Free travel pass help for newly-employed West Midland workers
Passengers in the Black Country with new jobs are being urged to snap up free travel passes on the bus, tram and train.

Transport for West Midlands (TfWM) is working in partnership with public transport operators to offer two four-week tickets free, then a third four-week ticket at a 50 per cent discount on some travel passes under the Workwise scheme.
The initiative was set up to give newly employed workers a helping hand.
Workwise previously offered half price travel for three months on selected West Midlands travel passes. Now the West Midlands Combined Authority and its operators have launched a new offer to help more people into work.
Matthew Savin, aged 22, from Oldbury, has recently joined the authority as a service desk support apprentice.
“The Workwise offer has helped me to get cheaper access to transport links, which allowed me to kickstart my new apprenticeship. I was unemployed for almost six months and the scheme has given me much-needed travel support, making it easier for me to get to work. I’m really looking forward to my new job and the future is bright,” Mr Savin says.
Sandwell Council’s regeneration and growth boss Councillor Iqbal Padda, who attended the launch at West Bromwich Bus Station, said: “We welcome this boost for getting the people of Sandwell back into work, to develop their skills so they can respond to changing business needs and obtain jobs in the growing West Midlands economy.”
West Midlands mayor Andy Street said: “Sadly we know thousands of people have lost their jobs or been put on furlough because of the pandemic, so it’s never been more important to help residents into work.
“There are lots of jobs available now, in sectors such as construction, health and care, and digital, but we know that the cost of travel to work is a major barrier to employment because most people don’t get paid for up to a month after starting their new job.
“That’s why we are offering eight weeks’ worth of free bus, tram and rail travel for people moving into work, plus a half-price ticket for four more weeks - and I would ask all employers to make sure their new staff are aware of this offer.”
Anyone paying an adult fare who lives or works in Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall, Wolverhampton, Birmingham, Coventry and Solihull may be eligible to apply for Workwise.
Apprentices and those who are increasing their weekly hours to 16 or more in their current job could also benefit from the scheme.
Details are on the TfWM website.

Metro joins Workwise scheme to help local people get back to work!
- Published: September 14, 2021
Residents in the West Midlands who have just gained a new job could benefit from free bus, tram and rail travel to work.
Transport for West Midlands (TfWM) has teamed up with local transport operators to offer two four-week tickets free, then a third four-week ticket at a 50% discount from the standard price on selected bus, tram and nnetwork travel passes through the Workwise scheme.
The scheme is aimed at giving newly employed people a helping hand into work.
Previously, Workwise offered half-price travel for three months on selected West Midlands travel passes, and TfWM, which is part of the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA), and its partners have now launched a new offer to help more people into work.
The former scheme had supported nearly 4,900 people over the past four years and in a recent TfWM survey, almost half of those who responded said they wouldn’t have been able to take up their new job without help with their travel costs.
Matthew Savin, aged 22, from Oldbury, has recently joined the WMCA as a service desk support apprentice.
He said: “The Workwise offer has helped me to get cheaper access to transport links, which allowed me to kickstart my new apprenticeship. I was unemployed for almost six months and the scheme has given me much-needed travel support, making it easier for me to get to work. I’m really looking forward to my new job and the future is bright.”
Councillor Iqbal Padda, Sandwell Council’s cabinet member for regeneration and growth, who attended the launch at West Bromwich Bus Station said: “We welcome this boost for getting the people of Sandwell back into work, to develop their skills so they can respond to changing business needs and obtain jobs in the growing West Midlands economy.”
Andy Street, the Mayor of the West Midlands, said: “Sadly we know thousands of people have lost their jobs or been put on furlough because of the pandemic, so it’s never been more important to help residents into work.
“There are lots of jobs available now, in sectors such as construction, health and care, and digital, but we know that the cost of travel to work is a major barrier to employment because most people don’t get paid for up to a month after starting their new job.
“That’s why we are offering eight weeks’ worth of free bus, tram and rail travel for people moving into work, plus a half-price ticket for four more weeks – and I would ask all employers to make sure their new staff are aware of this offer.”
Cllr Ian Ward, leader of Birmingham City Council and WMCA portfolio holder for transport, said: “It’s critical that local people are able to take up the job opportunities they are offered.
“The Workwise scheme is a great example of how TfWM and local transport operators are working together to help residents, especially those on benefits, move into work. In addition, supporting more people to use public transport is part of our wider goal to help the region achieve net zero by 2041.”
Anyone paying an adult fare who lives or works in Birmingham, Coventry, Dudley, Sandwell, Solihull, Walsall or Wolverhampton, and who started a new job after being unemployed, could be eligible to apply for Workwise.
Apprentices and those who are increasing their weekly hours to 16 or more in their current job could also benefit from the scheme.

Award-winning Jobseeker support goes online
Published: Friday 05 Aug 2016
![west midlands travel workwise Award-winning Jobseeker support goes online](https://cloudcdn.wmca.org.uk/wmcaassets/assets/newsroom/2439/wmca-default.png)
Jobseekers in the West Midlands can now access award-winning support anytime, anywhere - with WorkWise Online http://www.networkwestmidlands.com/information-for/jobseekers/ , the first scheme of its kind in the country.
The ground-breaking programme, which offers free public transport tickets and expert journey planning advice, is run by the sustainable travel team at Transport for West Midlands (TfWM), part of the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA).
It is available at http://workwise.networkwestmidlands.com/Home/Step0<http://workwise.networkwestmidlands.com/Home> . Open the ‘Free four week travel pass' tab and click on ‘Apply online'.
WorkWise was introduced in 2013 with the aim of removing travel barriers for people trying to get back into work, linking up with Jobcentre Plus (JCP).
It proved extremely popular and gained nationwide recognition as a best practice way to deliver travel support for unemployed people, capitalising on a particularly effective working partnership with JCP.
Lead member for fair and safe travel on the authority's Transport Delivery Committee, Cllr Judith Rowley, explained the team was keen to move it onto the next level, with an online offer.
Cllr Rowley said: It was the natural next step in the context of today's technology and the sustainable travel team and our IT team in the WMCA have put a lot of effort into developing this online access.
Now it has gone live and West Midlands people can use it anywhere they have internet access.
It speeds up the process and means we can support even more unemployed people in finding, starting and staying in new jobs.
"We are working closely with local JobCentre Plus offices to help promote and spread the word and information is available on the Network West Midlands website
To date the WorkWise free travel offer has helped more than 27,000 people in the West Midlands find and stay in employment and over 12,000 people to attend job interviews.
The Department for Work & Pensions-sponsored special award last year recognised Centro's support for jobseekers via both its WorkWise and Prince's Trust schemes.

Employer success stories
An interior fit-out specialist business in Bromsgrove identified a skills gap within their workforce in the area of Temporary Works and Site Safety.
With one Temporary Works Co-Ordinator for the company covering their active sites across the country, there was a need to increase capacity to better utilise employees' time, reduce travel time for individuals and reduce strain. The business also planned to train employees in carrying out internal site audits to support the site foreman and contracts managers with Site Health & Safety and setup.
Training up staff as a temporary works co-ordinator and introducing extra capacity of Temporary Works Co-Ordinators in the business would allow not only a reduction in the environmental impact but an improvement in the mental health of the workforce. This would also make the company work more efficiently and safely.
The total cost of the training was £7374. CITB approved funding of £5000 towards the training. The business would also be able to claim the grant available on the courses of £1170, reducing the businesses own direct outlay to £1204.

My passion for construction began at an early age. I grew up on a farm and built my first brick wall at age 15. My career pathway started as an Agricultural Apprentice but on completion, decided to leave the milking of cows behind and follow my passion for wood and train as a Cabinet Maker, Upholsterer and Antique Restorer.
Having run my own business and passed on my skills through teaching I became very poorly and had to look at a career change. I became involved with Apprenticeships and Careers Guidance but finally, my opportunity to reconnect with the construction industry presented itself by way of the CITB Marches and Worcestershire Adviser role.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).
Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.
Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).
Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).
UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.
Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
