Heartland Prowler Review and Video Tour

In this Heartland Prowler review, we are going to take a look at one of the most popular campers from one of the best travel trailer brands in the industry. In addition to construction, features and floor plans we’ve recorded an exterior and interior video tour to help you see what this travel trailer has to offer. Let’s get started.

The Heartland Prowler has been around for close to 50 years and according to Heartland holds the distinguished title as the #1 selling RV of all time. (I could not independently verify this claim by Heartland please take it for what its worth.) The newer generation of Prowlers offers deep slides, tall ceiling, and features that are more luxurious than previous models all at a very reasonable price.

Construction

This camper features wood framing and aluminum siding. The roof is a walkable rubber membrane roof with an R-Value of 7. The same R-Value as the floor and sidewalls. The decking is 5/8″ and is bolted directly to the frame. Wall studs are on 16″ centers. The front of the Prowler features an aerodynamic profile with a diamond plate stone guard.

Exterior Features

The Heartland Prowler’s exterior features are in line with other travel trailer manufacturers. The exterior feature list includes:

The Prowler Convenience Package adds power stabilizer jacks, power awning with LED lights, heated and enclosed underbelly and a few more items.

The pass-through storage on the Prowler is huge.

The Heartland Prowler is available in 19-floor plans. The floor plans have a variety of layouts that will probably accommodate just about anyone. You’ll find plans with rear bathrooms, rear entry, some have bunk beds, and some have the kitchen in the rear. You also have the choice of one toy hauler floor plan the 261TH.

Interior Features

The interior on the Heartland Prowler is very well laid out for maximum use of space and well equipped with a host of standard features. You’ll find LED lighting throughout the interior space, cable TV hookup, AM/FM/USB/Bluetooth radio, USB charging ports, interior speakers and much more.

There is a convertible sleeper sofa in the living area. Tammy is usually very critical of RV sofas since she finds many of them to be too firm. That was not the case with the sofa in this camper. It was very comfortable and provided a very good seating area with good support.

Another feature we liked about the inside of the Prowler was the in-floor ducted heat. Though it wasn’t active when we did our walkthrough we prefer that type of heating system rather than a ceiling mount-type.

In the kitchen area, you will find all stainless steel appliances. There is a nice sized refrigerator, microwave oven, and a stainless steel residential style sink. The 3-burner cooktop is a decent size and above it, you’ll find a range hood with light and exhaust fan.

The bathroom is a dry bath meaning there is a separate shower and toilet and includes an ABS shower surround.

The bedroom specifically on the 240RB plan is just large enough for the mattress and a little bit of space on either side of the bed. There is a small wardrobe on either side as well as under bed storage, electric outlets, and mirrors on the wardrobe doors.

Safety Features

The Prowler comes with 6 standard safety features that include a propane alarm, break-away switch, deadbolt on the entrance door, dual hitch safety chains, smoke alarms, and multiple egress windows.

Optional Equipment

In addition to the standard equipment, the Heartland Prowler comes with a selection of optional features that enhance both the exterior and interior. These are just a few of the optional features you can purchase:

Owner Reviews

Unfortunately, I could not find many reviews by owners. The view that  I did find either considered the Prowler a good buy or a terrible purchase due to construction quality issues. Suffice it to say I could not find enough information to make a definitive assessment of quality and after-purchase satisfaction. If a Heartland Prowler is a travel trailer you might be interested in join the RV forums and ask questions. Most RV owners will tell it like it is.

2016 Heartland Prowler 30P RLS Review

The Heartland Prowler comes in 17 floorplans – some of these are perfect for a bachelor, while others are ready for the whole family. We decided to explore the 30P RLS because we think it’s the ideal Prowler for a family of four. The Prowler 30P RLS has a gross vehicle weight rating of 9,400 lbs, dry weight of 7,786 lbs, and hitch weight of 838 lbs. It has a width of 8’0”, height of 11’4” and length of 35’3”. For liquids, the Prowler has a fresh water tank capacity of 42 gallons, gray water tank capacity of 35 gallons, and black water tank capacity of 35 gallons.

Let’s start with the Prowler’s construction. Built on a steel I-beam frame, the Prowler is strong, reliable and durable. It has a 0.030” aluminum front and rear exterior, along with a 0.024” aluminum metal exterior. It features an R-7 rated fiberglass insulated sidewall, roof and floor, and 5/8” marine grade floor decking. Its wood-tapered roof rafters are equipped with 4-1/2” trusses. An aerodynamic radius front profile adds ease and stability to your road trips, while the finished pass-through storage makes it easy to store large and cumbersome objects. The one-piece seamless rubber roof is easy and safe to walk on, while the electric-powered slides expand the space.

On the outside, the Heartland Prowler looks like your typical modern trailer home. Its radial tires have steel rims and E-Z lube axels. A rain gutter comes with extra long drip sprouts, protecting your home from water damage, while the diamond plate stone guard protects your trailer from scratches. The patio light comes with an inside switch, making it easy and safe for you to see what’s going on outside your trailer. Radius tinted safety glass windows provide your home with natural light, while also giving you privacy.

When you walk inside, you’ll find yourself in a hallway that leads to the kitchen. The microwave oven is equipped with a carousel and all the drawers have ball bearing drawer guides, which make it easy to open and close your drawers. A 50/50 residential-style sink provides you with two separate spaces to wash and rinse your dishes. The three-burner cooktop comes with a range hood, equipped with a light and exhaust fan. Keep your perishables in the double door refrigerator with built in freezer. All cabinetry is equipped with stainless steel knobs and pulls. A spacious island gives you ample room to prepare food, whether you’re cooking by yourself or with an assistant. To top it off, the kitchen also comes with a built-in knife rack, spice rack and pullout trash can. When dinner’s ready, you can serve it at the dinette table, located right across from the stove and fridge.

After a big dinner, you and the family will probably want some relaxation time. You can call dibs on the sleeper sofa, which converts into a bed, or you can sit on one of the comfortable sofa chairs. The extra large skylight in the living room adds warmth and sunlight to the space, and at night, the LED interior lights will keep things bright. An entertainment center sits right across from the sofa and it’s equipped with a TV and cable TV hook-up with RG6 coax cabling. The AM/FM/CD/DVD entertainment system also has Bluetooth capability.

Moving to the bathroom, you’ll find all the essentials, including a porcelain toilet that comes with foot flush. The ABS tub surround comes with a designer shower curtain, while the medicine cabinet has a built-in shelf, allowing you to store your toiletries and bathroom essentials. Last but not least, the Heartland Prowler bathroom also has a towel ring and bathroom power vent, keeping your towels and the air as fresh as possible.

When you’re ready to recharge, you can head to the Master bedroom. The queen bed comes with an innerspring mattress, and the finished under-bed storage comes with gas struts. For extra storage, you also get a deep overhead storage cabinet above the bed and a shirt wardrobe. Both sides of the bed come with electric outlets, allowing you to keep your phone charged and alarm clock plugged in. Equipped with a TV hook-up, you can watch your favorite program before getting your beauty sleep.
