Wine Tasting Tours of Vancouver Island

Southern Vancouver Island boasts two award-winning regions that welcome wine tasting tours , all within an easy day trip from town.

Disclaimer: I receive a small commission from some of the links on this page.

The history of wine on the island is a tale that intertwines the art of winemaking with the natural beauty of the region, offering a journey through time that culminates in the flourishing wine culture we see today.

Pouring wine into a line of glasses

The history of winemaking on Southern Vancouver Island dates back to the mid-19th century when European settlers recognized the region's potential for viticulture. Early attempts were made to cultivate grapes for wine, but it wasn't until the 20th century that the industry began to take root. Winemakers faced challenges, such as unpredictable weather and untested grape varieties, but the passion for creating exceptional wines prevailed.

Many people assume that commercial wine making in British Columbia started in the Okanagan when in fact it was right here in sunny Saanich back in 1921 with the Growers Wine Company.  The first wineries in the region set the stage for what would become a thriving industry.

Over the years, other notable wineries emerged, each contributing to the unique character of the region's wines. Venturing into the Cowichan Valley, Vancouver Island's wine country, wineries like Blue Grouse Estate Winery and Averill Creek Vineyard began making their mark with award-winning vintages. The valley's combination of cool ocean breezes and sun-kissed vineyards proved ideal for producing crisp whites and elegant reds.

As the wine industry on Southern Vancouver Island matured, so did the culture of wine tasting and wine tasting tours . Victoria became a hub for wine enthusiasts, offering a gateway to the diverse flavours awaiting discovery in the surrounding regions. Visitors now have the opportunity to explore a plethora of tasting rooms, each providing a unique ambiance and showcasing the craftsmanship of local winemakers.

The Cowichan Valley, often referred to as the "Napa of the North," has become synonymous with exceptional wine experiences. Visitors can embark on self-guided wine tours or join organized wine tasting tours , where they sample a variety of wines while learning about the winemaking process and the history of the region.

There are also numerous wine tasting tours just north of Victoria on the Saanich Peninsula.

Festivals and Events

Southern Vancouver Island hosts an array of wine-related festivals and events that celebrate the local wine culture.

The annual  Cowichan Valley Wine Festival and V ictoria International Wine Festival , attracts wine enthusiasts from near and far. The festivals offer educational opportunities, seminars, live entertainment, wine dinners and of course a chance to savour the best wines from the region.

Our region is a natural destination for wine tasting tours . Choose a self-guided tour (with a designated driver) or sit back, relax and let a local guide chauffeur you to the region’s finest vineyards. Use a trusted company like Viator to book your wine tasting tours .

For a typical private wine tasting tour, the guide will pick you up at a mutually agreed upon location such as your hotel or the Port of Victoria if you have arrived by cruise ship.

Depending on the length of tour you selected, you may have time for a quick tour of Victoria’s Inner Harbour area, the historic Chinatown district or the quaint neighbourhood of James Bay. James Bay boasts some of the oldest homes in the region with well-preserved examples of Victorian architecture as well as the birthplace of Group of Seven artist, Emily Carr, among other highlights.

Both wine tasting tour options are exceptional choices with beautiful vineyards and award-winning wines. The Cowichan tour comes highly recommended though as it is home to some of the oldest and largest vineyards.

With the Cowichan tour you can expect to be quickly whisked out of the city and within minutes find yourself amidst an old-growth temperate rain forest on Malahat Drive. Enjoy a picturesque 20 minutes as you traverse the Malahat (sometimes just called the “hat”) and near the top, your driver will stop for photos at a scenic lookout spot overlooking Saanich Inlet. On a clear day you can see Mount Baker in Washington State in the distance.

This lookout is one of my favourite spots to take visitors to the Island.

Mount Baker from Victoria BC

You will typically make about 3 or 4 stops on this tour with an average of 4 tastings at each. You may also mix it up a bit and delight your palate with a cidery stop. The stops on your tour may be dependent on the time of year, time of day and day of the week that you are booked on. Check the itinerary options when you book.

Lunch at the Unsworth Vineyard Restaurant or The Eatery at Merridale Cidery & Distillery comes highly recommended.

Saanich Peninsula Wine Tasting Tours

Bottle of cider from Sea Cider near Victoria BC

The second wine tasting tour option that is a little closer to downtown Victoria is the wineries, cideries and distilleries of the Saanich Peninsula.

A typical tour might include stops at Sea Cider for excellent ciders and views, then on to the highly awarded Church and State Winery . Once at Church and State you will be encouraged to dine at the Bistro in addition to savouring your tastings.

A final stop on this tour could be De Vine where you can choose between wines or spirits. This is a popular tour booked through Viator.

Remember with a private guide, wine tasting tours can be customized to meet the specific interests of your party. Local tour guides know all the back-roads, where the construction is and where the best views are. They are able to whisk you around the region, ensuring a memorable excursion with the perfect blend of narrated tour, scenic views, distinct, award-winning vineyards and of course, photo ops!

With thousands of visitors every day in Victoria, these tours book up quickly. Don’t be disappointed, book yours today.

Top Wineries Of Vancouver Island

Top Wineries Of Vancouver Island

Let’s explore the top wineries of Vancouver Island! Nestled off the southwestern coast of British Columbia, Canada, a unique microclimate known for its stunning natural beauty, diverse landscapes, and a thriving wine culture is ready for you to explore.

Kelowna Wine & Craft Beer Tours 2

While the region is famous for its rugged coastlines, abundant wildlife, and of course BC’s beautiful capital city, Victoria , it is also home to a growing number of world-class wineries. These wineries have quickly gained recognition for their exceptional wines, scenic vineyard settings, and the island’s unique terroir.  Looking for just one more reason to finally check out Vancouver Island for yourself?  This may be it!

The top wineries of Vancouver Island all share one common thread. The island’s unique climate and geography create a terroir that is conducive to the cultivation of a multitude of grape varietals. Vancouver Island experiences a milder, maritime climate compared to the mainland, with cooler temperatures and more rainfall. This climate, along with well-drained soils, offers the ideal conditions for growing grapes with vibrant acidity and intense flavours.

Kelowna Wine & Craft Beer Tours 4

Cool-climate varietals such as Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris thrive in these conditions, and many wineries are also producing high calibre sparkling wines with these grapes.  We’ll toast to that!

Once on the island you’ll realize just how many fabulous wineries are ready to be explored.  Below we outline the top wineries of Vancouver Island.

1: Averill Creek Vineyard:

Located in the Cowichan Valley, Averill Creek Vineyard is one of the island’s most renowned wineries. They produce exceptional Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, and Maréchal Foch wines , to name a few. The vineyard’s picturesque location, set against the backdrop of the Vancouver Island mountains, makes it a must-see destination.  Averill Creek Vineyard has earned a well-deserved reputation for producing high-quality wines that capture the essence of the island’s terroir.

Kelowna Wine & Craft Beer Tours 6

A visit to Averill Creek Vineyard offers a delightful and educational experience for novices and experts alike.  The vineyard’s picturesque location makes it a perfect spot for wine tasting and taking in the natural beauty of the Cowichan Valley.

To be considered on our list of top wineries of Vancouver Island, it’s about more than just the wine. Averill Creek delivers with its sleek, modern concrete exterior.  While the edgy exterior is matched by a sleek tasting room, the delight is in discovering their outdoor picnic facilities, which feel much like your own secret garden.  What better setting to sip and savour their wines alongside a masterfully prepared charcuterie platter, overflowing with local goods. All this to say, Averill Creek is one you won’t want to miss!

2: Blue Grouse Estate Winery:

As with Averill Creek, you will be speechless as you enter the second winery on our list of top wineries of Vancouver Island, Blue Grouse Estate Winery. A little slice of paradise all its own, known for its sustainable farming practices, Blue Grouse Estate Winery has left no stone unturned in their efforts to leave the world a better place.  Which is why one of the first natural beauties you’ll discover is the pond just next to their front entrance, teeming with wildlife.  And here’s a fun fact — Blue Grouse is home to 30 beehives that help pollinate their plants!

Kelowna Wine & Craft Beer Tours 8

The biodiversity surrounding Blue Grouse Estate is beneficial not only for the vineyards but for the community at large.  When it comes to their wines, Blue Grouse Estate Winery will surely impress with their portfolio, including Pinot Noir, Ortega, and Bacchus to name a few.

Offering stunning views of the surrounding vineyards, there is perhaps no more luxurious way to spend an afternoon than in one of their cabanas, enjoying a guided tasting by an expert tasting associate while taking in the vineyard views and gentle breeze.

While you’re there, you may as well indulge in a heaping board of meats, cheeses, nuts, local crackers and jams.  If you find yourself there on an especially hot day, treat yourself to one of their slushies — adults only! Always a fan favourite, Blue Grouse Estate Winery is routinely listed as one of the top wineries of Vancouver Island.

3: Unsworth Vineyards:

Situated in the Cowichan Valley, Unsworth Vineyards focuses on producing high-quality wines with a French flair and is truly a hidden gem among British Columbia’s wine producers. Their picturesque estate combines winemaking excellence with a deep appreciation for culinary arts, offering a unique and immersive experience for visitors. Celebrated for its French-inspired wines, their portfolio includes sparkling wines, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir.

The winery’s serene ambiance adds to the overall experience, making it a place you’ll want to unwind for the entire afternoon.  A visit to Unsworth Vineyards is an experience that combines wine, food, and the natural beauty of Vancouver Island. The welcoming tasting room provides the perfect setting to sample their wines.

Kelowna Wine & Craft Beer Tours 10

Unsworth Vineyards is also celebrated for its on-site restaurant, aptly named The Restaurant at Unsworth Vineyards, which features a farm-to-table approach.   Focused on locally-sourced, seasonal ingredients, it should come as no surprise that their culinary offerings beautifully complement their wines.

During the warmer months when the patio is open, you’ll want to stop by and enjoy a pizza from their authentic outdoor forno oven. The estate offers scenic views of the vineyard and surrounding landscape, making it the ideal spot to enjoy wine and food, and perhaps even a leisurely stroll through the vineyards.

4: Rocky Creek Winery:

Big on charm, number four on our list of top wineries of Vancouver Island is Rocky Creek! The true definition of a family-owned and operated vineyard, Rocky Creek Winery welcomes you with hospitality that is unparalleled.  This intimate spot is perfect for those seeking an off-the-beaten-path experience.

Mark and Linda Holford pursued a dream and 15 years later, feel right at home as winery owners.  Their award-winning Pinot Gris is only one of the many reason sto visit!  A knowledgeable staff member will engage you with a history of the winery, interesting facts about the wine, and an enthusiasm that is contagious.

Kelowna Wine & Craft Beer Tours 12

On a beautiful day, you’d be remiss not to enjoy their intimate outdoor area.  As it is a licensed picnic area, guests are encouraged to bring their own picnics to enjoy with a bottle of Rocky Creek wine.  Furry friends are welcome!

5: Enrico Winery:

Situated on a picturesque 50-acre estate, Enrico Winery grows 8 different varietals of grapes, a testament to the amazing micro-climate they are fortunate enough to enjoy.  The grapes grown on site range from fruity whites to full-bodied reds, and include white grapes like Ortega, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay, and red grapes like Pinot Noir, Cabernet Libre, and Cabernet Foch (a cross between Cabernet Sauvignon and Marechal Foch).

Kelowna Wine & Craft Beer Tours 14

Offering one of the most diverse portfolios in the province, Enrico Winery continues to gain traction with the wine loving public and holds the number five spot on our list of top wineries of Vancouver Island.

With award-winning wines, including the first prestigious Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Excellence in BC Wines to be awarded on Vancouver Island, a tasting at Enrico Winery is an absolute must.

The cherry on top of it all is their expansive patio, perfect for enjoying your favourite bottle of wine with friends while taking in the breathtaking views.  Undoubtedly, your trip to Vancouver Island wouldn’t be complete without a stop to Enrico Winery!

6: Zanatta Winery:

The smallest winery listed on our top wineries of Vancouver Island, Zanatta Winery is a unique spot, standing out for the use of classical and traditional methods.  Established in the 1980s by the Zanatta family, this winery has carved a niche for itself by producing exceptional wines and for being the first on Vancouver Island to produce Champagne-style wines.

Kelowna Wine & Craft Beer Tours 16

Rooted in the Zanatta family’s Italian heritage and their desire to bring a touch of Italy to the fertile landscapes of Vancouver Island, the first vines were planted in the late 1980s.  Their portfolio of wines today include Moscato, Pinot Grigio, Ortega, and Auxerrois, as well as Carmine and Pinot Noir to name a few.

Their Tradizionale Brut , made in the classic method, employ estate-grown, hand-harvested Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, with rich toasty notes and delicate bubbles.  We’ll toast to that!

7: Church & State Winery:

Well known in the Okanagan Valley wine region, their sister property is a staple of the top wineries of Vancouver Island. Located only 15 minutes from downtown Victoria on the picturesque Saanich Peninsula, this winery has gained a well-deserved reputation for producing high-quality wines in a breathtaking setting.

Kelowna Wine & Craft Beer Tours 18

Offering a diverse and impressive wine portfolio, you can expect to be wowed with varietals like Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah, and a red blend they playfully call their Lost Inhibitions Red.

What’s more, here you get to enjoy the best of both worlds, as wines from both their Vancouver Island and Okanagan Estate Vineyards are poured!  A visit to Church and State Wines in Victoria provides a memorable wine-tasting experience in a stunning setting.

Visiting the top wineries of Vancouver Island is a unique experience. With an abundance of vineyards to explore, submerse yourself in a tasting and learn about the wines poured, or enjoy a guided tour for insights into the vineyards and the island’s winemaking history. These tours are a fantastic way to immerse yourself in the island’s wine culture while enjoying the stunning landscapes.

Kelowna Wine & Craft Beer Tours 20

Vancouver Island’s culinary scene complements its wine culture. Many of the properties listed as the top wineries of Vancouver island have onsite restaurants or partner with local chefs to offer delicious food pairings with their wines. This farm-to-table approach ensures that the culinary experience is as exceptional as the wines themselves. The local seafood, artisan cheeses, and fresh produce all contribute to a rich and diverse gastronomic adventure.

The wineries of Vancouver Island are more than just places to taste exceptional wines. They are gateways to the island’s unique natural beauty and vibrant culture. wine tours on vancouver island

Winemaking began on Vancouver Island as early as the 1920s, with fruit wine made from local berries—a traditional that endures today, with not only fruit wine but honey wine (mead) and still and sparkling wine from grapes made here. It was a provincial government research project in the 1980s, tasked with identifying grape varietals that could thrive in the maritime climate (such as many hardy hybrid grapes), that really fuelled the modern wine industry. Today the Island boasts around 30 wineries, from the Comox Valley on the northeast coast down to Sooke, near the southern tip.

Vancouver Island Travel Guide

Last Updated: August 30, 2023

a view of the lush nature and forests of Vancouver Island, Canada

Located just off the coast of British Columbia, Vancouver Island is a gorgeous getaway location that’s become immensely popular in recent years.

Home to just under 1 million people and spanning a whopping 456 kilometers (283 miles), this former retirement hotspot is one of the biggest islands in Canada . In recent years, it’s developed a much younger edge thanks to a university, burgeoning arts scene, and the younger crowd of people fleeing Vancouver’s astronomical housing prices. It also has the mildest climate in all of Canada, which certainly adds to its appeal.

You’ll find a flourishing natural food and beer scene here in addition to the island’s beautiful beaches, hiking trails, lakes, rivers, mountains, and scenic farmland. It’s a picturesque island, especially in the fall and spring when the temperature is perfect and there are fewer crowds. If you’re an outdoorsy kind of person, Vancouver Island is not to be missed!

This Vancouver Island travel guide can help you plan your trip, save money, and make the most of your visit.

Top 5 Things to See and Do on Vancouver Island

A whale's tail breaking the water in beautiful Vancouver Island, Canada

1. Visit Cathedral Grove

This forest on the southwest part of the island, officially known as MacMillan Provincial Park, has some of the oldest cedar trees in the world (many are over 1,000 years old). The canopy is 80 meters high (262 feet) in some places, making it a great place to hike, go birdwatching, and just get away from it all. While this gorgeous area is hardly ‘undiscovered,’ this pristine protected natural park offers a glimpse of Canada’s unique temperate rainforests with lush ferns, moss, and towering ancient trees. Admission is free. Just be mindful to stay on designated paths and ‘leave no trace’ as you enjoy the area.

2. Go whale watching

Vancouver Island is one of the most active areas for whales in the world, including orcas and humpbacks. There are three pods of about 80 killer whales that live around the island’s southern tip, so you have a high chance of seeing a whale on your trip but the best time to see them is from May to October. Check the weather before you go and make sure to wear comfortable layers and bring sunscreen. Tickets cost around 90-150 CAD for a 3-hour tour.

3. Visit Butchart Gardens

This nearly 120-year-old garden is host to a spectacular flower exhibit with 900 plant varieties and colorful flowers. The Butchart Gardens were started in 1904 when Jennie Butchart set out to create a lush garden on the empty space left by a cleared limestone quarry. Today, the Gardens are still family owned and a National Historic Site of Canada. There are many peaceful walking paths and areas to just sit and enjoy nature, and the Japanese maples turn brilliant shades of reds and oranges in the fall. Admission ranges from 21-38 CAD. Note that prices are higher around December when there is a special Christmas exhibition with twinkling light shows and carols.

4. Hike the rainforest

If you don’t do some hiking while you’re here, you’re missing out on the best of the island. East Sooke Regional Park boasts 50 kilometers (31 miles) of rainforest hiking trails with sheltered coves and a rocky 10-kilometer (6-mile) coastal hike that’s challenging but promises spectacular views. If you want something more leisurely, check out Aylard Farm if picnicking is your main priority. You can get to the park by bus but just note the bus only runs during the week so check schedules before going. Admission is free.

5. Hang out in Victoria

Victoria is the capital of British Columbia and being here is like stepping into a British city where double-decker buses navigate the streets, the houses look like Victorian mansions, and cricket is all the rage. Victoria has a much more laid back vibe than Vancouver too. There are activities for any taste, from bike tours, nature and parks, street art, and craft beer. A free walking tour is a great place to start. Toonie Tours run a 2.5-hour free Victoria Walking Tour on weekends at 10am. Just be sure to tip your guide!

Other Things to See and Do on Vancouver Island

1. see the “goats on the roof”.

For a fun experience, visit the Old Country Market in Coombs which has actual goats living on the roof. Don’t feel too bad for them as the roof has plenty of grass and room for them to roam around! While you’re there, grab a handmade donut or some tacos from the market. There are also several gift shops, produce stalls, a deli, and restaurants located in and around the market. Bring an appetite!

2. Relax in Beacon Hill Park

This scenic park in Victoria covers over 200 acres and is a tranquil place to relax and take a stroll. There are tennis courts, a golf green, lawn bowling, flower beds, a petting zoo, and a hawthorn tree planted by Winston Churchill in 1929. Bring a book and lounge the day away.

3. Visit a winery

Vancouver Island has over 20 different wineries, most of which are located in the Cowichan Valley. I highly recommend going on a wine tour. Not only is the wine delicious, but the scenic valley surrounded by rolling green mountains provides a stunning backdrop to your visit. A full-day tour including lunch starts around 125 CAD, or you can rent a car and drive around yourself (but don’t drink and drive — find a sober friend to tag along with).

4. Visit the U’Mista Cultural Center

This center protects the heritage of First Nations peoples and offers visitors a look at indigenous life on the island. You’ll learn about the potlatch ceremonies (a huge shared feast where gifts are exchanged and wealth is redistributed) of the Kwakwaka’wakw people in Alert Bay who have been living on this island for thousands of years, and discover the unique history and challenges of the region’s indigenous peoples. Tickets are 15 CAD.

5. Take a ghost tour

Europeans arrived in the region in the late 1700s so it should come as no surprise that Victoria has a long (and spooky) past. Discover the Past offers one of the best tours for combining interesting city history with tales of gruesome crimes and ghostly encounters. The guides are knowledgeable and always have entertaining stories to share. Tickets start at 21 CAD for a one-hour tour. At Christmas, they have a special Ghosts of Christmas Past tour with haunted stories. Schedules are seasonal so check their website to book tickets online.

6. Admire Abkhazi Garden

Spanning just over an acre, this garden in Victoria was created by a former Russian prince and his wife in 1946. Today, the garden features Japanese Maples, native Garry oaks, and hundreds of rhododendrons. There is also a tranquil tea house offering a traditional tea service from 11am-5pm. The suggested donation is 10 CAD.

7. Day-trip to the smaller islands

Vancouver Island is the only island that brings in tons of tourists here, but the Gulf Islands archipelago consists of hundreds of smaller islands and inlets in the Georgia Strait, many of which make for a pleasant day trip. Consider renting a boat or arranging a tour to Gabriola, Saltspring, or Thetis, three of the most popular islands (or take the ferry and save money). You can hike, explore the bays and beaches, or visit local artisans and eateries there. Ferry rates start at 10 CAD.

8. See the Victoria Butterfly Gardens

This indoor tropical rainforest in Victoria is filled with thousands of butterflies (there are over 70 species here). The gardens also have koi, turtles, poison dart frogs, parrots, flamingos, and tropical flowers. It’s a fun place to visit if you’re traveling with kids. Admission is 18 CAD.

9. Chill out in Tofino

Tofino is a fishing village on the Esowista Peninsula that has become a major surfing hub. Hang out at Wickaninnish Beach, take a surfing lesson in Cox Bay, soak in the hot springs at Hot Springs Cove, or enjoy Tofino’s cafe and restaurant scene. It’s the “hip” part of the island. Surfboard rentals start at 35 CAD for a day while 2.5-hour group lessons cost around 90 CAD.

10. Explore Pacific Rim National Park Reserve

This national park is full of beaches, misty forests, and dramatic coastlines. Some of the island’s most popular beaches are here, including Long Beach, Combers Beach, and Wickaninnish Beach. The park is also home to the West Coast Trail Unit, a network of hiking trails covering 193 square kilometers (75 square miles), including the 75-kilometer (47-mile) trek between Bamfield and Port Renfrew (reservations required). Hit the Nuu-chah-nulth Trail, rent a kayak to paddle around Broken Group Islands, or storm watch at Kwisitis Visitor Centre (it’s a pastime here!).

Vancouver Island Travel Costs

A stunning forest landscape near a lake in beautiful Vancouver Island, Canada

Hostel prices – A bed in a 4-8-bed dorm costs around 35-45 CAD per night. Private rooms cost 65-85 CAD per night. Expect basic amenities like free Wi-Fi and self-catering facilities.

For those traveling with a tent, camping is available starting at 18 CAD per night. This gets you a basic tent plot without electricity for two people.

Budget hotel prices – A room in a budget hotel starts at about 110 CAD. This includes basic amenities like AC, TV, a coffee/tea maker, and free Wi-Fi.

Airbnb is available everywhere on Vancouver Island. Private rooms start at 75 CAD per night but average double that. An entire home/apartment starts around 100 CAD per night, though most are 150-250 CAD.

Food – On Vancouver Island, which is fast becoming a foodie hub, seafood is king. Oysters, crabs, and fresh fish are all common staples. Sushi is super popular, owing to the region’s Asian influence, as are fish and chips. Also, be sure to sample more general Canadian staples like poutine (fries with gravy and cheese curds), beaver tails (fried dough with maple syrup), Canadian bacon, and the oddly tasty ketchup chips.

There are lots of places to grab food on the go on Vancouver Island. You can find sandwiches for about 10 CAD, or you can get soup and salad for lunch for less than 20 CAD.

A fast-food combo (think McDonald’s) costs about 12 CAD. Fish and chips or a burger with fries is around 20 CAD with a drink. A beer costs about 6 CAD. A meal at a higher-end restaurant (like lobster or fresh game) costs about 40 CAD for an entree and a drink.

Pizza costs around 15 CAD for a large while Chinese food is 11-15 CAD for a main dish. For cheap eats, check out Warehouse Group restaurants that have items like tacos, burgers, salads, and sandwiches for 10 CAD or less in a bar-like atmosphere.

If you cook your own food, a week’s worth of groceries costs around 65 CAD. This gets you basic staples like rice, pasta, vegetables, and some meat or seafood.

Backpacking Vancouver Island Suggested Budgets

If you’re backpacking Vancouver Island, expect to spend about 70 CAD per day. This assumes you’re staying in a hostel, cooking all your meals, limiting your drinking, taking public transportation to get around, and sticking to mostly free activities like swimming and hiking. If you plan on drinking, add another 10-15 CAD to your daily budget.

On a mid-range budget of 195 CAD per day, you can stay in a private Airbnb, cook most of your meals, enjoy a couple of drinks, take the occasional taxi to get around, and do some paid tours and activities like wine tours or whale watching.

On a “luxury” budget of 310 CAD per day or more, you can stay in a hotel, eat out for all your meals, drink more, rent a car, and do whatever paid tours and activities you want. This is just the ground floor for luxury though. The sky is the limit!

You can use the chart below to get some idea of how much you need to budget daily, depending on your travel style. Keep in mind these are daily averages — some days you’ll spend more, some days you’ll spend less (you might spend less every day). We just want to give you a general idea of how to make your budget. Prices are in CAD.

Vancouver Island Travel Guide: Money-Saving Tips

With a little effort, you can turn Vancouver Island into an affordable travel destination. Most of the outdoor activities are free so if you stick to those and cook your own food you can keep your costs low. Here are some ways to save money when you visit Vancouver Island:

  • Stay with a local – If you plan ahead, you can usually find a Couchsurfing host on Vancouver Island. This way, you not only have a free place to stay but you’ll get to connect with a local who can share their insider tips and advice.
  • Camp – If you want to camp, use the DiscoverCamping.ca website to find available campsites on Vancouver Island. A two-person site starts about 20-25 CAD.
  • Check for deals – HelloBC.com (the official tourism website) often lists seasonal travel deals and discounts in its “Plan Your Trip” section. Check it out for money-saving tips and deals.
  • Gas up on the mainland – If you’re coming from Vancouver by car, make sure you gas up before boarding the ferry. Gas prices are always higher on the island, as are most grocery prices. Stock up on everything before you arrive!
  • Look for the happy hours – The Ultimate Happy Hours website lists all the happy hour drink and food specials around Victoria. They update with new info frequently.
  • Take the ferry as a walk-on passenger – Ferry prices for vehicles aren’t cheap. If you’re just making a short trip and staying in one destination on the island (like Victoria or Nanaimo), consider ditching the vehicle and traveling as a walk-on passenger.
  • Explore the island by bike – British Columbia was made for mountain biking, and Vancouver Island is no exception. There are tons of bike paths, both inside the cities and in the provincial parks. Pack a picnic lunch, bring lots of water, and make a day of it.
  • Hitchhike – Since the island sees a huge boost in population during the summer, you can try your hand at hitchhiking between cities if you’re on a budget. It isn’t super common, but it can save you the cost of renting a car or taking the bus. Just don’t get off the beaten trail as you may end up waiting some time for a ride!
  • Bring a water bottle – The tap water here is safe to drink so bring a reusable water bottle to save money. LifeStraw makes a reusable bottle with a built-in filter to ensure your water is always safe and clean.

Where to Stay on Vancouver Island

Vancouver Island has a few hostels that make budget-friendly travel here possible. Here are my suggested places to stay:

  • HI Nanaimo Painted Turtle Guesthouse (Nanaimo)
  • Riding Fool Hostel (Cumberland)
  • Earth Club Factory (Denman Island)

How to Get Around Vancouver Island

A historic building along the shore of Victoria on Vancouver Island, Canada

Public transportation – Victoria is the only major urban center on the island. Downtown is very walkable and the bus can get you everywhere else on the island you need to go. Fares cost 2.50 CAD, or you can get a 10-ride pass for 22.50 CAD. A one-day pass is 5 CAD and is only available on the bus.

Bike rental – You can rent a bicycle in Victoria for about 40 CAD per day from Cycle BC. An e-bike costs 75 CAD per day.

Ferry – You can use BC Ferries to get to several places around the island. The route between Swartz Bay (Victoria) and Fulford Harbour is 11.60 CAD for a return ticket, while Swartz Bay to the Gulf Islands is 11.90 CAD. Nanaimo to Gabriola Island is 10.15 CAD for a return ticket.

Bus – The bus goes just about everywhere on Vancouver Island, although it isn’t cheap. A seven-hour journey from Victoria to Tofino is 105 CAD, while a one-hour trip from Victoria to Cowichan Bay is 20 CAD. A 3.5-hour trip from Nanaimo to Ucluelet is 50 CAD.

Taxi – Taxis are not cheap here. Their base rate is 3.67 CAD, and it’s an additional 2 CAD per kilometer afterward. Skip the taxis if you can as they add up fast and will destroy your budget!

Car Rental – Car rentals can be found for as little as 35 CAD per day. If you’d like to take advantage of all the outdoor attractions that Vancouver Island has to offer, it’s a great option, especially considering how expensive buses are. For the best car rental prices, use Discover Cars .

When to Go to Vancouver Island

Vancouver Island is busiest during the summer since its biggest draw is the great outdoors. Temperatures are usually in the mid-20s°C (high 60s°F) with little rainfall, making this time of year the best for hiking, cycling, whale watching, and other outdoor activities. Prepare for more expensive accommodations and bigger tourist crowds during this time (whale-watching season starts in August and ends in December).

Fall and spring are both excellent times to visit for sunny weather, as temperatures hover around 10-16°C (50-60°F). That means it’s still warm enough to hike and enjoy the outdoors. In the spring, the cherry blossoms start blooming, and the island comes alive. There are fewer tourists during the spring and fall as well.

Winter (December-March) is surprisingly mild here, with average daily highs just under 10°C (low 40s°F). It can be rainy during these months, so bring waterproof clothing. Room rates are cheaper in the winter as well. While this isn’t the best time to visit, if you have to spend winter in Canada, this is as warm as it gets!

How to Stay Safe on Vancouver Island

Vancouver Island is very safe. You’re unlikely to experience any crime here. Even petty crime like pickpocketing and theft is rare. That said, always keep your valuables secure and out of reach just to be safe.

Always check the weather before you go out hiking or swimming and make sure you avoid getting up close and personal with any wildlife (there are over 7,000 bears on the island, for example).

Solo female travelers should generally feel safe here. However, the standard precautions you take anywhere apply (never leave your drink unattended at the bar, never walk home alone intoxicated, etc.). For more information, check out one of the many solo female travel blogs in the city.

Scams here are virtually non-existent here, but if you want to play it extra safe, you can read about common travel scams to avoid right with this article.

If you experience an emergency, dial 911 for assistance.

When in doubt, always trust your instincts. If a taxi driver seems shady, get out. If your hotel or accommodation is seedier than you thought, go somewhere else. Make copies of your personal documents, including your passport and ID, in case of an emergency.

The most important piece of advice I can offer is to purchase good travel insurance. Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past.

Vancouver Island Travel Guide: The Best Booking Resources

These are my favorite companies to use when I travel. They consistently have the best deals, offer world-class customer service and great value, and overall, are better than their competitors. They are the companies I use the most and are always the starting point in my search for travel deals.

  • Hostelworld – This is the best hostel accommodation site out there with the largest inventory, best search interface, and widest availability.
  • Booking.com – The best all around booking site that constantly provides the cheapest and lowest rates. They have the widest selection of budget accommodation. In all my tests, they’ve always had the cheapest rates out of all the booking websites.
  • Get Your Guide – Get Your Guide is a huge online marketplace for tours and excursions. They have tons of tour options available in cities all around the world, including everything from cooking classes, walking tours, street art lessons, and more!
  • SafetyWing – Safety Wing offers convenient and affordable plans tailored to digital nomads and long-term travelers. They have cheap monthly plans, great customer service, and an easy-to-use claims process that makes it perfect for those on the road.

Why you should visit Victoria, Vancouver's little sister with a big history

British Columbia’s capital has grand architecture, First Nations art and Canada’s oldest Chinatown, all fringed by easily accessible wilderness.

A picture of the central area of Victoria, the capital of British Columbia. The architecture is traditional, and in the foreground sailboats dock in calm waters.

On the southern tip of Vancouver Island, sailboats bob in Victoria’s harbour and chateau-style buildings stand beside leafy parks. The gentle pace of life in British Columbia’s compact capital is part of its appeal, yet it’s far from a provincial backwater. An easy journey from Vancouver, the city has excellent neighbourhood restaurants, breweries and coffee shops, while its museums and galleries showcase the region’s Indigenous heritage. It’s also surrounded by wild landscapes and makes a natural jumping-off point for whale-watching.

Presiding over the harbour, the British Columbia Parliament Buildings are the city’s centrepiece, an 1890s icon whose marbled interiors are open for free daytime tours. Across the street, the Fairmont Empress is one of Canada’s grandest hotels, with Elizabeth II and Rudyard Kipling among its storied guests. Afternoon tea in the opulent Lobby Lounge is one of Victoria’s quintessential experiences.

Through first-class exhibits, the Royal BC Museum delves deep into the province’s natural past (look out for the life-sized woolly mammoth), as well as its rich First Nations heritage. There are more than 225,000 artefacts in its collection, from masks belonging to the Haida people to traditional clothing from the Nlaka’pamux. Adjoining the museum is Thunderbird Park, named after the legendary bird and home to some of the museum’s most spectacular totem poles.

There’s much to discover in lively Downtown. Bibliophiles will love browsing the shelves at Munro’s Books , a shop housed in a former bank, with its coffered ceiling and spectacular painted textiles by local artist Carole Sabiston. The Mark Loria Gallery , meanwhile, specialises in contemporary Canadian Indigenous art.

Victoria’s Chinatown   is the oldest in Canada, home to retro neon signs and restaurants such as Don Mee , which has served dim sum for more than 80 years. Fan Tan Alley claims to be one of the world’s narrowest streets; squeeze along the lantern-festooned lane for a range of quirky boutiques, from Saltspring Soapworks , which sells natural body-care products, to Just Matcha , which stocks premium-grade tea. Close by is Habit Coffee , a laid-back cafe with local art on its exposed-brick walls and Victorian suppliers on its menu — stop by to pick up beans from Bows Coffee Roasters or teas from Earth’s Herbal, both based in the city.

There’s more BC produce on offer at Wind Cries Mary , a moodily lit Downtown spot where the province’s oysters, mussels and salmon prop up a menu of sharing plates and cocktails. On the harbourfront, Red Fish Blue Fish is the place to go for jerk fish poutine, a fiery take on the Canadian classic.

If brunch is on the cards, try John’s Place , a kitsch, old-school spot serving waffles, pancakes and ‘Bat Out Of Hell meatloaf and eggs’, or head for the bubblegum-pink Floyd’s Diner in James Bay, where asking for ‘The Mahoney’ will get you whatever takes the chef’s fancy. For a tipple, Downtown’s Citrus & Cane mixes killer cocktails with a tropical twist (try the ‘ooh dat’s spicy’, made with Sons of Vancouver chilli vodka), while Boomtown serves a raft of BC porters and pale ales in its beer garden.

But there’s no resisting the call of the wild, with the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail, Goldstream Provincial Park and The Butchart Gardens within easy reach of the city. Dallas Road is also worth a drive or cycle — start in Fisherman’s Wharf Park, near the harbour, and wind east for six miles past beaches, bays and Beacon Hill Park, home to the world’s tallest freestanding totem pole at 128ft, before calling at the Oak Bay Beach Hotel . It makes an elegant stop for a glass of wine from BC’s Okanagan Valley, with views across to the Chatham Islands. For whale-watching, try Eagle Wing Tours; between June and October is the best time to spot Victoria’s marine residents.

Three wildlife spotting adventures in Victoria

1. Juan de Fuca marine Trail Keep eyes peeled for black bears on this 29-mile route through dense forests, over river gorges and along secluded beaches. It takes three to five days to complete, and there are chances to refuel at rustic diners along the way.

2.   Goldstream Provincial Park A naturalist’s paradise, this park has quiet forest walking trails, plunging waterfalls and a challenging climb to the top of the 1,375ft-tall Mount Finlayson, with bald eagles screeching overhead. Autumn sees the spectacular salmon run, too.

3.   Eagle Wing Tours This family-run company offers whale-watching trips in the Salish Sea with a team of guides. Seeing a pod of orcas or a humpback is a true highlight of a trip to Victoria, but ospreys, sea otters and elephant seals can also be spotted among the craggy islets on these three- to four-hour trips.
