Hi, I’m Deana King

I traded in a long corporate executive career working with some of the most amazing teams for the best job ever: Designing bond-building travel experiences for clients eager to explore, together. Planning elaborate events and trips for the people I love to surround myself with—from friends and colleagues to my own family—helped me realize I have a knack for turning complicated logistics into a seamless (and laughter-filled!) travel experience. Today, I help individuals and group leaders plan their own trips of a lifetime, with ease. Business owners, club or membership organizations, friend groups, non-profit boards, and even family matriarchs or patriarchs work with me to design immersive trips that cultivate community and inspire awe, wherever they choose to go.

Wanderlust. It’s part feeling, part craving – a deep yearning to see, taste, touch a place far from home. Being grounded for now leaves ample time to daydream and plan for later. Slicing into a ripe Amalfi lemon, strolling through the Jardin Majorelle in Marrakech, eating warm croissants and taking romantic strolls under the moonlight in Paris…distinctly location-specific experiences that are well worth the wait.

What Our travelers Say

Don’t just take it from us, let our bespoke clients do the talking!

Marie-France is unlike any travel agent I’ve had… she was passionate about me having a trip of a lifetime. She was detailed, flexible, and followed up. You might want a great vacation, she wants you to have an extraordinary one.

Thank you so much for the incredible job you did planning our recent family trip to Machu Picchu, the Amazon and the Galapagos Islands. There were lots of things we wanted to see and do in a short amount of time, so couldn’t afford to miss a day, along the way. You listened to our wishlist, made great suggestions of other things we should see and do, and managed to fit everything in. Our trip ended up being one highlight after another.

Tailor Made Itineraries

Tailored perfectly for you, let's start planning, let's start planning, luxury escapes..

Tailor Made Itineraries – First class service – Attention to detail.

I’ve always l oved to travel. Travel inspires discovery—to incredible destinations, warm and friendly people, to delicious cuisines and breathtaking landscapes.  I design and plan tailored made itineraries based on what ignites your passion for travel.  I take care of all the details to save you the anxiety and stress, so you can focus on what matters most.

Start your luxurious escape

Exceptional group travel..

Are you ready for the ultimate getaway with your multi-generational family or better yet, friends as a group, where you forget about all your day-to-day worries while you laugh your way through an incredible destination?

Get your group together!

Unforgettable romantic escapes..

It’s time for you to reconnect with your partner and create moments of shared discovery that turn into forever-cherished memories. I’m here to design experiences that will have you falling in love all over again. Because that’s the magic of romance travel planned right.

Start your journey to reconnection

Memorable family escapes..

I enjoy helping families build and strengthen bonds through travel and shared experiences.   Exploring new  destinations together while immersing in the culture through authentic interactions.  I can alleviate the stress of research and planning for parents who just don’t have the time or the inclination to design an amazing family vacation.

Start your family experience!

Exceptional group travel..

Traveling with a group of friends, a destination wedding, a family reunion, or possibly an infinity group creates many amazing memories and shared experiences.  Organizing that group though requires many moving parts and a lot of attention to detail.  I will make the entire process seamless and stress free so all can enjoy the experience.

MEMORABLE FAMILY ESCAPES.

Maybe you’re the proud parent (or grandparent!) of kids growing up way too fast, and you want to sock away memories on a magical vacation that indulges their curiosity.

Hi, I'm Cathy

Your romance travel designer.

I love helping my clients reconnect through the wonders of travel – that’s because I’ve experienced first-hand the power travel has to bring couples closer together.  Read about the utterly romantic trip my husband and I took that changed our lives.

DESTINATION WEDDINGS.

Your dream wedding on location.

A destination wedding can often be less expensive than a traditional one, doing double duty as a vacation for your family and friends. The experiences you’ll share with them and your loved one will be remembered, always.

DESIGN YOUR ESCAPE.

Escapes guaranteed to take your breath away.

What makes a certain destination romantic? To me, it’s the intoxicating combination of charming atmosphere, indulgent food and drink, and plenty of secluded nooks and crannies to explore with your beau. Not every destination fits the bill – but when it fits? It’s magic. If you’re not quite sure where you want to spark your romance next, one of these utterly divine destinations may be just what you’re yearning for.

HONEYMOONS.

Honeymoons that will leave you breathless.

My husband and I were finally taking a vacation just for us (delayed honeymoon), without the kids. We booked a stay at a charming villa that included a private tour of the vineyard and a multi course gourmet lunch. As we settled into the intimate restaurant, in a little alcove that felt like it was built just for the two of us, we knew we were in for a treat.

ROMANCE TRAVEL.

Experience the luxury of custom-planned romance travel.

Imagine flying down the rolling hills of Tuscany on matching aqua blue Vespas …

Or maybe you—like my husband and I—are ready to finally reconnect to your partner, and you know there’s no better backdrop for re-sparking romance than an indulgent, intimate escape.

You don’t just deserve a romantic or vacation— you deserve an experience that sweeps you off your feet and shows your partner in a whole new light with our tailor made itineraries .

SELF BOOKING TOOL.

Book a preferred hotel.

Looking to plan a trip for a quick hotel stay in San Diego or a castle in Ireland? My self-booking tools are available for quick and easy trips – when clients know where they want to go and a consultation with a travel specialist isn’t needed.

Booking hotels through Amore Travel Designs’ self-booking tool still earns clients special amenities, including daily breakfast, hotel credits, complimentary upgrades, welcome amenities, and seasonal promotions. All bookings through these tools will be personally confirmed by Amore Travel Designs and I will always reach out to the hotels to ensure you’re taken care of.

Russia - Private Travel

Packed with Imperial palaces, domed cathedrals and superb museum collections, the historic cities of Russia cast a seductive spell.

East Russia offers the perfect off-the-beaten-path escape, particularly for nature-lovers hoping to catch sight of the famous black bears.

The pull of its fascinating history is what draws visitors to Russia, lured by the grand architecture, modern cities, luxury hotels, bucolic countryside and the stoic pride of its people. Moscow is the economic, cultural and political powerhouse, and the capital city since the 15th century. Beginning with the famous Red Square, you run the gamut of incredible architecture masterpieces and iconic UNESCO World Heritage sites. The Kremlin and its cathedrals have come to be the visual cue of the nation’s image, as has Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Private luxury tours will take you down pedestrianized Arbat Street with its shops, restaurants and street performers and along Tverskaya Street for some upmarket shopping. The Tretyakov Gallery – the most visited in Moscow – is the supreme spot for absorbing classical Russian art. Many visitors to Moscow also manage the Golden Ring, a route through nine ancient towns in the northeast that have managed to hold onto their 14th-century flavour. Sites here are mainly religious – UNESCO-listed cathedrals and monuments. The cities include Ivanovo, Kostroma, Pereslavl-Zalesskiy, Rostov, Sergiev Posad, Suzdal, Uglich, Yaroslavl and Vladimir. St. Petersburg – founded by Peter the Great and commemorated by countless artists and writers – is a seaside paradise. It was only founded in the early 1700s – fairly young compared to some of Eurasia’s other significant cities. Thrillingly, it is Russia’s cultural heart, filled with art museums, opera houses and ballet stages. The State Hermitage Museum is the largest in the world at more than 700,000 square feet, its 120 rooms visited by one million people every year. A visit to Russia isn’t complete without a taste of the fresh air. The Russian countryside is primarily made up of rolling, treeless plains called Steppes. Four climates zones make for an interesting melange of plant and animal species, not to mention the various sporting activities: skiing in Rosa Khutor, mountain climbing in Caucasus, white-water rafting Altai Republic and hiking around Lake Baikal.

After Travel Meltdowns, Amtrak and N.J. Transit Offer Plan to Fix Mess

Officials of the two transit agencies met in an impromptu meeting on Thursday called by New Jersey’s governor, Philip D. Murphy.

By Patrick McGeehan

Amid a torrent of criticism about the recent spate of chaotic commutes, officials of Amtrak and New Jersey Transit laid out a plan on Thursday to identify and fix the problems plaguing their operations.

The two railroads, which share the tracks of Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor from Pennsylvania Station in Manhattan to Trenton, N.J., pledged to scrutinize their infrastructure and equipment to investigate why they have performed so poorly in the last several weeks. The detailed plan came on the heels of an impromptu meeting on Thursday called by New Jersey’s governor, Philip D. Murphy.

Mr. Murphy, a Democrat who promised to fix New Jersey Transit’s operations if it killed him , said the series of disruptions had been “unacceptable.” Kevin Corbett, the chief executive of the transit agency, and Amtrak’s chairman, Tony Coscia, agreed.

“Our absolute commitment is to get stuff fixed,” Mr. Murphy said at the round-table meeting, held at his office in Newark.

The officials have not yet reached consensus on what is causing all the delays and suspensions of service to and from Penn Station in Manhattan, the nation’s busiest transit hub.

Most of the breakdowns have occurred in the most heavily traveled segment of the Northeast corridor, between New York and Newark. Some have clearly been caused by failures of Amtrak’s antiquated infrastructure. But others have involved New Jersey Transit trains’ getting caught up in the overhead electrical wires that provide power to them.

The two railroads had what Mr. Murphy called a “dysfunctional relationship” and a history of pointing fingers at each other. But they are now vowing to share the blame and root out their shortcomings in a cooperative spirit.

Their joint investigation will include checking the overhead wires more frequently and inspecting the mechanical arms that extend from the roofs of trains to contact those wires. They said New Jersey Transit would install high-resolution cameras to inspect those arms, known as pantographs, on its trains.

At the meeting, Mr. Coscia said that commuters and travelers should expect the railroads to be reliable. “We will fix these problems” and get to “a place where operations are much better than they have been,” Mr. Coscia said.

The summit came a month after Mr. Murphy sent an angry letter to Mr. Coscia and two days after New Jersey’s congressional delegation wrote to Pete Buttigieg, the transportation secretary, calling for an investigation into the recent breakdowns. The letter said the disruptions were “seriously undermining the quality of life for New Jerseyans and their families.”

One of those Congress members, Representative Frank Pallone Jr., a Democrat, has called on Amtrak to replace all the overhead electrical wires and signals along the corridor between New Brunswick and Penn Station.

Representative Mikie Sherrill, another Democrat from New Jersey, called on Thursday for New Jersey Transit to “pause and re-evaluate” a 15 percent fare increase that is scheduled to take effect July 1. Mr. Murphy, who controls the agency’s board of directors, said at the meeting that he would leave that decision to the board.

The train commute along the Northeast Corridor is a major political issue in the state because New Jersey Transit carries tens of thousands of daily commuters in and out of New York City. The agency runs many more trains along the tracks than Amtrak does, so any disruption of service there affects more of its customers, especially during rush hours.

On Monday evening, service was briefly suspended while Amtrak workers inspected the power lines in a tunnel under the East River in New York City. A New Jersey Transit train crew had reported that the lines were sparking, causing fears that they had been damaged.

The cause turned out to be chunks of concrete breaking loose from the ceiling of the tunnel, Mr. Corbett said. Service was restored but not before many commuters had their trips home disrupted.

That suspension came on the heels of other major rush-hour delays at Penn Station in the past month. Last Thursday, one of the hottest days of this year, an afternoon power failure left thousands of commuters stuck at Penn Station and on trains that had no air-conditioning. Last Friday morning, a disabled train caused delays of as much as an hour in and out of Penn Station.

Earlier that week, New Jersey Transit service into and out of Penn Station was suspended for about an hour and all Amtrak trains passing through the station were delayed because of overhead wire issues and a disabled commuter train on the tracks, train officials said.

space scientists 3D print LEGO bricks with meteorite dust to build astronaut homes on moon

3d printed ‘esa space bricks’ similar to lego blocks .

Scientists at the European Space Agency (ESA) produce 3D printed bricks similar to LEGO blocks using dust from a 4.5-billion-year-old meteorite. Dubbed ESA Space Bricks, these construction materials come out because the scientists are designing launch pads and shelters for astronauts who are visiting the moon as part of the Artemis program. They want to understand and test whether or not the materials astronauts will find in space could be used to construct buildings there. To find and review their discovery, they first 3D printed ESA Space ‘LEGO’ Bricks from the closest space material they could get on Earth, which is the meteorite dust.

LEGO-like space bricks made of meteorite dust

The space material on the moon is regolith, which NASA describes as ‘a layer of unconsolidated debris’. The issue is that there’s only a very small sample available on Earth, collected from the Apollo mission. The closest material next to it is meteorite. The scientists of the European Space Agency (ESA) grind them up into dust and mix them with a small amount of polylactide and regolith simulant.

The components produced are used to 3D print bricks similar to LEGO bricks , resulting in the series of ESA Space Bricks. The dust added to the mixture is around 4.5 billion years old. It was originally discovered in North-West Africa in 2000 and was classified as an L3-6. The meteorite dust is a brecciated stone which has many different elements incorporated within it, including large metal grains, inclusions, chondrules, and other stone meteorite elements.

Building test structures with 3D printed ESA Space Bricks

Aidan Cowley, ESA Science Officer, says that no one has ever built structures on the moon, so he and his team are working out both how to construct them and what materials to use to make them, given that they can’t source directly from the moon at the moment. ‘My team and I love creative construction and had the idea to explore whether space dust could be formed into a brick similar to a LEGO brick so we could test different building techniques. The result is amazing and whilst the bricks may look a little rougher than usual, importantly the clutch power still works, enabling us to play and test our designs,’ he says.

While the real houses and launch pads are expected to be built on the moon using materials found there such as regolith, it may be imperative for scientists on Earth to figure out if such components could even be made into building blocks. By testing building small-scale structures on Earth using the meteorite dust, their questions may be answered insightfully. So far, the scientists are able to work out the first phase through the 3D printed ESA Space Bricks that resemble LEGO blocks.

The scientists are fans of LEGO brick building, so it might not come as a surprise that they drew inspiration from this playful sphere. Following the important part in developing potential future infrastructure on the moon, 15 ESA Space Bricks will go on display in select LEGO Stores globally to help encourage kids to find out more about space travel and be inspired to build their very own moon shelters. The ESA Space Bricks will be on display in select LEGO Stores in the USA, Canada, UK, Germany, France, Denmark, Spain, and Australia plus the LEGO House in Billund, Denmark from June 24th to September 20th.

I quit teaching to become a luxury-travel advisor. Since making the transition, I've learned a lot and grown professionally.

  • Kaylee Stith left teaching to join The Travel Mechanic as a travel agent last year.
  • Stith leveraged her organizational skills from teaching for her new role in travel advising.
  • This article is part of " Trends to Bet Your Career On ," a series about trending professional opportunities.

Insider Today

Kaylee Stith is a travel agent at The Travel Mechanic , a luxury-travel agency in North Carolina. This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Stith, who left her full-time teaching job to become a luxury-travel agent last year. It has been edited for length and clarity.

Before I started travel advising, I worked as a middle-school special-education teacher in North Carolina.

I stumbled upon the travel-agent industry. I was following someone on Instagram who recently started her own Disney-specific travel agency. I love Disney, and when she announced that she was hiring an agent, I thought that would be a fun part-time job. I applied and made it through the first round. I didn't get hired, but I couldn't stop thinking about becoming a travel advisor.

After that, I started exploring on my own. I listened to podcasts about the industry and learned more from the American Society of Travel Advisors.

One day I was listening to " Trade Secrets ," a travel-agent podcast, when they interviewed Lauren Doyle, the president and owner of The Travel Mechanic, an agency based where I live in Raleigh, North Carolina. I filled out the form for prospective agents and interviewed, and I was offered a position on the team. I signed a contract on April 1, 2023, and left my full-time teaching role in June 2023.

Skills I transferred from my teaching career

Some of my skills transferred from teaching, like being organized and helping people. Because I came from a special-education setting, I was often the liaison between students and their teachers. Being a travel advisor is similar because you're connecting with your clients and interfacing with them.

But the transition was also a challenge, because I forgot what it feels like not to know what you're doing.

My dad is a commercial airline pilot, and I've been traveling my whole life and planning my own trips for a long time. I assumed I'd naturally slide into this role and automatically know how to do everything. But there's a lot to learn.

There were very practical things I had to learn, like how to use the customer-relationship-management system we put client information into, how to take payments, and how to make sure clients are signing off on the right terms and conditions — a lot of that was new to me.

How I make money as an advisor

I offer a complimentary consultation and discuss options with the client to ensure we're both a good fit. Then I charge a flat-rate planning fee. Some agents have a base amount, and depending on how complicated the trip is or how many people are going, they might charge more. Once the client pays the fee, I put their itinerary together.

I also make a commission on things like hotels and tour packages. Some suppliers will pay a decent commission; if you work on the higher end, you make a bigger commission. Commissions are usually paid out after the client has finished the trip.

Because I work with The Travel Mechanic, I get some leads, but I have to find most of them on my own. So a big part of this job is telling everyone I'm a travel agent. I'll mention it in conversations with people I meet because it's travel, it's fun, and people enjoy talking about that.

My clients have so far been in my circles. I've worked with several people from my church, friend groups, and family. Sometimes it's good to start with the people near you.

Have a niche when you're starting out

It's good to have a niche to present yourself as an expert in when starting out. My niches are Hawaii and the UK because they're what I know and love. My family loves Hawaii, and I've visited regularly since I was 9. I've also been to England many times. I studied abroad in college and lived in Bath for four months as a student.

The locations are similar in some ways because they're higher-ticket bucket-list destinations. They're also great destinations for first-time travelers who want to adventure out on a bigger trip but go somewhere that feels familiar.

Hawaii is still far away, but the driving and currency are familiar. Though England is also pretty far away, the language and culture are not that different from the US. Those are my two favorite destinations, and I do some Disney trips on the side.

Advice for prospective travel agents

Many people think this job is fun and relatively easy to get into. You don't need specific training, but it can be hard to get going. It's a marathon, not a sprint.

If you want to get into travel advising, I recommend starting part time or having another source of income before you get established and move to full time.

Also, do a lot of research. This will help you see if you're a good fit for the industry and find an agency you feel aligned with that will support you. If you're unsure where to start, visit Host Agency Reviews to research agencies near you.

While it's possible to go at it alone, starting with an agency is easier. Your commissions with an agency may be a bit lower, but an agency will offer advice and assist you when you're starting out with leads.

Lessons I've learned so far

I attended the annual Ensemble travel-agent conference in Las Vegas last year. I met with suppliers, tour operators, destination-management companies, and other agents. Everyone was welcoming and encouraging, which was a pleasant surprise. Because I'm an independent contractor, it'd be easy to think I'm competing with other people, but that isn't the case; there are enough clients to go around.

Also, I learned that it's OK that I'm not the perfect fit for everyone. I can be a perfectionist, but it's impossible to always get everything right. I had a potential client who contacted me about a honeymoon, and I felt like it was a great conversation, but she never got back to me. I couldn't stop thinking what did I do wrong? But I can't be the best fit for everyone. It's been a tough lesson, but I've learned and grown so much this past year.

June 27, 2024 – Longueuil , Quebec

Today the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne , Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, announced that Brampton-based company MDA Space will receive $999.8 M  to continue work on Canadarm3 and begin detailed design, construction and testing. This milestone marks the last steps to finalize the design, construction and testing of this sophisticated robotic system before delivering Canada's contribution to Gateway, the next major international collaboration in human space exploration.

As a small outpost orbiting the Moon, Gateway will be located one thousand times further from Earth than the International Space Station (ISS) and will be crewed for only a portion of the year, unlike the continuous presence of astronaut crews on the ISS . Canadarm3 will serve as a critical component and will be used to maintain, repair and inspect Gateway, relocate modules, enable science in lunar orbit, help astronauts during spacewalks and capture spacecraft visiting the station. Much like Gateway itself, Canadarm3 operations will be highly autonomous, minimizing the need for direct human intervention, representing a leap forward in spacecraft capability.

With hundreds of Canadian organizations expected to be involved in the Canadarm3 project, thanks to the application of Canada's Industrial and Technological Benefits Policy , Canada is supporting innovative small and medium-sized businesses and research organizations from across the country. In turn, these companies get to position their capabilities to support cutting-edge space-related activities, such as on-orbit servicing, refuelling of satellites, mission enhancement, orbital debris management and in-space infrastructure assembly. Canadarm3 is driving Canadian businesses and their technologies forward.

"This contract highlights Canada's commitment to the next chapter of lunar exploration. Building on the legacy of strategic investments in space robotics, Canadarm3 showcases our commitment to innovation. Beyond enhancing Canada's position of developing and retaining top talents and world-renowned innovators, this initiative supports high-quality jobs and opportunities for growth within the country's expanding space sector." - The Honourable François-Philippe Champagne , Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry
"Canadian robotics have played a critical and game-changing role in the assembly and maintenance of space systems and scientific research for decades. Our expertise is well-regarded and sought after internationally. The Canadian Space Agency is proud to live up to this rich legacy by developing a complex next-generation robotics system and contributing Canadarm3 to Gateway." - Lisa Campbell, President of the Canadian Space Agency
"We are entering an exciting period where Canadarm3 will take shape and come to life on our production floor. Canada's participation in the Artemis program reinforces and expands our national and industry leadership as a new era of space opens up. Leveraging technology derived from Canadarm3, MDA Space has introduced a new suite of commercial space robotics that will provide customers globally with access to the world's most flight-proven space robotics solutions and services." - Mike Greenley, Chief Executive Officer, MDA Space

Quick facts

Currently planned to launch no earlier than 2029, Canadarm3 will be composed of a next-generation large robotic arm, a small dexterous arm and a set of specialized tools.

Canadarm3 operations will be conducted entirely from Canada, marking a significant step forward in capability, and securing Canada's place among leading space-faring nations.

Over a 10-year period, Canadarm3 investments are expected to create and maintain more than 1,000 well- paying jobs in an industrial sector that is amongst the most innovative and R&D intensive.

In April 2024, MDA Space launched a suite of commercial robotics products and services derived from Canadarm technology. Two proposed commercial space stations, Axiom Station and Starlab Space LLC , have chosen Canadian space robotics for their ventures.

Committing Canadarm3 to Gateway ensures a bright future for Canada's space program by securing two astronaut flights to the Moon, including Jeremy Hansen's historic Artemis II mission, and allowing Canada to conduct cutting-edge research and technology development/demonstration that cannot be done on Earth.

US Workplace Safety Agency Proposes Protections From Extreme Heat

Reuters

By Daniel Wiessner

(Reuters) - The Biden administration on Tuesday unveiled a long-awaited proposal that would require many U.S. employers to protect 36 million workers from extreme heat.

The proposed rule from the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), which enforces workplace safety laws, would require employers to provide workers with water and shaded or air-conditioned areas to take breaks when temperatures at indoor or outdoor work sites reach 80 degrees Fahrenheit (27 degrees Celsius).

At 90 F, workers would be guaranteed 15-minute breaks every two hours and employers would be required to monitor workers for heat-related illness. When businesses hire new employees, the rule would mandate that their workload gradually increases to allow them to adjust to high temperatures.

Private employers already have a "general duty" to maintain safe workplaces, which can include addressing heat-related hazards. But Tuesday's proposal would for the first time establish specific protections from heat exposure, opening the door for OSHA to fine employers who flout the rule.

If finalized, the regulation will almost certainly face lawsuits from businesses and trade groups. Those challenges could be bolstered by a ruling issued last week by the U.S. Supreme Court eliminating the deference that courts owed to agency rulemaking.

OSHA, part of the U.S. Department of Labor, said that the proposed rule was designed to reduce work-related deaths and injuries caused by prolonged exposure to high temperatures.

"Workers all over the country are passing out, suffering heat stroke and dying from heat exposure from just doing their jobs, and something must be done to protect them,” said Douglas Parker, OSHA's head.

Advocates have for years called on OSHA to address heat hazards. The agency first said it was working on the rule in 2021.

Heat exposure on the job has killed more than 1,000 U.S. workers since 1992. From 2011 to 2020, there were nearly 34,000 cases where heat-related injuries caused employees to miss work, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Several U.S. cities experienced record-breaking heat in June, and the release of the proposed rule on Tuesday coincided with the beginning of a heat wave in California and other West Coast states. Many climate scientists have predicted that 2024 will be the hottest year on record.

The OSHA proposal does not apply to "sedentary" or remote workers, emergency-response workers, or employees at indoor job sites where temperatures are kept below 80 F. OSHA rules do not apply to government employers.

TSA checkpoints at Newark Liberty International Airport now equipped with new state-of-the-art 3-D checkpoint scanners to improve explosives detection in time for summer travel season

agency travel designer

NEWARK, N.J. – The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is prepared for the highest passenger volumes the agency has seen at airport security checkpoints nationwide during this summer’s travel season, which runs through Labor Day, and that includes individuals who are planning to fly out of Newark Liberty International Airport.

Since mid-May, TSA has seen multiple days break into the top 10 busiest days in the agency’s 22-year history. Typically, TSA had been screening approximately 2.5 million people per day nationwide, however since last month, the number of people screened has increased by several hundred thousand per day, with TSA officers screening more than 3 million individuals at checkpoints for the very first time.

“Here at Newark we already have seen a notable increase in checkpoint volume,” said Thomas Carter, TSA’s Federal Security Director for New Jersey. “We have been in close coordination with our airport, airline and travel partners, and we are more than ready to handle this summer’s increased travel volumes as we head into the July 4th holiday travel period,” he said.

“Knowing that travel volume will be high is why it is vital to give yourself plenty of time to park or return a rental car, check in with your airline to check bags and prepare for the security checkpoint. If you find yourself in a checkpoint line, travelers can save time by removing items from their pockets and placing them in a carry-on bag, instead of putting items directly into bins at the conveyor belt. My advice is to get into the airport two hours prior to your scheduled departure time.”

TSA is has installed eleven new computed tomography (CT) scanners in Terminal B in time for the summer travel season. These new state-of-the-art advanced CT scanners provide 3-D imaging that provide for TSA officers to enhance explosives detection capabilities for screening carry-on items.

“TSA is committed to getting the best technology to enhance security and improve the screening experience,” Carter said.  “Our officers’ use of CT technology substantially improves our threat detection capability at the checkpoint. The CT technology applies advanced algorithms for the detection of explosives, including liquid explosives and other threat items.”

The system applies sophisticated algorithms for the detection of explosives by creating a 3-D image that can be viewed and rotated 360 degrees on three axes for thorough visual image analysis by a transportation security officer. This new technology creates such a clear image of a bag’s contents that the system can automatically detect explosives, including liquids, by shooting hundreds of images with an X-ray camera spinning around the conveyor belt to provide TSA officers with the three-dimensional views of the contents of a carry-on bag.

It takes a few extra seconds for the TSA officer to view the image and rotate it to get a better understanding of its contents, however in most instances, rotating the image allows the TSA officer to identify an item inside the bag and clear it without a need to open it for inspection. Checkpoint CT technology results in fewer bag checks. However, if a bag requires further screening, a TSA officer will inspect it to ensure that a threat item is not contained inside.

As an added passenger convenience, with the use of these new CT units, travelers may now leave their laptops and other electronic devices in their carry-on bags along with their small 3-1-1 liquids .

Since traveler volume will be high this summer, it is even more important for travelers to come to the airport prepared to go through the security screening process. Passengers need to make sure that there are no prohibited items among their carry-on items. Prohibited items will result in a need for TSA officers to open and inspect a bag to determine what triggered the alarm. This process takes a few minutes and will slow down someone’s trip through the checkpoint.

When packing, it is recommended to start to pack with an empty bag, so that travelers are well aware of the contents of their bags. Prior to packing that empty bag, individuals can check TSA’s “What Can I Bring?” tool to know what is prohibited. Individuals who are heading to the beach, may wonder how to pack their sunscreen. Any liquids, sunscreen containers and alcohol over 3.4 ounces must be packed in a checked bag. Liquids, aerosols, gels, creams and pastes are allowed in carry-on bags as long as each item is 3.4 ounces or less and placed in one quart-sized bag . Each passenger is limited to one quart-size bag of liquids, aerosols, gels, creams and pastes.

It is important for individuals who own firearms to remember that they are prohibited to pass through security checkpoints, even if a passenger has a concealed carry permit or is in a constitutional carry jurisdiction. Passengers may travel with a firearm, but it must be secured in the passenger’s checked baggage; packed unloaded; locked in a hard-sided case; and declared to the airline when checking in at the airline ticket counter. If a passenger brings a firearm to the security checkpoint on their person or in their carry-on luggage, TSA will contact local law enforcement to safely unload and take possession of the firearm. Law enforcement may also arrest or cite the passenger, depending on local law. TSA may impose a civil penalty up to $15,000 when weapons are intercepted, and passengers will lose TSA PreCheck® eligibility.

TSA PreCheck® members should make sure that their known traveler number (KTN) is in their airline  reservation. It is essential that airline reservations have the passenger’s correct KTN, full name and date of birth so they can receive the program’s benefits. Those who fly with multiple airlines should ensure their KTN is updated in each of their airline profiles every time they travel. TSA PreCheck passengers are low-risk travelers who do not need to remove shoes, belts, 3-1-1 liquids, food, laptops and light jackets at the TSA checkpoint. TSA’s wait time standards for TSA PreCheck lanes are under 10 minutes and less than 30 minutes for standard lanes. Travelers may visit https://www.tsa.gov/precheck for more information about enrolling or renewing in TSA PreCheck and to find enrollment locations and pricing information for all TSA PreCheck enrollment providers.

“It is also important to remember that our TSA officers are working throughout the summer, including the upcoming July 4th holiday, so respect TSA and other frontline airport and airline employees,” Carter said. “Our officers along with all frontline airport and airline employees and local law enforcement, are working together to ensure safe and secure travel. Consider offering them a kind word of thanks.”

TSA also reminds travelers that starting on May 7, 2025, if you plan to use your state-issued ID or driver’s license to fly within the U.S., make sure you have a REAL ID or another acceptable form of ID. If you are not sure if you have a REAL ID, check with the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission .  For questions on acceptable IDs, visit TSA’s web site. “Put REAL ID on your summer to do list,” Carter recommended.

Travelers can contact TSA with questions may contact TSA by sending a text directly to 275-872 (“AskTSA”) on any mobile device or over social media by sending a message to @AskTSA on X or Facebook Messenger. An automated virtual assistant is available 24/7 to answer commonly asked questions, and AskTSA staff are available 365 days a year from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET for more complicated questions. Travelers may also reach the TSA Contact Center at 866-289-9673. An automated service is available 24/7.

TSA encourages all passengers to remain vigilant. If You See Something. Say Something®.

Staying in a 'floating ryokan' in Japan: Can travelling with a bespoke agency make a trip better?

We are so accustomed to self-organised vacays to Japan but as bespoke travel company Intriq Journey’s new small group concept shows, sometimes group travel can be rewarding too.

Guntu is a meticulously constructed ship that emulates a ryokan through its interior design. (Photos: Guntu)

This audio is generated by an AI tool.

agency travel designer

The ship’s horn sounds, indicating we are about to set sail. Up on the top deck of the elegantly minimalist Guntu  – a “floating ryokan” that plies the Seto Inland Sea  – passengers have gathered to enjoy the picturesque scenery as the ship pulls away from its home dock at the Bella Vista Marina in Hiroshima, Japan.

But unlike the air of cordial politeness that one might expect among a group of strangers who happen to be voyaging on the same vessel, the atmosphere feels more like a reunion of old friends.

Champagne corks pop in the background as passengers clink flutes and enthusiastically catch up with each other. Even I –  a solo traveller –  spotted several familiar faces I had travelled with previously.

This congenial cruise vibe is not by chance but rather by the design of its organisers, bespoke travel company Intriq Journey.

agency travel designer

With its reflective gray-silver exterior that reflects the inky blue waters of the inland sea, it is easy to see why this striking sea craft is a bucket-list destination for the well-heeled. Yet, the Yashushi Horibe-designed luxury vessel is also notoriously difficult to secure passage on, in part because there are only 19 rooms, each of which come with enviably indulgent sea views.

So, to solve this supply shortage for its eager clientele, Intriq chartered the entire ship for one of its newly launched  Intriq Signatures luxury small group tours.

With group sizes capped at just 16, this concept aims to make even the most elusive experiences (like a highly coveted two-night cruise on a floating hotel) more accessible to its travellers.

This is how I found myself, at the invitation of Intriq to experience how a small group trip can actually elevate one’s journey, happily exchanging travel adventures with past travel companions and also new friends I had just been introduced to.

agency travel designer

Right away, I am struck by the value add-factor of being among experienced globetrotters, many of whom have previously travelled with Intriq on bespoke trips. Comprising travellers mostly from the region including Singapore, Hong Kong and Indonesia across a range of ages from working millennials to comfortably retired businessmen and professionals, it is clear most of us have visited Japan multiple times over the years.

No surprises then that the conversation is excellent, as are their travel tips that I hastily try to memorise for future travels. For instance, a couple with an affinity for Japanese artisanal crafts recount their tales of visiting car museums and brush factories. I bond with another traveller who has vast experience visiting independent ryokans across Japan and has a passion for the local seafood.

Additionally, besides benefiting from economies of scale, such as organising private charters or engaging guides who are experts in their fields, a travel concierge also accompanies the group on every Intriq Signatures trip. The role of this specialist is to smooth out small travel issues that may arise and to watch out for the travellers’ well-being. For example, our travel concierge gives us Vitamin C supplements and somehow manages to procure an eyewash when I mention an eye irritation that has been plaguing me.

agency travel designer

Minor snafu averted, I can concentrate on more important things, like savouring the nosh on board the Guntu (pronounced: Gan-tsu) which is excellent and devised to take one on a culinary journey during the sailing. Focused on the best seasonal ingredients sourced from the Setouchi region, there is impossibly fresh catch from the Seto Inland Sea, where much of Japan’s seafood is sourced from as well as melt-in-your-mouth wagyu and locally produced somen noodles and Shodoshima island grown olives.

The ingredients can then be prepared in just about every way imaginable from being slow grilled on a binchotan to being simmered in a flavourful soup stock. There is also crisp tempura, moreish stews and of course, sushi or sashimi. That said, the latter is probably best enjoyed at the ship’s cosy six-seater sushi bar, which is helmed by a chef who has trained with sushi master Nobuo Sakamoto of the sushi restaurant Nobu at Awajishima.

Cuisine aside, the meticulously constructed ship emulates a ryokan through its interior design. For example, up to five different types of local wood were used to create the wood-panelled interiors reminiscent of classic Japanese architecture. (Fun fact: Due to potential fire hazards, the shipbuilders had to get special approval to use so much wood on a ship and incorporate additional safety measures during the construction.)

A personal favourite is the open air ofuro bath with hinoki cypress tubs that offer sweeping views of the inland sea. It is undoubtedly a magical way to enjoy the panorama of the open waters.

agency travel designer

One essential element of a cruise is of course its day excursions that allow guests to stretch their legs, shake off cabin fever and be immersed  – however briefly  – in the local environment. To ensure this voyage would be unique to Intriq, the team specially crafted an itinerary to include stops at lesser known islands.

For instance, instead of stopping at the more famous “art islands” of Naoshima and Teshima, we anchored at Inujima. With a population of about 30 people, this island has been given a new lease of life through the conversion of an old copper refinery into the Inujima Art Museum, which is part of the Benesse Art Site Naoshima. The latter is of course arguably best known for its giant pumpkin sculptures by artist Yayoi Kusama, which are displayed on the island of Naoshima.

agency travel designer

In contrast, on Inujima, the element of surprise is on our side since no one has been here before. We are merely told it is meant to be a commentary on industrialisation and modernisation. But until we walk through an unlit, winding underground passageway with our only source of illumination from a single rooftop skylight reaching us due to the ingenious placement of multiple mirrors, this theme is perhaps too large and abstract to grasp.

Maybe, I ponder, this is about how our basic needs, like light, can already be found in nature and that the trappings of technology are often extraneous. After this moving visit, our chatty group is uncharacteristically silent as we ponder deep thoughts.

Luckily, there are two more nights to go after we (reluctantly) disembark the Guntu. To complement this contemporary, floating hotel experience, the next leg of our trip takes us to Sekitei, a traditional ryokan in Hatsukaichi, Hiroshima which has been awarded 5 Red Pavillions on the Michelin Guide.

agency travel designer

A 40-minute drive from Hiroshima city, this picturesque ryokan is situated atop a hill at the edge of the inland sea and overlooks the iconic Miyajima Shrine known for its “floating” red torii gate  – though we are admittedly too far to see it clearly.

Unlike the communal vibes of the cruise, this is a much more private stay with intricately plated kaiseki meals served in the rooms. This allows one the headspace to emulate the Japanese penchant for quiet contemplation and to savour the fleeting beauty of the passing microseasons, like the flowers at the peak of the bloom in early summer.

But, I quickly realise while all this solitude is nice, having fellow travellers to share in these experiences is priceless too. So the next morning, I am genuinely happy when another traveller invites herself to my table while I savour my elaborate Japanese breakfast. Clearly, she feels the same way too.

NASA is fostering continued scientific, educational, and technological developments in low Earth orbit to benefit humanity, while also supporting deep space exploration at the Moon and Mars. As the agency transitions to commercially owned space destinations closer to home, it is crucial to prepare for the safe and responsible deorbit of the International Space Station in a controlled manner after the end of its operational life in 2030.

NASA announced SpaceX has been selected to develop and deliver the U.S. Deorbit Vehicle that will provide the capability to deorbit the space station and ensure avoidance of risk to populated areas.

“Selecting a U.S. Deorbit Vehicle for the International Space Station will help NASA and its international partners ensure a safe and responsible transition in low Earth orbit at the end of station operations. This decision also supports NASA’s plans for future commercial destinations and allows for the continued use of space near Earth,” said Ken Bowersox, associate administrator for Space Operations Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters in Washington. “The orbital laboratory remains a blueprint for science, exploration, and partnerships in space for the benefit of all.”

While the company will develop the deorbit spacecraft, NASA will take ownership after development and operate it throughout its mission. Along with the space station, it is expected to destructively breakup as part of the re-entry process.

Since 1998, five space agencies, CSA (Canadian Space Agency), ESA (European Space Agency), JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency), NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration), and State Space Corporation Roscosmos, have operated the International Space Station with each agency responsible for managing and controlling the hardware it provides. The station was designed to be interdependent and relies on contributions from across the partnership to function. The United States, Japan, Canada, and the participating countries of ESA have committed to operating the station through 2030. Russia has committed to continued station operations through at least 2028. The safe deorbit of the International Space Station is the responsibility of all five space agencies.

The single-award contract has a total potential value of $843 million. The launch service for the U.S. Deorbit Vehicle will be a future procurement.

In its 24th year of continuously crewed operations, the space station is a unique scientific platform where crew members conduct experiments across multiple disciplines of research, including Earth and space science, biology, human physiology, physical sciences, and technology demonstrations not possible on Earth. Crews living aboard station are the hands of thousands of researchers on the ground having conducted more than 3,300 experiments in microgravity. Station is the cornerstone of space commerce, from commercial crew and cargo partnerships to commercial research and national lab research, and lessons learned aboard International Space Station are helping to pass the torch to future commercial stations.
