Christmas Markets Rhine River Cruise with AmaWaterways and Photos

The idea of a Christmas Markets river cruise in Europe didn’t really interest me. In my mind, I visualized tacky trinket markets in every town and city, overrun with aggressive shoppers, cheapskate lookers, sloppy drunks and of course, tourists.

I was curious but reluctant to go. To dispel any of my preconceived notions, I decided to experience this seasonal phenomenon.

Hopefully, I’d prove myself wrong. And I did. Keep reading to follow my journey on a Christmas Markets river cruise.

Christmas Markets Rhine River Cruise Review

My original Christmas Markets river cruise plan was a seven-night trip along the Rhine river from Amsterdam, Netherlands to Basel, Switzerland traveling with AmaWaterways .

Scheduled for the end of November, I hoped that the cities we’d visit would have their decorations set up and their markets in full swing.

Several months earlier, I booked my return from Europe on the westbound Queen Mary 2. The ship was scheduled to depart from Southampton on December 15th, so I had to adhere to the schedule, or be “stuck” in Europe til the spring.

RELATED POST :  What to Expect on a Queen Mary 2 Transatlantic Crossing

On the day I boarded AmaCerto , an unexpected change of plans happened. Without warning, I would be on back-to-back Christmas Markets river cruises through December 10th. Not a bad way to spend an extra week in Europe.

All that was needed to remain aboard AmaCerto for two weeks was an easy stateroom change between cruises at the turnaround point in Basel. And an unexpected day at a new Christmas Market city.

Five days to be in transit was plenty of time to get from Amsterdam to Southampton.

AmaCerto Christmas and Hanukkah decorations

This was probably my 10th trip up and down the Rhine between Basel and Amsterdam. The more I traverse this historic stretch of river, the more I learn about each ancient and medieval city, town, castle, cathedral and ruins.

I’m never bored and it gives me oodles of not-to-be-missed things to see and do to share with others.

When are Christmas Markets River Cruises?

Sounds like a simple question, right? But to be on the rivers in Europe at the right time for the optimal Christmas Markets experience takes a little knowledge and planning.

Christmas Markets in Europe, especially Germany, generally open the third weekend of November and run through mid-December. But not right up until Christmas. Almost every city closes its Christmas Markets a full week before Christmas. No last minute rush to buy gifts.

This distinctly European extravaganza reaches its seasonal crescendo by the second weekend of December. That’s prime time for Europe Christmas Markets.

Vendors from all around the continent flock to these extravagant events, whether in Germany, France or even England. Sellers haul their wares and set up elaborate little huts, many of which look like gingerbread cottages and mini log cabins.

You can find almost anything at the Christmas Markets. From hand-tooled leather wallets and fluffy alpaca socks to steaming mugs of gluhwein (hot mulled wine), crispy potato pancakes and plates swamped with gooey melted cheese and dill pickles. It’s sensory overload in every direction. What you won’t find are cheesy, plastic ornaments.

Day One:  Embarkation Day in Amsterdam

Our itinerary, the “Enchanting Rhine”, began in Amsterdam and ended 764-miles upriver in Basel, Switzerland. The headwaters of the Rhine is not far from Basel, in Lake Constance, sourced from the Alps.

Here’s our “Enchanting Rhine” cruise itinerary:

• Amsterdam, Netherlands (overnight onboard) • Cologne, Germany • Rüdesheim / Rhine Gorge Cruising • Speyer / Heidelburg • Kehl / Strasbourg, France • Breisach, Germany • Basel, Switzerland

River cruise dock in Amsterdam

It wasn’t exactly a day for hoofing it around Amsterdam. Late November and inclement weather is the norm. Sunny days are a welcome surprise. We would have both over the next two weeks.

Day 1 in Amsterdam was a complimentary tour day for AmaCerto guests. I chose to simply walk around, and I needed to buy a winter coat!

Amsterdam Canal cruise and walking tour

Everyone was back onboard by 5:00pm to get ready for the customary pre-dinner meeting in the lounge. These meetings occur every night, and follow the same lounge-to-dining-room procession throughout the cruise.

This evening ritual the same no matter which river cruise line you choose.

Sometime during the chilly night, AmaCerto was quietly untied and began the slow cruise upstream. Yes, upstream. The Rhine river flows “downhill” in the north from the Alps into the North Sea.

After a morning of sailing past farmland and industrial swatches in the Netherlands and northern Germany, we neared Cologne.

AmaCerto reached its first stop in Cologne by late afternoon. Christmas markets here really kick into high gear after 5pm and last all day and night on weekends. Since this was the last week in November, even though just about every stall and food stand was set up, there weren’t wall-to-wall crowds as I expected. Not yet.

Day Two:  First Christmas Market – Cologne, Germany

Cologne Christmas Markets Heinzel

Cologne has six Christmas Markets and the largest four are located near the Cologne Cathedral. I managed to find all four major Christmas Markets with no more than 15 minutes walk between each one.

Cologne Christmas Markets Ice Skating Rink

Day Three:  En route to Rüdesheim, Germany

Rhine Gorge

Our morning was spent cruising the most famous and photo-taking portion of the Rhine River, the Rhine River Gorge. In a span of less than three hours, the AmaCerto slowly cruised past no less than 30 castles and castle ruins.

And the sun was shining! This stretch of the Rhine can get very windy, so the warmth of the sun was appreciated by all.

Passengers on deck wearing coats and hats along the Rhine river.

Second Christmas Markets: A Day in Rüdesheim

AmaWaterways had a planned evening event in Rüdesheim. After dinner, everyone walked the short distance to Rüdesheimer Schloss for a private pouring of flaming Rüdesheimer coffee (coffee with liquor, set ablaze and then topped with whipped cream).

A local oompah band, sans tuba, was the entertainment. Take a listen (above).

ama waterways christmas cruise

Day Four:  Third Christmas Markets in Speyer, Germany

Speyer is one of my favorite medium-size port towns. Depending upon where your river ships docks, you might be just a short 15 minute walk into town. There’s a huge pedestrian shopping zone and at Christmas Markets time, it’s bustling with store shoppers plus those who come for the markets.

Speyer Christmas Market downtown

Day Five:  Strasbourg, France

Finally, the day many of us were most excited to see; Strasbourg, France. River ships dock in Kehl, Germany, just across the river from Strasbourg. The two countries are connected by the Bridge of Europe or Pont de l’Europe. It’s only a 15 minute bus ride depending upon traffic crossing the bridge and into Strasbourg.

Christmas Markets in Strasbourg

Almost all river cruises to Strasbourg plan an entire day there. Guests can join a morning walking tour of Strasbourg and then either take the motor coach back to the ship for lunch or have lunch in the quaint and oldest section of Strasbourg, Petite France.

For those returned to the AmaCerto for lunch, a shuttle bus ran back and forth into Strasbourg from 2:30pm until 5:30pm. Since departure isn’t until 4:45am (that’s right, a.m.!), many guests chose to have a truly French evening dining experience ashore and took a taxi back to the AmaCerto.

Cathedral Notre Dame de Strasbourg

Strasbourg’s Christmas Markets, “Christkindelmärik”, is one of the oldest in France, began in 1570. There are several Christmas Markets within Strasbourg but the main one is Place de la Cathédrale.

strasbourg christmas markets

Day Six:  Fifth Christmas Markets in Breisach and/or Riquewihr

Breisach, Germany was the fifth and final port on this seven-day Enchanting Rhine cruise. Guests could choose either an afternoon walking tour of Breisach and then to Freiburg by motor coach.

Another tour was bicycle tour of Breisach or a 45-minute bus ride to Riquewihr, a beautiful small French town in the heart of Alsace. Sort of like the town in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.

Breisach downtown.

Since I knew I’d be back in Breisach in three days to do a walk-around, a re-visit to the charming Alsatian town of Riquewihr was my destination. I was curious how the town would be dressed up for Christmas.

It’s always sad to say goodbye to new river cruise friends. On small river ships like these, it’s easy to get to know almost everyone.

AmaCerto docked in Breisach Germany

After the Captain’s Farewell Dinner, it was time to head to my stateroom. With jacket on, I sat on the balcony and enjoyed the crisp breeze as the AmaCerto left Breisach for Basel, Switzerland.

AmaCerto in Basel.

Day 7:  Basel, Switzerland – Turnaround Day

When we woke up the next morning, we were in Basel. It was important for me to stay out of the way of the crew this morning. Tons of provisions were waiting to be loaded, rooms had to be cleaned as the ship prepared for its next guests.

The perfect opportunity to check out, wait for it… the Christmas Markets in Basel.

Basel Christmas Market

By tonight, I’d be settled into my new room, ready to re-explore the same Christmas Markets that we visited on our last cruise, except in reverse. This time, I knew where to go for the best potato pancakes and glüewein!

Disclosure: I was a guest aboard AmaWaterways AmaCerto. As always, all opinions and photos are my own. How could I fake this stuff? It was a spectacular pair of cruises on an excellent, award-winning river cruise line.

Seriously. You need to put this on your to-do list. And if you can budget the time and money, reserve a back-to-back river cruise.

Douce France Review with CroisiEurope on a Rhine River Cruise

Douce France Review with CroisiEurope on a Rhine River Cruise

Hi Nancy, Thank you for reading my article. From my experience, almost every major river cruise line pushes two twin beds together to create a king bed. Or at least very close to the size of a king. Cruise ships do the same, too. I don’t think it would be an issue because the two twins together are definitely larger than a traditional land-based queen bed.

If my suggestion still leaves you unsure, your travel agent or someone at a major river cruise line’s reservations department should be able to get the exact width measurements for you. All I know is that, in my experiences, two twins = king bed. I hope this is helpful to you.

Thank you again for reading my article and taking the time to send your question. Have a wonderful cruise!

With all of your knowledge of river cruises, are there any lines that offer king size beds in their state rooms? My husband and I need this size of bed and we like the small ship. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Marlene, Thank you for readying my article. Your question is very interesting and I’m sure applies to many travelers. Going on tours in Europe, especially in small towns could be an issue for finding a public washroom. France and by now probably other countries have pay-per-use restrooms on street corners. You’d just have to have the right currency and be on the closest corner. Motor coaches all seem to have restrooms, but passengers are not always aware. These are located at the back exit door, sort of under a row of seats. Sometimes they are locked and only the driver has the key.

I would take a very close look at where you’d go before paying anything for a Europe trip. That’s a very tough and personal question to answer. I’m sorry that I can’t say that it would be easy to find a washroom in Europe…unless you could duck into a restaurant to use one. And even then, be sure to have the right currency. For me personally, it hasn’t been an issue. If there’s a facility where we are visiting, I’ll usually take the time. Curiously, another thing I do is if the tour includes lunch, then I just pick at the meal, unless I know there will be a washroom en route. I don’t want to take any chances and have found this to be a good practice.

Good luck and best wishes for a wonderful trip abroad. Thank you again for reading my article and taking the time to write your question.

Love to live vicariously thru someone elses travels as having choleitis makes it difficult to get around and leads me to this question. Needing washrooms at a moments notice. How did you find them and did you always have to pay? Such an annoyance and always wonder how others contend with such issues. In Canada it’s considered a right to have washrooms at our disposal everywhere. Travelling to europe is never easy as one would like. Would love an info you can share.

Hi Laura, Thanks for your comment. The Christmas Markets experience is truly a shopping and food fest, especially if you like potato pancakes! I hope you get to go to one soon. From your email address, it looks like you’re much closer than I am! Happy travels. Sherry

I have only taken a summer river cruise with AmaWaterways so far but a Christmas markets cruise is definitely one I’d like to book. Even doing the same itinerary would be be totally different (I’m assuming). I’m not going to lie, I want to visit Rüdesheimer just for the coffee! A very interesting post.

Hi Karen, Thanks for reading the article and for your question. The market with the ferris wheel was the Altstadt Market, very close to the river dock…towards the Chocolate Museum end. I hope you get to go, if you haven’t already experienced the Christmas Markets in Germany or France. Thanks again for writing. Sherry

Which market in Cologne had the adorable ferris wheel?

(There he is, sitting at his desk, dreaming about an AmaWaterways Christmas Markets River Cruise. When suddenly, Scott realizes he shouldn’t just be dreaming – he should write a blog post about such an extraordinary adventure! 🤣 So… )

Hey everybody! This is Scott coming to you from another gorgeous day here in Florida. It’s 82° F with mostly clear skies and a light breeze out of the southwest. You can smell a little bit of the saltwater from the nearby Indian River. Otherwise, the air quality is excellent today. It’s as close to perfect as one can get without being on a cruise. ⛴

So, it’s a little hard to remember that the holiday season is right around the corner! lol 😂 At least when we lived in New York, the weather would get cold, there would be snow on the ground, and people would be bundled up, not wearing flip-flops, t-shirts, and shorts, on their way to the beach!

Romantic Couple, Christmas Markets AmaWaterways River Cruise

Let the “Capital of Noël,” Strasbourg, the oldest and largest Christmas Market in France, captivate you the way it has for so many others for centuries. Meander through Heidelberg’s majestic Christmas Market nestled idyllically amongst the historic squares of the Old Town. And while in Gengenbach, marvel at the world’s largest Advent calendar, where every evening at 6:00 PM, the brightly lit windows of the neo-classical town hall open and behind each one is a picture by a famous artist, such as Andy Warhol. Cherish all the glory of the season in grand European style as you cruise along ” the rivers of Europe.

What extras are included in AmaWaterways’ Christmas Markets river cruises?

Don’t miss the extra fun with traditions like Santa Claus, hiding the holiday pickle, and caroling as well as special holiday drinks and a gourmet holiday meal.

Anyone who is interested in European cultures. It’s a great way to delve into learning about other cultures.

People who especially love Christmas traditions. There are many traditions we don’t learn about that are interesting. You may even find something you want to introduce into your own family’s traditions!

Couples. What’s more romantic than downtime just having fun in between being pampered on the cruise?

Laughs and fun with people you may not get to spend enough time with throughout the year.

Multi-generation families (Kids must be 4+ years old, though it’s suggested that 6+ years old is more age appropriate. AmaWaterways is one of the few Europe river cruise lines that have some newer ships with staterooms that hold more than two and also have some connecting cabins. What a great way for families to grow closer, share experiences and build memories!

People who have done a Christmas Markets river cruise in the past. You may be surprised at how many people, because of how much fun they had, book another Christmas Markets tour on a different itinerary.

Small groups. Groups of 5 – 30 cabins made up of community, family, organizations or friends can have fun on the cruise and have stories to share at get-togethers for years.

3 women and 1 man outdoor in coats holding cups

Three big tips to know for your upcoming river cruise.

1) Glühwein is a warm, mulled (spiced) wine. It’s pronounced “glue-vine.” Each market has Glühwein served in a special cup made for their market. The Glühwein is about 3 euro and the cup is 3 euro which you get back if you return the cup. Many people, instead, forgo the return of their 3 euro and keep the cup as a souvenir. Don't drink alcohol? Try a cup of hot cider or hot chocolate.

2) Pack bubble wrap and shipping or duct tape along with a collapsible extra bag for souvenirs and holiday gifts for those at home.

3) Carry cash in the local currency in small denominations for purchases at the markets. ATMs are pretty handy.

AMA WATERWAYS CHRISTMAS MARKET CRUISE

I was fully prepared not to like this cruise and less than enthusiastically prepared for it. Upon arrival on board the ship I was grudgingly impressed with our stateroom. It was large and comfortable with a Juliet balcony and internet access. The bed and linens were plush and inviting. The meal seatings were not fixed but the majority of people sat at the same tables for the duration of the cruise. The food was good and plentiful and the wines offered at lunch and dinner were good and seemed to meet most approval. When booking your excursions there were 2 activity levels so that those either more comfortable moving at a slower pace or wanting a more indepth tour were accommodated and those of us moving a bit more quickly had another . Everyone seemed happy with the choice. Considering my initial reluctance on this cruise I have to give it a thumbs up. I cant think of anything to complain about and would highly recommend this experience.

We booked the 5 day/ 4 night New Year cruise with Shearings, booking procedure and information excellent. We had paid extra for a larger ( one of only 4 ) cabin and it was worth it, some cabins are tiny. Unfortunately the shower room was minute, the shower was just over the toilet so when having a shower the toilet got soaked, the shower room flooded we had to put the bath mat outside the shower room. Dont expect toiletries either. The duvet and pillows were disgusting ( I had put a duvet in the charity shop in better condition) although towels were changed daily they were rather threadbare. Bed linen not changed. We had a kettle in our room, some smaller cabins do not have a kettle, although sachets were not replenished. The only menu was pinned on a notice board! we had soup every day at lunch and dinner -no choice. Although you were given a slight choice eg meat fish, or vegetarian the night before there was no hint of how the meal may be cooked. Very little fresh vegetable, one day we had frozen carrots and peas . Not what you expect on a cruise. The cruise was advertised as nightly extertainment, there was nothing on our first night, second night was bingo, NYE was a German playing a key board, the last night a quiz. Scenery was beautiful even in the frost, unfortunatley most places were closed over the BH, I have done river cruises and ocean cruises before but would not travel on MV Virginia again.

Treasures of the Main and Rhine with AmaWaterways My fourth cruise with AmaWaterways and I can never get enough of them. I have travel in my blood and AmaWaterways always deliver. There are other river cruise lines operating in Europe and to be fair, their ships and itineraries look good, but this cruise line sets a higher standard and the ‘Treasures of the Main and Rhine’ tour is part of it. It is a 7 day cruise with a 2 day pre-extension in Prague. I started this trip a full 3 days before the tour officially started. I have been to Prague before, but I wanted to explore the city and area as much as possible. Yes, I did get lost, but that’s a different story. The hotel we stayed at was the Prague Intercontinental. A very nice hotel which is only a couple blocks from ‘old town’. This was my second time staying at the hotel and I was a little hesitant about staying there again. My first visit was something out of the movie; ‘Planes, Trains and Automobiles’. My room had a terrific view of a back alley with a dumpster. I was also serenated with the sound of running water. The washroom sink drain pipe had a rather large hole in it and every time I drained the sink after washing up, water would pour on the floor. I mentioned the problem to the hotel desk, but for some reason, it fell on deaf ears. I ended up putting a towel on the floor if I had to use the sink. Problem solved. For some reason I remembered that as I booked into the hotel this time around. I envisioned another breath taking view of the back alley and I cringed in what else may be waiting for me. Surprise!! My room faced the court yard and offered a terrific view of old town. Very nice. I should have lain back on the bed and breathe a sigh of relief, but I didn’t. I had to check the bathroom. Surprise again!!. Everything is good. Thank you! As with my other visits, I visit Prague during Christmas. I guess it’s the child in me, but I am drawn by sights and sounds of Christmas and Prague never lets me down. The smell of wood burning and ‘gluehwein’ draws me in. I casually walked down between the various vendors in the ‘old town’ Christmas Market and I get lost in the crowds. The town clock chimes every hour and you hear the sounds of people showing their delight in hearing the bells. Tourists and locals are shopping and it feels good just to be there. I buy a few things and take a deep breathe, I know where I will be next Christmas. If there is a definition for Christmas magic, this has to be it. You owe yourself a treat for sure. Prague is very busy at Christmas and December 24th is no exception. I planned for 6 months prior to this stay. I was told that finding a restaurant for dinner on this day is a very difficult task. December 24th is the Czech Republic’s special day where businesses close early and everyone, it seems, dines out. I booked a dinner reservation for myself at the Prague Intercontinental Hotel and their ‘ZLATA PRAHA’ restaurant. If there was one thing that could wipe away a bad first previous stay at this hotel, this is it. Superb!!. My waiter was perfect. I dined by myself and I thought I would be forgotten in a crowd of families and couples, but this was not the case. My waiter made regular enquiries if everything was fine. I was very impressed that he took the time to explain the wines they have. He could have poured myself a glass of wine and walked away without a blink, but he didn’t. He looked at me and smiled when I approved the wine. Top marks to him. My dinner choice was ‘carp’. Very nice. It was cooked to perfection and with the entrée of escargot, and a sinfully good desert, my dinner was complete. I experienced a Czech Christmas. I would recommend that restaurant to anyone. Thank you! As I said earlier, I was in Prague a few days earlier before my tour group arrived. I wanted to see as much as I could and I booked a few events through their local tourism company; ‘Prague Experience’. I wanted to try them as previous bookings through Canadian agencies were always a disaster. The people at these agencies really did not have the experience that I wanted. They would book tours and such, but they couldn’t say how these events were. Basically, they just took my money and that was it. Prague Experience gave me the information I needed. They live in this beautiful country and they have first-hand knowledge for the events they list or suggest. I booked through them day trips to Karlovy Vary, Kutna Hora, a dinner river cruise, a taxi pick up from the airport, a traditional Czech Evening dinner, a walking tour of Prague and a perfect stay at the ‘Savic Hotel’. This hotel is built from a 14th century Monastery .My description of this hotel? An absolutely beautiful place. I posted my thoughts about this special place on ‘Trip Advisor’. My write-up about it really tells it all. “The Hotel Savic is an absolute jewel. I heard great reviews of it and after staying there for a few days during Christmas 2016, it was the best place to stay. The hotel is built from a 14 century Monastery. I thought that the upgrades over the years would hide any sign of the buildings character, but that wasn't the case. The rooms have original woodwork that immediately tells you are experiencing part of history. Chandelier lighting , cherry wood furnishings and marble flooring in the washroom compliments the original woodwork so you could easily tell that they honor a special place.Another favorite of mine was how quiet it was at night. I could hear the sound of holiday shoppers passing by ,but it did not annoy me.I wanted to experience Prague and the Savic Hotel did not let me down. It is a beautiful place and I wouldn't think twice about staying there again”. Thank you Hotel Savic!! My cruise started December 26th in Nuremburg on the ship AmaSonata. It’s a beautiful ship that is only a couple years old. It has all the amenities you would expect from a 5 star hotel. My first impression of the ship when I arrived was how spectacular it was. The main lounge and bar area is quite large and has several couches and chairs. In the centre there is a ‘bar’ type table where they serve light lunches and late night snacks. Near the bar, there is a piano that the onboard musician plays several times a day. On this particular cruise, ‘Nickola’ (I hope I spelled that right) played a fantastic array of classical and ‘pop’ music. I lost track in how many times I asked him to play ‘Ave Maria’ and ‘Ballad pour Adeline’. If you ever read this Nickola, you are a fantastic pianist. Did I mention that there is an onboard bar? A fantastic place to meet people. There are several different categories of rooms that range from porthole viewing to French and walkout balcony’s. My room had both balconies and it was nice to sit out having a glass of wine watching the beautiful country side going by. This ship, like others has an exercise room. I visited it frequently during my trip. Not because I am a serious health nut, but because of the world class cuisine. The food is prepared by chefs whose skill in preparing mouth- watering delicacies is second to none. Each night there was something new. If you think you would have the ‘will’ power to walk away from the table when dessert comes by, you are a better person than I am. My love for river cruising will never fade. If one were to ask me what my favorite part of the cruise was, I would have to say that it was the people I met on the ship. I don’t know if I will see them again, but I will never forget them. Both the crew and the guests made this cruise special. If I ever had the opportunity to meet any of them again, I would consider myself lucky. They are top notched people and I am honored to have met you. Love you all!!! ‘Melodies of the Danube’ is my next cruise. I can hardly wait…………….

We went on the New Year cruise on this ship, and had a brilliant time. The staff were friendly, the ship itself was really nice, although a bit dated The dining room and lounge/ bar were pleasantly decorated though. The food was wonderful with a choice of three main courses. The cabins were surprisingly spacious for a small ship. However, this is why I am giving it 3 stars only. Firstly, there was an awful smell in our cabin which was cabin 120, which was on the lower deck. BUT, the main problem was the lack of hot water. It appears the ship cannot cope with 92 passengers who all want to have a shower, during late afternoon/early evening, or morning time. On the one special night, new years eve when everyone was dressed in their finest, I couldn't have a shower or wash my hair. This put a black cloud over the event. So, if you wish to go on this ship be prepared to have a shower around 4am, or miss dinner and have a shower when everyone else is eating.

My husband and I took the Rhine River Christmas market cruise from Basel Switzerland to Amsterdam in December 2016. My husband has limited mobility - in his case, he can walk unassisted but needs moments to stop and rest (hip replacement one year ago). The cruise itself was as expected from how Viking sells itself (high end luxury type cruise). We were assured that there were off-vessel excursions for my husband to participate in that involved very little walking. We found this to be totally untrue. The easy excursions still required a person to walk sometimes distances of half a mile to a bus. I wish someone had forewarned us of this prior to making our reservation. While i thoroughly enjoyed the cruise, my poor husband paid $5,000 to essentially sit on the vessel at each port since they don't make any accommodations for those with handicaps or limited mobility. Yes, i read the disclaimer but was assured by the booking agent AND the employees on the vessel that the distances were short enough for even those who couldn't walk far and that they would help us - which was not true. We hired a taxi in one location. The cities that you visit are amazing but you need more time than what is allotted for each stop over to experience the life. This is a great, albeit expensive, way to get a feel for the places you may want to visit in more depth in the future. In summary, the accommodations on the vessel Viking Vidar were wonderful. The food was overabundant and delicious. The employees did what they could and did it well in most cases. The tipping mentality during the daily briefings on the ship was obnoxious. The program director got more and more 'insistent' on this as the cruise progressed. If you have any particular questions, please feel free to contact me directly. We had 4 people on our vessel who either walked with a cane, had bad knees or other limited mobility who all wished they had been told the truth about the distances when they inquired with specific questions during their reservation process. I really wanted to focus this review on the mobility issue more than anything else. I wish someone had told me before we spent all that money on something only I could fully enjoy.

We took a day trip from Cologne to this town on the Rhine. When passing it on the river there are a lot of old castles in this area. We didnt expect the town to be so picturesque. We parked along the road & walked in through the tunnel. We have visited quite a few towns on the Rhine & Mosel but this town was a lovely surprise. The main street is cobblestones with hotels & immaculately painted & maintained old buildings along it. There are a lot of outdoor restaurants along the streets. Some of the buildings were from the 1600's. You can take a scenic walking path up to a castle above the town that has been turned into a youth hostel. We had a snack at the Post Haus which was another nice surprise. We entered through an archway into a big restaraunt area which had someone playing an electric piano. The food, beer & service were great. We really loved this town. It is definitely worth a visit.

Come on an AmaWaterways Christmas market cruise with me

ama waterways christmas cruise

My colleague Claire and I were beyond excited to be invited onto the AmaVerde, sailing the river Danube in late November with promises of a memorable festive experience. With our hats, scarves, and gloves packed, we were ready to take on the Christmas markets and visit the many unspoiled locations throughout this trip.

Bright and early, I landed in Munich from Manchester airport at 9am. There I met Claire and the rest of the AmaWaterways group before hopping on a coach to the AmaVerde in Vilshofen. Down the Autobahn and past the BMW production site, we soon found our ship, which stood out for all the right reasons. Donned in pine, twinkling lights, an array of baubles, and a huge tree at its head, we embarked on the ship and were warmly welcomed as we set foot inside. We could barely contain our excitement at the reception filled with more trees, a life-size Santa figurine, and huge snow globes with a flurry of constant snow inside. The festivities had begun, and we were ready and raring to go for the week ahead.

Our cabin had everything we needed, with a few surprises thrown in. Plush pillows, soft bedding, complimentary hand creams for the chilly, chapping weather, a mini-fridge, TV set up with as many Christmas films as you could digest, shower gels, slippers, and fluffy dressing gowns. We had no trouble fitting our big coats and jumpers into the wardrobes with more room to spare; the cupboards offered even more storage and had a fitted safe for all-important valuables.

After exploring the rest of the ship, meeting the other guests, and indulging in an afternoon tea, we were ready to test the bed for a much-needed recharge. This had to be my favourite part of our cabin — as soon as you sank into the pillow, you were promised a night of undisturbed, blissful sleep. It’s safe to say sleeping was never a worrisome thought for either of us.

Restaurants and Food

The food onboard was unlike anything I have had before. Each night bore a new dish, with a guaranteed flavour and a chance to taste foods and wines enjoyed in the countries we were passing through. With four countries in seven days, we were presented with a huge array of delicacies; still too good to put into words.

The AmaVerde had many places to enjoy these dishes. The main restaurant and wine bar, with comfortable seating, large tables, multiple course options, and a crew that raised the service bar each day. The lounge, for a more relaxed feel, included a 24/7 coffee machine, a permanently filled bowl of fruit and biscuits, iced tea, and water ready to be poured, breakfast served buffet-style, lighter lunch options, afternoon tea, and late-night bites in the evening. Finally, the chef's table is a beautifully decorated space with a tasting menu that we saved for our final night on board.

ama waterways christmas cruise

To say I was impressed by the food I tasted would be a huge understatement. Each mouthful was packed with flavour, and we left the table beyond satisfied with every dish.

Breakfast included pastries, toast with a large assortment of spreads, eggs Benedict, various meats, fruits, and the chef's special for the day. Lunch was served with appetisers, a few of my favourites including spring rolls, smoked salmon, salami, duck breast, white sausage, mixed salads, and goat cheese with peppers. The table was always accompanied by warm crispy bread rolls and whipped butter — enjoyed with soups like mushroom and lentil, to name a few. The main lunch itself was beyond my expectations — sweet and sour turkey with rice, egg noodles, bread dumplings in a cheese sauce, eggplant and potato curry with naan bread. Always available options included juicy burgers and Margherita pizzas, and toasted sandwiches served with chips and salad. Desserts included cheese and biscuits, cakes, ice cream… though at this point, I had no room!

After all this, dinner was all anyone could talk about; we were eager to get our menus and pick from such an expanse of options. My notable favourites had to be oven-baked sweet potato with yoghurt and chickpeas, herb-stuffed chicken and glazed vegetables, mustard-crusted rack of lamb, and slow-roasted beef Angus tenderloin. The presentation of each dish was incredible — each plate a work of art, each bite rich in flavour.

Around the mains, we were served bread rolls, soup, salads, sorbets and appetisers of delicacies from the country we had visited that day. Dessert included ice cups, rich chocolate cakes, crepes drizzled in sauce, apple and pumpkin pies, strudels, and chocolate mousse. European cheese and biscuits were always available, and our glasses were constantly filled with delicious local red and white wine.

ama waterways christmas cruise

Now, I’ve been wondering how I can describe the food at the chef’s table. A tempting tasting menu we had been delivered the night prior, along with a formal invitation to what would be our last dinner on board. As we arrived, we were immediately presented with a glass of blue champagne — a lovely nod at the blue Danube we had the privilege of sailing along that week. The menu was extraordinary — potato soufflé, gravlax, coconut and lemongrass soup with shrimp tartar, pan-fried Walleye fillet and Quinoa, cassis sorbet, slow-braised beef brisket and vegetables, dark chocolate soufflé with mango ice cream and chocolate macarons. Each dish was unique and delicious in its own way, a party in the mouth and a satisfying end to a fantastic week of food.

Our week was full of excursions perfect for all, with gorgeous sights and, of course, many Christmas markets!

Our first day in Vilshofen ended with an exclusive Oktoberfest celebration - where we tasted beer and listened to the live music entertainment. It was the perfect chance to meet the guests with whom we’d share the next week.

The next stop was beautiful Passau, where we had the City of Three Rivers walking tour. We met our tour guide and wandered through the cobbled streets, saw beautiful authentic buildings stuck in time, and were taken away with the gorgeous St Stephen’s Cathedral. It had a ceiling with elaborate paintings, statues covered in gold leaf, and the most detailed decor I have ever seen. It seemed every millimetre of the cathedral had been made with the utmost attention and intricacy.

ama waterways christmas cruise

Our third day was the start of the Christmas markets in Linz, as well as the City of Media Arts walking tour. Again, we witnessed some gorgeous architecture whilst hearing all about the city’s history. The buildings stretched high above us, each one unique. It was lovely to see such unspoiled architecture, still full of culture after so many centuries had passed. We then ventured into the city centre and saw the first of the markets. Stalls were filled with homemade gifts, gingerbread, candles, mulled wine, and roasted nuts. Despite the cold, the air surrounding the markets was warm and full of contrasting sweet and spicy smells.

We visited the town of Durnstein the next day, sampling the exceptional Wachau apricots and popping into several unique little shops. Then, we were off to Melk Abbey – quite literally a jaw-dropping building. Overlooking the Danube River, the yellow Melk Abbey stood tall and full of the most exceptional sights. Two-floor libraries with books dating back over 1,000 years, a ceiling full of dreamy paintings, rooms showcasing artefacts with incredible backstories, and the breathtaking church that seemed almost dripping in gold. It really was a feast for the eyes.

Vienna promised a day of festivities; with three markets to wander through from morning until evening. After a long walk savouring the buildings in the town, we were welcomed with a mug of mulled wine as we went to our first markets. We popped from stall to stall looking at homemade crafts, snow globes, festive dog treats, huge pretzels, meats, gingerbread, baubles, candles, paintings, and so much more.

ama waterways christmas cruise

After a quick lunch break back on the ship, we went out to visit the Schonbrunn markets – all lined up, surrounding the magnificent Schonbrunn Palace. They lit up warm and full of more homemade crafts, food, and drink. As evening started, we made the trip to the Rathaus markets, which were beyond our expectations. It truly felt like we were walking into a fairytale. The Vienna City Hall shone brightly in gold; with the tallest Christmas trees I’ve ever seen dotted around it. Gigantic baubles and snowmen glimmered across the gardens, with a huge carousel spinning magically in the centre. You could ice skate through trees, drink even more mulled wine, feast on generously stacked food, shop, and overall marvel at the exceptional scenery here. Everywhere I looked, there seemed even more to take in. It was a huge highlight of this trip!

Bratislava brought more markets, a big square full of elaborately decorated Christmas trees, a town with gorgeous churches, many shops, and beautiful tall buildings. It couldn’t have got any better, until we noticed the first snow we’d seen this year start to come down! Although we had seen many markets, and still had more to come, each one had something unique about it. It was lovely to see what each stall had to offer in terms of homemade objects and specialties. My favourite part of these markets was that they featured a huge outdoor slide, festively decorated and enjoyed by people both old and young!

Our trip finished perfectly in Budapest, but started by sailing past the famous Lipotvaros Parliament building. We ventured into town, experienced the last of the Christmas markets, and visited St. Stephen’s Basilica before heading back to the ship to experience some Folklore music and settle for dinner at the Chef’s Table. As it grew darker, we sailed past the Lipotvaros Parliament building again, to which it was illuminated magnificently. It finished off a week of sightseeing and marvelling at rich architecture in the best way.

Final Thoughts

This experience has certainly been one to remember. The destination highlight of this cruise for me must be our trip to Vienna — a place rich in culture, beautiful architecture, and charm.

However, I can’t not mention how beyond brilliant the AmaWaterways crew have been throughout the week. To me, they have been the main highlight of this cruise. Everything from the chocolates and gifts left on your bed every night, welcoming you back from cold excursions with hot drinks and towels, remembering your regular evening drink orders, to organising a very festive Santa visit! Their attentiveness to you as guests is phenomenal — I truly felt looked after during my time on board, and they really made this experience a memorable one.

7 Best Cities on the Rhine River: Stops On An AmaWaterways Cruise

T his past Christmas season, my husband and I explored some of the best cities on the  Rhine River with AmaWaterways . Our ship, the AmaMora, sailed from Basel, Switzerland to Amsterdam, Netherlands on an 8-day cruise. We visited everything from delightful small towns to bustling big cities.

*Disclosure: This post may contain affiliate links, which means we may receive a commission if you click a link and purchase something we have recommended. Please check out our  disclosure policy  for more details. Thank you for your support!

The Rhine River winds its way from Switzerland to the Netherlands, and there are many river boat tours that make their way along the route. Sailing on the river is a lovely way to see medieval towns and historic buildings from the comfort of a single accommodation.

If you are looking for a cruise that travels through the Rhine Gorge, visits charming towns, and shows you all the joys of river cruising, then an AmaWaterways Rhine River Cruise is for you.

Best Cities on the Rhine River Cruise You Won’t Want to Miss

Whether your journey begins or ends in Basel, be sure to spend some time exploring the 3rd-largest city in Switzerland. Basel is known for its museums and architecture and as a starting point for many Rhine cruises.

While in Basel you can visit the Kunstmuseum Basel (the city’s art museum), take a city walking tour , or go shopping.

We enjoyed fondue dogs and rösti at Basel’s Christmas market in Barfüsserplatz. There are several markets throughout the city, so plan to explore them all if you have time.

Our European river cruise began in Basel, but on the first day, we took a bus to the Swiss city of Lucerne (which isn’t on the Rhine River). We spent our day trip to Lucerne walking around the old town, learning about the city’s history, and exploring the local Christmas markets.

The town occupies an idyllic spot on the shores of Lake Lucerne and is surrounded by the Swiss Alps, including Mount Pilatus, which is just under 7,000 feet tall. If you have time, you can ride the cogwheel train or cable car to the top for epic views.

We didn’t have time, so we explored the Dying Lion Monument (a stone lion carved into the side of a rock to honor Swiss mercenaries killed in the 18th century), walked on the Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke – which is featured in just about every photo of Lucerne), and admired the architecture of the Old Town. There were several Christmas markets throughout town that we enjoyed.

We would recommend a traditional Swiss lunch at  Restaurant Fritschi  before returning to the ship.

3. Strasbourg

Strasbourg is located on the border of France and Germany and is one of my favorite cities in the  Alsace   region. It’s home to the European Parliament and the famous Parc de l’Orangerie. The day we visited with AmaWaterways it was snowing, and it seemed straight out of a fairy tale!

Our first stop was the Strasbourg Cathedral , also known as the Cathedral of Notre Dame. This impressive Gothic structure dates to the 15th century.

Inside you will find stunning stained glass windows, a massive organ, and an astronomical clock that dates to the Renaissance period. For panoramic city views, head up to the platform. (Note: this may be closed due to inclement weather).

Afterward, we strolled through La Petite France, a neighborhood known for its charming half-timbered houses, cobblestone streets, and local shops and cafés. We shopped at some of the local Christmas markets and grabbed delicious treats – bredele and mulled wine (highly recommend)!

Part of Strasbourg’s charm is found in wandering through its streets. Allow some time to visit all of the nooks and crannies before returning to the ship. This was one of the best cities on the Rhine River for exploring on our own.

If your cruise offers, be sure to take the evening trip to Gengenbach to see the world’s largest Advent calendar. The charming town sits on the edge of the Black Forest and its advent display is stunning.

4. Heidelberg

I was thrilled to  visit Heidelberg , as it rained for two days straight the last time we visited. This time we enjoyed a beautiful sunny day. Technically, Heidelberg isn’t on the Rhine River (it’s on the Neckar), but it was part of our cruise.

Heidelberg is one of the crown jewels of Baden-Württemberg in Germany. The city houses the oldest university in Germany, Heidelberg University, and one of the  coolest castles in Europe , Heidelberg Castle.

Our first stop was the castle, an imposing fortress that towers over the city and sits upon Königstuhl Hill. Originally, it was two castles, an upper and a lower, but in 1537 a lightning bolt destroyed the upper castle. Not to worry, this is still a massive complex of red sandstone ruins to explore.

Take time to walk through the castle grounds and former garden, find the Heidelberg Tun (the world’s largest wine barrel), and the pharmacy museum.

If you are exploring on your own, we highly recommend a guided walking tour . Be sure to check out the panoramic views from the observation terraces.

After spending time in the castle, make your to the Old Town (Altstadt). This can be reached by stairs or funicular.

In the charming Altstadt, you can see the famous Old Bridge, meander through Marktplatz, and if you have enough time, make your way to the Philosopher’s Walk (a walking path on the other side of the Neckar River).

We had enough time to enjoy a meal in the city center and walk along the main pedestrian shopping street, Hauptstrasse. Our favorite Christmas market is the one in Karlsplatz.

5. Rüdesheim

A stop in Rüdesheim offers a variety of opportunities for exploring this wine-making region.

The town is known for its Rheingauer riesling and Rüdesheimer coffee (made from 3 sugar cubes, coffee, and Asbach Uralt brandy). AmaWaterways had both a wine tasting and coffee tasting the night of our arrival in the city. Wine lovers will enjoy the riesling, but I chose the coffee and was not disappointed!

During the day, my husband and I split up and tried different activities. He chose the gondola ride over the vineyards and a hike. I chose to explore the Christmas markets, wandering along Drosselgasse (the main street) and shopping for souvenirs. It was also an option to visit Siegfried’s Mechanical Music Museum, but we opted to skip that.

That afternoon, our cruise ship traveled along the stretch of the Rhine known as the Rhine Gorge, Romantic Rhine, or Upper Middle Rhine Valley. This popular destination is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In this area, the banks of the Rhine are dotted with over 40 castles, all in different states of preservation. We saw Burg Rheinstein, Katz Castle, Pfalzgrafenstein Castle, and Klopp Castle to name a few.

In the evening, we visited  Lahneck Castle , a 13th century medieval castle overlooking the Rhine and Lahn rivers. This was our favorite excursion on the trip. Visiting a castle at night gives off all sorts of spooky vibes and amazing photo ops.

We had a tour with one of the docents and learned about the castle’s connections to the Knights Templar and Idilia Dubb, a Scottish girl who disappeared in the castle while on a family holiday in 1851.

It’s difficult to miss the city of Cologne, with the Cologne Cathedral dominating the skyline. We arrived in the city on the Saturday before Christmas, and to say it was crowded is an understatement.

We had an amazing city tour and kölsch beer tasting organized by AmaWaterways. Afterward, we spent time exploring the city’s Christmas markets and touring inside the cathedral.

Don’t miss the Heinzels Wintermärchen, dedicated to house elves. It has unique souvenirs, an ice skating rink, and some delicious  Christmas market foods .

Cologne is one of the largest cities on the Rhine along with Strasbourg and Rüdesheim. This makes it a great option for shopping.

Other places in Cologne that are worth visiting if you have extra time include the  Lindt Chocolate Museum  or taking a  kölsch brewery tour .

7. Amsterdam

Amsterdam was the final stop on our river cruise and a perfect place to wrap up our holiday travels. We planned an extra day here after the cruise ended to make the most of our time in the city.

AmaWaterways had arranged for a guided tour that took us through the city and included a stop at a local café. We sampled authentic Dutch apple pie , which honestly does not taste anything like the American version.

At its conclusion, we walked on our own to the  Anne Frank House for a tour . **Note: Be sure to make your reservations in advance.**

We spent an extra day exploring Amsterdam, visiting the Van Gogh Museum, and wandering through the Jordaan District.

Unfortunately, the Amsterdam Christmas market scene is not like the German one. There are many holiday decorations throughout the city, but the markets are few and far between. If you plan on souvenir shopping in the markets, we recommend doing so in Germany or France.

Conclusion: Best Cities on the Rhine River

These were some of the best cities on the Rhine River that we saw on our AmaWaterways cruise. If you’re traveling this route during the Christmas season, you are in for a magical experience!

For itineraries, Holland America's Alaska cruises and cruisetours are perfect for solo travelers, offering many opportunities to connect with fellow cruisers. Another favorite for singles is the line's fall voyages sailing from Boston to Québec City or Montreal.

The Beauty of Combination River Cruises

ama waterways christmas cruise

  • WHAT'S INCLUDED
  • DATES & PRICES
  • CONNECTIONS

Gary Paquin and his wife Marie are loyal guests who have truly made the most of their river cruise journeys. Meticulous planners, they have scoured our river cruise itineraries with their outstanding travel advisor Cindy, matching up embarkation and disembarkation ports on river cruises, so they can sail three river cruises in a row – and extend their vacations with our optional land packages before and after their sailings on top of that! So, why would anyone want to do this?

River Cruising Style

Our philosophy: once in Europe, maximize the time. Our first AmaWaterways river cruise was the 14-night Magnificent Europe, where we experienced 68 locks, 20 cities, 22 excursions, 5 countries and 5 rivers. When folks ask us which cruise they should do, we always recommend this one as their first. But when we disembarked in Amsterdam and our ship was sailing on to Basel, we realized we would much rather have explored Basel as part of our journey and maximized our time in Europe. That’s why we now do three sailings in one.

Repeat Ports of Call

We have experienced a few overlaps in some of the towns visited on our combination cruises, so we just pick a different AmaWaterways excursion. For example, during our first visit to Vienna, Austria, we took advantage of the walking tour and cathedral visit. On the second visit, we took the optional evening excursion to the Mozart and Strauss Concert at the Konzerthaus. What a beautiful performance, and AmaWaterways had arranged for exclusive front area seating, which made it much more dynamic and rewarding.

Variety is the Spice of Life

AmaWaterways offers plenty of variety in onboard entertainment, with some exceptional performers and guest speakers. On our Paris & Normandy river cruise, the night before we were going to the Normandy Beaches, a guest speaker talked about the events leading up to World War II. It added tremendous historical insight and enriched our experience. Also, on this river cruise, there was an outstanding performer who did the life of Édith Piaf, the famous French singer known for “La Vie en Rose.”

Gary and Marie’s Top Tips for New Combination Cruisers

  • Try to incorporate “pre-” and “post-” river cruise land packages before and after your river cruise to make your experience as inclusive as possible. We have enjoyed exploring more of Lisbon, Portugal; Prague, Czech Republic; both Barcelona and Madrid, Spain; and Lucerne, Switzerland. The beautiful Westin Palace Hotel in Madrid was centrally located, which made for convenient excursions on our own to the Prado Museum and so much more. Our most unforgettable event there was the optional flamenco show and dinner at Corral de la Moreira – what an emotional experience that was!
  • If you plan on taking a lot of photos, make sure you have enough memory for your camera. I had my own stroke of panic with this, although the Cruise Manager will have a good recommendation of where you can find memory cards in port.
  • Apply for the Global Entry Program through U.S. Customs and Border Protection. It’s a bonus because you can bypass all the lines. You just put your passport in a terminal, it takes your fingerprints and photo ID and you’re done. Plus, sign up for TSA Pre-Check so you don’t have to take your shoes and belt off at the airport.

Unpack once and stay awhile when combining two or more itineraries into one incredible river journey with our Combination River Cruise offer .
