Bar à la Tour

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

What a serendipitous find as we were walking back from dinner one night in Paris. Loved the vibe, loved the people. Such an authentic place - definitely not on the tourist list. We were treated to some liveliness from the bar staff. One of our... favorite discoveries. More

This is a great little bar in the heart of Paris, just off the Rue Rivoli and not far from the Lourve etc. The ambiance is freindly with a local feel. The service and snacks are excellent. Go here for a real local Parisian experience.

Been staying in the hood for years and just found this place last week. Was walking by and out came the owner and Monsieur Alex. Alex is a active and cute yorkie who was checking me out before running off to join his master. We... returned multiple times and found friendly locals, great charcuterie/tapas and a nice chilled rose. Great for an early evening snack or just a cold beer and conversation. Will be back. More

Thank you for your comment ! Alex was very happy to meet you too. See you again with plaisure.

After a day of tours , stopped on the sidewalk for a cool drink and a mid evening snack . Pleased with selection and service ! The amenities are the quirky part . Be sure to look around and get acquainted , good folks !!!

Had a lovely week in Paris for our Silver Wedding Anniversary and found this lovely bar to finish the day off Nice lady in there really friendly please try it

Thank you very much ! I remember you, you are very sympatical. See you with pleasure.

We were very hungry and saw that the prices were OK. ..the lady didn't not even dare to smile or welcome us in a decent way. I took a vegetable soup because I am vegan, since she could not even offer some French fries.... Just... two spoons and I was going to throw up! It was probably gone off since a couple of days. My friends took the lentils with sausages....an offence to sausages and porks in general. Another friend took pasta with salmon( asked with the vegetable variant from the menu but arrived without)and after 1 minute asked if she cool change with a fish dish. The "lady" said no because the pasta was ready....ready probably since a week before. Then she got back to her crosswords and didn't care until we wanted to pay. When taking the plates away she didn't mind asking how it was when saw that my bowl was still full,( probably she already knew it was horrible). In some places they wouldn't make you pay for something that could send you to hospital... surprise surprise, water on the menu cost about 3€ but on the bill it was 6.80 because, she said, the one on the menu was a glass of water (not specified). Overall one of the worst places in the world where I ate. More

Even if it's cheap, food is frozen and cooked in a microwave. You can find better food nearby for a slightly higher price.

400m away from a noisy tourist bar is this piece of real France. You could be walking into a cafe bar in rural Normandy which is why the locals drink here. .. covid rules taken seriously…not posh and not tourist prices. Give it a try... for a pre dinner drink and you may well go back for lunch and another apero More

The bartender was very rude to us. She seemed like she didn’t like Americans. We were also overcharged for our drinks. More

Je ne comprends pas cette remarque. Toutes les nationalités sont bienvenues, si les personnes sont sympathiques. De plus, les prix... More

Not far from the Louvre and tucked away a little bit this is a small and friendly bar with a smattering of locals and a character of a host who was very friendly. Ordered a light lunch baguette which was very good and a nice... local beer. Great little place for a respite with friendly people. More

Thanks a lot ! See you later with pleasure.

I was staying in a nearby hotel with my teenage son, unfortunately my beautiful young wife could not be with us on this trip. There was very good background music and everything was comfortable. The small food menu looked very good although I did not... have the chance to sample it. The Barmaid, Mary, and the local clients were friendly and cheerful. Au revoir! More

Thanks a lot for your visit and your comment ! Sympatical people is always welcome à La Tour ! See you with pleasure. Marie

Dropped in for some light lunch. Bought the mix platte, which had 3-4 types of ham, 3-4 types of cheese, a Rilette of pork, olives, pickles and a good basket of baguette. Very tasty and light lunch, prices are very reasonable. Good beer as well.... Only a lady behind the bar, and 2 male guests, so very cosy and gave a very local feel in the middle of Paris More

Thank you ! Even 6-7 types of cheeses ! See you later with pleasure.

What a gem. Atmosphere great, small, historic building, only 4 tables inside, plus bar stools and several outdoors. Very quaint. Ordered the 3 soup sampler (excellent) and cheese fondue (excellent). Well worth it if you are looking for a nice meal or drink right in... the heart of Paris. The adorable owner's dog was an added attraction. More

Thank you very much ! Its true the bar is small, but with customers of quality ! See you with pleasure.

as i said i have been living in Paris for years and this is one of my refuges from the negative stuff in Paris.....Marie is really nice and helpful and yes she has limited space so doesnt have a kitchen but still does her best... to make you feel at home She has a great range of tapas and snacks and never tries to hide from folks that she warms up the hot stuff (at very low prices) in micro wave.....I like her veggie sandwich called l'ecureuil=the squirrel sandwich....hazel nuts, lettuce and tomato........beer great the cote de Rhone red wine is my cup of tea.....lovely place just off the main tourist drag near Chatelet More

Merci beaucoup pour votre commentaire qui nous encourage à continuer sur notre (longue) lancée. Nous faisons en effet de notre... More

It's a great little place to drink something and not spend a lot!! :) don't know about the foods, but looking at the menu that's not expensive ether!

Our first Secret Bar Tour will take you to some of the most authentic and unpretentious bars in Over the Rhine. Immerse yourself in the rich history and vibrant present of the city as you wander through the oldest city park viewing beautiful architecture and story high murals. To wrap up our adventure, we’ll take a vote: old vs new bars. Which are the best?

What our guests are saying

tkilrainrn

We took the Acadia National Park tour on a Cruise stop in Bar Harbor. I am thankful that we had reservations because it was sold out by reservation only! That says a lot for a tour. The bus driver (Santos) was very knowledgeable and we had a wonderful time. The views are spectacular from Cadillac Mountain and Santos gave us a ton of information about the area. I recommend this tour to anyone traveling to Bar Harbor.

Thomas Dye

Stories were wonderful. It was a great way to start our visit to Acadia and Bar Harbor

Rita Wallace

The tour was great!! A lot of history information was giving, we would have known all that if not for the tour. The tour guide was great!! Santo did an excellent job and made it fun!!

Cheryl & Nile Luedtke

Size of tour was perfect. The transportation was very comfortable. Our tour guide was a local, environmentalist, former national park employee who was enthusiastic about the park and extremely knowledgeable. Loved the history she shared with us.

What a wonderful tour this was. We were happy that we booked this tour instead of cruise line tour. Great information about the area, the park, and what a fun ride. Beautiful vista views from the top of the park.

Yvonne Forbes

Ann Leach

Leach From the time we called to make our reservation we were treated as family. Our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and quite funny. The tour was amazing!

Jennifer Stachnik

This was a great tour! We learned a lot and got to see as many park highlights as possible in the short time we had. We went to the top of Cadillac Mountain, the Nature Center and wildflower garden, and Thunder Hole. It's such an amazing place and I can't wait to go back.

Jennifer Stachnik

Morgan Reimers

Morgan Reimers

O9472VRjohns

This was a very comfortable tour with an excellent guide. We got to see the countryside, make some short (but just long enough) stops and even visit with some locals. The bus leaves from the center of town which is very convenient and it was fun to walk around Bar Harbor. And the price was worth every penny.

O9472VRjohns

ransal1

The tour guide was very knowledgeable and the bus stopped enough times to get the great fall leaves shots we were after. If you get back on the bus in good time, you'll have more time to see the sites down the road. If not, some of the spots will be cut short. Our times were adequate. The price for the tour was very reasonable and the driver was great.

Grady M

Since we traveled a long distance to spend a week in the area, we wanted a guided tour to help us get the lay of the land to help us maximize our time. This tour certainly filled the bill. Our guide was knowledgeable and entertaining, mingling local stories with history, interspersed with some terrible jokes that kept us groaning and laughing. I highly recommend it.

My husband and I were delighted to stumble upon this bus tour in Bar Harbor, that took us all the way to the top of Mt. Cadillac. Bus driver/tour guide Heather painted a colorful picture of life in Bar Harbor through her stories, jokes, and in-depth knowledge of the area, its history, and environment. And she gave us a discount coupon to Testa’s, where I had a tasty lobster roll (with garlic butter)!

Wayne H

Amazing tour of Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. The Female tour guide was extremely knowledgeable about the island and the park. She made it a 10 Star tour!

ChuckBrooks

This tour covers the entire National Park Tour Loop including Cadillac Mountain. The tour guide was very good. There was plenty of time at the stops. Be sure to reserve your tour online as it often sells out, especially when there are cruise ships in port. When we got our tickets the ticket agent gave us a coupon for Testa's Restaurant and we had an excellent lunch there. This tour is a very good value.

We enjoyed this tour on our first full day and glad we did. We learned many things about the park we wouldn’t have found out otherwise. Our guide was funny and tailored the trip to our group. You will see the highlights of the park and get some great ideas on where you want to return to explore later. We thought it was worth the money.

Great adventure, saw seals, lighthouses and listened to interesting facts on the area. Bit hard to hear at times, just need to find the right place to sit. Beautiful scenery. Would highly recommend and would love to go back and do the puffin trip in the right season!

I have always had a fear of going on the ocean. Facing my fears to experience everything I have always wanted to do. What an amazing experience! Educational & Fun! We saw whales, seal, bald eagles and amazing scenery.

Such a beautiful and scenic boat ride. Even though it was October in Maine, the sun was shining and it couldn't have been a prettier day. We saw a lighthouse, lots of seals, and even a couple bald eagles. Definitely glad we did the boat tour!

Everything is very organized, they take you out at the bay, you hear very cool stories about each island, about lobster fishing and about the animals that leave in the area. We got to see seals, bald eagle and a lot of others!

Really outstanding tour of Bar Harbor and Frenchman’s Bay! Boat was nice and clean and comfortable and Captain Phil guided it skillfully. The tour narrator, Abbie, was outstanding and pointed out all the landmarks and wildlife. We were able to see seals, dolphins and other wildlife. Highly recommend this boat tour!

OVER 1,000 5-STAR REVIEWS!

The crew was fantastic and went out of their way to find whales. I highly recommend this excursion.

We enjoyed getting to see what came up with the traps and getting to hold a live lobster. It was a good length of a tour and I'd definitely recommend it for the kids or adults like me who are still kids at heart. The ship captain and naturalist were very friendly and great guides.

We booked a whale watching tour through this company. It was a great experience we saw several whales and porpoise and dolphins while on the tour. The crew and staff were great and they really took time to make our tour extra special. We highly recommend this company to all who want to experience an once in a lifetime experience.

During our adventure we saw seals, the infamous puffins, bald eagles along with many other critters as well. The crew were accommodating, professional, a little humorous, and knowledgeable. Highly recommend if you're up for a boat ride in the Bar Harbor area.

So fun! Our guide was extremely knowledgeable, the boat had plenty of room to walk around and the captain did a great job making sure we could all see the landmarks they were pointing out. I’d go again!

Interesting history of Bar Harbor area coupled with eagles, hawks, cormorants, gannets and other sea birds. Good narration by our naturalist, Ruth, who was informative and interesting. Enjoyed the lighthouses and seeing the diverse harbors and island shores.

We loved both Captain Edwin and narrator Andy. Both were so gracious, clearly caring about everyone's comfort and involvement. The knowledge that both shared regarding the local seas, lobsters, crabs, seals, and landmarks was very interesting and informative. We caught a variety of sea life in the traps - lobster, crabs, and a sea cucumber. We spotted dozens of seals. The boat itself was stable, clean, and well maintained. It had flaps to protect from high winds and sea spray, but you are allowed to open the flaps as you want. I am someone who can get seasick easily, but I did not feel even the bit queasy. They do post a sign at the dock on the day of your tour that states the sea sickness level, so if it indicates a high level of sea sickness, you can take Dramamine or other in advance. Kids and adults alike enjoyed this tour and it was very interactive.

The boat is roomy, both inside ans out on the decks; staff friendly and knowledgeable. The sound system is nice and clear so all guests can hear what the naturalist is saying about the wildlife. And...oh...the whales!!! It was amazing, and I hope to do it again. Well worth the price.

On this once in a lifetime experience, we chose to go with this whale 🐋 watching 👀 tour There are many companies that offer varying tours, and this is the only one I've ever experienced, so can only speak about this one; nor do I have anything to compare it to. This experience was 100% as expected (and advertised) with zero surprises. The Captain, crew, ancillary staff,safety/security personnel and tour guide were all highly trained, knowledgeable, courteous, professional, & welcoming. It was just a fantastic overall 'refreshing' vibe. The scenery was nothing short of amazing, awe-inspiring, and magical. We saw EIGHT humpback whales!!! I am a seasoned world traveler, have visited numerous bucket list places, and have done literally hundreds of excursions through Trip Advisor and similar platforms. I 100%, would do this again if the opportunity presented itself. For others? I highly, highly recommend this experience. 👌

We went on the lighthouse tour and it was wonderful! The guide did a fabulous job informing us about lighthouses, history of the area and alerting us to wildlife. Highly recommend this tour!

The captain and crew went off their route to find interesting sights and sea life for our cruise. The Naturalist on board was knowledgeable and interesting. Highly recommend it!

We had a great experience with the Nature Cruise, we learned a lot about the area and saw some great scenic views! I highly recommend binoculars, you can rent some on the boat, but they’re limited. We got to see seals, porpoises, and a few bald eagles, which was really cool because I had never seen one before and they were what I wanted to see most! I definitely plan on going back again for more cruises!

Want to see a whale? These are the top 5 recommended whale watch tours in New England

bar a tour

Whale watching season in New England lasts from April to October as the giants of see come to the Gulf of Maine to feed in the nutrient rich water.

The trick is seeing them. While you might get lucky and spot some whales from the coastline on Cape Cod , typically it requires some extra planning for the best experience.

With the North Atlantic Right Whales being seen in higher numbers this year off Cape Cod , and other whale species such as humpback, fin and minke whales making their way north, booking a whale watch is looking like an ideal day trip for the family.

Here are the top five whale watching tours in New England based on Trip Advisor's reviews .

1. Seven Seas Whale Watch

Cost: $45 per adult

Duration: Four hours

What to know: Based in Gloucester, Massachusetts, a former whaling port now launches whale watch tours from Cape Ann to the Stellwagen Bank Marine Sanctuary.

2. Cape Ann Whale Watch

Cost: $48 per adult

What to know: Also leaving from Gloucester to take patrons to Stellwagen Bank, Cape Ann Whale Watch states that it distinguishes itself from the competition through its faster vessel, The Hurricane II. It makes the most of the four hours on the water by reaching the whales' feeding grounds sooner for more time watching and less time traveling.

3. Bar Harbor Whale Watch Co.

Cost: $75 per adult

Duration: Three to five and a half hours

What to know: As the name suggests, based in Bar Harbor, Maine and goes out into the Gulf of Maine. Despite the name, the tour explores a habitat with porpoise, dolphins, seals, sharks and various sea birds. Bar Harbor Whale Watch Co. is also a Whale SENSE, a voluntary program that helps to promote responsible whale watching practices, education, and ocean stewardship in collaboration with NOAA Fisheries. They also offer puffin tours.

4. Cap'n Fish's Cruises

Cost: $79 per adult

Duration: Three and a half hours

What to know: Also based in Maine, this tour, guided by marine biologists, leaves from Boothbay Harbor. Having operated for over 80 years, touts itself as the oldest whale watching tour in Maine's Mid Coast region. They also offer puffin tours.

5. Dolphin Fleet Whale Watch

Duration: Three to four hours

What to know: Leaves from Provincetown, Massachusetts. Dolphin Fleet facilitates scientific research and each tour has members of their on staff naturalists on board. Also a member of Whale SENSE.

These RI chefs have tasted the world. How you can join them on a culinary tour.

bar a tour

Food and travel are an intoxicating combination. Imagine how tempting trips planned with local food stars could be on destinations ranging from South Korea to Portugal.

Club Adventures, AAA’s small-group adventure tour operator, has teamed up with Providence and Rhode Island chefs, restaurateurs, and beverage experts to offer curated food tours starting in August and running into next year. The concept is to see the world through a local lens with a guide who knows all the best places to eat and drink.

Of the 13 food and drink trips, some are close to home including New York City and Austin, Texas. Others are to islands including the Azores and Sicily. Mexico, Spain and Germany during Oktoberfest are other destinations. One trip offers a gluten-free and vegan adventure in Italy.

The trips will have an average size of 14 travelers. They range in time from 4 days to 10 days with prices from $1,999 to $7,979.

Bethany Hodge's 15 years in the travel industry have included designing and operating culturally immersive small group trips. Now, as head of product for Club Adventures, she is launching the new tours.

But it was a conversation with Bethany Caliaro, owner/manager of both Oberlin and Gift Horse in Providence , that planted the seed for the program. Hodge was headed to Mexico with her husband Brian and Caliaro had just returned from a trip there. She shared her list of restaurants, bars and specific dishes for the couple to try.

"I’ve been watching the food and hospitality industry in Rhode Island become a national leader in innovation, community, diversity and sustainability – all values that I use when designing Club Adventures tours," she said.

"Every one of her suggestions elevated our travel experience, and I realized that the insight and guidance of a food professional could really turn a fun trip into a memorable adventure," said Hodge.

With consumer interest in culinary travel on the rise, Hodge knew tours that showcased these mutual values could be a hit. She first pitched the idea to Caliaro and Jen Davis, who manages the beverage program at The Eddy and Durk's  Bar-B-Q , both in Providence. They connected Hodge to more of the local culinary community.

"Every single establishment that I spoke with was in," said Hodge.

Each chef/bartender/business owner has been involved in curating the itinerary, leading to an exclusive experience that can’t be found anywhere else in the market.

"While chef-led tours are certainly being done in the travel space, I believe this is a first to ever showcase a city’s leaders in the culinary space all at once as a unified portfolio," Hodge said.

"It really speaks to the community and creativity of Providence," she said.

She hopes to create even more trips for 2025 with more leaders in the Rhode Island hospitality scene, she said.

The trips and guides

The cultural exploration and food adventures will be led by an impressive group including James Beard nominated chef Ben Sukle of Oberlin and Gift Horse. He will lead a September tour to Northern Italy, Slovenia, and Croatia.

“I am incredibly excited to join everyone and experience Trieste and its surrounding cities and environs," said Sukle. "All of the nuances of the lifestyles and culture there are behind how I cook and why I love to cook."

Caliaro will lead a fish-to-fork dining adventure in Sicily. Led by Oberlin chef Chris Pfail, the art of making kimchi is on the menu for a South Korea adventure.

Jen Davis leads two trips, one to Austin, Texas, to explore the barbecue and distillery scene and one to New York City to enjoy the city's cocktail scene.

Spain will be part of a Basque Adventure led by The Eddy's Luke Mersfelder and Britt Simons.

Mexico City and Oaxaca will be explored in a trip led by Joaquin Meza of Dolores . Germany’s Oktoberfest will be celebrated with Brendan Kennedy of Proclamation Ale in Warwick.

Robin Dionne & BJ Mansuetti who operate the RI VegFest and GFree Fests will lead the Gluten-Free and Vegan tour of Italy.

Pizza Marvin's Robert Andreozzi is another James Beard nominated chef and he will be on the Portugal & Galicia Food Adventure.

Only one guide is from outside the Rhode Island culinary restaurant world but she is no stranger to locals. Maria Lawton is the host and guide of "Maria's Portuguese Table" which is presented by WSBE Rhode Island PBS. She will lead an Azores Food Adventure and Portugal Wine & Food Adventure.

A first-timer's guide to Saskatoon, Canada

James March

From timing your visit right to planning your activities, here's our first-timer's guide to Saskatoon © K. D. Kirchmeier / Getty Images

Surrounded by gentle wheat fields beneath a dome of great prairie skies, Saskatoon is the largest city in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan .

Straddling the South Saskatchewan River, it has been the province’s cultural and economic hub since its settlement in the late 19th century (but not its capital – that falls to Regina).

The Northern Plains Indigenous Peoples had been guardians of this land for over 6000 years when, in 1883, white Methodists founded the town as a temperance colony, naming it after the purple berry growing in the region. While the railroad eventually reached the fledgling town in 1890, Saskatoon still only had 113 inhabitants at the turn of the century. A boom period of new settlers and entrepreneurs soon followed, and Saskatoon grew into a thriving city, albeit isolated from big cities like Vancouver , Toronto and Montréal .

Today, the sometimes stark prairie landscapes around the city look like nowhere else in the country. Downtown, you’ll find street art tours, compelling museums, craft beer breweries, a variety of architecture and some fine riverside trails. And Saskatoon now proudly explains and celebrates the Indigenous Peoples who have been here for thousands of years, with the Wanuskewen complex a majestic and poignant monument to that past and present.

These top tips can help you plan a trip to Saskatoon.

The night sky glows behind some riverside buildings following sunset

When should I go to Saskatoon?

Though Saskatoon – one of the sunniest cities in Canada  – receives plenty of sunlight (2350.4 hours annually), winters are long and cold so plan to visit during the glorious summer months between June and August. This is the busiest time of year, but since Saskatoon is a little more under-the-radar than other Canadian cities, it’s not overwhelmed by tourists and offers much better value for money regarding accommodation and eating out.

The city comes alive with music on those effulgent summer days with magnificent festivals across multiple genres including the Saskatchewan Jazz Festival , Rock the River and the Ness Creek Music Festival . And for those who do want to embrace Saskatchewan winter scenes, the Nutrien Wintershines Festival hosts ice sculptures, cook-offs, stargazing and more.

How long should I spend in Saskatoon?

Allow two to three days to explore Saskatoon, but also leave time for attractions on the city’s outskirts that make use of the abundant prairie space. You’ll spend the majority of your time in downtown Saskatoon, on the river trails and the Broadway neighborhood, which is ideal for a weekend. More planning is needed for the excursions out of the city, so map out an extra day or two for those depending on time and budget.

Is it easy to get in and around Saskatoon?

Saskatoon John G. Diefenbaker International Airport is 7km (4 miles) northwest of downtown Saskatoon, which is about 18 minutes by taxi, the most convenient form of travel to any downtown hotel. The number 11 bus also runs from the airport, and takes around 30 minutes to make the same journey (without factoring in walking to the hotel).

Though its streets are wide, Saskatoon’s downtown core is highly walkable and there are several bridges spanning the South Saskatchewan River that link to Broadway Ave’s bars, cafes and stores. Consider hiring a bike too, as the relatively flat landscape and serpentine river trails are ideal for cycling. Visitors to Wanuskewen will need to hire a car or take a taxi.

Traveling elsewhere in Canada? Here are our top tips on transportation

A flat path alongside a river

6 of the best things to do in Saskatoon

1. explore the meewasin valley trail.

Saskatoon’s huge prairie skies are evocative and entice you outside, so the best way to experience the great outdoors here is by following some of the Meewasin Valley Trail . Flanking the serpentine river, the 25km (15 mile) trails are a fine introduction to Saskatoon’s cityscape, and are best experienced on two wheels (look out for the motivational chalk murals and messages along the way).

2. See artworks in the Remai Modern

The river winds south to River Landing in downtown’s southern tip, and it’s here that the Tetris-like Remai Modern  museum rises up on a small bluff. Alongside a permanent collection featuring over 8000 works from Canadian and international artists, there’s also a quirky permanent exhibition of ceramics and linocuts by Pablo Picasso in this spacious museum bursting with natural light.

3. Enjoy the buss of Broadway Avenue

A short walk across the Broadway Bridge brings cinematic city views followed by a stroll into arguably the most vibrant corner of Saskatoon. Airy breweries , buzzing bistros, kitsch vinyl stores and the iconic Broadway Theatre fringe Broadway Ave, which is a fine spot to spend a morning, afternoon or evening (perhaps even all three?).

4. Take yourself on a tour of downtown's murals and architecture

Back in downtown, discover an art-splashed city on a self-guided street art tour passing by huge murals and multicolored installations spanning 20th and 23rd Street East. Even if you’re not staying there, the Delta Bessborough Hotel is something of a work of art itself. Completed in 1935, the Bessborough is a soaring Châteauesque turreted and gabled affair reminiscent of Bavarian castles that looks startlingly out of place.

5. See how Saskatoon was

Towards the edge of the city, the Western Development Museum’s compelling Boomtown exhibit is an indoor reconstruction of a typical Saskatchewan small-town main street from 1910, complete with a blacksmith, church and train station.

6. Taste local produce at the farmers market

And for a true experience of this land, it’s worth a visit to the Saskatoon Farmers Market  – an institution running since 1975 and stuffed with vendors selling everything from wild berries to handmade moccasins.

My favorite thing to do in Saskatoon

There’s a magical quality to watching the sun sink behind the widescreen horizon at Wanuskewin Heritage Park . Not like the picture-postcard sunsets you see on Caribbean beaches, it’s more of a calming, spiritual feeling as the sun’s soft glow fades across the marshy creeks and wooded ridges of the Opamihaw Valley. Shortly after, I watched the moon rise against a blue evening canvas. Known as nēhiyawēwin in Plains Cree, Wanuskewin roughly translates to "seeking peace of mind" and that name couldn’t be more apt.

Around 20 minutes north of downtown Saskatoon, Wanuskewin tells the story of the Northern Plains Indigenous People’s spiritual relationship to this land and the living creatures they share it with, most notably the repopulated bison. You can explore panels, artwork, interactive classes, traditional food and much more, but most importantly that story – which is never sugarcoated – is told by Indigenous People themselves. Few experiences I’ve had in North America have felt deeper and more enlightening than this one.

How much money do I need for Saskatoon?

  • Hostel room: $79
  • Hotel room for two: $94
  • Public transport ticket: $3
  • Coffee: $3.60
  • Sandwich: $3
  • Dinner for two: $73
  • Beer/pint at a bar: $5.80

Budget for your time in Canada with out money-saving tips

A riverside city in winter with snow covering the roads and bridges

Should I visit in winter?

With an average temperature of -13°C (8°F) in January, winter in Saskatoon is only for the hardiest of souls. However, one bonus of a visit in this season – along with budget-friendly prices – is the chance of seeing the northern lights, with the aurora's stunning swirls sometimes visible if the stars align (no pun intended). Just remember to pack plenty of layers.

What language is spoken in Saskatoon?

Though English and French are official languages in Saskatchewan, English is by far the most spoken language in Saskatoon and you’ll need it for all of your interactions.

1920s Chicago Penthouse Has a Glamorous Past and a Hidden Speakeasy for $4.3M

( Realtor.com )

1920s Chicago Penthouse Has a Glamorous Past and a Hidden Speakeasy for $4.3M

A luxurious Chicago penthouse once owned by silent-film actress Colleen Moore, a Hollywood star in her day, was just listed for $4,350,000.

Built in 1927, the five-bedroom townhouse features an original speakeasy-style bar hidden away in the library. The place has had just three owners.

“Each owner has also been a custodian for a long time,” says listing agent Jennifer Ames , of Engel & Völkers Chicago. “Colleen Moore was the first owner, followed by two other unrelated owners.”

Many original elements

The two-story, Gold Coast unit has been thoughtfully modernized over the years but still features many period details, including custom millwork, exposed wood beams, coffered ceilings, and four fireplaces. It comprises roughly 7,650 square feet.

“There are only a handful of these trophy penthouses available,” Ames notes, adding that this building has only two penthouses.

But the coolest detail might be the home’s artfully hidden bar.

“The library has a bookcase with fake books,” Ames explains. “Behind it is a speakeasy that was probably built during the Prohibition era and is now a bar area.”

Another modern-style bar was added more recently, according to the listing.

A grand living room boasts an ornamental, barrel-vault, plaster ceiling and oversized windows that overlook the private terrace. The former grandeur of the 1920s property is also evident in the original wood paneling along with a dining room that can accommodate up to 22 guests. But a few steps away, a charming sunroom awaits for cozier parties, Ames says.

“The prior owner is said to have hosted President John F. Kennedy there,” she notes. “There are incredible formal rooms but also many other casual rooms that lay out well for families.”

Luxurious updates include dual laundry centers, an upstairs playroom, and a temperature-controlled wine closet.

“When it was renovated, they enlarged the apartment using the outdoor space,” Ames says. “A major construction project took place in 1998-99, and more was done in 2010.”

The gourmet chef’s kitchen now offers high-end appliances, a butler’s pantry, and separate breakfast area. Elsewhere, a large family room and cozy office have custom built-ins and a gas fireplace.

“The kitchen, family room, and office are all open but connected,” Ames notes. “It has a neat family setup.”

A lavish primary suite includes dual dressing rooms, a gas fireplace, and spacious bathroom with book-matched, marble slabs. Oversized windows provide sweeping city views.

The $9,027 monthly association fee includes full-time door staff, an on-site manager, access to a new exercise room, and a landscaped garden terrace. Valet parking is also available across the street.

Ames says the home has already attracted a broad range of interest.

“I have shown the home to a couple with no kids who loves to entertain,” she says. “The next buyer might be someone who wants the security of a doorman and wants to raise their kids in the city. It would also be a no-brainer for a high-level person like an ambassador.”
