Private wine tour.

For bachelorette parties, corporate events, birthdays, or other private events, a private wine tour will enable you and a much larger group to either do a wine tasting hike or a 4×4 vineyard tour together, with no outside parties able to book spots with your group!

This can be great for an experience that will more intimately accommodate you and your party. Have a group over 5 people? Rent multiple 4×4 vehicles with plenty of snacks and beverages for a more sizable group.

Lunch or further snacks may be catered in for your event, with our preferred local catering company, Blue Table, offering choices of sandwiches, salads, cheese and charcuterie boards, and dessert options for a party that may coincide with lunch or dinner.

Los Angeles Wine Tasting | Along the Expo Line

Allison Levine [November 2016]

wine tasting los angeles metro

Wine Tasting | Los Angeles | Expo Line Edition

The 14.7 mile stretch from Downtown Los Angeles to Santa Monica can be the bane of existence for many Angelenos. While at the right time of day, it can take as little as twenty minutes to get across the city, it typically takes closer to an hour (or more). The 10 Freeway turns us all into inchworms who slowly crawl across the city.

In May 2016, the Expo Line opened. The Expo Line is Los Angeles’ long-awaited metro line running from Downtown LA to Santa Monica. From one end to the other, the metro will take forty-seven minutes to cross the city. Of course, it could be faster at times to take a car, but if you take the metro, you can sit back and relax, send emails and watch the traffic as you pass by. Or, you can hop off and on the metro as you visit wine bars along the Expo Line. No matter whether you start from Downtown or Santa Monica, there are wine bars within walking distance from six of the eighteen stops along the Expo Line. So grab your walking shoes and your Tap Card and start drinking! Los Angeles wine tasting by train, what could be less likely and more fun than this.

7th St/Metro Center  ( 660 S Figueroa St, Los Angeles 90017)

There are four wine bars within walking distance to the first stop on the Expo Line. We start our Los Angeles wine tasting adventure here.

d vine wine bar tasting los angeles

A short four-minute walk (.2 mile) from the 7 th Street/Metro Center stop is the underground wine bar D’Vine Wine Cellar. Located below the O Hotel, the wine bar shares an entrance with the nightclub Honeycut. Head down the stairs and go left for music and cocktails and right for wine and food. The wine list is international with fifteen red wines and eleven white wines by the glass. New wine director Killian Trehoux has recently arrived from France so expect to see a possible French wine focus on the list. Wine flights are available for $16.

mignon wine tasting los angeles

A thirteen minute (.6 mile) walk from the metro is the quaint neighborhood spot, Mignon, located next to Cole’s, home of the original French dip. The warm, inviting wine bar is dominated by an eighteen-seat bar in the center of the space. There are also two two-top tables by the door. The weekly changing wine list is eclectic and interesting with a sparkling refosco from Slovenia, godelia from Spain and other tasty wines from Italy, Austria, France, Germany and New Zealand. Mignon also has sherry, port, cider and dessert wines by the glass. A menu of salads, charcuterie, cheese and other small plates is available.

Wednesday night is flight night where you can get 3 ½ glasses of wine for $15.

Located only three minutes (.2 mile) from Mignon, or eleven minutes (.5 mile) from the metro, Garcons de Café is located in the Spring Arcade building, a glass enclosed space that runs between Spring St. and Broadway that currently houses a few restaurants with more on the way. Garcons de Café is a charming French marketplace and lounge. French owners Sofian Ketfi and Thomas Choulot met in Africa and with a shared love of wine, came to Los Angeles to open their wine bar. The wine selection, which changes weekly, is exclusively French and features primarily organic, small production wines. Full bottles of wine are also available for retail purchase. With a low markup, the wines are a great value which makes it no wonder why Garcons de Café is a popular spot for sommeliers to stop for a drink. In addition to wine, cheese and charcuterie are available, as are a selection of French-designed clothing and items that are on display.

buzz wine tasting los angeles

Not far from Garcons de Café (6 minutes/.3 mile) is Buzz Wine and Beer Shop, a fourteen minute (.6 mile) walk from the metro. Open late at night, Buzz offers a unique selection of wines and beers. An energetic, casual space, where the wine list is scrawled on the chalkboard walls, Bacaro LA features an international selection of boutique wines ranging from Georgia, Croatia, Italy, France, Spain, Chile and California. By ordering only one case per wine at a time, the list is constantly changing and a great opportunity to try new and interesting wines. Bacaro LA also offers a full brunch and dinner menu. Monday nights are “buy one, get one free” and on Wednesday it is “Wine Down Wednesday” where each glass gets $1 cheaper than the previous round.

With a rotating stock, the boutique wines include many hard-to-find wines. While Bar and Garden is a wine retail shop, they do have a tasting bar in the back and offer tastings every Tuesday from 5-8pm and Sunday from 2-5pm. And on Fridays they host “Five for Five and Five” and you can taste five wines for five dollars starting at 5pm.

Westwood/Rancho (10800 W Exposition Bl, Los Angeles, 90064)

Once you get to the Westwood/Rancho stop, the walk to a wine bar is a little further. If you do not feel like the walk, now may be the time to jump into Uber for a short ride. You've made it about half way through your Los Angeles wine tasting by train adventure.

Sara wine bar los angeles

Sara, The Wine Bar (3936 Sepulveda Blvd, Culver City, CA 90230)

Located two miles south of the metro stop, Sara, The Wine Bar is a hidden neighborhood wine bar. Italian owner Sara has taken her mother’s recipes to create an Italian-inspired menu of small plates, such as charcuterie, cheese, caprese, polpettine, lasagna, and scampi diavola. The wine list is international with a few Italian selections. But the goal of the bar is to be warm and unpretentious, where friends can come and enjoy wine and food. Happy hour is daily until 7pm.

Expo/Sepulveda ( 11295 Exposition Bl. Los Angeles, 90064)

One stop past the Westwood/Rancho stop is the Expo/Sepulveda stop, just next to the 405 Freeway.

The Wine House (2311 Cotner Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90064)

The tasting room is open Monday – Saturday from 11am-6pm and on Sunday from 12-5pm. One-ounce tastes of wine range in price from $1.50 to $8. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, sometimes all you need is a day to recharge and slip away to sip world-class wines in the beautiful vineyards, wine villages, and wineries surrounding LA.

  • City of Santa Barbara
  • Temecula Valley

wine tasting tour los angeles

1. Santa Barbara County Wine Country (Santa Ynez Valley)

Nestled on a pristine stretch of California’s central coastline, just 1 ½ hours north of Los Angles, Santa Barbara County’s Wine Country offers world-class wines in a magnificent setting.

Santa Barbara Wine Country is known for its beautiful vineyards and many wine trails located among the County’s rolling hills and picturesque vineyards. There are over 250 wineries and over 70 different varietals grown in the region.

The transverse nature of the Santa Ynez Valley lends itself to a diverse range of wines produced here. Santa Barbara Wine Country and its acclaimed AVAs keep demonstrating that Santa Barbara is a world-class cool climate wine region and rival to its more well-known cousins up north (Napa & Sonoma).

Santa Barbara has established a reputation for world-class Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Syrah, but you’ll also find deep, rich Bordeaux, Rhône, Spanish and Italian varietals.

The diverse microclimates create 7 distinct certified American Viticultural Areas (AVAs) that are unique in geography, soil structure and climate, creating some of California’s most exciting and delicious wines.

In addition to the spectacular countryside Vineyards and Wineries, Santa Barbara County offers a wealth of charming towns, each with its unique vibe and urban wineries and tasting rooms. These wine villages are all within a short driving distance of each other:

Just 80 miles north of Los Angeles you will find one of America’s most beautiful cities and one of my favorite destinations. Known as “America’s Riveria” Santa Barbara offers dazzling beaches, soaring mountains, and a vibrant, unique, and diverse wine and culinary scene.

This urban environment differs from the surrounding vineyards and rolling hills of Santa Ynez Valley Wine Country (Santa Barbara County Wine Country)

With over 30 wine tasting rooms located in the City, Santa Barbara is home to numerous outdoor patio wine hangouts, breweries, shops, art galleries, museums, and street art all within walking distance of each other. Tasting fees vary per winery but are typically $15 – $20 to taste 4 to 5 wines.

There are 3 distinctive wine tasting neighborhoods in Santa Barbara.

The eclectic Funk Zone offers a hip young vibe to sip wine and craft beer. The Funk Zone is in a repurposed warehouse district adjacent to the Pacific Ocean just off lower State Street (Santa Barbara’s Main Street).

You can choose from over 16 local wineries and tasting rooms along with colorful murals, shops, art galleries, craft breweries, a distillery, and restaurants.

3. Temecula Valley

Just a short distance south of` Los Angeles and near San Diego, and Orange County is Southern California’s Temecula Valley Wine Country.  Temecula is known for its laidback atmosphere where you can experience wonderful wines with beautiful views. The wineries include everything from small boutique family-owned wineries to large, sophisticated tasting rooms. The hospitality industry is thriving here, with restaurants, hotels, golf courses, breweries, distilleries and even a casino.

Temecula offers incredible curated activities including wine tours and epic hot air balloon experiences.

This warm region is cooled by Pacific Ocean wind and fog that flows through the “Rainbow Gap” of the Santa Margarita Mountains. The Valley has almost 50 wineries located among the region’s rolling hills and valleys producing a variety of wines, including award-winning and artisan Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir. Grapes that originate in warmer climates, like Sangiovese and Tempranillo, also do well.

Old Town Temecula is the historical hub of Temecula Valley. This charming walkable district includes restaurants, shops, beer, and wine tasting rooms, museums, speakeasies, outdoor art, a performance theater, and vibrant nightlife.

4. Malibu Wine Country

Malibu’s close proximity to Los Angeles makes for an easy, memorable and fun day of wine tasting.

Malibu is well known for its beautiful beaches, rocky cliffs, surfers, movie stars  and mansions. But more recently, it  has become known for its celebrated local wineries and tasting rooms.

This wine region is nestled within the Santa Monica Mountains, stretching between the Malibu coast and Mulholland highway to the north. The Malibu AVA is small with only a handful of wineries and tasting rooms to visit.

The wineries and tasting rooms are divided between the better known coastal areas and the picturesque Santa Monica Mountains with stunning canyon and mountain vistas.

Varietals planted are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc, Mourvedre, Grenache, Viognier, Malbec, Sangiovese, Petit Verdot, Chardonnay and others.

5. Ojai & Ventura County

Looking for a quiet, laid-back and uncrowded wine tasting experience? Visit Ventura and Ojai, in Ventura County, California.

Tucked away in a hidden valley one hour north of Los Angeles, the quaint town of Ojai lies in the scenic recessess of the Topa Topa Mountains, about 15 miles inland from the Pacific Coast. The Ojai Valley (pronounced Oh-hi) is home to great wine with over 6 tasting rooms and wineries.

Ojai is an easy getaway from Los Angeles and visitors can enjoy a walkable downtown, with shops, restaurants and numerous wine tasting rooms.

In addition to the many downtown wine tasting rooms, there are several wineries in a vineyard setting where you can sip among the vines!

The variety of minerals in the soil and the cold air that blows in from the ocean make the region particularly well suited for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, but Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon are also stars here.

Nearby towns of Ventura and Oxnard are  home to numerous boutique family owned wineries that serve delicious wine in an industrial atmosphere.

Wine bars in LA

Unless it's the weekend, there's not much chance of sneaking in an early wine tasting at Bar Covell as they don't open until 4 pm on weekdays, but maybe that's not a bad thing. This cozy, old-fashioned pub-style wine bar is owned and run by a very serious wine aficionado who really knows a thing or two about wine. Think walking wine encyclopedia, and you'll be on the right track.

At Bar Covell, you can forget about playing potluck by choosing an unfamiliar wine from a wine list because they don't have one. The way it works at Bar Covell is the bartender will have a chat with you and then offer you three samples to taste before you need to commit to one. No need to go all out and purchase a full bottle either, as they serve wine by the glass.

4628 Hollywood Boulevard

The Blending Lab Winery

The Blending Lab Winery takes wine tasting to a whole new level as they have a tasting room and make and blend their own wines too. All of the grapes they use to make wine come from California, so you're guaranteed to be getting something that is one hundred percent from the sunshine state.

As well as regular wine tastings, The Blending Lab Winery offers a couple of unique wine experiences you may want to try. You can take an instructor-led workshop where you'll learn the basics of wine blending or just give it a go on your own by following an instruction sheet. Either way, it's great fun and teaches something about wine and blending techniques.

The best wine tasting near LA

San Antonio Winery

Housed in a beautiful hacienda-style building, the San Antonio Winery is LA's oldest established winery. The Spanish influence continues inside, where there's also a restaurant, a wine tasting room, and a bodega.

All the wine they make here is produced from grapes grown in their own vineyards. They offer a superb range of Cabernet Sauvignon, plus sparkling wines, reds, and roses, so you'll find something to suit all tastes at this winery.

The San Antonio Winery has several different tasting concepts, so you can join a small group tasting or spoil yourself with a private tasting. All tastings are presented by a wine steward, include a charcuterie board, and you get a San Antonio Winery wine glass to take home as a souvenir of your visit.

737 Lamar Street

Angeleno Wine Company

The brick building occupied by the Angeleno Wine Company might not look much from the outside, but inside it's a treasure trove of amazing wines. When you walk into this Los Angeles winery, you'll see the most recent productions on display in huge casks. Wander past those upcoming vintages, and you'll find yourself at the bar where the wine tastings take place.

The Angeleno Wine Company focuses on grapes grown in southern California, so you can expect to taste wines produced from varietals like Treixadura and Alicante Bouschet, among others. It's important to this winery that their wines are produced by growers who practice sustainable and organic viticulture and that they keep their wine completely vegan.

The Angeleno Wine Company only opens their tasting room on weekends. On Saturdays, you can go for a wine tasting between midday and 8 pm and on Sundays between midday and 6 pm. If you're considering a lengthy and relaxed tasting, it's best to book your table in advance.

1646 North Spring Street

Cobblestone Vineyards

Cobblestone Vineyards is a family concern that produces wine from its three small vineyards. One vineyard is on California's Central Coast, the other in Napa Valley, and the third in New Zealand.

Because of the restricted size of the annual crop, this winery only produces around 3,000 bottles a year, but they're of exceptionally high quality. Here you'll be able to taste their Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Cabernet Sauvignon.

1500 Cotner Avenue

Wine stores in LA

Mignon Wine Bar

If you're in Downtown LA and feel the need for fortification in the form of a swift wine tasting, then drop into the Mignon Wine Bar . This LA wine bar has a real ooh la la factor as they serve small plates of French food that are an ideal accompaniment to a wine-tasting session.

Inside, the bar has a definite Mediterranean atmosphere, so a wine tasting here is never going to be a rushed affair. Go for a sample of Pinot Noir, followed by a bottle chilled to the perfect temperature with half a dozen oysters or some homemade pate with a crusty baguette, and you'll be in a wine-tasting heaven that you'll be reluctant to leave.

128 East 6th Street

Pali Wine Company

When you like wine tasting rooms with a touch of rustic class, you'll want to go for a wine tasting at the Pali Wine Company in Downtown Los Angeles. Here you'll be presented with a tasting flight of three or four different wines. Some are produced by the company and others by various different vintners from the California Central Coast wine-growing area and the Los Angeles County region.

The tasting rooms of the Pali Wine Company are open at 4 pm during the week and at midday on weekends. Wines to try here are the Chardonnay and the Pinot Noir, both of which are made with grapes from the Pali vineyard.

Unit 1A, 811 Traction Avenue

Malibu wine country near LA

Sometimes it's good to get away from the hype of LA and head into the hills for a day out, doing some wine tastings as you go. There are so many fantastic places you can go on wine tours to from Los Angeles that it makes choosing a singular destination really difficult. You won't want to miss some of the next ones, though.

Malibu Wine Safari & Hike

A Malibu Wine Safari is the ideal day out if you want to sneak in some wine tasting when you're traveling with kids. This winery is set on 1,000 acres where they don't just grow grapes but let wild animals loose to graze. If the zebras, camels, giraffes, and bison don't keep the kids amused, then nothing will.

Those animals also produce an amazing amount of natural fertilizer full of organic nutrients, which feeds the vines that produce Malibu wines. It's no wonder the wine from this Malibu winery is so appreciated by discerning palates and constantly gets rave reviews.

The animals might not be native, but here the emphasis is, of course, on Malibu wines. After a two-hour ride in an open-top jeep through their scenic vineyard and animal enclosures, you'll be treated to a wine tasting experience and a tour around Camp Cabernet, a trailer park, where there is definitely no Sauvignon blanc. That's in the Malibu Wines tasting room. Don't skip this place because Malibu Wines Safari is definitely a wine tour you can take, with a difference, in the best wine region in California.

32111 Mulholland Highway

Malibu Hikes with Wine Tasting

Some truly amazing trails lead through Malibu wine country and the Santa Monica mountains just outside of Los Angeles. Not going hiking there is almost as big a sin as not trying California wine while you're in Los Angeles.

If you decide you'd like to get your hiking shoes on when you're in Los Angeles and go wine tasting at the same time, forget about wine tasting rooms and check out the tours offered by Malibu Wine Hikes instead. This company has a hiking itinerary that will take you not just on some of the best trails in southern California but through some of the best vineyards too.

These wine hikes are all about getting back to nature, and there's really nothing more natural than grapes on the vine. If you're not the hiking kind, don't worry, you can also take a tour through the vineyards of Saddleback Ranch on horseback. You can also do it in a converted Volkswagen bus, complete with music from the 80s, just to add some extra atmosphere. What could possibly be better than California wine and music from the Beach Boys? The only other thing you could possibly want is some surf to go with it.

If you have any common sense, you'll do the hikes through the Santa Monica Mountains before you start on the wine tasting because sometimes doing it the other way around can have undesired effects.

The 6 Best Wineries and Tasting Rooms in Los Angeles

O nce upon a time, Los Angeles was known as The City of Vines. There were over 100 wine producers in the area. The success of the wine industry throughout California (which began in the 18th century with the Spanish missions) was built upon the labor of indigenous workers and other immigrants. Once the missions became secularized, both Mexican and European people established vineyards on those lands. One of those immigrants was Jean Louis Vignes, a Frenchman who cultivated 100 acres of vines and citrus in the original Pueblo of Los Angeles where Union Station is today.

When California became part of the United States in 1850, Los Angeles much more rural that it is today, and yet it was still the epicenter of California wine. By the 1850s and 60s, the progression of the wine industry was in full swing, with German winemakers Frohling and Kohler leading the way.

The wine industry took a big hit in the 1880s when Pierce’s disease (which kills the leaves on the grapevines) struck hard. Following that period, Prohibition , urbanization, and the proliferation of citrus farms marked the end of Los Angeles as the epicenter of California win e. But there are still Los Angeles wineries that are well worth a visit on your next trip.

Today, there’s a new chapter being written on Los Angeles wine production. Los Angeles wineries and tasting rooms are once again thriving in Los Angeles County, although most people probably consider Napa the true heart of California wine.

Along with a small group of winemakers dedicated to reviving interest in crafting wines of high quality from Los Angeles County fruit, other winemakers are opening tasting rooms, but growing or buying their fruit elsewhere. These Los Angeles wineries will surprise and delight you, and offer a urban setting to sip your wine — an interesting change of pace from the usual rural setting where vineyards are usually located. From chic Malibu tasting rooms to the oldest existing winery in Los Angeles, these five tasting rooms provide a selection of what’s available in The City of Vines.

The best Los Angeles wineries to visit

San antonio winery.

los angeles wineries-san antonio winery exterior

San Antonio Winery has been located at the original address on Lamar Street since 1917, though the vineyards are long gone. Owned by the Riboli family, the namesake wines produced under the Maddalena label pay tribute to the matriarch of the winery. Maddalena also had the vision to start a restaurant on site (called, appropriately, Maddalena Restaurant) and to purchase vineyards in Napa Valley, Monterey County, and Paso Robles.

San Antonio Winery has a large selection of wines including sparkling wines, white and red wines, and sweet wines. The winery has survived the urbanization of Los Angeles, Pierce’s Disease, and prohibition, by producing wine for the Catholic Church. San Antonio Winery is a look back into Los Angeles’ golden age of winemaking. Don’t miss it.

The winery is open for tastings and tours. Both the winery and the restaurant are open daily.

Strange Family Vineyards

Strange Family Vineyards has a beautiful tasting room located off of Pacific Coast Highway about a mile from the Malibu Pier. There is also seating outdoors and the tasting room is dog friendly. Inside there’s a map of the Santa Rita AVA (American Viticulture Area) where the estate vineyards are located with soil samples should you care to educate yourself on what type of vines grow best in different environments.

Strange Family Vineyards produces Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from organic estate fruit grown in the Santa Rita vineyards. They also make sparkling wine in the methode champenoise, in other words, the traditional process used to make champagne in France. Three different bottles of sparkling wines are produced: a cuvée, blanc de blanc, and blanc de noir. Fruit for the winery’s Syrah is sourced in Santa Barbara County.

Tastings are $32 per person and reservations are recommended especially on weekends. Grab a glass or a bottle and settle into one of the cozy sofas tucked inside the tasting room.

Cavaletti Vineyards

Cavaletti Vineyards is one of several winemakers in Ventura County with a passion for bringing back the high-quality wines of the region. The tasting room, located in Moorpark, about an hour from Los Angeles, is a no frills experience that may feature the vineyard owner’s dog and fermenting fruit nearby. Cavatelli farms and sources all fruit from nearby Ventura County, Los Angeles County, and the Santa Ynez Valley.

Cavaletti produces a wide variety of wines from lesser known varieties like Alicante Bouschet, and Nebbiolo, as well as the more well known varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon. Currently, there are sixteen different bottlings. Where: 165 Poindexter Ave Suite D, Moorpark, CA 93021

Angeleno Wine Company

Angeleno Winery, along with Cavaletti, is dedicated to putting Los Angeles back on the map as a wine destination. The winery sources fruit from small, family-owned, Los Angeles county vineyards and strives to make wines that are elegant and balanced, reflecting the character of Los Angeles, a region where the desert meets the sea.

Angeleno Winery specializes in wine varieties that only the most dedicated wine experts will be familiar with, including Graciano, Verdejo, and Tannat, and only in small batches: The winery produces around 2000 cases per year.

The winery is pet friendly and open on weekends only. It also allows outside food so bring your lunch or order something to be delivered after you arrive. Reservations are recommended.

Malibu Wines And Beer Garden

If you’re looking for more to drink than just wine, Malibu Wines and Beer Garden might be the place for you. The Mission-style building is almost 100 years old and was built by a silent film star. Weekends are busy with activities like yoga in the garden, local craft sales, and food trucks. You should also know that the current owners have an 1100 acre ranch where they grow all the fruit for the Saddlerock Estate label wines.

It’s worth a visit just to taste wines made from grapes grown in the Malibu AVA. Try the estate sparkling rosé. The other label is Saddlerock––those grapes are from Northern California vineyards. Malibu Wine Hikes is the winery’s sister company, which specializes in excursions that end in gorgeous views with a bottle of wine and many photo ops. The hikes actually take you through the Saddlerock vineyards.

Summer Somewhere Wines

Summer Somewhere owner Stacy, a designer, and Billy, a winemaker, developed their flagship rosé of Pinot Noir for their wedding, which eventually turned into a thriving wine business. The couple source fruit from vineyards located in Santa Barbara County, an area known for excellent Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

Summer Somewhere has a tiny tasting room within the swanky Fred Segal boutique in Malibu. They serve wine by the glass or the bottle specializing in rosé wines made in the Provencal style. Though known for their flagship rosé they also produce a Gruner Veltliner, Sauvignon Blanc, three bottlings of  Pinot Noir, two red blends, and a luscious ripe Syrah.

Summer Somewhere at Fred Segal is located right across the street from Strange Family Vineyards tasting room so you could easily stop by both on the same trip.

Sipping Your Way Through Temecula Wineries in Southern California’s Wine Region

N apa Valley and Sonoma County are well-known California wine regions. However, don’t count out Southern California when it comes to wine. Among all the activities to see and do in Southern California, visitors may not think to include wine tasting in their itineraries. But SoCal owes its wine roots to the Temecula Valley, located between San Diego and Los Angeles, which offers first-class wine tasting worthy of a visit.

The first time I experienced the Temecula Valley wine region was planning a large group tour. It was an ideal way to experience wine tasting in “my backyard” and was the perfect backdrop for our group to enjoy a day away. It’s an easy add-on trip for anyone coming to Southern California because of the wonderful weather, friendly wineries, and diverse wine and dining options all in one place. Here’s how you can discover all this region has to offer.

Why Visit the Temecula Wineries?

The Temecula Valley wine region covers 33,000 acres and is home to nearly 50 wineries. It is an hour north of San Diego and within 90 minutes of other Southern California cities such as Los Angeles and Anaheim. According to Devin Parr, brand marketing partner at the Temecula Valley Winegrowers Association, two dozen grape varieties grow in the region, including Syrah, Tempranillo, and Sangiovese. This is due in part because Temecula’s climate mirrors many Mediterranean climates in popular wine regions such as Italy and Spain.

“This diversity of grapes and wine styles makes Temecula Valley an ideal region for discovery and a place where there is a wine for every type of wine drinker,” she says.

Wine tasting fees range from $20 to $40, and include five to eight tastings and often a souvenir wine glass; one of the more affordable wine regions in California. The region’s history dates back to 1968 when the first grapes were planted.

“The region also offers tons of unique experiences, from wine blending labs to wine and wellness, to horseback riding and hot air balloons, live music, and more,” shares Parr. “There’s even a winery with a huge on-site vintage motorcycle collection and a company that offers motorcycle sidecar rides through wine country.”

How To Get around the Valley

Getting around the Temecula Valley’s wine region, located within hillsides and valleys, will require vehicle use, despite some being close to each other. You can plan your own itinerary and drive yourself, use day shuttles, or book a guided tour. If you want to leave the driving to someone else — a reasonable consideration when drinking wine — there are several transportation options in Temecula Valley. Transportation and tours can also depart from San Diego or other starting destinations in Southern California.

Grapeline Wine Tours

Grapeline Wine Tours, one of the top-rated Temecula activities according to TripAdvisor, offers shared group tours , including transportation, three or four wine tastings, a wine guide, and more, starting at $129 per person, departing from Temecula itself. For a luxury experience for a party of 6, they also offer five-hour SUV tours, starting at $325 per person.

They also offer customizable private group tours, which can originate from anywhere in Southern California. Pricing depends on location and other inclusions. I’ve done several Grapeline Tours, both on a public tour and other times planning a larger group tour, and I recommend this as a top-notch experience from their knowledgeable team.

Temecula Wine Cable Car Wine Tours

Temecula Wine Cable Car Wine Tours offer one of the more unique wine tour experiences on a historic, open-air, restored 1914 cable car that once ran on the streets of San Francisco. Their tours visit three wineries (from a list of fifteen partner wineries), complete with a wine guide, bottled water, and snacks, starting at $109 per person.  They can be booked online or by phone. They also offer custom, private tours every day except Tuesdays and Wednesdays. I haven’t tried one of these yet, but I would love to experience an open-air tour around the Valley.

What To Know Before You Choose a Winery or Wine Trail

One of the hardest parts about planning the ideal winery itinerary is catering to the varying styles, tastes, and choices among group members and the large number of wineries to choose from. Luckily, the Visit Temecula Valley winery page can aid in the planning with its comprehensive list of wineries in the region. You can search by varietal, location, other amenities, or by one of three areas or wine trails. I’ve always chosen a Grapeline tour, but I would use this guide to plan a future visit.

You can also choose to follow the paths of one of three wine trails. Their names are derived from the roads in which they are located and can be done in any order or as one-off visits. As the region continues to expand, there’s still a smattering of off-the-beaten-path wineries that haven’t been added to a trail yet.

Rancho California Wine Trail

The twenty wineries along Rancho California Road offer the most variety and are some of the most notable because they are located on what is considered the main road in the wine region. You’ll want to check out the Baily Winery, a staple in the Valley for over thirty years, and Ponte Family Estate Winery, the largest in the region. Avensole Winery offers wines inspired by the family’s roots in Austria, and Thornton Winery resembles a French-style chateau complete with a cafe, garden, and several champagne offerings.

De Portola Wine Trail

Along De Portola Road, you’ll find another eleven wineries with heavy Spanish and Italian influence. According to their website , the wineries are located on the “new wine row” in Temecula and consider themselves a cooperative family of properties striving to bring wine and people together. If you’re looking to follow a trail with fewer people, this is the trail for you.

Pro Tip: One of the more unique experiences is the Oak Mountain Winery, which features the only underground wine cave in Southern California, fruit-based champagnes, and a café.

Calle Contento Wine Trail

The third main trail is a street through the Valley along Calle Contento, which translates to “Happy Street.” Eight wineries are along this smaller and less traveled road in the region. It’s worth the visitettings such as cottage-style, ranch-style, and farm-style properties to experience s and diverse wine styles such as Bordeaux and Tuscan.

Pro Tip: On a previous visit, the Peltzer Farm and Winery was the happening spot along the trail. On a sunny Sunday afternoon, it was packed with visitors, live music, and food trucks. You can check out their website for all of their events and happenings.

Favorite winery recommendations.

Since my groups’ and I have ventured to Temecula Valley’s wine region more than once, we have enjoyed the diversity of flavors, vineyards, and ambiance at each property we’ve experienced. These wineries have stood out during our visits—so much so that they keep us returning with every trip.

Maurice Car’rie Winery and Ultimate Vineyards

Maurice Car’rie Winery and Ultimate Vineyards is Temecula’s original winery, with a lot of character, charm, and history. I enjoy sipping several of the 27 wines produced inside their Victorian-style farmhouse and tasting room.

The best part of my visit is indulging in their baked Brie Sourdough bread bowl, which makes this a must-dostop on any itinerary. It’s open Sunday through Thursday, 11 am until 5 pm, Friday, 11 am until 6 pm, and Saturday, 11 am to 6:30 pm. Weekday tastings are $25 per person and $30 for weekend tastings.

Miramonte Winery

Miramonte Winery, which Fodor’s Travel calls “Temeculas Hippest Winery,” is one of my favorites because of its hillside views of the valley, along with it’s friendly atmosphere. They have over a dozen wines, including two sangrias and their Opulente, a red blend.

A bistro and live music on the weekend also help make it a popular and happening spot. A six-sampling tasting is $25 on weekdays and $30 on weekends, and they are open Monday to Thursday, 11 am until 6 pm, Friday, 11 am until 8 pm, and Sunday, 11 am to 6 pm.

Wilson Creek Winery

One reason I recommend Wilson Creek Winery is the expansive grounds on the 90-acre property, offering several settings for tastings, including getting away from the crowds, but compact enough that it’s not too much walking. You can sip some of their wines, including their signature Almond Champagne, by the creek and in several patio areas.

Since my last visit, they’ve expanded to serve as an event, conference, or retreat space if you’re looking to host a special event or group. Their six-sample wine tasting costs $25 on weekdays and $30 on weekends and is open Sunday to Thursday, 10 am to 6 pm, and 10 am to 8 pm on Fridays.

Callaway Vineyard and Winery

If you’re on a pre-planned wine tour, Callaway is often on every itinerary because of its 50-year legacy in the region. I appreciate their vast wine offerings and the behind-the-scenes tour offered during a visit. The Meritage Restaurant is known for its farm-to-table food with a picture-perfect view of the hillside below. And yes, the winery is named for Ely Callaway, who found success as the head of the Callaway golf company.

Make It a Weekend Getaway

If one day of wine tasting isn’t enough, the Temecula Valley wine region offers various overnight accommodations. Ten wineries provide a combination of stays with vineyard views, dining, and spa services. There is also a selection of hotels, vacation rentals, and other accommodations in Wine Country separate from the winery properties. There’s an option for every group size, taste, style, and budget.  I’ve only done day trips to the Valley, but for a truly immersive experience, spending the night amongst the vines would be a desirable weekend away from city life.

South Coast Winery Resort and Spa

In addition to sipping their wine selections, this South Coast Winery Resort and Spa is a 38-acre property on Rancho California Road that offers the ultimate all-in-one location for a wine-country weekend because you have everything you need in one place. Their GrapeSeed Spa provides visitors with some pampering, a choice of suite or villa, and dining at the Vineyard Rose Restaurant. You can bring your pet for an additional fee, and they offer a “Happy Hound” program for visiting pets.

Carter Estate Winery and Resort

Carter Estate Winery and Resort, a sister property to South Coast, is another option for an overnight all-in-one stay. The Vineyard Grill is the resort’s full-service restaurant, and the resort features bungalows, suites, and poolside spa services. It’s also pet-friendly, so furry family members can tag along.

Pro Tip: They even offer a discount for AAA members.

Europa Village Wineries, Resort and Spa

Europa Village Wineries Resort and Spa is a collection of three properties that resemble the feel of classic European Villages. Bolero represents Spain and offers private casitas and the Hillside Inn. You’ll feel like you’re in France at C’est la Vie, featuring a wine cave. Vienza, the newest property, offers an escape to Italy with Italian wines and a restaurant. I haven’t had a chance to fully explore this newer property in the Valley, but I plan to come back and enjoy a mini European adventure.

Somerset Vineyard and Winery

Somerset Vineyard and Winery, a 14-acre vineyard along the De Portola Wine Trail, offers wines from parts of Southern France and parts of Spain. It features the Somerset Estate, a private rental house on the property where guests can wake up to the sights and sounds of the vineyard.

Dine at the Temecula Wineries

We’ve already mentioned a few of the 21 wineries in Temecula Valley that offer an on-site dining experience. To enhance your wine-tasting adventures, plan your itinerary around possible lunch stops. Many offer menu pairings with their wine choices.

If you’re looking for a more casual experience, many wineries welcome outside food and feature prime picnic spots to enjoy it. Others have food trucks on the premises, ready to serve winery guests. Combining food with live music or other entertainment has turned the Temecula Valley wine region into the ultimate destination for any occasion.

A wine-tasting adventure in Temecula Valley will satisfy a novice or seasoned wine enthusiast. Temecula Valley offers diverse varietals and settings ranging from rustic to modern. It’s one of Southern California’s best-kept secrets, and it’s right in my backyard. I appreciate that each time I return, I can experience something new while remaining affordable, down-to-earth, and delicious.

Best time to visit, how to get there, how to get around.

As a newly minted resident of Portugal , I am here to tell you, every single square inch of it is beautiful. But there's something extra special about the Douro Valley.

Located in the northern region of Portugal, the Douro Valley is as enchanting a place as they come. Its rolling hills — punctuated by perfectly aligned vineyard vines, which are a testament to the agricultural dedication of local farmers dating back thousands of years — give away to winding river views that go on for as far as the eye can see. In the summer, the word "verdant" doesn't do the greenery justice, and come fall, the dazzling foliage takes over.

"The Douro Valley is renowned for its breathtaking beauty, steeped in centuries of winemaking history," Madalena Dinis, director of marketing and communication for the Porto and northern Portugal tourism board, told Travel + Leisure . "Notably, the Douro is the oldest demarcated wine region in the world, which adds a historical richness to its vineyards and winemaking traditions. It’s a haven for wine enthusiasts and a perfect place for anyone seeking a serene escape in nature. The region’s rich culinary traditions and the warmth of its people make it an inviting destination for all."

Ready to see it for yourself? Here are the best places to stay, attractions to see, and vineyards to visit on your next trip to Douro Valley.

Top 5 Can’t Miss

  • Don't miss the fantastic views from around the riverbanks, especially at sunset.
  • Indulge in all the wonderful spa treatments offered in the Douro Valley hotels.
  • Book a table at one of the hotel restaurants for a taste of delicious regional Portuguese cuisine.
  • The easiest way to explore the area's fantastic history is by taking a ride on its Historical Train.
  • Taste the fruit of the valley during a wine tasting at any of the area's vineyards. None of them will disappoint.

Best Hotels and Resorts

Courtesy of Six Senses Hotels Resorts Spas

Six Senses Douro Valley

The Six Senses was voted one of the best resorts in Portugal and Spain by T+L readers in the 2023 World's Best Awards, and it's easy to see why. The 19th-century manor-turned-hotel sits amid the terraced vineyards and offers spacious suites for you to call home. Here, guests can also indulge in spa treatments, walk the organic gardens, dig into locally sourced meals, and yes, enjoy plenty of wine tastings, too.

Lamego Hotel & Life

Lamego Hotel & Life is tailor-made for those seeking a more modern experience. The property's contemporary design, which includes a clean-lined pool surrounded by neutral-toned chaise loungers, provides the utmost relaxing atmosphere. Guests here can also swim in the indoor pool on chillier days, get a treatment at the L'Occitane spa, and indulge in traditional Portuguese cuisine at the restaurant, O Comendador. The hotel is also within walking distance of regional cultural landmarks, including Lamego Cathedral and the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Remedies.

Quinta de la Rosa

Perched on a bend in the Douro River, Quinta de la Rosa offers a family-style stay so guests can feel immersed in the destination. Calling it a "hotel" is a bit of a misnomer, as the rooms are sprinkled all over the property, giving everyone a sense of solitude during their stay. When ready for a meal, guests are invited to Cozinha da Clara (or Clara's Kitchen) for a regionally inspired meal.

Vidago Palace

A few nights at Vidago Palace , a historic hotel set in a centuries-old forest, is bound to make you feel like royalty. The palace was the vision of King Carlos, who wanted to build a luxury spa to entice a global clientele — and he succeeded. Here, visitors will find opulence at every turn, from the grand staircase in the entryway to the manicured gardens, rooms with leather furnishings, and a thermal spa that will undoubtedly undo all your aches and pains.

Best Things to Do

Octavio Passos/Getty Images

Drink in the view at São Salvador do Mundo.

While the Douro Valley is beautiful from every angle, the São Salvador do Mundo viewpoint allows visitors to take in all of its splendor at once. Located high on the riverbank, this vantage point offers a sweeping view of the water and terraced vineyards. Plus, it's a prime spot for admiring the sunset. There's also a tiny chapel at the top, along with pre-Roman remains.

Get to know the land at Côa Valley Archaeological Park.

The Côa Valley Archaeological Park , located about a one-hour drive from the heart of the Douro region, offers a glimpse into not just Portugal's past, but into humanity's. The museum and open-air gallery are home to an extensive collection of Paleolithic rock carvings, some dating as far back as 30,000 years ago. The museum itself is a sight to behold, made out of a natural-colored cement that blends seamlessly into the landscape. But don't stop there — continue on to explore the park via a guided tour so you don't miss a thing.

Take a boat tour.

Get a whole new perspective of the valley during a boat tour down the river. There are several local operators offering tours, from quick river trips to multiday cruises. For something even more unique, Anima Durius hosts trips on super-cool small vessels, including classic wooden boats and a few handsome sailboats.

Hop aboard the Historical Train.

Travel back in time with a ride on Douro's Historical Train . The trip, which runs between Régua and Tua, hugs the banks of the river, providing beautiful videos from the five historical carriages. Passengers can also expect entertainment and even a few little gifts on board.

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

Quinta do Seixo

Quinta do Seixo , located along the banks of the river, goes on for nearly 250 acres. The winery is well-known for its modern winemaking center that pairs perfectly with its traditional vineyard farming. Guests can come for a tour and tasting led by one of the vineyard's experts.

Quinta da Pacheca

Quinta da Pacheca has been producing wine since 1738, making it one of the Douro's oldest estates. Here, guests can opt for the traditional tastings, book a picnic lunch or dinner to enjoy among the vines, or visit in the fall to experience the olive oil harvest. As for where to stay, you can book one of the vineyard's massive wine barrels turned glamping sites , which have become popular thanks to Instagram.

Quinta das Carvalhas

Quinta das Carvalhas is younger than Quinta da Pacheca, but not by much. It began producing wines in 1759 and has been a prominent vineyard in the region ever since. Here, guests can go on guided tours, which include climbing the hillside landscape for a 360-degree view of the Douro Valley and learning all about the history of viticulture along the way.

The best time to visit the Douro Valley, according to locals, is really whenever you'd like.  "Whether you prefer the vibrant colors of spring, the bustling atmosphere of harvest season, or the serene tranquility of winter, there's never a wrong time to visit the Douro Valley, Richard Bowden, the director of marketing and communications at the Six Senses Douro Valley, shared with T+L.  "Each season offers its own distinct charm and allure for travelers." While he has a hard time picking a favorite, Bowden notes the grape harvest season, which runs from September to October, "is a particularly vibrant time to visit, as the vineyards are ablaze with autumn colors, and many wineries offer special events and experiences."

If you had to choose, the most optimal time to visit is usually between late spring and early autumn (May to September), when the days are sunny, long, and warm. All that adds up to lovely days made for hiking, wine tasting, or cruising down the river. However, if you want to stretch your trip into late October, you'll catch the olive harvest season, too.

By Car: Driving is the easiest way to reach and explore the Douro Valley. From Porto, it's about a 1.5- to two-hour drive via the A4 motorway and N222 road. With this drive, it really is about the journey and the destination, as the N222 road is often regarded as one of the most beautiful drives in the world thanks to its green hillsides and plenty of viewpoints. From Lisbon, you can make it to the Douro Valley in about 3.5 hours. It's not as glamorous of a drive, but it will get you there.

By Train: For a more relaxing alternative, try the train. The Linha do Douro (Douro Line) runs from Porto’s São Bento or Campanhã stations to Pocinho, passing through Régua, Pinhão, and Tua along the way. It, too, is known for its picturesque landscapes en route, including right along the river's edge, making it a pleasant journey.

By Car: Again, it's easiest to bring your own car when visiting the Douro Valley, as things are quite spread out. This way, you can see all the sights in your own time. Travelers can rent a car from either Porto or Lisbon; companies like Avis, Hertz, and Alamo all have stations in each city.

Tour Guide: If you're not comfortable driving on the narrow, winding roads, you can hire a private tour guide. There are plenty of local (and knowledgeable) guides ready to whisk you away to all their favorite spots, including some off-the-beaten-path gems.
