Formed in 1993, Apocalyptica come from Helsinki, Finland. Consisting of classically trained cello players, they go on to create unique pieces of metal music.

The formation of the band came about when four very talented cellists came together to play covers of Metallica songs at the Sibelius Academy. In 1996, Eicca Toppinen, Paavo Lotjonen, Max Lilja and Antero Manninen were the bands line up and they managed to release their first studio album titled 'Plays Metallica by Four Cellos' this album only featured covers of Metallica songs. Later albums would see original releases by the band.

By 2007 the band had successfully released their sixth studio album 'Worlds Collide' which followed suit of their prior albums and contained both original songs and covers of songs which had already been established.

Apocalyptica have worked alongide many musicians including: Corey Taylor form Slipknot, Stone Sour, Adam Gontier, Gavin Rossdale and Metallica themselves. The band performed live with Metallica in celebration of Metallica's 30th Anniversary.

Since the start of the band two of the original members have left, those being Max Lilja and Antero Manninen. New members have therefore joined, those being: Mikko Siren and Perttu Kivilaakso.

In 2008 Apocalyptica became the first Finnish band to top the US Billboard Rock Chart as they became no.1 with their song ' Don't care' This song has been incredibly successful for the band has even featured on episode 16, season 8 of the television series Smallville.

As of 2014, Apocalyptica have released 8 albums, it has been revealed that they will release their 8th studio album in 2015, the title is currently unknown.

Live reviews

Apocalyptica is one of the most unique and interesting metal bands out there, reason being that the band consists of all cello players, except the drummer who gives the band’s music a much needed punch in sound. All of the band members are also classically trained so you know you are in for a stellar performance when you see these guys live. The band initially started out as a Metallica tribute band playing all of their classic hits with some other cover songs thrown in such as Pantera’s “Domination”. Currently the band performs original songs that they composed, as well as still playing some cover songs. It shouldn’t be too much of a surprise that a band consisting of members who play classical instruments would want to perform in a metal band, as much of metal music has a strong classical influence.

Apocalyptica is able to create a loud, rich sound with their cellos. They run them through distortion pedals, and play rapid rhythms reminiscent of thrash metal. Although most of Apolcalyptica’s sound encompasses the metal genre, they have sometimes veered from that style and have incorporated Middle Eastern and world music into their performance. The band also incorporates theatrics that one would expect to see at a metal show into their performance. The members all have long hair that they shake around stage when head-banging, layers of fog fill the stage, and intense strobe lights flash to the rhythm of the music. The band is increasingly growing a larger fan base with already having sold four million albums. They have also gained the respect of many notable musicians who have collaborated with them in the past including Joe Duplantier from Gojira and Gavin Rossdale from Bush. Apocalyptica is guaranteed to put on an intense performance that is full of energy and that is the perfect representation of a sophisticated metal show.

Apolcalyptica, the Finnish metal rockers are one of the most unique bands on the circuit due to the fact they have substituted their guitars for cellos. The outcome is a dramatic take on a classic genre and with an expert drummer to keep the whole show in time, the group has gone on to entertain crowds globally.

The sound the musicians achieve is staggering and you have to take a moment from the pulsing rock to appreciate the musical abilities of the cello players. The crowds are made up of loyal fans and new converts who all remain continuously enthusiastic thanks to the baiting of Eicca Toppinen.

The band acts as a tight machine as they fly through a set taken from their spanning discography. Having began as a Metallica cover band, it seemed fitting for them to play 'Seek & Destroy' in their unique manner. The crowd claps the band on during an anthemic rendition of 'I Don't Care' as the stage lights become frenzied and illuminate the musicians as you see them ferociously playing the strings. An unconventional take on metal that really works, Apocalyptica could possibly be innovators of the genre.

Apocalyptica were a revelation for me, not having seen them live before! I loved the two-part separation of the concert- first being more soft the second being more hardcore.

The stage setting was just perfect! Simple screens behind each one of the members with discreet shapes and colours and the name of the band showing up high set the mood perfectly for what was about to occur on stage! Simple but just right! Music was the highlight of the night rather than the fancy colours and lights.

Apocalyptica were humorous with Eicca and Pertu taking centre stage in this aspect! Loved the jokes about the cold weather and the “rival” 2Cellos!

The acoustics of the room were great enabling us to enjoy the music which was amazing as always!

I will definitely do this again and again!!

Smashing! These guys are not just amazing musicians, they also know how to put on a show. I was really happy that they did a mix of old and new songs, with and without singer, with and without drums, even a few metallica covers. I'm not a huge fan of their new stuff, yet really enjoyed the concert.

The sound quality, as it's usual, was the only thing to woe about. The supporting band, vamps, was ok, and they also teamed up with apocalyptica for a brand new song.

Happy that I finally got the chance to see them live.

It was an amazing experience to see them live! The highlights for me were Bitersweet, Inquisition Symphony and In the hall of the mountain king by Grieg, when they presented the crowd a nice surprise. Their new song Till Death Do Us Part was great too, but the downsides were the old songs sang by the vocalist they chose to go on tour with them. His voice is too pop-ish for my taste, so for example "Not Strong Enough" and "I don't care" sounded completely different.

Hands down, best concert I've ever been to. Their set was amazing, and paired with the House of Blues venue and extremely active audience it made a memory for a lifetime. All the members of the band were extremely interactive with the audience - and damn are they the biggest flirts! Please come to San Diego again soon, Apocalyptica!

"Fifty Shades of Cello"

You've got to see them. They don't take themselves too seriously and they encourage the audience to sing along and rock out. There are some very powerful and stirring moments where the whole audience is entranced by their powerful abilities ..

And they played my favorite Metallica song, One. \m/

Amazing show. Very entertaining band at a great venue (Ace of Spades in Sacramento). Would see them again in a heartbeat. It's hard to believe they make so much interesting music with just cello's and a drum set. Listening to the album you would swear there are guitars and basses galore.

Simply amazing! One of the best concerts I've ever been! The sound was perfect! No echoing, no ups and downs. The image and light show was fantastic! The band's performance and charisma were way above my expectations. A was a fan before, but now I love them!

Concert and the place was better than I expected. No matter how they play the first half while all the audience is seating, they eventually let people to come closer and listen them as it is a metal concert. So don't worry if your view is not that good.

This week, symphonic metal group Apocalyptica announced 2024 tour dates.

In conjunction with their upcoming album, Plays Metallica Vol. 2 , new concerts are scheduled at venues across Europe from June into late November. The Finnish band also have festival performances in Florida and Ohio.

Finnish cello rockers APOCALYPTICA have announced a European tour in support of the follow-up to their legendary debut record. "Plays Metallica Vol. 2" tour will continue the journey that began in 1996 when cellists from Helsinki's world-renowned Sibelius Academy played symphonic tribute to the biggest of the big four — heavy metal titans METALLICA . In a 2019 interview with Australia's Heavy magazine, APOCALYPTICA 's Paavo Lötjönen spoke about the impact of the band's 1996 "Plays Metallica By Four Cellos" debut. Consisting solely of METALLICA covers, the album cast a spotlight on the group's classically trained abilities, setting the stage for them to release their own material in ensuing years. Since the 20th anniversary of "Plays Metallica By Four Cellos" in 2016, APOCALYPTICA has been playing the album in full at select live dates.

"It's been really fantastic," he said about playing "Plays Metallica By Four Cellos" . "If we are talking about music in common, if you listen to music you used to listen to 20 years ago, it's a weird thing somehow, it brings all the same feelings back. Like, you are feeling when we were 20 years younger. I would call music a time machine in that sense. The same happens for us when we play those songs. Somehow the same feelings come back to us when we felt like we were 25 years or 20 years old and touring with a shitty van around Europe playing venues. This time, all the venues are bigger and really portioned nice. There's lots of people, and it's not too hot and shitty on the stage. It's a lot of joy and fun to play those songs. The magic of METALLICA has not disappeared anywhere. It's still really strong and passionate music. It's a lot of fun to play. We have never played this well as we are playing at the moment. I'm happy to see we have learned something during these years."

In 2015, Lötjönen and APOCALYPTICA 's Perttu Kivilaakso spoke to Austria's Mulatschag about what it was like to join METALLICA on stage at the Fillmore in San Francisco as part of the week-long celebration of the band's 30th anniversary in December 2011. Perttu said: "Of course we felt very privileged being included amongst all those amazing artists. And after the thing, what we have done during our career, it has been pleasant to realize and notice that, actually, the METALLICA guys, who are the reason for us to start to do something like this, that they do respect us at least that much that they wanted us to be a part of this big celebration of their career. Of course, it was crazy. I remember that when we started to play 'One', I'm starting this song and James Hetfield is just next to me, and I'm thinking, when I was 13 years old, he was my biggest idol and now we are playing together. So it's absurd, but just natural and logical in other terms."

Added Paavo : "You know, the connection to METALLICA has been really super great all these years. We played first time as a support to them already in '96. It was actually our fifth show for a proper rock and roll audience, and we were supporting METALLICA , so it was quite crazy. And since that, we have played many times with them at same festivals and… Let me say that the connection with METALLICA is really cool and really nice."

Shakira's 2024 tour coming to NYC: See when and where

Grammy-winning Colombian superstar Shakira is bringing her world tour through New York City later this year.

Shakira announced Tuesday the 12 U.S. cities and two Canadian cities being visited on the first leg of her world tour, which begins in North America on Nov. 2 in California and ends Dec. 15 in Detroit.

The tour will make just one stop in the city, on Dec. 5 when she comes to Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Here's a full list of stops on the tour:

International tour dates are expected to be announced soon.

Tickets go on sale to the public at 10 a.m. on April 22. Shakira's Wolfpack members who join before Wednesday at 11:59 p.m. can access a pre-sale beginning at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 19.

For the first time since 2018, Shakira will officially tour North America as part of her upcoming ‘LAS MUJERES YA NO LLORAN WORLD TOUR’ (which translates to “women no longer cry”).

Midway through the 14-concert run, the three-time Grammy winner is scheduled to stop in at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on Thursday, Dec. 5.

At all shows, fans can expect to hear cuts from the Colombian icon’s recently released album that shares a name with the tour.

Hits like “Hips Don’t Lie,” “Whenever, Wherever,” and “Dia De Enero” will likely sneak into the setlist as well.

For those who can’t wait to get their hands on tickets, they can be secured as soon as today.

Although inventory isn’t available on Ticketmaster until Monday, April 22, fans who want to ensure they have tickets ahead of time can purchase on sites like Vivid Seats before tickets are officially on sale.

On March 22, Shakira released her 12th studio album “Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran.”

Comprised of 17 tracks featuring big-name collaborators like Cardi B, Bizarrap, Grupo Frontera, Rauw Alejandro, and Ozuna among others, the 47-year-old songstress sticks to español this time around. However, whether or not you speak Spanish is beside the point; Shakira’s music this time around is so catchy that you won’t mind looking up what the lyrics mean on Google Translate.

Highlights include the dance floor-ready hit “Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53,” the infectious mariachi-inspired “El Jefe” with Fuerza Regida, and the icy “TQG” featuring Karol G.

While the whole album slaps, we’d be remiss if we didn’t shout our favorite track: the disco-flavored “Cohete.” We can’t stop listening.

Shakira has announced a tour in support of her new album, Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran . The tour begins in California in November and extends into December. It’s billed as a world tour, so more dates are likely forthcoming. See Shakira’s schedule below.
