Alberta Blue Cross®

Travel coverage in 2021

Home > Travel coverage in 2021

This post was originally published on February 18, 2021, and was updated for accuracy and reliability; however, due to recent updates, please refer to our latest travel blog for the most up-to-date information regarding travel insurance coverage and COVID-19.

As more and more Albertans are getting vaccinated against COVID-19 and the Government of Alberta is relaxing or lifting some of the public health guidelines, many people are beginning to think about and plan for international travel again.

The health and well-being of our customers is always our top priority. We want to do our part to ensure we help prevent the spread of COVID-19, so we are urging our customers to get vaccinated and follow all public health guidelines.

We also urge Albertans to follow all federal and provincial travel guidelines and advisories. Currently, the Government of Canada travel advisory is at a level three, which states that all Canadians should avoid non-essential travel outside of Canada until further notice.

Based on this advisory, Alberta Blue Cross ® is only selling travel insurance for trips within Canada.

We will resume selling travel insurance for international trips when the following two changes occur:

  • The current level three travel advisory is downgraded or completely removed.
  • The Canada-U.S. border is re-opened.

The advisory and border closure are reviewed by the federal government every 30 days. We are continuing to monitor the travel advisory and border reopening and will be there to support you and your travel coverage needs when the border is reopened.

If your travel coverage is part of your individual health plan and you choose to travel while an advisory is in place, any incidents related to COVID-19 will not be covered.

We recognize that some people may require out of country emergency medical coverage for “essential travel” and Alberta Blue Cross ® will continue to provide coverage to support our customers, including new travel plans as well as extensions for our individual health and group plan customers. This will include coverage for COVID-19 up to $5 million.

For more information regarding travel coverage, please visit our website at ab.bluecross.ca/travel/travel-insurance.php or you can also call our travel department at 1-800-394-1965 and select option four.

We will continue to keep our members informed about any updates to the travel guidelines and we look forward to serving your travel coverage needs once it’s safe to travel again.

Will we be getting a reduced monthly premium now that we are not longer covered for Travel? I am in Montana and have purchased US health care insurance through a US company. Please let me know what my new reduced premiums will be. Thank you, Brenda

I’m in Alberta and following the AHS practices. Will the premium be adjusted ?

Hi Joan, travel is one of many benefits that our customers have access to through their individual health plan. If my child travel to the united states to go to school (High School), will she still be covered under my plan ? Should I be getting any supplemental coverage ?

Hi Damigu, please call our travel line directly (1-800-394-1965 and select option 4) to provide more details about your plan and situation so that we can provide an answer. Thanks!

' data-srcset=

While I understand your position on not offering travel insurance, I believe it would be reasonable to consider reducing premiums for a service that has been discounted for such a lengthy time.

Hi Sandy, travel is one of many benefits that our customers have access to through their individual health plan. Currently our customers continue to access many other important services such as prescription, dental, vison and extended healthcare benefits. It is time you reduce our premiums!

Hi Terry, thank you for the comment we appreciate any and all feedback.

' data-srcset=

Will our premiums be adjusted to reflect the fact that there is an advisory against travel? The main reason we picked our plan is that it covered travel and this is a long time to pay high premiums for something we can’t use. We are considering cancelling if adjustments are not made.

Hi Judy, travel is one of many benefits that our customers have access to through their individual health plan. Currently our customers continue to access many other important services such as prescription, dental, vison and extended healthcare benefits. thanks for information,

I have an android but your brochure prompted me to take picture of my id cards. Good idea.

' data-srcset=

I totally agree with many others that have just expressed their feelings about the premiums we are paying for our coverage that we are not using. Definitely travel coverage is a huge part of our premium and the main reason we choose Blue Cross in the first place. Additionally, massage services were limited throughout the year due to shutdowns, another coverage that we have not been able to take advantage of. I would greatly appreciate Blue Cross looking at providing another reduction in our premiums for some period of time consistent with the inability to travel. Thank you.

Hi Shelley, thank you for sharing this. We greatly appreciate any feedback received and will ensure this is shared with the right team so we can learn and improve based on our member experiences.

' data-srcset=

Last year Alberta Blue Cross did reduce our premiums due to COVID 19 (for a few months ) due to not being able to travel as per direction from government and Health officials. Your wording “if you choose to travel” does not fit for people who are actually following government directives. We pay $300 per month for our retiree plan which does not really provide sufficient coverage for our health care needs as is never mind having to pay for travel insurance that we are not requiring at this point, again I repeat, due to following government and health directives. In fairness to their membership I think if Alberta Blue Cross “chose to”, could again reduce our premiums.

Hello Karen,

If you would like to review other plan options that don’t include travel coverage and can also reduce your monthly premiums, please contact us directly with your full name, contact information and member ID at [email protected] or call our team at 1-800-661-6995.

' data-srcset=

Can we buy travel insurance to to USA for April 1st to April 30th 2021 ?

Hi Robert, the Government of Canada’s travel advisories are still in place, so we are still not actively selling travel coverage. If you need coverage for an essential trip, you can call our travel department (1-800-394-1965 and select option four) for more information.

' data-srcset=

It is completely irresponsible for Blue Cross to continue charging full premiums due to reduced travel; in 2020 our retiree plan premiums were reduced for a short time Blue Cross has not responded to the many requests for premium reductions during travel advisory, and when will Blue Cross finally respond to the question of further temporary premium reductions.

Hi Harry, travel is one of many benefits that our customers have access to through their individual health plan. Currently our customers continue to access many other important services such as prescription, dental, vison and extended healthcare benefits. If you choose to travel, your travel benefits continue to provide coverage for travel emergencies (not related to COVID-19). Thank you for sharing your feedback, and we encourage you to contact us directly at 1-800-394-1965 if you have any additional questions or comments regarding your inquiry.

Hello Blue Cross!

I read your responses to the members’ requests and most of them seem to be cut and paste responses that never answer the questions! At the minimum, your should be refunding a portion of the additional travel insurance costs which is separate from the premium we pay for the other services. Please don’t send me your standard response! Thank you!

We respond to each message based on the information provided to us. Many of the member questions received require the need for more information that is often personal in nature and related to the member’s plan. For the protection of our members privacy we cannot request this publicly so our responses are often meant to continue the conversation offline via our customer services phone line.

If you would like to speak to our team about travel please contact us at 1-800-661-6995.

Hey there Bob,

' data-srcset=

The continued response is NOT an answer. Just repeating over and over again that “travel is one of many benefits” does not relate to the fact that “some of those many benefits” are not available. People are not asking to make it premium-free, but they are asking for a reduction, because ‘some’ (not all) benefits are not applicable. Another way of looking at it is to reduce the premiums by the amount that people now have to pay to get the additional coverage with another insurance company. However, it seems that if the government doesn’t require AB-BC to reduce their fees, they don’t care enough for their customers to voluntarily do so. Money/profit appears to be more important than customers.

Hello Gekke,

Please note, even though there is currently an international travel advisory in place, if you still choose to travel then you have up to $5 million of coverage for any emergency medical incidents not related to COVID-19.

The main reason I have blue cross retiree plan is for the travel insurance that I can’t use.If you dont want to cover us for covid give us a discount! I had no problem getting travel insurance through snowbirds that covered covid last year and it was less than blue cross If you are going to give the same reply as most people seem to be getting don’t bother. I am sure I am wasting my time but at least now I feel better!

Hello, Terry

I just looked back at the email you sent me that says “how we are adapting to travel in 2021” You aren’t adapting to anything, you are just charging us for something we cant use!!!

' data-srcset=

Hi, I see lots of comments about travel coverage which is important, especially to retired people, but during the Covid-19 I also have not used many other benefits;, restricting/eliminating dental cleanings, massage therapies, and various other beneficial but not emergent healthcare needs- so having such a high premium without consideration of the reduced payouts for services over the last year suggests you should maybe evaluate the expenditures over the last year and look at a reduced usage payout back to clients, like the vehicle insurance companies have done. This would certainly help all of the folks that have followed the rules and stayed out of public places over the last year. Just a suggestion as the car insurers have certainly been on the ball about this.

' data-srcset=

Very disappointed in the lack of response to reducing monthly fees for services we can’t use. Not what I expected in terms of payment for services from AC.

Hi Mike, we appreciate your feedback.

' data-srcset=

You are not listening. If travel restrictions are in place you need to refund a portion of our premiums. If we follow travel restrictions you are saving big money for reduced claims you need to provide reductions or refunds. There were no exclusions to type on illness when we signed up. Very poor canned comments to people like me who chose your service because of travel benefits. Not acceptable response Blue Cross Will be looking to move away from BC

Hello Wayne, thank you for taking the time to share your feedback.

' data-srcset=

Yup – you have a public relations nightmare here, Blue Cross. Our Auto insurer has sent us TWO rebates this past year because many people were no longer driving to work, nor leaving their homes to drive anywhere as often. Canned responses to customers only raise our ire, in case you haven’t noticed.

Best that your Board come up with some solution to this issue. There are MANY reputable health insurers in Canada.

' data-srcset=

The only way anything will ever change for the betterment of their customers is if the mainstream Media avidly take up this obvious issue & carry it & repeat to broadcast it for many many months to completely showcase this Blue Cross major flaw.

Film tourism is an exciting sector that is growing across the world. For any questions about regulations and permissions, the Alberta Film Commission would be the best contact for answering those questions.

Does Travel Alberta collaborate on film projects?

Travel Alberta does not collaborate on film projects outside of our current partnerships. If you are considering a certain region of Alberta, you can reach out to the local Destination Marketing Organization to pitch your collaboration opportunities. Otherwise, the Alberta Film Commission may be a good resource for you.

I have a sponsorship opportunity for Travel Alberta, who can I contact?

As the destination management organization of the Government of Alberta and a Crown corporation, the funding Travel Alberta receives from the provincial government is to be directed to destination and tourism product development and promotion to support Alberta-based tourism businesses. As such, we do not participate in sponsorships within the province.

Check out the tourism investment program to see if you’re eligible for grant funding. If you have questions, please reach out to the appropriate Destination Development Manager.

MnDOT selects 11 freight rail improvement projects to support local economic development

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Eleven freight rail projects will receive a total of $9.6 million in funding to improve freight rail service that supports economic development in different regions of the state, the Minnesota Department of Transportation announced today. The grants are provided through the Minnesota Rail Service Improvement program with funding approved during the 2023 legislative special session. “Improving Minnesota’s rail service gives local businesses more opportunities to compete in our global and national economy,” said Kelly Christenson, MnDOT Freight and Rail Programs Supervisor. “The increased number of grant applications we received this year demonstrates the importance of improving the freight rail infrastructure across the state.” The projects selected and funding amounts are:

  • Progressive Rail, Incorporated (Lakeville) – $468,137 to renew and improve eight bridge structures located on Progressive Rail's 97-mile system of Minnesota rail lines.
  • Northern Country Co-op (Lansing) – $1.9 million to develop a unit train loading facility and install storage bins to hold product until it can be loaded onto a train.
  • Meadowlands Farmers Co-op (Echo) – $1.1 million to construct 2,150 feet of new siding track to transport fertilizer by rail for a new agronomy center to be built adjacent to the siding.
  • Seven Rivers Intermodal Terminal LLC (Winona) – $511,446 to add 2,440 feet of track and two internal switches within an existing terminal to increase yard capacity and inbound shipments for distribution.
  • American Crystal Sugar Company (Crookston) – $960,000 to expand a packaging warehouse to cover the rail spur adjacent to the building, increasing the ability to access and load railcars.
  • Louisiana-Pacific Corporation (Watkins) – $1.5 million to install new railcar offloading stations with outdoor bulk storage and material handling upgrades.
  • DeRock Capital Group, LLC (Hector) – $246,000 to add a switch to the sidetrack, 350 feet of rail, ties, rail bed, and update two existing loading rail docks, and complete groundwork next to the rail spur to increase transloading capabilities.
  • City of Little Falls (Little Falls) – $613,600 to reconstruct and update an existing signal to an active warning railroad crossing, install ADA-compliant pedestrian crosswalks, and close an existing road crossing of the spur line to enhance safety and accessibility.
  • Sanimax USA, LLC (South St. Paul) – $400,000 to enhance the rail loading system to enable the direct loading of materials into railcars and installation of a conveyance system linking the truck loadout to the rail loading area.
  • Minnesota Northern Railroad Company (Crookston) – $1.56 million to develop land for a new industrial park and innovation center, including installing 2,478 feet of track and site preparation for an initial spur, a turnout from the track to the site, bin storage, and a crossing to the spur.
  • Twin Cities & Western Railroad Company (near Cologne) – $328,424 to extend the stub track over a recently acquired parcel and create a full siding with connections to the TC&W mainline enabling greater access and track capacity to support a large transload operation.

MnDOT received 19 applications requesting a total of $22.5 million for this round of MRSI grant funding. The Minnesota Rail Service Improvement Program began in 1976.

Costa Mujeres exudes natural beauty and fewer crowds.

Although not as well known as Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Cabo San Lucas or Puerto Vallarta, Costa Mujeres, Mexico is fast becoming a preferred luxury travel destination for American travelers and second home owners. Costa Mujeres has all the natural beauty of nearby Cancun – pristine white sand beaches and crystal clear turquoise waters – but with fewer crowds and less distractions. Its laid-back atmosphere, along with fresh seafood and delectable cuisine, makes it an ideal location for a tropical vacation.

The Rafa Nadal Tennis Academy is a world-class facility.

Located only 25 minutes north of the Cancun airport (which provides direct airlift from 126 airports including major cities such as New York, Toronto, Madrid and Paris), Costa Mujeres is the newest luxury destination for American travelers and second home owners. The less discovered Mexican region is gaining attention for its smaller crowds, ideal climate year round, new real estate inventory and beautiful beaches. In addition, Costa Mujeres offers visitors unique and exclusive experiences such as Playa Mujeres Golf Course by Greg Norman , an underwater art museum , diving and snorkeling in the Caribbean Sea and beautiful Chacmuchuch lagoon, the Rafa Nadal Tennis Academy , impressive culinary offerings from renowned chefs and more.

At the southern end of Costa Mujeres visitors can explore the Mayan ruins of El Meco, featuring a pyramid that may have served as a lighthouse long ago. Hop aboard a ferry to Isla Mujeres for a day full of many exciting adventures, including a turtle sanctuary and snorkeling.

Guests experience well-being luxury hospitality.

There have been multiple new hotel openings this past year including a world-class wellness clinic, SHA Mexico , which is a part of AB Living , a business group that specializes in health and well-being luxury hospitality and premium properties. SHA Mexico offers a transportation service with a private chauffeur to transfer guests from the destination of their choice. Recently AB Living announced its expansion of 1,000 new resort rooms and 182 residences to the region of Costa Mujeres with four more properties in development.

The St. Regis Resort & Residences will offer incredible ocean views.

The new properties that will continue to redefine the region as a luxury destination include Almare, a Luxury Collection All-Inclusive Resort (opening in late 2024, with residences to follow), The St. Regis, Costa Mujeres, Resort & Residences (opening in December 2025), the JW Marriott All-Inclusive Costa Mujeres Resort & Residences (opening in 2026), and W All-Inclusive Costa Mujeres, Resort & Residences (opening in 2026).

“We at AB Living are really leading the development of the Costa Mujeres region with our existing projects along with more in development,” says Alejandro Bataller, Vice President of AB Living. “In January 2024, we opened SHA Mexico, made up of 35 residences and 100 ocean front rooms and suites. Just next door, we are currently under construction with The St. Regis Costa Mujeres Resort & Residences, scheduled to open at the end of 2025, which will comprise 160 rooms and 84 luxury private residences.”

Guests can enjoy a premier golfing experience.

With its long white sandy beaches and refreshing Caribbean water – home to the largest coral reef in the northern hemisphere – Costa Mujeres offers guests an unspoiled utopia. Enjoy world-class golf and water activities, or simply relax under blankets of starry skies at nightfall. Costa Mujeres, Mexico is a natural beauty comparable to the culture, tradition and hospitality of its people who are influenced by the great Mayan legacy of many years ago.
