Whether I’m flying home for the weekend or visiting a friend, I’ve learned the hard way that regular bags just don’t cut it. I’m often left unpacking an entire suitcase to track down one item or juggling a coffee, purse, tickets, and my sanity while I beeline for the gate.

I had a bag like this one, except it was all looks and no brains. The Work Tote has a straightforward, no-nonsense design while keeping things chic and professional in and out of the workplace. Designed for the road, it features an RFID-lined front exterior , external pockets, and a key fob for easy building access. I quite like its casual look, which is in thanks to the cotton and polyester fabric it’s made from.

Weighing 1.9lbs , it’s uniquely convertible to a backpack, tote, or shoulder bag in a switch of a strap. So cool. Coming in black croc and black, keep The Convertible Backpack with you on your travels for $68 – $78 .

Girl, you’re going places, so naturally, you have a lot to pack. The 29″ Large Check-In Roller has all of the same features as the 26″ Check-In Roller , but with a few key differences. Weighing a little heavier at 11.84lbs , this bag is meant for longer travels and bigger adventures. I’d pack this one for extended vacations.

Costing a little more than the smaller 26″ option, the 29″ Large Check-In Roller comes at a cost of $298 . Get it in grey, navy, beige, or black.

Beis Travel Bags Reviews: What Do Customers Think?

Beis Travel Bags Review

Now is the part of this Beis travel bags review where I take a look at what customers have to say about the brand. Checking out the brand’s website, Lakeshore Ladies , Life in Wanderlust , and Reddit, I’ll tell you all about what I found, here. Let’s start with some ratings from beistravel.com:

  • The Luggage Tag : 4.9/5 stars, 122 reviews
  • The 26” Luggage Cover : 4.5/5 stars, 152 reviews
  • 26” Check-In Roller : 4.8/5 stars, 471 reviews
  • The Backpack : 4.8/5 stars, 1,971 reviews
  • The Work Tote : 4.7/5 stars, 2,229 reviews

Customers on the Beis Travel website rate the Beis Weekender Bag with 5 stars among 6,727 reviews . One review read, “The internal compartments are great and the laptop sleeve is really helpful. Also very happy with the quality of the canvas on the bag as well as the zippers.”

Next, I nipped over to a Beis Travel Bags review on a blog called Lakeshore Ladies . The author included the Weekender Bag and Beis Backpack in their 2020 review, The Best Weekender Bags with the Weekender placing #1 and the Backpack taking #4 .

The reviewer has already “used it on 3 trips” and loved the “bottom compartment” and “laptop sleeve.” And while she thinks it’s a great bag (clearly), she thought its only fault was it’s size. I’ll admit, it’s a pretty large bag, but I love how versatile it is and how much you can pack.

The blog Life In Wanderlust reviewed The Weekender, Work Totes, and Cosmetics Case . After trying the tote, the reviewer claimed:

“I was immediately impressed with the quality and the functionality, and suddenly I couldn’t wait to get my hands on other Beis products.” She went on to list that all the Beis products she tried had great features, thoughtful designs, and lived up to the hype .

While searching around for this Beis travel bags review, I found it difficult to source negative reviews about the brand. But, a 1-star review on Reddit did speak of a lengthy return process .

It definitely seems to me that people love this company. Though it could easily be hyped up because of Shay Mitchell’s fame, it actually has a pretty solid reputation among shoppers.

Are Beis Travel Bags Worth It?

Beis Travel Bags Review

I’ll sum things up simply here in this Beis travel bags review: I believe this brand is worth the buy . Why? Because customers and reviewers alike love the bags’ functionality and designs as well as their affordable prices (compared to other luxury brands).

Beis has allowed travelers, moms, and those of us with busy schedules a way to fuse function and fashion. The stylish storage solutions are lightweight , vegan , and portable without being too bulky. Along with flexible payment options, these are things that have customers singing the brand’s praises, and in some cases, making them repeat buyers.

Beis passes with flying colors for me, and I’m pretty stoked on just how smart its bags really are.

The Béis Bags You Need In Your Collection

By Paris Wilson

What started as a desire to create functional bags for parents on the go has turned into multiple best-selling luggage collections and a Barbie collaboration that sold out within minutes. You can't walk through the airport without seeing the eye-catching, signature beige luggage. Actor and entrepreneur Shay Mitchell founded Bèis in 2018 and has been seeing viral success since its first drop.

My introduction to the Béis universe was similar to the rest of the world—through the popular Weekender Bag . I immediately thought it was chic with its neutral hues and could just imagine how sturdy the canvas material must be, but I wasn’t sold on it yet. I was in the market for a full luggage set and wanted an upgrade from stand-alone pieces. At the time, she had only released the duffel , weekender , dopp kit , cosmetic case , luggage tag, and passport holder .

When you buy one travel essential from Béis, you'll quickly feel the urge to buy more. The suitcases and bags work well together and look so polished. The laptop sleeves have a special buckle that can be attached to your carry-on and the backpacks and duffels have convenient trolley sleeves that make dashing through the airport easy. These smart features help ease some of the stress of traveling and limit the amount of items you’re carrying so you're not weighed down. Speaking of being weighed down, Béis suitcases feature a weight indicator that let you know whether or not your bag is overweight before you get to the airport (and before you face any extra fees). Our editors took some of the brand's most talked-about luggage on the road to determine the best of Béis. We considered each bag's weight, capacity, functionality, and overall design. From hard shell checked suitcases to soft-sided carry-ons , here are our top luggage picks from Béis.

This article is part of Condé Nast Traveler’s first-ever Luggage Week , for which dozens of suitcases, backpacks, and weekender bags were road-tested by our editors.

beis travel backpack review

I was worried that the Béis carry-on would be overstuffed with a week’s worth of clothes for two people, but I managed to fit everything I needed. When you first open the carry-on you’re met with two garment bags that are ideal for holding dirty laundry or damp clothing. The right side features a detachable side panel that has mesh pockets for extra security, while the left side has two zippered pockets that are perfect for your toiletries. On a recent flight, I had to check this carry-on at the gate when there was limited overhead space. Although dirty, it returned to us scuff-free! I would recommend this to any traveler who is an exclusive team carry-on member and might be in the market for complimentary travel bags. If you're interested in expanding your luggage collection, Béis does an excellent job of creating pieces that work well together (and look good, too).

What we love most: The garment bags and cushioned suitcase handle Dimensions: 10" x 23" x 16" Colors available : Beige, black, gray, atlas pink, navy, citron, berry, plaid, creamsicle, olive, and maple

A bag.

This weekender was Béis’s very first product and its earned a huge cult-following on social media. The interior has a water-resistant lining and multiple pockets for small travel accessories like jewelry or charging cords. The extra roomy bottom compartment can fit several pairs of shoes and keep them separated from your clean clothes. On the back, there’s a trolley sleeve so you can place the bag on top of your carry-on or check-in roller—a true game-changer when navigating through the airport.

What we love most: The laptop sleeve and separate shoe compartment Dimensions: 20" x 10" x 16" Colors available: Beige, black, gray, atlas pink, navy, citron, berry, plaid, creamsicle, olive, and maple

beis travel backpack review

For those travelers who are working with limited storage space at home, this is the ideal carry-on for you. It can be expanded to give you extra packing room or collapsed so it can fit into smaller spaces. The exterior has a padded sleeve for your laptop, a keychain latch, and a pocket with a port to thread your cords and chargers on the go. This carry-on has been a favorite of senior commerce editor Madison Flager , “this is a Béis bag I love. It’s so easy to store since it collapses down flat, but does fit a decent amount when expanded; I used it on a four-day trip recently and had enough space,” she says. It’s lightweight and made from durable polyester that can be spot-cleaned.

What we love most: The bag's collapsible frame and the exterior pocket with a headphone port Dimensions: 14" x 9" x 22" (not collapsed); 14" x 7" x 22" (collapsed) Colors available: Black

beis travel backpack review

Travelers can stay hydrated and hands-free on the go with this water bottle sling bag —a favorite of Flager's for active days. It's a great accessory for trips where you're getting your steps in or can serve as the ultimate gym buddy. The lightweight sling can fit a 32-ounce water bottle while still offering enough room for small essentials such as your phone, keys, and ID. It comes with an adjustable strap that lets you wear it as a crossbody.

What we love most: The adjustable strap and drawstring lock closure Dimensions: 4" x 4" x 8" Colors available : Beige and black

beis travel backpack review

When it comes to checked luggage , you want something that can hold enough clothes and travel essentials for a full week or longer. Associate commerce editor Meaghan Kenny recently traveled with it for a nine-day trip to Italy and was surprised by its durability: "when it’s empty, this bag is durable yet isn’t too heavy—I could lift it up myself with no problem. As large as this suitcase is, I didn’t struggle to roll it around, lifting it up to be weighed at the airport, or pulling it onto a busy train,” she says. While the outside has a sleek rippled design with four smooth rolling wheels, the interior has two separate sides. One side has a detachable mesh panel with two compression straps to buckle across and the other side side can be completely zipped with two zippered pockets on top. While that might seem like plenty of space, overpackers will appreciate that the Check-In Roller can be expanded for two extra inches.

What we love most: The built-in weight indicator and TSA–approved combination lock Dimensions: 11" x 18" x 28" Colors available : Beige, black, gray, atlas pink, navy, citron, berry, plaid, creamsicle, olive, and maple

beis travel backpack review

We've all been there: you forget to pack something and need to reopen your bag and do some last-minute reorganizing. One of the best features of the soft-sided carry-on is that it offers a front zip entry for easy access into the bag. For overpackers, it might be a little hard to handle through the airport, but it's an ideal option for road trips where you aren’t constantly moving it. This collapsible roller is made for longer trips where extra space is essential.

What we love most: Front-zipper access and it’s easy to store Dimensions: 19" x 13" x 32" (not collapsed); 19" x 7" x 32" (when collapsed) Colors available: Black

beis travel backpack review

The Mini Weekender is very similar to its predecessor. It offers the same features you know and love, but in a smaller version. The interior has a laptop sleeve, two pockets, and a keychain latch; the exterior has a pocket on the front and a trolley sleeve. I’ve used this for a road trip where I didn't need to carry it much and a short weekend to New Jersey by train where I had to lug it around my shoulder for the duration of the trip. The handles are incredibly soft and thick, which is a must-have for any over-the-shoulder bag. While waiting in line for the bus, I didn’t find myself shifting or moving the bag around because it was surprisingly comfortable due to its size. The bag also has a long strap so you can wear the bag two ways if over-the-shoulder isn’t your vibe.

What we love most: Its versatility and adjustable strap Dimensions: 16" x 16" x 8" Colors available : Beige, black, gray, atlas pink, navy, citron, berry, plaid, creamsicle, olive, and maple

Calpak Luka Duffel vs. Béis Weekender: We Tested Both Travel Bags to See Which One Reigns Supreme

calpak luka vs beis weekender

A good travel bag has to check a few boxes: It’s utilitarian and fits all of your things without bursting at the seams, it’s comfortable to carry through airports and giant train stations and it looks good. Sounds straightforward enough, but with so many options on the market, it can be tough to zero in on that Cinderella bag. That’s why I decided to put two of the most internet-beloved travel bags to the test: the Calpak Luka Duffel ($128) and the Béis Weekender ($108). I’ve taken both bags on multiple trips—both short weekend getaways and multi-stop international journeys—and here’s my honest review.

What Sets Calpak and Beis Apart?

Calpak and Béis are two of the most popular travel accessory brands right now, and for good reason (as you’ll soon see). Calpak was founded in 1989 and started as a small collection of handbags and wallets. Béis was founded in 2018 by actress Shea Mitchell, and quickly went viral. Each brand has since expanded to sell hard-side luggage, organizational bags, work totes, garment bags and more, all at affordable prices considering their high quality.

How I Tested the Travel Bags

I’ve used each of these bags on multiple occasions, but for the sake of this review, I’m going to compare how they fared on two separate, two-week-long international trips with stops in three countries (and transportation via plane, train and car). On flights, I used the Calpak Luka as an under-seat item, whereas I stowed the Béis Weekender in the overhead compartment. Each bag has been lugged from London to Positano to Amsterdam to Berlin on planes and taxis and trains. And as much as I wish I was someone who treated their belongings with the utmost respect and care, I’m just not that person. I put my travel bags through the ringer and luckily, these two have risen to the occasion.

What to Pack in a Carry-On Bag? Here Are 20 Essential Items, According to a Profesh Traveler

calpak luka vs beis weekender photo of calpak luka duffle in copper

My Calpak Luka Duffel Review

What we like.

  • lightweight and comfortable to carry
  • lots of color options
  • easy to store between trips

What We Don't Like

  • shoe compartment is bulky when in use
  • slightly more expensive than Béis
  • Aesthetic: 19/20
  • Organizational Capability: 18/20
  • Comfort: 20/20
  • Durability: 18/20
  • Value: 18/20

TOTAL: 93/100

While I’ve had my Béis Weekender for a couple of years, the Calpak Luka is a newer addition to my travel bag collection—and it’s already made an impression. The Luka duffel is super lightweight and ultra comfortable to carry, thanks to its padded exterior. It features nine different pockets—both zippered and not—and a built-in shoe compartment (that I typically don’t use because I find it takes up too much space when filled with shoes). It has smaller top handles, a detachable long strap and a trolley sleeve that’s a godsend when you’re traveling with a rolling suitcase. While it holds a ton of stuff, it’s still compact enough to be used as a personal item and it fits comfortably underneath the seats of multiple airlines I’ve flown (though you should check the airline’s website beforehand to make sure the specs are OK).

I got my Luka in the limited edition copper color, and while I do love the way it looks (especially paired with my white Away carry-on), I think I would’ve been happier with a subtler neutral in the long run. (Note that there’s also a Luka Large Duffel if you want even more space.) A huge pro to this bag is that it’s so easy to store in between trips. Unlike the Béis bag, which is a bit harder to compress into small spaces, the Luka is so squishy that I can maneuver it to fit into any available nook or cranny—a major win for those of us who don’t have a ton of extra space.

  • Size: 12" x 16" x 7"

  • Compartments: nine

  • Trolley Sleeve: yes

My Béis Weekender Review

  • grown-up, refined look
  • metal feet keep the bottom clean
  • structured under-bag compartment comes in handy
  • can feel bulky to wear with the long strap
  • fewer color options
  • Organizational Capability: 17/20
  • Durability: 19/20
  • Value: 17/20

TOTAL: 92/100

I love this bag and have already reviewed it on its own. To summarize my experience, I’ll say this: Anytime I travel with this bag, I feel like a fancy woman who has her life together (even though I’m not actually a fancy woman who has her life together). The bag’s main compartment is roomy, and has multiple pockets, and the opening has a wire frame built in that lets you prop it open to see everything inside. But the real selling point, in my opinion, is the spacious zippered compartment at the bottom of the bag, which is perfect for storing shoes, toiletry bags or even dirty laundry. Like the Luka duffel, it has a shorter strap, a detachable longer strap and a trolley sleeve. If I’m not using the trolley sleeve feature, I typically opt for the top handles, but that’s just because I *hate* when long bags slam into my body as I walk.

While I’ve seen that you can jam it underneath the seat in front of you on certain airlines, I’ve always opted to store my Weekender in the overhead compartment. (Béis also has an equally chic Mini Weekender and Convertible Mini Weekender that might be better for folks looking to use it as a personal item.) The biggest issue I’ve had with this bag is that, because it can fit so much, it’s very easy to weigh it down with too much stuff and end up struggling to tote it around. As mentioned earlier, it’s also a bit harder to store than the Luka duffel, but that shouldn’t be an issue if you aren’t super tight on space.

  • Size: 19in x D 9.8in x H 15.7
  • Capacity: 49L
  • Compartments: seven
  • Colors: eight

Calpak vs. Béis Final Notes

Honestly, you can’t go wrong with either of these bags; it really just comes down to preference and which one will better suit your travel needs. Personally, I choose between the Calpak Luka and Béis Weekender based on the trip I have planned. For flights, I’m more apt to take the Calpak, as it slides under the seat in front of me easily but still holds a ton, while Béis wins out for car and train rides because it holds slightly more and I prefer the under-bag storage. The bottom line is that these are both stellar travel bags that get the job done in style and without breaking the bank. What more could you ask for?

Even a short trip with kids in tow can feel like an epic journey, and taking the right diaper bag along for the ride is crucial. A backpack-style diaper bag is key for comfort while you’re out and about; ideally, you’ll want a model that holds all the necessities for both you and baby and is even, dare we say, stylish? We tested 30 diaper bag backpacks to find the best options, whether you’re venturing out for the day or pulling an overnighter with your kids.

The best diaper backpacks offer multiple compartments and easy access to the critical items inside — because no one wants to rummage through a shapeless, disorganized bag while juggling a crying baby. We evaluated bags based on their capacity, design, comfort, and value, both in our New York City lab and over the course of six months out in the real world for long-term testing. We loaded (and reloaded) each bag with bottles, wipes, and diapers, schlepped around the city wearing them. We crammed them into strollers and gave them each the one-handed-holding-a-crying-baby test. (Learn more about our in-depth testing process below.) The models that passed with flying colors were comfortable, intuitive, easy to open, and stylish.

Best Overall

Bugaboo changing backpack.

  • Capacity 5 /5
  • Design 5 /5
  • Comfort 5 /5
  • Value 4.5 /5

This sleek bag was incredibly comfortable, even fully loaded, and necessities were easy to access via a handy front zipper.

The outer pouch for an adult water bottle is on the slim side and may not fit all bottles.

We love the mix of form and function this backpack offers. It includes both a laptop pocket and a changing mat, and has plenty of snug, intuitive pockets to keep necessities organized. Even when fully loaded with baby gear and a laptop, we found it to be comfortable and light, with the weight of our items distributed evenly. Plus, it looks great — we’d carry this bag even without a baby in tow.

The easy-to-use front zipper on this backpack makes it stand out from some other models we tested. We could access everything we needed via the front, including the changing mat, without having to fully open up the bag and dig around. The velcro top closure is equally simple to use, even one-handed. The bag’s leakproof interior is standard among most diaper backpacks, but the water-resistant bottom is a huge plus — even external spills won’t ruin the bag or its contents. The side pocket meant to hold an adult water bottle is a little narrow and doesn’t fit a larger bottle but is fine for a standard size.

Although this backpack is one of the taller models we tested, it still fits easily in the cargo basket underneath both large jogging strollers and smaller umbrella strollers. And, it includes straps to easily attach the bag to the handle of most models. Overall we found this to be the most user-friendly, durable, and stylish option we tested.

Best Organization

Ruvalino diaper bag backpack.

  • Design 4.8 /5
  • Comfort 4.5 /5

With five separate zippered compartments, this backpack is an organized parent’s dream.

Compartments are challenging to access one-handed.

This accordion-like bag features multiple zippered compartments and 16 pockets, so there’s a designated space for just about any item you’d need to carry. The separate sections keep everything well-organized and in place, and prevent items from getting hopelessly buried. Even fully loaded, the bag’s weight is evenly distributed, and its padded straps feel comfortable and secure. The two insulated bottle pockets in the main compartment are a nice touch, too, and make it easy to safely bring along formula or breastmilk for a short trip.

Our biggest issue with this bag is the accessibility of the compartments — because of the placement of the zippers, it’s nearly impossible to access most compartments one-handed. We found ourselves needing to set down either the bag or the baby in order to retrieve items from inside, which can be challenging when you’re on the move. Otherwise, this is a well-designed bag that seamlessly fits everything you need for a successful outing.

The Details: 1.78 pounds | 11.8 x 7.8 x 16.5 inches | 25-liter capacity | Water-resistant polyester

Best Convertible

Caraa nylon baby bag.

This bag is roomy and comfortable with versatile strap options.

The backpack straps are difficult to adjust, and the bag doesn’t include a changing mat.

A cross-body diaper bag can sometimes be an easier style to travel with when you’re carrying multiple bags, and we love that this option lets you choose how you want to wear it. It has a plethora of pockets and compartments — more than we could fill in our testing, really — and a comfortable, pillow-like design. The long pulls on its external zippers make it easy to open one-handed, and items inside stayed in place during testing even when we jostled it around.

This bag doesn’t include a changing mat or a wet bag like some models, but it does have insulated, wipeable interior pockets for bottles and clothes. The shoulder strap and backpack options are equally comfortable, although the backpack straps weren’t as easy to adjust as we would’ve liked. At nearly twice the price of most other bags we tested, this one is on the more expensive side, but it is a stylish, well-designed, and versatile option for travel.

The Details: 2.5 pounds | 12.25 x 12 x 5 inches | 12-liter capacity | Recycled nylon

Best Colors

Jujube zealous backpack.

  • Design 4.5 /5

This lightweight, compact backpack comes in over 17 different colorways.

The bag’s main zipper sometimes gets caught when zipping and unzipping.

The JuJuBe Zealous backpack comes in more colors and patterns than any other model we reviewed, so it’s easy to coordinate with any other luggage or bags you may be carrying. The interior feels spacious with plenty of pockets, but the bag still feels compact overall. We found the exterior zippered pockets to be especially intuitive, and love that one contained dividers and a key ring for all our non-baby essentials. Pockets are easy to access with one hand, although the main zipper occasionally got stuck during testing.

This bag’s smaller footprint makes it comfortable and lightweight to wear, and it fits into both larger and more compact strollers. It also features a couple less common but very useful compartments: a “tech” pocket on top, which could be used for anything you need easy access to, and a pair of loops in the main compartment for holding a baby blanket in place. We’d recommend this pick for anyone who wants more color choices without skimping on features.

The Details: 2.1 pounds | 11 x 5 x 16 inches

Best Discreet

Herschel settlement sprout backpack.

This is a high-quality, versatile backpack that can be used beyond the diaper years.

It lacks many of the diaper-bag-specific features that many models boast.

If you’re looking for a diaper backpack that doesn’t scream “I’m a parent!,” the Herschel Settlement Sprout backpack is a great option. It comes with a removable changing mat, and features the all-important side zipper to easily access items at the bottom of the bag. The bag’s zippers were a little harder to use than other models we tested, but they got the job done. This backpack also comes with a Velcro piece that can divide the large main compartment into two — a feature we especially liked for the option to convert it from a “regular” backpack to a diaper backpack easily.

The only real drawback to this timeless, durable bag is that it lacks many of the features that make diaper bags especially useful to parents — but that’s also the key to its versatility. It’s a solid choice for those looking for a diaper bag now, and a well-made backpack later.

The Details: 1.4 pounds | 17.75 x 12.25 x 5.75 inches | 34-liter capacity

Best Large Capacity

Béis ultimate diaper backpack.

  • Capacity 4.5 /5
  • Comfort 4 /5

This bag holds more than any others we tested and comes with a detachable fanny pack.

Its large capacity also means it’s a big bag, and it feels heavy when fully loaded.

The Béis Ultimate Diaper Backpack has tons of space and multiple compartments — we can’t imagine running out of room for necessary items, even when packing for multiple kids. The included “changing station” includes convenient pockets for diapers, wipes, and cream all within easy reach, but since the changing pad is built in, babies will likely outgrow this setup quickly. The detachable fanny pack is a convenient feature to offset the size of the bag; it’d be easy to throw your wallet and keys in the pack and grab them separately when needed.

There is a price to pay for this bag’s convenient features, though: it’s big, and it borders on unmanageable. We had to set the bag down to access anything inside, and when wearing it fully loaded, it felt heavy and unevenly distributed. Because of this, we’d recommend this model for longer trips when capacity really counts versus day trips when the focus is on convenient access.

The Details: 3 pounds | 12.5 x 16 x 7.25 inches | Nylon twill with vegan leather trim

Best With Luggage Sleeve

7am enfant london backpack.

This bag’s removable diaper caddy and attached suitcase strap make it especially handy for travel.

The grab handles are not as comfortable or convenient as we’d like, so this bag is less versatile than it appears.

With its attached luggage sleeve and quilted patent look, the 7AM Enfant London Backpack is a chic option for air travel or overnight stays. We found the design of this bag to be especially thoughtful: it includes a laptop pocket, plus a removable diaper caddy with insulated bottle pockets (a feature we didn’t find in many models we tested). The attached stroller straps and luggage sleeve also make it adaptable for whichever mode of travel you choose that day.

There’s plenty of room inside the bag for wipes, a change of clothes, diapers, bottles, and more, so it's easy to pack for flying with a baby . However, it’s worth noting that it can be challenging to access everything one-handed. The removable diaper caddy helps address this: lifting out the caddy kept everything we needed at arm’s reach. The bag is less comfortable to wear with the included shoulder straps, but worn as a backpack, it’s comfortable and stable. This is a great choice when you’re juggling other luggage in addition to your baby’s bag.

The Details: 2.1 pounds | 14 x 11 x 5 inches | 14-liter capacity | Polyester

Best With Changing Station

Baby brezza dante changing station diaper bag.

  • Design 4 /5

This bag’s drop-down changing pad is a game-changer, and we love the 13 different pockets for organization.

It’s challenging to access items inside the bag with one hand.

The Baby Brezza Dante Diaper Backpack is not a compact option, but its multiple compartments and built-in changing station make great use of its ample space. There’s plenty of room to store food, bottles, and changing necessities, and we loved the unique antimicrobial pocket for keeping pacifiers ick-free.

The built-in changing station is this bag’s standout feature: the back of the bag unzips to access a dropdown changing pad with small nylon “walls” to keep baby’s hands from grabbing at less-than-clean surfaces and pouches to keep diapers and wipes in easy reach. Unlike some models we tested, this changing station can detach, making it more versatile. Because of its large size and various compartments, this bag is not as easy to manage and access one-handed, but it’s a smart choice if space and a changing station are your top priorities.

The Details: 3 pounds | 16 x 14 x 7 inches | 17-liter capacity | Polyester

Best for Overnight Stays

Honest city backpack.

This bag is roomy, stylish, and very comfortable to wear while walking around, making it ideal for an overnight trip.

Its key holder pocket is buried deep in the interior and not easily accessible from the outside.

Space and versatility are key when you’re packing up for an overnight trip with a baby, and the Honest City Backpack offers both. It’s plenty roomy inside with two large exterior pockets, and it contains both a wet bag for soiled clothing and insulated pockets for bottles and snacks. The wipeable vegan leather exterior gives it a professional, grown-up look — we could just as easily envision using this bag to haul a laptop and snacks to work.

Even fully loaded, the padded straps make this backpack comfortable to wear around, and we had no problem accessing the outer zippered pockets one-handed. We did find ourselves wishing for a more easily accessible space for keys — the dedicated key pocket is buried deep in the bag and hard to reach on the go. Still, we’d recommend this to anyone who needs a stylish overnight bag for both grown-up and baby essentials.

The Details: 2.75 pounds | 17.7 x 14.9 x 18.1 inches | 15-liter capacity | Polyurethane vegan leather

Best for Short Outings

Fawn design the original diaper bag.

Fawn Design

  • Capacity 4 /5
  • Value 4.3 /5

This bag’s stylish design and more compact size make it easy to grab for quick day trips.

There’s no changing mat or insulated bottle pockets included.

For shorter trips around town, the Fawn Design Backpack is a stylish, easy-to-carry choice. The faux leather has a nice feel, and we love the easily adjustable straps. We were easily able to fit most necessities inside the bag, but adding in a wet bag and a changing mat would be a squeeze in this model — one of the key drawbacks to this bag. It features plenty of pockets for grown-up essentials, too, including a zippered pocket that lays flat against the wearer’s back to keep valuables extra secure.

We had no trouble operating the bag one-handed, from adjusting straps to opening pockets, and although the straps aren’t padded like some models we tested, they are surprisingly comfortable. The lack of an insulated pocket for bottles or a changing mat makes this bag less functional for long outings, but we found this to be a great choice for a shorter day trip.

The Details: 4 pounds | 13 x 13.5 x 7 inches | Faux leather

Best Lightweight

Jujube travel backpack.

This is one of the smallest, lightest models we tested.

Its features are more basic than some models on the market.

The JuJuBe Right Back is a small, lightweight option that still offers plenty of compartments for organizing necessities. It’s understated and high quality, and its pockets cater to parents’ needs, including a glasses pocket, a wallet compartment, and an elastic strap for keys. It lacks the clever features some models have, like a built-in wipes compartment, but the included components are versatile enough that it still met most of our needs during testing.

This bag feels incredibly lightweight while wearing it, and the padded straps are easy to adjust. Because of its compact size, it fits easily into the cargo area of even a smaller stroller. We had no issues accessing most items in the bag one-handed, although we did have to remove the bag to access the changing pad. Some items, like the changing pad and an adult water bottle, are a tight fit in this bag, but it’s a good choice for a lighter weight backpack.

The Details: 2 pounds | 12 x 16 x 5 inches | 17-liter capacity | Polyester

Itzy Ritzy Mini Diaper Bag Backpack

  • Durability 5 /5

This mini backpack still holds everything you need for a day out with your baby.

The thin, unpadded straps make it less comfortable to carry.

The Itzy Ritzy Mini Diaper Bag is just that — a miniature version of a backpack that still has most of the features parents need for a day out. It offers fewer pockets than full-size versions (four external and four internal) and, because of the small size, the pockets themselves are a little less versatile. But, it was still possible for us to squeeze all our necessities into this compact bag and we like that it wasn’t bulky to carry around.

The front of the bag opens completely, so it’s easy to take inventory of what’s inside, and every zipper could be operated one-handed during testing. However, this backpack lacks padding overall — the included changing pad is a thin vegan leather mat, and the unpadded straps aren’t very comfortable to wear which is something to consider if you’ll be wearing this for long periods. In general this bag holds less gear because of its diminutiveness, but if a manageable size is priority one for your outing, this is a solid choice.

The Details: 2.1 pounds | 11.5 x 7.5 x 13.75 inches | Polyurethane

Other Diaper Bag Backpacks We Liked

Five of the diaper backpacks we tested did not make our list of top recommendations yet still stood out from the pack. The following bags all had positive attributes, but a few things held them back.

Petunia Pickle Bottom Tempo Backpack : We love this backpack for its gender-neutral design and its deceptively large capacity, but the lack of interior zippered pockets was not ideal.

HapTim Large Baby Diaper Bag : This unfussy option has a huge capacity and nice padding. However, the only access to the interior pockets are from the top, which makes it less user-friendly.

Dagne Dover Indi Diaper Backpack : The comfort and chic design of this backpack nearly won us over — it felt like wearing a cloud. However, the interior pockets lost their shape and functionality when we packed other items into the main compartment, making this a less optimal choice.

We spent a day in our New York City lab testing 30 backpack-style diaper bags with a range of features. We evaluated each bag based on capacity, design, comfort, and value, and since durability is key for diaper bags, we spent an additional six months long-term testing the products.

We weighed each backpack ourselves both empty and full, and zipped and unzipped each compartment multiple times to test for ease of use. We packed each bag full of baby (and parent) essentials, making note of how intuitive each bag was to pack and whether there were designated slots for necessities.

To simulate a day out with a little one, we took each bag on a brisk walk and loaded it into two different sized strollers. We also gave each bag the crying baby test: using one hand, we tested accessing items inside and repacking them to evaluate whether the bag would be easy to use while holding a fussy baby or toddler. The bags that ranked highest on all our tests were selected for this roundup.

Tips for Buying Diaper Bag Backpacks for Travel

Decide the best size for your needs.

Diaper bag backpacks can vary widely in size and capacity, so consider the distance and duration of your trip before you start shopping. For air travel, you may want to consider a bag that is smaller than 18 x 14 x 8 inches (standard personal-item size) and has easily accessible pockets for your wallet and phone; overnight stays closer to home might call for a larger capacity bag you can toss in the backseat. For day trips and short outings, comfort and portability are key, so look for padded straps and a lighter weight, but you may be able to forgo insulated pockets or built-in changing stations.

Prioritize organization

When you’re on the hunt for a diaper bag backpack for travel, prioritize intuitive pockets and zippered compartments. Consider how many essentials you’ll need to bring and your specific organization style, whether you prefer a dedicated pocket for each item or a more flexible and freeform setup. Look for bags that offer dedicated space for both baby’s items and grown-up necessities to avoid losing your keys or phone in a pile of toys and teethers.

Look for water-resistant material

Diaper bag backpacks are prone to spills by nature, so you’ll want a bag that’s easy to wipe clean and keep moving. Look for an interior that’s described as “stain resistant,” “water resistant,” or “wipeable”; polyester or polyurethane (also known as faux leather or vegan leather) are wise choices.

Choose the right bag for multiple users

Unlike your purse or laptop bag, a diaper backpack is meant to go wherever your baby goes — no matter who’s carrying it. As you’re selecting the perfect diaper backpack for your family, consider who all will be using the bag. A sleek, gender-neutral design can make a diaper backpack more versatile for any caregiver, and a manageable size might be important for petite users.

Frequently Asked Questions

While you can technically use any backpack as a diaper bag, products specifically designed as “diaper backpacks” offer more baby-specific features, like insulated pockets for bottles and snacks, multiple compartments to organize essentials, changing pads, and wet bags. Diaper backpacks are also typically made of water-resistant, washable, or wipeable material to make cleanup easier, and usually offer padded straps for comfort.

Your diaper bag packing list will depend on your needs, the age of your child, and the length of your trip. Typically, you’ll want to bring along diapers and wipes, a change of clothes, a toy or two, spare pacifiers if your child uses them, and bottles or snacks. If you’re bringing along breastmilk or prepared formula and need to keep it cold until you’re ready to serve it, tuck a lightweight ice pack into your bag’s insulated pocket to keep milk at a safe temperature.

Consider the weather and location before you pack: for summer travel, toss in a sunhat and baby-safe sunscreen, and for cooler weather, add a light layer and/or a baby blanket if space permits. Hand sanitizer, burp cloths, and a small first aid kit also come in handy, and most parents choose to throw their own essentials — wallet, keys, phone, and water — in the bag as well.

Many airlines don’t count diaper bags or diaper backpacks as a personal item or carry-on, which means you’ll be able to board with your purse or tote, carry-on suitcase, and diaper bag. The policy varies by airline, however; United and American Airlines allow families to bring a diaper bag for free, while Delta and Alaska count diaper bags as a carry-on item. Be sure to confirm with your specific airline before you travel.

If you plan on traveling with kids in the near future, here are some other useful items you may want to pick up ahead of your trip.

Joolz AER+ Travel Stroller : This is our overall favorite pick out of all the travel strollers we've tested , proving to be the quickest to assemble. It only weighs 13 pounds, so you can leave your clunkier strollers at home. Plus, it's easy to collapse when you need to fold it up into a compact package for flights.

Veer All-terrain Cruiser : When we tested beach wagons , this was our favorite for carrying kids. It has the ability to haul up to 55 pounds on each of its two seats and 350 pounds altogether, and we found the wheels large and sturdy enough to maneuver over sandy terrain.

Open Story Signature Weekender Bag

Open Story’s Signature Weekender Bag comes in two colors — black or taupe — which you can mix and match to your luggage. The design has gathered a 4.7-star rating (out of five), with Target shoppers applauding how it “fits perfectly under the plane seat [even when] completely full.” The bag also comes with many pockets, including a main compartment that can fit 35L of items such as your clothes, as well as an interior zip compartment, padded laptop compartment, side slip pockets and an exterior zip pocket. Its versatile design enables it to go from a tote or duffle, while the built-in back slip can slide onto your carry-on handle to roll it from one place to another.

For those curious about the original style, it’s become popular for frequent travelers — especially for the bag’s standout bottom compartment, which can unzip to store shoes and toiletries, or for keeping your clothes separate.

Beis Weekender Bag

You can pick from nine shades ranging from neutral colors of beige, black and gray to statement colors such as pink, blue and green. The Weekender Bag is a functional carry-on, providing an easy-access tote opening and a trolley sleeve to attach to your rolling luggage to help keep your hands free.

The travel bag has earned a 4.8-star rating on the brand’s website from more than 12,000 reviews. Shoppers have praised its interior, with one person saying “it’s spacious, deep and functional.” In our experience, the compartment on the bottom of the bag is quite spacious too, and you’d be surprised just how much fits in this bag.

Is it better to travel with a backpack or suitcase?

The best travel backpack is a versatile carry-on bag that allows you to easily maneuver—hands-free—through busy airports and crowded towns. If you're backpacking or traveling by foot, portability is paramount, so backpacks are usually the best bet. But, if you're going on a longer trip and need to pack more items, a roller suitcase or hard shell luggage might be a better option.

What size travel backpack do I need?

For vacations longer than a week, check out the top luggage brands and best luggage sets . And if you're on a budget, scope out the best luggage deals for major discounts.

How much can fit in a carry-on backpack?

The best carry-on backpack should be able to hold at least a couple of days' worth of clothes, accessories, shoes and toiletries . Using packing cubes and compression bags and rolling clothes help maximize space in the backpack. But the exact amount of stuff that fits will vary depending on the style and design of the bag.

Most airlines allow a carry-on with a maximum size of 22 inches by 14 inches by 9 inches and a weight of 22 pounds (although, many domestic airlines don't have weight restrictions). July Luggage Review 2024: Does it Live Up to The Hype?

Spoiler: I think I've finally found my new favorite hardside luggage brand.

july luggage review

We've been independently researching and testing products for over 120 years. If you buy through our links, we may earn a commission. Learn more about our review process.

What I thought of July Luggage

The bottom line: should you buy july luggage, why trust good housekeeping.

If you're anything like me, finding the right luggage is easier said than done, especially if you're looking for a stylish, non-basic option.

At the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab, we've tested over 100 suitcases in recent years t o find the best carry-on and checked luggage available both in our Lab and on hundreds of trips. As a textiles product reviews analyst, I've personally packed dozens of suitcases, assessed damage from our drop tester, evaluated scratch resistance and traveled with several of our top-tested luggage brands .

I recently took July's Classic Family Luggage Set (which includes a carry-on and two checked suitcases) on four international flights, traveling between three countries for multiple weeks. Several of our consumer testers also tried the brand's Carry-On Light , which the brand calls the lightest luggage you'll find, on a variety of domestic trips.

What is July luggage?

Named after the most popular month for traveling, July's suitcases were designed to bridge the gap between budget bags and luxury luggage, offering thoughtfully designed luggage at a more accessible price point. Since its start in 2018, the brand has expanded to three luggage collections (Classic, Light and Trunk) plus various bags , like weekenders and totes , and travel accessories .

July Carry On

Carry On

The Classic Carry-On is July's most popular product. It's made with polycarbonate, a popular material in hardside luggage , and each corner is capped with an anodized aluminum bumper for added protection.

July Carry-On Light

Carry-On Light

The Carry-On Light is another popular product, and the brand calls it, "the lightest double-wheel suitcase in the world" at 3.9 pounds. Hardside luggage is known for its lightweight nature, but as certain airlines lower their weight limits (even for carry-ons), every ounce counts. Still, it has a 32L capacity, making it less spacious compared to other popular options.

July Classic Family Luggage Set

Classic Family Luggage Set

On my most recent trips, I traveled with July's Classic Family Set , which includes the Classic Carry-On, Checked and Checked Plus . While some luggage sets may come at a discount, July's do not, but sets do ship with the suitcases nested inside each other to save space.

July's luggage has a simple yet sleek appearance. On the Classic line, the aluminum corners provide an added edge, elevating otherwise minimalist suitcases. In person, I immediately noticed how luxurious each suitcase felt: The exterior felt solid and substantial while the interior felt buttery smooth with a notable Y-strap over the standard compression panel. Note that the Carry-On Light instead features two zippered components with no compression panels.

The telescopic handle (pictured) stops at 20 different heights, meaning it will stop without falling down immediately, although it doesn't fully lock in until lifted to half its full height. It's also slightly slanted, for a more ergonomic hold. Some of our consumer testers appreciated this when wheeling it through our in-Lab obstacle course, but as someone with smaller hands, I found it a bit odd, although not uncomfortable.

a hand holding the handle of a carry on

The standard Carry-On also comes with a built-in power bank, which can be a nice perk, but I personally didn't use it while traveling due to the added bulk. When I tried it on its own, it charged quickly but noticeably warmed up. You can skip the power bank if you'd like by purchasing the Carry-On Essential , though it does not have the aluminum bumpers.

July also allows you to personalize your new suitcase for an added cost. This is great for easily spotting your checked luggage on a baggage carousel or in the event that your carry-on gets moved around or checked at the gate. I didn't personalize my luggage, as it delays the shipping, but I've always plastered colorful stickers on all my luggage to make sure it doesn't get confused. July's personalization, though, is definitely more intentional and long-lasting compared to my DIY endeavors.

Performance

I've tested many, many suitcases, but I've never used luggage that glided as smoothly as July's through an airport. Often, even when using pricey or top-tested luggage, I feel self-conscious, especially on moving walkways: The noises my other carry-ons have made in the past vary from slightly squeaky to loud, but this wasn't a problem with July. The wheels effortlessly accompanied me throughout several airports without any issues. During in-Lab testing, participants in our obstacle course agreed, giving July some of the highest scores for ease of use, particularly for its smooth, 360-degree wheels and adjustable handle.

a person holding a suitcase

In terms of packability, the Classic Carry-On, Checked and Check Plus were fairly standard compared to other hardside luggage, fitting our standard load with room to spare. Each included a thoughtful laundry bag for dirty clothes. The Carry-On Light, however, wasn't able to fit everything in our standard four-night packing load, so it's best for shorter trips.

When it comes to hardside luggage, polycarbonate is king, and all of July's suitcases are made of polycarbonate. It's an extremely durable material with excellent impact resistance, yet it's still lightweight, proving well-rounded when compared to other plastics or metals like aluminum.

It doesn't have the best scratch resistance, which we saw during testing, notably when we used a wire to scratch the surface of July's suitcases in the Lab. Still, when I assessed the Checked and Checked Plus suitcases (pictured), I didn't notice much wear and tear on the polycarbonate material (especially after wiping it down). The aluminum bumpers did show some damage though, with some visible scratches up close.

a checked suitcase after a long haul flight with some wear

In our drop tests, which involve packing a suitcase with a set weight before releasing it from a 3-foot height at various angles, July came away without any dents, damages or changes in appearance.

Warranty & Return Policy

July's luggage comes with a "lifetime warranty." But this doesn't necessarily mean you can purchase it once and use it forever. The brand says it will repair or replace products with manufacturing faults on the wheels, zips, handles and compression straps. Certain cracks and breakages to the polycarbonate shell are also covered, but cosmetic damage is not. Be sure to thoroughly document it if you suspect something's off with your luggage.

The brand also offers a 100-day return policy, but it's only for new, unused luggage in its original packaging. Personalized luggage is exempt, as it's considered bespoke, as are notably discounted items (i.e. Final Call and Weekender promotional purchases). There's also a $20 return fee.

If you're looking for minimalist hardside luggage with a bit of personality , I would recommend investing in any of the suitcases from the Classic line (the Carry-On, Checked and Checked Plus). I've tested many suitcases in my role at Good Housekeeping, and July might be my new favorite luggage brand. The maneuverability is unparalleled , thanks to its smooth wheels and adjustable handle, and the materials feel sleek and durable.

The suitcases faired well in our tests , earning high scores for their ease of use in our in-Lab obstacle course and durability during drop testing. Note that the polycarbonate material can scuff, but this was easily wiped away in my experience. The aluminum bumpers don't have the best scratch resistance, though.

When it comes to the Carry-On Light, my recommendation depends on the type of traveler you are. The suitcase is incredibly light, but it isn't quite as versatile due to its smaller size. If you go on lots of quick trips or if you'd rather use a rolling suitcase over a weekender bag or travel backpack , then the Carry-On Light is a great choice.

Still, the return policy, while fairly standard, isn't the most generous, and the lifetime warranty isn't a fix-all, so I encourage you to thoughtfully examine any July luggage you purchase.

What to Look For In a Stylish Backpack for Women

  • Support and comfort: Backpacks are all about ease, and comfort is a top consideration when choosing the best one for you. “Unlike a heavy purse, a backpack gives you a lot better posture. It also divvies out the weight of whatever’s in the contents of the bag, as it’s thrown on the whole body rather than just one side,” says Wark. “It’s smart for those who are on-the-go a lot, especially when you’re on your feet.” Pay close attention to the size and material of the shoulder straps, and go for adjustable styles to personalize your needs.
  • Materials: From casual canvas totes to sleek leather backpacks, there are a variety of materials to choose from when searching for your next go-to bag. Opt for water-repellent fabrics like nylon when looking for something to take you outdoors (it’s also easiest to clean), try out a casual-chic look with faux-leather or polyester, or take it luxury with 100 percent leather for the ultimate elevated feel. “You don’t want to spend like $10 on the backpack, because it’s not going to have the proper comfort and material that a more expensive one would have,” Wark explains. “That doesn’t mean you have to spend a fortune, but a backpack is something you want to invest in, much like you would a good handbag.”
  • Style: There are a variety of silhouettes and colors on the market when it comes to backpacks. “First, you want to look for something in a neutral color palette, something really sleek and classic,” Wark advises, “even if it’s a black or a brown, or maybe a cream that you can easily work into your existing wardrobe.” Try out a more traditionally rectangular backpack for campus, roomy pack for hiking, or a mini backpack purse to replace a top handle purse. There are also great, sleek options for both work and travel in modern shapes and varying sizes.
  • Size: When selecting the size of a backpack, first determine what you will carry in the bag. “Consider what kind of compartments you would need,” says Wark. “The more storage solutions inside the backpack, the better. If you just have one open space, it’s going to be incredibly frustrating.” For instance, perhaps a laptop sleeve is a necessity for work (don’t forget to double check dimensions!), or an exterior compartment is key for your water bottle. Smaller backpacks are great for single-use occasions like running to the gym, while larger ones with both interior and exterior pockets are fit for long days at the office, hauling baby gear, and overnight vacays.

If you’re in need of some retail inspiration, why not take a peek into the shopping carts of our readers? In April, Forbes Vetted shoppers were looking to the warmer months ahead, taking special interest in cooling mattresses (for hot summer nights), durable carry-ons (for those tropical getaways) and bronzing mousse (for that perfect sun-kissed look).

The most popular products purchased by Forbes Vetted readers in April.

Below, we’ve rounded up the 27 most popular products that Forbes Vetted readers loved in the month of April—from tech and fashion favorites to thoughtful Mother’s Day gifts. Come back next month to see the products Forbes Vetted readers shopped in May.

The Best iPads For Kids To Help Them Learn And Have Fun

The best xbox controllers to take your gameplay to the max, most popular mattress & sleep products, a cushy bed for side and combo sleepers, helix midnight luxe (queen).

Side and back sleepers will appreciate the hip and shoulder relief provided by our top overall mattress pick. We particularly love the mattress for its appeal to a wide variety of sleepers, from those who run hot while they sleep to couples seeking different firmness preferences. (If you want a mattress with even more support, we recommend the brand’s Dawn Luxe for a medium to medium-firm feel.)

A Cooling Mattress Available In Three Firmness Levels

Brooklyn Bedding

Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe Mattress (Queen)

The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe comprises six layers—many of which are designed to regulate body temperature and combat overheating. Senior sleep editor Bridget Chapman slept on the mattress for several months, and was particularly impressed by its motion isolation, support and ability to keep her from overheating. The mattress comes in three firmness levels to accommodate different sleeping styles.

Snooze Without Breaking A Sweat

Helix midnight luxe mattress with glaciotex cover (queen).

The Helix Midnight Luxe comes with a moisture-wicking Tencel fabric cover, but if you’re really looking to beat the heat while you sleep, you can opt for the GlacioTex cover. The cover, which is an additional $199 when on sale, is made from fibers with high thermal conductivity that draw heat away from the body.

Most Popular Fashion Products

Versatile sneakers for all-day wear.

Brooks Running

Brooks Ghost 15

Whether you’re a speed walker or prefer a leisurely stroll, the Brooks Ghost 15 sneaker is fit for a variety of walking styles. It’s deputy editor Kari Molvar’s go-to shoe for its overall comfort, stability and grippy outsole that can traverse both smooth and rough terrain. Excellent shock absorption also allows the sneaker to seamlessly transition from walking to more high-intensity activities.

A Walking Shoe With A Cloud-Like Feel

On is known (and loved) for its Cloud-Tec cushioning system, which the Swiss brand compares to “running on clouds.” After testing these walking shoes for men and women , we found the brand’s proprietary technology more than lived up to its name, providing all-day comfort, support and breathability.

Running Shoes For Going The Distance

Hoka clifton 9.

Growing tired on a long run is inevitable, but the Hoka Clifton 9 channels the energy from shock absorption to keep you running longer and fight off fatigue. At only 8.7 ounces per shoe in men’s and 7.3 in women’s, the sneaker is also incredibly lightweight, despite the extra padding and support.

Most Popular Gear Products

Safely jump to new heights, jumpzylla 12-foot trampoline.

Jumpzylla’s 12-foot trampoline lets you have boundless fun without sacrificing safety. The trampoline’s sturdy stainless-steel frame is coated in an anti-rust treatment (to better withstand the elements) and the thick safety net keeps jumpers comfortably contained.

A Hiking Shoe Fit For Wide Feet

Altra lone peak 8.

This trail running shoe from Altra has a wide toe box that lets your toes splay out, almost as though you’re barefoot. The Lone Peak 8 also has a zero-drop design, meaning your heel is not elevated above your toes and therefore encourages a natural foot position. While the design can take some getting used to, the end result is a comfortable, roomy hiking shoe.

Most Popular Home Products

Despite its thick Turkish cotton, the towel dries surprisingly fast, and continues to feel soft and smooth after multiple washes.
