Because of Their Beef Ration?

One popular theory is that the term "Beefeater" originated from the daily allowance of beef given to the Yeomen Warders as part of their pay. In the past, beef was a valuable and relatively expensive commodity, so being given a daily ration of beef was considered a significant perk and an indication of a well-paid position.

Because "Buffetier," in French, Means "Guard?"

Another theory suggests that the name "Beefeater" is a corruption or adaptation of the French word " buffetier ." In the medieval period, French was widely used in the English court and among the nobility. Buffetiers were individuals responsible for guarding the king's food and beverages, so the term might have been transferred to the Yeomen Warders due to their role in guarding the Tower.

Some historians believe that the distinctive and somewhat elaborate uniform of the Yeomen Warders, with its red tunics and ruffled collars, resembled the serving attire worn by royal palace staff, which included servers and attendants. The Ceremony of the Keys

The Ceremony of the Keys is a centuries-old and world-famous nightly ritual performed without fail for generations by the Yeoman Warders and Guards of the Tower of London. This ceremony of 'locking up' symbolizes their unwavering commitment to safeguarding the Tower's secrets.

Shortly before the ceremony begins, the Chief Yeoman Warder, who holds the highest position among the Yeoman Warders (commonly known as Beefeaters), gathers a select group of Beefeaters responsible for conducting the ceremony. The ceremony occurs every night at precisely 9:53 PM. The Chief Yeoman Warder, carrying a lantern and the keys to the various gates and doors within the Tower complex, proceeds to the Byward Tower. There, an armed detachment of the Tower Guard, led by an officer, accompanies him to the main entrance of the Tower.

As the Chief Yeoman Warder and his armed escort approach the main gate, a sentry on duty challenges them, asking, "Halt! Who comes there?" The Chief Yeoman Warder replies with "The keys," and the sentry questions, "Whose keys?" The response is (always) "Queen Elizabeth's keys." The sentry then grants the Chief Yeoman Warder and his escort permission to enter the Tower grounds. The Chief Yeoman Warder then symbolically secures the Tower for the night by locking the outer gates and the Middle and Byward Towers before heading to the Traitors' Gate.

After securing the last gate, the Chief Yeoman Warder and the armed escort make their way back to the inner ward of the Tower. A bugler plays the Last Post, marking the end of the ceremony. The armed escort and Chief Yeoman Warder then retire for the night, ensuring the Tower is securely locked.

The ceremony is a simple yet meaningful event that emphasizes the tradition, continuity, and security of the Tower. It symbolizes the enduring presence of the Crown within the historic walls and ensures that the Tower remains a sacred and secure place. The phrase "Queen Elizabeth's keys" is used, regardless of the reigning monarch's actual name, to maintain the timeless nature of the tradition. This ceremony has been performed practically without fail for centuries, even during times of war, and has become an integral part of the Tower's history and heritage.

Since the 15th century, the Beefeaters have helped guard the throne's interests after fighting in the Battle of Bosworth that shifted power to the Tudors. You've probably seen them walking behind coronation and ceremonial carriages carrying those big pikes.

On this tour, you'll have an exclusive, private 15 minutes with one of them inside a room at the Bloody Tower. You'll be highly entertained by their storytelling and jokes that will bring the importance of the Tower of London to life. Becoming a Beefeater is a coveted position that only those with at least 20 years in prior military service can apply for. If you're lucky, the Beefeater you speak with might even live onsite at the Tower, which is still considered an active palace today.

Since the line to get into the crown jewels can get long, your guide will likely lead you to the Jewel House entrance after your meeting with the Beefeater. Britain’s crown jewels are a priceless collection of some 140 royal items with over 23,000 precious stones, including the elaborate coronation regalia of the English monarchy.

Very informative tour with THE BEST GUIDE

Our meet & greet with a Beefeater was so much fun! Our guide, Ben, was friendly, knowledgeable & very personable. We met him prior to the opening of the Tower & he was able to give us some background information about the tour & the Tower prior to our entry. The queue was fast & easy. We then met Dan, one of the Beefeaters who then gave us background information about their role @ the castle. Next, we were able to ask questions along with each of us taking photos with him. Ben then brought us to the Crown Jewels Tower & again gave background information & were 1 of the first to see the jewels that day. Throughout the tour Ben was engaging, friendly & a wealth of knowledge. He even followed up with me after the tour to answer a question. I would highly recommend this tour! Ben made this day so memorable-thanks Ben😀

I understood this Tour would be with a Beefeater ,as advertised :Exclusive Meet and Greet Tour with the Tower of London Beefeaters: This Did not happen What actually hapenned was Met by a guide ,Then a Beefeater we met with ie greet and a talk for 15 minutes .Then taken around by a guide of which we had to leave early as it over ran. The reason we purchased this was believing a Beefeater would I fact do the Tour Extremely dissapointing and would not recommend as it Advertises and reads totally different to what we experienced

Tower of London History With the Chief Yeoman Warder

Colloquially known as Beefeaters, Yeoman Warders are responsible for safeguarding the Tower of London, its Crown Jewels, its ravens – and its history. Chief Yeoman Warder Peter McGowran talks about some of his favourite parts of caring for England’s most infamous former prison.

Sandwiched between the crush of city traffic and the River Thames, the Tower of London is one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks. It has witnessed nearly 1,000 years of the UK capital’s history since it was first built by William the Conqueror in 1078.

Within its walls reside the Yeoman Warders , commonly known as Beefeaters, who regale tourists with the incredible – and often bloody – tales of the Tower’s past.

What are Beefeaters?

The official title of the Tower of London’s watchmen is Yeoman Warders of Her Majesty’s Royal Palace and Fortress the Tower of London, and Members of the Sovereign’s Body Guard of the Yeoman Guard Extraordinary. However, they usually refer to themselves more simply as Yeoman Warders.

“No one really knows where the name ‘Beefeater’ comes from,” says Chief Yeoman Warder Peter McGowran. “There’s loads of stories, but the majority of us think it comes from when we used to get paid with rations of food.”

Individuals can only qualify for the position of Yeoman Warder once they have served 22 years in the armed forces, reached the rank of Sergeant Major (or its equivalent) and received the Long Service and Good Conduct Medals.

“And if you get the job, you have to live here with your family. No ifs, ands or buts about it,” says McGowran, who has lived at the Tower for 10 years.

What is history of the Tower of London?

The Chief Warder doesn’t seem to mind his living arrangement, calling the Tower “a tiny village”. His passion is evident as he effortlessly recalls some of the site’s uses over the past millennium.

“It has been home to the Crown Jewels since 1303, the Royal Mint until 1810 and the Royal Observatory until it moved to Greenwich in the 17th century,” he explains. “It was an armoury, and royal records were stored here until the Public Records Office was created in the 1800s. It was also the Royal Menagerie. People are completely baffled by that last bit. Sometimes heads of state would give animals as gifts to our kings and queens and they ended up at the Tower until the late 1830s when they were moved to a strip of grass called Regent’s Park.”

Today, wire sculptures depicting animals that once called the Tower home can be seen around the grounds. They were designed by British wildlife sculptor Kendra Haste.

Why are there ravens?

There is one animal that will always receive royal treatment at the Tower: the raven . Legend has it that, if the ravens leave the Tower, it will mean an end for the British monarchy .

“King Charles II declared in a royal decree that there should always be six ravens at the Tower, but we always have one or two spare, just in case,” says McGowran of his feathered neighbours.

One raven, called Merlina , is sure never to leave her post. “We’re in a bit of a love affair; she still follows me around,” says McGowran, who used to assist the Yeoman Ravenmaster.

Tower Green

Merlina’s favourite perch overlooks Tower Green, a green space spliced with gravelled visitor paths and home to a small garden inspired by the one that famous prisoner Sir Walter Raleigh developed during his internment. “He was kept here for about 13 years on three occasions for various reasons. You don’t marry the Queen’s best friend and not tell her about it – he was a bit of a boyo,” McGowran laughs.

At Tower Green’s centre rests a memorial to the building’s darker history. The tribute “stands approximately where the scaffolds were, inscribed with the names of those executed by block and axe within the Tower walls – or, if you were Anne Boleyn, double-handed sword,” McGowran explains. “She actually asked to be executed with a sword because she knew the axe usually missed.”

McGowran continues: “There were about half a dozen private executions done behind the walls, but up to 1,000 prisoners were publicly executed on Tower Hill.”

Why were some executions held publicly while others were private? “It was a matter of respect,” says McGowran. High-status prisoners such as queens Anne Boleyn, Catherine Howard and Lady Jane Grey were among the dozen or so spared the indignity of dying as part of a public spectacle.

The Bell Tower and St Thomas More’s cell

Before it was a prison, the Tower of London was a place where royalty lived and held court. However, it was soon realised that the White Tower’s robust construction made it the perfect place to confine prisoners.

The Bell Tower is McGowran’s favourite spot on the grounds. “It contains the oldest surviving bell in the city of London and it’s the strongest of the 13 towers on the inner wall. It’s just massive – 20 feet of concrete below ground, and 10 feet of solid concrete under the ground floor,” he explains.

It is also the place that St Thomas More was imprisoned for 15 months before his execution.

“He was a great adviser to Henry VIII but, as a Roman Catholic, More objected to Henry’s divorce and got thrown in jail. Henry VIII thought he could sway More, but as time got on, there was no bending him, and More was made an example of on 6 July 1535,” says McGowran.

More was canonised as a martyr by Pope Pius XI in 1935, and his cell is a pilgrimage site for Catholics, but access is limited. McGowran explains: “We would love for everyone to see Thomas More’s cell – we love showing off our history – but it’s just too delicate inside.”

More’s Catholicism was once practised at the Tower’s Chapel Royal of St Peter in Chains when it was built in 1520, but after Henry VIII declared himself head of the Church of England in 1533, it became Anglican.

The Tower’s 3 million yearly visitors can see inside the chapel, but usually only on a tour guided by a Yeoman Warder.

The chapel is also the Yeoman Warders’ parish church, meaning it holds both historical and personal significance for McGowran. The Chief Warder’s daughter and son both held their weddings in this chapel, and his grandchildren were baptised here.

Until 1857, prisoners who met their end within the Tower walls and on Tower Hill were buried under the chapel floor. But, as McGowran explains, “Queen Victoria was not happy that all those bodies were under the floor, so she ordered to exhume and put them into caskets.” A plaque with the names of the deceased rests on a chapel wall, in front of the place where the bodies are now interred in a crypt.

Inside the Tower’s crypt lie more pieces of the Tower’s history, including a record of the births, deaths and marriages of people involved with the Tower of London dating back to the 16th century.

McGowran knows this side of the chapel well: “I used to be the chapel archivist and families all over the world get in contact for information about ancestors at the Tower. I had to learn Old English to find some of it,” he says.

The crypt, like More’s cell, is kept out of sight from the general public. “This is one of the oldest parts of the Tower. It’s a really protected space. For a while you couldn’t make more than a pin-hole in the walls,” says McGowran. Luckily, some restrictions have been lifted, meaning McGowran and his colleagues could mount plaques honouring people who lived at the Tower, voluntarily or otherwise.

If you rent the Audio Guide is the Yeoman Warder Tour redundant - do you do both or do they overlap in information? Perhaps they complement each other? I've heard both are good but are unclear if BOTH should be done on the same visit.

I think the Yeoman Warder Tour is best, and it's included in the admission.

It could be worth getting both. The audio guide covers some things that you may not hear about on a tour, but then you can ask questions and engage with a yeoman warder and you can't with an audio guide.

It might be a bit too much information though. It depends on your level of interest I guess.

I'd add that it also depends on how long you intend to stay there. I only did the tour when I visited. I think I stayed for 3 hours or just under that. I liked the tour a lot; I still have some vivid memories from it. To me, the tour is a must. That said, there's *so much* to see there, and the tour, out of necessity, doesn't visit everything. So if you plan on checking things out after the tour, the audio guide would be great if you're a history fan and like detailed info. I didn't get the audio guide only bc by that point, I was ready to head out. The grounds were getting more crowded than I like, so that's why I left. Based on interest alone, I probably could've stayed at least an hour longer than I did and I would've liked having the audio guide.

You could easily do both. The Yeoman Warder tour is great, but only takes you around the outsides of the buildings and towers (except for the chapel, where the tour ends and you can only enter on the tour.) There are too many people on the tours to try to get into the buildings and towers. You will need to do those on your own, with or without the audio tour. You would get more out of it with the audio tour.

We did both and they were awesome. We ended up staying all day and the audio tours covered inside where the Yeoman’s tour didn’t.

I agree with 'both'. The Yeoman Warder tour is very good, but heavy on showmanship, sensationalism, jokes and stories. The audio guide then supplements that with details and facts.

Yeoman Warders (nicknamed 'Beefeaters') have guarded the Tower of London for more than 500 years. They trace their origins back to 1485, when Henry VII founded the Yeoman of the Guard.

King Henry VIII appointed several of these Yeomen to serve at the Tower of London, where they were paid 6 pence a day.  These men were often known as 'the Yeoman at the Tower'.

Yeoman Warders have welcomed paying visitors to the Tower since the 1500s.  Over the following centuries, the Yeoman Warders became an important part of the visitor experience at the Tower.

In 1826, Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, became the Constable of the Tower of London. He was not impressed with the Yeoman body which was then recruited from all walks of life. 

Wellington declared that Yeoman Warders would now only be recruited from ex-serviceman with long service and good records of conduct.

Today's Yeoman Warders have served at least 22 years of military service. Each has reached the rank of warrant officer and been awarded the long service and good conduct medal.  

Yeoman Warders are now recruited from all three branches of the armed forces: The Royal Navy including The Royal Marines, The British Army, and The Royal Air Force.

The Yeoman Warder's dark blue and red uniform, known as 'Blue Undress', was introduced in 1850. Queen Victoria herself influenced the design of the durable new everyday uniform.

On special occasions, Yeoman Warders wear the red and gold 'State dress' uniform.  It is thought to date to 1550.

Yeoman Warders continue to play a significant role in royal and state ceremonial occasions and are symbols of our national heritage.

Ceremony of the Keys

The Yeoman Warders are the guardians of many ancient ceremonies. The Ceremony of the Keys has taken place every night for more than 700 years to lock up the Tower.  

The Ceremony begins when the sentry cries out,  "Halt, who comes there?"   The Chief Yeoman Warder replies, "The Keys."  They are questioned: "Whose keys?"  and answer "King Charles's  Keys."  The sentry answers: "Pass King Charles's Keys, all is well."

The Constable's Dues

In the past, every ship that entered the City of London had to give a portion of their cargo to the Constable of the Tower. This was known as 'The Constable's Dues'.

When a Royal Navy vessel moors at the Wharf today it still presents a barrel of wine, rum, or brandy to the Constable. The 'Constable's Dues' are escorted by the Yeoman Warders.

No visit to the Tower of London would be complete without seeing a "Beefeater", officially known as a Yeoman Warder of His Majesty’s Royal Palace and Fortress the Tower of London, Member of the Sovereign’s Body Guard of the Yeoman Guard Extraordinary.

The Beefeaters are often confused with ‘Yeomen of the Guard', a distinctly different corps of Royal Bodyguards.

Becoming a Yeoman Warder is not easy. At present, there are 37 Yeomen Warders at the Tower of London.

A candidate must have at least 22 years of service in the Armed Forces.

In addition to the length of service, all Yeomen Warders must also have been awarded the ‘Long Service and Good Conduct’ medal during their time in the armed forces.

WHY ARE THEY CALLED BEEFEATERS

Nobody knows for sure.

The most popular speculation is that the term originated from the fact that the Yeomen of the Guard were allowed to eat as much beef as they liked from the King’s table.

‘Beefeater’ eventually became a term used to distinguish between the Body Guard at the Tower of London, and the Royal Bodyguards working in other locations.

Yeomen Warders have been in service at the Tower of London since 1485 when the corps were formed by King Henry VII, although their origins date back even further.

Traditionally Beefeaters had been men. But Moira Cameron of Argyll, Scotland made history when she became the first female Yeoman Warder ever in 2007.

Today, there are three women on the team!

The job of Beefeater has its’ perks, of course; Yeomen Warders have the unique privilege of being able to live in the Tower!

A portion of their salaries is given over as rent and many of the apartments in the Tower date from the 13 th century.

Although an interesting place to live, the wife of one Beefeater says it’s impossible to order a pizza to be delivered to the Tower because nobody ever believes that is where they live!

We tend to enjoy small group tours for the ease of maneuvering through crowded attractions and the more tailored and informative experience. My question....would small group guided tour for Tower of London, Westminster Abbey, St. Paul's Cathedral. Churchill War Rooms be worthy of paying the extra cost for a tour? We will be visiting most of these places during the first week of May... Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. I think St. Pauls is on our itinerary for Saturday. Londdon Walks is an option I see frequently on this forum, however, the times don't add up with our itinerary and we will only be in London for 4 full days. Thank you. Sharon

We found the audio guides for St. Paul’s and Westminster to be fabulous. We had tried a Walks of London tour of Westminster but it was so crowded in the cathedral and the WoL group was so large, we missed a lot, so on a return trip, we went on our own and enjoyed it much more. The audio guides are at extra cost but far less than a tour and well worth it.

The Churchill War Rooms has an excellent included-in-the-price audio guide. Go at your own pace as you’ll linger more in some places than others.

We took the Warder’s tour at The Tower of London and it was a very large group but the tour guide managed it quite well. We had great weather, which helped as it is almost all outdoors. You’ll need to take time on your own for some areas like the Crown Jewels.

We aslo just used the audioguides at these sights. I felt it was sufficient information for us, but if you are the Type who likes to ask questions, a tour might be for you. Just keep near the front, don’t lag behind.

All the major European cities have Free Walking Tours where the tour guides work for tips. They're listed online. We always take them. Many cities require tour guides be certified/licensed and they're always excellent.

Then they'll have a Nightlife Tour where they take you around to bars and clubs--showing you the real city. They often include reasonably priced good restaurants. We always sign up for that one. The people you meet are from all over the world, and let me just say they're "very fun and full of life."

An audio guide was included in our admission at Westminster Abbey earlier this month, and it was helpful, but my first one had bad, screeching, crackling feedback that was popping in my ears. I was able to work my way back through the crowd to the desk for a replacement that worked. But it was in Japanese at first, and it wasn’t immediately obvious how to switch it to English.

As mentioned, it was crowded - more than the Tube at rush hour. And the flow of visitors was pretty much a one-way route, from Point A to Point B and so on. The only restrooms are a long way through the cloister, if needed. A private guide might help get to specific locations quicker, or skip things to get to more significant locations, but the crowd when we were there might make that less possible. Just getting the audio guide (and having Rick’s London guidebook) and joining the crowd worked.

Rick’s London book tour was helpful at St. Paul’s. He also has his own recorded audio tour on his Website, but it didn’t get used. We also didn’t use the church’s audio guide, or a private guide.

At the Tower, we experienced a big group for the Yeoman Warden Beefeater’s tour, which lasted about an hour, outside. He mentioned to be sure and go inside the White Tower afterwards - “THAT is the Tower of London, what you’ve all paid to see, so go see it.” A private guide could maybe make things more efficient, but starting off with the Beefeater tour that was provided, followed by Crown Jewels (did I mention crowded?) and the White Tower (not as crowded) on our own worked well, at no additional charge.

St Pauls Cathedral has special - completely free beyond your normal admission charge - trained guides who take you in small or very small groups to parts of the Cathedral not normally visited. We have done that and really enjoyed it. It was just the two of us and her. Absolutely wonderful.

The Yeoman Warders' (Beefeater) tour at the Tower of London goes to all the major points, in a logical order, and most of the Yeoman Warders have a keen sense of humour. They are chosen from career military. Basic requirements to qualify as a Yeoman Warder any candidate must have served for at least 22 years in the armed forces, be a former warrant officer or senior non commissioned, plus hold the Long Service and Good Conduct medal.

They know what they are doing and have an intimate knowledge of the history of the Tower and the military.

I don't think that most garden variety tour guides come close, actually.

In 2018 my daughters and I did a London Walks tour of Westminster Abbey. The guide was wonderful but the Abbey was so crowded it was hard to enjoy the tour.

I went to the Abbey last year on my own. Got an early ticket and was one of the first to enter the Abbey. The side chapels were almost empty, some were totally empty. It was wonderful. I signed up for a Verger tour which was also wonderful. This visit was the highlight of my trip last year, and I'm doing it again in May (I will visit Westminster Abbey every time I visit London!)

If it's available, I strongly recommend the Westminster Abbey Hidden Highlights tour. It's a small group and takes you to areas you can't access otherwise - plus you get to go inside the room that holds the Coronation Chair and see it up close.

Thank you all very much for replying!! We will go with the audio and other options provided by the various venues we visit. The Westminster Abbey Hidden Highlights tour sounds great for a minimal extra fee but it is all sold out for the days we will be in London. Darn!!

Sharon, sign up for a Verger tour when you get into the Abbey. I don't think you can sign up in advance. It's a great way to see the Abbey. I did a Verger tour and I can't recommend it enough. And you get to see the tomb of St. Edward the Confessor, which you can't do without the tour.

I think Rick's recommendation for the Tower of London is to be there when it opens (probably a bit earlier would be smart so you'd be near the front of the line) and go first to see the crown jewels when that area isn't crowded. Then he suggests the Beefeater tour.

The general recommendation from locals for the Tower is slightly different. Turn up 10 minutes or so after the opening time, when the initial queue of those who come early has dissipated- you will get tickets in minutes. Then go straight to the Crown Jewels and come back for the beefeater tour.

8 Essential Tips for Visiting the Tower of London

“Mighty Fortress. Royal Palace. Infamous Prison.” The Tower of London is a UNESCO heritage site and is one of the most popular sites in London for good reason. The Tower was the setting for some of the most captivating stories in British history. Even those allergic to history will be drawn to the treason and rebellion, to the love and betrayal (or at the very least the Crown Jewels!) These essential tips for visiting the Tower of London will help you see the best sites, know what you’re seeing, and avoid the most lines.

Buy Your Tickets Ahead of Time

You do not want to show up at the Tower without tickets. Waiting in the long lines to buy tickets while looking at the next loooooonnng line to get in can be very disheartening. Buy direct from Historic Royal Palaces to get the best price and skip the first set of lines. Do NOT trust other unofficial ticket packages, like London Pass, to let you skip the lines. Some do, some don’t, and it can depend on the day in my experience. No risk, buy direct at least one day before.

Get to the Tower Early

We showed up 30 minutes before it opened on a Saturday and the line stretched half-way around one wall. Fifteen minutes later the line was out of sight. The line moves fairly fast once it opens, but you don’t want to be at the end of it.

Other tips for visiting the Tower of London: avoid the weekends if you can. Mid-week days have the least traffic. Go early or show up near the end of the day (warning though, the Tower has a lot to see.) There’s also a rumor that sometimes they will start letting the early birds in before official hours. If you’re visiting on Fri-Sun, you’ll probably need to arrive 40 min early to be at the front of the line.

Go DIRECTLY to the Crown Jewels

I cannot stress this enough. The Tower is actually a large complex, with palaces and prisons behind layers of fortress. There will be many interesting things on the way to the entrance to the Crown Jewels. Do not be deterred. Keep going straight there; the Crown Jewels will be the longest line inside.

We arrived 30 minutes before opening and were inside about 15 minutes after opening. Straight to the Crown Jewels and no outside line; we walked in and went through two decorative waiting rooms before we first had a to wait. From there the line flowed fairly quickly, and we saw the sumptuous treasures of the Crown(on a moving walkway to prevent gawkers blocking things.) By the time we left the exhibit, about an hour after opening, the line to the jewels was out the door and snaking upon itself several times. Within 15 more minutes we looked down on the line from the historic White Tower and the line folded upon itself 7 times. In summary, arrive early and go straight to the Crown Jewels. Everything else was easy to see, even when we doubled all the way back to the start to join the Yeoman tour.

Take a (FREE) Yeoman Tour

One of the best things about visiting the Tower of London is those sharp looking guards in the Yeoman, or the Beefeaters, have been guarding the Tower since the Tudors. They need at least 22 years of distinguished military service to be in the elite guard and, if our Yeoman guide was to be believed, they also need to have fantastic beards (his certainly was.)

Amongst their guard duties, many also provide daily tours and greetings. Tours are held every 30 minutes and anyone who wants to join gathers in the moat area on the other side of the entrance. This is an entertaining and dramatic tour around the outside areas, ending near the execution Tower Green. Watch out for a tall Yeoman with a fab beard and curling mustache; he is hilarious.

Know Some of its Harsh History Before You Go

If you visit the Tower without knowing anything about it, without a Yeoman or an audio guide, it will be a moderately interesting group of stone buildings and scattered armor displays. Grab an audio guide or a tour and the drama starts to set in. Know more about the cast of characters behind the drama, and etchings on the walls and that space under the stairs start to take on a new life.

Three Queens of England were beheaded here. Several royal cousins also perished in the Tower, either in their prison rooms or on the block. One King likely suffocated the King he usurped. A future King and his brother disappeared after their uncle took the crown. One royal York brother supposedly chose to be drowned in wine for his treasonous sentence . Treasured royal friends and aides (including a future saint) left their prison cell and for the public block. One future Queen, imprisoned several times for treason scandals, survived the Traitors’ Gate to become one of the most famous British Queens. Read up on the must see stories and spots and the Tower becomes as interesting as Game of Thrones (which of course borrowed heavily from this phase of English history.)

Wander the Walls

Many miss this when visiting the Tower of London. There are several layers of walls around the Tower: what used to be the moat wall, the outer fortress wall, and the inner wall. This was after all not just a palace, but a fortress. Many monarchs took refuge during revolts in the impenetrable Tower and many prisoners that went in didn’t come out. These days the walls afford picturesque views and a bit of peace and quiet from the crowds. Wander around and soak it in.

Take an After-Hours Tour

For a more intimate look, take the Twilight Tour . The crowds are gone and you have a smaller group tour with a Yeoman, hearing more of the stories and scandals behind the Tower. These are 7pm tours offered on select Sundays November- April. Keep in mind, this tour does not include the Crown Jewels or anything inside the towers. Visit at the end of the day, see these pieces, and then join your restricted tour.

Getting to the Tower

The Tower of London is in the original City of London, right next to the famous Tower Bridge (which many of us Americans think is the London Bridge.) There is a handy Tube stop right next to the Tower (the aptly named Tower Hill stop). The Thames Clipper ferry also has a stop at the foot of the tower. Either of these is the smartest way to get there. That famous bridge, and it’s two story viewing platform, is just a short walk away.

Visiting the Tower is a rite of passage to London. Go early, see the jewels, grab a Yeoman, and find the dark corners of royal Britain.
