China just made it even harder for people in the country to access WhatsApp and Threads

• Apple has removed WhatsApp and Threads from its Chinese app store following a government order.
• WhatsApp has been blocked in China since 2017 and its parent company Meta since 2009.
• Other Western platforms like Gmail, YouTube, Snap, and Spotify have also been censored in China.

Apple removed WhatsApp and Threads from its app store in China after being told to do so by the Chinese government, according to the Wall Street Journal .

China's top internet regulator asked Apple to remove the two apps because of national security concerns.

"We are obligated to follow the laws in the countries where we operate, even when we disagree," an Apple spokesperson told The Journal.

Related stories

The Chinese government has blocked WhatsApp since 2017, while its parent company, Meta, has been blocked since 2009. Other Western media platforms , including Gmail, YouTube, Snapchat, and Spotify, have also been censored in China.

Some users find ways to access these platforms through virtual private networks, but removal from the app store may prevent this.

Apple did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment sent outside normal business hours.

A Meta spokesperson referred BI to Apple for comment.

WhatsApp has over 2 billion users globally, while Instagram Threads, which launched in July, has over 130 million global users, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in February.

China is an important manufacturing and consumer market for Apple. CEO Tim Cook visited the country last month to open a new store in Shanghai and rub elbows with top policymakers. That visit came after iPhone sales dropped earlier this year. And in January, Chinese chipmakers drew up plans to create chip production lines to supply processors to local smartphone makers. The move stands to hurt Apple, which has so far benefited from tight export restrictions.

China's direction to Apple comes as US policymakers debate a ban on TikTok, the popular Chinese app. Some lawmakers are concerned about data harvesting and political influence. The bill would prevent Apple and Google from distributing TikTok's app in their app stores and ban US websites from hosting TikTok.

Certain ground beef products from Greater Omaha Packing Co. may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7, which can cause serious illness. These products are no longer available for purchase, but there's a chance you may have some in your freezer.

Here's what you need to know:

• Products: Ground beef produced on March 28, 2024 with a “Use/Freeze By” date of April 22, 2024 and packaging date of “032824” . See a full list of products here: link removed.
• Look for: Establishment number “EST. 960A” inside the USDA inspection mark.
• Do not eat these products. Throw them away or return them to the store.
• Food service locations: Don't serve these products.

Symptoms of E. coli O157:H7

• Dehydration
• Bloody diarrhea
• Abdominal cramps (2-8 days after exposure)

Serious complication: Hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) can cause:

• Easy bruising
• Decreased urination

Seek immediate medical care if you experience these symptoms.

Microsoft makes it easier to install Windows store apps from the web

Microsoft thinks its new store app installer will make more people install and launch windows apps..

Microsoft is starting to improve the experience of downloading Windows store apps from the web. The software giant has built what it calls an “undocked version of the [Microsoft] Store” that works like a typical executable to install apps from the Microsoft Store. It should cut down on the complexity involved in finding Windows store apps on the web and installing them.

Instead of launching the Microsoft Store and a mini window, now when you download apps from the web version of the Microsoft Store it will download a standalone installer instead. This means you don’t have to click install on the web, then allow Chrome or Edge to open the Microsoft Store, and finally hit install to actually install the app. A lightweight installer will be downloaded instead, which you can launch and install the Microsoft Store app you were looking for.

Microsoft Store developer Rudy Huyn claims this reduces the entire process down to just two clicks, but from my own testing it’s still three clicks to download and install Microsoft Store apps from the web. You click to download, you then click to open this new lightweight installer, and you still have to click install in the prompt that appears. Microsoft appears to have just simplified the process here by removing the prompt to approve the Microsoft Store being opened through Chrome or Edge.

Not all Microsoft Store apps seem to support this new lightweight installer, though. While I was able to download packaged versions of GroupMe and Snapchat, trying to download Discord this way still pushed me into the Microsoft Store instead. The standalone installers also don’t include the full app installer, as this is downloaded during the install process.

Microsoft has tested this new method over the past five months and it claims it has led, on average, to a 12 percent increase in installations and a 54 percent increase in the number of apps launched after install. That’s obviously good news for developers eager for Windows users to install and use their apps, so Microsoft is now expanding this experiment to “more products and markets,” according to Huyn.

The Viking Venus

There truly isn’t anything to add to my five star rating other than to say that I don’t ever give them. It seems as though there is always room for improvement … however, there’s always a first time. The Viking Cruise line gets my highest rating available because they deserve it. Full Stop! From the seemingly 1:1 ratio of staff to guests that allow them to meet every little desire - they go out of the way to make sure that each and every day of your cruise is better than the day before! Staff are smiling and attentive, happy and extremely willing to go any extra mile you’d like (and it is amazing what they can do!) And the food? Specialty restaurants highlighting local fresh ingredients and even opportunities to go shopping with a chef and then a chance to return to the kitchen on the ship and cook alongside -preparing what was just locally purchased. The opportunities for the daily experiences are wonderful and there’s almost always something to find to do at the right fitness level and just full of new and interesting experiences! Brand new ships, younger and talented ( musically) many of the staff also play music in various areas on the ship. Attention has been paid for to every little detail - want something more or different? Just ask:) Do yourself a favor and book a Viking Cruise - you will treasure it’s memories forever

Fabulous Viking cruise in Bermuda

We had an outstanding experience in our first Viking ocean cruise. The ship was magnificent, the stateroom was spacious, great shower, larger balcony, incredible service from crew, interesting lecturers, wonderfully relaxing events, enjoyable musical entertainment, and food was a whole next level. We were very impressed and we are experienced cruisers who have been on many different cruise lines. This was a luxury cruise at a very reasonable price with all the extras included: very enjoyable excursions, afternoon teas with amazing finger sandwiches and delights, etc. They gave us a very memorable week that we truly treasured. We can easily brag on Viking for the cruising experience they provided. Thank you so much.

I love the idea of the app and it worked, but I think they need to make a lot more changes. It seemed super easy to navigate, but I wasn’t able to do a whole lot with it and I’m pretty tech savvy. I tried booking reservations at a specialty restaurant and it only allowed me to book for Saturday & Sunday which both days didn’t really work with our schedule. Went down to the restaurant to ask about reservations for Tuesday & the person at the desk automatically made our reservations. Doesn’t do a good job of showing your schedule days in advance, and don’t bother booking excursions through it because it won’t give you all of the options. It gave me notifications about my excursions every day 30 minutes before the start time, BUT that was pretty much useless because by that time I was already on the tender boat going to the excursion. I did an ocean cruise so not sure if the results would be different with a river cruise.
