Planning time for fishing during an Alaska cruise could, potentially, be difficult because the fishing schedule needs to match the docking and departing schedule of your cruise ship. However, cruise passengers looking to cast a line while in Alaska don’t have to worry much because many charter options along the way will make planning easier.

There are two primary routes for cruise ships and both generally embark from either Seattle, WA or Vancouver/Victoria Canada. Each offer something different for the fishing lovers on board and will let you experience some of the best Alaska fishing possible.

You’ll typically have 4-6 hours to explore a port, but that can certainly vary. The local charters understand that you have a lot to do in a short amount of time – and you’ll want to be sure to let them know that you’re part of a cruise.

The two primary cruise ship routes and ports

The inside passage.

Ports include: Ketchikan , Juneau , Haines , and Skagway .

The Gulf Coast Package

Ports include: Ketchikan , Juneau , Skagway , A Hubbard Glacier excursion, College Fjord, Whittier , and Seward .

It’s an important note that not every ship will dock at every port (so check your trips ports) and this list of ports is not complete. It does show you the general lay of the land and will get you started in identifying options for fishing along the way.

NOTE: The Inside Passage is generally a seven-day cruise, and you follow the same path back as you traveled going out. You start at Seattle or Vancouver, and you end at Seattle or Vancouver. That's a big difference from the Gulf Coast route which does not return you to the city from which you embarked. It leaves you either in Whittier or Seward, and from there you continue on your own.

Ketchikan, Alaska Fishing Charters

A Ketchikan cruise ship fishing charter should be near the top of your list when considering which port to setup a fishing excursion out of. It's known as the Salmon Capital of the World, and Ketchikan offers some of the best fishing if you want to fish for Salmon in Alaska . In Ketchikan, you can expect to have access to all five salmon species plus other species.

Alaska Strike Zone Sportfishing sails out of Knudson Cove Marina and offers 4-hour, 6-hour, or 8-hour fishing trips for Salmon, Halibut, or both. Ketchikan is home to all five species of Pacific Salmon and the calmer waters are ideal for Salmon and Halibut. There is also a large population of Rockfish here too. All are drawn in by the bait fish who love the calmer and shallower waters of the Inside Passage.

Baranof Fishing Excursions is another excellent option for those who are looking for Salmon or Halibut fishing options while in Ketchikan. They sail out of Baranof Marina, and their trips range from 5-6 hours. You have access to Salmon, Halibut and Rockfish. They work with cruise ship passengers and will meet you at your dock, outfit you and get you on a boat so that you are fishing almost as soon as you dock! All excursions are guided so even someone who has never fished before should feel some tight lines and enjoy a day of fishing.

Juneau, Alaska - The State Capital

Another outstanding port for your cruise ship fishing charter is Juneau . Halibut & Salmon are the primary targets but there are also opportunities for a short fly-out to freshwater fly-fishing for Steelhead, Trout, Dolly Varden & Salmon as well. The fishing season is generally May through September and some of of the best fishing in Juneau is in July, but early in the year will give you access to the big King Salmon . In the late season you have access to Silver Salmon and in between are the Pinks and Chum Salmon. The Halibut and Rockfish are here all year round.

You’ll notice that each of the highlighted charter options below also offer wildlife viewing options like whale watching. Be sure to take advantage of that exciting opportunity here.

Three Juneau charter options to put you on the big fish include

The Local Guy - Local Native and Coast Guard Captain, the Local Guy offers customized and Personal charters for whale watching, fishing, and wildlife viewing. The Local Guy is certified via Whale Sense for wildlife viewing and whale safety. Juneau is a prime location to view a variety of big-ticket wildlife from orcas and humpbacks to porpoise and sea lions. Also, local is good. The captain was raised here and knows these waters and how to fish them. He offers a range of charters for fishing from 4-8 hours. He is flexible with customized trips.

Moore Charters - Offers Halibut and Salmon package or you can fish for only Salmon or only Halibut. They specialize in fishing programs for cruise ship passengers. In addition to fishing, you can book a whale watching tour too.

Best Damn Charters - Offers 1/2 and 3/4 day fishing trips for Salmon, Halibut, and Rockfish. They also offer whale watching tours too.

Skagway Port Overview

Usually the third port of call is Skagway, which is an old gold mine town. You can book fishing charters here, but this is a much better destination for land explorations. Visit the Klondike Gold Rush National Park or the Jewell Gardens .

While some of the Inside Passage cruises may spend a day in Glacier Bay, you are likely half way through your cruise at this point. The return to your port of call is a reverse of the adventure thus far.

Cranberry Creek Lodge

Additional Ports on the Gulf Cruise Packages

For many cruise lines, the Gulf Cruise Package will follow the Inside Passage route but after Juneau or Skagway, you head into the gulf for a stop at Whittier and then onto Seward. This is a seven-day cruise, and your cruise ends in Seward, AK. The Inside Passage cruise is also seven days, but you go out for 3 1/2 days and then return. The advantage of the Gulf Cruise is that you cover more territory and you can set it up so that you connect with a land-based tour that gives you an enjoyable experience in Alaska.

Whittier, Alaska Fishing Charters

Whittier Marine Charters is an excellent charter for marine fishing. Congratulations, you are in Barn Door Halibut Country now, and Whittier Marine Charters can put you on the big fish. They do salmon and halibut fishing, and you often fish for bottom fish between fishing grounds.

Crazy Rays Adventures is another good option in Wittier. They offer a variety of adventures from sightseeing to fishing for Salmon and big Halibut. This is Prince William Sound, and it is some of the best Halibut and Salmon fishing in the world. You are fishing in the shadow of glaciers and on water that is just glass-flat. The shallow, cooler water draws in the big Halibut, and the Salmon and baitfish are an excellent meal for these big fish.

Seward, Alaska - World Class Halibut fishing

For those of you who love to fish, Seward is the southern side of the Kenai Peninsula, and this can mean world-class Salmon, Rainbow Trout , and Dolly Varden fishing. However, Seward sits along Resurrection Bay, which is one of the best places in the world to fish for big Barn Door Halibut. Now, Halibut can hit the 1,200 pound mark and trust me that you don't want to mess with that. Try a 300 to 500 pound Halibut because that is what you have here. There is also plenty of Salmon in these waters all staging to enter the local rivers and you can always opt to fish freshwater too. It is a fantastic adventure as Seward gives you access to world-class saltwater fishing and world-class freshwater fishing.

Miller's Landing Lodging & Fishing Charters is a good option for saltwater fishing while in Seward. They offer both Salmon and Halibut Charters and have the experience to help you find, battle, and land the big fish. They offer both guided and self-guided fishing adventures.

There are plenty of charters that welcomes anglers of all ages (Miller's Landing is one). However, the good news if fishing isn’t for the whole family is that Seward is a remarkable town with plenty of things to do from fine dining to shopping or land adventures like Exit Glacier.

Alaska Cruises - What are Your Best Options for Cruising and Fishing?

As you can see, cruise passengers will have a great fishing adventure hitting the four-hour charters on the shorter Inland Passage cruises. Of course, if one really wants to experience the thrill of fishing Alaska, you gain more with the Gulf Cruise. This is because you get off the boat in Wittier or Seward and you can fish as long as you want. You can book an Alaska fishing guide and fish freshwater in fabled rivers like the Kenai River (it's just a 2-hour car ride from Seward). That's 100% doable. You can also head inland and visit places like Homer, Alaska the Halibut Capital of the World.

We can’t answer the question for you…but, the reality is that either route leads to great fishing.

How To Find The Best Alaska Fishing Trips

Experience the ultimate adventure on Alaska fishing trips. Learn about salmon fishing in Alaska, Alaska crabbing and the best places to fish in Alaska.

Alaska’s pristine waters teem with tasty fish. Whether you want to reel in a king salmon or try your hand at crab fishing, the Last Frontier is the place. Alaska fishing trips make it easy by providing the gear, some sage advice, and the ability to buy a fishing license ($25). On select adventures, you can have your catch prepared and served alongside local sides like warm sourdough bread. Custom packing and shipping is also available. Search our  Alaska shore excursions  to find Alaska fishing trips and charters.

Halibut Fishing In Alaska

The Pacific halibut is one of the most sought gamefish found in Alaska waters. They can grow huge, sometimes over eight feet and swim on their sides. Nicknamed “barndoors” because of their heft, Pacific halibut are packed with deliciousness. One of the best halibut fishing areas in Alaska is  Icy Strait Point , where you are taken via cruiser to a scenic local spot to drop your line.

The best time for halibut fishing in Alaska is mid-May through mid-September, nicely lining up with cruise season.

Salmon Fishing In Alaska

In search of salmon? You’ve come to the right place. Alaska is renowned for salmon fishing and during peak run, the rivers and streams are packed (quite literally) to the gills. The five major species of wild salmon fill Alaska’s sparkling waters—king, sockeye, coho, pink and chum—between May and September. Coho (silver) salmon pack the coastal waters from June through August, peaking for a month starting in mid-July. Sportfishing charters typically depart around 6:30 a.m. and return between 5 and 6 p.m., though half-day options are available.

Alaskan Crab Fishing

Alaskan king crab does not come easy. Commercia Alaska crabbing is one of the most dangerous jobs in the country and so perilous it is spotlighted on the reality TV series, “Deadliest Catch.” Find out if you’re up for the job as you join experienced crab fishers on the  Aleutian Ballad , a vessel once used on the show.

The shared personal stories are the real catch! This educational activity leaves from Ketchikan and remains in the Inside Passage’s calm waters, so don’t worry about rough seas. Read more about the  Bering Sea Crab Fisherman’s Tour .

When Is Crab Season In Alaska?

Alaskan king crab fishing takes place in fall and winter, with the peak between October and January.

Fly Fishing In Alaska

Whether you’re a seasoned fisher or an absolute novice, Alaska fly fishing connects you deeply with nature. Take a classic floatplane to a quiet stretch of water—chosen by an experienced guide based on current conditions. With rod in hand, you’ll discover the pleasure of fishing in Alaska’s wilderness. If you're a first-timer, look for a trip with hands-on instruction—though even the more experienced can benefit from tips.

Where Can You Find The Best Fishing In Alaska?

Fishing the kanai river    .

The Kenai River is a fish-filled glacial river that’s popular with anglers looking to reel in a huge king salmon. So popular, in fact that during certain times of year on certain parts of the river, hundreds of anglers descend to its banks. There are ten separate runs of various salmon. In July, it fills with kings and sockeye and August and September bring the silver salmon or the pink salmon (during even years).

Homer, Alaska Fishing

Take your pick, anglers: Casting a line in  Homer  is easy, affordable and, at the manmade lagoon stocked with king and coho salmon near the Small Boat Harbor, even wheelchair-accessible. Visitors with deeper pockets can book charter boats from Homer Spit. The Halibut Fishing Capital of the World nets almost three million pounds of the flatfish annually—18 percent of U.S. commercial landings. In 2015, the community launched the Halibut Festival in mid-September, honoring fishing traditions in Homer.

The Salmon Capitol

Ketchikan  is called the Salmon Capital of the World, and for good reason: all five different species of salmon swim its waters. Anglers shouldn’t miss the chance for a sportfishing excursion to hook a wild salmon—or another of Alaska’s iconic game fish, including halibut, cod or rockfish. Local fishermen offer small boat charters daily, and most can arrange to have your fresh catch smoked and processed to be sent back home.

Check out one of our favorite  salmon fishing excursions around Ketchikan .

Seward, Alaska Fishing

Seward  also boasts all five species of salmon, but it teems with other alluring fish such as halibut, rockfish, and lingcod. From June to September, there are saltwater combo Alaska fishing trips. Feeling competitive? Time your Alaska cruise to coincide with the mid-August Seward Silver Salmon Derby, one of the state's oldest and largest angling competitions. It sells all the fish, and the proceeds go toward conservation.

An Alaska fishing trip is a blast from start to finish. Bond with fellow adventurers. Feel at peace with nature as you wait for that telltale pull. Book  Alaska cruises  to experience the best fishing in Alaska.

Fly Fishing on Your Alaska Cruise

Introduction.

If you have an Alaskan Cruise planned, seize the opportunity and try some Alaskan fly fishing! If you are coming to Southeast Alaska for work or play, there are multiple options in the different ports of call that will put you on fish. Alaska’s Panhandle has something to fish for from May through the end of September and the streams and beaches are uncrowded and pristine.

Whether you are looking for a fully guided trip or a DIY adventure, here are your options in each town.  To help with what to use, there are seasonal recommendations at the end of this article that list out the best flies and beads to use during the time you will be here.  Please note that when traveling to Alaska to fly fish make sure you leave felt soled boots at home.  Felt is illegal in Alaska and you don't want to get a hefty fine on your vacation.

*Please note that this article is to help you find outfitters and provide contact information to get you in touch with the correct people.  We are not directly affiliated with these outfitters and guides.  When booking a trip please call the outfitters directly as we are unable to answer specific questions regarding their operations.*

Ketchikan offers some great fishing opportunities for trout and salmon. For the DIY angler, there is great fishing available via the road system. Just a short drive south of town (approx 8 miles) lies the Ward Creek system.  Ward Creek flows from Ward Lake and there are numerous access points along the creek starting at the lake and ending in Ward Cove. Throughout the spring, summer and fall, there are opportunities to fish for salmon, trout and Dolly Varden.  This system is easily accessible either by rental car or taxi cab.

If a guided trip is of interest, Ketchikan has a variety of options. These include road system walk & wade trips as well as all-inclusive fly out trips to Misty Fjords and other parts of the Tongass National Forest. The Hook Up Guide Service offers everything from gear rentals to fly out trips.  For more info on the trips they offer check out The Hook Up Guide Service , shoot an email to [email protected] or call them at 907-247-1305.

Sitka has some decent DIY access to roadside streams and estuaries. Depending on the season, there are opportunities to fish for salmon, trout, and Dolly Varden. Occasionally, rockfish can even be found off of the rocks in the salt. May and June will see most anglers fishing for trout and Dollies in the estuaries of Starrigavan Creek, Indian River and Sawmill Creek. Most streams along the road system are closed to salmon fishing. Fly fishing for salmon takes place along the beaches and estuaries of these same streams from July-September. During this time, angler’s seeking trout should look to fish egg patterns and beads behind spawning salmon in the streams that are open to fishing. It is a good idea to check the local regulations before venturing out freshwater fishing.

There are several guide services to choose from in Sitka. The two most notable are Classic Casting Adventures and Sitka Alaska Outfitters. Classic Casting Adventures offers both half and full day boat out trips and full day fly outs. This is an all-inclusive trip so gear and waders are provided. Sitka Alaska Outfitters offer a roadside fishing trip in addition to the boat and fly out trips. Gear is also included. To check out these guide services visit Classic Casting Adventures , Sitka Alaska Outfitters and Sitka Fish.

Juneau offers a wealth of DIY roadside fishing usually starting in May and running through mid to late September.  Some of these fisheries are very easy to access while others will require renting a car for a day.  Whether renting a car or taking a cab, most of the DIY fishing is quite straight forward and the fishing areas are easily accessed. There are no fly-fishing gear rentals in Juneau so anglers will need to bring their own rod, reel and waders.

Car rentals are available right at the cruise ship dock. Avis, Budget and Enterprise all have rentals available near the terminal known as the AJ Dock. Once you have your rental, cruise on out to Alaska Fly Fishing Goods and we’ll help you come up with a plan for the day and get you the flies you need.

Sheep Creek is a very productive inter tidal creek that has Dolly Varden, chum salmon, a few pink salmon and a big run of silver salmon. It is only 5 miles from the cruise ship docks and is an easy taxi ride away.

For a guided walk and wade trip check out Tidewater Fly Fishing. They offer Half Day and Full Day guided trips on the road system and all gear is supplied. Check out their program at www.tidewaterflyfishing.com or contact [email protected].

SEAK Outfitters offers boat-based fishing trips for salmon that they can tailor to each individual group.  Because this is a boat-based trip space is limited, especially for fly anglers.  This is a great option for two buddies to have a killer day close to town!  Email [email protected] or call 907-723-9204 for more information.

Undisclosed Excursions is the other boat-based operation for you fly fishing excursion.  These trips can be longer if your port time allows.  Email [email protected] or call 907-982-9674 for more information.

Alaska Anglers Club can offer both fly casting and spin casting for salmon in the saltwater. They specialize in fishing the local beaches for pink, chum and coho salmon. Email: [email protected] or call Nick Milanzi @ 760-484-8530.

For a guided fly out trip in Juneau checkout Bear Creek Outfitters. They offer all-inclusive fly out trips in both half day and full day options.  Bear Creek’s trips offer the opportunity to fish for salmon, trout or Dolly Varden, all depending on the season.  For more info check out www.juneauflyfishing.com, email [email protected] or call 907-723-2683.

Skagway/Haines

Unfortunately, Skagway offers little in the way of freshwater fishing.  For the adventurous soul wanting to take a hike above town, the Dewey Lakes offer good DIY fishing for small resident Brook Trout.

For a guided trip you’ll need to make an easy commute over to the nearby town of Haines. Fly Guides of Haines offers guided walk & wade half day and full day excursions. Their trips include rods, waders, flies and tackle. To get to Haines from Skagway, there is a shuttle ferry that runs multiple times a day. The trip takes approximately 45 minutes, and your guide will meet you at the ferry.

Good fishing for Dolly Varden in Haines starts in late April and continues throughout the summer and into the fall. Large number of sockeye and pink salmon start to return in late June and peak in mid to late July. Silver salmon start running in late August and really pick up in September and October.

In addition to the vehicle-based trips, Fly Guides offers a fly out trip via a Cessna 180 equipped with Tundra Tires. This trip will take you to areas hardly ever seen or fished by anglers. For more information call (907) 209 0816 or visit Fly Guides - Haines, AK

Hoonah/Icy Strait Point

Hoonah is a relative newcomer to the cruise ship scene and is quickly gaining popularity as a destination for its beauty and authentic nature.  Located on the northern end of Chichagof Island, Hoonah has access to some good beach fishing for Dolly Varden in May and June and then pink salmon along with Dolly Varden in July and August. Silvers arrive in September to round out the season.

For the angler looking to be guided, check out Game Creek Guides. Game Creek Guides takes anglers to nearby streams and estuaries to fish for coastal cutthroat trout, Dolly Varden as well as pink, chum, and silver salmon when in season. This is a great way to fish some of the best streams in Southeast Alaska without having to worry about bears! Game Creek Guides offers trips for anglers coming up on a cruise and for the non cruiser alike. Contact Lucas Clark (907) 321-9145 or go to www.gamecreekguides.net

Hoonah does have some really good stream fishing for the adventurous DIY anglers. Vehicles and boat rentals are available through Icy Strait Lodge. Two words of caution for DIY anglers. A sizable portion of the land in proximity to Hoonah is private native land and should not be trespassed on. Check with Huna Totem Corporation for details. Chichagof Island is also home to a sizable population of coastal brown bears and caution should be used when fishing the streams.

alaska cruise excursions fishing

If visiting S.E. Alaska is part of your summer plans or routine, fly-fishing is a great way to experience a little bit of what our fine state has to offer.  In fact, if you wanted you could easily plan a fly-fishing outing in each port you visit!  Southeast Alaska is full of great fishing and the streams are uncrowded, to the point that you may have them all to yourself.  Are you interested in DIY fishing? Listed below are three PRO tips that will help you get the most of your precious time off of the boat.

  • If at all possible, bring your own rod & reel and waders. Having your own gear means you will be on the water quickly and get every possible minute of fishing in.  We are not aware of any places that will rent gear to DIY anglers, they just provide gear to their clients.
  • Buy your fishing license ahead of time so you don’t spend valuable fishing time driving around looking for a license. Once again, more time fishing and less time wasted.  If you intend to try fishing for king salmon, make sure you purchase a king stamp for an additional cost.  The king salmon fishery is more controlled than other fisheries and often has special regulations and requirements.  Here is the Alaska Department of Fish & Games license page.
  • Order your flies and leaders, rods and reels, or any other gear ahead of time and have them shipped to your home before your trip. It will save you time once you reach your destination and our shop, Alaska Fly Fishing Goods in Juneau is the only full-service fly-fishing shop in S.E. Alaska.

Listed below are three separate gear lists depending on the season you will be fishing.  In each list you will find flies, beads (if applicable), leaders, split shot and other specific items for your day on the water.  These lists are exclusive to what you will fish with here and don't include gear you would always have while fishing (i.e., fishing pack, pliers, nippers, waders, rod/reel, etc.)

alaska cruise excursions fishing

Go fishing for halibut in Icy Strait, where these giant flatfish are voraciously feeding throughout the summer. Meeting at the dock, you will embark your comfortable cabin cruiser and receive a safety orientation before taking the 20–30-minute ride out to the premier fishing area in Icy Strait. These waters are teeming with halibut as they serve as the main migration corridor for halibut traveling from the Pacific to their summer feeding grounds and spawning streams in southeast Alaska. The largest Pacific flatfish, Alaskan halibut are renowned for their mammoth size. The former state record halibut-a 440-pound whopper-was landed near Hoonah, so catching a 100-pounder in Icy Strait isn't unusual. Imagine the thrill of hooking one of these monster fish and reeling it in from the depths. It's an amazing experience because halibut are longer than most flatfishes with a width one third of their length, so that husky girth produces a lot of resistance. You will spend approximately 2.5 hours on the water, fishing with bait that may include herring, salmon and octopus, which is one of the halibut's favorite meals. If you catch one, you'll notice that halibut has smooth scales, a light-colored bottom side and a darker top. The colors are a natural camouflage that mimics the hues of the ocean floor and water. Not only are these waters home to halibut, but they are also filled with whales, sea lion, and seals so come prepared with your camera and binoculars. At the conclusion of your fishing time, you will head back to the pier where your tour concludes.

20 Must-Do Experiences in Alaska

Must do in Alaska - Denali National Park

  • Find a Cruise

When contemplating your “must do in Alaska” bucket list, bear in mind that there is no place on Earth like the 49th state. Alaskans like to call their home the Last Frontier, a phrase that still fits. After all, this is a state more than twice the size of Texas, but with less than a million residents.

Much of the land is all but untouched by humans and instead inhabited by an incredible array of wildlife. This is one of the few places where you can see humpback whales breaching near calving glaciers, or bald eagles hunting wild salmon.

The Alaskans who do live here tend to embody the fiercely unconventional, pioneer spirit of their Gold Rush-era prospector predecessors. This has long been a place where people have chosen to live according to their own rules, in some cases off the grid altogether. Travelers here will find warm hospitality, avant-garde art, and an infectious sense of adventure.

From seeing the Northern Lights to flying over the Arctic Circle, here are just a few of the must-see in Alaska experiences to plan.

Go Dog Sledding in Seward

Must do in Alaska - Dog sledding

Dog sledding in Seward

In January 1925, a diphtheria outbreak was sweeping through Nome, Alaska, threatening the lives of all the local inhabitants. The frigid winter conditions rendered many forms of transportation treacherous or downright impossible.

The outlook was grim until a team of brave dog sledders traveled hundreds of miles carrying diphtheria antitoxin, a life-saving serum.

Almost a full century later, locals in Alaska still commemorate this courageous event with the Iditarod Sled Dog Race. Each year, teams of mushers zoom 1,000 miles over snowy terrain with their trained Alaskan malamutes, Samoyeds, and Siberian huskies.

Although technology may have advanced since the 1920s, dog racing in Alaska is much more than a sport. National park rangers often use teams of dogs to reach off-road spots in winter.

Husky in Seward

Whether you’re a dog parent or simply an animal lover, it’s hard to think of a better way to spend an afternoon than hanging with these charismatic canines.

In the coastal town of Seward , visitors can tour the racing kennels and snuggle up to puppies. Afterward, you’ll board a custom wheeled sled for a two-mile ride from Seavey Homestead to Resurrection Mountain.

Get Your Heart Racing on the World’s Largest ZipRider

If you’re the kind of person who instinctively heads straight for the tallest, fastest, most terrifying roller coaster at an amusement park, the ZipRider at Icy Strait Point should be right up there on you “must do in Alaska” list.

But even if you’re not a hardcore adrenaline-junkie, it just might be, too. Since groups of six can tackle this Alaskan adventure together, it makes for a great family bonding activity.

Situated in Icy Strait Point, this ZipRider is the biggest on the planet, featuring six 5,330-foot lines. Over the course of the ride, travelers plummet 1,330 feet at speeds of up to 60 miles per hour.

Taking the initial plunge off the first platform is admittedly daunting and may challenge even the most steadfast of nerves.

Lush landscape of Icy Strait Point

Once you’re whizzing 300 feet over the temperate rainforest canopy, however, the ride is pure pleasure. It helps that the scenery is nothing short of spectacular. Keep an eye out for the icy peaks of the Fairweather Range in Glacier National Park in the distance.

While the ZipRider itself is obviously the high point, the journey to get there is an adventure in and of itself.

Drivers keep the bus ride from Hoonah interesting with all sorts of anecdotes and informational tidbits about the area. Take a window seat if you can; bears and other large mammals have a tendency to wander through the area.

Go Whale Watching in Point Adolphus, Icy Strait

Humpback whale in Point Adolphus, Icy Strait

Humpback whale in Point Adolphus, Icy Strait Point

A warning: whale watching in Alaska may ruin you for doing it just about anywhere else. Whereas in some places, a stray tail fin sighting may be cause for celebration, Alaskan waters are teeming with marine life.

Among the many possible places to see cetaceans, Point Adolphus in Glacier Bay National Park ranks among the very best. These nutrient-dense waters toward the southern tip of Icy Strait draw large marine mammals of all kinds.

Humpback whales in Point Adolphus, Icy Strait Point

Each year, humpback whales migrate more than 10,000 miles from the warm waters of Hawaii in the winter to Alaska in the summer . Although these majestic giants were once critically endangered, more than 20,000 now swim here. As a result, this is a terrific place to watch humpback calves breaching and adults flashing their tails.

Travelers can expect to see plenty of other species on a whale-watching expedition here. Pods of both resident and transient orcas can often be spotted hunting here. Dall’s porpoises have a tendency to leap alongside boats and play the wake.

Try a Traditional Alaskan Salmon Bake in Juneau

Must do in Alaska - Alaskan Salmon Bake

Alaskan salmon bake, Juneau

Wild salmon have been central to the Alaskan way of life for thousands of years. As a part of the local ecosystem, these fish are crucial. They provide a primary source of nutrition for everything from grizzly bears to bald eagles .

Indigenous Alaskan nations trapped and preserved salmon for generations before European colonists arrived. And when prospectors swarmed the state in a frenzied search for gold, wild salmon were a main source of sustenance.

Alaskan salmon bake in Juneau

Today, Alaskan salmon are prized throughout the world for their rich, fatty, exceptionally flavorful meat. It’s also a rare success story when it comes to seafood sustainability. Thanks to decades of careful population management, wild Alaskan salmon is a treat travelers can enjoy with a clean conscience.

For a uniquely Alaskan experience, try an Alaskan salmon bake in Juneau . Traditionally, salmon bakes are community affairs, much like a Midwestern fish fry. The word “bake” is a bit of a misnomer, as the fish is actually slow-roasted over a live alderwood fire.

Visitors have feasted on Gold Creek Salmon Bakes in the temperate rainforest just outside Juneau for more than 30 years. Along the way to your meal, you’ll see a historic gold mine and hear tales of the region. The salmon bake includes a full spread with cornbread, potatoes, wild rice, and baked beans.

Learn All About Sea Creatures in Seward

Must do in Alaska - Alaska Sealife Center

Alaska SeaLife Center

For a chance to meet adorable sea otter pups, Steller sea lions, and other marine mammals, visiting the Alaska SeaLife Center is one of the best things to do in Seward . The facility actively promotes education for all ages, as well as ongoing research and animal rehabilitation.

Many visitors to the center head straight for the ringed seals and the spotted seals. With their immense eyes and playful dispositions, it’s not hard to see why these mammals capture attention. Nevertheless, there are plenty of other stars here, including ethereal clusters of moon jellies and the formidable red king crabs.

Don’t miss the chance to see a rare giant Pacific octopus. These hyper-intelligent cephalopods can grow to weigh more than 100 pounds and change color at will. Groups of up to six visitors can book a private encounter with these elusive creatures. During the 30-minute experience, travelers can help feed the octopus and learn about its fascinating biology.

Go on a Bering Sea Crab Fishermen’s Tour in Ketchikan

Bering Sea Crab Fishermen’s Tour in Ketchikan

Bering Sea Crab Fishermen’s Tour, Ketchikan

Of all of Alaska’s prized wild seafood, no catch is more valuable, or dangerous to hunt, than crab. Red king crabs, which run slightly larger than their blue and gold counterparts, are still highly sought after.

These real-life sea monsters can grow to nearly six feet across and boast remarkably sweet, tasty meat. Dungeness crabs and snow crabs are also in high demand, although they tend to be smaller and are a somewhat more affordable delicacy.

For seafood lovers or anyone else fascinated by this world, the three-hour Bering Sea Crab Fishermen’s Tour is one of the best things to do in Ketchikan . Unlike many real crab-fishing expeditions, this one doesn’t involve risking life and limb—or your lunch.

View of the F/V Aleutian Ballad, Ketchikan

F/V Aleutian Ballad, Ketchikan

The F/V Aleutian Ballad is a sturdy, solid steel vessel measuring over 100 feet in length and it sticks to the calm waters of the Inside Passage here. Passengers can expect smooth sailing on the open-air deck.

Along the journey, you’ll see crabs of enormous size being pulled from the water. Curious passengers are even allowed to touch these giant crustaceans. More often than not, traps will pull up other sea creatures, including octopuses.

All of these other ocean critters wind up onboard in temporary holding tanks where passengers can see them up close. Before the end of the voyage, they’re released unharmed back into the sea.

Sample Craft Beers in Anchorage

Craft beer tasting in Alaska

Alaskans tend to be known for their independence, their resourcefulness, and their refusal to adhere to convention. All of these qualities are pretty perfect for starting a craft brewery, which is perhaps why this sparsely populated state sports so many exceptional ones. The best Alaskan craft breweries take advantage of the state’s local ingredients, many of which are rare or wild.

The original here is Midnight Sun Brewing Co., which got its start back in 1995. Today, the Alaskan brewery is a well-established powerhouse with one of the best taprooms in town.

At any given time, The Loft offers 16 rotating draft beers, plus an extensive selection of bar food. The stars here are the boozy barleywines and imperial stouts. If you get a chance, try the heady Monk’s Mistress, an especially potent Belgian-style dark ale.

Glacier Brewhouse is another one worth seeking out. Opened just a year after Midnight Sun Brewing Co., the brewery is particularly proud of its barrel-aging program. The constantly rotating selection of draft beers alone is worth checking out. It doesn’t hurt, though, that the brewhouse is one of the best places to eat in Anchorage .

The high-ceilinged, woodlined restaurant and taproom has a clear view of the craft brewery. Take a seat at the bar and dine on wild Alaskan seafood and pizzas made using an Old World rye sourdough starter.

See Wolves, Moose, & Other Wildlife Up Close

View of the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center

Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center

Located an hour’s drive from downtown Anchorage , the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center is one of the best chances to see the state’s charismatic megafauna. Note that this is not a zoo. Almost all of the animals here were orphaned or severely injured and could not survive on their own in the wild.

The center allows them to live out their days in spacious enclosures that closely mimic their natural habitats. Check the schedule for regular talks and educational programming.

Kids will love meeting feathered and furred characters like Snappy, a great-horned owl with a partially amputated wing, and Hugo, a grizzly bear found abandoned more than 20 years ago. Moose, elk, reindeer, wood bison, and muskox also roam these pastures. Of particular note is the small resident wolf pack, who love playing with animal handlers.

Spy on Bears in Lake Clark National Park

Bear spotted in Lake Clark National Park

Lake Clark National Park

Alaska is known for being home to a vast array of wildlife, but perhaps none are more synonymous with the state than its bears.

The state boasts more than 140,000 of these highly intelligent mammals, including 98 percent of the American population of brown bears. For Alaskans, encounters with brown, black, and polar bears are simply a part of life.

Interestingly, brown bears and grizzly bears are the same species—the former simply inhabit coastal areas while the latter live in landlocked territory. Kodiak bears, meanwhile, are a subspecies of brown bear found exclusively in the Kodiak Archipelago. Black bears often coexist with brown bears, but are significantly smaller and usually less aggressive.

Bears spotted in Lake Clark National Park

While travelers may very well inadvertently encounter a brown or black bear right in Anchorage, your chances are significantly higher just outside of the city. Lake Clark National Park, roughly an hour and a half drive out of town, is one of the best places to see bears in Alaska .

When snapping photos of brown or black bears, be sure to follow your guide’s safety precautions. In general, bears do not like to attack humans unless provoked. Nevertheless, these are incredibly powerful, wild animals that can run as fast as a horse.

When in bear country, either avoid carrying food or make sure it is tightly sealed. Bear cubs may look cuddly, but maintain a safe distance to avoid upsetting any protective mama bears.

Stroll Along the Homer Spit

Aerial view of Homer Spit

Few places are more atmospheric than the Homer Spit on a gorgeous summer afternoon. This spindly peninsula stretches 4.5 miles into the icy waters of Kachemak Bay. The strip of land is so narrow that you’ll see water on both sides as you wander along the promenade.

In the backdrop, the snow-capped peaks of the Kenai Mountains loom. Overhead, birds of prey swoop and soar. Bald eagles are far more prevalent in Alaska than any of the lower 48 states and this is by far one of the best places to see them in the wild.

Houses lined up on Homer Spit

As spectacular as the surrounding scenery is, exploring the Homer Spit itself is one of the best things to do in Homer . Galleries, cafés, and eateries line virtually the entire peninsula. Homer has a famously bohemian streak, thanks to the many artists who have migrated here and made a home for themselves.

After poking around the local galleries, stop for brunch at La Baleine Café. Chefs Kirsten and Mandy Dixon pride themselves in sourcing organic ingredients from the Homer Farmer’s Market.

Order a “Musher Meal,” which the duo served to participants in the Iditarod Sled Dog Race for 30 years. It’s a hearty plate of reindeer sausage, eggs, Manchego, and salsa on corn tortillas.

Walk Along a Glacier

Must do in Alaska - Exit Glacier

Exit Glacier, Kenai Fjords National Park

There are estimated to be around 27,000 glaciers in Alaska , but many of these are all but inaccessible to humans. Luckily, there are a few key exceptions to this rule, which are a breeze to reach.

One of the most beautiful places in Alaska , the Exit Glacier in Kenai Fjords National Park is located a mere 15-minute drive from downtown Seward.

For generations of mountaineers, this massive, flowing expanse of ice has served as an entry point to the sprawling Harding Ice Field. Yet even without technical climbing equipment, visitors can easily walk the Glacier View Loop. This well-maintained, one-mile trail offers incredible photo-ops of Exit Glacier and is manageable for all levels of hikers.

Must do in Alaska - Mendenhall Glacier

Mendenhall Glacier

Another stunning glacier that makes for an ideal afternoon trip is the 13-mile Mendenhall Glacier. Located an easy 12-mile drive from downtown Juneau, this tidewater glacier is accessible by kayak or by road. As a bonus, the visitor center goes above and beyond with top-notch exhibits.

Board the White Pass Railway

Must do in Alaska - White Pass Railway

White Pass Railway

The White Pass Summit Excursion near Skagway is arguably one of the most stunning rail journeys in the world. The vintage train cars hug the sides of the mountain for virtually the entirety of the two-and-a-half hour round-trip sojourn. The views are something every visitor interested in both history and scenery must see in Alaska.

As you wind along sheer slopes, it’s hard not to think of the brave workers who risked life and limb to build the route in the first place. At the onset of the Klondike Gold Rush, the routes into Alaska’s vast interior were treacherous. Neither the Chilkoot Trail nor the White Pass Trail were safe for the tens of thousands of miners pouring into the area.

Michael J. Heney, a railroad builder with the grit and the chops to take on such a challenge, joined up with Sir Thomas Tancrede, who had investor connections. In 1898, construction on one of the most difficult rail construction projects known to man began. At one more, around 2,000 men were working here to lay track as fast as possible.

Pan for Gold in Fairbanks

Must do in Alaska - Gold Dredge 8

Gold panning in Gold Dredge 8, Fairbanks

Alaska’s Gold Rush history may have only lasted a little over three years, but it forever changed the state. From 1896 to 1899, more than 100,000 prospectors headed north to seek their fortune.

Many would return home penniless, while a few struck it rich. In the process, a network of boom towns sprung up to accommodate the miners. Some likened it to the Wild West, a quasi-lawless period of big dreams and grand adventures.

Couple exploring Gold Dredge 8, Fairbanks

Gold Dredge 8, Fairbanks

Even after the initial fervor subsided, people continued to search for gold in these lands. The Goldstream Dredge No. 8 was a mining operation in Fairbanks from 1929 to 1959. Today, this carefully preserved historic site allows visitors to learn all about the past.

Along the way, you’ll hear true stories of the larger-than-life figures who once populated this place. At the end of the tour, visitors can even try their hand at panning for gold. More than a few have walked away with a very valuable Alaskan souvenir .

Marvel at the Tongass National Forest

Misty landscape of Tongass National Forest

Tongass National Forest

As the largest intact temperate rainforest in the world, the Tongass National Forest is a marvel. Wandering along the hiking trails here, it’s possible to imagine a time before humans reshaped their surrounding landscape.

The rainforest covers more than 11,000 miles of Alaska’s southern coastline. Just about everything everywhere you look in here is alive. Ancient Sitka spruce, alder, hemlock, and yellow and red cedar trees form a dense, verdant canopy. Meanwhile, the forest floor is vivid green with ferns, moss, and other vegetation.

It’s possible to enter the rainforest at many points, but the trails around Juneau are particularly well-maintained.

Keep an eye out for both brown and black bears, both of which thrive here. Salmon run through the streams in season, which means there are a number of places to watch bears hunting in preparation for winter. Shy Sitka deer also regularly flash through the trees and lucky visitors may even spot a wolf.

Go Fly Fishing in Denali

Man fly fishing in Alaska

Fly fishing

Even if you’ve never tried your hand at fly fishing, Alaska is a great place to start. The state boasts pristine streams with healthy fish populations. That means that even relative novices have an excellent chance of snagging a trophy-worthy catch.

Denali National Preserve, adjacent to the Alaskan national park itself, allows for sport fishing and is a great place to start. Note that in order to go fishing, you’ll need a non-resident fishing permit. Luckily, these are easily obtainable and guides on organized fly fishing trips will typically pick one up for you.

One of the best places to fish in Alaska , travelers can expect to haul in trout and wild salmon in this area depending on the season. Fly fishing here tends to be catch-and-release—although locals can and do eat their catch. Even if you’re not planning to cook and clean your catch, you can still pose for a killer photo with it.

Learn About the History of the Alaskan First Nations

Must do in Alaska - Alaska Native Heritage Center

Alaska Native Heritage Center

Thousands of years before European colonists arrived on Alaskan shores, Indigenous people fished, foraged, farmed, and hunted on these lands. The languages and traditions of Alaskan First Nations are still a vital part of life in this region. More than 20 percent of the state’s population identifies as Alaska Native to this day.

There are all sorts of ways to learn more about First Nations including the Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian. One of the best things to do in Anchorage is to visit the Alaska Native Heritage Center, which offers insights into the sophisticated strategies Indigenous people once used to survive Alaska’s harsh climate. First opened in 1999, the center delves into the past and present of 11 distinct cultural groups.

Yet as fascinating as the history of the First Nations may be, it’s important to remember that these Alaskan cultures are evolving with each new generation. Juneau, in particular, has become a hotbed of contemporary Alaskan Indigenous art. At the city’s state-of-the-art Sealaska Heritage Arts Campus, artists reinterpret traditional crafts such as textile weaving and wood carving.

Catch a Glimpse of Mount Denali

Must do in Alaska - Mount Denali

Mount Denali

Standing a staggering 20,310 feet above sea level, Mount Denali is the highest mountain in all of North America.

In 1897, the peak was renamed Mount McKinley by a gold prospector by the name of William Dickey in honor of a U.S. president. In 2016, this Alaskan mountain was officially rechristened Mount Denali, which means “Great One” in the Alaskan Native Koyukon language.

“Great One” feels like an apt moniker for this mighty summit. The sight of its snowy summit and glaciers catching the sunlight is truly something wondrous to behold. Unfortunately, very few people can claim to have seen it. The mountain is so massive that it tends to create its own weather patterns, meaning that the summit is often veiled by clouds.

Travelers and locals fortunate enough to see the mountain in all its glory often refer to themselves as part of the “10% club”—or 30% club, depending on who asks. Either way, it’s a rare and privileged minority. Though the chances may be slim, a clear shot of Mount Denali is special enough to warrant trying your luck.

See the Northern Lights From Fairbanks

View of the Northern Lights in Fairbanks

Northern Lights in Fairbanks

Witnessing the Northern Lights firsthand is one of those ubiquitous bucket list items that is very much worth doing. The aurora borealis, as it’s also known, manifests as undulating sheets of luminous violet, blue, and emerald up in the northern night sky.

Part of its allure lies in its elusive nature. Although it’s possible to monitor the conditions to find times when the probability of seeing the Northern Lights is highest, no one can predict them with complete certainty.

There may never be a guarantee of seeing the Northern Lights, but Fairbanks, Alaska , offers some of the best odds anywhere of catching this breathtaking sight. At 65 degrees north latitude, this is one of the closest bastions of civilization to the Arctic Circle.

During the late summer nights, when there is some darkness, the chances of seeing colors dance across the Milky Way are fairly high.

Ride ATVs in Denali National Park and Preserve

Must do in Alaska - Denali National Park

Denali National Park

Rugged, wondrous Denali National Park is one of the best places to visit in Alaska to see some of North America’s megafauna out in the wild.

The park itself is home to 169 species of birds , plus 39 species of mammals, including many of Alaska’s most iconic favorites. Both brown grizzly bears and black bears forage in these woods and fish in the park’s streams. Moose, caribou, and elk all graze here. Eagle-eyed visitors will often see herds of snow-white Dall’s sheep clambering along sheer rock faces.

The area is also one of the few places travelers have a good chance of seeing wolves in the wild. Although gray wolves can be found in many parts of North America, these intelligent predators often tend wisely to steer clear of humans. At one point, these creatures had been hunted to near extinction.

Gray wolf spotted in Denali National Park

The more biologists study them, the more they have come to realize how crucial wolves are to a healthy ecosystem. Denali National Park is one of the few places where the population is substantial enough that fortunate travelers might see these creatures roam.

Part of the reason wildlife thrives here is the relative lack of paved roads and other hallmarks of human civilization. That means that visitors looking to explore the national park and nearby preserve have limited transportation options. Inside the park, guided bus tours and park shuttles run along a single, winding road towards the mountain itself and back.

To get off the group bus, you’ll need a sturdy, all-terrain vehicle and an experienced guide. An ATV ride offers an unbeatable opportunity to get off the main drag and see Alaskan animals . It’s also a thrilling adventure in and of itself.

Fly to the Arctic Circle

Must do in Alaska - Arctic Circle

Flightseeing in Arctic Circle

The Arctic Circle is one of the most surreal places on planet Earth. This northernmost latitude is home to the midnight sun and the polar night on the summer and winter solstices. On the former, the sun never sets for 24 hours; on the latter, it never rises.

The far northern city of Fairbanks is less than 200 miles from the Arctic Circle, but the land journey is not for the faint of heart. Around 75 percent of the road there is unpaved and there are few signs of human civilization along the way.

Flightseeing in Arctic Circle

While intrepid travelers with camping gear still make the trek, travelers who are pressed for time may wish to opt for a faster and far more scenic route. Flightseeing is one of the best things to do in Alaska , and round-trip flights from Fairbanks can whisk passengers to the Arctic Circle and the Brooks Mountain Range in a matter of hours.

Along the way, you’ll see the Yukon River glinting majestically in the sun, not to mention miles and miles of some of the last true remaining wilderness.

Princess Cruises Offering New Northern Lights Programming on Alaska Voyages

The aurora borealis—also known as the Northern Lights—have mesmerized skygazers for centuries.

Now, Princess Cruises is unveiling new programming designed to help guests learn more about this dazzling celestial spectacle.

This summer, the cruise line is rolling out a new experience called “Voyage to the Stars” as part of its “North to Alaska with Princess” program. Guests who are sailing to Alaska will be able to watch a Northern Lights presentation in the Princess Theater to learn more about this natural phenomenon.

"Each season in Alaska we strive to deliver enriching experiences for our guests to feel immersed in the beauty and local culture of this spectacular destination," says Terry Thornton, chief commercial officer of Princess Cruises. "After receiving our highest guest satisfaction ranking ever last season, we knew we wanted to design elevated programming to further connect our guests to all of the wonders of the 49th state for our 55th anniversary season."

This summer, Princess will offer 158 departures on 14 unique itineraries—its biggest season yet. Travelers will visit 17 destinations on seven ships.

In addition to the new Northern Lights offering, Princess is offering a wide array of activities and activations during trips to No. 49. For example, guests who sail aboard Majestic Princess and Discovery Princess can go fishing during the day, then eat their own catch for dinner. The cruise line is also offering salmon cooking demonstrations, a four-course seafood pop-up dining event and 13 new shore excursions.

On land, the cruise line is also rolling out a new geocaching expedition program at its five Princess Wilderness Lodges. Princess is also serving Alaska-themed cocktails, mocktails and appetizers, plus a new Alaska tea experience, cooking demonstrations, cocktail-making classes and more.

This year Princess guests will step inside a planetarium in the Princess Theater for a front row seat to the “Northern Lights” presentation showcasing the beauty and wonder of this phenomenon featuring live imagery, designed to engage adults and kids alike.

“Each season in Alaska we strive to deliver enriching experiences for our guests to feel immersed in the beauty and local culture of this spectacular destination,” said Terry Thornton, chief commercial officer of Princess Cruises. “After receiving our highest guest satisfaction ranking ever last season, we knew we wanted to design elevated programming to further connect our guests to all of the wonders of the 49th state for our 55th anniversary season.”

The 2024 season promises to be the biggest and best ever for Princess with 158 departures on 14 unique itineraries with 17 destinations, including five glacier viewing experiences on seven stunning ships.
