Cult for a reason

I would highly recommend this fragrance if you like clean scents and sandalwood. The scent lasts all day and a little goes a long way! I think this fragrance paired with the body wash and body lotion would allow the scent to last longer throughout the day.

A blog about perfume, byredo gypsy water ~ fragrance review.

Byredo Gypsy Water has been around since 2008, but it wasn’t until a few weeks ago that I finally tried it. A friend gave me a Gypsy Water travel spray, and it’s been living on my dresser.

Gypsy Water is clearly popular. Byredo offers a whole bathroom counter’s worth of body products to go with it. I understand why, and I often find myself reaching for a quick spritz. But the reasons I reach for it are exactly why I won’t be buying a bottle, especially at its price.

Gypsy Water’s notes include bergamot, juniper berries, lemon, pepper, incense, orris, pine needle, amber, sandalwood, and vanilla. In short, Gypsy Water is a sort of Revlon Jean Naté for the incense-loving set. It’s easy to like, sweet and refreshing, and it wears off before you’ve finished your morning coffee.

Gypsy Water kicks off with a prick of bergamot and sweet lemon over piney incense. Here, the romance of the “gypsy” part of the name prevails — I imagine cool nights and warm afternoons camping in the woods with dry pine needles under my feet and one of those darling gypsy trailers with worn velvet cushions, a mismatched tea set, and tassels hanging from the bedding. It reminds me of a lighter, sweeter version of Etro Shaal Nur .

Within a few minutes, amber and sandalwood join the incense and soon swamp the rest of the composition. An hour later, the “water” part of Gypsy Water’s name becomes evident as the fragrance pulls up stakes and takes the caravan down the road. Until Gypsy Water vanishes, it has pleasant sillage and is gosh-darned likeable.

If this girl weren’t on a budget, a jug of Gypsy Water would be wonderful to keep in the refrigerator for regular pick-me-ups. But at $150 for 50 ml of uncomplicated Eau de Parfum that performs like cologne, forget it. I’m more likely to reach for Piver Rêve d’Or for a friendly, inexpensive incense kick (and a longer life on skin) or, as I mentioned, Jean Naté.

Byredo Gypsy Water was developed by perfumer Jérôme Epinette . The Eau de Parfum is $230 for 100 ml, $150 for 50 ml, and $110 for three 12 ml travel sprays. A 250 ml Eau de Cologne is available for $240, as is 7.5 ml of perfumed oil for $78. (If any of you have tried the cologne or perfumed oil, please comment on how it compares to the Eau de Parfum.) Most Byredo fragrances have no lasting power in my opinion and they are very expensive for what you get.

I admit that none of them have bowled me over yet, either, although some of them are nice. But I do like the packaging!

Most of them are quite meh, but these 3 I like and last well on me: M/M Ink, 1996, Seven Veils.

Really? On me it was just a vanilla cupcake, certainly not the devastingly seductive vanilla I was hoping for based on the name.

I wrote a review of it years ago. It might pay me to go back and look at it and see what I really thought. But the name is great.

I was curious about 1996 but I think you decried it as dead now ???? in another post due to reformulation which saves me time and money I can spend on other fragrances…yay!

I’ll have to find out more about 1996–obviously I missed the boat on this one. But you’re so right about money to spend elsewhere, if 1996 doesn’t stand up these days!

Now I’m not so sure. The first time I sprayed the new bottle, I could hardly smell it compared to my previous bottle. But when I tried it again, I could smell it better. So it may have been a nose glitch. The other one you may want to try is The Peradam by Apoteker Tepe, it has some similarities, as does FM Dries Van Noten.

I have a sample of 1996 that I got from a Neiman Marcus rep a little over a month ago, and I think it smells great. It’s strong and it lasts, frankly, until I’m tired of smelling it. New bottles, of anything, usually need a week or two to settle down before they smell right, at least to me.

I’ve noticed that the first few spritzes from a bottle often are a bit “off,” too.

I have not yet found a Byredo that I would truly like, but seeing the number of new launches they throw at us from Sweden, I’m not sure if I even want to find one (as you said, they’re not cheap).

I think for now I’ll stick to discovering this australian gem Grandiflora is. I absolutely love Queen of the Night.

Interesting – I agree with almost all of your review except the part about it not lasting. I get whiffs of this all day from one spritz. I enjoy the body lotion, too.

I had a sample of this one some time back, and it didn’t really do much of anything for me. It seemed so light to me that I kind of wondered if I was missing something. There are some Byredos that I like, though (of the ones I’ve tried, which is hardly an exhaustive list). I really like 1996, and I remember liking Black Saffron a lot.

This is the second mention of 1996. I’d better try it!

And now you have me craving Jean Nate which I wore in the 1970s…Pulp, I think, is the only Byredo I have tried….liked it but did not see the need for a full bottle.

I’ve sampled Pulp, too, and it scratched an itch, but that itch is more satisfyingly (for me) scratched by Bombay Bling.

I needed a perfume that would fit a friend’s wedding in the woods on an unseasonably hot evening, and a sample of Gypsy Water hit the spot! But it’s not something I would reach for on a daily basis, being pretty boring and traditional and not at all gypsy-like.

I can see that being a good fit! Gypsy Water is refreshing, but not too citrusy and sharp, and not too intrusive.

I like Gypsy water, but on me, it’s very long lasting and skanky. I rarely use it, because I feel it’s not really ok for the office. My favorite Byredo is by far 1996, that one is a masterpiece.

I wish I could smell it on you, because on me it’s neither long lasting nor skanky! Alas, the vagaries of skin….

I tried Gypsy Water in a store, and was horrified to find that I couldn’t smell it 5 minutes after spraying on my wrists. I thought something was broken in my nose! The SA assured me that was a common complaint, so I felt much better.

Mojave Ghost and Oliver Peoples both smell amazing and last forever on me.

Oh yes, forgot to mention Oliver Peoples, I like that one too.

So, I’m not alone!

I’ll add Mohave Ghost and Oliver Peoples to my ever-growing list of fragrances to try….

Oliver Peoples is great, but it’s one of those Byredos that lasts about 2 minutes, at least on my skin.

I have just recently discovered Gypsy Water, and was hoping to see a review of it on NST. On me, this is a refreshing, somewhat bracing scent, perfect for warmer weather. I really like it, but like you Angela, it lasts all of 5 minutes on me! I’m so surprised to read descriptions from assorted sources which refer to it as “cozy” and perfect for cooler weather, since it has opposite effect on me. I like it enough though, to consider getting the lotion to layer with it to possibly help with longevity.

The lotion is a good idea. You might not even need the EdT if you have the lotion!

best byredo scent

doesn't have strong rejection but is a lovely clean scent perfect for everyday use. I working the health care industry and find this scent to be inoffensive and perfectly wearable in public. I just wish it would last slightly longer ask onlyget a couple hours of wear

Instant everyday perfume

I just fell in love with Gypsy Water after trying to find a Byredo scent I liked without much luck. Everyone raves about it so I thought I’d love every scent. This is the only one I love and I wear it everyday and receive compliments frequently. It’s so clean and unusual in the best possible way.

Smells great not so long lasting!

As someone who suffers from migraines I tend to be very picky with my perfumes. I got this as a gift and the smell is absolutely lovely. It’s fresh summery and floral (in my Opinion). Im super happy it doesn’t give me a headache which I feared. The only downside to this fragrance is that it doesn’t really last long throughout the day!

Lovely scent but could last longer

The smell is so lovely which is why I bought it - however it really doesn't last as long as it should for a over £200 perfrume. Even when im just sitting in the office i cant smell it on me after a couple of hours. I can only smell it when i hold my skin right up to my nose. Even colleagues/friends have noticed as my old perfume lasted all day and they commeneted if i stopped wearing it as they can't smell this perfume on me! it does last longer if I use the Gypsy Water body moisturiser but this shouldn't have to be done for SUCH an expensive perfume. Won't be repurchasing but love the scent

If there's one indicator of a good perfume, it's this: someone stopping you on the street to ask what you're wearing. It's a fantasy, right? Wrong, it happened to me whilst wearing a certain popular, and oh-so luxury scent...

Considered to be one of the best perfumes for women and a true fragrance dichotomy, Byredo Gypsy Water is a unique, cool and under-the-radar perfume, smouldering beneath the mainstream waft of fruity-floral celebrity scents. And yet it's namechecked as a must-wear fragrance by almost every Beauty Editor I know, as well as a roll call of A-list stars - like Sienna Miller and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley.

As the name suggests, this nomadic scent is an ode to Romani culture. There’s definitely magic to it. Layered with pine needles, incense and sandalwood, the standout note (and the one that initially piqued my curiosity) is juniper berries. The effect is intriguing, alluring and enticing, so much so, that I recommend it as the one , premium fragrance worth adding to your collection - for the compliments alone...

Why Byredo Gypsy Water is the *one* luxe scent I always recommend

RRP: £140 for 50ml

This is the perfume equivalent of the perfect white tee - it's timeless, understated and impossibly cool. If you prefer your fragrances on the lighter, fresher side, this could be the ideal woody aromatic for you.

Of all the scents in my fragrance wardrobe (as a Beauty Editor, I’m lucky enough to have tried many of the best perfumes on the market), this is the one that racks up the most compliments.

My husband loves it. My children - who have been known to turn their noses up at some of my most prized perfumes - love it. And I have experienced that greatest perfume plaudit of all - being stopped in the street by a stranger to ask what it is I am wearing.

What makes Byredo Gypsy Water so special?

I am the sort of person who is automatically turned off by popularity, be it music, fashion trends or films (The Holiday? I just don’t get the hype!). Byredo Gypsy Water is still fairly niche, which obviously draws me in like a moth to a sweet-smelling flame. Its uncommonness is probably owing in part to its hefty price tag. At £140 for 50ml, this is no impulsive lunch hour purchase. 

After dropping enough hints to fill a copy of 'War and Peace', my husband very kindly bought me a bottle for Christmas 2021. I do tend to save it for special occasions - dinners out, family gatherings, date nights, and such - but that bottle is still going strong. If you’re lucky enough to ever receive a Byredo package, the experience of opening up the crisp white embossed box is almost as tantalising as the fragrance itself. Everything about Byredo feels like cool, understated luxury.

How well does it last on the skin?

Is it one of the best long-lasting perfumes ? Sadly not, at least for me. It is a cruel twist of irony that the most delectable fragrance on the planet does not linger on my skin. Having said that, just because my nose becomes impervious to the scent after a few hours, does not mean that others do not continue to enjoy it. I am assured by those in close proximity to me that it still emanates into the day. 

I have found that layering the Eau de Parfum with the coordinating Byredo Gypsy Water Hair Perfume (available at Liberty) does improve the longevity of the fragrance. Still, nothing will put me off this enigmatic, fresh and woody fragrance. And until the compliments stop rolling in, I’ll keep on spritzing, sparingly, of course!

A traveler's guide to Novosibirsk, the unofficial capital of Siberia

Trans-Siberian heritage

Residents of Novosibirsk love trains and are proud of the fact that their city played a significant role in the history of the grand Trans-Siberian railway, which spans the breadth of Russia. The railway is such a part of Novosibirsk identity that it is even depicted on the city’s emblem, along with the bridge that crosses the Ob river and two Siberian sables standing on their hind legs.  

In the city, there are as many as five monuments to trains, and an open-air locomotive museum is located in the vicinity of the train station Seyatel’. The museum has more than 100 steam locomotives, diesel locomotives and carriages, reflecting the history of rail transportation in Russia from pre-revolutionary times to the present day. Wondering around the stationary trains and comparing your height with the diameter of the gigantic iron wheels of the first steam locomotives is all very well, but why not climb inside the carriages and see how the nobility once traveled across Russia in pre-revolutionary times? These tours will however need to be booked in advance. The museum opens from 11:00 until 17:00 every day except Mondays. 

Novosibirsk spans both sides of the river Ob. In the early twentieth century, the border of two different timezones passed right through the city which led to a strange situation- morning on the east bank started one hour earlier than on the west bank! The two-kilometer covered metro bridge that crosses the river is considered the longest in the world. Due to the fluctuations in temperature across the year (on average +30 °C to -30 °C), during the summer the metro bridge expands, and in the winter it contracts by half a meter. To counter these effects, the bridge’s supports are equipped with special rollers that allow it to move.   

The cultural center of Siberia

The repertoire of the theatre can be viewed on its official website . The theatre season runs from September to July, and comprises mainly classical performances, like the ballet “The Nutcracker” by Tchaikovsky, Borodin’s opera “Prince Igor” and Verdi’s “La Traviata”.  

The large Siberian sea and ligers

Weekends are best spent at the Novosibirsk zoo . The zoo is known for breeding big cats, although surrounded by controversy, hosts a successful crossing of a tiger and lion, which of course would not otherwise breed in wildlife. Ligers, or exotic cubs of an African lion and Bengal tigress, feel quite comfortable in the Siberian climate and even produce offspring. The zoo is open to visitors year-round, seven days a week, and even has its own free mobile app, Zoo Nsk .

Every year at the beginning of January, the festival of snow culture takes place bringing together artists from across Russia and around the world to participate in a snow sculpting competition. The tradition started in 2000 inspired by the snow festival in Sapporo, Novosibirsk’s twin-city.

Siberian Silicon Valley

Despite the fact that Akademgorodok was built half a century ago in the middle of the uninhabited Siberian taiga, architecturally it was ahead of its time. No trees were destroyed for its construction, and houses were built right in the middle of the forest. A man walking through the woods would seemingly stumble upon these structures. At that time, no one had built anything similar in the world and ecovillages only became fashionable much later.

For residents of the Novosibirsk Akademgorodok is a different world. When you step out the bus or car, you are immediately on one of the hiking paths through the forest, between the scientific buildings and clubs. On a walk through Akademgorodok, it is possible to unexpectedly encounter art-like objects handmade by residents of the city which have been erected as monuments and some monuments fixed up by city authorities. For example, the monument to the laboratory mice, which knits a strand of DNA on to some needles, can be found in the square alongside the Institute of Cytology and Genetics. In Akademgorodok there are many cafes and restaurants, in which it is possible to rest after a long walk. Grab a coffee and go to eat at Traveler’s Coffee , or eat lunch at the grille and bar People’s or Clover .

Winters in the Akademgorodok are slightly colder than in the city, so wrap up. Spring and summer are usually wetter, so waterproof boots are recommended. In the summer the Ob sea provides respite from the heat, so do not forget your swimsuit to go for a dip.

Memento Mori

Among the exhibits of the museum is one dedicated to world funeral culture — hearses, memorial jewellery from the hair of the deceased, samples from a specific photo-genre of  "post mortem", a collection of funeral wear from the Victorian era, deathmasks, statues and monuments. There’s also an impressive collection of coffins. One of them, resembling a fish, was manufactured on a special visit to Novosibirsk by a designer coffin-maker from Africa, Eric Adjetey Anang, who specializes in the production of unusual coffins.

Surprisingly, the crematorium itself does not look at all gloomy in appearance and definitely does not look like infernal scenes from movies, or like crematoriums of other cities that gravitate towards gloomy temple aesthetics. The Novosibirsk crematorium is decorated in “cheerful” orange tones and is surrounded by a park with a children’s playground nearby. A visit to the museum then leaves you with mixed feelings. 

Novosibirsk underground

Tourists from all over the world go down into the Moscow metro to take a ride and a few selfies in the most famous underground museum. The Novosibirsk metro is also quite a museum in itself — it has 13 stations, the most beautiful of which is Gagarinskaya, Sibirskaya and Rechnoy Vokzal.

The ultramodern Gagarinskaya station is like a real cosmos underground. Its technologically themed design includes marble walls with metallic elements, dark blue backlighting and portraits of Yuri Gagarin. The Sibirskaya station looks like an underground treasure trove, decorated by Altai masters craftsmen with mosaics of precious Siberian stones. The Rechnoy Vokzal station is framed with ten glowing stained glass windows depicting the largest cities of Siberia, including Novosibirsk itself, Omsk, Barnaul and others. The platform resembles a big ship sailing on the Ob, from which ancient Siberian cities are visible through its windows.  

How to get there

The easiest way to get to Novosibirsk is by plane with Aeroflot or Novosibirsk airline S7 with one-way tickets from Moscow costing from 200-250 USD. If you decide to take from the train from Moscow, you’ll have to travel approximately a third of the Trans-Siberian Railway. That’s 3,300 kilometers over almost a three-day journey. 

Where to stay

There are many great hotels in Novosibirsk. Amongst the best include a four-star Doubletree hotel by Hilton , which is located near Lenin Square (per room from $200). After renovations and repairs, the congress-hotel Novosibirsk has improved (per room from $100) and is located across from the train station. Less expensive but of a similar standard is the four-star River Park hotel near Rechnoy Vokzal metro station, which costs $80 per night.
