Complete Guide to Camping on the Whitsunday Islands

Guide to Camping on the Whitsunday Islands

The Whitsundays Islands are one of the most beautiful places we visited during our  three months in Australia . The water is a perfect bright blue and the sand is like flour.

There are two ways to visit the Whitsundays without a private boat – take a day tour or go camping. Camping at the Whitsundays is the perfect way to miss some of the crowds.

Waking up on Whitehaven Beach is a dream. Every day we had the beach to ourselves until the tours came through. We stayed three nights, and it was absolutely perfect. Whitehaven beach camping is the way to go to have a more intimate experience.

When to Go Camping on the Whitsundays

While the beach looks perfect year-round, Queensland gets hit with rain and jellyfish between the months of November and May. It is best to go camping when it is not the wet season. During this time the hot humid days, rain, and jellyfish take over the  tropical north of Queensland.

Which Beaches Have Camping?

Whitsunday Island Camping: Whitehaven Beach

There are three islands that have campsites. Whitsunday Island has six campsites, Hook Island has four campsites, and Henning Island has one campsite. Whitehaven beach is one of the campsites and is a very popular location, so book ahead during holidays and school breaks.

How to Book Whitsunday Island Camping

Camping Whitsundays: Swimming

Scamper is the only company shuttling campers. Campsite permits and boat transportation need to be booked separately. It is important to first book transportation to ensure availability, and then book a permit  online .  Scamper  can be booked by calling 0487 226 737.

Scamper rents out full gear (tent, mattresses, stove, fuel, cutlery, 50L esky, and torchlight) for $60 the first night and $25 each subsequent night. Water and large plastic bins are provided by Scamper for your stay. Ice is available for $5 per bag at the harbor.

Listed below are the prices for round trip transfer in AUD and all prices are in AUD:

Campsite Costs

Camping costs are $6.85 for each adult and $27.40 for a family per night. Families are considered two adults and up to five children under the age of 18. Not a bad price to wake up to these beautiful views. For more information on camping check out the Queensland National Park  website .

Departure and Parking Information

Whitehaven Beach Camping: Kayak

Parking is available at the Shute Harbour Marina. Parking is free, but space is limited so get there early to secure a spot. The departure time depends on the tide and leaves between 8 am and 1 pm.

Renting a Kayak for the Whitsunday Islands

Whitsunday Island Camping: Whitehaven Beach Drone

Located just beside the Scamper office is  Salty Dog Sea Kayaks . They rent open-top kayaks and closed sea kayaks. Open-top kayaks are great for those staying at one campsite, but looking to explore the area and nearby beaches.

If looking for a bigger kayaking adventure, you can rent closed sea kayaks, and book different campsites on different islands, kayaking between each destination.

In addition to kayak rentals, Salty Dog rents camping equipment that is sufficient for travel with sea kayaks (small tent, mattress, stove, fuel, cutlery) for $40 the first night, and $20 each subsequent night. Prices for kayaks are:

Hill Inlet Lookout via Kayak

To see the most popular spot in the Whitsundays, you will have to put your arms to work.  The hill inlet lookout is about five miles from the camping area on Whitehaven beach.  It’s doable in one day, but it’ll be a scorcher.

Bring lots of water, lunch, sunblock, and something to cover your head, arms, and legs. The adventure is definitely worth it to get that amazing view!

Hill Inlet Lookout via Walking

Camping on Whitsunday Island: Hill Inlet

It is possible to walk across to Hill Inlet during low tide. Be careful and time your crossing carefully as you may get stuck out there. Most likely crossing will involve wading through some water.

It’ll definitely be a long day. It took us two hours to walk from the campsite to the end of the sandbar on Whitehaven Beach (4.3 miles).

Tips and Important Things to Know for Whitsunday Island

Camping Whitsundays

  • There is little shade at the campsite.  The sand is so white that the reflection makes it much stronger. Unless lobster red is your favorite color, cover up and wear a lot of sunscreen. A tarp or sun umbrellas can be super helpful.
  • Did I mention the sand is like flour? Although extremely beautiful, you’ll find little mementos of the trip for days, if not weeks later. The sand gets everywhere! Be extra cautious with electronics and food.
  • Speaking of food. Scamper kindly provided plastic storage bins to store food. Always keep food and garbage in the plastic bins. Our neighbors left food out one night and were visited by some very noisy guests.
  • From November to March, it is recommended to wear stinger suits while in the water to protect against jellyfish. These can be rented from Scamper.
  • Water is provided by Scamper. It was enough for cooking and drinking.
  • During the day, hundreds of people visit Whitehaven Beach on day trips. There are boats as well as seaplanes. The beach can get crowded and the seaplanes can be noisy. This is a perfect time to get in a kayak and explore the beaches just around the corner!

Camping At Whitehaven Beach, Whitsundays: Complete Guide

Whitehaven Beach is known as one of the best beaches in Australia and like many places around the world, claims to have the whitest sand known to mankind. The beauty of this beach is that is a bit out of the way, which means it isn’t too busy. Boats drop off tourists for day trips as do helicopters with couples on tours. However, the best way to experience the whitest sand in the world is camping at Whitehaven Beach in the Whitsundays.

CAMPING AT WHITEHAVEN BEACH

In this blog post, I’ll share my Whitehaven camping experience with you and also give you some options for how you can book your own trip.

Currently, the best way to have an overnight camping experience at Whitehaven is this 2-day Sailing & Camping Tour .

  • Snorkel in the crystal-clear waters of Luncheon, Caves Cove, and Blue Pearl Bay
  • Help the crew to prepare delicious and healthy meals such as bolognese each night

MY EXPERIENCE CAMPING AT WHITEHAVEN BEACH

The night we camped it was me and my sister at our campsite and a couple of hundred yards away was another couple. That was it. Just four of us are on one of Australia’s best beaches. All of the tourists had left at sunset and no one arrived till after sunset. Camping at Whitehaven Beach was the ultimate way to experience not only Whitehaven Beach but the nearby Hill Inlet and the Whitsundays region.

We did the adventure with Scampers Island Camping Transfer. It was perfect for a traveler like me who definitely wasn’t carrying my own tent, cooler, cooking gear, and other camping essentials.

Transfer to and from Hamilton Island was handy for me in the purpose-built Scamper aluminum boat. However, you can also get the Scamper Island transfer from Airlie Beach, which is part of mainland Australia. For $40 on the first night and $20 for each additional night, they will rent you the tent and basic camping gear. You can check out the transfer prices from your destination and see what Scamper is all about on their website by clicking here .

We arrived mid-morning to begin our Whitehaven Beach Camping experience. There were one or two other boats at the beach with day-trippers but along the 8km of sand, we would be able to share it with fifty-odd tourists.

THE CAMPSITES AT WHITEHAVEN BEACH

The campsites are slightly hidden behind the trees. The day-trippers probably don’t even know they are there. Purpose-built clearings have been made for 4-5 individual campsites with their own privacy. A communal toilet block with no running water is in the middle of the campsite.

First things first it was time to get the tent and campsite set up. We were only staying one night but it’s always good to get ready early. As we were setting up we had our first interaction with the Aussie wildlife. A huge Goanna casually strolled through our campsite as if he was dropping by to say hello. Several other Goanna’s cruised around the campsite during that morning as we set up and it was pretty surreal. I can’t imagine being a city slicker from overseas and having a 2-meter-monitor lizard watch you set up the tent on a deserted beach!

I was dying to go and explore Whitehaven Beach and make it all the way down to the Hill Inlet, which is one of the most spectacular aerial views in Australia. Camping at Whitehaven Beach was a blast, we just grabbed our day packs and strolled down the beach towards the Hill Inlet. Often at times, we felt like we were on a deserted island. On a beach this long you are often entirely alone.

Along the journey, we stopped in to check out a colony of crabs thousands strong as they scurried across the sand. During the journey to the Hill inlet, we also investigated some dead trees, damaged by the cyclone/storm of 2017 that ravaged the region and Whitehaven Beach. We were in full exploration mode and loved the adventure.

HILL INLET AT WHITEHAVEN BEACH

After a couple of hours, we arrived at Hill Inlet and the tide was a bit high to pass so we stayed on the southern end of the Hill Inlet. I sent up the drone and enjoyed every second of flying over this epic landscape. It had been on my bucket list for a while so it was super cool to combine Hill Inlet with camping at Whitehaven Beach. There’s probably no better way to explore this region other than possibly getting up top in a chopper. However, a chopper ride is short-lived and we had 24-hours to fully take in Whitehaven Beach on our camping adventure.

We made the journey back to our campsite area just in time for the golden hour, grabbed some snacks, and then headed back out to the beach to watch the sun disappear over the mountains and the seaplanes to leave Whitehaven Beach. The sunset was a pearler and we felt so relaxed as the last boat left and we and the other couple were the only four people on the island!

A good night’s sleep in the tent was followed by an early wake-up as we went up to the viewpoint to see if we couldn’t double our luck with a beautiful sunrise to go with the sunset from the night before. Despite it being cloudy and windy there was a small window where the sun shone through and made for a beautiful scene as we sat atop the rock watching the clouds roll through.

For the rest of the morning, we spent the day beach-bumming and soaking up the good vibes of our camping experience at Whitehaven Beach. There are a few hikes in the area and lots to explore on paddleboards like our camping neighbors. I would have loved to stay for 2-3 nights and highly suggest doing so if you have the time. If not, one night is still fun and it’s a great way to really enjoy the beach and the region. When we saw the day-trippers coming to the beach, they really only sat where they were dropped off, took some selfies, and went home. I’m sure they had fun but this beach and region have quite a lot of cool spots and activities to offer if you take the time to explore.

THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO CAMPING AT WHITEHAVEN BEACH

  • You need to bring all of your own water
  • You need to bring all of your own food
  • Bring toilet paper
  • There are no facilities other than a drop toilet
  • There is no wifi
  • Bring warm clothes as it can get cold overnight depending on the time of year
  • Never leave any food out where mice, lizards, snakes, or bugs can find them
  • You must take out all of your trash with you

WHITEHAVEN BEACH FLIGHTS

Another way to see Whitehaven Beach is from the air. In fact, it is actually the best way to see it because Hill Inlet looks amazing from above with all of its patterns. You can either take a helicopter flight or a scenic plane flight. I think the helicopter is always better because they can hover a bit for photos and look around. You can book both online before you go to make sure you secure your flight. The plane flights are generally cheaper than the Helicopter flights and you do still get a great view.

It must have been a great experience! I like to live in a tent, although it has its share of discomfort. For example, if you take the RV option, then the trip can be more convenient. I read in the article https://vickyflipfloptravels.com/rv-tips-for-beginners/ how to choose the right one, and it seems not difficult. Do you have experience in this?

Hi! Came across your article in my research of camping at the Whitsundays as I’ll be doing so in a couple of weeks. Can you tell me about the walk to hill inlet? When I look on Google maps it doesn’t provide a walking trail.

The ultimate guide to camping on the whitsundays.

The Whitsunday Islands are world-renowned and a must-do on every great Australian travel adventure. One of the main reasons they are so well known is Whitehaven Beach , the 2021 TripAdvisor Best Beach in the World. With pearl white sand and crystal clear blue water in a tropical region, what’s not to love? The Whitsunday Islands are located in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef off the East Coast of Australia in Queensland . Comprising 74 different islands, the Whitsundays offers nothing short of the chance for a trip of a lifetime. Whether looking at day trips, overnight sailing or camping, this guide has everything you need to know about exploring the Whitsundays and Whitehaven Beach.

South Whithaven Lookout

Day trips to the Whitsundays:

If time is not on your side, plenty of day trip tour options are available. These are easy to find through a quick google or even when you get to Airlie Beach . They are the perfect way to see all the popular things in a short trip, most taking you to Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet. While an excellent idea for anyone short on time, we highly recommend camping as the best way to experience the Whitsundays.

What to bring camping on your Whitsundays trip:

  • Gas or fuel stove for cooking (open fires are prohibited in National Parks)
  • Lighter or matches
  • Cooking pot
  • bowl, plates, cups and cutlery

  • Bathers and towel

  • Food (pack more than you think)

  • A good book

South Molle Island

How to get to the Whitsunday Islands:

Camping on the Whitsunday Islands is a unique and beautiful experience, and it doesn’t need to break the bank if you know the right way to do it. Scamper   is the only company that operates transfers from Airlie Beach (Shute Harbour) and Hamilton Island to the campsites. There are other companies, but they only operate private transfers and cost so much more. About $1,000 more. Moreover,  Scamper  also hires out all the equipment you need for camping on the Whitsunday Islands, making it even easier.

There are 15 campsites across the four main islands; Hook Island, Whitsunday Island, South Molle Island and Henning Island. The best thing is that  Scamper  offers multi-stop transfers, allowing you to camp at multiple sites and islands in one trip! This is highly recommended and easy to do and ensures you get the most out of your Whitsunday experience. Please visit the Scamper website for more information about prices and locations.

To book, call Scamper on 0487 226 737 or visit their website .

Camping on the Whitsundays

You must book campgrounds before going to the island, and we suggest checking availability before booking your transfer to the islands. The Whitsunday Islands campgrounds are all managed by the Queensland National Park’s rangers and can be booked through their website . Make sure to book early, as popular camp sports, including Whitehaven beach, can book out early, especially during school holidays.

As stated above, there are 15 different sites to choose from, each giving you a different experience. Looking back, we would have done three of the island, or three spots, with two nights at each! We recommend selecting at least two different camp sports.

$7 per night per adult.

$28 per family per night (a family is defined as one or two adults and up to 5 children under 18).

Hiring a Kayak

If exploring the water around the islands is something you want to do, make sure to hire a kayak too! While Scamper doesn’t hire them out, Salty Dog Sea Kayaking does! You will need to notify Scamper that you intend to take a kayak, which costs $15 (paid to Scamper directly) to transport.

$60 per night for two people sit on top kayak.

$40 per night for a single person sitting on top kayak.

To book, visit their website here .

Getting to Shute Harbour:

Shute Harbour is 15 minutes from Airlie Beach and is easily accessible by private vehicle, taxi or public transport. For those driving your car, free parking is available at Shute Harbour. However, it is limited. Therefore, we suggest arriving early to secure your parking spot.

Buses run regularly from Airlie Beach and take you to the Harbour, less than 200m from the Scamper check-in. Be sure to carry cash with you, as they do not accept card payments.

Things to know before camping on the Whitsundays:

  • Rats, snakes and spiders call these islands home, but they are nothing to worry about, just something to be aware of. Especially the rats; you must ensure all your food is stored in a tub and off the ground.
  • Toilet paper is not always available in the toilets, so it’s best to bring your own just in case it has run out!
  • There is little reception to no, especially on Whitsunday Island (where the only reception is about 1 bar at the lookout), so be prepared to be offline for a few days.
  • No access to power outlets, so you will need a power bank.
  • Campfires are not allowed, so cooking must be done on gas or camp stoves.
  • Everything you bring in must take out, so all your rubbish must be returned to Shute Harbour and disposed of thoughtfully.
  • Stinger season; jellyfish and stingers are around during the warmer months, from November to March. It is recommended to wear a stinger suit during this period!
  • Do not swim in Cid Harbour! Sharks are known to frequent here, and there have been shark attacks.
  • You cannot take alive or dead coral from the islands.

Day trip boats on Whitehaven Beach

Our experience camping on the Whitsundays:

When we started planning our Whitsunday trip, we knew we wanted to camp out there to get the best out of our experience. We had just returned to Yeppoon from camping on Great Kepple Island and knew we wanted a similar experience here. Yentl had previously done a day trip tour, and while he enjoyed it, he felt he had missed out on some of the islands’ beauty. So, not even a day after leaving Kepple Island, we were on the hunt to find out how to camp on the infamous Whitehaven Beach, one of the most famous beaches in the world.

Through some impressive google searching, we eventually found  Scamper. They were extremely helpful when booking, recommending which islands to visit and how long to stay on each. After some debating, we decided on two nights on South Molle Island, then three nights on Whitsunday Island at the Whitehaven Beach campsite. We loved our two nights on South Molle Island, being almost the only people on the island the whole time. It was just us and a family that spent most of the time on their sailboat! South Molle has stunning hiking tracks with lookouts over the other Whitsunday Islands. Whitehaven beach was an incredible experience. Once all the day trip tours leave, it is just you and maybe ten other campers with the beach all to yourselves.

All Reviews

An enjoyable two days/nights on this sailing trip. All the crew were lovely and cooked us up great meals! Would have been nice to have stopped off at more beaches but overall a great trip.

Alex, Savannah and Kate made us feel welcome right from the start! If you’re looking for a luxious overnight boat trip, this isn’t it. But it totally makes up for it in all other ways. Alex made sure we were up early to get to Whitehaven beach first. This made such a difference being able to see it empty. Every snorkel spot was incredible and his knowledge of the reef was great. The food was delicious and regular tea and coffee to warm up after being in the sea. The beds are bunks with no separate cabins and it was extremely hot and humid but we still had an amazing time. We would 100% recommend this trip to anyone.

The team was very friendly, the food amazing! When we arrived at the boat, the engine was being repaired which was absolutely alright. But about 2.5 hours in we had to stop to fix the engine again. That meant that we were on the boiling sun from 11am- 7pm. I wished they had put up the sun cover to protect us from the sun. The beds were comfy but I wished I’d known before that it is VERY hot and humid in the cabin. Some others and myself had to sleep on deck, which was beautiful under the stars. The girls preparing the food were amazing and the skipper was a legend! Thank you!

We did the tour from the 21st to the 23rd of February 2024 and in general really enjoy it. The snorkelling spots were great, lots of fish and corals and we were the first to arrive on Whitehaven beach in the morning of the second day. Some more activities would have been great. The crew, Amin and Savannah, really engaged with the group, cooked delicious meals, and did an awesome job. What downgraded the trip a little bit was how our skipper treated one of the crew members and how he killed the vibe (no drinking games, strict music selection…). All in all we had a great time and the group made it really special.

One of the best things I've ever done - cannot recommend this enough. fantastic.

Unreal trip! Been the highlight while backpacking the east coast. The crew Ty, molly and ally were amazing couldnt asked for better while sailing the Whitsundays, they went above and beyond when my friend needed help and we couldn’t be more grateful. Best itinerary from hearing about other trips, made the most of all the snorkelling spots and went to the Whitsundays beach at the best time to avoid busy peak times. Definitely recommend this boat if your going to do the Whitsundays :)

Enjoyed every minuit! Great, friendly staff :) Made memories of a lifetime!

Super friendly crew that took us to the best places! Thanks to Alex, Max and Elise who made or trip better than expected!

We had such a great time on Spank Me, the amazing crew Juliette, Max and skipper Alex took us to all the best places and were super friendly and fun! Alex made sure he got us to Whitehaven beach before anyone else which was a highlight! We had two great evenings with delicious meals. Thank you to Alex, Juliette and Max for an amazing trip, excellent music and interesting dance moves!

I had a really good time on spanke me. Alex, Max and Julia did everything to show us the best from the Whitsundays.

16 Very Best Whitsunday Tours To Choose From In 2024

When deciding on the best Whitsunday tours to choose from, it can feel a little overwhelming because there are so many to pick between! We’ve been lucky to experience quite a few of them now, which is why we’re sharing this Whitsundays guide with you.

With so many amazing tours to consider, read about the best Whitsundays tours from Airlie Beach, tours from Hamilton Island and overnight sailing adventures around the Whitsunday islands and Great Barrier Reef.

Table of Contents

What makes Whitsundays special

ocean-rafting-whitsundays-hill-inlet

What makes Whitsundays special is the unbelievable blue water, home to the softest sand in the world and the pure beauty and jaw dropping views of the islands. It is unlike anywhere else in the country and really is a special place everyone should visit.

After Cyclone Debbie hit Whitsundays a few years back, it ruined a lot of the reef and the underwater life too. Even if you go out to the outer reef called Hardy Reef, it’s not that great. I would absolutely recommend seeing the reef from a seaplane instead.

But, Whitsundays is a great place to learn to dive or for those who haven’t snorkelled before because you’ll be doing both in relatively shallow water.

If you love diving or snorkelling and wondering where is the best place to do it in the Great Barrier Reef, I 100% recommend going to Lady Elliot Island, Lady Musgrave Island or Heron Island, all located in the Southern Great barrier Reef off the coast of Bundaberg and Gladstone. All are absolutely amazing with Lady Elliot Island being home to the best snorkelling and diving I have ever done.

You can read our guide for the Southern Great Barrier Reef Islands if you’re keen to learn more.

Best overnight sailing adventures and tours

The best way to see the Whitsunday islands is to jump on an overnight sailing adventure or tour. This is going to be the best way to really appreciate the jaw-dropping surroundings of the area. While Airlie Beach is a great little town, it’s a bit more special to experience it all from a boat instead.

1. Reefsleep and Reefsuites 1 night experience on the outer reef pontoon

reefsleep-whitsundays

We have finally ticked off the incredible Reefsleep adventure which is a 1 night // 2 day tour out to the outer reef, called Hardy Reef with Cruise Whitsundays. This bucket list experience will see you share a pontoon with up to 30 people as you spend the night looking up at the stars from a luxury swag tent. If you stay in the Reefsuites, you’ll be staying in the first underwater hotel room in Australia. Read about our experience on the Reefsleep before you book.

If you’d prefer to do a day trip to Reefworld and snorkel or scuba dive in the outer reef, book a Day Trip here .

2. Book a 2 night sailing tour on a super fast yacht

sailing-two-day-tour-whitsundays

This amazingly huge racing yacht takes up to 26 guests on a 2 day and 2 night tour to the famous Whitehaven Beach, Hill Inlet Lookout, snorkelling at Luncheon Bay, Caves Cove, Blue Pearl Bay, plus other amazing locations. As it’s one of the fastest yachts in Australia, this is the perfect tour for the adventurous travellers! Expect all meals included while you relax on the deck and take in the views.

3. Jump aboard a luxury sailing yacht for 2 days

whitsundays-two-day-sailing-tour

This is what Whitsundays is all about! Imagine yourself sailing on a luxury yacht, kicking back while sailing around the 72 islands in the Whitsundays including Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet Lookout! If I was to pick a sailing tour, it would be this one . I have always envied everyone on these big sailing boat tours.

4. Combine sailing and camping on this unique 2 day trip

sailing-and-camping-whitsundays

Cruise around Whitsunday island on this beautiful yacht while ticking off the best snorkelling spots including Hook Island, Hayman Island and Whitsunday Island, before pitching up a swag tent on the beach for the night. This is a unique experience unlike others and would be really memorable.

5. Spend 3 nights exploring hidden gems on a sailing boat

three-day-whitsundays-tour

If you’re looking for sailing trips that will take you to some amazing hidden gems, this 3 day sailing trip is for you. What I noticed on some of the day trips to Whitehaven Beach is that it never feels like enough time to take it all in. On this trip, you’ll have up to 5 hours on Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet.

You’ll also go to Chalkies Beach, a hidden gem I have heard from many people who work in travel and from locals that this is an amazing beach, and where Pirates of the Carribean was filmed. It’s located opposite Whitehaven Beach. I think this tour would be super special to go on.

6. Camp On Whitehaven Beach

camping-whitehaven-beach

Do you love the idea of Whitehaven Beach camping? Privately owned company SCAMPER can help you organise your own camping trip to various spots and hidden gems around Whitsunday Islands. They can provide you with any camping gear you require, and take you to the camp site you choose.

This is a cheap and fantastic opportunity to not only visit Whitehaven Beach but camp on it too! Next time, I would definitely go on a Whitsunday camping trip for sure as I think you would see it so differently. Plus, imagine waking up at sunrise at Whitehaven Beach?

7. Stay at Palm Bay Resort on Long Island

long-island-whitsundays

OK, so it’s not a sailing trip, but I 100% recommend that you book a couple of nights at Palm Bay Resort on Long Island. We stayed here for five days and absolutely loved it, and wrote a whole article dedicated to Why We Love Palm Bay Resort ! It really reminded us of our backpacking days in Thailand, but for grown ups! Basically what I’m trying to say is, it’s like a luxury backpacker experience, but without backpackers.

The adults only resort features cabins all lining the beach with your own hammock to chill out in. There’s a swimming pool to lounge around in drinking cocktails, before you all move to the sunset bar for sunset cocktails. We hung out with the other guests and loved it all. Check out our Instagram Reel about our stay here and you’ll soon see why we loved it!

Best Whitsunday day trips from Airlie Beach

Don’t worry about missing out if you’re not doing an overnight sailing adventure. There are plenty of popular day trips from Airlie Beach that you need to put on your bucket list.

8. Book a scenic flight over Whitehaven Beach and Heart Reef

scenic-flight-whitsundays

You absolutely must book this seaplane flight over Whitehaven Beach and Heart Reef! There are some flights you can book that just go over one or the other, but make sure you do this one that goes over both places. Seeing the beautiful Whitsunday islands from above really is the biggest highlight about coming here. We’ve done a similar flight up in Cairns and this one in Whitsunday islands is better, purely because you get to see the amazing Whitehaven Beach and the famous Heart Reef scenic flight from above.

Just to note – you’ll be taken out near to Proserpine Airport for the flight, so you could time it like we did and do this either when you land or before you go home. We timed it just before our departure and they’ll drop you off at the airport so you’ll save on the shuttle cost!

9. Book a Whitehaven Beach day trip with Ocean Rafting

whitsundays-day-trip

Knowing which are the best Whitsundays one day tours and trips can feel like a lucky dip. We managed to get on the ever so popular  Ocean Rafting Whitsundays tour , purely because someone had cancelled a few minutes before us.

We met a woman next to us on our flight to Airlie Beach who worked on all of the tours and when I asked her which is her favourite, she said the Ocean Rafting boat tour.

Check out our Ocean Rafting review where I share all of the pros and cons of booking this trip! The main thing to know is that this is the only tour that is actually allowed into Whitehaven Beach which is pretty cool!

You can also book a combined  Ocean Rafting Tour with A Scenic Flight  as well. We totally would have done this if it wasn’t booked out.

10. Or book the Red Cat Adventures Whitehaven Beach day trip

red-cat-adventures-whitsunday-tours

We have also been on the Red Cat Adventures Whitehaven beach trip which is also fun. While the tour is pretty similar to Ocean Rafting one, the snorkelling was much better on this one (and actually better here than in the outer reef as well!).

11. Experience a day trip to Whitehaven Beach on a sailing boat

sailing-boat-whitsunday-tours

If you don’t have time to do a multi-day sailing trip, you might like to sit back and enjoy a day trip adventure to Whitehaven Beach on an epic pirate sailing boat . While it will ultimately take longer to get there than it would on the Ocean Rafting or Red Cat Adventure boat tours, this experience is all about sailing and taking in the views. I must say, this is the boat I’m always envious of seeing when w’ere in Whitsundays.

12. Whitsundays Sunset Cruise

whitsundays-sunset-cruise

Explore the beautiful coastline of Airlie Beach with a 2 hour sunset cruise on a beautiful sailing boat, which includes snacks and bubbles. If you’re lucky, you might be able to spot turtles on this cruise, and plan it on a Wednesday and you’ll see the locals take part in the weekly boat race.

13. Airlie Beach Skydive

airlie-beach-sky-dive-whitsundays

No trip is complete to Australia or up the East Coast of Australia if you haven’t experienced an Airlie Beach skydive ! I can’t think of a better place to tick off your skydive bucket list because the views over the Whitsundays would be absolutely incredible! It’s no wonder this is one of the best things to do in Airlie Beach!

14. Jet Ski Tour Around Whitsundays

Whitsundays-Jetski-Tours

Prefer to do things a little off the beaten track in Whitsundays? A two hour jet ski tour in Whitsundays is an action packed adventure, taking you to two of the most exclusive islands, including Daydream Island and South Molle Islands. This is a fantastic tour to consider if you’d prefer to have the freedom to go on your own jet ski to explore the islands.

Day trips from Hamilton Island

15. from hamilton island: whitehaven and chalkies sail & snorkel tour.

Chalkies-Beach-small_0

There’s one major place on my bucket list I really want to see in Whitsundays, it’s a Chalkies Beach tour . As mentioned above in the 3 day sailing tour, Chalkies beach is renowned for being a locals hidden gem where you can snorkel onto the reef straight off the beach.

The beach is opposite Whitehaven Beach and although filmed in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, it’s supposed to have decent snorkelling and is a stunning beach. I’ll update this once I’ve been there, hopefully sometime soon!

16. Sunset BBQ and dinner cruise from Hamilton Island

dinner-cruise-whitsundays

Staying on Hamilton Island and interested in doing some more tours? Why not jump on this BBQ Dinner Cruise from Hamilton Island? The BBQ buffet dinner is a fantastic opportunity to really bask in the natural beauty out of the Whitsunday islands while you enjoy every single moment of being there.

Whitsunday Islands highlights

Whitsunday islands travel faqs, do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

When is the best time to visit the Whitsundays?

Any time of year is a good time to visit the Whitsundays. As a tropical destination, the archipelago experiences hot, rainy summers and warm, dry winters. Average high temperatures linger between 74°F and 88°F, while lows average a mild 63°F to 77°F. The water temperature averages a pleasant 73°F to 82°F throughout the year.

If you want to go snorkeling or diving, you may be better off planning your trip in the winter (dry) season. Rainfall in the summer tends to come in the form of brief tropical downpours, but it can impact water visibility. Whales can also be spotted in winter from May to October during their annual migration from Antarctica.

If you visit between October and May, AKA stinger season, take extra caution when swimming in the ocean by wearing a stinger suit to protect yourself from possible jellyfish stings.

How to get to the Whitsundays

The Whitsundays can be accessed via one of the coastal towns on the mainland, with the most popular jumping off point being Airlie Beach. There are two main airports in the Whitsundays: Great Barrier Reef Airport located on Hamilton Island, and Whitsunday Coast Airport in Proserpine which is the closest airport to Airlie Beach.

If you fly into Whitsunday Coast Airport, you'll need to drive or take a transfer to Airlie Beach. This is easy to arrange with buses meeting all incoming flights. The transfer from Whitsunday Coast Airport to Airlie Beach takes around 25 minutes.

How do I get around the Whitsundays?

Passenger ferries operate a regular daily service between the mainland and the major Whitsunday islands. You can also do a sailing day tour to explore the archipelago's many highlights.

What should I pack for the Whitsundays?

The Whitsundays tend to be a casual place so you can leave your fancy clothes at home. As a top destination for water-based adventures, swimwear is a must. The same goes for sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat (even in winter) as the sun reflects off the water and white sand. Bring all the essentials, including basic medications, as shops are few and far between on the islands.

Can I use my cell phone in the Whitsundays?

You'll pick up cell phone signal in and around major tourist hubs such as Airlie Beach, but there's limited or no coverage in some parts of the Whitsundays, particularly when you're out at sea or on more remote islands.

What is the internet access like in the Whitsundays?

You'll find wi-fi in bars, cafes and restaurants in major tourist hubs like Airlie Beach, Hamilton Island and Daydream Island. There's limited or no wi-fi available in some parts of the Whitsundays, particularly when you're sailing or exploring more remote islands.

What should I wear in the Whitsundays?

There's no need to get dressed up, even if you're staying at one of the resorts in the Whitsundays. Casual clothes or active wear are fine during the day. Smart casual (think jeans and a t-shirt) is the norm for restaurants at the resorts.

Is it safe to swim in the Whitsundays?

The short answer is yes. That being said, there are some no-swimming zones. You should also listen to local advice and stay alert at all times.

Some of the top things to be aware of when swimming in the Whitsundays include stingers, crocs and sharks.

Are Intrepid trips accessible for travelers with disabilities?

We are committed to making travel widely  accessible , regardless of ability or disability. We do our best to help you see the world, regardless of physical or mental limitations.

We are always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Frequently asked questions.

It's up to you! When you purchase this package, you receive  two tours at a discounted rate. Our friendly travel agents will then book you into your preferred dates for both your Whitsunday sailing trip (2 days, 2 nights) and  your K'gari 4WD trip (3 days, 2 nights). Please note that dates are subject to availability.

We recommend giving yourself two weeks for the whole trip, including travel time between the Sunshine Coast and Airlie Beach, with plenty of time to discover Noosa, Rainbow Beach and Airlie Beach along the way! Check out our  East Coast itineraries  or chat with our travel agents to organise the rest of your tours, transport and accommodation!

This package is super flexible, so you can choose! Whether you start with your Whitsunday sailing trip and finish with your K'gari tour, or vice versa, these tours can work around your schedule.

The journey between Rainbow Beach (the gateway to K'gari) and Airlie Beach (the gateway to the Whitsunday Islands) is an 11-hour drive (without stops). The  Greyhound Bus  from Rainbow Beach to Airlie Beach takes between 14.5 to 16.5 hours. We recommend giving yourself two weeks for this package, allowing plenty of time to explore the  East Coast of Australia !

Transport is not included in the standard package.  However, a  Greyhound Whimit Bus Pass  or campervan, are popular add-ons and we can offer you a discounted rate if you need a hand getting from A to B! Opt for the package + Whimit Bus Pass option at checkout, or live chat with us online and we'll help you plan your journey.

In total, this package includes 4 nights of accommodation. You will spend 2 nights aboard Powerplay in a comfortable shared cabin, and 2 nights in a shared tent at a campsite on K'gari (Fraser Island).  Accommodation  between K'gari and Airlie Beach isn't included, however, our travel agents can book premium hostels for you along the East Coast. Just enquire in the live chat about discount deals!

Due to the 11-hour journey between Airlie Beach and Rainbow Beach, we recommend giving yourself at least one or two days between the end of your first tour and the beginning of your second.

Both of these tours are social, backpacker-style trips. Naturally, this attracts young, fun and social travellers, making it super cruisy and easy to make friends! We recommend this package for solo travellers, small groups and friends/couples alike.

Your two tours are all-inclusive and catered for. In total, you will receive 4 breakfasts, 4 lunches and 4 dinners, along with snacks in between.

Common dietary requirements like vegetarian and gluten-free can be catered for upon request. If you have dietary requirements, please let our travel agents know ASAP so they can confirm and arrange for any changes. Powerplay charges a $20 surcharge for special diets, payable upon check-in.

Unfortunately, this package isn't suitable for children. This is a backpacker-style trip designed for travellers aged between 18 and 35. If you're looking for family-friendly trips, check out our  Whitsunday tours  and  K'gari tours  which are perfect for children.
