The Kent Big Weekend – Bigger and Better Than Ever!

Olivia

The largest number of residents and businesses have taken part in this year’s Kent Big Weekend since the start of the pandemic.

visit kent big weekend

Over the weekend of 24 and 25 June, 72 tourism businesses in the county took part – a third more businesses than in 2022 and over 12,500 local residents entered a competitive ballot to win free tickets to local attractions which is more than double the number of entries received compared with 2022.

Well known Kent attractions took part in the initiative such as Hever Castle and Gardens, The Historic Dockyard Chatham, Dreamland Margate, Penshurst Place and Gardens but also smaller businesses such as the Dickens House Museum and Anno Distillers.

Deirdre Wells OBE, CEO of Visit Kent said: “Although we are not quite up to the level of businesses that took part in The Kent Big Weekend before the pandemic – we are definitely getting there.   These statistics demonstrate that businesses are feeling much more confident about the future compared to last year and we are very grateful to all those that took part and provided tickets for local residents.  We are also grateful to Kent County Council for enabling free bus travel during the weekend which will help to meet a key aim of their plan to improve bus services across the county by raising awareness of how accessible, environmentally friendly and easy travelling by bus can be around Kent.”

Roger Gough, Leader of Kent County Council said: “We are blessed in Kent to have a fantastic variety of attractions across the county but sometimes we all forget what we have on our doorstep including me!  I am very supportive of The Big Weekend as it is a great initiative to help local residents to have a low cost and fun day out at a time when we know that budgets are very tight for a lot of people and it also helps to support and raise awareness of our local tourism and hospitality industry who are still recovering from the impact of the pandemic.”

The idea for The Big Weekend started in Kent in 2006 and came from a desire to make preparations for its welcome in the run up to The Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012.  Our research told us that local residents hosting visiting friends and family in Kent were surprisingly ill-informed about what was on their own doorstep.  We needed to turn residents into better informed advocates and so The Big Weekend was born.  Before the pandemic, the county welcomed over 65 million visitors each year, contributing nearly £4 billion to the local economy and a key contributing factor has been the engagement of the friends and family market.

Weekend Trips

Mountain adventures and peak experiences.

A visit to Mount Rainier from Kent makes for a perfect day trip, and there are some fun stops along the way if you want to pack in even more adventure. Spend day two hiking a summit closer to basecamp.

Day 1: Take the road to Paradise at Mount Rainier National Park

  • Make a stop at  Northwest Trek  wildlife and adventure park. A tram tour features more than 200 North American animals in their natural habitat. Young ones will love the nature-inspired Kids Trek playground. Adventurers will like the zip-line challenge courses.
  • Stop at historic Elbe for a burger and homemade shake from  Scale Burgers . Hop aboard the  Mount Rainier Railroad  for a fun, friendly and scenic ride through the Mount Rainier foothills.
  • The picturesque drive to the Paradise area of Mount Rainier offers switch-backing roads and peak views and leads you to the base of the 14,411-foot mountain. Stop in at the  Henry M. Jackson Visitor Center  (open weekends and holidays in the winter and daily May through early October) to find out what Mount Rainier is all about and learn more about what to do and see. Check ahead to confirm road and facility status.  Learn more  about how to make the most of your Mount Rainier visit.
  • Refuel (and fuel up for tomorrow’s adventure) with some sauce-covered carbs from  Mama Stortini’s Restaurant and Bar  at  Kent Station .

Day 2: Hit the trail to Poo Poo Point in Issaquah

  • Plan ahead and pack a lunch for the trail. The folks at  Wild Wheat Bakery Café and Restaurant  make their own baked goods and cold smoked lox.
  • A 30-minute drive from Kent will land you at the Issaquah Alps, a popular hiking and recreation destination. If you’re looking for incline and views at the top, take the trek to  Poo Poo Point , a knoll on the shoulder of West Tiger Mountain. Don’t let the name worry you. It refers to the steam whistle sounds heard throughout the Tiger Mountain area in early logging days.

A Sports-packed Weekend With Champions

Admit it. You have a giant foam finger in the trunk of your car. You’re a fan, and proud of it. Kent is the perfect place to be if you want to catch live sports action. Make a weekend of it with Kent’s own '22-'23 Western Hockey League champion Seattle Thunderbirds ice hockey team.

Day 1: Seattle Thunderbirds at Kent’s accesso ShoWare Center

Regular season September–March

  • Your first night of sports action happens in the heart of downtown Kent. The accesso ShoWare Center offers up an intimate 6,500-seat arena that puts you close to every minute of the action. Parking is always free and plentiful.
  • Arrive early to take advantage of pregame happy hour specials. You’ll have lots of food and drink options to choose from.
  • Spend some of the money you’ve saved on parking and refreshments to buy soft foam pucks for the Chuck-a-Puck competition. Between the second and third periods, fans simultaneously hurl pucks onto the ice for a chance to win a big-money prize. You’ll want to be a part of the chaos.
  • After the Birds leave the ice, have a nightcap and light bite at  Kent Station .  Duke’s Seafood ,  Mama Stortini’s Restaurant and Bar ,  Agave Cocina and Cantina  and  Ram Restaurant and Brewery  offer late-night happy hour specials.

Day 2: Seattle Sounders at Seattle’s CenturyLink Field

Regular season March–October

  • Kent is close to the Sounders’ home turf in Seattle, so leave your car at  Kent Station  and skip the huge parking tab and hassle of driving downtown.  Sound Transit  runs game trains for many daytime weekend matches. Otherwise, catch a bus from Kent to downtown Seattle or Uber your way to nearby  Tukwila International Boulevard Station to hop on the Link light rail . Grab a treat for the trek at  Cow Chip Cookies .
  • In Seattle, begin your Sounder experience with some pub grub from  Fuel Sports Eats & Beats , the official team bar. Sounders co-owner and TV star Drew Carey sometimes shows up and buys a round for the house.
  • An hour before kickoff, head to nearby Occidental Park to join the  March to the Match , an American sports tradition.
  • Scarves up! Lumen Field will be electric when Washington native & MLS star Jordan Morris and the Seattle Sounders take the pitch.
  • Toast the win back in Kent at  JP’s Taproom and Grill . They have a great dinner menu and plenty of Northwest wine and beer on tap.

Experience Seattle

There’s so much to discover, experience and explore in Seattle. Nearby Kent is a great place to stay for day tripping to the big city, and offers transportation options to make exploring even easier.

Day 1: Iconic Seattle: A needle, a market and a whole lot more

  • The  Sound Transit center at  Kent Station  offers carefree and carless access to downtown Seattle, including weekday train service. Grab coffee and a breakfast treat at  Dilettante Mocha Café  before you start your Seattle adventure.
  • Bus, train or light rail will get you close to  Westlake Center , three levels of shops and dining. Head to the top floor to board the  Seattle Center Monorail , your transport to  Seattle Center  and the  Space Needle , Seattle’s most recognizable landmark. Bring cash. The 1960s-era monorail doesn’t accept plastic.
  • On the return trip, visit the flagship  Nordstrom  store before setting out for nearby  Pike Place Market to meander through shops and kiosks offering local produce, arts and loads of fresh seafood. Try one of several restaurants in the Market, or opt for an oyster shot or shrimp cocktail from one of the vendors.
  • From the Market, you’re steps from Seattle’s Waterfront, which could easily warrant a separate day trip. The  Seattle Great Wheel  offers a great vantage point to take in views. Nearby  Seattle Aquarium  is a favorite family destination.
  • Make your way to  Pioneer Square , Seattle’s historic birthplace. Plan to spend a little time at  Smith Tower , the city’s original skyscraper. Ride the manually operated Otis elevator to the renovated observatory and bar where you can enjoy 360-degree views, locally inspired bites and Prohibition-era cocktails. But save room for a true farm-to-bottle experience as you end the evening in Kent. The fruit-forward liqueurs from  Sidetrack Distillery are the dessert you deserve. Tastings are by appointment only.

Day 2: The day is all about flight…from a world-famous museum to acclaimed NW brews

  • A visit to  The Museum of Flight  and the Georgetown neighborhood means you’ve got a big day ahead of you. Start off with a hearty breakfast from  Maggie's on Meeker , a Kent hometown favorite, before making the 20-minute drive to Boeing Field.
  • The Museum of Flight has more than 160 aircraft and space vehicles, the original Boeing Aircraft factory, flight simulators, and dozens of interactive exhibits. In other words, there’s a whole lot to experience here, so do a little pre-planning  to make the most of your visit.
  • After your visit, you’ll be ready for a little R&R, so make your way to nearby Georgetown to sample some of Seattle’s notable craft beers. This hip Seattle urban burb is home to several brewing companies, including Lower Case Brewing , Machine House Brewing  and  Georgetown Brewing . You’ve also got lots of food options, from vegan comfort food ( Georgetown Liquor Company ) to upscale Northwest fare ( The Corson Building ). Don’t miss the  Georgetown Trailer Park Mall , where artisans sell their goods inside Airstream trailers. (Really.)
  • End your busy day with a sampler at Kent’s  Airways Brewing . The name itself is worth a visit on your day of flights.

visit kent big weekend

How many tickets can I apply for?

You can apply for prizes at as many attractions as you like! Each prize is normally valid for two people (please note that for some attractions, different numbers of people may be covered by each ticket, so please check carefully), and some attractions have multiple ticket offers, so you can apply for each type of ticket available. You will not be able to apply for the same type of ticket multiple times, but there’s so much to try you’ll be spoilt for choice! The more attractions you apply for, the more chance you have of winning a day out. You never know which tickets you will win, as the tickets are all allocated at random to winners, so make sure you apply for any prizes you like the look of – and don’t be afraid to try something new!

How are tickets allocated?

At midnight on Monday 12th June, the website will close for applications. A ballot will then be drawn, randomly selecting winners from all those who have applied. If you are successful for one attraction, you will be removed from the ballot for any other attractions you have applied for.  You can only win one prize (some family tickets are available) per household, in order to give as many people as possible an opportunity to enjoy the Kent Big Weekend.

We wish you the best of luck!!!!!

Saratov, Russia

Saratov, Russia

Tours, Attractions and Things To Do in Saratov

Full-flowing Volga gave birth to many cities. One of these cities is Saratov, a former center of the largest Russian province, a city of merchants, gold miners and first Russian manufacturers. Saratov is still has the charm of those times. Old farmsteads, bank buildings, retail and apartment houses – all that is a part of Saratov’s history, which are proudly demonstrated to numerous tourists now.

People go to Saratov not to find adventures. This region is deprived of high dangerous mountain hills, swift rivers, sea coasts, promising an exciting extreme leisure. Instead one can find here mixed forests, groves, woods, deserts and steppes. The mixed flora and fauna of Asia and Europe has created here unseen picturesque scenes. There are 124 monuments of nature here.

The natural diversity of Saratov region creates favorable conditions for active recreation both in summer and in winter. In winter, ski routes are ready for fans of skiing sport whereas during warm seasons fishing, hunting, active water recreation, namely rowing and canoeing, sailing, yachting, boat, motor boat and water scooter trips are available for toursists.

Saratov is located on the right bank of Volga, and surrounded on three sides with not high mountains. The city’s name originated from Tatar word “sara tau” – “yellow mountain”. The main trade routes from the Black Sea, Caucasus, Persia, Khorezm, and the Urals and, of course, from Russia ran across Saratov Povolj’e (Volga Region).

According to one of the versions, the city was established in 1584-1589 years approximately, on the place of a Tatar village, where Saratovka river fell into. Another version says that the city was found in 1590, and it was built as a guard point on the Volga way. The exact location of the first settlement was not established.

The town was burned down in 1613 year, and in 1674 was moved to the right bank of Volga River, that is to say, to its present position. Gradually Saratov became famous as a merchant city. That time people were engaged in pottery, selling of fish, salt and bread. The manufacturing production was well-developed. And Saratov became a capital of the Volga Region. It was the 3rd largest city after Moscow and Petersburg among the cities of Russia.

In 1722 Peter I visited this city on his way to Persia as well. In 1781 a famous rebel Emel’yan Pugachev which took the decision to occupy the city, entered Saratov. Those historical facts were described in the novel “The Captain's Daughter” by A.S. Pushkin. From a shabby town into which Saratov turned after Pugachev’s invasion, it became soon a rich merchant city and remained to be the largest cities of the Volga Region till 20-ies of XX century. In USSR Saratov was a closed city. There were several big enterprises of defense industry, particularly, the Saratov aviation plant.

Saratov is a motherland of many famous Russian figures. Nikolay Chernyshevskoy – Russian publicist, writer and literary critic, was born in Saratov. Such actors as Sergey Phillipov, Oleg Tabakov and Evgeniy Mironov were born here.

Many old farmsteads and hundreds of architecture monuments are preserved in Saratov Region. The cultural tourist complex “The Old City of Uvek”, which is situated on the place of an ancient settlement and whose prosperity period fell to the 12th century is not far from Saratov.

Pint-sized bottles of wine will be allowed on UK shelves from autumn under new post-Brexit trade rules - although doubts have been raised over their demand.

Seven changes to pre-packaged wine sizes are due to come into force on 19 September.

The move to introduce the 568ml size of wine, to sit alongside 200ml and 500ml measures already available, was announced in December and hailed by ministers as a Brexit "freedom".

Pint bottles of Champagne were sold in the UK before Britain joined the European Common Market and were on shelves until 1973.

JD Sports has told head office staff they must return to the office at least four days a week .

The new amendment to the hybrid working policy will be effective from 1 July and will impact employees at the retail chain's head office in Bury, Retail Gazette reports.

However, the chain will still allow flexibly depending on individual roles.

Pubs could stay open late during the Euros this summer, according to The Sun .

Home Secretary James Cleverly hinted he was looking into extending pub opening hours for the tournament on The Sun show Never Mind The Ballots.

He said: "I will certainly look into it."

We've been bringing you news of plenty of bank switch deals offering free cash these past few months, but Virgin Money has a different kind of incentive for switchers - a 12% interest rate.

People who switch to its M Account, M Plus Account or Club M Account will be able to get bonus interest rates of 10% gross/10.47% AER (fixed).

This is on top of the 2% gross/2.02% AER (variable) interest rate already offered on current account balances up to £1,000 - meaning customers can get an interest rate of 12%.

No other savings accounts offer interest rates this high, and the bonus applies for a year.

TikTok will restore millions of songs to its app after settling a royalty dispute with Universal Music Group.

Users had been unable to make videos featuring songs from the likes of Billie Eilish and Ariana Grande due to a row over how much TikTok was paying.

The fight had led to Universal withdrawing music from some of the world's most famous singers.

The dispute appears to have been settled as the companies announced "improved remuneration" for artists.

More than 10,500 black cab drivers in London have launched a £250m legal case against Uber.

They accuse the app of breaking the capital's taxi booking rules and deliberately misleading authorities to secure a licence.

Transport for London (TfL) rules state drivers cannot take bookings directly from customers and must instead use a centralised system.

The drivers, who are being advised by law firm Mishcon de Reya, argue they have faced unfair competition from Uber and that it knowingly broke these rules.

Uber has denied these allegations and said the claims are unfounded.

The company has faced numerous challenges in London, including refusals from TfL to renew its licence which were later successfully appealed.

Billie Eilish fans are complaining about "outrageous" ticket prices for her Hit Me Hard and Soft tour.

The 22-year-old singer unveiled an 81-date tour programme this week, sending fans rushing to secure tickets.

But some expressed disbelief on social media at the prices.

"I know I moan about this all the time, but look at the price of Billie Eilish tickets," one fan called Marianne wrote on X, sharing a screenshot of seated tickets priced at £398.50.

"Something seriously needs to be done about ticket prices, it's f*****g outrageous!"

Another complained they had paid less for Taylor Swift's Eras Tour, which was also criticised for high ticket prices.

A fan called Liv tagged Eilish, Live Nation and Ticketmaster, writing: "Are you ok? £145 for standing tickets is atrocious."

Thousands of people who receive government benefits, including Universal Credit, will be paid as early as tomorrow.

This is because there's a bank holiday coming up on 6 May which will affect benefits paid by both the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and HMRC (they don't pay benefits on bank holidays).

A statement on the government website reads: "If your payment date is on a weekend or a bank holiday you'll usually be paid on the working day before. This may be different for tax credits and child benefit."

Here are the 11 different government benefits that are expected to be paid early:

  • Universal credit;
  • State Pension;
  • Pension Credit;
  • Disability Living Allowance;
  • Attendance Allowance;
  • Carer's Allowance;
  • Child Benefit;
  • Income Support;
  • Jobseekers Allowance;
  • Personal Independence Payment;
  • Tax credits (such as Working Tax Credit)

Will your benefit payment change?

No, you'll be paid the same amount you usually receive.

Benefits are usually paid straight into your bank, building society or credit account.

Goldman Sachs is removing a cap on bonuses for London-based staff, paving the way for it to resume making multimillion pound payouts to its best-performing traders and dealmakers.

Sky News can exclusively reveal the Wall Street banking giant notified its UK employees today that it had decided to abolish the existing pay ratio imposed under European Union rules and which the government recently decided to scrap.

In a video message to staff, Richard Gnodde, chief executive of Goldman Sachs International, which comprises its operations outside the US, said it had decided to bring its remuneration policy in Britain in line with its operations elsewhere in the world.

"We are a global firm and to the extent possible we adopt a consistent global approach across everything we do," Mr Gnodde said in the message, which has been relayed to Sky News.

"The bonus cap rules were an important factor preventing us from being consistent in the area of compensation."

Aldi's market share has fallen - as people seemingly head back to traditional supermarkets for their shopping.

Aldi's share of the grocery market slipped from 10.8% to 10.4% in the 12 weeks to 20 April.

NIQ data shows sales rose just 1.3% in the period - for Morrisons it was 4.4%, Tesco 5.8% and Sainsbury's 6.6%.

Asda was the laggard with sales falling 0.9%.

Ocado is the fastest growing retailer with sales up 12%.

Aldi's rival discounter, Lidl, saw sales surge 9.5%, bumping its market share up to 8.2%. Media campaigns highlighting new ranges helped, NIQ said.

A Santander online outage is affecting thousands of UK customers.

Over 2,000 reports have been made on Downdetector - indicting the issue is widespread.

Customers have been met with messages like this...

Santander wrote on X: "We are aware some customers are experiencing issues accessing online services, we apologise for any inconvenience this has caused.

"We're working hard to resolve this as soon as possible."

Following on from our previous post, and the OECD also says the UK will grow more slowly next year than any other major advanced economy.

It puts this down to stealth taxes and high interest rates squeezing the economy.

The organisation, which is based in Paris, downgraded its forecasts for GDP to 0.4% this year and 1% in 2025.

In February, the UK had been in the middle of the rankings with forecast growth of 0.7% this year and 1.2% next.

The OECD pointed to the fact "tax receipts keep rising towards historic highs" - with National Insurance cuts not offsetting the additional burden Britons are feeling due to tax thresholds not rising along with inflation due to a government freeze.

Some good news is expected for UK workers as the OECD said there will be "stronger" wage growth when inflation is factored in against pay.
