blocked out by his fellow sprinters. BikeExchange-Jayco's Dylan Groenewegen felt Philipsen had unfairly blocked him out in the closing metres, but there was no deviation case to answer for Philipsen.

Philipsen will once again have a swathe of rivals to beat in today's nailed-on sprint finish.

As well as Cavendish, Groenewegen, Bennett, Ackermann and Viviani, there's Arnaud Démare (Groupama-FDJ), Max Kanter (Movistar), Olav Kooij (Jumbo-Visma), Rudy Barbier (Israel-Premier Tech), Marijn van den Berg (EF-EasyPost), Marc Sarreau (Groupama-FDJ), Emils Liepinš (Trek-Segafredo), Sacha Modolo (Bardiani-CSF-Faizanè) and more...

Two minutes for the breakaway now. Still the three Gazprom-Rusvelo riders out front.

We're into the final 50km of the stage and there's no change in the situation.

Still the three men out front as Alpecin-Fenix and Movistar lead the peloton. 1:35 between them.

Alpecin-Fenix are obviously riding for Philipsen here. Movistar will be working on behalf of new signing Kanter, who was seventh yesterday. The 24-year-old former DSM rider is looking for his first career win.

Ineos Grenadier's neo-pro Luke Plapp is enjoying the experience at his WorldTour debut.

The riders are heading towards the Yas Marina motor racing circuit now. The day's second intermediate sprint awaits.

We've just passed three hours of racing.

The riders are back in the city now after a long spell skirting around it in the desert.

After the intermediate sprint, the riders will take the Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Highway (catchy!) across Al Jubail Island and Saadiyat Island before heading to the main island of Abu Dhabi and finishing on the marina.

To nobody's surprise, Dmitry Strakhov took another eight points at the intermediate sprint. That's 32 for him so far.

Meanwhile, Clément Davy (Groupama-FDJ) takes a spill in the peloton and gets a bike change.

Strakhov's 32 points mean he's 22 points clear in the black jersey race. His teammate Michael Kukrle is second on 10 points, while Bardiani-CSF-Faizanè rider Alessandro Tonelli is also on 10 points.

Alpecin-Fenix and Movistar continue at the head of the peloton.

Another shot of the peloton from earlier on today.

Just 40 seconds for the breakaway now. The Gazprom-Rusvelo trio realistically have nothing left to fight for today.

Kukrle has already dropped back to the peloton and now the breakaway is over for Strakhov and Kochetkov, too. All together with 36 kilometres to go.

Strakhov stops to take a nature break at the side of the road as he's caught. Meanwhile the action has slowed right up with the riders battling into a headwind.

The peloton are on the four-lane highway heading to the finish now. We could see the wind have an effect on the run-in to the line on these exposed roads.

Slow going at the moment. Like yesterday, it's looking like another dull period of racing between the break getting caught and the final run to the sprint finish.

Groupama-FDJ lead the peloton at the moment.

The peloton are heading straight into the wind blowing off the Gulf at the moment, but they will turn left on the way to the finish. From then, they'll be buffeted by the wind from the right-hand side of the road.

Ganna and Viviani jump out front of the peloton, maybe just to liven up this run-in a little.

The average speed for the past half hour has been something like 25kph...

Race leader Jasper Philipsen having fun in the peloton on this deathly slow headwind run. He just hopped off the bike and ran alongside it for a few seconds.

Groupama-FDJ continue at the head of the peloton.

Now the riders take a turn off the highway and away from the headwind.

FDJ and Bora share the front as the peloton heads west towards the finish.

EF-EasyPost are also up at the front.

The peloton is bunched up rather than strung here. The speed is around 46kph.

We're waiting to see how the wind affects the finale. The riders are fairly well sheltered right now, though.

Some road furniture causing problems at the rear of the peloton. Still all together as UAE Team Emirates take the front.

Back onto the highway now. Bora-Hansgrohe and Groupama-FDJ on the front.

It doesn't look like the wind is going to have much affect on the final kilometres today.

A rear wheel change for Israel-Premier Tech sprinter Rudy Barbier.

Now QuickStep-AlphaVinyl move to the front.

Movistar sprinter Max Kanter has taken a new bike and is chasing back on.

QuickStep, Ineos, FDJ trains up front as EF move up.

The peloton splits across the road with various lead out trains leading the way.

Now it's Bahrain at the front.

Kanter is close to the back of the peloton but he's used a lot of energy getting through the cars.

Groupama-FDJ's train is up there alongside Bahrain Victorious and Ineos Grenadiers.

Movistar and DSM grouped at the rear of the peloton at the moment.

UAE Team Emirates jump up to the front. The teams are battling for position on this run down the final right-hand turn onto the finishing straight at 1.5 kilometres to go.

Movistar represented at the front now as well. Ineos Grenadiers and Groupama-FDJ still up there.

Basically, once again it's a mixture of teams trying to get top positioning ahead of the sprint. No one sprint train is in control.

55kph speed here. Just over a kilometre to go until the turn.

Now BikeExchange-Jayco mass on the front on the right-hand side of the road. Bora-Hansgrohe are with them, Jumbo-Visma just behind.

Israel-Premier Tech on the left.

The peloton is once again split in two competing trains on either side of the road.

No major issues as the riders take the right-hand turn. BikeExchange on the front.

Bora, QuickStep take over under the flamme rouge.

Now Groupama-FDJ come back to the front. EF too.

FDJ have the lead out here.

Bora and Bennett just behind them.

QuickStep and Philipsen come up!

It's Cavendish vs Philipsen in the closing metres!

Cavendish might just had edged that one after a very long sprint.

He's celebrating with his teammates. It looks like it's a win for Cavendish.

Groupama-FDJ took control with three riders on the lead-in but they were swamped as the sprint started. Philipsen and Cavendish came up the right-hand side of the road, while Démare was trapped behind Bennett and his lead out man.

The Irishman never got his sprint going as he had to adjust when Ackermann went past.

Ackermann grabbed third just ahead of Olav Kooij.

Here's Cavendish celebrating his victory today.

Today's top 10...

And the top 10 on GC. Philipsen retains the race lead...

Here's what Cavendish had to say after the finish...

"I'm just happy, you know? I knew we could win here but more so how the team worked today. A third of the team here are first year professionals and this is the first or second race of their career. Seeing how they rode today they were like seasoned professionals, just after one day of talking how we didn't get it right yesterday.

"The job was to get me to the final as fresh as possible and they did that. Fortunately they did it so well that i could go at between 350 to 250 metres into a headwind. That's usually too far to go into a headwind but they delivered it so well that I knew I'd have the energy to keep it to the line.

"I was quite fortunate because I could feel Philipsen coming fast at me. We know he's in good form so I'm happy we could hold him off and take the win."

A look at the dash for the line – Philipsen on the left vs Cavendish on the right.

Most of the top sprinters here finished in the top 10 on the stage but, as with yesterday, a few missed out on the top positions.

Dylan Groenewegen was 14th at the line, while Sam Bennett was 17th and Elia Viviani finished in 24th.

Celebrations after the finish for Cavendish and his QuickStep-AlphaVinyl team.

That's the Belgian squad's 10th win of 2022. They're top of the season win rankings by three wins now.

Philipsen retains leadership of three of the four jersey classifications at the UAE Tour – the red jersey of the GC leader, the green points jersey, and the white young rider's jersey. After another day in the breakaway, Dmitry Strakhov stays in the lead of the intermediate sprint competition and stays in the black jersey.

That's all for our live coverage for today. We'll have more news from the race coming today and live coverage of stage 3 coming tomorrow.

2022 UAE Tour: route, jerseys and sponsors announced

2022 uae tour.

18 Jan 2022

The official route, jerseys and sponsors for the fourth edition of the UAE Tour have been announced. The UAE Tour race organisers, Abu Dhabi Sports Council are pleased to confirm that this year’s edition of the race will feature four sprinters’ stages, two mountain stages best suited to the peloton’s climbers and a 9km long, high-speed individual time trial.

The one and only WorldTour race in the Middle East, the UAE Tour, is set to kick-start the 2022 UCI WorldTour calendar with 1058km of racing across seven stages from 20 to 26 February.

Syed Basar Shueb, CEO and Managing Director of International Holding Company Said, ‘This is an exciting moment for IHC as we kick off our three-year partnership with Abu Dhabi Sports Council and become part of one of the most prestigious sporting events globally. Undoubtedly, the event represents an excellent platform for promoting the Emirate's passion for sports and its unique territory, and we are thrilled for IHC's name to be part of it, as the Tour's Red Jersey sponsor. Working closely with the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, our objective is to add more value to the Tour, introduce supporting activities around the event, drive more community engagement and promote health and well-being.”

"The new platform madeinitaly.gov.it , its promotion through major sporting events and the nation branding campaign beIT are parts of the 19 new actions of Italian Trade Agency to promote Italian companies at a time of restarting international trade. This collaboration with UAE Tour will help to promote the Made in Italy brand around the world." says Carlo Ferro, President of Italian Trade Agency. "This is how promotion of the Country System must be in collaboration between companies and institutions on international markets. Few sports like cycling attract the attention of consumers around the world to Italy. That' why I'm confident in the results of this important initiative."

Mohamed AlQassem, Executive Director, Nakheel Community Management, said : “Nakheel has supported the UAE Tour since its inception as part of its commitment to hosting and endorsing the world-class, international sporting events in the UAE’s annual calendar. We are delighted to sponsor the White Jersey for the fourth consecutive year, reinforcing our pledge to promote sports, fitness and wellbeing and acknowledge fresh new sporting talent.

“The UAE Tour showcases the UAE’s natural beauty, iconic skyline and world famous developments, and we are honoured that some of our key communities including Palm Jumeirah and Jumeirah Islands will once again be part of this sporting spectacular. We wish the organisers and competitors all the very best for what we are sure will be another great success.”

Hashim Al Hashimi, Business and Projects Manager at Abu Dhabi Airlines, said: "We are delighted to participate in the UAE Tour 2022, where Abu Dhabi Aviation is keeping in mind the support of sports and athletes, and pointed out that Abu Dhabi is witnessing a qualitative shift in the world championships it hosts, stressing that this is a translation of the guidance of good leadership.

Abu Dhabi Aviation’s participation in the UAE Tour is a support for sports activities and events hosted by Abu Dhabi, as well as collaboration in the development vision of the UAE’s sporting events and activities. Abu Dhabi Airlines is also keen to carry out its community duties by supporting and sponsoring major sporting events that contribute to the development of community performance. Spreading the culture of sport to reach a healthier and happier society.

Fabrizio d’Amico, RCS Sports and Events DMCC Chief Operating Officer said , “I would like to start with acknowledging and praising the effort and commitment to the UAE Tour by the leadership of the country, Abu Dhabi Sports Council and all of our stakeholders who have contributed to making the fourth edition of the one and only WorldTour race in the Middle East possible.

For the second consecutive year we have the honour to kick-off the UCI WorldTour calendar. In this year’s edition we have implemented some new changes that will make the route more exciting from a sports and cultural perspective; four sprints, one individual time trial and two climbs will shape the race and give the opportunity to all riders with different characteristics to try and get a win. From a cultural perspective the race will meet the glorious past of the UAE by touching some of the stunning monuments and historical sites of the region and the bright future created through sustainability, mobility and opportunity by starting and finishing in Expo 2020 for stage 6.”

'We're halfway there, now we just need to win the Tour' - UAE Team Emirates' Giro-Tour masterplan

Tadej Pogačar finally closed the door on the 2024 Giro d’Italia after arriving home from Rome with the maglia rosa and the Trofeo Infinito in his suitcase. For a few days at least, there’s no racing, no podium ceremonies, no sponsor obligations and no media access.

Pogačar has a week to personally savour his victory and can enjoy some rest and recovery time in Monte Carlo with his partner Urška Žigart.

He is halfway to potentially creating history and winning the Giro- Tour de France double but he only has to start thinking about the Tour from next Monday, when he joins his UAE Team Emirates squad for an altitude camp in Isola 2000 in the Alps.

While Pogačar switches off, the UAE Team Emirates squad will switch focus, from targeting pink to targeting yellow at the Tour de France. Team manager Mauro Gianetti has overseen the Giro-Tour master plan since last summer, focusing the team’s significant financial and human resources on the huge challenge.

“We’re halfway there, now we just need to win the Tour…” Gianetti said with a smile to Cyclingnews and L'Équipe in Italy, admitting that the challenge of the double does sometimes keep him awake at night.

“It’s a big challenge, we knew that from the outset but our attitude is that if you don't try, you cannot achieve anything. This year we set the Giro-Tour double as a goal and that’s what we're working towards.

“Everything has gone to plan so far and so from Tuesday, we’ll start to focus on the Tour de France and completing the double.”

“Tadej is now at the right age to target the Giro-Tour double. And the design of the Giro d'Italia was perfect too,  definitely not as hard as other recent editions."

"When we saw the route at the 2024 Giro route presentation, we said: ‘Wow! This is the year to try it.”

Gianetti has spent most of May at the Giro d’Italia, offering a quiet, optimistic but respected presence to his riders and staff. He knows every detail of the Giro-Tour masterplan and senses everything is on track.

“So far, everything is good. Tadej has been amazing. As I think everyone has seen in the last three weeks, he’s in incredibly good shape. That’s because he’s worked so hard and so seriously from the beginning of the season.”

Pogačar has changed coaches, lost some upper body muscle and become leaner, and worked more on his core and flexibility to be more comfortable in the saddle. He has matured as an athlete and as a person.

Defeat at the last two editions of the Tour de France hurt and motivated him to look beyond his natural talent so he could target the Giro-Tour double and take on his ‘big-four’ rivals -  Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease A Bike), Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-QuickStep), Primož Roglič (Bora-Hansgrohe) -  and, for that matter, anyone else.

“We let him work quietly at home this winter but in the right way, specifically for the stage races,” Gianetti explained.

"It was obvious that if he raced the Classics again, he’d have to race more and do different types of training. Instead Tadej focused on preparing for stage races and specifically for the Giro and Tour."

“As part of that we’ve seen an evolution in his body, in his numbers. We’re monitoring all his parameters and everything is good, so far even better than our expectations. That has been amazing to see.”

Making history, joining the greats

Gianetti is Swiss and was not a Grand Tour contender during his own career but he understands the special prestige of winning the Giro d’Italia.

Pogačar initially appeared to struggle with all the clamour and excitement of the Italian tifosi and the demands of wearing the maglia rosa . But as his dominance became obvious and victory more certain, he relaxed more..

“All the big champions have won the Giro, from Coppi to Merckx, Hinault and others. The Tour is the Tour but the Giro is also very important and it’s important for Tadej to understand that and to add the Giro to his palmares."

“If you want to be remembered forever in cycling, then you need to win the Giro, you need to wear the pink jersey and be proud of it. Winning the Giro is important for Tadej, for our team and for the whole of the UAE and our project to promote cycling and healthy living."

Giro d’Italia organisers RCS Sport struck a deal with Pogačar and UAE Team Emirates to ensure his presence at the race. Pogačar dominated the race, stealing much of the spotlight but RCS Sport confirmed to Cyclingnews that they are happy with the return on their considerable investment. Pogačar’s victory entertained the Italian tifosi and gave the race far more global visibility.

“We can all see how much the Italians love the Giro but I think we’ve seen how Tadej helps the Giro go worldwide. He’s not just a very strong rider or an incredible rider, he's an international star,” Gianetti said.

“I think the Giro d’Italia is happy to have Tadej as the winner. He committed to winning the races and stages and he did that. We’re all very happy and proud of him.”

"He’s very calm, that’s always one of his secrets. During the first week he perhaps needed to understand how the Giro works and his key role in this year’s race. But he was very relaxed and confident in the team. When Tadej is feeling good, everything is okay.

“To make that happen, all the team and all the staff stayed very focused throughout the race. They all gave 100%, so that Tadej knows that everything is under control. If everything is under control, he is more relaxed and more successful.

“Now we’ve won the Giro d’Italia, we’re ready to take on the Tour de France.”

First Black woman pilot for the U.S. Air Force retires with final flight to New Jersey

WABC logo

NEWARK, New Jersey -- A groundbreaking airline pilot is flying off into the sunset.

Theresa Claiborne retired from United Airlines on Thursday.

She reached heights never seen before as the first Black woman pilot in the history of the United States Air Force, commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1981

Clairborne was also the first Black woman to serve as a command pilot and instructor for the Boeing KC-135Stratotanker during her 7 years on active duty in the Military and 13 years in the Reserves.

For many years she's also served as a mentor to other women of color who want to follow the same path.

"Oh, I guess maybe I did make an impact and that's important because when you put your heart and soul into something and it turns out that people appreciated it and people listened and got something out of it, it makes it all the better," Claiborne said.

Her final flight after 34 years with United was from Lisbon, Portugal to Newark Liberty International Airport.

She logged 23,000 flight hours over her career.
