Thomas and Uber Cup badminton: India’s Band of Brothers are back to defend historic World Team Championships title

Thomas cup 2024: even though defending the famous trophy will be daunting for india, the group that made history in 2022 are striking a defiant note..

After hitting the inside-out winner to the backhand side of Jonatan Christie, Srikanth Kidambi slammed his racket on the court so hard that it bounced back up like a rubber ball. He turned behind and celebrated, pointing to his teammates who soon mobbed him in the middle. A new World Champion was crowned, and India became only the sixth different country to lift the prestigious Thomas Cup since its inception in 1949.

In Chengdu, starting Saturday, the Band of Brothers that triumphed in Bangkok, will begin their campaign to defend that title. It is almost entirely the same set of players who are tasked with that challenge. The group believed they are capable of winning the title much before Bangkok 2022 as the now-famous Whatsapp group ‘It’s coming home!’ was created. A medal seemed possible from the word go, but they defied the odds to go all the way, blanking the most successful side in the history of the tournament in the final.

Now, as champions, they will have a target on their backs. Winning it once was a big deal, defending the title is going to be much tougher in what seems to be a very open race too. Hosts China will go all out, Indonesia will be raring to put 2022 behind them and have players hitting some terrific form, Denmark and Japan will fancy their chances too and watch out for Chinese Taipei, who are capable of doing what India did last time.

India will again be in the mix. Indian badminton found its love for team events at the last Thomas Cup and talent wise, there is no reason to put a repeat past them. Coach Vimal Kumar, who hailed it as the country’s greatest achievement, said that day it was “an achievement of pure team spirit which I havenโ€™t seen in the past.” India have boasted of some star singles players over the last two decades, but to come together in a team event like they did was a sensational achievement. Since then, there have been medals in other team events too like the Asian Games men’s team event and the Badminton Asia Team Championships.

While the personnel India will be employing over the next few days is simliar, the roles are likely to be rejigged. HS Prannoy’s presence as the third singles player was a crucial factor in Bangkok, but this time he is the top-ranked Indian singles player and will have to shoulder a different, tougher burden. If picked, he will play the opponent’s toughest players. While at his best, Prannoy can beat anyone in the world โ€“ even Viktor Axelsen, as he has shown in the last few years โ€“ his 2024 has been off to a rough start. With older health issues resurfacing, he hasn’t hit the highs of 2023, although the signs were good at the Asian Championships.

Lakshya Sen was flying high in 2022, but things have not been easy for him since. His Paris 2024 dreams looked distant at the start of this year, but the Almora kid climbed this hill in the nick of time, putting together crucial runs in Europe. In 2022, Srikanth Kidambi played arguably the best badminton of his career since the remarkable 2017 season, going undefeated in Bangkok. This time โ€“ if picked as the third singles player โ€“ he will have to overcome patchy form and step up under high pressure in deciding fifth matches. Priyanshu Rajawat was a rookie in Bangkok as he soaked in the experience, but is now more than a viable option for the third singles slot, should India seek to rotate.

Festive offer

In men’s doubles, MR Arjun and Dhruv Kapila’s fortunes nosedived post-2022 mostly due to injuries, but they have hit some good form recently.

The one thing that hasn’t changed, however, is the form of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, if anything they have gone on to become world-beaters. Currently world No 3, SatChi will have to spearhead India’s challenge as a bankable win in every tie they play.

India’s opponents in Group C will first be Kunlavut Vitidsarn-led Thailand. The world champion could well give his side a winning start but the depth on paper is much better for India, with Thailand not having their best second singles or main doubles options. England is next, and that should be winnable too. Then comes the grudge match against Indonesia, who have their main singles players Jonatan Christie and Anthony Ginting in great form, and despite their legendary doubles players missing, possess great depth there too.

Being played so close to Paris 2024, there is also the question of how much teams will push in Chengdu. Some teams have withdrawn, while others have not sent their full strength teams (like Indian women in the Uber Cup). But, Race to Paris now in the rearview mirror, India have made their intentions for Thomas Cup clear by opting for the big guns.

And at a team event, all it could take is a spark, leaning on teammates to overturn tough situations. The early signs are similar in Chengdu as in Bangkok, as the team has been projecting confidence and team spirit. “Rok sako toh rok lo,” seems to be the rallying cry. Even though defending the famous trophy will be daunting, the group that made history are striking a defiant note.

Exposure for young talent in Uber Cup

Indian women gained automatic qualification for the Uber Cup 2024 Finals after a sensational week at the Badminton Asia Team Championships in Malaysia earlier this year. A semifinal spot would have assured them their spot but they went the distance to clinch the title, overcoming a series of higher-ranked opponents. That title, albeit in a depleted field, was a shot in the arm for the women’s badminton contingent in the country, where the big wins have often come in individual tournaments. It marked PV Sindhu ’s comeback to action from an injury break, but was made memorable by Anmol Kharb’s incredible arrival on the big stage.

But in Chengdu, as Uber Cup gets underway on Saturday, India will unlikely build on that success in Shah Alam. A medal at the World Team Championships wouldn’t have been easy anyway, but it became improbable when Sindhu, Tanisha Crasto-Ashwini Ponnappa, Treesa Jolly-Gayatri Gopichand opted out.

“Sindhu informed the selectors that due to back-to-back tournaments leading up to the Olympics, she and her team have decided to skip the Uber Cup to prepare for the Olympics Top doubles pairs also cited similar reasons and, since it is not a full-strength team, they also pulled out. The selectors then decided to go ahead with young players who have done well recently at the National Championships,” BAI had said in a statement while announcing the squad.

And so the mercurial lefty Ashmita Chaliha will lead a young Indian team, that could still stand an outside chance at getting out of Group A in second place. China will be the overwhelming favourites in the group but against Canada and Singapore, India can’t be written off. The crucial tie would be the opener on Saturday against Michelle Li’s Canada.

National champion Anmol, who stole headlines at BATC, will get another chance to go toe-to-toe with some more higher-ranked opponents while Tanvi Sharma is another teenager to keep an eye out on. Shruti Mishra-Priya Konjengbam and Simran Singhi-Ritika Thaker will shoulder doubles responsibilities.

Thomas Cup squad:

(Singles) HS Prannoy, Lakshya Sen, Kidambi Srikanth, Priyanshu Rajawat and Kiran George

(Doubles) Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, Chirag Shetty, MR Arjun, Dhruv Kapila and Sai Pratheek

Uber Cup squad:

(Singles) Anmol Kharb, Tanvi Sharma, Ashmita Chaliha and Isharani Baruah

(Doubles) Shruti Mishra, Priya Konjengbam, Simran Singhi and Ritika Thaker

Indian men's team aim to defend Thomas Cup crown; young women's contingent will compete to script history in Uber Cup

C hengdu [China], April 26 (ANI): The historic 2022 Thomas Cup triumph remains one of the greatest achievements in Indian sporting history. The Indian men's badminton team , who entered the competition as the underdogs, pulled off an upset to win the men's World Championships for the first time.

Considered the 'World Cup' of badminton, this competition will not directly impact the forthcoming Olympics in Paris, but it would be interesting to see how India's top badminton players perform under duress.

Memories abound of HS Prannoy 's heroics in the pivotal quarter-final and semi-final ties, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty 's consistency, a young Lakshya Sen rising to the occasion, Kidambi Srikanth's iconic jump smash to cap off India's victory against Jonathan Christie, and the post-match celebrations are still fresh in peoples mind.

India's men are the reigning Thomas Cup champions and have sent a formidable team, but PV Sindhu and the top doubles pairs have opted out, leaving the women's Uber Cup team with little experience.

The Indian squad is set to defend the championship that they won in May 2022, which revolutionized men's badminton in India. India entered the competition as huge underdogs, yet they won it all by pulling off upset after upset.

But India could not have chosen a more difficult draw for their title defence, as they are in the group with 14-time world champions Indonesia and Thailand, which includes the current men's singles world champion Kunlavut Vitidsarn, and England, who are capable of causing their own upsets. As Group C's top two players go to the semifinals, India will have their work cut out for them as they take on Thailand on Saturday.

India's men's badminton players have improved in team competitions, and their victory in the 2022 Thomas Cup served as a platform for further success. Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty have already declared that a medal in the 2024 edition is a goal, and they frequently credit their recent string of historic successes to their Thomas Cup victory.

When the 2024 Thomas Cup gets underway in Chengdu, China, Prannoy will need to perform at the peak of his game. However, he has had a difficult season thus far, losing five of the six BWF World Tour events in the first round.

Sen, on the other hand, had a forgetful 2023 and a sluggish start to 2024 that saw him lose as many as ten tournaments. He has only recently found his form again, with strong performances at the French Open Super 750 and the All England Open Super 1000 in the last two months.

Once again, Srikanth is not competing in the Olympics. In the last tournament, he went undefeated in six bouts. Over the past few seasons, the former world number one has had difficulty maintaining consistency on the World Tour circuit.

Unlike the Thomas Cup, little is expected of the Uber Cup contingent because India is fielding an inexperienced side with PV Sindhu and the top two doubles couples opting out.

Sindhu, who spent all four weeks of March on the European tour, has decided to skip this one to focus on her Olympic preparations. Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Crasto, who qualified for Paris in the final feasible event, are also out. Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly, who did not make it to Paris, will also be missing.

On the other hand, India have fielded a young squad that features 17-year-old national champion Anmol Kharb, Ashmita Chaliha and Tanvi Sharma. The Indian women's team is drawn in Group A where they will face hosts China, Canada and Singapore. India will begin their Uber Cup 2024 campaign against Canada on Saturday. (ANI)

Indian men begin Thomas Cup title defence, women look to shine in Uber Cup

India begin their thomas and uber cup journey on saturday, 27 april. while the men take on thailand in their first group stage match, the women play canada. the men's team will aim for consistency in title defence..

Listen to Story

Lakshya Sen

  • India begin their Thomas and Uber Cup campaign on 27 April
  • Indian men's team have a tough group stage
  • India men's team is the defending their title

Star singles players will aim for a consistent run as Indian men embark on a tough journey of defending their title at the Thomas Cup, while a young women's team, sans the peerless P V Sindhu, will look to punch above its weight when it begins its campaign in Uber Cup here on Saturday.

Just two years ago, India had sent shockwaves across the badminton world when they clinched their maiden Thomas Cup crown, considered the team world championship for men.

Without the burden of expectations, India went on to dismantle the world's best teams to script an unprecedented chapter in the history of the sport, and now they return to the 33rd edition with the arduous task of once again showing their might against the top echelons of the sport.

However, the underdog tag won't be there this time. In fact, all the teams will be gunning for the defending champions, who have retained the core of the 2022 side which had made history in Bangkok.

India will count on the experience of last edition as they have been put in the 'Group of Death', featuring multiple-time winners Indonesia, Thailand and England in Group C.

Indian men will begin their campaign against Thailand, who boost of reigning world champion Kunlavut Vitidsarn and young Panitchaphon Teeraratsakul.

But the most formidable will be third-seeded Indonesia, who have the likes of Jonatan Christie and Anthony Ginting -- the two played the finals of All England in March --, and world No. 7 pair of Muhammad Rian Ardianto and Fajar Alfian.

"It will be tough this year. Based on current form, there are lots of teams with three strong singles and two doubles (players) like China, Denmark, Chinese Taipei, Japan, and Indonesia," HS Prannoy told PTI.

A lot can happen in two years' time and none of the Indian players coming to China this week are the same.

Prannoy, who had delivered the goods under pressure in the deciding fifth singles, is coming into the tournament after struggling in the first half of the season, owing to a chronic stomach disorder which returned after troubling him in the past.

His 90-minute marathon battle en route to a morale-boosting win over China's Lu Guang Zu, however, showed he is close to recovery and will carry the onus of giving the team a good start as he is the top-ranked singles player at world No. 9 now.

Lakshya Sen has found his mojo just in time with successive semifinal finishes at the French Open and the All England Championships after enduring a difficult 2023 and early 2024.

Kidambi Srikanth, who had won all six matches in 2022, has blown hot and cold in the last two years. He also endured tough losses in the team championships final at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and 2023 Asian Games.

Another player who could be entrusted with the third singles is young Priyanshu Rajawat, who was part the team which won the epic title in Bangkok, and since then has gone on to claim his maiden Super 300 title last year in Orleans.

While the rest had an inconsistent run, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty have looked unstoppable and are coming into the prestigious event with four straight finals on the World Tour. The duo will be the spearhead of India's campaign.

Dhruv Kapila and Arjun MR, who will play the second doubles, have weaved a few title wins at the Uganda International Challenge and Orlen Polish Open, besides signing off with a quarterfinal finish at the Spain Masters in March.

"As a team we have evolved in the last 2-3 years. Everybody has been able to keep aside their individual problems for a one-week time and has been able to push through emotional challenges in a much better way during the team events," Prannoy said.

It is likely that Prannoy and Srikanth could be rotated during the event, putting the onus more on Sen and Rajawat to deliver. There is also Kiran George, who has been in decent touch.

In Uber Cup, Ashmita Chaliha will lead a young Indian team with all the big guns skipping the tournament after competing in a series of tournaments to qualify for the Paris Olympics.

The greenhorns will look to test their mental and physical fortitude against the top international players when they open their campaign against Canada in Group A.

Top seeds and multiple-time winners China and Singapore are also in their group, making it improbable for the young women's team to go past the group stage.

Besides Ashmita, national champion Anmol Kharb, who was the star performer for India en route their maiden Asia Team Championships title, will also look to test their wares as will Isharani Baruah and 15-year-old Tanvi Sharma.
