Why Are Australian Swifties Screaming 'Sydney' While Taylor Swift Sings 'Blank Space'? Here's The Story Behind The Viral Eras Tour Moment

Every once in a while we get a fun lil addition to the Eras Tour from Taylor Swift . From slightly changing the lyrics in “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” to saying “Karma is the guy of the Chiefs” instead of "the screen" when Swift’s boyfriend Travis Kelce was in the house, the pop star is a fan of giving Swifties moments like these. However, during her first night in Sydney, Australia, the fans decided to pay her back by referencing a hilarious (and viral) moment from the 1989 Tour. 

For context, when Taylor Swift sang “Blank Space” in Sydney, Australia, the crowd screamed the name of their city back at her, which you can see in the viral TikTok below:

Clearly, the “Shake It Off” singer, her dancers and the crowd loved it, and the story behind why this “Sydney!” moment happened explains why. 

The Origins Of The Sydney Chant

Taylor Swift typically releases professionally shot versions of her concerts (for example, you’ll be able to stream the Eras Tour with a Disney+ subscription starting March 15), and she filmed the 1989 Tour at her show in Sydney, Australia in 2015. 

During the show, when Swift performed “Blank Space” – via a TikTok from taylorsloverxx – she wanted to do an “experiment” with the Australian crowd. She then banged on a metal bar with a golf club and started chanting “Sydney” between lyrics. As the song progressed she layered her vocals, and between each line of the song, the name of the city was repeated. For example, the back and forth went like this:

So, this unconventional moment from the tour resurfaced and began going viral the closer Swift got to performing in Australia this year, eventually leading to the fans doing this chant for the pop star during the Eras Tour. 

Swifties Started Using The Sydney Chant On TikTok

Leading up to Taylor Swift’s shows in Sydney, Australia, Swifties started using the sound from the 1989 concert film on TikTok. For example, domcielak posted this:

Even the city of Sydney got in on the fun, posting this TikTok that now has over 1 million views on their official account:

All this lore and anticipation eventually led to the fans screaming “Sydney” during “Blank Space” at the Eras Tour, and they were so loud and proud, that Taylor Swift herself acknowledged it during her concert. 

That Led To Swifties Screaming Sydney In Sydney, And Taylor Swift Loved It

After Swift sang “Blank Space,” and the chant shown at the top of this story happened, the singer reacted to it. She’s made it clear that she’s super aware of what Swifties are saying online – I mean she literally gave the “22” hat to a TikToker who makes videos about her that she loves recently. So, she had a hunch the “Sydney” chant would happen. During the surprise song set she addressed what happened, saying (via a TikTok from Alright Hey ):

By the way, do you know how cool it was when I was singing ‘Blank Space,’ and I was like ‘Boys only,’ wait can we just do it again? I’m like ‘Boys only want love if it’s torture.’ [Crowd screams Sydney!] Ahh! That was so cool when you did that, I was hoping you would, and you did. It was great.

It’s moments like this that make the Eras Tour special. From screaming “Taylor, you’ll be fine,” to “1, 2, 3…Let’s go bitch,” Swifites' traditions for these concerts are fun and very involved. This Sydney chant is just another lovely example.

Taylor Swift Fans Recreate ‘Sydney’ Chant While Singing ‘Blank Space’ on ‘Eras Tour’

Sydney fans gave Taylor Swift a blast from the past — and in case you aren’t a full-on Swiftie, Us is here to break down the “Sydney” chant.

As Swift, 34, sang “Blank Space” during the 1989 portion of her Eras Tour on Friday, February 23, fans cheered her on by chanting “Sydney.” In social media videos shared via Instagram, Swift could be seen smiling and nodding her head as the crowd cheered her on. Swift’s boyfriend , Travis Kelce , was also seen singing along from a VIP tent.

“IT REALLY HAPPENED 😭😭😭,” one account captioned the clip. “Taylor even called us out afterwards saying ‘I was hoping that you guys would do that.’ WE MADE HER PROUD.” More fans shared their reactions in the comments section.

“I want to cry this is so special,” one social media user gushed, as another added, “It’s so magical!!!!!!!!!!”

Ahead of the show, the official Taylor Nation Instagram account encouraged fans to recreate the chant. “SYDNEY!” 🏌🏼‍♀️ It’s finally time to recreate *the chant* tonight at #SydneyTSTheErasTour…,” the account wrote. “Let us hear that back! 📣 #TSTheErasTour.”

The fan favorite chant originated when Swift went on her 1989 World Tour in 2015. At each stop, she screamed the city’s name into a microphone that repeated itself as she harmonized with it. After her Sydney show, the chant went viral.

“Alright Sydney, I would like to do a little experiment,” Swift said into the microphone while taking a golf club and hitting it into a metal pole. (In the “Blank Space” music video, Swift hilariously used a golf club to destroy a car.) She then screamed “Syd-ney” into the microphone and said, “Let me hear that back,” as the chant repeated itself. Swift then continued singing the rest of the song.

Elsewhere during the 1989 segment of her Eras Tour on Friday, Swift sang “Bad Blood,” which is known to be about her former feud with Katy Perry . Perry, 39, was actually in attendance on Friday and singing along with Swift from a VIP tent. She even recorded the song on her phone and posted sweet pics from the show.

The duo’s falling out originated in 2012, when Swift hired a number of dancers who previously performed with Perry on her California Dreams tour in 2011. Six months into Swift’s Red tour, Perry asked the dancers to join her on her Prismatic World Tour , so they left Swift’s shows and reunited with Perry.

Swift later opened up about the experience during a 2014 interview with Rolling Stone . “For years, I was never sure if we were friends or not,” she said. “[Then last year] she did something so horrible. I was like, ‘Oh, we’re just straight-up enemies.’ … She basically tried to sabotage an entire arena tour. She tried to hire a bunch of people out from under me. … So now I have to avoid her. It’s awkward, and I don’t like it.”

Years later, the duo rekindled their friendship and Perry appeared in Swift’s 2019 “You Need to Calm Down” music video. The pair dressed up in hamburger and french fry costumes and hugged each other.

Will 'Blank Space' chant continue after Sydney on Eras Tour? Taylor Swift's team hopes so

S YDNEY, Australia — A new trend has started at the Eras Tour during "Blank Space," and Taylor Swift 's team wants every city after "Syd-Ney" to continue the chant.

Taylor Nation, Swift's in-house marketing team, tweeted , "Cannot wait to do the chant in Singapore, Paris, Stockholm, Lisbon, Madrid, Lyon, Edinburgh, Liverpool, Cardiff, London, Dublin, Amsterdam, Zürich, Milan, Gelsenkirchen, Hamburg, Munich, Warsaw, Vienna, Toronto, Vancouver, Miami, New Orleans, and Indianapolis."

It's easier to do with two syllables, but we're sure the fandom can find a way to squeeze Gelsenkirchen and Indianapolis into the brief pause.

Where did the 'Blank Space' chant come from?

In the 1989 World Tour movie, which was filmed in the eastern Australia city in 2015, Swift grabs an iron golf club for the bridge and strikes a metal pole sticking out of the stage: boom, boom. She pauses and does it again: boom, boom. But this time sings "Syd-ney."

The eight-count sound effect loops as she starts singing, "Boys only want love if it's torture." The sound has been turned into a TikTok trend with fans recreating it all week at the Sydney Opera House. The top-of-mind chant continued inside Accor Stadium and only grew louder with each passing concert day.

On night one , Swift made a reference to the audience's interaction.

"By the way, do you know how cool it was when I was singing 'Blank Space,'" she said. "can we do it again?" The crowd yelled "Syd-ney" after she said, "Boys only want love if it's torture."

Swift said 83,000 fans packed inside Accor Stadium on Sunday night. Saturday had 82,000 fans. Friday had 81,000. She has one more night in Australia before doing six shows in Singapore and taking a two-month break.

Taylor Swift's Eras: How the most successful concert tour ever got started in Arizona

Taylor Swift launched The Eras Tour era with a sold-out two-night stand at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, on Friday and Saturday, March 17-18, 2023, the opening salvo of a record-breaking tour that has dominated headlines and, in many ways, the conversation ever since.

The Eras Tour is a phenomenon as big as Swift herself, if such a thing is possible — the highest-grossing tour of all time and the first tour in history to generate more than $1 billion in revenue.

The concert film — "Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour" — released in theaters worldwide on Oct. 13, 2023, quickly became the highest-grossing concert film in history , a record previously held by Justin Bieber.  

Following The Eras Tour launch, Swift immediately shot to No. 1 on Pollstar's Artist Power Index chart , ending 2023 as Time magazine’s perfectly obvious choice for Person of the Year .

"Swift’s accomplishments as an artist — culturally, critically and commercially — are so legion that to recount them seems almost beside the point," Time wrote.

Then, after running down a laundry list of those accomplishments while placing her alongside Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson and Madonna as a pop star, Time explained why this year more than any other year.

"As a celebrity — who by dint of being a woman is scrutinized for everything from whom she dates to what she wears — she has long commanded constant attention and knows how to use it," Time wrote.

"But this year, something shifted. To discuss her movements felt like discussing politics or the weather — a language spoken so widely it needed no context. She became the main character of the world."

By that point, USA TODAY had hired its own Taylor Swift reporter and Swift had grabbed another first — first billionaire in history with music as the main source of income .

How the Year of Taylor Swift began in Glendale, Arizona

And to think: The Year of Taylor all began in Glendale, which renamed itself Swift City for the weekend in her honor.

A symbolic rebrand, the Swift City storyline played out on digital billboards along freeways and in Glendale's Westgate Entertainment District, where State Farm Stadium is located, welcoming fans to Swift City.

For what it's worth, we would've gone with Glendale (Taylor's Version) .

Swift had launched the Reputation Tour in that same stadium five years earlier.

She really likes us!

The Eras Tour is 'a journey through all of my musical eras'

In announcing the tour, Swift had promised “a journey through all of my musical eras,” which by any reasonable metric, is a lot of ground to cover — 10 hit albums, four of which have been released since the conclusion of the Reputation Tour in late 2018.

And she made it look easy, enjoying the journey as much as the Swifties who flocked to the show did while revisiting her catalog one era at a time in a marathon set that ran more than three hours, squeezing in 44 songs before the night was through.

Her earliest eras weren’t as prominently featured in the journey as her recent albums. There was only one song, “Tim McGraw,” from her first album, “Taylor Swift,” and one, “Enchanted,” from her third release, “Speak Now.”

The early albums she’d already rerecorded in “Taylor’s Version” editions by the time the tour launched were given more time in the spotlight. There were three songs from her second album “Fearless” and four from her fourth album, “Red.”

The Eras Tour favored the eras since the Reputation Tour

It made sense that Swift would give more stage time to the albums she hadn’t had a chance to tour since being forced to pull the plug on Lover Fest, the tour she had planned in support of 2019’s “Lover,” in response to the pandemic that took everybody off the road in 2020.

Not quite an hour into her performance on Night 1 in Glendale, Swift asked fans, “Is it just me or do we have a lot of things to catch up on?”

Noting that “it’s been a really long time since I’ve been on tour,” she said they’d “added four new members to the family” since that last tour, introducing them by name as “Lover,” “Folklore,” Evermore” and “Midnights,” her latest release, which brought the concert to an end with a seven-song sampler.

It was a breathtaking journey through 17 years’ worth of musical eras with the artist connecting with at every step along the way.

When Taylor dove into a stream and sang 'All Too Well'

The stage show was designed to reach the back rows of the stadium with a breathtaking blend of artful set design — that “Folklore” cabin was cottagecore gold — and film projected on the massive screen behind the stage.

It was a concert packed with highlights, the most theatrical of which came at the end of an understated “Tim McGraw,” which Swift performed alone on a satellite stage, accompanying herself on an upright piano. At the song’s conclusion, she stood up and appeared to dive into a stream to swim beneath the runaway to the main stage.

As entertaining as that was, the full 10-minute version of “All Too Well” from “Red (Taylor’s Version),” the longest song to top the Billboard Hot 100, emerged as the concert’s emotional centerpiece, a heartbreaking triumph that ended in a haunting shower of paper snowflakes.

That opening-night performance also introduced the concept of “ surprise songs ,” two unannounced acoustic songs she planned to slip into the set each night just to keep fans guessing in the Era of the Online Setlist, where a quick Google search can reveal all.

The Era Tour is scheduled to conclude on Dec. 8, 2024, in Vancouver, Canada.

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce Go Instagram Official—With Help From the Royal Family

After dating for almost a year,  Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce have finally done it.

With the help of actual British royalty, the pop princess and her NFL prince made their love story Instagram official. Taylor shared a selfie of herself and Travis appearing with Prince William  and kids Prince George , 10, and Princess Charlotte , 9, backstage at her Eras tour concert at Wembley Stadium in London June 21— the Prince of Wales' 42nd birthday .

"Happy Bday M8!" the "Blank Space" singer captioned her Instagram post. "London shows are off to a splendid start."

While this marks the first time Taylor and Travis have appeared together in an official Instagram post, the singer did share a glimpse of her boyfriend on social media in February, posting a clip showing the two celebrating with her parents after the Chiefs' Super Bowl victory. In April, she shared a YouTube short  that also featured Travis, to accompany the release of her new album  The Tortured Poets Department , which includes a couple of songs that many fans speculate are about the NFL star .

Meanwhile, William, who famously joined Taylor and  Jon Bon Jovi  onstage to perform a Bon Jovi  song at an event in Kensington Palace in 2013 , also shared a backstage photo, showing himself, Charlotte and George taking another selfie with the "Cruel Summer" singer.

The prince captioned the post, shared on his and wife Kate Middleton 's Instagram page, "Thank you @taylorswift for a great evening! #LondonTSTheErastour."

Not spotted: The Princess of Wales—who is undergoing cancer treatment —and youngest son Prince Louis , 6. 

William and the kids watched Taylor's concert from a VIP box, where the prince was seen dancing to "Shake It Off."

While this marked the first time the royal family has been seen at a Taylor concert, Travis has not attended six of them since his famous failed attempt to pass a friendship bracelet with his number on it to his now-girlfriend at her show  at Kansas City's Arrowhead Stadium—home of the Chiefs— almost one year ago in July 2023 .

At the London concert,  Travis joined Taylor's parents , Scott Swift and  Andrea Swift , inside a VIP tent. The star athlete's brother, retired NFL star  Jason Kelce —who joined his sibling in exchanging friendship bracelets with fans, sister-in-law  Kylie Kelce and friend  Ross Travis were also spotted at the show, as were Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan and Queer Eye alum Jonathan Van Ness .
