The company was formed in 2012 following a significant realignment of ferry transportation in the Philippines in which the brands SuperFerry , Cebu Ferries and SuperCat under the Aboitiz Transport System was purchased by Negros Navigation for US$105 million. [2] At the same time, a unit of China-Asean Investment Cooperation Fund , a Netherlands -based, private equity firm wholly owned by the Chinese government , took a controlling stake in Negros Navigation through an equity infusion. [3] [4] [2] Because Negros Navigation was a privately held firm the exact amount invested by the Fund was not disclosed. [5]

2GO, previously as a logistics arm of Aboitiz Transport System, is now one of the major operator of inter-island vessels in the country, [6] which as of early 2024 has a total of 11 operating vessels. [7] [8] It has a total passenger capacity of 7,450,162 passengers and an aggregate cargo capacity of 338,305 twenty-foot equivalent units . [8]

SuperFerry , founded as Aboitiz Shipping Company , later Aboitiz SuperFerry was one of the largest ferry companies in the Philippines before it was purchased by Negros Navigation . The shipping company was known in the 1990s as William, Gothong & Aboitiz ( WG&A Philippines ), where the latter eventually bought the entire shares of WG&A consortium from William Lines and Gothong Lines Group leaving the full control of the company to Aboitiz. The Gothong Group restarted its own shipping company called Carlos A. Gothong Lines (CAGLI), while the William Group opted to concentrate on its logistics, warehousing, and courier business, called Fast Logistics. SuperFerry and its sister companies SuperCat and Cebu Ferries were eventually merged with Negros Navigation where the latter bought all the shares of Aboitiz Transport System and relaunched in 2012 as 2GO Travel . The SuperFerry brand was subsequently retired after the merger.

Negros Navigation Co., Inc. (NENACO) was one of the oldest domestic shipping companies in the Philippines. [9] It was organized and registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on July 26, 1932, for the purpose of transporting passengers and cargo at ports of call in the Philippines. In the 1960s Nenaco was the first among the domestic shipping companies to operate brand new, fast, and luxurious air-conditioned passenger ships. Throughout the 1970s & 1980s, NENACO constructed and operated a modern passenger terminal in Manila's North Harbor and pioneered in offering special cruises to the Philippine tourist spots using its coastwise vessels. Nenaco also launched its containerization program and ushered a new industry trend on the use of roll-on roll-off (“RORO”) vessels. It used to deploy shuttle buses in Baclaran , Cubao and Alabang which takes passengers to the pier terminal. [10]

In the 1990s, Nenaco became the first Philippine shipping company to be listed in the stock exchange. Proceeds amounting to P916.86 million from the initial public offering (IPO) were used to support the “Globalization Program” of the company that involved fleet expansion and service modernization because of the investments in those years, Negros Navigation soon became one of the largest transport-related companies in the Philippines. [11]

NENACO later merged with SuperCat , SuperFerry and Cebu Ferries to form 2GO Travel , the second time major Philippine shipping companies merged after the William Lines-Gothong Lines-Aboitiz Shipping merger (WG&A) in 1996. At the same time, the China-Asean Investment Cooperation Fund , a private equity fund wholly-owned the government of the People's Republic of China through an equity infusion gained a controlling interest in Negros Navigation and subsequently changed the company into the 2GO Group with 2GO Travel its shipping-company subsidiary. The 'NENACO' brand was eventually retired in mid-2012.

When 2GO started passenger ferry operations, it inherited vessels from the remnants of the former shipping companies: SuperFerry , SuperCat , Negros Navigation and Cebu Ferries . The vessels used to carry names derived from Roman Catholic saints until recently where newer vessels were named from certain "Ma" words with 2GO prefix that describes the positive attitudes of being a Filipino (e.g. 2GO Maligaya , 2GO Masagana , etc.). The routes shown below are the ships' usual route assignments. The ships may be assigned to other routes when needed (such as when the original assigned vessel was on a drydock).

2GO also operates dedicated cargo vessels alongside its passenger ships:

2GO's livery has undergone several revisions throughout its history. Despite the differences in the design, all of their ships were predominantly painted with their company colors: white and magenta.

M/V "St. Leo The Great" painted on 2012-era livery MV St Leo the Great 2.jpg

Their first livery is composed of an all-white color dominating the ship with the funnel/s and the waterline painted with magenta. The sides of the hull featured the “2GO Travel” branding as well as the then company's signature logo, a large stylized letter “G” painted near the bow and to the funnel. The decks were painted light blue.

A special version of this livery was briefly used on one of their vessel, MV "St. Ignatius of Loyola" . This special livery features a wave-like shape on the bow and on the stern, with several shapes of birds, ball, star, and maskara and is added to the bow, also with the stern section featuring the phrase "Sarap Maglakbay! (traveling is fun!)".

2GO revised its livery during this time to a much cleaner and simpler design. Although similar to its previous livery with the ships featuring an all-white livery dominating the hull and the superstructure, this time the funnel which is previously painted with magenta, is now painted in white. The “2GO Travel” branding which is previously seen on the hull was revised to feature only the word “2GO” and is now painted also to the funnel. The large letter “G” was omitted making the livery much simpler. The waterline and the deck retained their original colors. This livery is currently used on all of 2GO's vessels prior to its new acquisitions in 2021.

In 2023, a new version of this livery was unveiled, it is still identical with the old livery except for the addition of a large wave-like figure in the bow and stern mimicking the 2021 livery used by the newer 2GO ships. It was applied on the older vessels of 2GO.

2021-present

M/V 2GO Masagana painted on the current 2021 livery MV 2GO Masagana right side, Iloilo Port (Iloilo City; 01-25-2023).jpg

A new livery is unveiled in 2021 with the introduction of its newest vessel, 2GO Maligaya, and later, 2GO Masagana. The livery was overhauled giving the ships a much modern and festive appearance. Although still dominated with white and magenta colors, the new livery now features several colorful shapes scattered around the vessel representing 2GO's brand identity, core pillars, and values with the “2GO” branding placed near the stern. The bow now features a large wave-like figure painted in magenta with white stripes, with vessels’ names in a new font, painted in different colors akin to a rainbow. The future vessels will be painted with this version of livery.

Cargo Vessels

SuperCat was a former part of 2GO Group until it was transferred to Chelsea Logistics Corporation in 2019. [49] SuperCat operates the following vessels:

On August 16, 2013, at 9 pm as it approached Cebu City 's harbor, the MV St. Thomas Aquinas , formerly SuperFerry 2 [55] collided with the cargo ship Sulpicio Express Siete of Sulpicio Lines and sank in 100 feet deep off Talisay , Cebu . [56] The ship was carrying 831 people—715 passengers and 116 crewmembers. [56] 629 people were rescued immediately and as of August 17, 2013, 31 bodies have been recovered leaving 172 unaccounted for. [56] The Sulpicio Express Siete with 36 crew members on board did not sink and returned safely to port. [56] It had a large hole in its bow above the water line, clearly visible in news photos. [56]

In 2021, MV St. Anthony de Padua was undergoing quarantine in Bauan, Batangas after 28 of the 82 crew members aboard tested positive for the coronavirus disease 2019 . There were no known passengers on board the said vessel. [57] The Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) in CALABARZON suspended the vessel's passenger safety certificate, and Transport Secretary Arthur Tugade tasked MARINA, the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) , and the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) to investigate possible lapses leading to the incident. 2GO Freight, on the other hand, is 2GO’s unit that provides cargo handling services for various types of goods and shipments including full container load (FCL) and less than a container load (LCL), loose cargo, roll-on or roll-off and rolling cargo.

2GO Freight transported 27% of the total freight in the market last year. “It is a major chunk of the economy,” Mr. Parco said.

Another core business unit of 2GO Group is 2GO Logistics, Inc. that provides services in logistics, transportation, warehousing and inventory management. It employs a variety of tools that enable value creation and business growth for its customers and 2GO itself.

2GO Logistics captures a big share of the sea-based delivery market in the country, handling up to special containers such as isotanks and refrigerated vans. It also supervises international logistics involving international sourcing and consolidation, customs clearance and brokerage, project cargo management, heavy lift and special cargo handling, global containerized transport, international freight forwarding, and warehousing.

With its wide array of shipping services and end-to-end logistics solutions, 2GO has played a critical role in facilitating effective and efficient trade operations which is the backbone of the country’s economic growth. As Mr. Parco explained, 2GO is helping businesses, especially manufacturing and consumer goods companies, by transporting their commodities around the country.

In this manner, 2GO has become part of every Filipinos’ lives. From the raw materials to finished goods they use and consume, 2GO served as a reliable partner of individuals and businesses in moving these commodities from Metro Manila to provinces or vice versa.

To adapt to the changing landscape in the transport and logistics industry, 2GO is streamlining its operations and is continuously seeking ways to improve its services.

Recently, the company unveiled the fully-furnished M/V St. Leo the Great as part of its efforts to modernize its fleets. The passenger and cargo vessel now boasts a world-class accommodation, modern features, and various amenities that give passengers an exceptional sea-travel experience.

In addition, the company is also utilizing the advantages of the Internet to efficiently reach its market and deliver utmost convenience to its consumers.

“Innovation is there, we would not grow if we will not match or surpass on whatever our competitors are offering,” Mr. Parco said. “These are the things we are looking into to help us maintain our leadership in the market.”

In the years to come, Mr. Parco said that 2GO will continuously strive to be the market leader by extending its shipping and logistics services and focusing on factors that cater to the growing needs of the customers. Given the company’s size and reach, it aims to continue to be able to touch the lives of Filipinos through its services.

The most popular 2Go Travel ticket options are Tourist Class and Cabin for 4 which offer the best value for your money. Sample 2Go Travel ticket prices are as follows:

  • Mega Value – USD32
  • Super Value – USD36

  • Tourist Class – USD41
  • Cabin for 4 – USD62

2Go Promo Tickets

To grab the best deals with 2Go, shop during seasonal sales periods. 2Go Travel promo tickets are a great way to save big on your sea journey. The best strategy to take advantage of this is to subscribe to the company’s pages in social media. There are both promos for immediate travel and advanced booking.

  • 2Go has really placed a premium on the safety and comfort of their passengers. Security checks of luggage are always conducted. There is a sufficient number of life jackets on board, lifeboats, an in-house medical unit, a rescue boat and even a few police representatives.
  • The amenities and facilities are not to be frowned upon, either. There is always a good front office, a 24/7 cafe, a full bar, live entertainment, salons, and spas.
  • There are charging stations on board for passengers of all classes.
  • 2Go ships including common areas and toilets are generally cleaner compared to other ferries around the archipelago.
  • Overnight trips are a great way to save some bucks on accommodation and entertainment.
  • 2Go can arrange onward transportation for passengers through their partner companies to make your travel even more convenient.
  • Trips can be delayed or cancelled due to weather conditions, especially during the typhoon season. Be ready and be flexible. This is not the fault of the company, though. Yet in case of a delay no complimentary food and drinks are offered.
  • The refund process if you require one can take as long as 2 months if you cancel your tickets paid for by a bank card for any reason.
  • Air-conditioning is often freezing cold but overall the price and experience are hard to beat.

The passenger sea service known as 2Go Travel is the sole Manila-based major interisland passenger ferry company. 2Go was founded in 2012 after a big realignment of various Philippine ferry services, including SuperFerry and Cebu Ferries. These brands were bought by Negros Navigation (NENACO), eventually retiring the “NENACO” label and forming 2Go Travel.

Today, 2Go serves many of the old SuperFerry and NENACO routes, with its whole fleet possessing a total passenger capacity of 7,450,162 passengers. It continues to be one of the most budget-friendly ways to transport people and things to different points in the Philippines, offering tour packages, affordable cargo delivery, and Roll On Roll Off (RORO) services.

2Go Travel is part of the 2Go Group which is a subsidiary of SM Investments Corporation, one of the largest conglomerates in the country.

LOOK: 2GO’s newest ship MV Maligaya

GRAND LOBBY. MV 2GO Maligaya's lobby boasts an elevator.

Planning to travel soon and looking to try something new?

The Philippines’ largest sea travel provider 2GO Travel unveiled its newest ship, MV 2GO Maligaya, built and fitted with amenities in consideration of physical distancing guidelines.

Maligaya is the “fastest, largest, and most technologically advanced” roll-on, roll-off passenger ship, joining 2GO’s fleet of 10 vessels. It can accommodate up to 800 people, with much bigger rooms and wider common areas.

2go travel wikipedia

The new ship also has bigger rooms.

Maligaya does not have the typical suite room – the biggest room in older vessels. Instead, it offers the state room, which appears more spacious. The room has chairs, a table, and flat-screen TV – just like staying in a hotel.

2go travel wikipedia

2GO is also introducing two new accommodation types – the business premium room and the tourist premium room – the upgraded versions of the business and tourist classes.

2GO vice president and head of sea solutions Dan Fernan said the new offerings are cheaper than the state room and bigger than the existing business and tourist classes.

“We’re harping on safe travels. It’s a perfect choice for solo travelers who prefer to social distance,” Fernan said.

2go travel wikipedia

In the older vessels, the “value” accommodation types meant staying in a room with 20 or more people. But Maligaya does not offer that.

For the newest ship, the most affordable accommodation type is the tatami room for 10 people.

2go travel wikipedia

Maligaya has a salon, convenience store, and restaurants aboard.

It also offers a gaming room and a prayer room.

2GO kept the karaoke bar but downsized it into a room, so one group can stay in it at a time.

‘Recovery is coming soon’

At a time when businesses are tightening their belts because of the coronavirus pandemic, 2GO Group chief operating officer Waldo Basilla said the perfect time to invest is now.

“Why do we keep on investing? I think it’s the best time we invest actually. We believe that recovery is coming soon,” he said.

Basilla added that 2GO is investing in technology given the shift in consumer behavior, focusing on services that would provide a “more integrated solution.”

Maligaya will be linking Manila, the Visayas, and Mindanao with 2GO’s Manila-Cebu-Cagayan de Oro route. With a speed of 23.5 knots, travel time from Manila to Cebu will be at around 17 hours – faster than the usual 22 to 25 hours.

Maligaya also boasts the latest international shipping technology, with its integrated navigation and control system, advanced fire alarm systems, and multiple collision bulkheads as collision mitigating support.

Its maiden voyage is scheduled on Sunday, May 23. – Rappler.com

MV 2GO Maligaya is an addition to 2GO’s current fleet of up to 10 ships, servicing 20 major ports of call in the Philippines.

The acquisition of the MV 2GO Maligaya is part of the company’s fleet modernization efforts to provide high speed and reliability in the movement of essential goods nationwide, while at the same time upgrading sea travel onboard experience.

“This is a manifestation of 2GO’s commitment in providing superior products and services to our customers. The new addition complements the broader service offerings of the other business units under the 2GO Group.  As a major player in the industry, it is imperative for us to take the lead in product innovation and unparalleled service to keep in step with world-class standards,” said 2GO chief operating officer Waldo Basilla.

Basilla said the new vessel’s maiden voyage is set for May 23 and will sail Cebu and Cagayan de Oro.

Made by Japanese shipbuilders and with a German main engine, the MV 2GO Maligaya, according to 2G, embodies the latest international shipping standards and technologies, including an integrated navigation and control system, advanced fire alarm systems, and multiple collision bulkheads as a collision mitigating support, among others.

The MV 2GO Maligaya is the most technologically advanced roll-on, roll-off passenger (ROPAX) ship that has set sail in the Philippine waters, it said.

MV 2GO Maligaya is a larger ship that can carry 40% more twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) of cargo capacity compared to 2GO’s current fleet of vessels.

It will link Manila, Visayas, and Mindanao via its Manila-Cebu-Cagayan de Oro route.

With a top speed of 23.5 knots, it reduces steaming time from Manila to Cebu to only 17 hours making it the fastest cargo vessel in the Philippines today.

With the vessel’s addition, 2GO aims to further improve sailing schedule reliability to 95% on time.

“‘Maligaya’ is one of the defining qualities with which the Filipino is known for around the world. ‘Masaya’ is a happy feeling, but ‘Maligaya’ has a sense of deep joy and youthfulness. As a travel brand, we believe this is reflective of the kind of journey and service that you get from 2GO,” said Blessie Cruz, 2GO assistant vice president for Marketing. -MDM, GMA News
