Where to Go Wine Tasting in Ojai Valley, California

Of the dozens of impressive wine regions of California , the Ojai Valley (pronounced Oh-Hi) is one of my favorites for a relaxed and charming weekend wine getaway. The Ojai wineries have a laidback and welcoming vibe to pair with fantastic wine tasting.

Located 90 miles north of Los Angeles and only 30 miles from Santa Barbara (another great wine tasting region), Ojai is accessible as a day trip from nearby cities but it also makes a fantastic weekend trip complete with great wineries, fun lunch spots, and restaurants. Wine tasting in Ojai is exactly how you want it to be.

As you drive into the region, you’ll be greeted by the looming mountain range and citrus groves that line the valley. There are olive orchards, orange and lemon trees, and sprawling family ranches. And vineyards surrounding it all.

For a town of only around 8,000 inhabitants, Ojai has quite a bit to offer traveling foodies. If you’re planning a trip to this area, be sure to check out some of these Ojai wineries, maybe have a picnic in the countryside, then save some time to explore the town and its lively tasting rooms.

How Much Does Wine Tasting Cost?

Wine tasting in California has gotten quite a bit more expensive in the past few years. Gone are the days of free tastings. In fact, many regions are charging $20-40 per tasting. With this fee, you’ll get around 5 wine tasting pours. You can share a tasting at most places, which will cut down on the cost of it, and help you manage your intake.

Something I’m excited to tell you about is the  Priority Wine Pass , which helps me tasting fees a lot easier to swallow. The Pass is simply the easiest way to  save on wine tasting  in California.

Show your card at any of the over  300+ wineries  that accept the pass and start saving money. Many of the wine tasting discounts are 2-for-1. That means you and your tasting partner only pay for one tasting. If the winery usually charges $25 per tasting, you save $25. The pass is valid 365 days from the day you purchase it. It’s pretty awesome. We buy a new one every year. It’s good in California, Washington, and Oregon .

6 Ojai Wineries to Visit [Plus a Brewery!]

The downtown area is small, but incredibly charming. It was rebuilt in 1917, after a fire wiped out most of the original town, in the Spanish Colonial Revival style. The design includes a Spanish-style arcade (left side of the photo below), a bell tower (right side) and a pergola (not pictured).

The historic buildings have been transformed into modern storefronts for a dozens or so cute little shops, restaurants and wine tasting rooms along the main street, East Ojai Avenue.

The Ojai Vineyard

Ojai Vineyard

The Ojai Vineyard tasting room is housed in a redesigned colonial-style building near the end of the downtown area. They’ve been producing wines since 1983.

The large room is always full of tasters, sipping and swirling, which is how you know the wine is something special. The first thing you’ll likely notice when you enter the tasting room is the wall of wine that lines the back wall. It’s easy to become mesmerized by the sheer number of bottles. But it’s not just all for show.

Ojai wines

There are actually 300 different wines that can be bought or enjoyed at the tasting room. A typical tasting flight at The Ojai Vineyard includes five wines. We particularly like their Syrah, but they also have fantastic aged Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Rose and a sweet Reisling.

They don’t serve food, but you can bring your own to enjoy with your wines.

Location: 109 S Montgomery St, Ojai, CA 93023 Hours: Daily 12pm – 5pm

Casa Barranca

Casa Barranca

Also located on the main street, in the Ojai historic arcade, is the laid-back, colonial-style tasting room of Casa Barranca , where you can sit at the bar or nearby tables to enjoy the flight of 5 unique organic wines, including one of the region’s best Pinot Noirs, a Sangiovese, Cab Franc and Merlot.

Casa Barranca is the first certified organic winery in the Santa Barbara region. They make their wine using from organic and biodynamic grapes and a traditional gravity method for racking the wine.

Location: 208 E Ojai Ave, Ojai, CA 93023 Hours: Daily 12pm – 5pm (6pm on Friday and Saturday)

Majestic Oak Vineyards

Majestic Oak Vineyards

When you’re walking around downtown Ojai, you must stop by the Majestic Oak Vineyard tasting room that is located right on Ojai Ave, down a flight of stairs. They have a lovely wine tasting patio that’s shaded by vines where you can enjoy a tasting of their wines.

The winery was started in 2015 and is a small boutique family winery where everything from harvest, crush and bottling is done all by hand on the property.

There’s no need for a reservation as all tastings are first come-first serve. A flight of 5 wines is $18 and includes 2 whites and 3 reds: a Rose, Pinot Gris, Syrah and Sangiovese.

Location: 321 E Ojai Ave, Ojai, CA 93023 Hours: Daily 12pm – 6pm

Boccali Vineyards

If you’re in town on the weekend, you’ll also want to check out Boccali Vineyards . A family-owned winery, Boccali produces 100% estate wines, made from fruit grown on the Boccali Ranch in the Upper Ojai Valley.

They are only open for tastings at Boccali’s Restaurant in Ojai (3277 E. Ojai Avenue) on Saturday and Sunday from 12-5 pm. No reservations are needed. The Boccali family also owns a pizza and pasta restaurant with two locations in the area.

Old Creek Ranch Winery

Old Creek Ranch Winery

As you drive into Ojai on Route 33, we recommend taking a slight detour onto E. Old Creek Road to visit the Old Creek Ranch Winery . The ranch was bought by the Holguin Family in 2015 and has undergone some lovely changes, including a new wine tasting room and the addition of a huge picnic area with tables and relaxing couch and chairs, many with outstanding views of the vineyard.

It’s the place to be on a sunny weekend. You can choose a spot with chairs around a firepit, or a vine-covered pergola, or a picnic table where you can pair your food with a tasting.

ojai wine

As far as tasting go, they have a 6-wine flight of either all whites, all reds, or a mix. They come out in small carafes on an old wine barrel stave, so you can pour them as you’re ready, along with tasting notes.

We really enjoyed the El Camino from Kiler Canyon, made with Syrah, Grenache, Petite Sirah & Viogneir with aromas of dark chocolate, raspberry & sage. There were quite a few sage bushes around, so the lovely smell of sage is in the air.

Location: 10024 E Old Creek Rd, Ventura, CA 93001 Hours: Thursday – Sunday 11 AM – 5 PM Reservations Recommended

Topa Topa Brewery

topa topa brewery

A Ventura brewery, Topa Topa fits right into the scenery in Ojai. It’s just around the corner from The Ojai Vineyard and it has a fantastic open patio where you can get a beer tasting flight and sit in the sun to enjoy it.

You can get a flight of four different beers to try, like the Dos Topas Lager, the Chief Peak IPA, and definitely the Ojai Pixie IPA (when in season). If you can, grab a spot outside (there are heaters in cooler weather).

Topa Topa and Little Sama

Inside the tasting room is a window where you can order food from Little Sama, a southeast Asian fusion restaurant with great lunch options, from bowls to sandwiches, and the best Okonomiyaki tots you’ll ever try.

Location: 345 E Ojai Ave A, Ojai, CA 93023 Hours: Open every day. M-F 12pm-9pm; S-S 11am-9pm

Where to Eat in Ojai

I highly recommend bringing a picnic with you to enjoy at one of the wineries with picnic space. However, if you’d rather check out one of the restaurants in town for lunch, we recommend checking out one of these:

  • Little Sama
  • Jim & Rob’s Fresh Grill Ojai
  • Ojai Pizza Company

Dinner is another occasion to enjoy the great food options in Ojai. If you’re staying downtown, try Nocciola or Rory’s Place for fresh local ingredients.

You can dine alfresco at The Oak at the Ojai Valley Inn, indulge in hearty Italian dishes at Olivella, or grab a seat at Ojai Beverage Company where you can continue your exploration of the area’s beer and wine selection.

Where to Stay in Ojai

If you’re planning to make Ojai a weekend getaway (and we highly recommend doing so), you can’t go wrong staying at the Ojai Valley Inn . It has beautiful updated rooms, a nice large pool for those steamy days, and a nice restaurant and bar area.

We are residents of Ojai and belong to several of the wineries in town. You left out one of our favorites right downtown on Ojai Ave, Majestic Oaks.

Thanks for the recommendation!

As expected, Topa Mountain Winery is located in the shadow of the Topatopa mountain range that skirts its way along this region of Southern California. Taking full advantage of the beauty of the land, Topa Mountain Winery has established itself as a great place to stop along your Ojai wine tour route.

They have a lovely tasting room with lots of outdoor space on the covered patio and surrounding picnic area. On the weekends, you’ll find a very lively scene with live music and families out enjoying the sun. You can bring your children, your pets, and your picnics.

However, that said, you must make a reservation in advance and it’s always quite packed, so they open reservations at the beginning of the month, and those are snapped up very quickly.

The property also opens onto the Ojai Valley Bike Trail, which makes it a convenient stop on a biking or jogging excursion. They have a secure place to lock your bike while you pop into the tasting room for a flight.

In the process of blending, we are able to highlight certain flavors and profiles. That allows us to pare our wines toward a French style and away from the classic California 'fruit bomb' experience. Come and enjoy a real wine tasting experience!

New on our menu: 2023 Camp 4 Vermentino Our Vermentino comes from the rolling, oak-studded hills at Camp 4 vineyard in the Santa Ynez Valley. The warm and sunny climate is ideal for Vermentino, a grape native to both Italy and the south of France (where it is known as Rolle). In this patch of Santa Barbara County it makes for a summery wine that crackles with minerality and coats the palate with textural breadth—a perfect rut buster for both Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay devotees. This 2023 bottling has an airy and enticing perfume; scents of citrus blossom, green banana, and sweet almond flesh mingle with other teases of tropicality and smoky lees. It hits the palate with a burst of citrus and minerals, then roundness emerges with creamy white guava and almond. You find a unique combo of textural substance and weightlessness as it tapers out—there’s leesy richness, mineral grit, citrus rind, and a bit of salinity. It’s easy-going and delicious on its own, but it’s food-friendly as can be (just perfect with bright and fennel-y seafood dishes).

1. Santa Barbara County Wine Country (Santa Ynez Valley)

Nestled on a pristine stretch of California’s central coastline, just 1 ½ hours north of Los Angles, Santa Barbara County’s Wine Country offers world-class wines in a magnificent setting.

Santa Barbara Wine Country is known for its beautiful vineyards and many wine trails located among the County’s rolling hills and picturesque vineyards. There are over 250 wineries and over 70 different varietals grown in the region.

The transverse nature of the Santa Ynez Valley lends itself to a diverse range of wines produced here. Santa Barbara Wine Country and its acclaimed AVAs keep demonstrating that Santa Barbara is a world-class cool climate wine region and rival to its more well-known cousins up north (Napa & Sonoma).

Santa Barbara has established a reputation for world-class Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Syrah, but you’ll also find deep, rich Bordeaux, Rhône, Spanish and Italian varietals.

The diverse microclimates create 7 distinct certified American Viticultural Areas (AVAs) that are unique in geography, soil structure and climate, creating some of California’s most exciting and delicious wines.

3. Temecula Valley

Just a short distance south of` Los Angeles and near San Diego, and Orange County is Southern California’s Temecula Valley Wine Country.  Temecula is known for its laidback atmosphere where you can experience wonderful wines with beautiful views. The wineries include everything from small boutique family-owned wineries to large, sophisticated tasting rooms. The hospitality industry is thriving here, with restaurants, hotels, golf courses, breweries, distilleries and even a casino.

Temecula offers incredible curated activities including wine tours and epic hot air balloon experiences.

This warm region is cooled by Pacific Ocean wind and fog that flows through the “Rainbow Gap” of the Santa Margarita Mountains. The Valley has almost 50 wineries located among the region’s rolling hills and valleys producing a variety of wines, including award-winning and artisan Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir. Grapes that originate in warmer climates, like Sangiovese and Tempranillo, also do well.

Old Town Temecula is the historical hub of Temecula Valley. This charming walkable district includes restaurants, shops, beer, and wine tasting rooms, museums, speakeasies, outdoor art, a performance theater, and vibrant nightlife.

4. Malibu Wine Country

Malibu’s close proximity to Los Angeles makes for an easy, memorable and fun day of wine tasting.

Malibu is well known for its beautiful beaches, rocky cliffs, surfers, movie stars  and mansions. But more recently, it  has become known for its celebrated local wineries and tasting rooms.

This wine region is nestled within the Santa Monica Mountains, stretching between the Malibu coast and Mulholland highway to the north. The Malibu AVA is small with only a handful of wineries and tasting rooms to visit.

The wineries and tasting rooms are divided between the better known coastal areas and the picturesque Santa Monica Mountains with stunning canyon and mountain vistas.

Varietals planted are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc, Mourvedre, Grenache, Viognier, Malbec, Sangiovese, Petit Verdot, Chardonnay and others.

5. Ojai & Ventura County

Looking for a quiet, laid-back and uncrowded wine tasting experience? Visit Ventura and Ojai, in Ventura County, California.

Tucked away in a hidden valley one hour north of Los Angeles, the quaint town of Ojai lies in the scenic recessess of the Topa Topa Mountains, about 15 miles inland from the Pacific Coast. The Ojai Valley (pronounced Oh-hi) is home to great wine with over 6 tasting rooms and wineries.

Ojai is an easy getaway from Los Angeles and visitors can enjoy a walkable downtown, with shops, restaurants and numerous wine tasting rooms.

In addition to the many downtown wine tasting rooms, there are several wineries in a vineyard setting where you can sip among the vines!

The variety of minerals in the soil and the cold air that blows in from the ocean make the region particularly well suited for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, but Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon are also stars here.

Nearby towns of Ventura and Oxnard are  home to numerous boutique family owned wineries that serve delicious wine in an industrial atmosphere.

12 Unique Things to Do in Ojai California, a SoCal Hidden Gem

N estled in the Ojai Valley in Ventura County, between Los Angeles  and Santa Barbara, the small town of Ojai (population 7,590) is easy to miss unless you seek it out. This is why it’s a favorite getaway for Southern California  locals seeking respite from busy routines. From olive oil and wine tastings to wellness retreats and art galleries, there are many unique and fun things to do in Ojai.

What makes Ojai so special?

For one thing, Ojai has a unique location in an east-west valley, resulting in early sunrises and late sunsets. The latter is dubbed the “pink moment,” created when the setting sun casts a rosy glow over the Topatopa Mountains. Ojai is also fairly close to the beach (15 miles) and Lake Casitas (seven miles). And the Mediterranean climate makes outdoor activities possible year-round.

But it’s Ojai’s laid-back, bohemian lifestyle that attracts people to the town. Many of the locals moved to Ojai to escape the corporate world and reinvent themselves as artists, farmers, and small-town entrepreneurs.

This opens up opportunities for visitors to discover Ojai’s mom-and-pop businesses, farm fresh produce, art galleries, meditation/ wellness centers, and hotels – no two alike. You won’t find any chain establishments here.

In addition, hiking, horseback riding, and other outdoor activities offer ways to explore the scenic vistas. And don’t miss out on live music and spirited annual events like the Ojai Music Festival and Lavender Festival. Learn more about Ojai here .

1. Explore Downtown Ojai

Take a walk through the pedestrian-friendly downtown lined with art galleries featuring local artists, restaurants, and one-of-a-kind shops.
