Once you child has participated on a house team after a year or more, he or she may have the opportunity to play travel hockey .  Many programs begin travel hockey at mite level (ages 7-8).  Travel hockey in the United States is commonly referred to as Tier 2, A, or AA Hockey.  It's ultimately the first taste of competitive hockey that your child will likely see.

Most coaches will give you an indication during the mini-mite or mite level that your child has the ability to play travel hockey.  Even if they don't have the ability to move up to travel hockey, there is nothing wrong with your child continuing to play hockey in the house leagues if that is truly what they enjoy.  Again, they are still kids and playing with their friends could be all they care about, and they could care less about playing against better competition.

Travel hockey is a more significant commitment than house hockey.  It's a greater time commitment , it's a greater financial commitment , and it's a greater physical commitment .  If you feel your child is talented enough to play travel hockey, then it doesn't hurt to tryout if that's what your child wants to do.  All kids can typically tryout for travel hockey and there is usually a small fee to tryout, but many programs refund this fee if your child doesn't make the team.  Most larger programs have several kids tryout while smaller programs may not hold tryouts at all.

Time Commitment

Most travel hockey programs hold two practices a week.  By comparison, most house programs only hold one practice per week.  A program in Ohio had their travel mites play 43 games this past season all over the state.  The house mites played 24 games this past season and they were predominantly played in local rinks.  Therefore, there is going to be a significant increase in the time you spend on the road between practices and games.

Financial Commitment

The financial commitment for travel hockey tends to be much greater than house hockey.  Expect base fees for travel hockey to be anywhere from $2,000 to $3,000 per year.  This does not include equipment costs, travel costs, or other costs.  Be prepared to spend $4,000-$6,000 per season depending on how much travel time you'll have.

In terms of equipment, you may start to spend a little more for equipment that is of better quality.  That doesn't mean you need to go out and get the best of the best.  But you'll find that equipment costs do go up as your child gets older and is playing in more competitive environments.  Higher quality equipment tends to be more durable.  Considering the increased ice time your child will see in travel hockey, you'll want to buy equipment that can hold up for an entire season.

Physical Commitment

With the increased number of games and practices that comes with travel hockey, there will be increased physical demands.  You can figure around 100 "sessions" (practices and games) in a single season.  That's quite a bit of physical demand for a 7-8 year old and you must think long and hard if that's what you want for your child and if he or she is up to the challenge.  And it is a challenge.

Travel hockey runs from the time your child is playing at the Mite level (7-8 years old) to the Midget/High School level (15-18 years old).  Most larger programs have coaches with extensive experience and many travel hockey programs are a stepping stone to AAA Hockey .  Travel hockey is a wonderful way to encourage your child to challenge themselves from a competitive standpoint.  It surely is a commitment and we've outlined the reasons why.  Whatever direction your child decides to take, make sure it's up to them what direction they go because they are the ones that have to endure the journey.

Travel Divisions

These Divisions are designed to help each young player learn the technical, tactical, physical and mental aspects of the game of hockey, with the goal of progressive life-long leaning and enjoyment of the game.  The travel demands for these teams require a high level of commitment for players and their families.  When registration numbers permit, each Division attempts to fill an A and a B team.  Team roster size varies by division and teams participate in the Treasure State League, traveling several weekends per month to play league games against other A and B teams across Montana. They also play in several travel tournaments per season. The travel team season typically runs from late September through mid-March.  Parents volunteer as coaches, team managers, locker room monitors, penalty box chaperones, time clock, and scorekeepers.

Travel Hockey (Hockey 101)

Travel hockey represents the highest level of commitment to youth hockey.  The travel hockey season is from September through March and travel teams participate in one of several leagues including the U.S. Premier Hockey League (USPHL), the Atlantic Youth Hockey League (AYHL), or the New Jersey Youth Hockey League (NJYHL).

There are two “tiers” of travel hockey.  Tier I consists of the AAA division and represents the highest level of youth hockey.  Not all travel organizations have a Tier I program.  Tier II consists of the remaining divisions - AA through B divisions – with AA being the most competitive division of Tier II hockey.

HIERARCHY OF YOUTH HOCKEY

youth travel hockey divisions

Tier I AAA teams participate in the USPHL or AYHL while the Tier II divisions participate in the NJYHL.  Players are required to participate in try-outs for the organization for which they are interested in playing to determine if they will make the team and in the case of Tier II for which division they will be selected.  USA Hockey, the governing body of youth hockey in the United States, requires that Tier I tryouts be held first followed by Tier II tryouts thereafter.  Tier I tryouts are held the week following the USA Hockey National Championships have concluded, which is usually the first or second week of April, with Tier II tryouts being held the following week.

12% of LGBTQ youth attempted suicide last year, nationwide survey says

A nationwide survey by the Trevor Project , the nation's leading suicide prevention organization for LGBTQ youth, found that more than one in 10 young people in the United States who identify as LGBTQ attempted suicide in 2023.

The survey, which focuses on the mental health of LGBTQ young people, included responses from 18,000 people aged 13 to 24, according to a news release announcing the findings .

More than a third of LGBTQ young people, or 39%, seriously considered suicide in the past year, the survey found. That number was even higher for transgender and nonbinary youth  at 46%. Of all LGBTQ youth, 12% attempted suicide in the past year.

Despite these risks, half of LGBTQ youth who wanted mental health care could not get it, the survey found.

The suicide risks were strongly associated with "anti-LGBTQ+ victimization" including recent politics and bullying related to their sexual or gender identity. Those who said they experienced bullying reported "significantly higher rates of attempting suicide in the past year," the Trevor Project said, and 90% of those surveyed said "their well-being was negatively impacted due to recent politics."

"Once again, this year's survey shows that considering or attempting suicide is not uncommon among LGBTQ+ young people. However, many of the contributing risk factors for suicide are preventable, and often rooted in victimizing behaviors of others," said Dr. Ronita Nath, the Vice President of Research at the Trevor Project, in the news release. "The results of this survey clearly identify a need for adults and allies to create more affirming environments for LGBTQ+ young people, and better support them in being their true selves."

The survey included information about how to support LGBTQ youth in what the Trevor Project called an attempt to highlight the association between "lower odds of suicide risk and access to LGBTQ+-affirming spaces and experiences." The survey found that LGBTQ people who reported living in accepting environments "attempted suicide at less than half the rate" of those who lived in unaccepting communities, and that transgender and nonbinary people who had their preferred pronouns used and had access to gender-affirming clothing and school bathrooms "had lower rates of attempting suicide compared to those who did not."

Lyndsey Fry leading group to preserve youth hockey in Arizona following Coyotes' exit

youth travel hockey divisions

Arizona Kachinas president and co-founder Lyndsey Fry is going to make sure that youth hockey in Arizona won’t feel the effects of the sale and relocation of the Coyotes.

On Thursday, Fry established the Matt Shott Arizona Hockey Legacy Foundation, a nonprofit that honors the former Coyotes director of hockey development, who died in December 2021. The goal of the foundation is to support all youth hockey programs for boys and girls at every level across the Phoenix metropolitan area.

“One of the reasons I had to make sure Matt’s name was included was because he was the one who spearheaded a lot of this programming. It’s very important to me and others that we protect what he created,” Fry said.

Without the Coyotes, Arizona loses a significant amount of financial backing that the NHL provided. When the NHL was in Arizona, the league contributed about $500,000 annually to youth hockey through the industry growth fund (IGF).

Through the NHL, the Coyotes got sticks in hands of kids at schools through street hockey and a physical education curriculum in Maricopa County. The Learn-To-Play program significantly reduced the price of the costly sport to $250.

All things Coyotes: Latest Arizona Coyotes news, schedule, roster, stats, injury updates and more.

Fry said she’s unsure of whether the IGF will continue and through the unknown, she’s seen this foundation as something that could be a certainty. And if everything does go to plan with the NHL returning via expansion, the foundation would add to that.

“This just seemed like the right way to do it and the amount of people who have been reaching out, it’s been incredibly validating. People are excited to be apart of this,” Fry said.

The 501c3 non-profit status is in process, but the foundation will start taking donations in May. The foundation will start with grant opportunities and programming.

"The Matt Shott Arizona Hockey Legacy Foundation is a non-profit organization designed to operate grassroots programming and offer grants that would support all rinks and programs in Arizona,'' a foundation press release said. "Shott's name hangs in every rink in the Valley because of the selfless dedication he gave for over a decade to grow hockey in Arizona. The foundation aims to build a $10 million endowment over the next five to 10 years."

More: First Arizonan to medal in Winter Olympics now helps girls like her play ice hockey

Fry, Arizona’s first Olympian in ice hockey and the first athlete from Arizona to win a medal in the Winter Olympics, has long been a champion for hockey in Arizona.

The Chandler native was one of only a few girls playing hockey soon after the beginning of the millennium. She had to move to Colorado in her teens to find girls’ teams and eventually earned a scholarship at Harvard.

After playing in college and at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, Fry ran youth hockey camps when the Coyotes approached her. She joined the organization initially as a special advisor to then team president Ahron Cohen, as well as a brand ambassador for the team in 2018, but later transitioned as the director of External Engagement & Female Hockey.

Alongside Shott, she helped create the Kachinas in 2019, the all-girls hockey program she never had growing up.

Without the financial backing it once had, Fry collaborated with several influential people in hockey to keep those programs going. She is joined by in the foundation by former Coyotes Jason Demers, Greg Adams, Darcy Hordichuk and Michael Grabner. She has also enlisted numerous business and community leaders, including Carly Accardo, mother of the late Leighton Accardo, and Shott’s mother, Shelley, and brother, Trevor.

Even though it was abrupt with how quickly the Coyotes' sale unfolded, gathering the group wasn't a hard sell.

“The beauty is that it really wasn’t that difficult. There are so many people that care deeply about the success of hockey in Arizona," Fry said. "I think that’s been the biggest fear for everybody. The players are going to be fine, the coaches and staff are going to be fine. It’s what happens to everything that’s left behind. When you really evaluate the impact of having the NHL here has had over the last almost three decades, the numbers speak for themselves as far as growth in the youth game and adult game. That’s ultimately what feeds all of our rinks and the entire ecosystem.”

MLS expands youth development program, offering free coaching resources and an annual grant

Major League Soccer announced initiatives on Tuesday to expand MLS Go, the league’s youth soccer program launched last year, as it continues to explore ways to make soccer more accessible to players at the grassroots level.

The two new initiatives are: the MLS Go Playbook, a free online resource for youth coaches, and the MLS Go Play Fund, an annual grant that can offset seasonal costs for players to join MLS Go teams. MLS Go has also partnered with two long-established recreational soccer associations, Cal North Youth Soccer and New Jersey Youth Soccer.

“These three initiatives are another moment for us to continue to push forward a program that we think is going to be really important, from a youth perspective, for MLS,” Kyle Albrecht, vice president of MLS Go, told The Athletic .

MLS Go, which launched last year, is for players ages 4-14. The program offers the league a way to tap into soccer at the lowest level of the game to grow participation and interest, while also trying to solve a major issue of the lack of grassroots, accessible clubs for young kids.

“You could have a child come into one of our programs now, at four or five, and theoretically not need to leave until the time they kick a ball in a first team match,” Albrecht said.

When it first launched, MLS Go focused on groups that may have sat on the outside of the existing youth soccer ecosystem, Albrecht said, like YMCAs, Boys and Girls clubs or other nonprofit organizations. The league has since gravitated to partnering with more established soccer programs, like Cal North and the New Jersey Youth Soccer.

The two associations collectively service more than 100,000 youth soccer players and have hundreds of established clubs in their respective communities. Through this partnership, recreational clubs can apply to be MLS Go league operators to gain access to league programming and resources, like branded uniforms. MLS Go teams also have close ties to their local MLS teams, like the New York Red Bulls or Philadelphia Union for clubs in New Jersey, or the San Jose Earthquakes for those in Northern California.

MLS clubs also “played a vital role” in “aligning with the state associations,” Albrecht said. “In addition to things like the Play Fund and the Playbook, access to our clubs, (through) things like a ticketing program we have in place with those clubs, we think adds another layer of value.”

youth travel hockey divisions

The Play Fund and Playbook are new initiatives the league hopes will help grow accessibility.

MLS has said one of the goals of MLS Go is to lower the cost of entry into soccer. Costs to join an MLS Go team can range from $50 to $150 per player per season, depending on the location of a team, Albrecht said. The cost, he added, can be tied to an area’s cost of living. A team in a bigger city, for example, may be more expensive.

Still, that price point remains out of reach for some families, says Sola Winley, MLS executive vice president and chief engagement and inclusion officer. That’s where the league’s Play Fund initiative comes in, an annual commitment to help offset the cost of entry through a partnership with RCX Sports.

“If there is a economic barrier for you to participate in soccer, we’re trying to do everything we can to reduce that, and in the case of the Go Play Fund, eliminate it altogether,” Winley said.

The fund will be available for MLS Go leagues in every market. There will be a link on the MLS Go website for those who want to apply online, and the league is hoping to make the process “as frictionless as possible,” Winley said. The league’s initial target is to help at least 3 to 5 percent of MLS Go participants.

The vast pay-to-play model of soccer in the U.S. is uniquely American, with families having to navigate complicated and expensive pathways for their children to play. Costs rise significantly when considering the cost of traveling across the country with a club for competitions.

“Domestically here is the inverse of everywhere it is around the world, where, if you’re interested in playing football — global football — you’re playing pickup football in the streets. The academy systems, there’s no cost to them, right? You’re not paying to travel,” Winley said. “Here — that’s not the case. There’s a very high barrier to entry.”

Winley estimated that, on average, it can cost between $2,000 to $3,000 a year to play club soccer in the U.S., not including the cost of travel. The Aspen Institute estimated in its annual parent survey that the average annual cost for having a child in soccer was around $1,188 in the fall of 2022. That’s why keeping costs low is important, Winley said.

“We tried to make (MLS) Go an accessible price point for folks,” Winley said. “We also want to make sure that if there’s anyone outside of that price point that they can participate as well.”

With MLS Go, the league is trying to increase access for players as young as four years old, all the way through playing professionally. It is meant to be more recreational, introducing players to the sport and to the MLS brand at an early age.

Versions of youth soccer in the U.S. have long focused on identifying talent to go pro. In 1999, the Super Y-League was founded in affiliation with U.S. Soccer and MLS for that purpose. By 2007, the U.S. Soccer Development Academy was founded, featuring youth academies and clubs from leagues like MLS and the United Soccer League. That was until the DA folded in 2020, following financial issues from the pandemic.

In recent years, MLS has branched off on its own, founding MLS Next in 2020, what many called the successor to the DA. MLS Next includes teams from U-13 to U-19. In 2021, MLS founded MLS Next Pro, a new professional league that would serve as a pathway to the top division of MLS. And then last year, MLS Go was launched to encompass the league’s reach across all levels of the sport.

The new initiatives announced Tuesday also provide access for coaches with the first MLS Go Playbook, a free coaching resource that will be available online through the MLS Go website. It will be available only via desktop at first, but the league is working to release a mobile application in a couple of months. Though right now it’s only available in English, the league plans to develop versions in French and Spanish.

“Our idea was to improve the best practices at the grassroots level,” said Fred Lipka, MLS vice president of player and youth development. “We think it’s completely interdependent, what we’re doing at the highest level and what we try to implement at the grassroots level. We wanted to build a tool which is free, accessible, but also linked with what we are doing in our (MLS) Next academies for first-time coaches.”

The manual is like a beginner’s guide to the sport, while also delving into the specifics of how each age group can best absorb the game.

“If we don’t elevate the level of awareness of soccer in the U.S., it will be difficult to convince people that the beautiful game is the best sport to play, because in fact, that’s the easiest sport to play,” Lipka said, “and that’s the universality of soccer.”

For MLS, growing the lowest level of the game is good for business, especially as the league looks ahead to the attention the sport will receive from Copa America this summer, the Club World Cup next year and the men’s World Cup in 2026. The 1994 men’s tournament spurred the creation of MLS, and now the league is preparing for another era of growth.

“This program, MLS Go, was built with a long-term lens in mind, from a growth perspective. We’re not necessarily rushing to have that exponential growth tomorrow. So, for us, it’s about setting this program up in the right way to capture the opportunity that we have around ‘26 and beyond,” Albrecht said. “There’s no reason why half a million kids plus can’t be playing in the program on the back of the World Cup.”

Knicks vs. 76ers: NBA admits Tyrese Maxey's crucial 4-point play in Game 5 should have been waved off

For the second time this series, a frantic ending featured a few missed calls.

050124-tyresemaxey.jpg

Yet another late mistake by officials has marred the ending of one of the most exciting finishes in the 2024 NBA postseason. Philadelphia 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey made two phenomenal clutch plays to force overtime in Tuesday's wild 112-106 Game 5 win over the New York Knicks . On Wednesday, however, the league admitted that one of them shouldn't have counted.

In the Last Two-Minute Report from Game 5 , the NBA said that Maxey's four-point play with 25 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter should have been waved off due to a traveling violation.

"Maxey gathers the ball on his left foot, takes two legal steps, and then moves his right foot again just before he is fouled on his shot," the report stated.

In real time there was little, if any, discussion about Maxey's 4-point play being a traveling violation. But under a microscope, you can clearly see that he slides his pivot foot in order to draw contact from Knicks center Mitchell Robinson . The play was one of the game's most pivotal, bringing the Sixers within two points and eventually leading to Maxey's game-tying 3-pointer from the logo with eight seconds left. The dynamic guard finished with 46 points and nine assists, going 7-for-12 from 3-point range.

The 76ers were also the beneficiary of another missed call, this one occurring in overtime. After a missed floater by Knicks guard Jalen Brunson, the referees deemed Josh Hart to be out of bounds when he attempted to save the ball. In the Last Two-Minute Report, the league said that Hart was not, in fact, out of bounds.

The Knicks trailed by two points at the time and Hart's save went directly to teammate Isaiah Hartenstein, who was standing under the basket. Perhaps Hartenstein could have made a game-tying layup, or at the very least the Knicks would have had a fresh 14 seconds to attempt another shot. Instead, the 76ers were granted possession.

This, of course, is not the first time that the Last Two-Minute Report has led to controversy during this series. The league admitted multiple referee mistakes as the Knicks launched a similar late comeback in Game 2, saying that Maxey was fouled twice on the inbounds play that led to Donte DiVincenzo's go-ahead 3-pointer, and that 76ers coach Nick Nurse should have been granted timeout.

If Philadelphia fans were upset about the missed calls in Game 2, they can take solace in the fact that without the Game 5 mistake, they would likely have been eliminated from the playoffs. Instead they live to fight again in Thursday's Game 6 at Wells Fargo Center, when eyes will once again be on the officiating in what has been a physical and eventful series.
