Bradford is a city and metropolitan borough in West Yorkshire in the north of England. With a population of about 550,000 (2021) to the east its built-up area runs into that of Leeds , while to the west are Pennine valleys, the " Bronte Country ". It's notable for the many Victorian mills and other buildings from its industrial heyday, and for its high Asian population: some 27% of residents describe themselves as "Asian", their families mostly originating from Pakistan.

Bradford has been a wool-processing town for centuries, but remained small until the 19th century. It then burgeoned as the textile industry evolved from cottage weaving to mass production, related trades such as dyeing and fashion retail developed alongside, and the metal-bashing industries arrived. Bradford sucked in skills and labour: German-Jewish wool merchants and dye-makers, Irish flax and linen workers from County Mayo, and Yorkshire folk drifting away from an agricultural way of life. The population grew ten-fold, with great mill complexes and neo-Gothic public buildings springing up, and appalling squalour and pollution in its teeming streets. A few enlightened industrialists tried to better the conditions of their workforce, such as Titus Salt, but even he eventually despaired of Bradford and created a new model town at nearby Saltaire , now a UNESCO cultural site.

In the 20th century there was further immigration from East Europe around the war years, but the largest group of incomers were recruited from Pakistan: the traditional weavers of Mirpur had skills that Bradford sought. They arrived in the 1950s and 1960s just in time to watch the textile trade go into long-term decline, unable to compete with cheap imports. The city became tatty, with disused factories crumbling into brownfield sites, and a blighted centre. It began to turn a corner from 1983, with what's now called the National Science and Media Museum creating a tourist destination; film tourism expanded, and there was other urban regeneration. There's still a lot to do.

53.866 -1.661 1 Leeds Bradford Airport LBA  IATA is ten miles north-east of city centre along A658. There's a good choice of flights from Western Europe, e.g. Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, Düsseldorf and Dublin, and within UK from Southampton, Exeter, Belfast and Glasgow. See Leeds#Get in for more info.

LBA doesn't have a motorway or rail link so the journey through traffic can be slow and anxious. Buses 737 and 747 between them run every 30 mins from Bradford Interchange Station to LBA, taking 50 mins; the 737 runs via Shipley, the 747 runs via Greengates and continues to Harrogate. Other buses run from the airport to Leeds, Otley, Ilkley and Keighley. Taxis are plentiful.

53.353889 -2.275 2 Manchester Airport MAN  IATA is a better option for long haul flights. From there take any train towards Leeds, and change at Huddersfield for Bradford Interchange, journey time 1 hr 40 min.

The M62 motorway crosses the Pennines and at junction 26 the M606 is a spur into Bradford city. Bradford bus station is within the Interchange, see above.

First Bus X6 runs to Leeds every 10 minutes M-Sa, every 30 min Sunday, taking 35 min. Bus 72 runs a similar route but with more stops, taking 50 mins. Bus X11 also runs to Leeds every 30 min, and Bus X63 runs to Huddersfield every 10 min. Metro has all the details of these buses.

National Express has 9 direct buses daily from London Victoria , taking six hours. They also run to Bradford from Manchester city and airport, Liverpool, Birmingham, Oxford, Cardiff, Hull and Newcastle upon Tyne.

Megabus has one direct bus from London Victoria and two with a change at East Midlands Parkway.

Map

By bus: see West Yorkshire Metro for timetables and route maps. Your likeliest bus trip is to Leeds, see above.

By taxi: there are many taxi ranks in city centre, but it's often cheaper to call and book. Metro Taxis are considered reliable, call +44 1274 733733 or +44 1274 728999. No call out charge.

Driving in Bradford is a tedious business, because of the many terraces opening onto the narrow thoroughfares. You're always stuck behind a van that is waiting to turn right against the oncoming traffic: no sooner does it succeed but a taxi flies out from the left to take its place, then the traffic lights ahead turn red.

Bradford-on-Avon tourist information and travel guide

The Town Bridge (shown in the image above) crosses the 'broad ford' on the Avon which is the origin of the name Bradford on Avon. There may have been a wooden or tree bridge over the ford in Saxon times but the Normans built the first stone bridge.

It was narrow and dangerous and built without parapets so that people kept falling into the river. The width of the bridge was doubled by the construction of another alongside it. Two ribbed and pointed arches of the original Norman construction can still be seen on the eastern side and if you look under the bridge you can clearly see the join!

On the bridge is a small building which was originally a chapel, the fish on the weather vane is a Gudgeon, an early Christian symbol. However, the chapel was later used as a small prison or "Blind House" where local Bradford-on-Avon drunks and troublemakers were left overnight to cool off !

The Saxon Church of St Lawrence

This charming church, in the centre of Bradford on Avon, dates from approximately AD700. After many different uses and some alteration, it was rediscovered in 1856. The church was purchased from private owners in 1871 and its renovations corrected. It differs from the other Saxon churches in the UK in that the whole building appears to have been erected at one time, with no additions later.

One of the narrow shopping streets

Varied and delightful shops and restaurants line Bradford on Avon's narrow streets made all the more glorious with multi-coloured hanging flower baskets.

The town's position position on the River Avon gives it a magical appeal.

Bradford-on Avon developed as a centre for textiles, mostly wool, and the Bradford-on-Avon you see today was shaped in these times. Many of the large mill buildings along the river are former woollen mills, and most of the houses up on the hill (Tory, Middle Rank) are former spinners and weavers cottages. The wool trade died away in the area, moving North to large industrial centres Like Bradford Yorkshire which some say was named after Bradford-on-Avon ! The large mills were taken over by the new and burgeoning rubber industry, and the rubber plant was the main employer in the town for decades, manufacturing tyres and wiper blades. Sadly that industry has moved on too, and many of the mills are being converted to residences.

The area around Bradford-on-Avon is riddled with mines, used for quarrying the local stone which is similar to the stone which shaped the city of Bath. In the sixties two of the mines in Bradford were taken over by a mushroom growing firm, the even and humid atmosphere of the old mines being perfect for such purposes. The mine at Westwood just outside the town was used for industry, including the Royal Enfield motorcycle plant. During the 2nd world war the mine was used to store part of the crown jewels which had been removed from London for safety!

Culver Close near the centre of Bradford-on-Avon was used for breeding rabbits mainly for food, and Conigre Hill was where pigeons were bred mainly also for food. The Shambles is a crooked little lane running between Silver Street & Market Street. The name derives from the Anglo-Saxon word "scamel", meaning a bench on which goods were laid out for sale, and is still used by shops in much the same way, fresh fruit and veg are displayed each day on wooden benches.

The St Thomas More Roman Catholic Church in the heart of Bradford-on-Avon was designed in 1854 by the architect Thomas Fuller, who also designed the Canadian Houses of Parliament in Ottawa. Thomas Fuller adopted an eclectic approach, and incorporated French, German and Italian Gothic elements, resulting in this splendid Bath stone building with its domestic Tudor style, Jacobean gables, massive oriel window and onion dome atop an octagonal tower.

Latest Information for U.S. Citizens

Information for U.S. Citizens in Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza

The Department reminds U.S. citizens of the continued need for caution and increased personal security awareness as security incidents often take place without warning. The security environment remains complex and can change quickly depending on the political situation and recent events. Please see the latest Israel Security Alert .

U.S. citizens should heed the  Travel Advisory  for Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza. The U.S. Embassy continues to closely monitor the dynamic security situation in Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza. There are active military operations and active rocket and mortar fire in Gaza and the Gaza periphery.  Terrorist groups, lone-actor terrorists and other violent extremists continue plotting possible attacks in Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza. Terrorists and violent extremists may attack with little or no warning, targeting tourist locations, transportation hubs, markets/shopping malls, and local government facilities. Violence can occur in Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza without warning. If you require emergency assistance while in Israel, the West Bank or Gaza, contact the  U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem  by email ( [email protected] for those in Jerusalem, the West Bank, and Gaza or [email protected] for those in Israel outside of Jerusaleml).

Individuals seeking to depart Gaza: As of May 7, the Israel Defense Forces control the Gaza side of the Rafah Crossing. Since that day, the Rafah Crossing between Egypt and Gaza has remained closed. As soon as the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem receives information regarding new exit procedures from Gaza to Egypt, including when crossings resume, we will communicate this to the public immediately.

This remains a complex situation with serious implications for the safety and security of U.S. citizens. U.S. citizens in Gaza in need of assistance should contact [email protected] . U.S. citizens in Gaza are reminded that the U.S. government is unable to provide routine or emergency consular services to U.S. citizens in Gaza as U.S. government employees are prohibited from traveling there.

The U.S. government does not control who is permitted to depart Gaza or enter Egypt. Individuals must assess their own safety and risks in attempting to cross the border. Individuals permitted to enter Egypt will likely receive a 72-hour Egyptian visa; all those who cross should have a plan for onward travel from Egypt in this timeframe. U.S. citizens, LPRs and their immediate family members who successfully enter Egypt and require further consular assistance should contact the  U.S. Embassy in Cairo  via the  U.S. Citizens Services Navigator .  Individuals may apply for a U.S. visa at any U.S. Embassy or Consulate; U.S. immigration laws and regulations will apply.

We continue to work in partnership with Egypt and Israel towards safe passage for U.S. citizens, LPRs, and their immediate family members.

Immediate family members of U.S. citizens include:

  • unmarried children under the age of 21, and
  • parents of U.S. citizens.

If the U.S. citizen is under 21, immediate family will also include any siblings who are also unmarried and under 21.

Immediate family members of LPRs include:

  • unmarried children under 21 years of age.

How to get a certified copy of a death certificate

Many organizations require a certified copy of the death certificate when someone dies. How you get copies depends on whether the person died in the U.S. or abroad.

Death in the U.S.: how to get a certified copy of a death certificate

Contact the vital records office of the state where the death occurred to learn:

  • How to order a certified copy of a death certificate online, by mail, or in-person
  • How to get a copy fast
  • The cost for each certified copy

Can anyone get a copy of a death certificate?

Only certain family members may be able to obtain a death certificate when someone dies. This includes a spouse, siblings, and children. But death certificates can be requested by anyone when they become public record. In some states, death certificates are released 25 or more years after death. Check with your state’s vital records office to find out when death certificates become public record.

When to use a certified copy or a photocopy

You will need to purchase a certified copy of the death certificate for tasks such as:

  • Notifying the Social Security Administration and other government agencies
  • Closing or transferring credit cards and bank accounts
  • Claiming a person's life insurance or pension

You may only need a photocopy for other tasks, such as canceling a subscription. Check with the agency or organization handling each account.

Death of a U.S. citizen abroad: how to get death records

When a U.S. citizen dies in another country, the U.S. embassy or consulate should get a death certificate or notification from the foreign government. It will then issue a  Consular Report of Death Abroad (CRDA) . Use the CRDA in the U.S. as proof of death for closing accounts and handling legal tasks.

You can get up to 20 free certified copies at the time of death.  Order more copies of the CRDA from the Department of State.
