The Michael C. Carlos Museum

Immerse students in the vibrant world of art and culture at Emory’s Michael C. Carlos Museum. Take a flight through history! The Ask. Challenge. Educate. (ACE) field trip program offers 1st-5th grade students interactive STEM experiences highlighting goal setting and problem-solving skills. Another great field trip location is the Fernbank Museum of Natural History . Zoo Lesson Plan

The giraffe’s tongue is black to prevent sunburn while eating in the hot sun. Their spots, which are as unique as humans fingerprints, are designed for camouflage. And they need less sleep than any other mammal, using the time instead to browse for food.

When you go to the zoo, be on the lookout for the clever ways animals adapted to their surroundings and developed traits that help them survive.

Field Trip Programs

Enhance your students’ Fernbank experience with a school program. Fernbank educators use active discussion, fun visuals, live specimens and unique artifacts to engage students.

All programs are correlated with Georgia Standards of Excellence and last 30 to 90 minutes. Programs are available from August–May. Call or register online for your requested date, time and program.

Auditorium Programs (min 10, max 170 per session)

Offered Tues., Thurs. and Fri. at 10:15 a.m., 11:15 a.m. and 12:15 p.m.

Science comes alive with discussion, demonstrations and exciting visuals in our auditorium-style programs! Discover the amazing, dynamic processes of Earth and Life Sciences. Each program lasts 45 minutes and is designed to accommodate large groups. 

Investigations (min 10, max 30 per session)

Offered Mon. and Wed. at 10:15 a.m., 11:15 a.m. and 12:15 p.m.

Sharpen your science skills in our inquiry-based investigations. Observe and explore the worlds of Earth and Life Sciences through hands-on activities and experiments. Each investigation lasts  45 minutes .  Note: Some investigations are designed for outdoor exploration; please review program summaries for details.

Creature Features (min 10, max 30 per session)

Meet our live teaching animals in an animal encounter. Learn about the incredible adaptations and life histories of our charismatic critters. Each encounter is scheduled for a  30-minute block and includes three animals from our collection of reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates.

Guided Fernbank Forest Tours (min 10, max 40 per session)

Offered by request, Mon. - Fri. at 10:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.

Gain a better understanding of the interconnected Piedmont forest ecosystem and the importance of biodiversity during this  90-minute interpretive tour of Fernbank Forest. Participants will explore the ecology and characteristics of an old-growth forest while developing a deeper appreciation for the natural world.

Guided WildWoods Walk, Grades K-5 (min 10, max 40 per session)

Students will gain a better understanding of the interconnected Piedmont Forest ecosystem and the importance of native biodiversity during a guided interpretive tour of Fernbank Wild Woods. During this 45-minute tour, participants will see first-hand the ecology and characteristics of this old-growth forest while developing an appreciation for the natural world.

Environmental Education Field Trips

At WAWA, we believe in the power of PLAY! We have developed our pedagogy to link STEAM subject matter to five principles of learning; the power of play, place-based learning, cultural relevance, inquiry instruction, and social constructivism.

School groups can join us for a program onsite or virtually that satisfies their curriculum goals.

Please note the following before booking a field trip:

Please request trips at least three (3) weeks in advance. Contact us about cancellations at least one (1) week in advance at [email protected] .

Fields trip days are only on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. 

Content is usually 90 minutes and we have picnic tables available for lunch. The average field trip is ~3 hours.

Most Field Trips will be held at the Outdoor Activity Center (1442 Richland Rd. SW Atlanta, GA 30310).

In the event that your program requires the location to be hosted at one of our other sites, we will confirm with the trip's contact person. Our other locations include:

BEFORE YOUR VISIT A staff naturalist will call you several weeks prior to your visit to help you plan your trip. At this time, they will, with your assistance, plan the details of the visit and will furnish additional pre-trip material.

ACQUIRING CHAPERONES  Groups at the OAC are led by highly qualified trail leaders. If possible, we limit trail groups to 15 students or fewer.  However, we feel that an adult accompanying each group is highly essential – to provide assistance in discipline and safety.  Therefore, the OAC now requires that schools bring 1 adult for every 10 children participating in the program. If you wish to develop a program utilizing volunteers in teaching environmental education it would be a good opportunity to provide some observational experience and training.

IMMEDIATELY BEFORE YOUR VISIT Please send home any permission slips required by the school, and please share the clothing information that is listed below. Don’t forget to inform adults!

DIVIDE YOUR CLASS INTO GROUPS ON THE DAY OF Prior to your visit, please divide your class into small groups, 20-22 children per group.

WHAT TO WEAR Wear play clothes (we get dirty!), long socks and sturdy shoes, and bring any appropriate weather gear (rain boots, rain jackets, warm hat, large coat, etc.). Please no sandals or flimsy footwear (we will hike), wear sneakers or hiking shoes/boots. Apply sunscreen and insect repellent prior to the trip for a comfortable experience.   YOUR CLASS VISIT Your visit will consist of walks on trails through our “outdoor laboratory”; outdoor study projects; indoor interest centers- all led by qualified trail leaders.

WEATHER We will move forward with the program RAIN OR SHINE! However, in special conditions, we will need to reschedule the program including thunderstorms, heavy rain, or temperatures below 20 degrees. We will be in touch the day before should the weather dictate a cancellation. 

LUNCH Pack lunches in large cardboard boxes by classroom; individual lunches and drinks marked with names. These boxes may be used to return your refuse to the school. 

***Conservation activity*** Weigh lunches beforehand at school and the garbage afterward, the students will learn about the amount of waste created by one class. Also, recycling is a required practice. Drink bottles and cartons should be placed in the appropriate containers, half or uneaten vegetables and fruits can be composted so leave them on the picnic tables rather than throwing them in the garbage cans.

Please park in the designated area.  Send a representative to the center to inform the receptionist of your arrival. Guide your class to the front steps, bringing your lunches with you. There is a handicap path and ramp to the right of the parking lot if needed.

Atlanta History Center offers multi-disciplinary and interactive guided tours for students of all ages that are educational and fun.

Students are given the opportunity to handle historic objects from our collection in addition to touring our award-winning exhibitions, historic houses and gardens. Tours are designed to match the state social studies requirements.

TripTracker Overview

The process of requesting transportation for field trips, special programs and after school programs will now be done electronically through TripTracker . This Electronic Field Trip (eFieldTrip) system is a Web-based program that will enable you to request, edit, and track the status and billing of a fieldtrip request.

Please note: Requesters will need to enter a request more than 30 days before the bus is needed to ensure the bus request is approved and scheduled in a timely fashion. TripTracker will prevent a Requester from submitting a request within 20 days of the trip date. However, in the case of extenuating circumstances, the Field trip department should be contacted to determine if the trip can be scheduled.

General Field Trip Guidelines/Rules

Schools may not solicit nor offer a trip opportunity to bus drivers. Extra work must all be issued by the Transportation Department.

• Student supervision. On a field trip, student behavior management is the responsibility of the coach, chaperone or teacher. If there are behavior issues on the bus, the bus drivers will defer to the coach, chaperone or teacher once to address the behavior, if the behavior is not addressed, then the bus driver will assume responsibility.
• Bringing extra items on a trip. Ice-chests, equipment bags and boxes. These items are to be loaded through the front door and may not sit in the aisle and thus obstruct movement. If the bus is damaged in the process of loading an item, that cost be assigned to the trip sponsor.
• Parking fees for school buses. If parking fees are required, it is the responsibility of the requesting school or department to pay for parking fees.
• The second week in August 10 through the second week in May.
• School days: 9:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. and then 4:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
• Weekend and Holiday field trips are allowed during the date ranges above.

ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships Begin in Atlanta on Thursday

The Braves Country Road Trip is coming to two Alabama cities

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WBRC ) - The Atlanta Braves have been on the road for their Braves Country Road Trip since March 2024. With visits to multiple cities in Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, South Carolina, and North Carolina, the experience is coming to Birmingham and Tuscaloosa this month.

On May 11, visit the UFL Birmingham Stallions football game from 1:30 – 5:30 p.m.  for a chance to experience Truist Park right here in Birmingham. Fans will have the opportunity to “Post at the Plate” for their own customizable baseball card. Free giveaways will also be available to fans.

Unable to make the Saturday event? Head to the University of Alabama’s baseball game on May 12 from noon until 4 p.m. for the experience.

NFL player, Georgia First Lady host students for reading of ‘A Magnificent Field Trip’

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - On Wednesday, dozens of Pre-K students from Heard’s Ferry Elementary School visited the Georgia Governor’s Mansion for a reading of the book “A Magnificent Field Trip to the Governor’s Mansion” authored by former NFL player Malcolm Mitchell.

Mitchell played in the NFL for one year and won a Super Bowl ring with the New England Patriots. He also played for the Georgia Bulldogs.

Mitchell is the CEO of the Share the Magic Foundation, whose mission “to inspire kids to read to a better future.”

“Sometimes when you’re growing up, the only things that you see are what your neighborhood offers,” Mitchell said. “Books expose you to more information and new realities and in turn you begin to hope and dream of things that you may not see every day, and that’s what I call the magic.”

The book follows the author and a group of students on a journey where they meet the Governor, the First Lady, their dogs Rhett and Bailey and even some chickens and bees who are part of a nature trail experience at the Mansion.

Georgia First Lady Marty Kemp worked with Mitchell to create a book that could challenge readers and celebrate big changes at the Governor’s Mansion.

“When I became the First Lady of Georgia, I wanted to update the Governor’s Mansion in hopes that it would truly be ‘Georgia Grown’ and showcase all that makes our state such a great place to call home,” said Kemp. “Those changes include updates to engage children and families. It is always an honor to welcome you to the People’s House.”

The students got to listen to a reading of the book and explore the inside and outside of the mansion. They got to explore the chicken coop, watch the honey bees and got a special visit from the Governor.

Is A Trip to Citi Field The Cure for Slumping Braves Slugger?

The Atlanta Braves have been a good team this season despite some early offensive struggles. 

The lack of home runs this season from the offense that tied MLB’s single-season homer record last season has been the biggest storyline. After hitting 307 homers in 2023, Atlanta enters the weekend series with just 36, good for a tie for 18th and two behind the MLB average. 

But another storyline that’s starting to get traction is the prolonged struggles of first baseman Matt Olson. One of baseball’s best sluggers last season, hitting a league-leading 54 homers and league-leading 139 RBIs with a NL-best .604 slugging percentage, the lefty first baseman is hitting just .200 with a .352 slug. Olson’s mired in a 7-62 slump, one that would look a lot worse had he not picked up hits in each of the team’s last three games. 

Olson’s last homer came on April 7th, more than a month ago, and he has just a .540 OPS since that victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks. 

What’s Citi Field have to do with it? 

In the great team tradition of Chipper Jones, who was so good against the Mets that he named one of his sons after New York’s Shea Stadium, Matt Olson’s historically been pretty good against the Mets in Citi Field. (Jones batted .313 with nineteen home runs in 88 career games in Shea Stadium).

Since 2022, Matt Olson is batting .288 versus the Mets in Citi Field and has launched five home runs out of that ballpark. It’s been a good hitting environment overall for Olson, as he’s put up sixteen RBIs and scored fifteen runs in just sixteen games. 

The pitching matchups also lend some hope for Olson to regain his form, as well. Against Mets Friday night starter Jose Quintana, who Olson last faced on April 11th, Olson went 1-3 with a triple and is 5-15 against in his Braves career. 

While Olson hasn’t faced Saturday’s starter, prospect Christian Scott, he at least has some familiarity with Sunday night’s starter Luis Severino. He went 0-2 with a walk and run scored last season when the Braves met Severino’s old team, the New York Yankees, on August 15th. Prior to that, Olson went 1-5 with an RBI double off of Severino all the way back in 2018 as a member of the Oakland A’s. 

Let’s hope the Atlanta slugger can get back to his slugging ways, starting this weekend.
