Avatar

What to Wear on a Winter Cruise

The weather can be unpredictable on a winter cruise, so it’s important to pack a variety of clothes that will keep you warm and comfortable in a range of conditions. Here’s a brief overview of what to pack for a winter cruise:

  • Layers: The best way to stay warm on a winter cruise is to wear layers. Start with a base layer of long underwear, then add a fleece or sweater, and finally a waterproof jacket.
  • Outerwear: A waterproof jacket is essential for keeping you dry in the rain or snow. A warm hat, scarf, and gloves will also help to keep you warm.
  • Comfortable shoes: You’ll be doing a lot of walking on a cruise, so make sure to pack comfortable shoes that you can wear all day.
  • Swimwear: Even if you’re not planning on swimming, it’s a good idea to pack a swimsuit in case you decide to take a dip in the hot tub or ocean.
  • Other essentials: Other essentials to pack for a winter cruise include a travel adapter, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a camera.

By following these tips, you’ll be prepared for any weather conditions on your winter cruise.

What to Wear on the Ship

When packing for a winter cruise, it’s important to be prepared for a variety of weather conditions. The weather can change quickly at sea, so it’s important to have layers that you can add or remove as needed.

The most important thing to consider when packing for a winter cruise is warmth. Even if you’re sailing to a warm destination, the weather at sea can be cold. You’ll want to pack plenty of warm layers, such as sweaters, jackets, and fleeces.

One of the best ways to stay warm on a winter cruise is to layer your clothing. This means wearing multiple layers of clothing that you can add or remove as needed. For example, you might start your day with a long-sleeved shirt, a sweater, and a jacket. If it gets warmer, you can remove the jacket or sweater. If it gets colder, you can add another layer.

The dress code on a cruise ship will vary depending on the cruise line and the itinerary. However, it’s generally a good idea to dress casually but stylishly. For men, this might mean khakis or jeans, a button-down shirt, and a sweater or jacket. For women, this might mean a skirt or dress, a blouse or sweater, and a cardigan or jacket.

By following these tips, you can pack for a winter cruise and stay warm and comfortable no matter what the weather brings.

What to Wear for Shore Excursions

When planning your shore excursions, it’s important to consider the climate of the destination you’re visiting. The climate can vary significantly from one destination to another, even if they’re located in the same general area.

The best way to determine what to wear for a shore excursion is to research the climate of the destination you’re visiting. You can find this information online or by contacting the cruise line.

The activities you plan on doing on your shore excursion will also affect what you should wear. For example, if you’re planning on going hiking, you’ll need to wear different clothes than if you’re planning on visiting a museum.

Transportation

The mode of transportation you’ll be using to get to and from your shore excursion will also affect what you should wear. If you’re taking a bus or a taxi, you’ll need to wear comfortable shoes. If you’re taking a boat, you’ll need to wear something that won’t get wet.

By considering the climate, activities, and transportation involved in your shore excursions, you can pack the right clothes and have a comfortable and enjoyable experience.

Here are some additional tips for packing for a winter cruise:

  • Pack comfortable shoes that you can walk in for long periods of time.
  • Pack a waterproof jacket or raincoat in case of rain.
  • Pack a hat and gloves in case of cold weather.
  • Pack a swimsuit in case you want to go swimming in the hot tub or pool.
  • Pack a small day bag or backpack to carry your essentials with you on your excursions.

By following these tips, you can pack for a winter cruise and have a comfortable and enjoyable experience.

Taking A Winter Cruise: What To Wear

Winter cruise packing involves comfort, warmth, and staying dry. The following tips will help you pack for your winter cruise so you can enjoy it to the fullest.

  • Winter cruises require layers to stay warm. Wearing layers of clothing allows you to adjust your temperature as needed. The perfect layering piece is a turtleneck, sweater, or flannel shirt.
  • Wearing wool scarves, hats (balaclava), gloves, and mittens is the best way to keep warm on a winter cruise. Maintaining a warm and dry foot temperature affects your body's core temperature. Merino wool and synthetic fiber socks that wick moisture are an excellent choice.
  • An important part of your winter wardrobe is your outerwear. Water-repellent coats allowing free movement are essential if you cruises to Arctic or Antarctica. Some excursion areas can be challenging to reach when wearing restrictive clothing. If you are taking a cruise, check if the cruise line provides outerwear for its guests.
  • Thermal underwear (tops and bottoms) is a must for winter cruises. Keep your legs warm by wearing thermal underwear under heavy pants. In the event of snow activities, you should bring insulated ski pants.
  • Boots - To keep feet dry and warm, waterproof boots are essential. Your boots should be able to withstand temperatures as low as -40C depending on the cruise you choose.
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, lip balm, and moisturizer are essential for protecting your eyes in cold climates and warmer temperatures. A frigid environment can also cause burns and dryness on the skin and lips.
  • These wonderfully warm and comfortable packets will keep you warm on the coldest days. You can keep your hands, feet, and body warm by using small packets (follow the manufacturer's instructions). Warmth can be generated instantly by slipping them into boots, mittens, or under layers of clothing.

Winter Cruise Clothing According to Day

Whenever we think of cruises, we think of beaches drenched in sunlight and nights filled with warmth and humidity. In winter, most cruise lines move their ships to locations sheltered from snow and ice, such as Florida and Southern California. It should be noted, however, that winter cruise weather can be unpredictable. Weather changes can be unexpected, whether cold, rainy, or sudden drops in temperature. When cruising during the winter, dressing in layers is essential.

Traveling during the Day

Most winter cruise destinations have mild daytime temperatures. It is generally preferred to wear jeans or heavy pants over shorts, instead of wearing one bulky item, layer thin shirts. The ideal clothing pieces are those made of high-tech fabrics such as Polartec and Gore-Tex, but any fabric will do. Rain gear or a waterproof jacket should be always carried.

Activities for Evenings

Cruisers' generally accepted dress code during dinner is "resort chic." This means khaki pants and sun dresses in warm weather, but these clothes may need to be more adequate during a winter cruise . Lightweight sweaters or heavy fabrics are appropriate for the weather. Comfortable layering ensures you can move from the warm indoors to the cooler outdoors.

Evenings of Formality

It is common for cruises to feature two formal nights throughout seven nights. Most cruisers wear sports jackets and ties instead of tuxedos and ball gowns. Prepare for cold weather on a formal night by packing a dressy coat and tights. The ship's website can provide more information about dressing to the hilt without packing a tux. Most cruise lines offer formal wear rentals for a reasonable fee.

In a swimsuit, most passengers spend warm-weather cruise days at sea. Swimming may not be possible during a winter cruise. Many ships serve hot chocolate and blankets on their open decks. Swimmers should pack a thick beach towel, as shipboard pool towels are often thin. Cold weather may cause interior spaces to overheat, so dress in layers if you plan on spending time indoors and outdoors.

Sailing Holidays

There is an abundance of decorations and special events on board cruise ships during holiday sailings. Dressing festively is a favorite pastime for many travelers, but unpredictable weather can make packing difficult. Choose two-holiday outfits - one for warm weather and another for cold weather. Mixing and matching items can reduce the amount of packing required.

Q. Should I carry a purse on a cruise?

Once you’re on board, you probably won’t need your wallet so it should ideally be stored safely in your rooms. Carrying a purse or handbag is completely your choice – if you feel like it complements your outfit or that you can safely carry it around, then do go for it. Many women also prefer carrying handbags on cruises to store items they might need like makeup, sunscreen, perfumes, etc.

Q. Do I have to attend the cruise gala night?

Attending the formal nights is not necessary so you can skip it if you want. But I would recommend that you attend it at least once to enjoy that experience. After all, you paid for the cruise, so why not make the most of your time there?

what-to-wear-on-a-caribbean-cruise-in-december

Introduction

Embarking on a Caribbean cruise in December is a dream come true for many travelers. The warm weather, crystal-clear waters, and vibrant culture create the perfect setting for a memorable vacation. But before setting sail, it’s important to consider what to wear during your time on board and in port. Dressing appropriately and stylishly will ensure you feel comfortable and confident throughout your trip.

As December is considered part of the winter season, you may assume that the Caribbean would be chilly and require heavy clothing. However, the reality is quite the opposite. The Caribbean enjoys consistently warm temperatures year-round, making it a tropical paradise even during the winter months. With average temperatures ranging from the high 70s to low 80s Fahrenheit (around 25-28 degrees Celsius), you can expect plenty of sunshine and opportunities to soak up the sun’s rays.

While the weather is warm, it’s essential to consider the humidity and occasional rain showers that are common in the Caribbean. Lightweight, breathable fabrics that provide good ventilation and dry quickly are your best bet for staying comfortable and cool. This doesn’t mean sacrificing style, though. You can still embrace fashion-forward choices while keeping practicality in mind.

In this guide, we’ll explore what to wear on a Caribbean cruise in December, covering daytime attire, beachwear, evening attire for formal nights, casual evening attire, appropriate footwear, accessorizing your outfits, and highlighting essential items to pack. By the end of this article, you’ll be fully prepared to dress like a fashion-savvy traveler while still enjoying the laid-back vibes of cruising the Caribbean.

Weather in the Caribbean in December

If you’re escaping winter in December by setting sail on a Caribbean cruise, you’re in for a treat. The Caribbean experiences warm and pleasant weather during this time, providing a welcome respite from colder climates. The temperatures typically range from the high 70s to low 80s Fahrenheit (around 25-28 degrees Celsius).

One of the advantages of cruising in the Caribbean is the consistent climate throughout the year. December falls within the region’s dry season, meaning there is a lower chance of precipitation compared to other times of the year. However, it’s worth noting that the Caribbean does experience occasional rain showers, so it’s wise to be prepared with a lightweight rain jacket or umbrella.

The humidity in the Caribbean remains relatively high even during the winter months. The combination of warmth and humidity can make it feel hotter than the actual temperature, so dressing in light, breathable fabrics is key. Opt for natural materials like cotton and linen to help keep you cool and comfortable.

While the daytime temperatures are pleasant, evenings in the Caribbean can be slightly cooler. It’s a good idea to bring a light sweater or wrap with you for the cooler evenings, especially if you plan on being out on deck to enjoy the ocean breeze.

Overall, the weather in the Caribbean in December is perfect for enjoying outdoor activities, exploring the ports of call, and relaxing on the ship’s deck. Just remember to pack clothing that is appropriate for warm and occasionally humid conditions, as well as a light layer for the cooler evenings.

Appropriate Attire for Daytime Activities

During your Caribbean cruise, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to partake in daytime activities both on the ship and at the various ports of call. Whether you’re exploring the beautiful beaches, participating in water sports, or taking excursions to discover the local culture, it’s important to dress appropriately for comfort and practicality.

When it comes to daytime attire, opt for lightweight and breathable clothing that allows you to move freely and stay cool under the sun. Here are some suggestions for the perfect daytime cruise outfits:

  • Shorts and T-shirts: Pack a variety of comfortable shorts and T-shirts in breathable fabrics like cotton or linen. These will keep you cool and allow for maximum mobility. Choose colors and patterns that reflect the vibrant and tropical surroundings.
  • Sundresses: For a feminine and stylish option, pack a few sundresses in lightweight fabrics. These are perfect for exploring the ports of call or enjoying a casual lunch on the ship. Opt for fun prints or colorful solids to enhance the tropical vibe.
  • Maxi dresses and skirts: Maxi dresses and skirts are another great option for daytime activities. They provide coverage while still allowing for air circulation. Look for flowy designs in breathable materials.
  • Swim cover-ups: Don’t forget to bring stylish swim cover-ups to throw on over your swimsuit when you’re not in the water. This will give you the flexibility to go from the pool or beach to other activities without needing to change your entire outfit.

Remember to pack a few hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun’s rays. Additionally, it’s a good idea to have a lightweight and compact beach towel that you can bring with you on excursions or to the pool deck on the ship.

By choosing comfortable, breathable, and stylish attire for your daytime activities, you’ll be able to fully enjoy everything that the Caribbean has to offer during your cruise.

Beachwear and Swimwear

One of the highlights of a Caribbean cruise is undoubtedly the stunning beaches and crystal-clear waters. To make the most of your time in paradise, it’s essential to pack the right beachwear and swimwear. Here are some tips to help you look stylish and feel comfortable while enjoying the sun and sea:

  • Swimsuits: Make sure to pack a variety of swimsuits to suit your style and preference. Whether you prefer bikinis, tankinis, or one-piece swimsuits, choose designs that flatter your body type and make you feel confident.
  • Cover-ups: Beach cover-ups are a versatile addition to your cruise wardrobe. They provide an extra layer of sun protection and allow you to transition easily from the beach to other activities. Options range from light and flowy kaftans to stylish sarongs or even casual sundresses that can double as cover-ups.
  • Beach shorts and sarongs: If you plan on taking beach walks or exploring the local shops, having a pair of lightweight beach shorts or a sarong to tie around your waist is a great idea. It provides a modest and comfortable option for covering up while still enjoying the beachy atmosphere.
  • Beach hats and sunglasses: Protecting yourself from the sun is crucial, so don’t forget to pack a wide-brimmed sun hat and a pair of sunglasses. Opt for stylish designs that complement your beachwear and offer sufficient shade.
  • Beach bags: A stylish beach bag is a must-have accessory. Choose a roomy and durable bag that can hold your towels, sunscreen, water bottle, and other beach essentials. Look for designs made of waterproof materials to keep your belongings safe.

When it comes to beachwear, embrace vibrant colors, tropical prints, and lightweight fabrics that dry quickly. Whether you’re lounging on the beach, snorkeling, or participating in water activities, having the right beachwear will ensure you look and feel your best throughout your Caribbean cruise.

Evening Attire for Formal Nights

On most cruises, there are typically one or two formal nights where guests have the opportunity to dress up for special events and dinners. While not all cruises have strict dress codes, it’s a great chance to showcase your elegant style and immerse yourself in the glamorous atmosphere. Here are some tips for choosing the perfect evening attire for formal nights:

  • Men: For formal nights, men typically wear tuxedos or dark-colored suits with a dress shirt and tie. If you don’t want to go for a full tuxedo, a well-tailored suit is still a stylish option. Complete the look with dress shoes and accessories like a pocket square or cufflinks.
  • Women: Women have a range of options for formal nights. A classic choice is an elegant evening gown or cocktail dress. Opt for a style that flatters your figure and makes you feel confident. Don’t forget to accessorize with statement jewelry and a stylish clutch.

While formal nights offer a chance to dress up, it’s important to note that not all cruises have strict dress codes. Some ships offer more relaxed options like “smart casual” or “resort chic” for evening wear. In these cases, men can wear dress pants or chinos paired with a collared shirt or a dress shirt without a tie. Women can opt for dressy separates such as a skirt or pants paired with a stylish blouse or a sundress.

Before your cruise, it’s a good idea to check with the cruise line or consult the dress code guidelines provided. This will help you plan and pack accordingly to ensure you have appropriate attire for formal nights. Remember that formal nights are an opportunity to have some fun with your fashion choices and embrace a more glamorous side.

Casual Evening Attire

While formal nights offer a chance to dress up, the majority of evenings on a Caribbean cruise are typically more relaxed and casual. This gives you the opportunity to showcase your personal style in comfortable and stylish attire. Here are some ideas for creating a fashionable yet casual evening look:

  • Men: For casual evenings, men can opt for dress pants or chinos paired with a button-down shirt or a polo shirt. You can also layer with a lightweight sweater or a casual blazer for added style. Complete the look with comfortable loafers or boat shoes.
  • Women: Women have numerous options for casual evening attire. You can choose from elegant yet relaxed options like maxi dresses, jumpsuits, or stylish separates such as a blouse paired with cropped pants or a skirt. Add a touch of flair with accessories like statement jewelry or a trendy belt.

When selecting your casual evening attire, consider the climate and the activities you’ll be participating in. The Caribbean evenings can still be warm, so opt for breathable fabrics like cotton or linen. Additionally, keep in mind that some cruise ships have specific dress codes for certain areas or restaurants, so be sure to check if there are any restrictions or guidelines to follow.

Casual evenings offer the perfect opportunity to express your personal style while maintaining comfort. Embrace vibrant colors, playful prints, and trendy designs that reflect the laid-back Caribbean ambiance. Whether you’re enjoying a casual dinner on the ship or exploring the onboard entertainment, feeling relaxed and fashionable in your evening attire will enhance your overall cruise experience.

Footwear for a Caribbean Cruise

Choosing the right footwear for your Caribbean cruise is essential. You’ll be spending a significant amount of time exploring the ship’s various amenities, as well as walking on sandy beaches and exploring the ports of call. Here are some tips on what footwear to pack for a Caribbean cruise:

  • Sandals: Sandals are a must-have for a Caribbean cruise. Opt for comfortable and supportive pairs that are suitable for walking and provide good traction. Look for designs made of waterproof materials or those that dry quickly in case you get them wet.
  • Flip-flops: Flip-flops are perfect for lounging on the pool deck or walking on the sandy beaches. Choose durable and comfortable flip-flops with a non-slip sole. They are also handy when going to the spa or using the ship’s sauna or steam rooms.
  • Walking shoes: Since you’ll be doing a fair amount of walking, it’s a good idea to bring a pair of comfortable walking shoes. Opt for lightweight sneakers or trainers with good arch support and cushioning to ensure maximum comfort during excursions or exploring the ports of call.
  • Water shoes: If you plan on participating in water activities like snorkeling or kayaking, consider packing water shoes. These protective shoes are designed to provide grip and prevent slipping on rocky or uneven surfaces, making them ideal for water adventures.
  • Dress shoes: For formal nights or occasions that require a more elevated dress code, bring a pair of dress shoes. Men can opt for dress loafers or oxfords, while women can choose stylish heels or dressy flats.

Having a good variety of footwear will ensure you’re prepared for any activity or occasion during your Caribbean cruise. It’s always a good idea to break in new shoes before your trip to avoid any discomfort or blisters.

Remember, while comfort is the priority for footwear on a cruise, you can still find stylish options that complement your outfits. Invest in versatile and comfortable shoes that will allow you to explore everything the Caribbean has to offer with ease and style.

Accessorizing Your Outfits

Accessories are the perfect finishing touch to elevate your Caribbean cruise outfits. They can add personality, style, and that extra pop of flair to your look. Here are some tips on how to accessorize your outfits for a fashionable and memorable cruise:

  • Jewelry: Choose jewelry pieces that complement your outfits and reflect your personal style. Statement necklaces, stackable bracelets, and dangly earrings can instantly transform a simple outfit into a stylish one. Opt for lightweight and colorful pieces that won’t weigh you down.
  • Hats: Hats serve a dual purpose during a Caribbean cruise: they add a fashionable touch to your outfit while protecting you from the sun’s rays. Whether you prefer a wide-brimmed sun hat, a trendy fedora, or a cute straw hat, it’s a practical and stylish accessory to pack.
  • Belts: Belts are not only functional but also a fashionable accessory to consider. They can cinch in a loose dress or add a sleek element to a pair of shorts or pants. Choose belts in different colors and styles to mix and match with your outfits.
  • Scarves: Lightweight scarves can be incredibly versatile, serving as a fashion statement or a cover-up. Tie a colorful scarf around your neck, use it as a shawl on cooler evenings, or wear it as a headband to keep your hair out of your face at the beach.
  • Bags: A stylish bag is not just for carrying your essentials but also adds a fashionable touch to your overall ensemble. Opt for a crossbody bag or a tote that can hold your belongings while you explore the ports of call or a clutch for formal evenings on the ship.

Remember to strike a balance with your accessories. Avoid overloading your look with too many pieces that might overwhelm your outfit. Instead, choose a few key accessories that complement your attire and add a touch of individuality.

Lastly, don’t forget about self-expression through your choice of accessories. Embrace colorful and tropical-inspired pieces that capture the essence of the Caribbean. Having fun with your accessories allows your personality to shine through and adds a playful element to your cruise fashion.

Essential Items to Pack

When packing for your Caribbean cruise, it’s important to include essential items that will ensure you have a comfortable and enjoyable experience. From practical necessities to convenience items, here is a list of things you shouldn’t forget to pack:

  • Sunscreen: The sun in the Caribbean can be intense, so pack a high SPF sunscreen to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen and don’t forget to reapply throughout the day.
  • Insect repellent: Although not all Caribbean destinations have a significant mosquito presence, it’s wise to pack insect repellent, especially if you’re visiting locations known for insects. Opt for a DEET-based repellent for maximum effectiveness.
  • Medications and first aid kit: Bring any necessary medications you use regularly and consider packing a small first aid kit with essentials like band-aids, pain relievers, and motion sickness remedies.
  • Swimwear and cover-ups: Don’t forget to pack an ample supply of swimwear, including swimsuits, cover-ups, and beach towels. This way, you’ll always have a clean and dry option available.
  • Comfortable walking shoes: You’ll be doing a fair amount of walking, so pack comfortable walking shoes. Make sure they are broken in and provide good support for long days of exploring.
  • Light layers: While the Caribbean is known for its warm weather, it’s a good idea to pack light layers for cooler evenings or air-conditioned areas on the ship. Bring a cardigan, wrap, or sweater that can easily be added or removed as needed.
  • Electronics: Don’t forget to pack essentials like your phone, camera, and chargers. You might also consider bringing a waterproof phone case or a portable charger for added convenience.
  • Travel adapters: If you’re traveling from a different country, bring the appropriate travel adapters to ensure you can charge your devices without any issues.
  • Travel documents: Remember to pack your passport, any required visas, cruise tickets, and any other necessary travel documents. It’s a good idea to keep them in a waterproof bag to protect them from any potential water damage.

While this list covers the essential items, be sure to personalize it based on your specific needs and preferences. Consider any additional items you may require for specific activities or events you plan to participate in during your Caribbean cruise.

By packing these essentials, you’ll be well-prepared for your Caribbean adventure and able to fully enjoy all that your cruise has to offer.

Preparing for a Caribbean cruise in December requires careful consideration of your wardrobe to ensure you’re stylishly dressed and comfortable in the warm, tropical climate. By selecting the appropriate attire for daytime activities, beach outings, formal nights, and casual evenings, you’ll be able to fully immerse yourself in the Caribbean experience. Remember to pack suitable footwear that combines style and comfort, as well as accessories that add a personal touch to your outfits.

Key items to include in your packing list are sunscreen, insect repellent, medications, and a basic first aid kit. Additionally, bring an ample supply of swimwear and cover-ups to make the most of the beautiful beaches. Comfortable walking shoes are essential for exploring the ports of call, while light layers will come in handy for cooler evenings or air-conditioned areas on the ship.

Ensure that you have all necessary electronics, travel adapters, and travel documents, including your passport and cruise tickets. By carefully considering and packing these essentials, you’ll be well-prepared for a memorable Caribbean cruise experience.

Remember to strike a balance between style and practicality throughout your cruise. Embrace the vibrant colors and tropical prints that the Caribbean inspires, while opting for lightweight fabrics that allow for breathability and quick drying.

As you embark on your Caribbean cruise adventure, don’t forget to soak in the sun, enjoy the stunning beaches, and immerse yourself in the vibrant culture. Be sure to include a pair or two in your packing list for your next winter cruise adventure.

If you are planning to embark on a winter cruise, it is important to be prepared for the chilly temperatures. The key to staying warm and comfortable during your cruise is to pack the right clothing. A puffer jacket and scarf are the perfect combination to keep you warm and snug on your winter cruise.

A puffer jacket is a staple item in any winter wardrobe, and it is a must-have for your cruise. These jackets are designed to trap heat and keep you warm in cold temperatures. They are available in various styles and designs, but the most popular ones are the long puffy jackets which are perfect for a cruise. This type of jacket is lightweight and packable while also being warm and durable.

A scarf is another essential item to add to your winter cruise wardrobe. Not only does it add flair to your outfit, but it is also an important accessory in helping you keep warm on chilly days. Opt for wool or cashmere scarves to keep your neck protected and add an extra layer of insulation to your jacket. In addition, a scarf can complement any casual or formal outfit and can add an extra touch of style to your overall look.

When choosing a puffer jacket and scarf, make sure to consider the color and style that best suits you. Neutral shades like black, grey, or navy blue are versatile and can match with almost any outfit. However, if you’re feeling bold, go for brighter colors like red, yellow or orange which can add a pop of color to your outfit and can make you stand out from the crowd.

In conclusion, a puffer jacket and scarf are the perfect combination for any winter cruise. They will keep you warm and comfortable as you enjoy the scenic view of the snow-filled landscapes. Always remember to pack smart and be prepared for whatever the weather may bring. With the right clothing, you can ensure a memorable and enjoyable cruise experience, even during the colder months.

Dress for Seafood Success: What to Wear to a Crab Feast.

When on a winter cruise, deciding what to wear can be tricky. You want to be warm enough to enjoy the cool breezes and chilly weather, but you also want to look stylish and presentable. One option that strikes a balance between comfort, warmth, and fashion is a wool sweater and jeans. This classic combination is versatile and chic, making it a great choice for many cruise activities.

There are many different types of wool sweaters to choose from, including chunky knit crewnecks, turtlenecks, and cardigans. These styles come in various colors and patterns, allowing you to choose a piece that complements your personal style. Wool is an excellent material for keeping you warm, as it insulates you even when wet. It also breathes better than synthetic fabrics, allowing it to regulate your body temperature.

Pairing your wool sweater with jeans is a no-brainer. This casual look is perfect for onboard activities like trivia night or lounging around the ship. You can also dress it up with a nice pair of boots and some simple accessories for a more refined look. With so many washes and cuts available, jeans offer a lot of ways to customize your outfit to your preferences.

Wool sweaters and jeans can also be dressed up or down depending on the weather. If it's really cold outside, you can layer a coat over your sweater and wear a scarf and hat for added warmth. On milder days, you can skip the coat and wear your sweater instead. Wool is known for its moisture-wicking properties, so you won't feel sweaty or uncomfortable even if the temperature starts to rise.

All in all, a wool sweater and jeans are a smart choice for a winter cruise. They're fashionable, comfy and warm, making them the perfect addition to your winter cruising wardrobe. By mixing and matching different pieces, you can create a range of outfits that are suitable for any onboard or off-board activities you want to enjoy. So, pack your favorite sweater and jeans, and get ready for a fantastic winter vacation!

Styling a Mustard Dress: Pairing Tips for Colorful Tights

When planning for a winter cruise, the thought of what to wear comes to mind. As the temperature outside can be quite chilly, it is essential to keep warm by packing winter jackets, gloves, and hats. However, it is also important to consider suitable footwear to keep comfortable throughout your trip.

One of the most crucial items to bring along is a waterproof coat. It would help if you opted for a jacket that is thick, has a lining, and is waterproof. This way, you are protected against rain, harsh winds, and snow with the added bonus of being fashionably on-point. A suitable winter jacket will not only keep you warm but also ensure you stay dry.

Another essential item to bring with you is a pair of waterproof winter boots. While the shoes you wear may depend on the location of the cruise, it is important to choose boots that will not only keep your feet warm, but must also provide ample grip to prevent falls on slippery surfaces. There are some stylish options available in the market that can be a perfect match for your winter outfits.

When packing for a winter cruise, consider the importance of layering. It is important to bring along clothes that complement each other in terms of warmth and trendiness. Layering your clothes in different styles gives you the flexibility to manage your temperature throughout the day and adjust when necessary.

It is also important to pay attention to accessories that may be essential for the winter journey. These include gloves, thick socks, scarves, and winter hats. These accessories complete your winter look and provide essential warmth for your head, neck, and hands.

In overall, bringing waterproof boots and coat is the key to staying warm and comfortable on a winter cruise. Along with layering, one can look stylish and confident no matter how low the temperature plummets. By packing ahead of time and making a checklist of essential items, one can ensure a stress-free and enjoyable winter cruise experience.

Matching Heels: Choosing the Perfect Color for a Burgundy Dress

When it comes to cruising during the winter season, it's essential to pack smartly with warm, comfortable clothes. Thermal underwear and turtlenecks can be your best friends to keep you cozy and comfortable throughout the trip. These layering essentials will protect you from the frigid temperatures and winter winds, allowing you to enjoy your vacation to the fullest.

Thermal underwear is a great base layer for a winter cruise. You can choose from long-sleeved tops and bottoms, or a full-body suit. The fabric traps your body heat and keeps you warm, even in sub-zero temperatures. This type of clothing is lightweight and doesn't take much space in your suitcase, making it perfect for packing. You can wear it under your regular clothes, so no one will even know you are wearing thermal underwear.

A turtleneck is a versatile piece of clothing you can wear with almost anything. It's warm, stylish and perfect for layering. A thick, woolen turtleneck will keep your neck warm and act as a buffer against the chilly winds. You can wear it with a blazer, coat, or sweater, and it will never go out of style. You can also opt for a turtleneck that's made of lightweight fabric such as cashmere or cotton, if you want something more chic and trendy.

If you want to keep your feet warm, invest in a good pair of thermal socks. They will protect your feet from getting cold and numb, especially if you plan to go on winter excursions or go for a walk on the deck. For footwear, boots are a must-have on a winter cruise. Choose waterproof boots with a good grip, so you can walk comfortably on icy or slippery surfaces.

To complete your winter cruise wardrobe, bring warm gloves, a woolen hat, and a scarf. These accessories will give you added protection and style, making you look and feel good throughout your journey. With thermal underwear and turtlenecks as your foundation, you can mix and match clothes and accessories to create the perfect winter cruise outfit.

Off-Road Gear: Essential Attire for Adventurous Excursions

When it comes to packing for a winter cruise, it's crucial to keep yourself warm and cozy during your travels. The cold seas can be brutal, especially in the early mornings and late evenings when the temperature drops to low digits. And that is where a fur-lined parka and gloves come in handy.

Fur-lined parkas and gloves are designed to keep you warm, regardless of the weather and wind conditions. These pieces of clothing are typically insulated with ultra-warm materials such as goose or duck down, polyester fiberfill, or fleece. These materials are built to trap heat close to your body, creating a cozy layer of warmth.

One of the main advantages of a fur-lined parka is its length. Regular coats usually end at the waistline, leaving your legs vulnerable to the cold. However, parkas extend below the waistline and cover your hips, ensuring you stay warm all the way. A fur-lined parka is also waterproof, making it suitable for exploring destinations with snow or sleet.

Gloves, on the other hand, are essential in keeping your fingers warm. When exposed to frigid temperature, your fingers can quickly lose their nimbleness and become frostbitten. Therefore, consider investing in a pair of insulated gloves designed explicitly for winter weather conditions. These gloves should have a comfortable inner lining and a water-resistant outer layer.

In summary, if you're heading out on a winter cruise, make sure you pack a fur-lined parka and gloves. These two items will keep you warm and comfortable throughout your journey. Don't forget to layer up with other warm clothing such as wool sweaters, thick socks, and insulated pants. Remember, the right gear is crucial to making the most of your winter cruise experience.

Choosing the Right Socks for Brown Shoes: A Color Guide

If you're planning on taking a cruise during the winter months, dressing warmly is essential. But just because it's cold outside, doesn't mean you can't look stylish and chic. One item that's perfect for any winter cruise is a cashmere sweater dress.

Not only is a cashmere sweater dress warm and cozy, but it's also incredibly versatile. You can dress it up with some heels and jewelry for a fancy dinner or keep it casual with some boots and a scarf for a day of sightseeing. This type of dress is perfect for layering, so you can add a thick coat or a scarf for additional warmth.

When it comes to styling a cashmere sweater dress for a winter cruise, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, make sure the dress fits well and isn't too tight or too loose. You'll want something that's comfortable and allows you to move around freely.

Another consideration is the color of the dress. Classic colors like black, navy, and gray are always a good choice, as they're easy to mix and match with other items in your wardrobe. You may also want to consider a brighter color like red or green to add a pop of color to your outfit.

Finally, don't forget to accessorize your cashmere sweater dress. A statement necklace or earrings can add some sparkle and glamour, while a scarf or hat can keep you warm and stylish. With the right accessories, you can take a simple sweater dress from basic to beautiful.

In conclusion, a cashmere sweater dress is a great choice for anyone planning on taking a winter cruise. It's warm, versatile, and can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. Just don't forget to layer and accessorize to create the perfect winter look.

Summer Style: Navigating Nantucket's Fashion Scene

If you're going on a winter cruise, figuring out what to wear can be tricky. You want to stay warm and cozy, but you also want to look stylish and trendy. One great option for a winter cruise outfit is a plaid flannel shirt and jeans.

Plaid flannel shirts are incredibly versatile and can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. They are also perfect for keeping you warm during chilly days at sea. Pair your flannel shirt with dark wash jeans for a classic, timeless look that never goes out of style.

To add extra warmth, you can layer a sweater or hoodie over your flannel shirt. This will keep you cozy and comfortable while adding a touch of casual flair to your outfit.

For footwear, opt for ankle boots or sneakers. They are comfortable and practical for exploring the ship and participating in outdoor winter activities. Make sure to bring along a warm coat, scarf, and gloves for when you're out on deck or exploring the ports of call.

When it comes to accessories, keep it simple. A watch and a pair of sunglasses will do the trick. If you want to add a pop of color to your outfit, you can opt for a statement scarf or hat.

Overall, a plaid flannel shirt and jeans is a perfect outfit choice for a winter cruise. It's comfortable, practical, and stylish. So, pack your bags, hit the high seas, and look great while doing it!

Dress to Impress: What to Wear to Shen Yun

A winter cruise can be a wonderful way to explore some of the most beautiful regions of the world while indulging in some much-needed rest and relaxation. However, packing for a winter cruise can be a challenge. Balancing the need for warmth and comfort against the desire to look stylish and put-together can be tricky, but one thing is for certain: you'll need a good ski jacket and pants.

A proper ski jacket is an essential item for a winter cruise. Look for a jacket that is lightweight but insulated, with a waterproof outer layer. It should have a hood for extra warmth and protection from the wind, and ideally, it will have pockets both inside and outside. Before you pack your jacket, make sure it fits well, and you can move around comfortably in it. Remember to consider what layers you'll be wearing under your jacket when you try it on.

A good pair of ski pants is just as important as a jacket and will ensure that you stay dry and warm, no matter what the weather conditions. Look for pants made from waterproof and breathable materials, with a high waist and reinforced knees. They should be roomy enough to allow you to move around easily, but not so loose that they get in the way. You'll probably be wearing these pants over other layers, so be sure to try them on with the rest of your outfit to make sure everything fits comfortably.

When selecting a ski jacket and pants, consider the color and style of the rest of your winter cruise wardrobe. Avoid bright colors that clash with other items, and look for a style that complements your other clothing items. Remember that your ski gear is likely to be the heaviest and bulkiest items you pack, so choose carefully to make sure everything fits into your luggage.

Investing in high-quality ski gear for your winter cruise might seem like a lot of money, but it is worth it in the long run. A good jacket and pants can last for many winters if you take good care of them. Don't skimp on the quality because you'll want to be comfortable and warm while exploring the world in style. With the right ski jacket and pants in your luggage, you'll be ready for whatever adventures come your way on your winter cruise.

What to Wear on a Cold Weather Cruise

Guests out on an excursion to a cooler cruise destination

Make the most of any winter or cold weather cruise with our top packing tips to keep you snug

A winter cruise can be a magical experience. Imagine passing snow capped mountains, enjoying the brisk sea air, or sipping hot cocoa from the bookmark cafe while you’re wrapped up snug in a blanket. But knowing what to wear is key for making the most of your trip. Here’s our guide on what clothes to wear on a cruise, if the weather is likely to be rather chilly.

Casual daytime clothing

What to wear on a cool cruise

During the day, you’re most likely to be exploring the ship, off on excursions, or just relaxing on the ship. Whatever you’re doing, comfort and warmth are key, so layering well is important.

  • Base layer: Start with good thermal underwear or a moisture-wicking base layer. Look for soft, snug options - tops and bottoms.
  • Mid layer: Add a cosy fleece or wool sweater for insulation. These will help trap warm air close to your body, helping you feel snug.
  • Outer layer: A waterproof and windproof jacket is crucial on any winter cruise. Look for something with a hood and adjustable cuffs to keep out the cold wind and rain.

The right trousers

Jeans are go-to clothes for a cruise. But it’s important to note that they don’t handle moisture well. If there’s a chance of rain or clamminess, consider insulated options or those made of quick-dry materials. Thermal leggings or tights can also be worn under regular trousers for added warmth.

If you’re in cold or even sub-zero temperatures, waterproof, insulated boots are a must. They should be comfortable for walking and standing. Thick, wool socks will keep your feet warm. Bring several pairs in case they get wet.

How to dress for the evening

Evenings on a cruise often mean dinner in the main dining room or attending shows. These occasions call for a bit more style, but you still want to stay warm.

For men, a suit or dress trousers with a button-down shirt and a warm blazer can be a great option. A tie or bow tie can add an extra touch of formality.

Ladies, meanwhile, might want to go for a long-sleeved dress paired with opaque tights. Consider a pashmina or shawl for added warmth and glamour.

For more casual evenings on board, men can opt for chinos or dark jeans paired with a sweater or a collared shirt. For ladies, a nice blouse with jeans or a skirt with tights works well. Layer with a cardigan or a light sweater if you’d like some extra cosiness.

How to dress for Formal nights on board

When it comes to heading out and about, excursions can vary from exploring a port town to hiking in a national park.  Dressing in layers is still key, but your outer layer may need to be more rugged, especially if you’ll be exposed to the elements. Waterproof hiking boots are ideal for more adventurous excursions. Plus, don’t forget the accessories, wherever you’re headed. Knitted hats, gloves, and scarves are essential. Wool or synthetic materials are best as they retain heat even when wet. And remember that sunglasses aren’t just for the tropics. They’re important to help protect your eyes from glare off snow or water.

Packing tips

Making the most of your luggage space is key whenever you’re travelling. Packing the right clothes for a cruise is no different. Yet with cold weather clothing being in general more bulky than summer wear, you’ll want to avoid an overstuffed case. Here are our tips on the best way to pack:

Packing cubes can help keep your clothes organised and make it easier to find what you need.

Rolling instead of folding can save space and also reduce wrinkles.

Make sure you have enough layering options. The weather might take you by surprise, and you don’t want to feel the chill.

At the same time, don’t overpack, especially when it comes to bulky items like coats and puffer jackets.

Evenings are a chance to dress up and feel special, whether it’s for a theatre performance or five-star meal. When thinking about what to wear on a cruise in the evening, you can generally expect a neatly informal, smart-casual dress code with one or two dressier occasions during your stay. But it’s still a good idea to check the dress code, as many cruise lines have different dress codes for different areas of the ship.

Cruise Outfits for Women

Having trouble figuring out what exactly to wear on a cruise? You’ve come to the right place. In this post, I’ll share cruise outfits for women that I’ve worn on my past cruises as a Millennial cruiser, and give you inspiration on your cruise wardrobe.

In the past few years, I’ve been on 8+ cruises, and each time I’ve perfected all the outfits you’d need to pack for your cruise.

Cruise Outfits

I’ve been on all kinds of itineraries from shorter Caribbean cruises to long Mediterranean cruises, and from my experience, the cruise outfits generally stay the same.

You’ll need to consider what you’ll wear on the ship during the day, what you’ll wear on port days, and evening attire- which I’ll cover in this post.

So whether this is your first cruise or if you are a seasoned cruiser, I hope you find some new inspiration for your upcoming cruise with these new cruise outfits.

Daytime Cruise Outfits

Embarkation day cruise outfits.

Cruise Outfits

The first day of your cruise is exciting! You’re getting accustomed to your new home at sea with lots of exploring and finding a delicious cocktail.

Now before the fun of exploring, keep in mind you’ll be doing a lot of waiting around to get on the ship, plus going through security, and perhaps waiting for your room to be ready.

For embarkation day I would plan on wearing a casual outfit with lighter materials with layers- or even your airplane outfit . Something lightweight, yet appropriate to wear wandering around the ship.

I wouldn’t worry too much about what to wear on Embarkation day, but having a swimsuit ready to go is a great idea.

Pro Tip: Wear a swimsuit underneath your clothing with a stylish coverup and take advantage of the resort deck pool while everyone gets settled or hits up the buffet. It will feel like you’ve added an extra day on to your cruise!

What to wear on a Cruise Sea Day

Cruise Outfits

Stick to casual clothing during the day on a cruise. A typical sea day on a cruise begins with breakfast, you can wear casual items like t-shirts, jean shorts, etc.

I like to wear cute sets, or shorts and a cute top that’s easy to throw on when heading to the breakfast buffet. This is the least formal part of your cruise, but I would avoid walking around in your pajamas .

what to wear on a cruise

After that, you’ll probably walk around the ship or head to the resort deck which you’ll need to bring a bathing suit and beach coverup .

I always like to bring a larger tote bag so I can stick in all my essentials that I would need for a full pool day like sunscreen, a book, a water bottle, and extra clothes if I decide to swim.

Just think about wearing classic resort casual wear for the daytime.

Not sure what resort casual wear is? I have a full post that explains it. Read What is resort casual wear & how to wear it .

Now in the early evening after lounging on the resort deck, I like to wear a nice sundress or something a little dressy to have a sunset cocktail in. Thankfully for us ladies, I can usually wear the same dress to dinner without a problem.

What to Wear on a Caribbean Cruise Excursion

Cruise Outifs

I find a lot of Caribbean shore excursions involve lots of water activities like swimming & snorkeling, or boat excursions.

For a Caribbean cruise excursion, I would wear a swimsuit plus a coverup , and additional dry clothes if you want to change into something more comfortable after your day in the water, especially for warm destinations.

If you are not headed on a water excursion, wear casual clothing like sundresses , shirts, and shorts in light breathable materials like linen, cotton, or jersey.

Plus a comfortable pair of shoes you can easily walk around in for different terrain.

I took a cooking class in St. Kitts on a cruise excursion. I wore a casual top and shorts and everyone else wore something similar. Keep in mind that Caribbean islands are hot and humid.

What to Wear on a Mediterranean Cruise Excursion

Here are some Cruise outfit ideas I wore on my Mediterranean cruise excursions in Italy, Greece, Croatia, and Montenegro.

Cruise Outfits Excursion

If you are going on a Mediterranean cruise, your ports of call and excursions tend to be a bit different than a Caribbean Cruise.

Instead of mostly swim & snorkel excursions you’d find on a Caribbean cruise, Mediterranean cruises have more city sightseeing excursions that involve a lot of walking , touring, and being in a city center.

For example, if you stop in Naples Itay, you could explore the Amalfi Coast, Capri, Naples, and even Pompei which all involve different kinds of daytime outfits.

I like to wear lightweight breathable dresses and comfortable walking shoes with a larger day bag to keep all my essentials inside.

birkenstock arizona big buckle sandal

Surprisingly my Birkenstock Arizona sandals were my go-to shoe on all my excursions. I even climbed a mountain in Kotor Montenegro in them and they were still comfortable afterward.

Evening Cruise Outfits

evening cruise outfits

To be honest, I think that the ladies have an easier time with evening cruise outfits because mostly anything goes as long as it’s dressy. Darker-colored sundresses , cocktail dresses , or even pants with a dressy top will work.

Men on the other hand have more rules like long pants and collared shirts.

Like I previously mentioned, after lounging at the pool deck, I like to get dressed up in a nice sundress to have a sunset cocktail before dinner. I usually head straight to dinner in the same dress and never had any problems.

Casual Dinner Outfits

I find that a lot more cruises are ditching formal dinners and instead have an “evening chic” dress code which can mean dressing elegant and sophisticated in your way.

Here are some examples of “casual” dinner cruise outfits. Keep in mind that I like to dress up no matter what the dress code is.

Cruise Outfits Evening

Here is a great example of a casual dinner outfit that doesn’t involve a dress. A pair of nice dark pants and a dressy top and flats will do the job for casual nights.

Formal Dinner Outfits

Here are some examples of formal dinner cruise outfits for the main dining room I’ve worn on recent cruises:

formal cruise outfits

Some cruise lines have “ formal ” nights, but even in recent years the strictness of the dress code has become more lax . Formal dress codes for ladies include cocktail dresses, elegant skirts, and evening-wear blouses.

But if you still want to wear a formal evening gown, it’s welcome. It’s a great excuse to dress up a little.

Double-check which cruise line you are cruising with to see the exact evening dress code.

What to wear on a cruise

No matter if you are going on a Caribbean Cruise or a Mediterranean cruise, here are things you should pack for your next cruise.

Pack sundresses to wear during the day, early evening, and perhaps dinner. These can be flowy maxi dresses or shorter styles. My favorite Amazon Maxi dress looks more expensive than it is and works great on a cruise.

Bonus tip: find dresses in non-wrinkle materials such as jersey material so you won’t have to worry about trying to get the wrinkles out.

Swimwear & Cover-ups:

what to wear on a cruise

You will be living in a swimsuit & coverup on your cruise, so be sure you bring your favorites. I love this one piece from Amazon . It’s flattering on any body type, comes in multiple colors, and looks expensive.

This beach coverup from Amazon is also one of my favorites. It’s in a nice cotton gauze-like material and looks so sophisticated.

Lightweight Jacket / Scarf

No matter when or where your cruise is, a lightweight jacket is a good idea for added warmth on cooler nights or heavy inside air conditioning. This could be a denim jacket, a lightweight sweater, or shall.

I’d recommend going for an extra-large scarf or sweater that still can be worn over your shoulders during the evening. It’s not too casual and looks dressy, while still keeping you warm.

Dark Pants / Jeans:

Be sure to bring a dark pair of pants or jeans if you don’t want to wear dresses to dinner. Dark pant goes with any dressy top, and it’s a basic you can wear more than once on your cruise.

Evening Dress

A nice evening dress is essential for any cruise. I find that a little black dress is a perfect item to bring because it’s dressy and easy to pack.

Some of my favorite evening dresses from Amazon .

winter cruise outfits

A pair of sandals that you can easily slip on and off are a must. Ideally, bring a pair that you don’t mind getting wet – especially if you plan on going to the resort pool deck or any water excursion.

You can bring heels, but keep in mind that you’ll be doing plenty of walking on cruise ships, and most of the time they are carpeted. If your heels are uncomfortable on land, they will be uncomfortable at sea.

A great compromise is a shorter kitten heel, a wedge, or a dressy flat.

A pair of white sneakers go with everything and are comfortable to put on after wearing sandals for so many days. These are great to have for strenuous activities, adventurous excursions, and exploring ports of call.

Sun Hat & Pair of Sunglasses

Don’t forget your accessories like a sun hat and a pair of sunglasses. To avoid your hat getting blown away by the wind, find one with a chin strap.

canvas tote bag

You’d be surprised at how many things you need to bring with you when you leave your cruise cabin.

I love bringing a stylish tote bag to throw all my essentials for the day inside like sunscreen, book, phone or tablet, an extra change of clothes, towel, etc.

I recommend this stylish tote from Amazon that I wore on my recent cruise. Or I love a sturdy canvas tote that goes with any outfit.

Mens Cruise Outfits

I can’t leave the men hanging, so here are some men’s cruise outfit ideas:

Men’s Day Outfits

During the day, men can wear casual clothing like swim trunks and a neutral shirt that is acceptable for the breakfast buffet and the resort deck.

Men’s Evening Cruise Outfits

Cruise Outfits Men

Now unfortunately for the men, the evening cruise line dress code applies mostly to men.

Cruises suggest men wear in general long pants or nice jeans, a collared dress shirt, and dress shoes.

For Formal Nights : Men should wear dress slacks, a collared shirt, and a sports coat. A tux or suit is optional, but double-check the specifics from your cruise line.

Cruise Outfits FAQ:

How many outfits to pack per day on a cruise.

I would pack two outfits per day on a cruise- something to wear during the day either on board or at a port of call, and something a bit dressier for the evening. Now you can wear a swimsuit & coverup more than once on your vacation, so keep that in mind when you’re packing.

Do you dress up for dinner on a cruise?

Generally yes, you do dress up for dinner on a cruise. However, a lot of cruises are dropping the mandatory “formal” night where you had to dress to the nines in black tie attire. Instead, you’ll find smart casual, or evening chic dress codes in place for dinner.

Cruise OUtfits for Ladies

What are the best clothes to wear on a cruise?

You’ll want to wear something comfortable and casual during the day. Don’t forget your swimsuit for excursions or lounging at the resort deck. And add something a bit dressy for the evening.

What NOT to wear on a cruise?

Now there are a few things not to wear on a cruise that pertain mostly to the evening. Flip flops, swimsuits tank tops, and shorts are generally not allowed inside restaurants during dinner.

Another thing to keep in mind is your footwear. Cruise ships are huge and you’ll be doing a surprising amount of walking (especially if your cabin is on the opposite of the buffet) Don’t wear shoes you can’t walk in like super high heels , etc.

Let’s Sum it up on Cruise Outfits

I hope you found this post helpful for packing for your next cruise vacation. To sum it up here are things you need to think about when packing for cruise outfits.

  • During the day you’ll want to bring something to wear around the cruise ship. Think comfortable and casual.
  • Bring a swimsuit + coverup for days on the resort deck.
  • I always recommend bringing something easy to throw on for quick runs to the buffet, especially in the morning for coffee!

Pro tip: bring a reusable insulated water bottle to fill up with coffee, water (or cocktails) to keep warm or cold throughout your cruise.

  • During the evening pack something a bit dressier. For ladies that can be dark pants and a dressy top or a nice dress. Men should bring long pants and a collared shirt for dinner time.

How to Know What to Wear During a Winter Cruise

winter cruise outfits

One of the most popular seasons for cruises is the time between Christmas and the start of spring. For many vacationers, it’s all about escaping the snowy and gray winter months. As you begin the planning process for your winter cruise, you may begin to wonder what the weather will be like. Sure, you may be headed to a tropical location, but it’s still January, right? In order to help you figure out what to wear during a winter cruise, let us give you a few things to remember.

Remember Warm Clothes for the Journey to Your Port of Departure

You may be thinking about which bathing suit you want to pack or the linen pants you’re going to wear to dinner, but don’t get too far ahead of yourself. Before you ever make it to a tropical climate, you’re going to have to leave the cold city from which you live. Whether you mean to take an airplane or drive a few hundred miles in the car, you’ll need some warm clothes to get you where you’re going. The same can be said for your journey home. You don’t want to arrive back home with only a pair of shorts to get you through the snow-covered city.

Destinations Are Key to Knowing What to Wear During a Winter Cruise

For most people, a winter cruise means hitting up the Caribbean or some other warm destination. That’s not always the case, though. Depending on where you are traveling throughout the world, the attire you need to be packing for a winter cruise can alter dramatically. Each part of the world can have its own kind of climate, even if some areas share certain tendencies during the winter months. Research the area you’ll be visiting on your cruise and see if you can come up with specific suggestions on what to wear from people who have been there before.

The Temperature Difference Between Night and Day

No matter where you are traveling on your winter cruise , remember that temperatures can sometimes vary wildly between night and day. During a Caribbean vacation touring the Cayman Islands, you may wear a t-shirt and shorts during the day but throw on a windbreaker at night. On that same vacation, you’ll likely find daytime temperatures over 80 degrees with the night coming in around the upper 60s to low 70s. In other parts of the world, you may not be quite so lucky. A trip to Baja, Mexico, for instance, might be in the mid-70s during the day, while dropping down to 50 degrees at night.

Formal Nights on a Winter Cruise

As you pack your outfits geared toward fun in the sun, don’t forget to pack something nice for dinner. Dress requirements have relaxed somewhat over the years, so you may not need that fancy tuxedo. Be sure to check with your cruise company to see what its suggested attire is for night-time activities or themed dinners . Even if you think it’s safe to keep things fairly casual, pack at least one nicer outfit, just in case.

Layers Are Your Friend

Warm-natured? Cold-natured? Somewhere in between? Regardless of how your body temperature affects you, our best advice is to dress in layers. One reason for this is due to the differences you may feel between staying inside the ship and walking around the deck outside. Your cruise company knows what season it is, so the A/C is going to be set to something accommodating to that indoors. It would be nice for you to bring a few accessories that can help you easily transition from hot to cold temperatures and back again. Scarves, vests, sweaters, and light jackets are all good ideas for a winter cruise.

Hope for the Best, Prepare for Whatever Can Happen

In conjunction with our encouragement toward dressing in layers, we also think you should pack a little variety into your suitcase. If you don’t know what to expect, think of ways in which you can be ready for whatever can happen. Worried about the cold? Bring a hoodie. Don’t want to get soaked in the rare occurrence of rain? Roll up a light rain jacket and keep it in an easy to reach place. You can also pack an extra pair of jeans or shorts so that you’ll have something ready for an unexpected day of weather.

Check Weather Reports Online the Week Before

No matter what we say here, people who are worried about what to wear during a winter cruise are going to want to check the weather the week before they depart. For people traveling through the Caribbean during a winter cruise, you can reasonably expect the temperature to range between 60 and 80 degrees each day . Anomalies, however, are possible. It’s unlikely for the weather to change drastically enough for you to revolutionize your planned wardrobe, but the weather report will give you a better understanding of what to expect.

Balance Weather Expectations Against Your Home Climate

Have you ever had a relative from Florida visit you in Chicago during the winter? Chances are that person was much colder than you despite both of you braving the same cold weather. Our home turf influences how our bodies react to extreme temperatures on either end. During your winter cruise, the couple from Wisconsin might feel like they’ve found perfect beach weather, while the woman from Southern California could be a little cold at the same temperature. Keep that in mind when you’re planning what to wear during a winter cruise.

Don’t Forget About Sun Protection

We can go back and forth all day about whether you should pack a sweater or not, but one thing you won’t want to forget is sun protection . The sun and its rays can be plenty dangerous for your body, even if it’s 60 degrees outside. Sunglasses, sunscreen, and anything else SPF-related you use to block out the sun is a good idea to pack. Want to know what to wear during a winter cruise? A little sunscreen never hurts.

Short of picking out your clothes for you each morning, these tips are the best way to know what to wear during a winter cruise. We also suggest you browse the information available to you from your cruise company. This will offer key details on dining attire and more. Don’t get caught with a week’s worth of the wrong outfit or you’re going to need a second cruise to destress you from the first!

At Premier Cruises, we offer some of the best family vacations and faith-based retreats you can imagine. Each year we travel through the Caribbean and other exciting places on a series of unforgettable excursions. What to Wear to Europe in Winter for a River Cruise

As soon as I booked my Viking River Christmas cruise, I started thinking about what I should pack. Packing for a winter river cruise takes a lot more planning than I am used to. I researched what to wear to Europe in winter for a river cruise and found some great suggestions. In fact, at the bottom of the article is a free printable packing list!

When I travel, I tend to visit a lot of locations. This allows me to pack a few outfits that I can wear over and over. A river cruise is a different story because you are with the same small group (under 200) for a week or more. The winter Christmas cruise also requires cold-weather clothing, which is bulkier to pack.

I wish I had known what to pack for a winter river cruise in Europe, so I decided to make a list to share what was most needed.

Whether you start packing for a winter river cruise three weeks before the embarkation date, or you’re the type who throws together a bag a few hours before heading to the airport, I thought I’d share my packing tips for a European winter river cruise.

What to Wear to Europe in Winter for a River Cruise

My cruise was in early December. I cruised on the Viking Eir from Basel to Amsterdam with a different stop on the Rhine river each day. We spent most of our time in Germany and it was cold. I wore two layers on the bottom and three on top each day, and I was still chilly on a few days when the wind added an additional nip to the air. Choosing what to wear to Europe in winter truly takes some planning.

winter cruise outfits

  • 1 pair of stretchy jeans
  • 1 pair of black dress pants
  • 1 pair of travel yoga pants (I brought my Betabrand yoga pants  because they have two hidden waistband security pockets above the front two pockets, and an additional hidden pocket above the back right pocket. for cash, credit cards or a passport).
  • 2 long-sleeved sweaters
  • 1 layering shirt

winter cruise outfits

  • 2 dresses (I suggest one black and one neutral color. This way you can dress them up with scarves. If you’re looking for dresses that are both cute and practical for cold-weather traveling, my favorites are the BetaBrand travel collection  and IceBreake r. Wear a pair of tights with the dresses and cut scarf!)
  • 1 maxi skirt
  • 1 set of pajamas
  • 4 pairs of socks
  • 10 underwear (including my favorite   Clever Travel Companion undies with hidden pockets ).
  • 2 bras (one black and one nude).
  • 4 decorative scarves
  • 1 warm Scarf

winter cruise outfits

Whatever you decide to pack, just be sure you have at least one pair of shoes that you’ll be comfortable walking in. River cruises offer a lot of free walking tours, and you don’t want to have to skip them because you didn’t bring the right shoes!

  • 1 pair of sneakers
  • 1 pair of flats or low heels for the boat

winter cruise outfits

Non-Clothing

winter cruise outfits

  • Camera jacket (In case it rains and you still want to take photos and protect your camera.)
  • Sunglasses (The weather can vary and I did have some bright sunny days. Sunglasses also come in handy on windy days and help protect your eyes from watering).
  • Cross body purse (You want to keep your valuables in front of you at the busy Christmas markets).
  • Travel umbrella

Silver Biotics Nano Silver Healing Lotion Cream.

When packing for a winter river cruise in Europe, don’t forget a really moisturizing lotion. I love Silver Biotics Nano Silver Healing Lotion Cream. This 1.02 oz gem, available in unscented, lavender, and grapefruit, easily fits in your purse or bum bag and is TSA-friendly.

Infused with SilverSol and hyaluronic acid, it deeply moisturizes and hydrates dry skin, perfect for the chilly winter air. Suitable for use on the whole body, it keeps your skin soft and protected throughout your journey.

What you don’t need

  • Viking rooms come with hair dryers and the rooms are supplied with shampoo, conditioner, body wash and lotion.
  • Viking Cruises are casual, so you do not need formal attire for the evenings or dinner.

Packing Tip: If you are traveling with someone from the same location, pack half and half. This means putting half of your clothes and other items in each suitcase. Just in case a bag gets lost or delayed, you still have half of what you packed for the trip.

I would love to go on a Viking Cruise, but for now I’ll just check out the packing cubes you mention.

Laryssa – the cubes are amazing. I never pack without them!

Great post, awesome list ? thank you for the cool read. Also I love those travel pants!

Super comfortable. Thanks for visiting the site!

Great tips about not just what you do need…but what you don’t need too! Always good to know there are hairdryers onboard when it’s too cold out during a winter cruise to go out with wet hair!

I agree. What you don’t need to bring is just as important!

I read NO FLAT IRONS and CURLING IRONS. Is this enforced? I have bought Velcro type rollers and am experimenting with those. Viking river cruises.

This is not enforced. I brought a flat iron on both of my Viking Cruises.

Have you written a review of your cruise? We just booked the same itinerary, and I’d love to hear your thoughts on the cruise itself.

Hi Tina, I have written a review: https://52perfectdays.com/articles/rhine-river-cruise/ and if you are planning to stay in Basel an extra day or two, check out this amazing hotel! https://52perfectdays.com/articles/der-teufelhof-basel-switzerland/

If you have any questions about Viking please let me know! Be happy to help!

Thanks so much! Just checked back to see if you had posted the stop by stop list of what to eat and buy, but I don’t see it? Thanks again for taking the time to do this – it’s immensely helpful!

Day-To-Night Outfits

To bring on your cruise.

Explore the world in style with these five perfect cruise outfits that'll keep you comfortable as you go from pool deck to onshore excursion and back again. Put together a capsule wardrobe made up of a few versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched for any adventure.

The quintessential cruise style consists of chic but relaxed pieces. Think breezy fabrics, loose silhouettes, light neutrals, bright colors and beachy accessories.

Lean into tropical prints, red and coral hues that pop against aquamarine waters, woven hats and classic sunglasses.

Your cruise outfits will be as fun to wear as they are to look at.

Port-Day Wardrobe

Fashion and function combine on days strolling through port cities.

Breezy top or polo shirt

Flowy maxi dress

Wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses

Comfortable sandals

Capris or shorts

A cardigan or button-up shirt adds evening elegance when it's time for dinner.

Onboard Ensemble

Go for comfort on those relaxing sea days.

Swimsuit or stylish swim trunks

Sundress or a loose nautical-themed shirt

Panama hat and sunglasses

Comfortable sandals or flip-flops

Swap flip-flops for dressy sandals or closed-toed shoes before heading to the onboard restaurant.

Adventure Attire

Be ready for all of the fun cruise ship adventures, from the skydive simulator to the waterpark.

Lightweight shirt

Athletic shorts or leggings

Long-sleeved shirt, sunglasses and hat

Shoes with sturdy soles

Before showtime at the onboard theater, change into a skirt or trousers, dress shoes and an airy scarf for a polished look.

Beach-Day Outfit

Nothing says beach paradise vacation like an outfit that's laid-back yet luxe.

Swim shorts with a Cuban collar shirt

Hat and sunglasses

Swimsuit under a romper or sundress

Have dinner reservations? Trade your beach sandals for smart penny loafers, and add seashell-inspired jewelry or a sleek watch

Sightseeing Cruise Outfit

Opt for loose, breathable fabrics on big days out to roam any terrain from rainforests to ruins.

A lightweight shirt

Socks and boots or sneakers

Sunhat and sunglasses

Breezy linen pants

This outfit can easily carry you into the evening, but dainty jewelry, colorful slip-on shoes, a Panama hat and swapping from a backpack to handbag will create a softer look.

Rack Of Clothes, Saint John, New Brunswick

Getting There

Get packed and ready to set sail on the Ultimate World Cruise.

T hough it's tempting to pack everything, cruise outfits are meant to be laid-back, so plan to wear a few items of clothing more than once — no one will judge you, promise. Pack a few key staple pieces that can be paired together in several different mix and match styles — this is called a capsule wardrobe. To ensure you can put together a great outfit each day, pack mindfully in one color palette or scheme — colors like red, coral and yellow will pop in pictures when photographed in front of a turquoise sea. If you're wondering what to pack for a five-day cruise, bring along six shirts, six sets of underwear, and three to four bottoms. Then, throw in at least two swimsuits, so you always have one dry. Finally, pajamas, a jacket or sweater, athleisure wear, a hat, sunglasses, sandals, athletic shoes, and dress shoes round out a perfect cruise outfit packing list.

Breezy fabrics like cotton and linen in a loose silhouette keep you cool and covered under the sun during the daytime, and with a few adaptable accessories, you can transition seamlessly into a polished evening look. No matter if you're spending your day sipping an ice-cold cocktail on deck, strolling along a sandy beach, adventuring on jungle trails or searching for local treats, these five versatile day-to-night cruise outfit ideas will make packing easy, getting you on island time, in no time.

1. Port-Day Wardrobe

If you'll be spending your port days shopping, dining, and exploring new cities and towns, you'll need cruise outfit ideas that are both stylish and practical. A flowy top or polo shirt, bright-colored capris or khaki shorts, comfortable shoes, sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat will keep you cool during the day. When the sun goes down, dress it up with a button-down shirt, shawl or cardigan.

2. Onboard Ensemble

For days spent at sea, you'll want cruise attire that's comfortable and convertible. A swimsuit underneath a sundress or flowy shirt and shorts is an outfit that will take you from the pool to the spa to the mini golf course and beyond. When it's time for dinner, swap your shorts for trousers and slip on dressy sandals or closed-toe shoes. If you're cruising with your kids, be prepared for spills and stains with an extra shirt.

Solid-colored board shorts paired with a button-up shirt (nautical print encouraged) work just as well for a day on deck. Then, change from swim trunks and flip-flops to chinos and dress shoes before heading to the onboard restaurant. A Panama hat adds an element of holiday luxe no matter the time of day.

3. Adventure Attire

The best outfits for a cruise are the ones you can wear all day long. If you have a list of adventure activities planned for your shore excursions, or if you'll be braving the ship's RipCord® by iFly® skydive simulator and Zip Line, pack accordingly. During the day, wear athletic shorts, a neutral-colored tank top, and sneakers or sandals. Don't forget a hat, sunglasses and a long-sleeved sun shirt in your day bag. Need to dress up for dinner? It's simple. Pack extra clothes in a tote bag in case you don't have time to go back to your stateroom. Swap your athletic shorts for a flowy skirt or trousers, and trade your sneakers for a more formal pair of shoes, like chunky heels or loafers for a put-together look.

4. Beach-Day Outfit

For many, a cruise vacation is all about spending as much time as possible in or near the sea. Maybe this means claiming a lounge chair as your own, seeking a spot in the sand without footprints or swimming out into the clear blue water. When you're done wading in the water or soaking up the sun, a cover-up like a romper, oversized shirt or dress is always a stylish choice for wandering local shops and grabbing a seaside lunch. Quick-drying swim trunks are the go-to staple for this cruise outfit and is a perfect choice for kids. Just throw on a collared shirt and slip-on penny loafers, and you're good to go.

For dinner reservations, add an air of tropical elegance with a pair of wide-legged linen trousers or chinos in a solid color, paired with a linen top in a colorful print and some timeless accessories like a gauzy scarf, dangling necklace, a sleek watch or large sunglasses.

Make sure your cruise packing list includes a lightweight bag for your book, sun protection, wallet, camera, phone and a foldable dry bag tucked inside. When you're done swimming, you can stow your swimwear away in the dry bag without getting the rest of your items wet.

5. Sightseeing Cruise Outfit

When trying to figure out what to wear on a cruise, it's important to plan ahead and know what your must-dos are for your cruise vacation. For long days jam-packed with historical and natural sights to see, pack fabrics that are breathable and comfortable. Linen pants and a good pair of socks and boots are invaluable for rainforest hikes, while a lightweight long-sleeve shirt and a sunhat with a drawstring will keep you covered when visiting ancient ruins. If you're packing outfits for a cruise destination in a warm climate, bring something that can be worn over a swimsuit, so you're always ready to take a dip in hidden cenotes.

When it's time to hit the town at night, add some accessories to soften this look like dainty jewelry, colorful slip-on shoes, a Panama hat and a handbag.

It is completely normal to have tummy rolls. I come to realize that social media isn’t showing the reality… at all.

My happiest moments in life had nothing to do with the way my body looked.

I don’t have to be pretty like her, I can be pretty like …ME.

I AM perfect imperfection.

Dressing for a Cruise: Choosing the Best Outfits for Every Moment

Richard Hughes

Imagine stepping onto a luxurious cruise ship, the gentle sea breeze kissing your skin as you embark on a journey filled with relaxation and adventure. But wait, what will you wear? Finding the perfect outfits for your cruise can be both exciting and daunting. You want to look stylish, feel comfortable, and be prepared for any occasion that may arise during your voyage.

Picture yourself strolling on the deck at sunset in a chic ensemble that effortlessly transitions from day to night. Whether you’re lounging by the pool, exploring exotic ports of call, or dining under the stars, having the right outfits can elevate your cruise experience. In this article, we’ll guide you through selecting the best cruise outfits that blend fashion with functionality, ensuring you’re ready for every moment of your seafaring escapade.

Key Takeaways

  • Understand the cruise attire etiquette for daytime and evening wear to ensure you are appropriately dressed for each occasion.
  • When packing for a cruise, opt for versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched to maximize space in your suitcase.
  • Plan your outfits based on the duration of your cruise to ensure you have the right clothing for various activities and events.
  • Choose appropriate outfits for daytime activities such as exploring the ship and shore excursions to stay comfortable and stylish.
  • Dress accordingly for cruise evenings, with smart-casual options for casual dinners and formal attire for special events and theme nights.
  • Consider the weather and climate of your cruise destination when selecting clothing and accessories to stay comfortable and prepared for changing conditions.

Understanding Cruise Attire Etiquette

Daytime apparel.

When deciding on daytime attire for your cruise, opt for casual and comfortable pieces that are suitable for various activities on board. Light and breathable fabrics like cotton or linen are excellent choices to keep you cool in the daytime sun. A couple of casual outfits with mix-and-match options can be versatile for different daytime occasions. For example, pairing shorts or capris with blouses or polo shirts can create effortless daytime looks that are both practical and stylish. Don’t forget comfortable footwear like sandals or boat shoes to complete your daytime ensemble.

Evening Wear Guidelines

Evenings on a cruise often call for slightly dressier attire, depending on the designated dress code for the night. For formal evenings, consider elegant options such as cocktail dresses or dressy pantsuits for women and suits or dress shirts with trousers for men. Semi-formal nights might require smart-casual outfits like dressy skirts or slacks paired with blouses or button-down shirts. It’s essential to consult your cruise ship’s specific guidelines regarding evening dress codes to ensure you are appropriately attired for each night’s events. Remember to include accessories like scarves, jewelry, or ties to elevate your evening look.

How to Pack for a Cruise

Maximizing space and versatility.

When packing for a cruise, maximize your suitcase space by following a capsule wardrobe approach. Choose versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched to create a variety of outfits. Opt for items like a classic pair of dark wash jeans, a neutral skirt, or a white button-down shirt that can be dressed up or down as needed. By selecting dual-purpose clothing, you’ll have more outfit options while taking up less space in your luggage.

Considering Cruise Duration

Consider the duration of your cruise when planning your wardrobe. For a shorter cruise, focus on creating a few key outfits that can be worn multiple times with different accessories. On longer cruises, aim for a broader selection of clothing to keep your looks fresh throughout the trip. Think about the activities you’ll be engaging in each day and pack accordingly, ensuring you have appropriate attire for excursions, onboard events, and relaxation time. By planning ahead based on the length of your cruise, you’ll be prepared for any occasion that arises.

Outfits for Daytime Activities

When it comes to daytime activities on a cruise, dressing appropriately is key to ensure you are comfortable and stylish throughout the day. Here’s a breakdown of the ideal outfits for different experiences onboard and during shore excursions:

Exploring the Ship

As you set out to explore the various amenities and activities on the cruise ship, opt for casual yet functional attire. Consider wearing light and breathable clothing, such as a pair of shorts or a sundress matched with a comfortable t-shirt. Don’t forget to bring along a hat and sunglasses to shield yourself from the sun while out on the deck.

For footwear, a pair of comfortable walking shoes or sandals are essential to keep you comfortable as you move around the ship. Sneakers or flats are great options for exploring different decks and facilities onboard without worrying about discomfort or blisters.

Shore Excursions and Port Visits

When venturing out for shore excursions and port visits, it’s crucial to dress appropriately for the activities planned. If you’re going for a city tour or cultural visit, opt for smart casual attire, such as a pair of trousers or a skirt paired with a nice blouse or shirt. Comfortable walking shoes are a must to navigate through different terrains and explore historical sites or local markets.

For more adventurous excursions like hiking or water sports, make sure to pack activewear like moisture-wicking t-shirts, leggings, or shorts. Don’t forget to bring a light jacket or a windbreaker in case the weather changes unexpectedly.

By planning your outfits accordingly for daytime activities on a cruise, you can enjoy your adventures comfortably and in style, ready to make the most of every moment during your voyage.

Dressing for Cruise Evenings

When preparing your cruise wardrobe, evenings on board can offer a mix of casual and formal affairs. Below are some tips for navigating your evening attire seamlessly.

Casual Dinner Outfits

For casual dinner settings on your cruise, opt for smart-casual attire that strikes a balance between relaxed and stylish. Think of outfits that are comfortable yet slightly dressier than daytime wear.

  • Men could consider tailored trousers paired with a polo shirt or a button-down shirt. Women might choose a maxi skirt with a blouse or a nice top with trousers.
  • Practical Advice:
  • Mixing separates like blouses, skirts, or trousers can help create different looks without overpacking.
  • Addressing Questions:
  • What is smart-casual attire? It typically involves a blend of casual clothing with more formal pieces, suitable for dinner in a relaxed setting while maintaining a touch of sophistication.

Formal Night Attire

Formal nights on cruises call for elegant attire, often aligning with the ship’s dress code. These evenings provide an opportunity to dress up and enjoy a more upscale dining experience.

  • Men may opt for a suit or tuxedo, paired with a dress shirt and dress shoes. Women could choose a cocktail dress, gown, or evening pantsuit.
  • Check the cruise ship’s guidelines on formal attire to ensure you meet the required dress code.
  • What constitutes formal attire? Formal wear typically includes tailored suits or tuxedos for men and evening gowns or elegant cocktail dresses for women.

By planning your cruise evening outfits with consideration for both casual and formal options, you’ll be ready to enjoy the varied settings and dining experiences onboard.

Theme Nights and Special Event Outfits

What to wear for themed parties.

Theme nights on cruises are fun opportunities to dress up according to the party theme. You’ll want to pack some versatile pieces and accessories to create different looks for these special occasions. For a tropical or Hawaiian-themed party, colorful floral shirts or dresses paired with sandals can make you stand out. If the theme is 1920s Gatsby style, think about donning a glitzy dress or a sharp suit with a fedora to channel the timeless elegance of the era. Remember to check the cruise itinerary or event schedule in advance to prepare your outfits accordingly.

Dressing for Special Events on Board

Cruise ships often host special events like captain’s dinners or cocktail evenings that require specific attire. For formal night dinners, opt for an elegant evening gown or a tuxedo for a sophisticated look. Smart-casual events may call for a cocktail dress or a button-down shirt with dress pants. To add a touch of glam, accessorize with statement jewelry or a stylish tie. Planning ahead and packing the right outfits for these special events will ensure you’re dressed to impress and fully enjoy the onboard festivities.

Navigating Weather and Climate

Tropical cruise wardrobe essentials.

When preparing for a tropical cruise, lightweight and breathable clothing are key to staying comfortable in warm and humid climates. Opt for pieces made from cotton, linen, or moisture-wicking fabrics to help you stay cool and dry. Pack items like flowy sundresses, linen shorts, breathable tops, and swimwear for lounging by the pool or enjoying tropical beaches. Don’t forget to bring a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun’s rays. These essentials will keep you stylish and comfortable while exploring exotic island destinations.

Preparing for Cooler Destinations

For cruises to cooler destinations or during the evenings when temperatures drop, layering is essential to stay warm and stylish. Pack versatile pieces like cardigans, light jackets, scarves, and long pants that you can easily layer over your outfits. Opt for fabrics like wool or fleece for added warmth without bulk. A stylish trench coat or a cozy wrap can be perfect for cooler evenings onboard or during shore excursions in temperate ports. Be prepared for changing weather conditions by packing a mix of lightweight layers that you can easily add or remove as needed.

Top Accessories for Your Cruise Wardrobe

Footwear for Comfort and Style

When it comes to cruising, selecting the right footwear is key to enjoying your vacation comfortably. Opt for versatile shoes that can transition from day to night effortlessly. For daytime exploration and excursions, choose supportive sandals or sneakers that offer both comfort and style. These options will keep you comfortable while walking around the ship or exploring ports of call. In the evenings, consider packing a pair of elegant flats or dressy sandals to complement your evening outfits. This way, you can effortlessly switch from casual daytime activities to more formal evening events with the right footwear.

Essential Accessories for Day and Night

Accessories play a crucial role in elevating your cruise outfits from ordinary to exceptional. During the day, consider practical accessories like a wide-brimmed hat to protect you from the sun while lounging by the pool or exploring sunny destinations. A stylish pair of sunglasses is also a must to complete your daytime look while shielding your eyes from the glare.

For evening events, opt for elegant accessories that add a touch of glamour to your ensemble. A statement necklace or a pair of sparkling earrings can instantly elevate a simple dress for a formal night onboard. Remember to pack a versatile clutch or small evening bag to hold your essentials while adding sophistication to your evening attire.

By selecting the right footwear and essential accessories for day and night, you’ll be well-prepared to enjoy your cruise in style and comfort, no matter the occasion. Choose pieces that complement your outfits and enhance your overall look throughout your vacation.

You’ve now got a solid grasp on crafting the best outfits for your upcoming cruise! Remember, it’s all about versatility and comfort, ensuring you’re ready for any adventure that comes your way. From casual daytime looks to elegant evening ensembles, your wardrobe should be a perfect blend of style and practicality. 6 Essentials to Pack for a Winter Cruise

6 Essentials to Pack for a Winter Cruise

If you are planning on taking a winter cruise soon, consider these few essentials to pack that will make your trip more enjoyable

After the holidays as we fall back into our routines, it’s hard not to think about our next vacation, especially when the weather is cold and dreary. No wonder the winter months are a popular time to take a cruise. Many cruise lines offer discounts in the winter, and it is a great way to get away from the cold for a little while. We’ve rounded up a list of items that may not immediately come to mind when you’re putting together you’re packing list, but including them can make a world of difference when embarking on a winter cruise.

Appropriate Cruise Wear

If you are escaping the cold on a Caribbean cruise, don’t be overzealous about packing only bathing suits, shorts and tank tops. Breezy nights on the deck or on the beach still get quite chilly, not to mention the freezing air-conditioned rooms on board. CruiseCritic.com suggests packing appropriate cruise wear including a light sweater or pashmina that matches the outfits you brought. You can also use a pashmina as an extra blanket on board or on a long flight.

You should also check the ship’s dress code as well as your destination. You don’t want to miss out on a formal evening because you only packed shorts.

Laundry Supplies on a Cruise

Instead of taking up all the space in your luggage with outfits you might not wear, consider bringing travel-sized laundry detergent packets and a portable clothesline, so you can do laundry. One of CruiseSavvy.com’s cruise essentials is a plastic or cloth bag specifically for your dirty laundry, so it doesn’t get mixed with your clean clothes or make your room smell like wet bathing suits.

Power Strip and Adapter

According to Allianz Travel Insurance, many cruise cabins have only one or two outlets. If you and your travel companion bring your phone, tablet, Kindle, laptop, camera charger and other electronics, it can be a fight for the plug the whole trip. If you have the room in your luggage, bring a small power strip so you can plug in multiple items at once.

You should also consider bringing an adapter in case you have a three-pronged plug or encounter another reason your plug doesn’t fit the outlets.

Essential Replacements

It is inevitable that something important will get lost or broken while you’re on vacation, so bring some backups. Buying even simple items like batteries and pain relievers on board can quickly eat up your spending money that would be better spent on souvenirs.

For example, your sunglasses can easily get damaged if exposed to a lot of sand and saltwater. Instead of buying a new expensive pair of frames, companies like Revant Optics offer lens replacements for sunglasses you already have. An extra bathing suit is also a good idea, as well as extra flip flops, contact lenses and other essentials.

Thermal Bottle or Mug

Many travel sites suggest bringing a thermal mug on your winter cruise. It may seem nonessential, but you’ll be glad you brought one. As TravelSense.org states, many cruises offer only small coffee cups and not at all times of the day. This can be inconvenient when you want to walk around the ship with a hot cup of coffee or if you want coffee in your room.

A thermal bottle or mug will keep coffee or water hot for hours. You can even bring tea bags or Starbucks Via packets to mix with hot water in your room.

Over-the-Door Shoe Organizer

This may sound like an odd thing to pack when you want to keep it light, but space fills up fast in small cabins. Hanging a shoe organizer over your cabin door provides a place for small items such as batteries, phone chargers and toiletries. Plus, it organizes all your belongings in one out-of-the-way place.

What Luggage and Handbags to Bring for a European River Cruise

Luggage may seem like a no-brainer but one thing to consider on a boat is tightened spaces to deal with on board and in your sleeping cabin. It’s best to bring a lightweight, durable suitcase that is easy to store and has secure wheels that won’t roll off on you!

Conversely, a day bag that you’ll use for sightseeing should be sturdy and have good organizational ability. Generally, backpack or crossbody styles are most popular.

Since pickpockets are something to consider in Europe, having a bag with anti-theft features is a plus too! See what readers recommend for both luggage and a travel day bag!

Delsey Paris Chatelet 21” Hardside Carryon Suitcase With Brake

Luggage for a European River Cruise

Carryon suitcases are highly recommended for travel to Europe in general, and especially for a cruise down the European famous waterways. The overhead bins on airplanes to Europe tend to be a bit smaller, as will the ship’s storage space be when you get on board. Readers say smaller bags are much easier to maneuver through Europe’s tiny streets, staircases, elevators, and hotel rooms, too.

The Delsey Paris Chatelet 21” is a perfect little option for this type of travel. At 21”, it’s just small enough to be allowed on most planes to Europe, while providing a decent amount of packing space. This hardside version also comes with a brake too, so it won’t roll around on the ship!

Bagsmart Hanging Toiletry Bag

Final European River Cruise Tips

These last tips are really helpful to remember even the little things:

  • Many readers recommend a hanging toiletry bag for cruises. They’re easy to pack and don’t take up the entire bathroom counter, as counter space will be quite limited on board the cruise ship!
  • Another great storage tip a reader shared is to bring a shoe organizer to hang over a door, saying that it comes in handy for so many things, not just shoes. You can store bathroom items, sunscreens , medicine, accessories, and more! It’s a smart way to add extra storage place in small rooms.
  • Readers talk about the benefits of handwashing on board. While many cruise lines offer laundry services, a lot of TFGs find handwashing their clothes to be much more convenient. Find tips for washing clothes while traveling here !
  • For the hotter season, one reader recommends bringing a travel fan . Europe is known for not having air conditioning, so having a little portable fan to bring around with you while sightseeing is a wonderful way to cool off!

Just returned from my 2nd European river cruise—this time on the Rhine from Antwerp to Basel then a few days in Paris. Fabulous trip! One thing I’d like to add is don’t forget packing cubes, regardless of the season. I liked the compression cubes for underwear, socks, pajamas, scarves, etc.—items I didn’t worry about wrinkles. Non-compression cubes worked to keep other categories organized.
