Beach Fossils was originally the name of Dustin Payseur’s indie/surf rock solo project when he began recording in his bedroom in Brooklyn, NYC, USA. The current, expanded line-up was finally cemented after numerous personnel changes.

Although frontman Payseur and drummer Tommy Gardner were the only full-time members of the band with song writing credits on 2013’s ‘Clash the Truth’, the two are now joined by Jack Doyle Smith and Tommy Davidson, and are signed to Brooklyn indie label Captured Tracks. Past members have included DIIV’s Zachary Cole Smith and John Peña, who left to form Heavenly Beat.

Their 2010 self-titled debut album on Captured Tracks featured a somewhat modest attitude towards song writing – simple yet catchy lead guitars chime out over rhythmic bass lines, whilst Payseur’s echoing vocals float on alongside on gentle waves of reverb. This first full-length was followed by the release of the 2011 EP ‘What a Pleasure’, which saw the band draw comparisons to fellow lo-fi/indie purveyors Wild Nothing, whose frontman Jack Tatum appeared as a vocalist on the track ‘Out in the Way’.

By contrast, 2013’s ‘Clash the Truth’ was both more complex and more ambitious; the lo-fi approach they had previously favored was refined rather than replaced, but the addition of new elements to their sound such as the dream pop instrumental sections of single ‘Careless’ and the droning, atmospheric interlude ‘Modern Holiday’ led to an altogether more in-depth, unpredictable album. The circumstances surrounding its recording could have easily been disastrous for the band – ‘Clash the Truth’ was put together after the line-up that toured for the album ‘Beach Fossils’ had all but dissolved, and then Hurricane Sandy destroyed Civil Defense, the studio they had been working in. In spite of these setbacks, ‘Clash the Truth’ received positive reviews and reached number 40 on the Independent Record Chart.

Beach Fossils are known for their animated, passionate performances and have toured with their friends and label-mates DIIV and Heavenly Beat, as well having played with indie favorites Real Estate and Mac Demarco, among others.

Live reviews

Opening for Kurt Vile and the Violators, Beach Fossils were the main attraction for me rather than the headlining act. Their surf revival jams constantly act as the soundtrack to my day, and seeing them live only intensified my infatuation with them. Since the 'Daydream' EP came out, Beach Fossils have perfectly captured the soft parts of life, as if each song was crafted for spending the evening on the shore with your high school sweetheart. The way the reverberating vocals sync up with the dancing guitar riff on "Sometimes" in a laid back and careless yet insistent and confident flow makes it feel like you're personally being sung to in an echoed out room. "Sleep Apnea" is a track for late night pondering, when you're all alone with nothing but your thoughts as the faint glow of the moonlight illuminates your bedroom. Whether the bassist is tossing his instrument into the East River mid-performance because "It was on its way out... literally," or the drummer appears to be having more fun than any human being has ever dared to have on his two tom and tambourine setup, Beach Fossils live presence is unbeatable. Dustin Payseur is everything one could want in a lead singer; he's friendly, energetic and will never turn down interaction with his fans. The triumphant chant at the end of "Clash the Truth" brought him down into the audience at the small Orlando venue. The set was brought to an end as Dustin directly addressed the his fans, bellowing out that he wished he could sit down and have a conversation with each one of us, all while the band wailed on their instruments until it all came to a powerful stop. All in all, seeing Beach Fossils will bring out an appreciation for your youth and all the emotions that accompany it. To use Dustin's words, "You get so excited that you can't feel any of your insecurities."

If you’re not familiar with Brooklyn record label Captured Tracks, here’s a couple of quick facts about them; first of all, there’s a certain inventiveness with guitar tones that has effectively become their calling card these past few years - there’s some hugely diverse bands forming their roster, but that imaginative approach to guitar playing is the one thing that seems to unite them. The second thing I’d say about them is that, if you look at their release history, they clearly have a very sensible policy in place; they don’t sign bands that are anything less than excellent. That’d explain, then, why they’ve been home to Brooklyn four-piece Beach Fossils for quite some time now; the band made a lo-fi indie pop sound their trademark on early releases, and perfected it on their excellent 2011 EP What a Pleasure, which also introduced surf pop influences. On their second full-length, though - last year’s Clash the Truth - they aimed for a grittier, noisier sound, one that was a little darker than their previously sunny outlook, and their fast and furious live shows began to reflect that; they played a number of incendiary dates across the UK in May of 2013, and aren’t to be missed when they return with new material.

Beach Fossils of course were beyond amazing and everyone should check them out next they play in la. The crowd was high energy and everyone was into it so it gave Dustin and them a reason to feed off the crowds energy and was overall a magical experience. No complaints. Heavenly beat was also very good and deserved more people to get hyped up, but the crowd was dumb. They deserved more energy in the crowd. They are great artists. They gave it their all and only one group of people were dancing.

It was a sick show! The opening act was great and beach fossils was amazing, it felt like everyone in the crowd was having such a good time, I got punched in the face by that one dude who got on stage and ended up getting kicked out but I still think this was one of the best shows I've been too!! Anytime beach fossils comes back around I'm there man.

I saw these guys live at the Silver Dollar in Toronto back in 2016 and it was the most thrilling concert I've been to! Such good vibes and energy, and the crowd was amazing. Definitely can't wait for these guys to play in Europe! Played a lot of songs from their S/T and Clash The Truth.

This show was amazing!! I had an great time with friends and we jammed out like crazy. The venue was really cool and nice plus the weather was great so no one was sweating too much. Best first concert experience and I Hope Beach Fossils comes back soon!

Surprisingly energetic! I thought the show would be rather mellow, but it was quite high energy. There was a "pit", which I'm not totally into, but it gives you an idea of the energy of the crowd. The sound was good and it's a show I'd recommend.

SUPER AWESOME!!!! Super down to earth dudes, they are absolutely the sweetest with their fans! Of course, their music is amazing and hearing it live is always so wonderful to experience, definitely will never ever forget their concerts!!!!

Holy.... Probably the best show I've been to. The atmosphere and vibe was absolutely incredible, the performance was surreal. They're really funny and nice guys, and just killed it on stage. Had an amazing time.

Beach Fossils Outline Fall 2023 North American Tour

Beach Fossils Outline Fall 2023 North American Tour

Acclaimed New York-based indie rock band Beach Fossils have announced they’ll embark on a headlining North American tour in celebration of their latest musical creation, Bunny, this October. The run, in support of their fourth studio album, will continue through the fall into November.

The indie darlings have been making waves recently, not only for their recent release but also for their notable opening slot for chart-topping rap sensation Post Malone this month. Riding on the heels of the exhilarating venture, Beach Fossils are primed to take center stage and share the momentum with Turnover, unleashing their melodic magic throughout an extensive tour spanning various cities across North America.

Bunny , a significant addition to the band’s discography, arrived six years after their 2017 album Somersault. This sonic journey showcases Beach Fossils’ growth and evolution, blending their signature dreamy soundscapes with fresh musical elements that captivate the imagination.

Notably, this isn’t the only milestone Beach Fossils have celebrated in recent years. The band also marked the tenth anniversary of their self-titled debut album, treating fans to a reissued version that paid homage to their humble beginnings and celebrated their remarkable journey in the industry.

Beach Fossils have announced a Fall 2023 North American headlining tour in support of their fourth full-length studio album, Bunny .

After kicking things off by finishing up a string of dates opening for their friend Post Malone — who just released an album of his own — the band will head out on their headlining run beginning in late October. Joined by opening act Turnover , they’ll make stops in Atlanta, Austin, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, and many more cities. Early next year, they’ll even hop across the pond for a number of European shows that were previously announced in July. Check out the full list of dates below.

A Live Nation pre-sale for the new dates will begin on Wednesday, August 9th (use access code TRACK ) ahead of the general on-sale slated for Friday, August 11th via Ticketmaster . Find tickets for all of Beach Fossils’ upcoming shows at StubHub . For their European dates, tickets are available through Viagogo .

Read more about the VIP package on the band’s website .

Bunny was the first proper full-length release from the band since 2017’s Somersault . In 2021, they dropped The Other Side of Life: Piano Ballads , a record made up of jazz rearrangements of their songs.

“Keep your hands to yourself!” cries Oscar, as we descend deep inside Horne Lake Caves, a 30-minute drive from Parksville on Vancouver Island. “One pinkie can destroy hundreds of years of growth.”

High above hang giant icicle-shaped stalactites in Riverbend Cave, and to the right there are waterfalls of calcite (we even climb up to see a marshmallow-like chunk that strikingly resembles a Buddha shape). It’s all part of a mesmerizing underground cathedral with minerals glittering under the lights on our helmets.

We’re teetering on the uneven, occasionally slippery rocks, thanks to the “three-points-of-contact-at-all-time” and “be-slow-to-be- smooth, go-slow-to-go-fast” mantras from our instructor. Our group — a couple from Toronto and a family up for the day from Victoria— navigates the narrow damp passages and giant boulders cantilevering into the 554-metre-long cave.

We wind our way further down past more fossils and other crystalline formations encountering the three stages of caving. Beyond the “entrance” and “twilight” parts of a cave—where the sunlight can still seep in—we emerge into the final one. Finding rocks to sit on and switching off our lights, we are now in the dark zone, utter darkness.

After decades exploring above ground on the island, it’s thrilling to be subterranean. It opens up a whole new playground. After all, as home to some 1,500 surveyed caves, it’s little wonder Vancouver Island is touted as the “caving capital of Canada.”

Blinking as we emerge into the full May sunshine, I warm up quickly by peeling off the layers needed for the eight degrees or so inside the caves. However, the rock theme continues to thread through my three-day trip.

Pamper yourself

Back in Parksville, I lap up my first soothing mineral pool at The Grotto Spa at the newly renovated Tigh-Na-Mara Seaside Spa Resort , a long-standing family favourite that’s built into a bluff above the Salish Sea with horizons to chase over nearly two kilometres of tidal flats. With its sculpted rock interiors, the attractive Grotto also features an invigorating cool waterfall and it now boasts chic cedar-barrel saunas with windows looking out on the surrounding 22 acres of forest.

The following day, it’s time for my a relaxing float in potassium, magnesium and sodium. An hour up the Island Highway, Campbell River’s newly-launched Naturally Pacific Resort and its Immersion Spa & Wellness—and experiential showers—are equally exceptional. All with its vantage point overlooking not only its own verdant golf course, but across the Salish Sea and the boats of the fishing town.

Homalco Wildlife & Cultural Tours

Early the next morning I climb aboard a boat with Homalco Wildlife & Cultural Tours as we venture out to Cortes and Quadra islands in hopes of seeing migrating humpbacks. On the ecological island of Mitlenatch we see—and smell—stellar sea lions hanging out and Pacific white-sided dolphins dart alongside our boat. Sadly no whales this time.

Our skipper Al tells us about “the people of the fast-running waters”’ in his generous conversation about his Homalco (or Xwémalhkwu) background. We head across calm channels to their former home at Aupe or New Church House, now an abandoned village.

This sheltered seaboard in general may not enjoy the surfing elan of its west coast cousin, Tofino, but it certainly feels like it’s riding its own wave of these types of First Nations discovery and wellbeing journeys, as well as a trail of culinary stops.

Culinary stops along the way

At Naturally Pacific, it’s Carve Kitchen & Meatery wowing the taste buds, with a lick-the-bowl asparagus (freshly picked from its garden) soup. And down in the ocean-side town with the wondrous Elk Falls Provincial Park as its neighbour, Freyja Croissant delivers delicious croissants based on a Scandinavian recipe (the store is named for a renowned Norse goddess). The owners–originally from Hungary—have also just opened Meraki, a new cafe a few yards away, complete with a floral bar to order a bouquet alongside your pastries. (Thankfully, it’s all near the saltwater-fishing epicentre of Discovery Pier, which is a good place to walk off the calories.)

Back in Parksville and Qualicum Beach, much is adding to the ongoing charm and reinvention of this coast. British expat Jeremy Perkins— leaving behind a previous career as a professional viola player (he performed in The Phantom of the Opera)—has turned a humble cup of joe into an art form at French Press Coffee Roasters .

Gastown’s Water Street Cafe owners have also expanded into Qualicum and Nanoose Bay. (You’d be hard pressed to find a better view than over the Fairwinds Marina in Schooner Cove from Nanoose Bay Cafe—or a better manila clam spaghetti vongole or chocolate mousse torte.)

Whether it’s a cave’s absolute darkness or the bright shimmer of these new foodie havens, the Salish Sea and coastal towns, the east always shows Vancouver Island in a good light.

Horne Lake Caves Going underground: Just under two hours long, the Riverbend Cave is the easiest of many guided routes at Horne Lake Caves . A comfortable, intriguing introduction (even for those of us who prefer life above ground…)

Qualicum Beach Farmers’ Market Come hungry, leave sated. This year-round Saturday morning market is a feast for the eyes and tummy. Heaps of fresh local produce, flowers, baked goods, wine, craft distilleries, artisanal goods—pottery, textiles, beauty products, and candles—and food and coffee trucks. qbfarmersmarket.com

The Grotto Spa at Tigh-Na-Mara

Hit pause with the two-hour wellness experience at The Grotto Spa at Tigh-Na-Mara. If you have time, book the tapas tasting menu as well—and eat, as the Treetops restaurant name suggests—closer to the canopy. The imaginative nine courses take diners from “the ocean” to the “forest floor.” Enjoy Quadra island scallops, leek ash tuile and yuzu caviar followed by wild mushrooms with black garlic.

North Island Wildlife Recovery With “no education but plenty of work ethic,” Sylvia Campbell and her husband Robin started the North Island Wildlife Recovery nearly 40 years ago. Meander through a beautiful garden, near Parksville, and see great horned owl to black bears, eagles and ravens.

Where to eat on the East coast of Vancouver Island

Nanoose Bay Cafe

Those clever folk at Gastown’s Water Street Cafe have sprinkled their culinary chops over the east coast of the island, too. At its Nanoose Bay Cafe, leave extra time to wander around its artisan marketplace.

French Press Coffee Roasters

For next-level coffee, fuel up with French Press Coffee Roasters in Parksville or Qualicum Beach (although brace yourself for a possible line-up at the latter; it’s that popular). Try the Camilo Merizalde (for the aficionados, it’s Double Anaerobic) blend from Colombia—as owner Jeremy Perkins says of the extraordinary flavour, “It’s bonkers!”

Freyja Croissant Expect exceptional croissants (the pistachio one floats my boat). freyjacroissant.ca (and its swish new venue: meraki.com)

Where to stay on the East coast of Vancouver Island

Naturally Pacific Resort

Overnight sensation: A thoughtfully curated hotel which elevates the standard of accommodation—and food—in the area. If you manage to actually prize yourself away from the Immersion Spa & Wellness sanctum or the Crave Kitchen & Meatery, there’s also a state-of-the-art driving range at Velocity next door.

Tigh-Na-Mara Seaside Spa Resort

From the first whiff of acres of cedars and the expansive ocean vistas, you quickly feel a great sense of place. After all, Tigh-Na-Mara means ‘House by the Sea’ in Gaelic.

Fairwinds Residences Next door to Nanoose Bay Cafe, these are smart ceiling-to-floor windowed suites with enviable oceanfront views across the marina. book.
